Dear Collectors This year has certainly got off to a very energetic start as we put the finishing touches to our range of products and organise selections from the National Philatelic Collection for the world exhibition in May. I can feel the excitement when I speak to those involved as last minute details are locked in by the organising committee. There has certainly been a lot of work involved for this dedicated group of people to ensure the success of the show for all those participating as well as those planning to attend. © Copyright 2013 Australian Postal Corporation. Our own participation and celebration of the centenary of Australia’s first national stamp will begin with the range of exclusive new philatelic products. A substantial onsite presence via the Australia Post stand will have the latest stamp releases, information and postmarking news, and new innovations in Australian philatelic products. An opportunity to access important artwork and selections from the Australia Post National Philatelic Collection will be too good to miss for many collectors and I urge those wanting to attend to secure tickets ahead of time. A list of the tickets available and where they can be purchased, as well as show souvenirs and venue details, can be found on the Australia 2013 website. In this edition we bring you the products released in January for the Australian Legends of 2013. The theme was a popular choice and the icons of Australian contemporary music were
delighted to be recognised in this way. The first new release in this edition is a pre-stamped envelope to celebrate the sesquicentennial of the arrival of the first South Sea Islanders to Queensland in 1863. Their numbers grew substantially throughout the following decades and they form a distinctive part of Australia’s multicultural character. We also celebrate the centenary of the naming of Canberra as our nation’s capital. Home to some of our most important buildings, including the National Gallery of Australia, the design of Canberra was deliberate and purposeful, influenced in part by the garden city movement. Important works of art from the Australian National Gallery form the basis of the second in our gallery series of stamps, also to be released in March. The 60th anniversary of the coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is celebrated in Australia this year with the release of two stamps including a 60c base-rate (double-definitive) stamp. And our second Australian Botanic Gardens stamp issue, also to be released in April, features more of Australia’s wonderful Botanic gardens.
Happy Collecting

Hard rock band AC/DC was formed in 1973 by brothers Malcolm and Angus Young. Commonly classified as hard rock, and considered pioneers of heavy metal, they are one of the highest grossing bands of all time. AC/DC underwent several line-up changes before releasing their first album in 1975. After the death of lead singer, Bon Scott, in 1980 the group considered disbanding, but they were urged to continue. Hard rock pub band Cold Chisel was formed in 1973 and by 1975 the definitive line up was consolidated: Jimmy Barnes, Ian Moss, Steve Prestwich, Phil Small and Don Walker. Cold Chisel was renowned as a dynamic live act and from early on concerts routinely became sell-out events. A number of the songs from the East album became embedded into our national identity. Reggae-influenced rock band Men at Work achieved international success in the 1980s. They are the only Australian artists to reach the Number One position in album and singles charts in both the United States and the United Kingdom with Business as Usual and “Down Under” respectively. The group (Colin Hay, Ron Strykert, Jerry Speiser, John Rees and Greg Ham) won the 1983 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. The Seekers are a folk music-influenced music group which was originally formed in 1962. The group’s best-known configuration is Judith Durham, Athol Guy, Keith Potger and Bruce Woodley. After achieving numerous top 10 hits and international acclaim, they were named as joint Australians of the Year in 1968. The group disbanded the same year with Durham wishing to pursue a solo career although they would reform periodically. Woodley’s and Dobe Newton’s song “I Am Australian”, recorded by the Seekers, has become an unofficial Australian anthem.

Ideal gifts for young collectors The story of Pinocchio was written by author Carlo Collodi in the early 1880s and has been a favourite with children ever since. A cheeky character from the start, Pinocchio tried to deceive a cast of colourful characters but his nose would grow a little longer each time he did.

The official foundation of Australia’s national capital took place on 12 March 1913 when Lady Denman, the wife of the then Governor-General, stood upon the newly-laid Foundation Stones and announced that the name would be Canberra. The site had been selected in 1908 as a compromise between rivals Sydney and Melbourne. Following an international competition for the design of the city, plans by architects Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin were selected. Canberra is home to some of Australia’s most important buildings and national institutions. 1764220 Maxicard set of two

These stamps continue the Australian Antarctic Territory (AAT) Landscapes series which began with the iceberg issue in 2011. The mountains and mountain ranges featured reveal the beauty and grandeur of the landscape. Antarctica is the highest continent on earth and Mt McClintock, in the eastern sector of the AAT is its highest mountain. Although elevations in excess of 4,000 metres exist in the western sector of the AAT, these are ice domes and generally not considered mountains, but the deďŹ nition is frequently debated. Mt Parsons near Mawson Base is one of the most regularly ascended peaks due to the repeater installed on its summit. The repeater facilitates communications on VHF band between ďŹ eld parties back to station around the area. Mt Parsons rises more than 1,000 metres above sea level.

This issue of stamps features landscapes from the National Gallery of Australia collection by five of Australia’s best known painters. The paintings convey a range of captivating Australian terrain, from lush coastal regions to the dry interior. Painted during the most prolific period of landscape art in Australia, from the late 1830s to the years following World War II, these works also reflect the changing nature of this nation’s identity. In this era, landscape subjects became firm favourites with the public, and Australians began to visit their own museums and galleries to see images of their country. Landscape art remains a significant and popular genre of visual art. Dandenong Ranges from ‘Beleura’ is an example of Eugene von Guérard’s suburban coastal landscapes, it is believed to have been commissioned by wealthy pastoralist James Butchart of “Beleura”, near Mornington, Victoria. The landscape of the Flinders Ranges in South Australia provided great inspiration for Hans Heysen. German-born Heysen is known for conveying the majesty of large gum trees, evident in his In the Flinders – Far North. In Land of the Golden Fleece Arthur Streeton depicts a view towards Mount William from the southern end of the Grampians mountain range in Victoria, looking down and across a property at Willaura.

Mr Robinson’s house on the Derwent, Van Diemen’s Land is one of John Glover’s most magical landscapes. The site is beside the Derwent Estuary on the outskirts of Hobart, where Mr Robinson owned the substantial double stoned colonial house and expansive grounds. Russian-born artist Nicholas Chevalier travelled throughout the south-east of the country in search of dramatic mountain ranges and seascapes for his subject matter. In Studley Park at sunrise Chevalier shows the Yarra River flanked by tall trees and open bushland. 1766220 Maxicard set of five

Scientists didn’t know what to make of the platypus when they first saw this strange animal that lives in water and on land, has a duck-like bill, a tail and short squat legs. The platypus is a monotreme – egg-laying mammal – and is protected in Australia. Largely covered with strong pointed spines which protect it from predators, the echidna also has a long snout and sharp claws, both used in its search for food. The echidna shares with the platypus the rare distinction of being a monotreme – they are the only two in the world – and is protected in Australia. A marsupial, the brush-tailed possum is the most common possum in Australia, found all along the east coast of the country. It is very active at night and sleeps most of the day.

ONLY A FEW WEEKS TO GO In the lead up to the largest stamp exhibition to take place in the southern hemisphere this year, the Australia 2013 organising committee is busy with final arrangements and exhibition entries. This major international exhibition offers Australian collectors the opportunity to view rarely seen Australian Commonwealth stamps from Australia Post’s National Philatelic Collection and the Royal Philatelic Collection – the world’s most comprehensive collection of British and Commonwealth philatelic material.
There is little doubt that the Court of Honour will be a popular destination for visitors to Australia 2013. On show will be selections of Australian Commonwealth stamps, including the JRW Purves collection, which was sold to His Majesty King George V for approximately £2,000 in 1930.
Rare stamps, preserved by Australia Post on behalf of the Australian people will be on show as well as “never released” drawings, proofs and colour trials used for the planning and development of Australia’s first national stamp issue – Kangaroo and Map. In this very significant Australian philatelic year, catching a glimpse of these rarities over the six-day show is a must for those with a passion for the hobby and an interest in Australian history.
Other areas of interest will be the extensive range of show souvenirs available through the Australia Post stand and the booths held by the specialist stamp dealers and postal administrations. Subscribers to the Australian Stamp Bulletin should also look for a special souvenir edition to be released in early April announcing the official stamp issues to be released during the exhibition.
Gaining permission from the owner of the Royal Philatelic Collection, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, was the first step in securing selections for the Australia 2013 Court of Honour. This privately held collection includes mostly British and Commonwealth stamps but there are also some major items of interest. One is an album said to have belonged to Tsesarevitch Alexis, the heir apparent and only son of Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna, who were murdered with their family in Russia in 1918. The Royal Philatelic Collection is housed in St James’s Palace with selections being loaned out for major exhibitions around the world.

Cecil Beaton photograph (1953)
The coronation of Queen Elizabeth II took place on 2 June 1953 over 12 months after her accession. Prime Ministers and leading citizens of the Commonwealth countries, representatives of foreign states, hundreds of thousands of Britons and over 200,000 tourists descended upon London for the coronation. The Queen rode from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey in the ornate gold state coach.
1768220 Maxicard set of two
During the coronation ceremony, Elizabeth swore the coronation oath whereby she undertook to rule according to law, to exercise justice with mercy and to maintain the Church of England. She was then anointed, blessed and consecrated and crowned by the archbishop - at which point trumpets sounded, the Abbey bells pealed, and guns at the Tower of London saluted.

Botanic gardens are institutions holding documented collections of living plants for the purposes of scientific research, conservation, display and education. A botanic garden is usually permanent; has an underlying scientific basis for, proper documentation of, and monitors its collections; has adequate labelling of its plants; is open to the public; and undertakes scientific or technical research on plants in its collections.
Issue highlights This is the second in the Australian Botanic Gardens series, the first having been issued in 2007 and features another five major botanic gardens across the country. The stamps in the series celebrate the beauty and range of our botanic gardens.
The Royal Botanic Gardens in Cranbourne covers 363 hectares of untouched heathlands, wetlands, woodlands, Australian flora, landscapes, art and architecture. The Botanical Gardens in Hobart hold historic plant collections, significant trees and convict built walls all dating from the 19th century, and the world’s only Subantarctic Plant House. The Darwin Botanic Gardens has approximately 450 species of palms and all eight species of the Adansonia or Baobab tree. The Blue Mountains Botanic Garden, Mount Tomah is set in the World Heritage-listed Greater Blue Mountains, on the summit of a basalt-capped peak, 1,000m above sea level. Its southern beeches from South America provide a spectacular autumnal colour display.
