Legends 2015 The Victoria Cross ANZAC Australia – New Zealand joint issue Centenary of WWI: Gallipoli 1915 Tourist Transport Australian Trees Visiting Birds Cocos (Keeling) Islands Queen's Birthday 2015
Dear Collectors Welcome to a very special edition of the Stamp Bulletin, in which we commemorate military anniversaries and occasions that have helped define the nation. Through the dark days of WWI a legend was born, one that would gain strength and significance for a modern Australia.
Australia and New Zealand answered the call to support Great Britain, when it declared war on Germany on 4 August 1914. Thousands believed it was their duty to sign up.

The Anzac legend was born at Gallipoli in 1915, as the newly formed Australian and New Zealand Army Corps faced the enemy on the fiercely defended Turkish peninsula. An enduring bond was forged between the two nations’ soldiers as they faced a formidable foe and overwhelming losses. The attributes the Anzacs displayed would become fundamental to our Defence Force: endurance, courage, ingenuity, good humour and mateship.
Recognition and respect for the actions of the Anzacs, and a need to honour their memory developed over time. The servicemen and servicewomen who followed in their footsteps were entrusted with an important legacy. Each year, the Anzac spirit and legend are embraced by Australian and New Zealand communities, thousands taking to the streets to watch veterans, descendants and present members of the Defence Force march on Anzac Day. It is with a sense of pride and privilege that the servicemen and servicewomen today continue to embrace the Anzac spirit.

The casualties in the boats and on the beach were moderate. It was chiefly the endeavour to reach the “Third” ridge, and the Homeric struggle that followed to hold the position achieved, that gave Australia “ANZAC Day”. – Graham "Gertie" Butler
This joint stamp issue with New Zealand commemorates the formation and service of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC). Australian and New Zealand troops were organised into a single force during training in Egypt, before being landed on the Gallipoli peninsula on 25 April 1915. Part of a broader allied effort, they landed north of British and French troops at
what became known as Anzac Cove; the men consequently became known as Anzacs. After Gallipoli, ANZAC was disbanded. The men, along with three additional Australian divisions, were reorganised into I Anzac Corps and II Anzac Corps, and sent to France where they fought on the Western Front. An Anzac Mounted Division was also formed in 1916, serving in Sinai and Palestine.

Stamp Bulletin
ANZAC Australia – New Zealand
From shearing shed and cattle run, From Broome to Hobson's Bay, Each native-born Australian son Stands straighter up today. The man who used to "hump his drum", On far-out Queensland runs Is fighting side by side with some Tasmanian farmer's sons. The fisher-boys dropped sail and oar To grimly stand the test, Along that storm-swept Turkish shore, With miners from the west. The old state jealousies of yore Are dead as Pharaoh's sow, We're not State children any more – We're all Australians now! Our six-starred flag that used to fly Half-shyly to the breeze, Unknown where older nations ply Their trade on foreign seas, Flies out to meet the morning blue With Vict'ry at the prow; For that's the flag the Sydney flew, The wide seas know it now!
1852122
Sheetlet of 5 x $1.85 (s/a) $9.25
The mettle that a race can show Is proved with shot and steel, And now we know what nations know And feel what nations feel. The honoured graves beneath the crest Of Gaba Tepe hill May hold our bravest and our best, But we have brave men still. With all our petty quarrels done, Dissensions overthrown, We have, through what you boys have done, A history of our own. Our old world diff'rences are dead, Like weeds beneath the plough, For English, Scotch, and Irish-bred, They're all Australians now! So now we'll toast the Third Brigade That led Australia's van, For never shall their glory fade In minds Australian. Fight on, fight on, unflinchingly, Till right and justice reign. Fight on, fight on, till Victory Shall send you home again. And with Australia's flag shall fly A spray of wattle-bough To symbolise our unity – We're all Australians now. – AB "Banjo" Paterson

March–April 2015
The Gallipoli campaign of 1915 was devised to secure the Gallipoli peninsula, control the Dardanelles and then take Constantinople. When the naval operation failed to force the Narrows, ground forces were sent in. In the early hours of 25 April 1915, the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) landed to the north of British and French troops on Gallipoli peninsula, at what became known as Anzac Cove. They came ashore on a narrow beach below steep, ridged slopes on which the enemy waited. The strength of Turkish forces had been seriously underestimated, and so the allied force’s strategy quickly shifted from taking territory to consolidating any ground gained. On 19 May, Turkish forces orchestrated a counter-attack to push the Anzacs back to the sea. Lance Corporal Albert Jacka helped repel an assault at Courtney’s Post, for which he received Australia’s first Victoria Cross of the war. Later, in August, an allied offensive was ordered, during which the Australian 1st Brigade made a diversionary attack at Lone Pine. While the allied offensive was a failure, the men at Lone Pine secured a distance of Turkish trenches, so had some success to speak of.
Fatalities at Gallipoli were great on both sides, not only through combat but also through disease. Hospital ships were anchored offshore and makeshift ambulance marquees established at Anzac Cove; the wounded were also evacuated to hospitals on Lemnos (Greece) and Malta, and at Alexandria, in Egypt. In the early days of the campaign, stretcher-bearer Private John Simpson Kirkpatrick became legendary for tirelessly transporting wounded men from the head of Monash Valley to the dressing station at the beach, on the back of a little donkey, often working under fire. He was killed three weeks into his service at Gallipoli. Following the August offensive, success at Gallipoli was deemed unachievable and withdrawal was recommended. In a carefully choreographed event, allied troops were withdrawn – the Anzacs on two nights over 18–20 December. Australia suffered 26,111 casualties during the campaign, with 8,141 men dying.
On 25 April 2015 Australians and New Zealanders will stand together at Gallipoli to commemorate the centenary of the ANZAC landings.

Visitors flocking to some of Australia’s most beautiful destinations can board a range of transport vehicles for sightseeing tours. The lovely coastal city of Victor Harbor on South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula hosts the Horse-Drawn Tram, a service first established in 1894. Queensland’s spectacular Whitsunday Islands and the Great Barrier Reef can be viewed from the air in popular seaplane tours.
For many years, the early 20th-century steam train Puffing Billy, which runs on its original track in the Dandenong Ranges, has been one of Victoria’s favourite attractions. Canoe and flat-bottomed boats carry tourists along the dramatic Katherine Gorge, a deep gorge carved through ancient sandstone by the Katherine River and the central attraction of Nitmiluk National Park in the Northern Territory.

The four trees featured on these stamps represent the thousands of tree species endemic to Australia
Four remarkable Australian trees are featured on these stamps. The Queensland Bottle Tree (Brachychiton rupestris), named for its distinctive swollen trunk, grows in Queensland’s Burnett region. At 23 metres tall and 9.5 metres in circumference, it is a particularly large example of its species, which is endemic to central Queensland and northern New South Wales. The beautiful, graceful Lemon-scented Gum (Corymbia citriodora), from near Tocumwal, New South Wales, is around 130 years old. The species is endemic to the temperate and tropical north of eastern Australia.
The gnarled Moonah (Melaleuca lanceolata), one of 140 species of melaleuca found in southern Australia, has been growing in sandy soil on Victoria’s Churchill Island for over 350 years. The enormous Green Fig or Strangler Fig (Ficus virens) on Queensland’s Atherton Tableland is around 500 years old and has a canopy that extends over an extraordinary 2,000 square metres. This epiphytic fig started life as a seed deposited high in a host tree, and after germination sent out long cable-like roots to the ground, eventually killing the host tree by depriving it of nutrients and light.

The Cocos (Keeling) Islands comprise a group of 27 islands in two atolls. North Keeling Island is a single-island atoll, 24 kilometres north of the main atoll. Declared the Pulu Keeling National Park in 1995, its remoteness makes it a safe environment for many resident-breeding, migratory and vagrant birds – infrequent, perhaps accidental, visitors. pristine islands in the vast Indian Ocean, and its wetland is an important habitat. Of the approximately 60 bird species observed at Cocos (Keeling) Islands, 24 have been recorded on North Keeling over the last 30 years. This issue depicts two species of vagrant seabird, the Herald Petral and Indian Yellow-nosed Albatross, and two wader species, the Oriental Pratincole and Little Curlew.
