Welcome to another edition of the Stamp Bulletin Australia and the latest news about forthcoming stamp issues. Also included in this edition is information about Australia Post’s stamp issue program for the 2012 Olympic Games in London and an opportunity to pre-order your Australian Gold Medallists Collection. We anticipate a lot of interest from overseas collectors for this fourth release of sheetlets, especially as more Olympic host countries use the instant-stamp process to commemorate gold medal wins. This Stamp Bulletin also brings you an exciting new addition to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee product range – a prestige postal and numismatic cover featuring a first release of a £5 coin with the Queen’s portrait on both sides. The coin was minted in the United Kingdom and full details of the product can be found on page 18. From Christmas Island to the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, we appreciate the beauty of nature through a variety of ferns and breathtaking skies. Never the same, the skies over the Cocos (Keeling) Islands offer a range of colour and often spectacular cloud formations at sunrise and sunset.

There is a distinct group of sea molluscs found on the shorelines of each continent but very little is known about them by everyday visitors to the beach. Nudibranchs display an array of bright colours to ward off would-be predators and to draw attention to their toxicity. They can also be found at great ocean depths and are the subject of our Underwater World stamp issue, to be released in May. It might be worth putting these little molluscs on your list of things to watch out for. Don’t forget to visit the website at www.australia2013.com to keep up to date with the latest news, events and souvenirs as we count down to Australia’s next international stamp exhibition in Melbourne – Australia 2013. You’ll find a great read by Australia Post resident philatelic historian, Richard Breckon, on the Kangaroo and Map stamp series, including images of these icons of Australian philately.

Happy collecting

Michael Zsolt Manager, Philatelic

Christmas Island is the summit of a volcanic seamount, and it features numerous species of fern.

Issue highlights Attractive se-tenant pairs are a feature of this issue. The layout of the stamps on the first day cover presents each fern facing toward the central postmark.

Tectaria devexa var. minor is a small fern with pale green fronds up to 30cm long and lives on rocks (lithophytic) and cliff faces. Asplenium listeri, or Christmas Island Spleenwort, is an endangered endemic species with only a few small populations found mostly on the eastern side of the island. Bolbitis heteroclita is a ground cover fern that forms low blankets under the densely shaded rainforest. Pteris tripartita, also called the Giant Brake Fern, is an evergreen, rhizomatous fern and grows under dappled light and in moist soil conditions.

The remote Cocos (Keeling) Islands are located 2,770 kilometres north-west of Perth in the Indian Ocean and comprise two tropical coral atolls. The southern atoll consists of 26 islands and the uninhabited northern atoll, North Keeling Island, lies 24 kilometres away. Of approximately 570 people living on the southern atoll, 86 per cent are Cocos Malays, descended from Javanese labourers originally brought to the islands in the 19th century to farm coconuts. The remaining population is European, mainly employed by the Australian government. The romance and the beauty of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands are captured in its dramatic sunrises and sunsets, although ironically, colour in our sky is inuenced primarily by impurities like dust or smoke in the air. The photographs used in the stamp designs were taken by Cocos (Keeling) Islands local photographers Karen Willshaw and Ismail Macrae.

Flabellina rubrolineata

Nudibranchs are marine molluscs renowned for their flamboyant colour patterns. They have evolved to the point where they no longer need the passive defence of a shell, instead opting for special chemical secreting glands or recycled stinging cells to keep their soft bodies intact.

1725184 Prestige booklet

Issue highlights The prestige booklet of this stamp issue features unique blocks of four and further information about these fascinating Australian sea creatures. The minisheet also features an embellishment.

Nudibranchs have bright, colourful bodies that not only advertise their toxicity and distastefulness to would-be predators, but also provide near perfect camouflage to hide their delicate bodies. They also have an amazing array of body parts, including a rasp-like “tongue”, called a radula used to scrape their food, finger-like cerata protruding from the back and sides, which are extensions of the gut and some even have extended mantles for swimming. They have a set of exposed frilly gills and, most strange indeed, two “nose-stalks” termed rhinophores. The rhinophores are perched on top of the animal’s head allowing it to smell the water for food and possible mates. Nudibranchs can be found in all habitats from the deepest ocean to the shorelines of every continent. They come in many sizes, are beautiful to behold and have developed survival strategies, which defy the imagination.

Australian athletes have competed in all Olympic Games of the modern era. Our first Olympian was Edwin Flack, who won two gold medals and one bronze at the first modern Olympiad in Athens in 1896. Australia is one of the world’s top sporting nations: in the last three Olympic Games Australia’s aggregate medal tally has ranked us among the top six. Historically most medals won by Australian athletes have been in the sports of Swimming, Athletics, Cycling and Rowing.

Issue highlights The first stamp release in the planned Olympic stamp program coincides with the selection of the Australian Olympic Team and features icons of the host city in the design.

The Games of the XXX Olympiad will be held in London, England, from 27 July to 12 August 2012. The competition schedule for the London Olympic Games includes 26 different summer sports with a total of 38 disciplines (a branch of an Olympic sport comprising one or more events). Approximately 10,500 athletes are expected to participate in the Games, including an Australian team of about 400. The motto for the London Olympic Games is Live as one.

The Australian Olympic Team is represented in the stamp design by the Olympic rings and Australian flag. Also featured are several famous icons of the host city. The distinctive dome of St Paul’s Cathedral was designed by Sir Christopher Wren in the late 17th century. When the giant Ferris wheel, known at the London Eye, was erected to mark the millennium in 1999, it was the highest structure of its type in the world. Big Ben is the name usually given to the clock tower at the north end of the Palace of Westminster, although it strictly refers to the heaviest of five bells within the clock, which strikes on the quarter hour and the hour. The ubiquitous double-decker red buses first appeared in London after World War II.

The Farming Australia series continues with four additional stamps. The first European settlers arrived in 1788 with six head of cattle. Today with over 23 million animals, Beef cattle are one of our major industries, farmed across much of Australia. Until the 1950s Australia’s beef herd was dominated by Bos taurus cattle of British origin, such as Hereford, Aberdeen Angus and Beef Shorthorn. In the late 1960s, large European Bos taurus breeds such as Limousin, Charolais and Simmental were introduced and crossed with British breed stock to produce larger animals. The cattle represented on the stamp are Droughtmaster, a Brahman cattle cross developed in Australia for dry, harsh conditions, particularly in the north of the country. Most of the citrus fruit produced every year in Australia is oranges. Mandarins, lemons, limes and grapefruit account for the remaining citrus production (around 27 per cent). The main orange varieties are Navels and Valencias. Citrus production regions are in the Riverland, South Australia; the Murray Valley in Victoria and New South Wales; the Riverina in New South Wales and the Central Burnett region in Queensland. There are also additional plantings throughout Western Australia, inland and coastal New South Wales, regions in Queensland, as well as smaller plantings in the Northern Territory.

1733220 Maxicard set of four Australia is the third largest raw sugar producer in the world. Eighty per cent of the country’s sugar is exported, making the industry the seventh largest agricultural exporter in Australia. Australia’s sugarcane is grown in high-rainfall and irrigated areas along coastal plains and river valleys on 2,100 km of Australia’s eastern coast, between Mossman in far north Queensland and Grafton in New South Wales. Queensland accounts for about 95 per cent of Australia’s raw sugar production, and New South Wales around 5 per cent.

Australia is the world’s leading producer of wool, accounting for around 24 per cent of global wool production. Australia is also the world’s leading wool exporter. The Australian sheep flock is overwhelmingly Merino, which produces finer wool than other breeds. Consequently, the vast majority of Australian wool is suited to the manufacture of high-quality fashion apparel. Wool is produced in Australia under a range of environmental conditions, from the highlands of northern and southern New South Wales and Tasmania, to the pastoral zones of Western Australia, South Australia and Queensland.

Hobart

Issue highlights As in the preceding two stamp issues in this series, a special intaglio minisheet will be released.

This stamp issue is the third in the Colonial Heritage series, commemorating Australia’s philatelic past. Book-ending the stamps of the colonial period, it features a reworking of Australia’s first postage stamp design, “Sydney View” (1850), and one of its last in the colonial period, “Hobart”, from the Tasmanian pictorial issue (1899–1900). Created some 50 years apart, the scenes featured in the original designs serve very different purposes, each linked to its specific historical moment.

1730013 First day cover (minisheet)

The original Sydney View is based on the Great Seal of NSW, which in turn was inspired by Josiah Wedgewood’s Sydney Cove medallion (1789), commemorating the landing of the First Fleet in 1788. It features the allegorical figure of Industry, sitting on a bale of goods and surrounded by her attributes, receiving three convicts and gesturing to a scene of industry across the harbour. The scene is instructive and redemptive,

symbolising the convicts’ path to redemption and the colony’s advancement towards an idealised state. In contrast, Tasmania’s pictorial issue expresses a confident young colony’s apprehension of its landscape and its reflection of this for broad consumption. The pictorial issue arose from government photographer John Watt Beattie’s suggestion to develop a stamp issue to promote the colony’s scenic attractions. By the mid to late 19th century, early mass tourism was gaining traction, so the pictorial stamps can be seen as paper ambassadors publicising the natural beauty of the colony wherever they went.

Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Prestige PNC

Released 1 June 2012 Limited to 2,500 Features foiling and embossing

The United Kingdom’s Royal Mint has released a £5 coin to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, and Australia Post is issuing a new postal and numismatic cover featuring the coin. The obverse portrait is the first new portrait of the Queen to appear on a UK coin since 2007 and shows the Queen wearing her Order of the Garter robes. The reverse portrait was inspired by Mary Gillick’s portrait of the Queen – the first portrait of the sovereign to appear on UK coins circulating from 1953 until 1968. The design includes foliage and a specific reference to Queen Victoria, the only other British monarch to achieve her Diamond Jubilee (1897). This item is only available from the Philatelic Bureau and is limited to three per customer. This product is not part of standing orders.
