Dear Collectors Welcome to the March–April edition of the Stamp Bulletin. This edition introduces the 2016 Australian Legends Award recipients – our singles tennis greats, who are recognised for their contributions to the sport through their on-court successes. I would like to thank those who responded to my letter outlining changes to Australia Post that may affect collectors. I felt it was important to inform you directly of any likely impact on you as a collector, and of the steps being taken to continue to support your philatelic interest. Michael Zsolt Manager, Philatelic Australia Post

This year we celebrate the 90th birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. We also remember the events of 1916 with our stamp series marking the centenary of World War I. The issue of five stamps marks a shift of key focus for Australian troops to the battlefields of the Western Front. The issue also reflects on Australians’ changing perception of war, with massive casualty figures affecting volunteer numbers and leading to the first of two referenda to introduce conscription. Australian nurses actively supported troops in the field, and Matron Grace Wilson was awarded the Royal Red Cross First Class in 1916 for her exceptional work.

Fair Dinkum Aussie Alphabet takes a light-hearted look at the larrikin culture and sense of humour for which we are known, glimpsed through the quirky illustrations of Gavin Ryan. This first stamp issue in the series presents five letters that just happen to represent five of our states. They also unpick our lingo to point out beloved local places, attractions and products that mark us out as, well, just a little bit Aussie. Don’t forget to sign up to our online newsletter to receive your free minisheet through the Australia Post Collectables website. The offer will remain open until 12am (AEDST) 31 March 2016.

Australian Legends

of Singles Tennis

5

March–April 2016

For several decades during the second half of the 20th century Australian tennis players dominated the international tennis circuit. This year’s Australian Legends are singles champions from that golden age of tennis. The 12th stamp honours the career of current player, Lleyton Hewitt. Pat Cash’s greatest tennis achievement was winning the men’s singles at Wimbledon in 1987. Evonne Goolagong Cawley won four Australian Open singles between 1974 and 1977. Ashley Cooper was only the sixth man to win three or more majors in a season and won back-to-back Australian titles in 1957 and 1958. Roy Emerson was a superfit and athletic champion winning 28 Grand Slam titles (12 singles, 16 doubles) – a record for men’s tennis. Neale Fraser was a Wimbledon champion and dual US singles winner. Unluckily, he missed out on his national title in three finals. John Newcombe was a great competitor capturing seven Grand Slam singles titles. He was named Davis Cup captain in 1994, a role he continued until 2000. Pat Rafter captured back-to back US Open titles in 1997 and 1998 – the only Australian to do so in the Open era. Rafter was a winner of 11 ATP singles titles.

Tony Roche possessed a lethal left-hand serve that helped him win the 1966 French Open title. A keen Davis Cup player and was a part of winning teams in 1965, 1966, 1967 and 1977. Known as “Muscles” to his friends, Ken Rosewall is one of the tennis greats amassing 18 major titles, including eight singles titles and a career doubles Grand Slam. Frank Sedgman took just five years to amass 22 major titles, including five singles titles (Australian Open 1949–50, Wimbledon 1952 and US Open 1951–52). Fred Stolle contested singles finals at all the Grand Slams, winning at Paris in 1965 and New York in 1966. He was part of Australia’s winning Davis Cup teams in 1964, 1965 and 1966. Lleyton Hewitt will retire from playing tennis after Australian Open 2016. His career achievements include winning the 2001 US Open and 2002 Wimbledon men's singles titles. He is the most capped Davis Cup player of all time.

This stamp issue is a companion to the 2003 Australia Post Australian Legends issue, which honoured Rod Laver and Margaret Court.

Test your spelling with this first instalment of the fair dinkum Aussie alphabet! Have you ever seen a winsome wombat watering a waratah in Western Australia? Or Vince the vague Victorian vanquishing violins with his Victa while devouring his vegemite victuals? How about a quizzical quokka queuing for a Quokkair flight to Queensland, or nautical numbat navigating naughty nippers in New South Wales? This stamp issue is part one of a series featuring an old-fashioned Aussie alphabet of humorous scenes devised by

artist Gavin Ryan. It begins with the letters representing five of our states. N is for… New South Wales, nipper, numbat… Q is for… Queensland, Quokka, queue, quoll… S is for… South Australia, shark, sandcastle, surf, starfish, sausage… V is for… Victoria, Victa, vegemite, vegetables, violin… W is for… Western Australia, wombat, wattle, waratah, water hose…

While bridges have been a feature of civilisation for millennia, the development of materials, technologies and engineering knowledge has led to radical shifts in design and construction. In Australia, the first bridge constructed after European settlement was Richmond Bridge, in Tasmania, the stone structure built with convict labour between 1823 and 1825. This stamp issue focuses not on Australia’s early bridges, but on three bridges from the 20th century. The five-lane Tasman Bridge crosses the Derwent River in Hobart, linking the CBD with suburbs in the east. It was completed in 1964 to replace the old Hobart Bridge. Calamity struck the pre stressed concrete-girder

bridge in 1975, when a bulk ore carrier delivering cargo to a company in Risdon collided with the bridge’s pylons. A large section of the bridge collapsed onto the vessel, killing seven crew and five motorists. The bridge was rebuilt by 1977. Gladesville Bridge extends across the Parramatta River west of central Sydney, linking the suburbs of Huntleys Point and Drummoyne. It is one of a complex of three bridges, the other two being Fig Tree and Tarban Creek Bridges. The Story Bridge is one of Brisbane’s most notable landmarks, the striking bridge built in the late 1930s and opened in 1940. It was designed by John Bradfield, who also designed Australia’s most famous bridge, Sydney Harbour Bridge.

The Queen’s Golden Wattle diamond brooch comprises 150 white and yellow diamonds.

The 2016 Queen’s Birthday stamp issue celebrates the 90th birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. In the domestic stamp, Her Majesty is pictured attending a garden party for the Not Forgotten Association (NFA), which is held annually to honour the contribution of the armed forces. The Queen’s significant involvement in the armed forces will be one of the themes highlighted in Her Majesty’s 90th Birthday Party, a series of celebrations taking place in May and June 2016. The celebrations will coincide with the annual Windsor Horse Show, another significant personal interest. As part of the festivities, there will be four evenings of music, song, dance and video projection over 90 minutes. The display will highlight and celebrate the Queen’s life and personal interests as well as key events of her reign, including her coronation in 1953, her diamond jubilee in 2012 and

becoming Britain’s longest reigning monarch in 2015. The Australian Golden Wattle diamond brooch is said to be one of the Queen’s personal favourites and features on the international stamp. The brooch was presented as a gift from the people and government of Australia during the Queen’s inaugural tour of Australia in 1954 – the first ever tour by a reigning British monarch. During the tour, The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh visited the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Tasmania, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia. They arrived on the SS Gothic, which sailed into Sydney Harbour, where the couple were met with a thunderously enthusiastic reception. It is estimated that around 75 per cent of Australia's population caught a glimpse of the newly crowned queen during the tour.

This stamp issue is the third in a series marking the centenary of World War I. It focuses on events of 1916 as they affected Australians on the frontline and at home. In March 1916, the troops joined allied forces on the Western Front, a system of trenches that stretched 750 kilometres from the Belgian coast through France to the Swiss border. British and French troops had been engaged there since late 1914. The first Australian troops were sent to the comparatively quiet Armentières area, in the north, where they were introduced to trench warfare – represented in the stamp “Arrival on the Western Front”. Their first major battles were the costly conflicts at Fromelles, in French Flanders, and, soon after, at Pozières and Mouquet Farm, in the Somme valley. “The Somme offensive” stamp shows Australian machine gunners returning from the frontline near Pozières.

During 1916, Grace Wilson – matron on Lemnos in 1915, in Egypt and Britain in 1916, and in Abbeville, France, in 1917 – was awarded the Royal Red Cross, First Class for “distinguished service in the field”. She was also awarded three “Mentioned in Despatches” that year for her outstanding service, and a fourth time in 1918. She was one of around 3,000 Australian nurses to volunteer. On the home front, news of the massive number of casualties on the frontline led to a decline in voluntary enlistment. Labor Prime Minister Billy Hughes believed more troops was the only way to win the war, and Britain pressured him to commit 5,500 men per month. The vexed question of conscription proved divisive politically, socially and religiously. The first of two referenda was held on 28 October 1916, the second on 20 December 1917. The “no” vote won by a narrow margin in 1916.

Christmas Island WA 6798

Christmas Island is home to the largest terrestrial arthropod on earth, the Robber Crab (Birgus latro), also known as the Coconut Crab. These are found in most parts of the island and usually venture out at night or on overcast days. They forage on vegetable material or carrion on the forest floor. The Robber Crab is also found on other tropical islands in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, but Christmas Island supports the world's largest population. These huge crabs

can weight up to four kilograms and have an impressive leg span of around 800mm. On Christmas Island the crab's body colour varies from light violet to deep purple, purplishblue or orange-red to brown. The island population of Robber Crabs was reduced in the late 1990s by invasions of the yellow crazy ant. An ongoing islandwide ant poisoning program has allowed the robber crab (and other land crab) population to recover to some extent.

DESIGN MANAGER

A global decline in the numbers of Birgus latro is a result of harvesting for food, habitat loss, interaction with humans and the impact of introduced Xxx. predators on young crabs. 1896002 First day cover (gummed) $4.30

The Parachute Rigger is a member of the Royal Australian Army Ordnance Corps – Army. Parachute Riggers are specialist soldiers who perform a wide range of technical maintenance functions on parachutes and aerial delivery equipment. These maintenance functions include inspection, repack, repair, and malfunction analysis to parachutes and aerial delivery equipment. All Riggers are required to be qualified as static line paratroopers. Riggers are critical to all Army parachute operations. Every

parachute packed, repaired and maintained by a Parachute Rigger can directly affect the safety of others in the personnel packing role or indirectly in the cargo packing role. As a means of quality control, Riggers are required to regularly jump parachutes that they have packed themselves. This is echoed in the Rigger motto, “BE SURE ALWAYS”. Since 1966, there have been 696 personnel trained to conduct parachute rigging duties.

Eleven per cent of Parachute Riggers are women. 6826144 PSE (postmarked as shown) $1.20
