February is a fun month! Super Bowl, Valentines Day, and Winter (I love winter). I made the loose theme for this issue about winter, what we do and what we dream about. I love the contributions that I received! And looking at the fashions - well I need to go shopping for some more fun clothes. I hope you enjoy the Photo contest entries. The judges had a tough time choosing - I haven’t had a three way tie for first before! Now it is your turn. The entry photos are on pages 33 to 45. Choose your #1 and #2 choices by March 1 and email directly to editor@thestandmag.com. The #1 choice will be on the cover of Issue 18. One vote per person please. This issue also includes details about the STAND’s 2nd year of sponsoring the Creating Innovation Awards. This contest turns the spotlight on BJD artists that are moving and inspiring the BJD world with their innovations and creativity. You will find details inside. Enter your doll by February 28! Enjoy!

Creative Innovation Awards The Creative Innovation Awards are about recognizing the creativity innovations in the ball jointed world that move the industry forward and includes all aspects of the creative process. Now in its second year, the STAND’s Creative Innovation Award, has expanded to 9 categories and is open to artists worldwide. Photos of all entries will be reviewed by a panel of 5 judges. Each submission will be judged by its overall appeal, design innovations, originality, and quality of workmanship. Entry Specifics
• Each entry must match the category specifics exactly. Any deviation will be grounds for disqualification and will not be submitted for judging. Recasts are never allowed. • Entry deadline: Submit between December 4, 2019 and February 28, 2018 – if space is available, all entries will be published in Issue 18 of the STAND on March 31. Judging will take place in April with winners announced at PNW BJD Expo 2019. • Enter as many dolls/items in as many categories as you want, but an individual doll can only be entered once. If a doll was produced in different colors, only one color can be submitted. • The dolls may be made of resin, porcelain or vinyl. • Dolls/items that you submit must have been produced and for sale between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2018. • $15.00 for the first entry, $5.00 for each additional entry.
Entry Information – per item, per category
• Name of doll • Height • Material used for head and body • Eye color & material • Costume description (detailed) • Additional description • Two pictures, one full length and one close-up • Photographer name
RY T N R E 28! U YO RY T I M BRUA B U S FE BY
Notes: The submission link transfers you to a secure sister website for completion. Incomplete or unpaid forms will be disqualified. By submitting your items, you allow the STAND to use your photos in the magazine and for promotional materials. If there are less that 5 submissions in a category, the STAND reserves the right not to judge that category.
Photograph Requirements
You will need to include 2 photographs; one full length and one close-up in front of a plain background. The photo needs to be full resolution with a quality setting of “high” or better. Because of the large size, you will submit photos directly to editor@thestandmag.com – you will need to make sure your submission number is in the “subject” line.
Most Innovative Artist Award
Innovation is creating an original concept that did not exist in the hobby before and that changed or changes how collectors pose or dress dolls. Our 5 judges are taking this prestigious award very seriously in choosing a list of the industry’s most creative artists for consideration. Their requirement is to nominate artists by answering these questions: name the innovation, how it impacted the industry, and why it’s important.

3rd Annual PHOTO CONTEST Entries Theme: Paris, Then or Now I really enjoyed hosting this year’s photo contest. The quality of the entries were so good that I was not surprised at 3 photographs tieing for first place. So I asked my back-up judge to be the tie breaker. The choice was hard and I want to give kudos to all of our entries. Each photographer was asked to give a description of what their photo depicted, which is shown on each entry on the following pages.
The Eiffel Tower is the greatest Paris sightseeing stop. But at first it was described as the ugliest building in the city. The tower was a subject of controversy, drawing criticism from those who objected on artistic grounds. Weird things can be unaccepted now, but sooner or later they can become famous artworks. Strangeness doesn’t mean tasteless. doll: PULLIP AKEMI BY GROOVE Photographer POLINA KOVALSKA Our judges choice 2nd place winner, Stephanie Butts will receive $100.00. A portion of her essay is below:
Quasimodo had a huge head, bristling with red hair and was hideously deformed. He had a giant humpback, a malformed blind left eye and a horny lip over which one tooth protruded. He was also deaf. when comparing himself to the beautiful Esmeralda, ““When I compare myself with you, I cannot help pitying myself, poor unhappy monster that I am! I must look like a beast to you. You, a sunbeam, a drop of dew, a bird’s song! I am something frightful, neither man nor animal, something harder, shapeless, more trampled upon than a pebble.” Swinging down the facade of Notre Dame by rope, Quasimodo rescues Esmerelda from hanging, shouting, “Sanctuary!” doll: BEASTIE BY TRACY PROMBER Photographer STEPHELLAB
Now it is your turn to vote! The Public Choice voting will be open until March 1st. The winner will be announced in Issue 18 of the STAND on March 31, 2019. The winner will receive $200.00 plus a free registration to the 2019 PNW BJD Expo. email editor@thestandmag.com with your vote (one per person please).

Desperate to find a replacement, the theatre managers recruit a young chorus girl, Christine, to sing the lead instead. Marie Antoinette was the last Queen of France before the French Revolution. She was known for her desire for extravagance and excess and was a symbol of fashion and beauty. I’ve captured the lavish lifestyle of Marie Antoinette in this image being waited on, literally hand and foot, being dressed and served by her attendants as she eats her cake. doll: NICOLE, CAROLINE & STELLA BY NIGEL CHIA Photographer DEBORAH HOOD
