Welcome to our Summer issue! Summer traditionally is a time to venture out and embrace the Great Outdoors...a time to play in the sun whether that is in the sand, the sea or your own backyard. With that said, it goes without saying that this summer is like no other. As the height of the season approaches, most of us are still homebound, with cancelled summer vacation plans in hand instead of fond memories of recent adventures. In a sense, our adventures have become dreams of things yet to be. Although this summer may be a different with the pandemic still abound, we wanted to capture that sense of adventure in this issue. In this summer-themed issue of STAND, you’ll find a variety of photos from our contributors highlighting this sense of summer adventures and summer dreams. We thank our contributors for not only stepping up to the challenge but also for their artistic excellence in their stunning submissions. We see it as a chance to “live vicariously” through our dolls...a nice diversion to “sheltering in place”! Here’s to making your own adventures through these gorgeous photographs! Have a great summer and stay safe!

Your BEST SHOT As part of an ongoing article series, STAND presents tips, tricks and best practices to help you “STAND out” in your photography. In this issue, let’s discuss having fun with posing. One of my goals in photography is to create an image that tells a story of the dolls seemingly having a life beyond what you see in the photo. A practice you can try to bring your photograph to “life” is to position or pose in a way that displays a sense of interaction between dolls or a doll and an object. Things to keep in mind to create a sense of interaction are: • Eye positioning • Head and neck positioning • Realistic body posing • Leveraging the arms and hands • Using a prop as an object of focus A few examples of this idea of interaction are shown on the next page. First is a shot of Willow and Tiny Ted by Liz Frost. Notice the eye and head positioning to show that both dolls only have eyes for each other in this tender scene. In the second picture, Nelly by Kaye Wiggs is being tempted by an apple from sly Khitrula from Whispering Grass. Her head is positioned downward along with her torso to give her a more focused gaze. Khitrula’s eyes have been positioned so that he is looking up at her from the side, which emphasizes his seemingly sly behavior. Nelly seems more concerned about him vs. the apple in this shot. Think about the shot if the heads or eyes were positioned towards the camera....it would tell a different story. Last, we have an example of two dolls by Forever Virginia interacting with an object. Briar is holding a Barbie doll as Sweet Pea reaches for it. Note that Briar’s body position shows that she is showing her younger sibling the doll and she is looking right at her as she “talks” to her. Sweet Pea, on the other hand, only has eyes for the Barbie. Note her head and eye position gives her the focused gaze which is emphasized by the outstretched arm reaching for the doll. At the end of the day, your pictures can tell whatever story you want them to. What story are they telling you as you look at them? Try some or all of these tips to bring your story to life! And most of all, have fun!
