March is a funny month. Spring wants to be here, but winter has not quite let go. Just enough nice days to coax the trees to start budding and then ... snow. I love my garden and believe strongly that we need to participate in growing our own food. Even when I had an apartment, I had a patio box filled with salad makings. In every home that we have owned, I have had a large enough garden to alienate neighbors with excess produce. But weather has not always been my friend and the growing season is short here, so I finally got smart and now have a greenhouse. I can finally be a full-on garden lady ... this is going to be a good year! On the magazine front, I am hoping that you will take the time to submit photos for the contest. The loose theme is Gatsby, an era of social unrest, gangsters, jazz, and prohibition. Plenty of subjects to choose from! Submit your entry to editor@thestandmag.com by the March 30 deadline. Winners will receive cash prizes with their pictures included in the next issue and some free ads. Our May issue will include a section on anniversaries. If you have been making dolls or their accoutrements, designing costumes, creating friends, please share your story. Let’s make the anniversary levels in five year increments - 5, 10,15, etc. Send me a good high resolution photo (NO watermarks) and a paragraph on what you do and how you are celebrating your achievements. I am excited to learn more and share what I learn with our readers. Everyday the slate is blank - let’s write on it together,

Dorothy

BJD PIONEER & TRENDSETTER

KAYE WIGGS

Article By: Dorothy Drake

Not only is Kaye Wiggs credited with creating the first non-asian BJD, she continues to thrive in a very competitive marketplace. It was my pleasure to talk to Kaye about her journey and how she is moving into the future.

TSL - How long have you been making dolls? KW - I started out making cloth and needle sculpted dolls. In 1989 I began making porcelain reproduction dolls. In 1990 I sculpted my first doll.

TSL - How did you get started? KW - I have always enjoyed drawing, painting and doing crafty things. In my teenage years I started to do oil painting and ink drawings so I guess that is when I started to view myself as an artist. To be honest I have forgotten exactly when I started painting ... it was so many years ago. As for doll making, I used to buy Doll Reader magazine and loved the dolls. When living in Karratha, in Western Australia, one of my neighbors got me some ceramic greenware and I made my first ceramic doll ... I was hooked!! After we moved back to NSW, I discovered I could buy greenware to make my own porcelain dolls so my husband bought me a kiln and I bought some greenware and and it wasn’t long before I wanted to make my own original doll! TSL - What made you choose dolls as an artistic outlet? KW - I have always loved dolls, as a child I found them magical. TSL - What inspires you - why do you do what you do? KW - I get inspiration from children in real life and from photos in magazines. I guess I am not really inspired by a particular face, just an expression, a twinkle in the eyes, or a sorrowful look that I want to capture. TSL - Your characters have endearing expressions and seem to have their own story to tell. Can you share how this creative process works? KW - To be honest I really don’t know. I have never understood how I do what I do .. I just shape the clay until it has a particular look that I am trying to express in the doll! Sometimes it doesn’t work and I end up with something completely different from what I was trying to achieve. TSL - Do you have a favorite creation? KW - I have a few favorites, Nyssa, Talyssa and Lenny are probably the ones I am most fond of. From left: Lenny, Talyssa and Abby

TSL - You have had an amazing career, how do you manage the stresses of success? KW - I usually go quiet for a while when I am stressed or upset about anything. I have had to learn to take time to think logically about any problems that may arise instead of jumping in and trying to sort things out instantly (which is what comes naturally to me!). My new approach is to sleep on things and then make decisions!! I am lucky to have Grace manage most of the hardest parts of the process by taking the orders and shipping. TSL - When did you actually begin making BJD dolls? KW - I discovered resin BJD’s in about 2006 after I had retired from making porcelain dolls. I loved BJD’s and began sculpting again. Initially, I made small numbers of limited edition dolls and cast them myself but became allergic to the resin. I now collaborate with Grace from Jpodolls to have my resin dolls factory produced for preorder. 1st resin BJD

TSL - You are admired for your philanthropic endeavors - tell us about that. KW - HOPE was made to raise money for a Charity called “3 Angels Nepal”. She was our best seller of all time and we raised approximately $90,000 US Dollars!! The support we got from collectors when selling Hope was overwhelming and made me so happy and grateful to be able to be part of this.

The money was used to help rescue young girls who were sold into prostitution and slavery by setting up manned booths at the border to stop the rickshaws before they could take the girls out of Nepal.

Hope

3 Angels also used some of the money to buy land for growing vegetables for the orphanage where they housed the girls who were rescued. They purchased a water truck and water pumping facility to supply water for surrounding villages which brings them an income so they can continue their rescue work and help meet the expenses for the orphanage.

“Hope was our highest selling doll of all time. She very literally brought hope to the 3 Angels Nepal group. it is one of the best things I have ever been able to do in my career.”

TSL -I understand that you have mentored artists on their journey to recognition. What is the most important thing an aspiring artist can learn from you (or your experience)? KW - I am always happy to help others with advice or help them to understand how to do things like make molds, etc. I think the best advice I can offer new artists is not to expect a masterpiece with Essie, 25th anniversary doll their first sculpt (mine was pretty bad) and don’t be discouraged, we all get better with each new sculpt. TSL - So what is next in the Kaye Wiggs doll story? KW - I am looking forward to my latest adventure in doll making! Her name is Sienna and she is a doll that has been downsized and modified from one of my old porcelain dolls and made as a resin BJD. She is about 18 tall, a small limited edition and will not be offered as a pre-order. More information will be available mid year. In the future, I plan on doing more of my old porcelain dolls in resin, for sale in the same way as Sienna. I look forward to launching a new website and collaborative Facebook page in the very near future! JPOP dolls will still be offering my other dolls and any new sculpts I may do on a pre-order basis.

Editors note: Kaye has never quit growing and innovating throughout her amazing career. She is active on social media through Resin Cafe and her Facebook fan page. She is generous with her time in helping aspiring doll artists get their careers started. My thanks to you Kaye, for taking time out of a very busy schedule to talk to the STAND readers!
