Spring comes late here in the mountains, but it is finally here! My thoughts immediately turn to getting our vegetable garden put in ... so I’ll do that as soon as this week of rain is finished! This year we are having fun getting started with some baby chicks. For a couple of city folks who moved to the country, this is a milestone. In this issue, I have taken a step to the side. Instead of an artist interview, I have added sections about the STAND photo contest, a new award, a show report, insight into one of our sponsors and a 10 year celebration. Interestingly, I have had a number of people ask about increasing the field of dolls represented in the magazine. I am resistant to the suggestion because I have not seen the quantity or depth of photographic creativity in other doll genres. My appreciation of the BJD and Fashion doll world is in the way that our contributors pose, style and dress their dolls ... the warmth and love shines through, and that is what I want to capture. My sincere thanks for the fresh, spring photos received from our contributors and to our sponsors, who make this magazine possible. Everyday the slate is blank - let’s write on it together,

Inside CODENOiR Article By: Dorothy Drake Background: After 10 years in the international BJD marketplace, the company was established in 2015, focusing on fashions for BJD’s. Code Noir means black label, or best quality, in French. Unfortunately, there were negative historical meanings associated to the word. Wanting to keep the original meaning, the company revised how CODENOiR was written and added a heart above the i to illustrate their mission which is to “spread the love to all, via our designs and products.” Quick Facts Staff: 6 Full-time colleagues Management Ta - Director Komi - Designs and Development
Vicky - Marketing and Customer Service Rivaliie - Photographing
Design Themes: Inspiration is one of the challenges that face the designers. Themes are chosen, such as fantasy, historical, Alice in Wonderland. etc... The current theme is casual wear, designs can be used for dolls and people. CODENOiR encourages fans to email with ideas or concepts. Production time: The clothing line, from concept to the finished sample, can take 3-5 months. After confirmation of the final sample, production time is 1-2 months, depending on the production size. Cosplay: CODENOiR not only produces BJD clothes, but also clothing for the doll owners. Komi has studied tailoring and her father is a professional fashion pattern designer, creating a dual design atmosphere. The Future CODENOiR works in collaboration with various makers, such as AIMERAR, DOLLZONE, and PEAKS WOODS. Designers from both the doll maker and CODENOiR develop ideas and concepts. Then, working together they start a cross-over development plan. CODENOiR’s future plans do not include developing original dolls but will include additional launches of cross-over dolls. Other future plans include development of designs and working with a fashion brand for people, but also to launch their fashions in a BJD doll version. The company is also looking to cooperate with some ACG licensors for launching licensed BJD’s. 2018 STAND Magazine Photo Contest Theme Gatsby! It is our pleasure to show the winners and some of the 2018 photo entries. The team of 3 judges had a tough time choosing just one first prize. Although, due to space restrictions, we could not show every entry, many thanks to all who entered.
“The flapper embodied a new attitude for women, and in many ways, the beginning of the modern women’s rights movement. These young flappers are on stage, in the spotlight for the world to see - entertaining us with a song representing the new “voice” for women.” Deborah Hood

She is the younger sibling of a flapper who attends endless parties and sings the latest jazz tunes - and wants to be just like her. Show Report
PNW show report submitted by Alisa Walsworth
The Pacific NorthWest BJD Expo held its 7th annual conference at the Double Tree Hotel, Seattle Airport April 26-28, 2018. Themed, GATSBY, for 2.5 days attendees enjoyed panels, workshops, the Volks Meet & Greet and evening sharing events. Rave reviews were given for the amazing salesroom filled with stars from the BJD world, many of whom brought limited editions just for the show. PNW staff commented that it was especially fun to see hotel staff and teachers, attending a different conference, shopping in the salesroom. Yup, truly something for everyone! The con doll, mini-Phoebe by Nikki Britt, was presented during the opening reception. PNW special guest artist Connie Lowe sculpted 8 Eloise just for attendees. During the Friday evening Speakeasy Social, a panel explored the history of BJD’s in America from several different points of view with commentators; Hideyoski Shigeta (Volks USA at the beginning), Patti Carlson (early collector perspective), Lauren King (historical ties prior to Volks). There was also a display of early BJD dolls. The History of BJD panel segued to the PNW introduction of their new Creative Inspiration Award that will be presented yearly to the BJD artist or company whose work inspires other artists to build and grow in new directions. See next page. Please enjoy this photo journal of the PNW experience!

Creative Inspiration Award During preparation for the History of BJD in America panel, PNW staff recognized that when the Volks company introduced BJD dolls to the American collector, artists fell in love with the genre. The Volks contibution led to the industry expanding in a number of directions by enterprising artists around the world. With that in mind, PNW has introduced a Creative Inspiration Award, to be given each year to the entnepreneaur, artist or company that has inspired the expansion (to the next level) of creative works within the BJD industry. It is our pleasure to announce that Paulette Goodreau received the 1st annual award for her early and significant work in the industry. Paulette not only produced dolls, she was able to bridge the delivery gap in getting BJD dolls to the American collector. Paulette, fans and collectors thank you for your love of dolls, your energy and hard work! Guest Artist, Connie Lowe presented the 1st annual Creative Inspiration Award to a very surprised Paulette Goodreau. The dolls in front are ABC dolls by Paulette from Connie’s personal collection. The dolls were sold via silent auction with proceeds donated to a non-profit of Paulette’s choice.
