MAGAZINE

Mustang enthusiasts have asked for a magazine that has no ads, no sales pitches, and no bogus “fillers” to eat up space. They have asked for a magazine that is free, easy to access, and nothing but focused on Mustang pictures and content. They have asked for a magazine produced and written by Mustang owners. They have asked for a magazine that highlights the daily drivers and the average Mustang that is driven and is not a trailer queen. They have asked for the chance to one day have their ride, their group, their club, or their cause to be recognized in print or online. It is our absolute pleasure to meet these standards and to give you STANG Magazine. We hope that both our message and our image will be seen in every Mustang community out there. Thank you Mustang fans and enjoy your ride!

TALKING WITH TJ

As we begin our journey into the descent of madness that is my mind and the crazy antics of my life, I would like to first introduce myself. My name is TJ, blah blah blah, that sums it up and all you need to know. Whew… got past the CRAP no one cares about! Now for the good stuff.

Mustang culture is one that is very unique and brings together people from all walks of life. One thing is for sure though, the STANG Mag crew isn’t your typical crew. We are a bunch of weirdos, oddballs, and outcasts. We party hard and live by our ride or die motto and have adventures like no other.

From partying in various spots all over the U.S., to touring some of America’s most haunted sites, to having my ass spanked by a beautiful Latina in Las Vegas in front of a restaurant packed full of guests (and owning it), it’s never a dull moment! All I can say is... strap in, rev the shit out of your motor, and let’s go!

IT’S A PLANE! IT’S A HORSE! NO, IT’S THE FORD MUSTANG

Welcome to 2023 STANG enthusiasts! We all have love for the car the has brought so much joy to our lives, but did you know where our heritage and lineage came from? Well, that is really up to debate and this has created some serious conflict between the different camps. Lee Iacocca was actually quoted for saying that the Mustang was named after a college football team that inspired him with their athleticism, just like his new sports car would inspire America, but Ford Designer John Najjar, who was involved in designing the Mustang prototype was a huge fan of the P-51 Mustang plane. Najjar felt the new car should be named after the plane that helped the US win the World War II, which would help the car embody the American spirit. The plane association was not used partly because of the problem of creating an appropriate logo. Another theory was that it was named by the Ford Market Research Manager and horse breeder Robert Eggert, after he was inspired when his wife gave him a book

JOKE OF THE MONTH

TO TELL ME MY ZIPPER WAS OPEN, THIS GIRL SAID TO ME, “YOUR GARAGE IS OPEN".. I ASKED,

YOU SEE MY FORD MUSTANG GT SUPER SPORT?"

She said “No, but I did see your mini cooper with two flat tires”

titled The Mustangs. So which version of the story is true? Well that is up to debate, after all, the car was originally developed to be called the Cougar, complete with a logo. However, it is commonly believed to be a combination of these theories.

Well, I prefer to think that the Mustang traces its lineage back to the P-51 Mustang. Why? because it is one badass plane. First the goodies... there are three different variants of the P-51 Mustang which was used in World War II. The First one which was the P-51A, was powered by an Allison V-1710-81 1200 hp, 12-cylinder V engine. The second was the P-51B, which was powered by a Packard Merlin V-1650-3/7 1380/1420 hp, two staged supercharged, 12-cylinder V engine. The third was the P-51D, which was powered by the Packard Merlin V-1650-7 1695 hp, two staged supercharged, 12-cylinder V engine. Holy hell that’s a lot of power! The fastest Mustang was the P-51B which had a max speed of 440 mph and had the highest max ceiling of 42,000 ft. The P-51A and P-51B

had four .50 Caliber machine guns and the P-51D had six .50 caliber machine guns.

This was a game changer in the European front. Initially, when the B-17 bombers went on raids, they were accompanied by the P-47, P-38, and Spitfire fighters, however due to the range of these fighters they could only escort the bombers so far until they had to turn back leaving the bombers to fend on their own. In fact, Luftwaffe fighters would often wait until the bombers were left alone to attack them. Well, the P-51 Mustang changed that and with the addition of drop-tanks to increase their range, suddenly the bombers had support which could escort them deep into Berlin and back. The P-51 Mustang in WWII destroyed an estimated 4,950 enemy aircraft in air-to-air combat and destroyed 4,131 aircraft on the ground, making them the highest scoring US fighter in the Europe Theater of Operations. In addition, two P-51 pilots received the Medal of Honor during World War II.

“DID

TALKING WITH TJ

IT’S A PLANE! IT’S A HORSE! NO, IT’S THE FORD MUSTANG

Perhaps one of the most iconic groups who flew the P-51 Mustang were the men from the 332nd Fighter Group known as the Red Tails, which were trained at a segregated air base in Tuskegee, Alabama. They got their name from the distinctive red paint used on their tail of their plane. Despite the many barriers these men had to face, they overcame and achieved legendary status through their skill and fortitude. These brave men escorted the Fifteenth Air Force into heavy strategic bombing raids into Czechoslovakia, Austria, Hungary, Poland, and Germany from May 1944 to April 1945, in addition to making many successful strafing attacks on airdromes, railroads, highways, bridges, reiver traffic, troop concentration, radar facilities, power stations, and other targets.

Well, as you can see, this is one bad ass plane! Whether it really was the inspiration of our beloved Mustang or just a myth, who knows but I will say this, if anything and at bare minimum the P-51 and the Ford Mustang are both American designed and dreamed, and it was the P-51 Mustang that helped win World War II, which set the path for America until when the Mustang was developed. So, if the P-51 Mustang was not as influential in winning World War II, well, our beloved Mustang would not exist as it does today. So, cheers to the P-51 Mustang! Can you see the resemblance between the P-51 Mustang and the Ford Mustang in the pictures?

IS THERE A MORE FUN OR EXCITING CAR ON THIS EARTH TO DRIVE THAN A MUSTANG?

My Mustang journey began with a 1967 Mustang coupe back in high school. Growing up we had a few Mustangs in the family. My mom drove a 1965 Coupe and my older sister drove a 1969 Mach 1. I have been blessed to have many since then, my oldest daughter’s first car was a 1968 Coupe and my middle daughter’s car is a 2006 Mustang.

And I’m already working on passing the Mustang passion onto my grandkids.

I purchased this 2014 Shelby GT 500 from a friend in my Mustang group about two years ago. She had taken great care of it. The car was amazing. Since then I have added the Shelby CS 40 wheels, had the supercharger ported and polished, put on a carbon fiber hood, added a few extra shiny parts along with the JLT cold air intake, and the tune to increase the horsepower just a little bit north of 755. Making this convertible, a head turning go-getter.

I look forward to the warmer weather this year to get back out there with some of my Mustang enthusiasts, to do some car shows, cruises, and just a nice evening drive with the top down with my lovely wife by my side. I can’t really say enjoying my hair blowing in the air while I cruise down the road anymore, because I have no hair. Lol. But is there a more fun or exciting car on this earth to drive than a Mustang? Answer: I don’t think so.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST–2005 V6 & 2014 GT

THESE TWO MUSTANGS ARE MY DREAMS COME TRUE. THAT’S WHY I CALL THEM MY “BEAUTY AND THE BEAST”.

My Mustang passion started when my cousin let me drive his 1967 Fastback, I was sold! Due to life’s journey (marriage, kids, everyday life) I had to wait 30 years to get my first Mustang, my 2005 V6 “Lexi”. She was a diamond in the rough ready for an overhaul, which over a five year time frame I did just that! My inspiration for my 2005 was my dad who gave me my love for cars. I turned my 2005 into a tribute car to my dad and his beloved tractor, hence the blue stripes. I also want to raise awareness through my 2005 on Elderly Abuse in rehab/nursing homes where unfortunately my dad died due to a TBI from a fall in one.

Once I was happy with the outcome of my 2005 Mustang, I went looking for the power of a GT Mustang. My friend Al, from England, found my 2014 GT Mustang “Maxxi” online. I bought my 2014 on that very same day. To my surprise, when I ran the Marti Report, he came back as 1 of 3 out of the factory with specific options out of 134k+ 2014 Mustangs made! I never thought I would own a convertible, but it’s a blast! These two Mustangs are my dreams come true. That’s why I call them my “Beauty and the Beast”.

BLACK WIDOW–2019 GT

I CHOSE THE BLACK WIDOW NAME BECAUSE OF THE DEADLY BUT BEAUTIFUL LOOK SHE GIVES OFF.

I bought my first Mustang in 1999 (2000 Mustang) and from then on, I was in love. Each Mustang has been named, but I chose the Black Widow name because of the deadly but beautiful look she gives off. I’ve also had five pet black widows. There is a preserved black widow that hangs from the rearview mirror. The Black Widow is part of the Black Mustangs Registry.

I’ve sold and bought several Mustangs since then, but when it came time to buy a new one, my son Blade chose this one before he passed away, so it will be kept in the family. I keep a small urn with my son’s ashes in my car so that my son always rides in the Mustang he chose.

NUMBERS AND HAVE A UNDERSTATED COOLNESS THAT IS STILL A HEAD TURNER 50+ YEARS LATER IN DESIGN.

I’ve been a Mustang fan as long as I can remember. I was raised in a racing family, as my dad was a transmission mechanic. During the years while growing up around my dad’s shop, I’ve been able to help build and race quite a few different vehicles. My first build was actually on my mom’s 1990 5.0 Convertible with a built 302 and a 150 shot of Nitrous. Drag Racing it was a huge adrenaline rush until I got to ride in the next build project: 1988 F150 4x4 with a race built 351 Windsor, Vortech Supercharged 1200 horsepower build.

As I got older the opportunity to drive something that could give me a smile every time I got behind the wheel presented itself in late 2019, as I had the opportunity to purchase my first Mustang. It is a 480 HP/420 TQ Bullitt,

6 speed with full Magnaride suspension and a one of a kind color that was legendary to the original Steven McQueen Bullitt Mustang: Hyland Green. These cars were limited production numbers and have a understated coolness that is still a head turner 50+ years later in design. Debadged, tuned exhaust to match the 1968 Bullitt sound, and subtle throwbacks to the start of the muscle car era can be found throughout.

With the help of my best friend, Frank Bodine, we went to work to “Stop the Hop” with BMR suspension components and Steeda end links to dial in the stock Magnaride system. Frank also ceramic coated the car and wheels to help me land a Top 25 placement at Mustangs at Daytona in 2022. I’ve been blessed to be around some amazing Mustang specialty shops since childhood, Higgins Ford Performance in Douglasville, GA for one helped me find a way to fully swap a GT350 Brembo rear brake kit onto the car by doing a full rear spindle swap from the GT350. So far, Bullitt has seen time on the Daytona International Speedway, Suches Loop, and Blood Mountain in North Georgia, Mustangs At Daytona, and numerous car shows throughout the West Georgia area. I’m looking forward to seeing Ponies in the Smokies and competing with family at Mustangs at Daytona this year!

CALI-SPECIAL–2016 GT/CS

MY LOVE FOR MUSTANGS ALL STARTED BACK IN 1969 WHEN I WENT TO MY FIRST AUTO SHOW IN NEW YORK CITY.

My love for Mustangs all started back in 1969 when I went to my first auto show in New York City. I saw the 1969 Mustang Mach 1 and the Shelby Mustangs on display there, and I was hooked. I was working part time while going to school and would have to save a long time to be able to get one. I spoke to my parents about the cars and that I would really love to buy one. They said that if I worked and saved up half the money, they would put in the rest so I could get one. It took about a year and a half, but I did it. It was the fall of 1970 when we went to NYC to Gotham Ford to look at the cars. It was the time when they

were closing out the 1970s and the 1971 Mustangs were coming in. I told the salesman that I wanted a stick shift and he showed me a Shelby GT 500 because the Mach 1 was automatic. Because they were closing them out, he said he would give me the Shelby for the same price. We put down a deposit, and two weeks later we picked it up. I loved the car and kept it for over 30 years, but unfortunately, I had to sell it. After that I had a few different Mustangs from a 1979 up to a 2002 GT Convertible.

When I sold my 2002 GT back in 2012, I was just driving some regular cars but I really missed driving a Mustang. Then in 2015 my daughter purchased the new S550 Mustang Ecoboost in red. I loved that new body style, so I test drove hers and once again fell in love with the Mustang. In 2016, I went looking for a new Mustang for myself. I looked at the GT model, but then saw the California Special Edition. It caught my eye and was hooked again. I live on Long Island, but there were none available here. I found a dealer

in New Jersey that had three of them in stock, but only one with a six-speed transmission. I drove out to the dealer to see the cars, and the six speed one was Triple Yellow with black accents just like my original Shelby. I test drove it and I knew this was the one for me. It had everything I wanted, including the navigation system and the California Special package. It was July and he was trying to get rid of inventory, so he gave me a great deal on it. I put a deposit down and made arrangements to pick it up the following week. This car makes me feel like I’m 18 again, and when my wife and I go for drives around Long Island we always get a lot of looks and thumbs up. With the extra mods on it, it looks like my original Shelby did back in 1970. My California Special gets many first-place trophies at car shows and I will always keep it looking like the day I bought it.

LET’S GET OUT AND DRIVE–2016 SHELBY GT 350

I’ve always questioned why some car enthusiasts spend a fortune on a car just to keep in cooped up with a battery tender and never get it past 100 mph or 5000 rpm. I told myself at an early age if I ever had a really awesome car, I’d drive it year round! I have always been into racing, whether it be NASCAR, IMSA, INDYCAR, or challenging my friends to karting. I’m one of those people that lives and breathes motorsports. This is my third Cobra, with a 1998 Cobra and 2017 GT350 preceding this one.

A massive opportunity came from Randy Runyan in Denver, Colorado in September 2021. He was selling this surgical track weapon and wanted to know if I could give it a home, since I was actively selling mine. I said no doubt! Upon doing some research, my GT350 buddies helped locate the original builder Dillon Holt (CA). This car has been all across the US! I flew out to Denver to meet Randy and pick up the car and drove it 1200 miles to Cincinnati, OH

to show it to my dad, who taught me to love muscle cars. Then, it was time to drive 900 miles home to St. Augustine, FL. I have driven this car everywhere in between since! I can’t help but drive this car to the grocery store, to church, and still stretch its legs on backroads and race tracks! I just can’t get enough! I have been splitting my time between Florida and Tennessee, making new friends with fantastic groups like Mustangs at Daytona and Red Mirror events.

You can find me on Instagram - @cobrakeeg. Let’s get out and drive!

NIGHTMARE–2016 ROUSH RS3

NEVER DID I THINK I’D BE SHOPPING FOR A CAR COUNTRYWIDE ON THE INTERNET.

This is a 2016 Ford Mustang GT with the Roush RS3 package. The car is pretty much a stock Roush Mustang. Modifications are mainly cosmetic including window louvers, engine covers and Lambo doors. Future plans include upgrading the fuel system to phase 2 and maybe a VMP package to boost HP to 727.

I’ve been in love with Mustangs for as long as I can remember. Every cool 80s movie had someone driving an awesome 5.0 Convertible. So, it was a dream car for me to own. But as I got older and saw the different packages being offered, it got harder to choose. I was always intrigued with the Saleen Mustangs, but never could afford one.

I was finally at the point where I could afford to get the car I dreamed of and then COVID hit. People all over the country

were buying the cars I put on my wish list as I waited patiently for my tax refund to show up. I had to watch countless Saleen Mustangs, GT500s, GT350s, SVTs and other Roush Mustangs slowly go away. Never did I think I’d be shopping for a car countrywide on the internet. Luckily, in the middle of nowhere New Jersey at a high-end used import car dealer, he had this bad ass looking Roush Mustang with the Lambo doors and I thought for sure someone was going to grab this up. This car was a one-owner gem with 17,000 original miles and a clean Carfax. I couldn’t ask for anything more.

Now that I had the car, it needed a name. As I was driving along, I decided to put on some music. First song to come on was “All American Nightmare” by Hinder. Ok cool song. Next was “Nightmare” by Avenged Sevenfold. It was a sign… her name would be “Nightmare”.

SINCE I FIRST SAW MY FIRST 93 COBRA ALMOST 30 YEARS HAS PASSED, BUT IT STILL HOLDS A SPECIAL PLACE IN MY HEART.

To me as a young kid in 1993 when SVT released the final send off of the Foxbody Mustang in the form of the COBRA it was total perfection. Since I first saw my first 93 Cobra almost 30 years has passed, but it still holds a special place in my heart.

This is my third 93 Cobra and this example is #1608 out of 4393 1993 Cobras made (not counting the R model) and 1 of 448 produced that have a black exterior and black cloth interior and making the car even less common is the lack of a factory sunroof. The exterior of this Cobra has been kept stock in appearance except for being lowered 1 inch, thanks to H&R springs. The interior of the vehicle remains mostly stock except for the addition of a Hurst short throw

shifter and a boost gauge mounted on the drivers A pillar. The performance mods done to the engine are as follows: a polished Kenne bell 2.1 Flowzilla has been added along with a ported GT40 lower that has been ported by TMoss. The injectors were replaced with 42 lb. and the in tank pump was changed out to ensure the engine had an adequate flow of fuel. The throttle body is a 90 mm polished Accufab unit and has a 4 inch polished Anderson power pipe with a Pro M mass air flow. The Ford Motorsport B cam sends out its beautiful harmony through a set of shorty headers that pass through an off road H pipe before exiting through a set of stainless Pypes Violator mufflers with 2.5 inch polished exhaust tips. The engine produces a little over 400hp at the rear wheels (so frame connectors were added). The Kenne Bell makes its power almost from idle and paired with 3:55 gears the car is incredibly fun to drive.

“JUST THE TIP

WAIT, YOU’RE PUTTING THAT IN THERE?

We’ve seen multiple tropes/memes/videos about people falling for the “Better get the winter air in your tires! It’s January! LOL!”. True that it’s funny, but did you know that there kind of is such a thing? Winter air? We could call it Summer air as well.

You put air in your tires, and typically, it is just that. Air. What we breathe every day. But ‘Air’ is a mixture of different gases. Roughly – 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and small amounts of other gases such as neon, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, etc. Here’s the ‘science-y’ part. Winter air, or Summer air, is not the air that we breathe. It’s the nitrogen only.

What’s the difference you may ask. Oxygen is prone to expansion under heat, or contraction in the cold. Take a hot air balloon for example. They blow in ‘Air’, apply heat through a burner which causes the molecules to expand, then they let a little bit of that expanded air out of the top of the balloon, causing less air pressure inside the balloon than there is on the outside, so the balloon goes up. What is expanding in the balloon are the oxygen molecules.

Nitrogen molecules have a larger structure and are far more stable in heat/cold. They do not expand as much. Filling your tires with nitrogen will give you a far more stable air pressure profile, regardless of if it being the middle of Summer in Arizona, the middle of Winter in Minnesota, racing on the street or racing on the track. Your tire pressure will stay the same which we know greatly decreases tire wear and improves performance.

The downside of course is that it’s going to cost more to get air in your tires and it’s not widely available. But for performance/racing applications, it may be something to look into! And stop picking on people who get Winter air. They’re not out of their minds.
