MAGAZINE

Mustang enthusiasts have asked for a magazine that has no ads, no sales pitches, and no bogus “fillers” to eat up space. They have asked for a magazine that is free, easy to access, and nothing but focused on Mustang pictures and content. They have asked for a magazine produced and written by Mustang owners. They have asked for a magazine that highlights the daily drivers and the average Mustang that is driven and is not a trailer queen. They have asked for the chance to one day have their ride, their group, their club, or their cause to be recognized in print or online. It is our absolute pleasure to meet these standards and to give you STANG Magazine. We hope that both our message and our image will be seen in every Mustang community out there. Thank you Mustang fans and enjoy your ride!

TALKING WITH TJ

As we begin our journey into the descent of madness that is my mind and the crazy antics of my life, I would like to first introduce myself. My name is TJ, blah blah blah, that sums it up and all you need to know. Whew… got past the CRAP no one cares about! Now for the good stuff.

Mustang culture is one that is very unique and brings together people from all walks of life. One thing is for sure though, the STANG Mag crew isn’t your typical crew. We are a bunch of weirdos, oddballs, and outcasts. We party hard and live by our ride or die motto and have adventures like no other.

From partying in various spots all over the U.S., to touring some of America’s most haunted sites, to having my ass spanked by a beautiful Latina in Las Vegas in front of a restaurant packed full of guests (and owning it), it’s never a dull moment! All I can say is... strap in, rev the shit out of your motor, and let’s go!

THE BIRTH OF THE MUSTANG

Hello Everyone! It’s April and the car season is in full swing. I hope you are ready because I am. April holds a special place in Mustang history. It was on April 17, 1964 that the Ford Mustang was officially introduced at the New York World’s Fair. Essentially the Ford Mustang was a repackaged and restyled Ford Falcon. So how did Ford roll out one of the most successful cars in American history? Instead of focusing on the car for their marketing efforts, they chose to focus on how the Mustang would illicit feelings from the consumer.

To create excitement from the consumers, Ford had bombarded national TV in the days leading up to the introduction of the Mustang with their commercials. There was no talk about engine size, mechanical features, or colors in the commercial. Instead, consumers were exposed to a trendy commercial full of close ups of the Mustang, people having fun on a beach, and people sailing, all with exciting music playing in the background to create the excitement of what it was like owning a Mustang. The imagery imposed

on the consumer was a message that owning a Mustang was equated to a fun, free spirited, and exciting lifestyle. As the images of the Mustang are shown, a very enthusiast voiceover announces “A new generation of Fords, for the new breeds of Americans who want stick shift action and room for four, who collect sportscar badges and trading stamps, who wants the elegance of a European touring car and until now had to settle for basic transportation… Mustang is the one car that is designed to be designed by you”.

Mustang was marketed as a groundbreaking car and it was. The Mustang had a completely unique style, so Ford wanted to create a young fresh culture to go with the car which resulted in 418,000 units sold in its first calendar year.

Whether you love it or hate it, you know what a Mustang is and that is every marketer’s dream. To market a product so well that it becomes a household name. Proudly this culture still rings through today. Whether you’re a kid or at a retirement age, the Mustang brings out the inner kids in all of us. Now we all know that the original Mustang was originally designed as a secretary car, but we have Lee Iacocca to thank, who reached out to Carroll Shelby shortly after the release of the Mustang and asked for a significant change. Well, that’s gonna be next month’s article! So for now, enjoy your Mustang and proudly continue this 60 year old Mustang legacy.

Let me start by saying that owning a Mustang is not a fun hobby, it’s a way of life and I’m all in. I thought I had my dream car when I bought my Mercedes but after test driving a 2020 10-speed automatic Mustang GT, I was sold and I traded my Mercedes for it the following week. My husband and I attended Cruising the Coast for the first time last year and he had a chance to race it and win. Since then I’ve traded it for a 2021 Convertible 6-speed, manual transmission, which is the car I currently own. I am looking forward to attending many car shows and events and meeting Mustang enthusiasts. I enjoy the early morning cold starts and late night cruises.

If you asked me if I thought I’d be writing an article for STANG Magazine for my car this time last year I would’ve said no. If you asked me if I would be writing it about a different car than the 2005 Roush Mustang I had I would’ve said hell no. I love seeing the looks I get when I get out of my car after blowing their doors off and showing off my rev matching when downshifting. I enjoy a little competition every now and then. It stems from my military background. I was a Medical Lab Technician and Korean Linguist for Military Intelligence in the U.S. Army. I was always known as a fierce competitor. Now I flex my muscles in a different way, behind the wheel of my badass stang.

THIS CAR IS BUILT IN LOVING MEMORY OF MY MOM, CINDY.

My mom bought this Mustang in 1978. It was her first car in high school. She was driving this car the night she met my dad, just “cruising the ave.” They ended up meeting up down there a few times and got married in 1980. My dad used to deliver pizza in it in the early 80s. During that time, the original 289 died, so my dad pulled a 302 out of a Mustang in the junkyard. The car got wrecked and parked in storage for what ended up being roughly 20 years.

In that time, family and kids took priority over the dream of always restoring the Mustang. When I was a kid, it was stored across the street from where I lived and my friends and I would go sit in it and act like we were driving it. We got it out of storage in 2006, and I had it running that same night it got to

our house. We worked on getting it drivable, and got to enjoy it a little bit before my mom passed away in 2008. In 2011, I started working at a body shop and the guys there helped me get all the body and paint work done. I would tow it up on the weekends and slowing chip away at it with the help of some amazing friends. We finally got it painted in 2020. This car is built in loving memory of my mom, Cindy. The color is called Black Amethyst (Amethyst is/was her birthstone) and we put some of her ashes in the paint when it was sprayed too. She will forever be a part of her car and always with us while we cruise the ave.

My husband and I bought Lucifer in Summer of 2020 as a daily driver for myself. Well things escalated quickly after we bought the car and moved right down to South Florida where my husband began working for Palm Beach Dyno.

We started with an E85 tune and before I knew it, I wanted more power so we opted for the Vortech V3 JT. I mainly use the car as a daily driver and my husband is the hired driver for events that we race in. The quickest the car has ran has been 10.0 at 140 mph. Lucifer has won 10.50 Index races and

Christened as “Molly” in the early 2000s, this 1966 Coupe resides in Hanover, PA. Purchased by the late Jeff Kolegraf, and then handed down to his daughter Amber, she’s currently owned and cared for by Paul Nichols.

The restoration on this car could be called a team effort, with Jeff getting the exterior finished, Amber doing a good bit of mechanical repairs herself, and with Paul finishing the interior.

Paul purchased the Mustang in 2020 from a dealership. Amber and Paul got in touch with each other on Facebook, with the assistance of the dealership. Paul wanted to make sure that Amber could see that her Dad’s project was going to be continued in earnest. “I believe that Mustangs are not just cars. They are a part of us. I wanted Amber to know that, every step of the way, I believed her father was with me when I began the interior restoration in 2021”, says Paul.

For the back seat, Paul purchased the seat cover from TMI. For the front seats, he purchased entirely new custom seats from TMI. The door panels and dash pad also came from TMI. The center console was added in 2021, and was purchased from CJ Pony. New bumpers were installed and the 6-cylinder automatic has had extensive mechanical TLC, enough so that longer drives for car shows are possible.

I LOVE ALL CLASSIC CARS...

In the late 90s I owned a 1995 red Mustang. When I first bought it, I didn’t know what I was getting myself into. I knew nothing about Mustangs but I ended up falling in love with it. Fast forward a few years and two kids later, it became a hassle dealing with the car seats so I traded it for an SUV. 20 years later in late 2020, I came across a listing on FB marketplace for a first-generation Mustang, showed it to my oldest son, and we browsed through other Mustangs for sale and we pretty much just left it at that. My son then found this ‘78 Mustang, bought it, and gave it to me as a surprise Christmas gift. I was speechless! I never thought I would own a Mustang again.

I learned from the prior owner that the car was originally purchased in PA, apparently by an older woman who rarely drove it. After her death the car went to the funeral director as partial payment on her burial services. The funeral director was a large man and he became unable to go up and down the stairs and used the Mustang II to help pay for the installation of an elevator. The owner of the elevator company sold the car to a collector who kept it 4-5 years before selling it in May

of 2019. The prior owner also told us he drove it for about 150 miles and the car ran perfectly. He added that the car has an unusual feature: a faux key hole in the driver’s side fender. Apparently, it was attached with double sided tape and put on the fender to fake out would be thieves into believing you had a car alarm. It’s believed to be a 70s thing and it was left on it and remains on the car to this day. The car had roughly 4,800 original miles when I got it and now has close to 7,000. It has the original paint and interior, auto transmission, V6, power steering and brakes, and no modifications. As good as it gets for a 42 year old car. I often hear people refer to this Mustang as the “ugly” Mustang, or “this isn’t a Mustang”, and I am ok with that. I still love it no matter what. I love taking it to car shows just to hear the stories as there’s always someone who had one or knows someone who had one with a great story to tell. I love all classic cars but Mustangs will always have a special place in my heart.

I’VE BEEN INTO MUSCLE CARS SINCE I WAS IN SINGLE DIGITS.

I’ve been into muscle cars since I was in single digits. There was a shop down the street from my house that worked on MOPARs and I got to see all of the old MOPARs at that shop. It was great. You would think I would have owned one when I started driving. I’ve owned many vehicles in my life but my two favorites are ‘68 GTO which I no longer own but wish I still did and my ‘03 Mach 1.

MEMBERS OF THE STANG MAG FAMILY ARE MORE PASSIONATE ABOUT FUN AND INCLUSION THAN THEY ARE THEIR CARS AND THAT SAYS A LOT!

Seven years ago my son Chris purchased his first car, a 1997 Red Mustang. That is when my obsession with Mustangs started. We went to a Mustang Performance shop in San Antonio, Texas to pick up some wheels and a transmission for the ‘97 stang and on the Dyno was a Terminator. I looked at my son and said I could roll in that. It was gorgeous. So my quest begins. After looking at many Mustangs I found this 2003 Mach 1 and as soon as I saw it, I knew I wasn’t leaving without it. It had my color combo, Dark Shadow Gray with Black. I instantly had the vision in my head of what it would look like after I took care of the issues it came with and where I wanted it to be. When the previous owner asked what I was going to do with the car, I said I was going to bring it up to the next level and take it to car shows. And that is exactly what I did.

If you asked me if I thought I’d be writing an article for STANG Magazine for my car this time last year I would’ve said no. Every time I get behind the wheel I forget how old I am and it takes me back to my youth when life was simple, fun, and driving a muscle car was what we did back in the 70s and 80s. I fell in love with the body style when it first came out and now that my kids are all grown and out of the house, I actually own one and I’m still enjoying it. My son now has a Mach 1. Machs run in the family I guess you could say.

I belong to two Mustang clubs here in Texas - MOCA (Mustang Owners Club of Austin) and Wild Side Stangs. The car holds three 1st place, four 2nd place, one top 25 and one top 40 trophies. I can’t have a cookie cutter Mach 1, this car had to be different than the other Machs, regardless of what the purists say. “The Mach” is garage kept and sees around 1-2K miles of Texas roads per year. I have a bunch of bolt on parts to add horsepower to the car which sits at 400HP on stock

MY OBSESSION WITH THE 1970 MUSTANG STARTED BACK WHEN I WAS 14 YEARS OLD.

I met Daniel Ramey at a Beltway Mustang show and won my spot with STANG Magazine in their Carlisle Ford Nationals display. Needless to say I wasn’t sure what to expect being that I didn’t know the people attending and was going by myself.

My obsession with the 1970 Mustang started back when I was 14 years old. I had just started my first job and quickly got the itch to buy a car to start working on. My grandfather had a small car lot back then. My parents and I had stopped by one day to visit and there sitting on his lot was a 1970 Mustang. The body design had instantly caught my eye. He offered to take my for a spin and I was hooked! We came back and engaged in some price negotiating which wound up with him selling me the car for $175. I had owned that car until I was about twenty years old and ended with me selling it out of youthful ignorance.

If you asked me if I thought I’d be writing an article for STANG Magazine for my car this time last year I would’ve said no. Fast forward many years to 2009, I happened across my current 1970 Mustang. After purchasing it and performing a total teardown, it turned out that the old girl wound up needing pretty much every panel replaced with the exception of the roof and the inner A and B pillars. I had picked away at her over the course of the last thirteen years and finally got her on the road again October 2022.

My passion for cars started at a very young age. I used to go to Woody’s Speed Shop in my hometown when I was 8 or 9 and watch the guys work on cars. Eventually they paid me to clean up and take out trash and such. One day a 1967 Shelby Convertible rolled in and I was hooked!

WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING AT IS A COMBINATION OF MY DREAM AND MY COUSIN’S VISION.

To say I’ve got “Ford blue” in my blood really isn’t stretching the truth. My Dad and my uncles owned a small-town Ford dealership when I was growing up. I was raised in the family business and starting pushing a broom and washing windows when I was only 9 years old, eventually graduating into detailing cars and service work through the years. At the ripe old age of 12, the first 1969 Mach 1 landed at the dealership. I was hooked. I swore I’d own one of those awesome muscle cars one day.

That day came roughly 35 years later when I bought my car on Ebay. It was an “okay” car up until the day a deer got in

If you asked me if I thought I’d be writing an article for STANG Magazine for my car this time last year I would’ve said no. If you asked me if I would be writing it about a different car than the 2005 Roush Mustang I had I would’ve said hell no. I loved that car but acquiring this one reinvigorated my passion for car shows and events!

I met Daniel Ramey at a Beltway Mustang show and won my spot with STANG Magazine in their Carlisle Ford Nationals display. Needless to say I wasn’t sure what to expect being that I didn’t know the people attending and was going by myself.

my way and crunched my cruiser. I was heartbroken. On the bright side, my cousin Dale Boesch in Humphrey, Nebraska not only owned the body shop that his dad and my dad had started, but he’s become one of the finest street rod builders in the business. I told him “Let’s do it right”, and the results are the car you see on these pages.

The STANG Mag family welcomed me in from the very start and made me feel like one of their own!

What you are looking at is a combination of my dream and my cousin’s vision. Dale’s shop turned my pony car into an award-winning muscle car. There are countless modifications to perfect the fit and finish of all the body panels. The Moss Green Pearl color is a custom mix designed by Dale and the

smoke silver and bright orange stripes from end to end (including the engine bay) grab a lot of attention at the car shows. We’ve won multiple honors with the car such as “Builders Choice” as well as “Mustang Madness Best Street Machine” at recent Goodguys’ events.

Inside the detailed engine compartment is a healthy 351 Cleveland engine from a 70s Roush NASCAR. The personalized Jack Roush high-rise intake and racing heads boast 425 horsepower that makes the car yearn to run on the track. There’s plenty of powder coated and painted one-off parts to dress up the old school engine. Behind the motor, a Bowler Performance Automatic Overdrive transmission delivers the torque to a 9” Narrowed rear end assembly with 3.91 gears and traction lock.

The chassis consists of Total Control Products power rack and pinion steering plus Ride Tech air suspension at all four corners. Budnik brand wheels were custom painted and outfitted with Mustang center caps that complement the detailed 12” Wilwood disk brakes.

On the inside, all new interior panels, seats and center console are covered in green to match the body along with gray suede inserts accented with orange stripes to coordinate with the exterior theme. A Vintage Air heating and cooling system completes the creature comforts making it a pleasure to cruise on down the highway. The definitive rumble of this thoroughbred horse really turns heads. Innocent bystanders usually hear me coming a long way off before they see this wild stallion.

“JUST THE TIP

IT’S GETTING HOT IN HERE!

We’ve finally hit that time of year where winter starts to ease it grasp, and warmer, more favorable conditions are starting to arrive. Several months ago, we had gone over some Tips to get your car ready for winter, but did you know that you should de-winterize your ride? Now that we’re getting ready to hit the road for cruises and trips, here are a few easy steps to pull your car out of winter mode, and get it ready to roll:

Wash that thing – This is probably the most important thing you do coming out of winter, especially those of us in the northern areas of the country. Road salt that is added to road surfaces to melt ice and snow will wreak havoc on your car. The buildup of salt on your cars exterior will slowing leech away the paint, and will cause more vulnerable exposed metal parts to rust prematurely. While most of the time you may take your car to an automatic car wash, this is one time when a good had wash is essential. Wash

it well, and focus on the undercarriage, wheel wells, and other crevices where salt and road grim could build up and cause damage.

Check tires and alignment – Driving in the winter months can be very difficult on a car. If your like us and live here in Pennsylvania (Nationally known for having the worst roads in the country), driving through potholes, ruts, and anything else on the road can knock your cars alignment out of whack, damage tires, and even speed up the dry rot of tires due to the amount of road salt. Check air pressure and tires for any cuts or visible missing chunks.

Wiper blades – Wiper blades can take a beating during the winter. Running over frozen, snowy windows for extended periods of time can cause the bladed to start to tear. Check them out and change them proactively if you have any concerns, so they don’t tear completely off when you really need them.

Oil change – Some vehicles allow for different oil weights to be run in a cars engine, where a thinner oil can be run in the winter, and heavier, more standard oil in the summer. If you went with a thinner oil blend over the last 3 or months, now is the time to change it back.

NEW MUSTANG BOOK: UNBRIDLED

“The Passion, Performance & Politics Behind America’s Favorite Pony Car examines the lineage of Ford’s famed filly from Henry Ford’s Quadricycle through the new Dark Horse. It delves deep into the internal and external economics and politics that have affected Mustang. It chronicles the design, engineering, manufacturing, and marketing of regular and limited-production models. And it highlights the marque’s most memorable racing exploits.

UNBRIDLED is told from a completely unique perspective that is both familiar - yet captivatingly controversial.

Boasting an incredible array of never-before-published photos of stock and modified Mustangs

provided by owners from Canada, Mexico, Germany, Norway, Belgium, Australia, Switzerland, Japan, the Netherlands, and all across these great United States of America; UNBRIDLED is more than “just another car book.” It’s an American history

We met Rob Walko at a Mustang event and immediately saw his passion and creativity when it comes to photography. Rob was so focused on capturing the best shots that we weren’t sure if he was even enjoying the actual event itself. We were dead wrong. The truth is, Rob was in his happy place and

book in which Mustang is an ever-evolving character.”

Kennedy is a graduate of Wyoming Technical Institute, a former Porsche Premier Technician, a contributing writer for Ford Performance, and a member of both the Mustang Car Club of Omaha and the Mustang Club of America. Kennedy, who co-sponsors and coordinates Ford Performance’s annual Mustang II National Reunions has previously produced a “zero-budget” documentary: Adapt or Die: The Mustang II Story, and has owned 10 Mustangs since acquiring his first Fox-body in 1997. Ranging from base models to V8-powered resto-mods and an ultra-rare Classic II convertible (MCA Gold Award winner), Kennedy’s Mustangs have been featured in Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords, Mustang Monthly, Stang Magazine, and Mustang Times. Intent on penning the definitive account of Mustang’s illustrious history from a genuinely unique and interesting perspective, and complimenting that story with as many high-quality owner-sourced images as possible, Kennedy has gone to extraordinary lengths to independently publish UNBRIDLED on behalf of all those “Mustangers” around the world who love their prized thoroughbreds and yearn to learn more about their legacy.

He is able to capture the moment, help others keep those precious memories, and deliver with detail. We are proud to have him as part of our STANG Magazine family and we would definitely recommend his work. This issue highlights Rob’s Mustang passion and definitely gives you an idea of the creativity this man has. His passion is limitless.
