Did you know ?

Pühajärv means “the Holy Lake”. And Otepää (translates to“bear’s head”) after the shape of the castle hill - which reminds you of a bear’s head. It’s also where in 1224, Bishop Hermann started building the first known brick castle in Estonia, The Stone Fort.

Tere!

The Estonian “Hello” is an abbreviation of “Teretulnud” which means “Welcome”. Tere at TriStar111 and TriStar11.1 Estonia in Otepää! Thank you for choosing this Race!

RACE PACKETS

Registration packet for the 111km distance athletes includes: two bib numbers, numbered swimming cap (you need to wear it during the swim course until the transition area), bike number, 3 helmet numbers, 3 bag numbers, safety pins, 3 plastic bags (“BIKE” bag for biking clothes, “RUN” for running equipment, “STREETWEAR” for warm up equipment) and race guide. Additionally, athletes will receive a wristband for entry to the transition area, bike park, relaxing zone, Energy Night and Star Night. The bib numbers will be attached to the competitors shirt with safety pins or around the chest with an elastic band (the band will not be provided by the organizers). Bike number is attached to the bike frame, and the 3 small number stickers will be attached on the helmet. The largest 3 numbers are for the transition bags. Every athlete is personally responsible for the correct attachment of their race numbers. In the absence of a race number or if the race number is not visible, the race marshal can give the competitor a warning or 3-minute time penalty. Swimming with the bib number is not allowed. On the bike course, you must wear your race number on your back, and on the run course the number must be on the chest. Registration packet for the 11.1km distance athletes includes: two bib numbers, bike number, 1 helmet number, safety pins, swimming cap. Additionally, athletes will receive a wristband for entry to the transition area, bike park, relaxing zone, and Energy Night.

RELAY TEAMS 111km

The competitors can enter the main distance as a three-person relay team, where each person competes in one leg of the race (swim, bike or run). The start for teams is given 11 minutes after the start of individual competitors, at 11h11. The start time is chosen according to last year’s results, when the first team finished the race more than 10 minutes before the first individual competitor.

You will swim here!

Swim: 40min from the start (11:40 for individual athletes, 11:51 for relay teams) Swim + Bike: 5h30min from the start (16:30 for individual athletes; 16:41 for the teams) Swim + Bike + Run: 7h00min from the start (18:00 for all athletes) After the cut-off time has elapsed, all energy stations will be closed, track markings and security will be removed. All competitors still in the course after the cut-off time will be disqualified and they will be obliged to leave the course at the race marshal’s order. Giving up: If you need to abort the race, you’ll have to inform a race marshal as soon as possible! Thank you!

Watch out for these Relay Teams:

The team competition will be a treat for the spectators as the best Estonian athletes from different disciplines will try to beat the professional triathletes. They will have to race fast as relays start 11 minutes after the individuals. The two-time Olympic winner in cross country skiing Andrus Veerpalu, Olympic bronze Jaak Mae, the winner of legendary Vasaloppet Raul Olle, Tour de France multiple stage winner Jaan Kirsipuu, and Estonian cycling champion Kalle Kriit are only a few names worth following.

Organizing the TriStar111Estonia triathlon is a great challenge and its also great fun. And we would like to make a change in the local community and help those who need it the most. Together with LIVESTRONGTM we decided to collect donations for the cancer department of Tallinn’s Children Hospital over the race week. If YOU want to make a difference to the young people’s lives, look for the LIVESTRONGTM team and the info booth on the SPA hotel’s park, get involved, give your donation and wear the LIVESTRONGTM wristband you will receive there. Thank you! AIN-ALAR JUHANSON

The start list for the Estonia race is super impressive. I think the word is out now on the format and the style and you can see by the professionals who have come here, that the über bikers see this format as something that is very interesting. The best bike riders in the business will be racing in Estonia. This is going to be crazy!

Athletes must swim in a counter-clockwise direction, keeping the buoy markers to their left. • Swim course will be marked on the day before the race. • It is mandatory to wear the numbered swim cap during the swim until the transition area! We must be able to see your start number when you exit the water! • Your race number will also be marked on your shoulders. Please do not use any sunscreen, oil, vaseline or body lotion before the marking. • Swim goggles are recommended. • Swimming with the bib number is not allowed. • Swimmers must be at the starting area at least 15 minutes before the start. Your presence will be checked. • During the swim it is illegal to use blades, flippers, socks, gloves or diving equipment. • Maximum allowed wetsuit thickness is 5mm. Wetsuits are not allowed, if water temperature is over 22°C. • The swimming distance will not take place if water temperature is below 14°C. • Water temperature will be measured at least one hour before start and after that the decision of the head marshal about allowing wetsuits or cancelling the swim will be made public.

T1 swim/bike

After the swim, pick up your „BIKE“ bag and go to the clothing tent. Changing clothes is only allowed in the transition tent. Put your swimming gear (cap, goggle, calypso) into the BIKE bag and give it to the organizers (in the Dropoff zone). Do not leave anything behind in the transition area! For RELAY TEAMS, the relay will take place in the designated relay area, where the cyclist can wait for his team member in full gear, with the helmet attached and the bib number on his back. The swimmer takes off his wetsuit in the transition tent and completes the exchange to the cyclist with a high-five. The cyclist takes his bike from the rack and pushes it to the exit, then starts the 100km bike leg.

BIKE 100km

Short distance athletes will ride one 10 km lap on the following route: Pühajärve village - Tamme av. - Kolga road - old roller track - Sihva - Pühajärve. ATTENTION! Bike course has difficult profile, with big altitude differences! • 111km distance athletes will take 3 laps, and ca 1100m climbing altitude. • Traffic rules must be obeyed. • Energy station (with water, sports drink and fruits) is in Mäe street in Otepää. • Athletes are allowed to take their own food and drink to the bike course, but the packages may not be left on the track or beside the track. Bike bottles must be tossed only at the designated spots at the aid stations (ecozones). • Each competitor has to follow his own progress on his bike computer to know how many laps he has left. • The use of a helmet is mandatory. The helmet must be securely attached the whole time the racer is in contact with his bike. • Drafting is allowed only in the 11.1km race. • In the 111 distance race, no drafting off another bike or any other vehicle is allowed. These tips are useful!

HOW TO: Transitons & Bags

Both transition areas T1 and T2 are located at the same area. Bike park and transition area are divided. Checking in your bike and transition bags. Athletes can take their bikes and other gear to transition area only at times shown in the schedule. Bike shoes may also be attached to the bike, no other equipment on the bike. Transition Bags. In the “BIKE” bag the athlete puts a towel, bike clothes, socks, gloves and other things he needs on the bike course. If bike shoes are not attached to the bike, they have to be in the “BIKE” bag as well. “RUN” bag is for running gear (clothes, towel, footwear, socks, shirt, cap, etc). “STREETWEAR” bag is for warm-up equipment that the competitor takes off right before start. All the bags are collected at the transition area before start. The bags can be retrieved also from the transition area right after finishing (please present your race number and athlete wristband). Athletes must pick up their bikes and transition bags by 19:00 on August 7. Material not picked up in time, will be sent to the Lost & Found tent in the Star&Co Village (open August 8, 10:00-15:00). Toilets are in the building of Pühajärve Spa Hotel, next to the transition area and on the bike course in the furthest turnaround point next to the aid station.

Do it like a pro! • Be at the starting area 3 hours before start.

• Check out the start area, water temperature and especially the transition area. • Use your time to talk to the race marshals and organizers and to get answers to all your questions. • Only the organizers of the race and race marshals are allowed to provide physical help to the athletes on the track, therefore think carefully beforehand what you might need on the track (eg. tyres, additional food and drink etc). • The bike maintenance point is located at the Star&Co Village. There will also be a neutral bike service car on the bike course.

NUTRITION & PROVISIONS

• There is one energy station on the bike course, which will be passed in km 33 and 67. The nutrition in the energy station includes: SIS GO Electrolyte sports drink, water, SIS Go bars, bananas, oranges, salt, bread. • You will find 2 energy stations on the run, and you will pass them 4 times on the out-andback course. The energy stations include: SIS GO Electrolyte sports drink, cola, water, SIS GO gels, bananas, oranges, salted cucumber, salt and bread. • In addition there is an energy station in the relaxing zone after the finish line.

BIKE REQUIREMENTS

• All bikes must display the bike frame number. • Riding a mountain bike is allowed in all distances, but the organizers recommend using a road bike. • No tandems, recumbents, fairings or any add-on device designed exclusively to reduce resistance are allowed. • The bike has to have breaks on both wheels, the ends of the handlebars have to have protective caps. • The rear wheel can be a disc wheel. In case of strong winds, the race marshals may disallow the use of disc wheels. In that case the decision will be made public at least 1 hour before the start.

PROTESTS

• Protests can be made against the behaviour of other competitors and against race marshals’ decisions. Protests have to be submitted in writing at most 15 minutes after the finish of the last competitor in your distance. • The protest fee is 500 EEK (32 EUR). • The protest will be discussed by a protest commission. In case the protest is satisfied the protest fee will be returned.

PENALTIES

• In addition to warnings, race marshals can penalise you with 3minutes time penalties. • Time penalty is given max twice during the competition. Any combination of three rule violations will result in a disqualification. In case of time penalty, you will receive a black card, in case of disqualification a red card. • Main reasons for penalties are: the competitor is in contact with his bike without an attached helmet, drafting, distracting other competitors, not passing the course within regulations, not responding to the orders of the race marshals, unsportsmanlike conduct, disregarding the ecozones. • Race marshal will mark the bib of the penalised competitor with a diagonal marker line. On the bike course, the penalised competitor is obliged to stop and have his number marked. • The penalty box (Prison) is located in the transition area. Go there after the bike leg if you have a penalty.
