PR E S IDENT’S MESSAGE Our Library has an impressive history. Now positioned as The Smart Store, where everything is free®, it is poised to begin a new chapter in its institutional life, building on and magnifying its strengths in ways that can profoundly impact and enhance our community. The innovations undertaken during the past year will keep the Library relevant to individuals, businesses, schools and community partners in a world that is rapidly changing.
ST EV EN P I T T M A N President, Library Board of Trustees
Make no mistake – what is best about the Library will endure. As a public library, this includes free and open access for all, an unshakable commitment to intellectual freedom, and a dedication to providing for the unique needs of Stark County. At the same time, the Board will continue to support the Library leadership in making changes that keep the Library’s facilities, collections and services appealing, up-to-date and relevant. This new direction has clearly captured the attention of community leaders, as reflected by the participation in last fall’s ChocoVino fundraiser, sponsored by the Stark County District Library Foundation. The black-tie event hosted at the historic Onesto Hotel honored the Friends of the Library and the Joseph A. Jeffries family. The Board gratefully acknowledges the many ways that the Foundation Board, the event committee and Chairs Ryan and Evrim Fulmer contributed to the success of this event. The Library is an exceptional steward of community resources, providing profound value in very cost-effective ways. The Board looks forward to continuing to guide, support and oversee the work of Library staff, leadership and volunteers in the exciting times to come.
DIR E CTOR’S MESSAGE What an exciting time to lead a public library! 2014 was a year of great motion for the Stark County District Library. In September, we officially launched The Smart Store, where everything is free®. This new way of thinking about the library artfully captures the Library’s special position as a vital and dynamic community institution, and the special responsibility that we feel toward the 240,000 Stark County residents we serve. By reimagining our Library as The Smart Store®, we aim to raise our profile in the community as a valuable and distinctive resource, offering a remarkable variety of activities, materials, services, spaces and technologies to all. T E NA W I LS O N Executive Director
To better serve our valued patrons and increase use of the Library, 2014 heralded another major innovation – the elimination of fines on overdue materials. This – coupled with simplified limits on checked-out items and increasing the number of times items can be renewed – exemplifies our determination to see our resources circulating vigorously throughout the county. While many libraries nationwide are experiencing declining use, we are encouraged to see increases in visits, circulation and program attendance. As we continue to innovate, our efforts are guided by three strategic points of emphasis: • Start Smart – Build a critical foundation for the youngest members of our community with broad offerings that foster early childhood literacy and development. • Stay Smart – Encourage a culture of lifelong learning, engaging the expansive interests of patrons of all ages. • Share Smart – Embrace our unique role in the community as a place for engagement and civic dialogue, and energetically pursue community partnerships that enhance life in Stark County. If you are a regular patron, I thank you and welcome your feedback about how we can serve you better. If it’s been awhile since you visited, I invite you to come see what’s new at one of our 10 branches or many Mobile Library stops. You can also visit us online at the newly revamped StarkLibrary.org: sign up for a Library card, download a movie or digital book, listen to music, or put a book on hold – all while wearing your pajamas!
