7 Ways to

Get in the Game

at the Smart Store

R O

The air is crisp, the leaves are falling and the Friday night lights are calling. If you have football on the brain, you’ll cheer for our exciting lineup. This fall, talk sports with the experts, explore the history of the game and root for the underdog at Stark County District Library.

Huddle up with Speaking of Books Author Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger

Against all odds on a gridiron in South Bend, Indiana, Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger, in twenty-seven seconds, carved his name into history books as perhaps the most famous graduate of the University of Notre Dame. It took years of fierce determination to overcome obstacles and criticisms, yet Rudy achieved his dream—to attend Notre Dame and play football for the Fighting Irish. As fans cheered, he sacked the quarterback in his only play in the only game of his college football career. In 1993, his life story was immortalized with the blockbuster film, RUDY. Rudy kicks off the library’s 2017–18 season of The Dr. Audrey Lavin Speaking of Books Author Series, and his book is this year’s One Book, One Community selection. Listen to his legendary story at the Canton Palace Theatre on October 24th at 6:30 pm.

Participate in One Book One Community

Each year Stark County residents of all ages join together in reading a common book and sharing ideas through community conversation. This year’s book is Rudy: My Story by Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger (see description on page 2). Our young readers’ selection, The Little Linebacker by by Stephen Tulloch and Maria Dismondy, touches on the challenges children face and demonstrates the importance of determination and hard work in overcoming obstacles. This fall, six area libraries join together to host a series of events encouraging Stark County to bring the story to life.

JOIN US THIS FALL for our second season of The Dr. Audrey Lavin Speaking of Books Author Series. In keeping with our mission to Share Smart by fostering community engagement, the Speaking of Books Author Series brings acclaimed writers to Stark County who inspire lively discussion and – at times – challenging conversation while exemplifying literary excellence. For our 2017–2018 season we have four special evenings planned at the Canton Palace Theatre. Each bestselling author will speak about their book, followed by a wide-ranging question and answer session. The evening will end with a book signing and Friends of the Library volunteers will have copies available for purchase if you don’t yet own a copy. JOIN THE CONVERSATION—Discover more and register for these free one-of-a-kind evenings before space runs out at StarkLibrary.org/SpeakingOfBooks.

DANIEL “RUDY” RUETTIGER

Who is Dr. Audrey Lavin?

Daniel “Rudy” Reuttiger defied the odds with 27 seconds of greatness in his story of fierce determination. In 1993, his story was immortalized in the hit movie Rudy. He is also Stark County’s One Book, One Community selection for 2017. 
