Understand the Opiate Epidemic
with Award-Winning Journalist Sam Quinones On April 2nd award-winning journalist Sam Quinones joins us at the Canton Palace Theatre to discuss the opiate epidemic sweeping Ohio and the nation. Quinones is a veteran journalist, storyteller, former LA Times reporter, author of three acclaimed narrative nonfiction books, winner of the Maria Moors Cabot prize and a 1998 recipient of an Alicia Patterson Fellowship.
uring his 10 years as a freelance writer in Mexico, he wrote his first two books, True Tales From Another Mexico: The Lynch Mob, the Popsicle Kings, Chalino and the Bronx as well as Antonio’s Gun and Delfino’s Dream: True Tales of Mexican Migration. It was during this time that he began his investigation in to immigration, drug trafficking, and gangs. Quinones’ latest book, Dreamland: The True Tale of America’s Opiate Epidemic, highlights the rise of black tar heroin and painkiller addiction in the United States and explores how the opiate epidemic is devastating communities. He provides an insider's glimpse into the drug trade with a human perspective. Dreamland shares the tales of addicts and dealers while offering a disturbing look into the realities of drug abuse, addiction and, often times, death.

Quinones’ extensive research on opiates and drug trafficking has made him a leading expert on the growing crisis, and the perfect speaker to raise community awareness on this crisis for our Speaking of Books Author Series. Thanks to the Herbert W. Hoover Foundation grant, Stark County District Library will provide high schools in Stark County with copies of Dreamland to raise awareness of the unprecedented opiate epidemic gripping our community. The Library is also hosting a special event for students on April 2nd to raise awareness among teens about the destructive effects of opiate use.
