Early Literacy at Stark County District Library As The Smart Store®, here at the Library we think a lot about being smart. It’s smart to share resources as a community and it’s smart to develop a culture of lifelong learning. But one of the smartest things we can do is ensure that our young children are prepared for school. That’s why our Start Smart initiative focuses on providing the information and tools that parents, caregivers, and educators need to facilitate early literacy development. And, of course, like everything at the Library, all of these resources are available for free. What is Early Literacy?

Early literacy is the knowledge a child develops about reading and writing before actually learning to read or write. Skills such as holding a book and listening to stories are critically linked to a child’s success in learning to read. With an early introduction to these skills, children have a better chance at succeeding in school, and that success translates into many positive outcomes later in life.
