JULY 2016
STAROOT VACANCIES Department of Health
Editor’s pick of the week:
SECURITY OFFICER Reference Number: REFS-001394 Number of Posts: 1 Centre: Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital Directorate: Logistics Department Salary: R 100 545.per annum (plus benefits)
July is Nelson Mandela Month, a time when people around the world celebrate the life of former President Nelson Mandela by doing small acts of kindness for those who are less fortunate. In 2010, the United Nations General Assembly declared July 18 as the International Nelson Mandela Day to coincide with his birthday. The Mandela Day Campaign message also encourages communities to use 67 minutes of their time to care or support a charity organization or serve in their local community. The 67 minutes represent the number of years the former President fought for human rights and the abolition of apartheid.
Requirements: Grade 10 or 11, grade C PRSIRA certificate with 3 years’ experience as a security officer. Good communication skills (written and verbal), good interpersonal skills. Must be prepared to work shifts, weekends and irregular hours. The applicant must be physically fit and have no criminal record.
Vuk’uzenzele went out on the streets to find out what ordinary South Africans think about this day and how they will be using their 67 minutes to help others, following in the steps of the international icon. Victor Mokaba Nelson Mandela Month is when we take the time to acknowledge and celebrate the legacy that former President Nelson Mandela created to unite South Africans and foster the spirit of Ubuntu in our hearts as South Africans. As a way to do good for others and follow in the steps of the world icon, my friends and I have been running a smallscale donation scheme. We collect clothes, tinned food and blankets from our friends and families and then donate them to charity organisation just before winter begins. At one stage we managed to donate 22 bags full of items that we had collected. We do this throughout the year. Nontobeko Mkhize This day means bringing the rainbow nation together all races. It’s a day to show love and give to those who are less fortunate than us. For Nelson Mandela day I plan to visit the nearby children’s home in my area. Just to lend a hand and assist where I can. I plan to do this on weekends too because it should be Nelson Mandela day every day Christina Mashobane Mandela Day reminds us of the selfless acts of our heroes. People died so we could have the opportunities that we have today. The day reminds us to reflect on how far we have come and strive to give back and work together as a nation to accelerate the strides that have already been made. Mandela Day represents a day when we forget about ourselves for more than hour and help those less fortunate. It is a day to be grateful and strive to give, not always in monetary terms but with time, with kindness and gratitude every single day. I will be volunteering at an Old Age home as we tend to forget about the elderly. Yadhana Jadoo Every now and again greatness in a human being graces the earth. These are people
who impart their wisdom so that the human race can carry on living without hate or ego. That is Mandela for me. A human being we should all learn from. Cecilia Haak While it is great that we have “Mandela Day” every year, I believe we should be giving back to society every day. Every day should be “Mandela Day”, not just 18 July. Annelie Vermeulen Mandela Day asked us to give just 67 minutes of our time to serve others - 1 minute for each of the 67 years Madiba spent serving all South Africans to make our country a better place. We should be doing more. Thabo Moeng Mandela Day to me renews the inspiration I get from what he has achieved as a person and a selfless leader. It is a day I strive to copy what Tata did and contribute to bringing change to the people and the beautiful country we live in. Written by Noluthando Mkhize

“BORN FREES” Exactly what are we saying or trying to define by born frees? I have heard people speak about the lost generation of born frees. This is young people born at the dawn of democratic dispensation who were filled with optimism about a myth of Rainbow Nation that never was. What about this generation that has the mission of freeing the people from those chains of race, unemployment ,poverty ,drugs, teenage pregnancy ,university fees increase ,politics, formal education system that gives them a living rather than fortunes. What about us is a reflective of born frees generation born during the struggle for economic freedom and the quest for the realization of the objective of African Renaissance .This is a generation that yearns for its country’s history were past generation was militant and united for change to mark a turning point in South Africa’s history .Therefore, this generation tries to understand where it comes from and how to walk on the foot-steps of their predecessor but the struggle is complex and the lack of heroes and she roes are rare to find and steer the ship in the right direction .These days there are platforms to voice out opinions and concerns of this last generation to be taken seriously and be heard, the after implement their so believed ideas to create brighter future they years for. It is understood that the new black elites merely replaced the former white colonial elites, However, if the next 21 years into democracy political and economical landscape remains unchanged ,the fate of the lost generation or so called born frees is doomed and have nothing to tell to the fourth generation to be born. We have just celebrated the 40th year of Soweto uprising but the celebrations was also to illustrates that the role young people played in 1976 was not only about liberating education and do away with the system of apartheid but also ensuring the Youth contribute to a new SOUTH AFRICA. The 40th years means must encourage –engagement, we must encourage young people to speak –out in fact, the more they speak, the more they engage and in this way there will feel they are part of the transforming process,. Some people believe that Youth of today still have the same struggles as the Youth 1976 but others have different opinions that perhaps Youth of today do things differently but they are continuing with the struggles that the Youth of yesterday were pursing. The main concern regarding young people in South Africa today is jobs; second key issue is access to education and thirdly is for young people to create their own businesses and became entrepreneurs. In the next 40 year ,this Born Frees generation should write their own history have their own heroes who self-less and understand the different between the old and new struggles and embrace their identity in diversity through Rainbow Nation that is just a myth. As many questions have been asked about what needs to be done to drive economy and create employment, one consistent answer is entrepreneurship is the engine that drives economic growth and job creation remembering that South Africa is a nation that is affected by self doubt when it comes to business as only 45.4 believes that they have what it takes to start and run a business. Youth mind set should be shifted to see possibilities and self-believe.

STAROOT FINANCES *the science of money management*
FINANCES How You Should Market Your Business Online.
• Business
Here are 7 elements to consider when trying to reach your target audience online.
• Banks
If you own a business, chances are you’ve thought about how you’ll market the product or service you’re selling to your potential customers. But while a traditional marketing strategy is necessary, these days online marketing is becoming an essential part of the marketing mix too.
• Education
1. Know who your online target market is The firs step in marketing your business online is to know exactly who you’re selling to and where you’ll find them online. Are your potential customers young and tech-savvy, interacting on social media and buying products on their mobile devices? Or are they a more conservative bunch who like to read product reviews online before making a buying decision? Knowing exactly who your potential online customer is helps you uncover their core need that may differ slightly from your offline customers. It also helps you tailor your messaging so you reach them more effectively on the online platforms they’re using.

2. Build your database With strict privacy and anti-spam laws now in effect in South Africa, it’s important to have permission from your potential customers to market to them online. Whenever you make a sale or engage in a conversation with a potential customer, get their permission to keep their details so you can communicate with them in future. Once you have a list of these prospects and/or past customers, you can send them targeted marketing in the form of email newsletters or targeted SMS messages. 3. Add value online Marketing online successfully is much more about engagement and adding value than about the hard sell – if your product is as good as you think it is, you won’t need to push this. To add value, decide how you can make your customers’ lives better online: Maybe you can provide expert advice, or provide resources for them to read and use in future? Or, maybe you can entertain them or provide a convenient tool or service? Once you develop a reputation for being a useful resource, your customers are more likely to trust you and become customers that keep returning. 4. Create good content A key way to add value online is to create good content. This can be in several forms: Useful, well-researched articles, or a blog post that touches on key issues in your industry, or even a competition to win a product giveaway, cash or an experience. We-recommend-tickWe recommend: How The Marketer Sells Christmas For Online Stores Good content begs to be shared, and the more your content is read online by others, the more your brand will gather momentum and the more people will be open to buying what it is you’re offering. When you do create good content, make sure that it’s search engine friendly and that you have a good social networking structure in place to help seed it. 5. Design a newsletter strategy digital-strategy As long as you’re writing good content as per the previous point, you may as well leverage what you’re publishing even further – a regular email newsletter is an excellent way of doing this. Successful email newsletters are well written with lots of (but not too much) relevant and unique content that’s specifically targeted to its readers. They also push products and services, but be careful to tread the middle ground between selling and adding value. Generally it’s best to send out a newsletter about twice a month, and there are a host of free tools (such as Constant Contact or Mailchimp) that you can use to create an attractive HTML newsletter that won’t trip your recipient’s spam filters. 6. Choose a social media channel that suits you Social media is the buzzword on everyone’s lips, but it’s not a magic bullet and not every channel will work for your business. Just because you have a Facebook page and advertising campaign, a company LinkedIn page and a Twitter account doesn’t mean potential customers will come running. 7. Get visible on search results Search is one of the only platforms where your target audience is actively asking to be marketed to, so it’s worthwhile making sure you’re visible on search results pages for the queries they’re typing in to Google. You have two broad options when it comes to marketing your business on search engines: Paid search, where you pay for your ads to appear on search results via Google’s Adwords platform, or search engine optimisation, where you make changes to your site so that you appear on Google’s natural (unpaid) search results. The above points are just a start, because the ways to market your business online are vast, as are the different tools you can use. No business these days should be without an online marketing strategy though, so get involved in creating one yourself, or hire an expert so you can formulate a plan that will drive your company forward.
