STAROOT ARTICLES Editor’s pick of the week: South Africa commemorates Women’s Month in August as a tribute to the thousands of women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 in protest against the extension of Pass Laws to women. This historic march was a turning point in the role of women in the struggle for freedom and society at large. Since that eventful day, women from all walks of life became equal partners in the struggle for a non-racial and nonsexist South Africa. The march was coordinated by the Federation of South African Women (Fedsaw) led by four women: Lillian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph, Rahima Moosa and Sophia Williams De Bruyn. These leaders delivered petitions to the then Prime Minister JG Strijdom’s office at the Union Buildings. Women throughout the country had put their names to these petitions, indicating their anger and frustration at having their freedom of movement restricted by the hated official passes. The Government of South Africa declared August Women’s Month and 9 August is celebrated annually as Women’s Day. Women’s Month is a tribute not only to the thousands of women who marched on that day in 1956, but also a tribute to the pioneers of the women’s movement in this country, dating back to 1913, when women like Charlotte Maxeke led the way in establishing the ANC Women’s League and encouraging women to engage in the struggle for freedom. Pioneers include Cissy, Jaynab and Amina honouring and celebrating the girls of 1976 and recognise Gool, who were amongst the leaders of the National Lib- the role played by young women in the liberation struggle uniting South African women eration League and the Non-European United Front of the celebrating the struggles of the women over the decades 1930s. and a rejuvenation of our commitment to strive for a sociThe names of Ray Alexander Simons, Elizabeth Mafikeng ety that is truly non-racial, non-sexist, united, democratic and Elizabeth Abrahams will always be associated with and free of all forms of discrimination remembering the history of Women’s struggle in South the struggles of women. Women’s Month also serves to recall and recognise the work of Dora Tamana, Winifred Siqwana, Ida Mntwana, Bertha Gxowa, Florence Matomela and other stalwarts of the 1950s, who led militant women’s formation for the rights of workers and the rights of women. There were also the women who formed the Black Sash and who were the first to protest against the disenfranchisement of the Coloured voters during the 1950s. Coloured voters played an important role in the united front of anti-apartheid forces that developed in the last three decades of apartheid. Government has made significant progress in empowering women in the political, public and educational spheres, but the marginalisation of poor women severely compromises progress. The 2016 Women’s Month is a build-up towards the 60th Anniversary of the Women’s march and is aimed at: educating the nation about the role women played in the emancipation of the continent documenting the correct stories of heroines of South Africa celebrating women who have made it in all spheres of life in the continent

STAROOT JOURNAL KASIE BIZ PROFILE Sibusiso Makamole is the author of a book called Sibusiso – The player that got played. Can you tell us more about your book? The book follows the life of Sibusiso who is a player, he first cheated on his girlfriend with her best friend and when the best friend got pregnant Sibusiso didn’t want to take responsibility. He continued to complicate other people’s lives because he didn’t know what he wanted except sleeping with every girl that he meets, when he finally finds the girl that he loves he gets to taste his own medicine when the girl cheats on him. What inspired you to write the book? I wanted to help everyone understand the life of a player more especially girls, a player will say all the good things that you want to hear so that he can get what he wants from you. Not everyone that says ‘I love you’ actually means it. Are you a player? No I am not even but I have broken a few hearts in the past Is this your first book and are you planning on writing more books? Yes I am, this book was just the start Before you started writing what were you doing? I used to be a car sales person in Heidelberg until I had a car accident on the 1st of August 2015 and after getting out of that mangled car I decided to start living my life. What do you mean to live your life? We all have dreams and things that we want to accomplish but we are soon dragged into this thing called ‘the system’. Once we are dragged in the system we forget all our dreams What advice can you give you aspiring authors? Don’t let anyone tell you that your work is not good enough, after writing your book read it twice and ask yourself if you would buy your own book. It’s hard to get a publisher that will market and sell your book for you so you need to be prepared to be self-published, that means wherever you go you will need to carry your book with and sell it to everyone. Its success will depend on you Where can people get your book? The book is currently sold at a book kiosk in front of Pick n Pay at Maponya mall and for everyone outside Soweto they can order by calling or via WhatsApp on 078 7511 885. The book is also available in Kathorus call or via WhatsApp Mthobisi call 079 5754 389 By: Staroot Journal

IS SOUTH AFRICA READY FOR WOMAN PRESIDENT?
T
here is popular say in South Africa that says There are more of us woman than men, why not lead South Africa? In August we celebrate woman’s month as we will ANCWL hold Conference and Bathabile Dlamini as their new President? I think the real question is whether the ANC is ready to choose a candidates for premier, they almost always choose a man until that change the ANC will not elect a woman President. However, woman within ANC should continue to press on this issue but the signs are that they won’t win this time. I do not see why available woman candidates cannot be entrusted-if Dlamini Zuma is good enough to run the AU, she is good enough to run the country. Issues have raised to expose the lack of leadership among woman despite their success such as President Jacob Zumas rape trial were we saw poor woman been seen as a victim. Another case of late is of Oscar Pristoriuos murdered her girlfriend and the Steenkamp family would not get the justice they deserve.
