STAROOT ARTICLES Editor’s pick of the week: Kay Vittee, an expert on human resources, sets out the main choices for matriculants. Following 12 long years of schooling, for the class of 2014, it’s finally all wrapped up – but, what now?

Although some students decide on their “dream career” at a very young age, many may not know what options may not be paid much – or at all – you will gain valuable are available to them and where they would best fit in work experience to add to your CV, learn valuable skills the South African workforce. from more senior employees, and may even be offered a full time position with the company. The questions that needs to be asked is “Do you, as a matric student, know what your options are? What are Remember – no matter your circumstances – with a little you going to do now that you have left school?” determination, there is a world of opportunity open to you. We wish the class of 2014 the very best of luck. Having recently completed matric exams, students’ options depend on a number of factors including whether matricYou’ve hit the crossroads in life between school or not they have passed, the results they have achieved and the real world. So what’s next? Kay Vittee, a human and their financial situation, as well as their personal in- resources expert, sets out the main choices after you terests, strengths and abilities. have completed matric. Above all, she says, with a little bit of determination, there is a Bear in mind that universities, technikons and Further world of opportunity open to you. Education and Training (FET) colleges are very different and offer a variety of study choices. Your choice of institution should depend on your individual interests, needs and abilities. Universities offer formal, academic learning for fields like the arts, medicine, law, education, commerce and engineering for example, while a Technikons focus on technically inclined degrees like business management or computer studies. A Public FET college may be more suitable for those wanting to enter a specific trade like hairdressing or mechanics. An important factor to keep in mind, when deciding on a certificate, diploma or degree, is the market need for the skills specific to that qualification. After identifying where your interests and strengths lie, do some research as to what job opportunities align with your interests. Then, it would be advisable to research which of these jobs are needed by the job market and will guarantee you a better chance of finding a job once qualified. For those who are less fortunate and do not have the option of formal tertiary education available to them, either because of inadequate marks or finances, there are still a number of ways for them to improve their skills, increase their employability and even get a qualification. One of these options is to apply for a skills or learnership programme with one of the 21 Sector Education and Training Authorities (Seta). These institutions aim to develop and improve the skills of South Africans by placing and training them in a specific sector. Like choosing a University, college, or qualification, when choosing which Seta to apply to, be sure to consider your interests so that you can match them to a relevant Seta, for example, if you have banking related interests, contact Bankseta for a possible learnership. Another option is to gain practical workplace experience in a field that interests you, whether it be through an in- http://www.biznews.com/thought-leaders/2015/01/06/lifematric-whats-next/ ternship, learnership or as a volunteer. My childhood I spent it at a community center named Noah’s ark, it was the only place that kept us busy. We were protected from all the negative stuff, we were saved from things like drugs, gangsterism and other wicked stuff in the townships we call the ghetto. If I were to explain according to my understanding we were built not destroyed.

We all know that time never waits for no man. I started my radio career at Kasie FM were I was doing When I was doing grade seven I was intromidnight slot on weekends. In 2014 I went to EK FM in duced to the sub-culture of hip hop. It is where Tsakane it’s were aim now. 5 must-see African films at the Joburg Film Festival

Lamb by Yared Zeleke (Ethiopia) This feel-good film is about a boy named Ephraim and his relationship with his pet lamb called Chuni. Following the death of his mother, Ephraim is sent away to live with his relatives. He spends his time learning some cooking skills (which displeases his uncle) and chilling with Chuni. His uncle then threatens to slaughter the lamb, which leads to Ephraim hatching a plan for them to escape. Yared Zeleke’s debut feature film’s use of beautiful landscapes, non-professional actors and a simple story were enough to make us want to see Ephraim win.

T

he Joburg Film Festival starts this Friday and will be on until November 5. Up to 60 films will be screened at 20 different venues across Jozi and Soweto, so it’s also a great way for you to see the city. Here are 5 films from across the continent that you should definitely check out: Vaya by Akin Omotoso (South Africa) Vaya follows the lives of three characters we meet on a train that is travelling from Kwazulu Natal to Joburg. The film is set mostly in the city and parts of Soweto and is directed by Nigerian director, Akin Omotoso. The film’s three main characters Nkulu (Sibusiso Msimang), Nhlanhla (Sihle Xaba) and Zanele (Zimkhitha Nyoka) do not know each other but their lives cross paths, in interesting ways, as they move through the city. The Wedding Party by Kemi Adetiba (Nigeria) This romantic comedy is from Nigerian filmmaker Kemi Adetiba. The story follows a couple that is about to get married and how they go about bringing their two families together. The Wedding Party’s cast includes popular Nigerian performers like Banky W and Adesua Etomi. If you’ve never been to a Nigerian wedding, you might want to after watching this because the wardrobe is fantastic and you will find yourself laughing throughout too.

The Pearl of Africa by Jonny von Wallström (Uganda) This doccie captures the story of the Ugandan activist Cleopatra Kambugu and her soft-spoken husband Nelson. Cleopatra came to be known for sharing her story of living in Uganda as a transgender woman under the life-threatening conditions of living in a country with harsh anti-LGBTQIA legislation and stigma. The film captures her hardships as well as the heart-warming triumphs she made after making very difficult decisions for her own survival. The Pearl of Africa is ultimately a love story that needed to be told and is done so with great care. Hatchet Hour by Judy Naidoo (South Africa) Hatchet Hour dives into the life of criminal defence lawyer, Isabelle Sudlow. Isabelle drags her childhood best friend, Jade, into covering up a murder. Then we basically follow the plot of the story to see what happens next. Judy Naidoo brings together this bold story with a variety of new as well as familiar faces (such as Petronella Tshuma (from e.tv soapie Scandal!). by: Lebohang Ntoele http://livemag.co.za/featured/5-must-see-films-at-theupcoming-joburg-film-festival/

available. Pay your bills online and ask for your statements to be emailed to you. You pay for statements that are mailed to you in the post so an emailed statement will cut this cost.

Times are tough and even though the inflation rate might be slowing down, prices are still going up. This means your cost of living is only going to increase as the months go by. “The higher monthly average trend is likely to continue, in line with the anticipated public sector wage increases,” says Mike Schüssler, chief economist at economists.co.za. The BDSI median salary shows that 50% of individuals with monthly take-home salaries paid into their bank accounts took home at least R9 679 in May. “This typical take-home salary grew below inflation for the second time this year, reflecting that the lower inflation rate of 2015 is having an impact on the typical take-home pay, as present inflation is far higher than the 4.6% average seen last year,” explains Schüssler. This means that while your salary may have increased on an annual basis, it is just barely enough to meet the rising cost of living or the rate at which inflation is growing. “The average take-home pay increased by 24.3% over that period despite medical insurance and tax rates increasing far above that rate. The median take-home pay increased by 25.9%,” says Dr Caroline Belrose, head of knowledge and risk services at BankservAfrica. Inflation increased by 25.1% indicating that generally take-home pay increased more or less in line with inflation.

Savings tips

We rounded up a few savvy tips to help you stretch your salary: Shopping Never go grocery shopping on an empty stomach. You will be tempted to buy things you would not normally buy. Also, make sure you have a list before you hit the stores ….and stick to it. If you are not very disciplined, online shopping removes a great deal of temptation. Buy in bulk and save on costs. Goods such as detergents and household cleaning items last long and can easily be bought in bulk if you have the storage space

Be aware of where you shop. Keep an eye out for specials. Sometimes the extra trip to get to a different shop is worth the effort. Avoid “convenience stores” because they are usually about 30% more expensive! Plan your meals around the specials at your local grocery store and include in-season fruit and vegetables. If you belong to loyalty schemes, save up all the discounts or points you accumulate over the year and use them in December. Lifestyle Adopt a healthier diet and watch your grocery bill shrink. If you eat less meat and drink less alcohol, that will be a massive saving on its own. Pack your own lunch instead of buying take-aways every day. Take this one step further and eat in every night instead of eating out. If you want to spend time with friends, take turns hosting dinner parties at home. It will be much cheaper than going to a restaurant. Or host a movie night at home instead of going to the cinema. Instead of buying gifts, take the time to make something personal for your friends and family. Cancel your gym membership and take up a hobby such as cycling. You could start walking the dog regularly or go for hikes. Make food from scratch. For example, if you bake your own bread, this can cost you as little as R70 a month compared to buying a loaf of bread regularly, which can cost as much as R120 a month or more. Buy secondhand clothes. You would be surprised at the amazing bargains you can pick up and the incredible quality of the clothes available at secondhand stores. Vintage clothing can be quite cool too and you can be sure no one else will be wearing the same thing. Your children are only going to use their school uniforms for a limited time so take advantage of the secondhand shop at their schools. These are all simple changes you can adopt over time, which will eventually add up to a whole lot of saving. Whatever saving tips you choose to implement, make sure it becomes a habit – and watch the money in your bank account grow. http://mayaonmoney.co.za/2016/08/how-to-stretchyour-salary/
