History, heritage and culture This year marks the 45th Africa Day, which has been observed annually since 1963 on 25 May. It commemorates the establishment of the African Union (AU), and the former Organisation of African Unity. Africa Day was initiated as a platform to acknowledge and celebrate Africa’s history, heritage and culture. Organisers of festivities have confirmed that African literature will form part of the weekend’s celebrations. There will be a Soweto

STAROOT JOURNAL KASIE BIZ PROFILE Attention Black Entrepreneurs: Start-Up Funding From Government Grants & Funds. Government grants and funding are a great source of finances when you’re trying to get your business off the ground or expand to new horizons.

A small business can on average employ 12 people. The drop in entrepreneurial activity over the past five years is equal to 2.3 million possible job opportunities lost. Small and micro business sectors are the main source of real employment in the economy. South Africa’s economy needs to inspire entrepreneurship in order for it to grow. By creating an environment that is friendlier to small businesses and actively encouraging the sector, the country is in a better position to create jobs. Two simple measures that would go a long way to support and develop entrepreneurs is access to finance and improvement of logistics. Content in this guide

National Empowerment Fund (NEF)

The government created government funding to extend finances to previously disadvantaged South African’s in order to develop black economic development. Your much needed capital investment could come from government funding opportunities. Financing a small business, whether you’re starting-up or trying to expand, is a challenge all entrepreneurs go through. Here are a few examples of government funding that focuses on black entrepreneurs: National Empowerment Fund (NEF) The NEF is, a part of the government’s development mandate to encourage black participation in business and entrepreneurship. It helps to assist black entrepreneurs in achieving funding. This fund aims to assist black youth, women and men, communities and businesses to achieve sustainable success. Types of NEF Funding The NEF has four main channels of funding that consist of subdivisions. These are: 1. iMbewu Fund: • This consists of subdivision is entrepreneur finance, procurement finance and franchise finance. • This fund supports black entrepreneurs who are starting up a new business or expanding an existing one. • This contribution takes the form of offering debt counselling, quasi-equity and equity finance products. • The funds contribution ranges from R250 000 to a maximum of R10 million 2. uMnotho Fund: • This NEF funding has subdivisions in finance, new venture finance, expansion capital, capital markets, and liquidity and warehousing. • This fund is available to black entrepreneurs who manage or own businesses, new ventures, expanding existing business. It is also available to black entrepreneurs who want to buy a share of equity in black and white owned businesses. • The contributions from this fund range from R2 million to R75 million. 3. Rural and Community Development Fund: • This NEF fund has subdivisions in acquisition, new venture capital, expansion capital and start-up/green categories. • The creation of this government fund is to promote sustainable change in social and economic relations along with supporting and developing the rural economy by financing sustainable enterprises and co-operatives. • This NEF funding ranges from R1 million to R50 million. 4. Top 5 Exercise Programs for Women

• Fashion • Cars • Cribs • Entertainment • Shopping • Art • Music paylists • Foods • Photos • Make-up/Skin Products • Exercise/Diet

I have weight issues! I unfortunately missed the train when it was handing out fast metabolisms. And, after having children, it isn’t much better and with having even less opportunity to work out, I have had to go searching for ways of getting exercise in during the day. And, this isn’t an easy feat! I think there are very few magazines that don’t have at least one mention or article about the importance of eating well and doing exercise, so we hear it all the time. Often, knowing something doesn’t mean you will actually go ahead and DO IT! And, exercise is NOT exception – I know exercise will help me lose weight, I know exercise will make me have more energy and I know that exercise will give me more energy ….. that doesn’t mean I will do it! I’ve always been someone that exercises, BUT my major flaw is that I give up when I get bored or tired or demotivated (don’t see results). EXERCISE is my weakness – I will give this up so quickly because I find it really difficult. I have done triathlons, programs and Sports Science Institutes, diet programs, running programs – you name it, I’ve probably done it, but haven’t STUCK to it after completing it or if something makes it a little more challenging! If you’re a MOM looking to exercise, lose weight, get your heart rate up, get your energy up and start looking great, here are some exercise programs that I know I can recommend AND most importantly – you can do from home! I’ve given you my input on each! I re-started this one this morning actually. I got 4 weeks into it just over a month ago and then got nailed with this awful flu that has been going around. So, I’m back into it again. Ladies, this is a VERY challenging 8 week DVD program by Shaun T. It’s REALLY TOUGH, but it does have EXCELLENT RESULTS and reviews. You will find yourself cursing and if not, close to it! I recommend this one if you love cardio and are prepared to take 40 minutes each day for exercise. There are LOADS of videos on YouTube showing results Final Comments I hope this helps you a bit if you are looking for some inspiration to lose weight or do something in the health department. How to Write a Funding Proposal Knowing how to write a funding proposal properly can make or break your business idea before it even gets off the ground. It is important to know how to write a funding proposal as this is your chance to convince potential funders that your business is run efficiently, that it is accountable and that it can achieve the objectives it sets. How to write a funding proposal that will have impact Before you begin to write your funding proposal, you need to do planning and research.

• Budgets • Real Estate • Career • Innovation • Economy • Stokvels • Loans

To Advertise on Staroot Journal

You must be clear on the following: • Know the requirements of the funder who will receive the proposal. • Find a funder who has similar agenda to yours. • What need is being met by the product or solution your business offers? • What is the product or solution offered by your business? • How does your product or solution meet the need defined above? • How much will it cost to get your business idea off the ground?

“To all type of business Funding proposal must-haves to settles that dial”

Follow these hints on how to write a funding proposal • Be structured. If your proposal is well-thought out and ordered, it says a great deal about how you’ll run your business. The converse is also true. • Be persuasive. The aim of writing a funding proposal is to get someone to agree to give you money. • Be technically detailed and correct. This means you have to have done your homework. • Be brief and to the point. Convey the required information in a concise manner. Funding proposal must-haves Your proposal needs to include: A summary will provide an overview of the project. It must identify the challenge that your business wishes to address, how you plan to address it, why you want to address it, how long it will take and how much it will cost. The introduction gives an overview of your business that includes what your company is called, where it is based, what it does and who it employs. Include your vision and mission statement and company goals. Provide detailed background information about the business that shows it is a good risk for the funder. It also provides information about the environment that your business operates in, including the market that it addresses. Here you can include a SWOT analysis of your company. Project details describe exactly how your business plans to reach its goals. Be clear about your objectives and what it will take to reach them. Also list your resources, including staff and technology, that will help you achieve your goals. It’s also important to include how you will measure your progress. Give the relevant figures and refer to the supporting documents where required. The conclusion will explain how the funds will be used and accounted for. Include the main budget items and once again, refer to supporting documents for more detail. The budget is the financial plan that will control the allocation of funds. You need to research your costs to work out your budget, remembering to allow for contingencies. Supporting documents and materials can include anything that may help the funder reach a decision. These can include financial information, legal documents and any other information about your company that you think will be relevant.
