STAROOT JOURNAL KASIE ARTIST PROFILING

No space for performing art in Townships.

I

n the small township called Tsakane in the east rand we meet a group of young people who calls themselves twinplug. They have come together to form a nonprofit organisation which teaches teenagers performing art. They work hand in hand the high schools HOD of art and culture. When asked what had made them to start an NPO Sboniso Sibiya the chairman said “we saw a gap in the community where young people are passionate about drama yet the was no one who was willing to guide and point them in the right direction”, Derrick Mathebula the secretary added “ most young people love to dance and copy what the famous actor/actress did on a popular sopie/movies. So this was perfect for them because it was a platform where they could show their how good they are”. While we where busy chatting a group of teenagers wearing different school uniform walked in, It was time for rehearsals that, That’s when I got the opportunity to chat with the two executives of the NPO. Bellow are the questions and answers: When asked where do they do their rehearsal?. Sboniso said “ at the moment we rehears at the back of my house because we can’t afford rent at the main hall and we don’t have a piece of land to put a structure on so that we can rehears”. I asked the teenagers how it feels like doing performing art. They said “ we would never chose anything else because this is our passion we want to make our parents and community proud with thus performing art. When I asked the two executive members what challenges do they come a cross? Derrick said “ we find it had at time to rehearse during weekends because some parents refuse to allow their children to come to rehearsals and another challenge is rehearsing during rain season and dust season because we rehearse outside so during the rainy days we yell the teenagers to not come and during dust days we do try to rehearse but we finish looking like ghosts”. When ask how they think they can be helped ? the two members said they would love to ask the high profile business people of Tsakane to assist them in getting a small piece of land that they can put a structure on to rehearse. Sboniso added “we are working for the community surely everyone can see the change we making and they are welcome to see us rehears. They just need to help us make this performing art organisation sustainable and there for future generations”. The passion in these young peoples eyes is clear you can see that they are doing what they like more than anything. Our former president once said “ It is not what we are given but what we have that separate us from one another”, this clears fits well with what the twinplug organisation is doing . If the is anyone who would like visit or assist these young people they can call Sboniso Sibiya on 0787124709. - Story by: Nomvuyo Sebeko

Ford’s announcement that the 2017 Focus Electric will sport an EPA-rated driving range of 100 miles couldn’t have come at a less opportune time: Here we are driving and testing a ’16 model with a range of 76 miles when, in only a few months, it will be obsolete. Old kit. An iPhone 4 in an iPhone 6S world. If we were seriously considering the purchase of any electric, it would seem worth waiting for the ’17 Focus to arrive because we’d either get a third more range with the new one or a screaming deal on a leftover ’16 model. (We’d also get a chance to comparison shop the Focus against the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt and its claimed 200-mile range.) That said, a range of 76 miles is enough for most commutes. (That we all use cars for more than just commuting explains why low-range EVs, such as the Focus, sell in minuscule volumes, but we digress). This author’s commute is just over 22 miles each way, including 15 miles of 70-mph highway. No home-to-office round trip was attempted without charging in the middle, however. One night, the Focus estimated the remaining range to be 22 miles when we got home (we made one stop between the office and home), so that’s nowhere near 76 miles, but also well within the comfort zone. Overnight, the Focus soaked up about 12 kWh of electricity, enough juice to provide a worry-free trip back to work. Such is the reality of driving an EV in a world with an infrastructural focus—no pun intended—on hydrocarbons. Aerodynamic drag grows exponentially, so as soon as any electric vehicle hits freeway speed the driver can watch the projected range drop faster than the miles pass by. Likewise, a few bursts of maximum acceleration will put an outsize dent in the remaining distance available to travel. All electrics—all cars, actually—are like this; Ford’s isn’t unique. The only difference with this Focus is that the conventional version’s 12-gallon gas tank stores more than 17 times the energy that can be packed into the Focus Electric’s 23.0-kWh lithium-ion battery. Feather-foot the accelerator and cap your speed at 55 mph, and the full EPA range might be within reach. Ford says a fully drained battery can be recharged in 3.6 hours at 240 volts, or 20 hours using common household 120-volt circuitry. - http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/2016-ford-focus-electric-test-review

STAROOT FINANCES *a science of money management*

FINANCES Loan Sharks: Who are they and how do • Business

they work?

• Banks • Education • Money tips • Invest • Budgets • Real Estate

M

• Innovation

any people are unable to pay back the loans due to difficult situations they live in. This is the moment loan sharks take advantage of people in precarious situations, unscrupulously offering loans which will be very difficult to repay – often at triple digit interest rates. Once a loan is issued borrowers find themselves plunged into an infernal spiral of debt. One aspect that only makes things worse in South Africa is the poor financial literacy - in fact, a recent study has shown that South Africa only scores 54/100 in financial literacy.

• Economy

Loan Sharks can be sorted into two main categories: legal lenders and illegal lenders. Let’s have a closer look.

• Stockfels

• loan shark • Legal Lenders • Payday Lenders:

• Career

• Loans

Loan Sharks mostly largely targeting disadvantage communities

If you just need a little bit of cash before your pay day arrives, a fast and easy Payday loan seems like the ideal solution. However, like most things that seem too good to be true, it definitely is. The unbelievably high interest rates (sometime four digit numbers) and terms rarely longer than 30 days makes it very difficult for borrowers to pay back their loan on time. Pawn shops:

To Advertise on Staroot Journal

Call 081 4967 506

Pawnbrokers offer secured loans to people by using their personal possessions (e.g. television, jewelry, etc.) as collateral. If the loan is defaulted, the pawnbroker has the right to keep the possession and sell it. Defaults are not even reported, so the credit score stays untouched. The interests being very high, you risk losing your dear possessions. Car titles: These work very similarly to pawn loans, in this case your car is used as a collateral, once you have signed, you hand over your keys as well as the title of your car . The loan often comes with many hidden costs such as storage and repossession fees. Risking losing your car for a cash-in-hand loan is probably not a very smart move. Illegal Lenders Gangsters, sometime even acquaintances, these people are money-greedy, trying to profit from the destitute. Although they have no right to lend money with interests, they impose astronomical interest rates to borrowers in despair. Loan sharks are known to often use violence and blackmail to get their clients to pay up some cases of murder have been reported, they have been linked with organized crime all over the world. These are the most dangerous sharks in the sea, with the absence of legal boundaries, not only your credit score is at risk. Whenever it is possible, it is preferable to take out a long or middle term loan rather than an immediate cash payday loan. Even for emergencies there are often better alternatives, such as asking your employer for an advance, borrowing from a friend or a family member or looking for emergency assistance programs. A good idea is to keep an emergency fund to avoid getting into these situations. If you are not in a desperate situation yet, don’t wait until it’s too late to put some money aside. Most importantly, do not take hasty, impulsive decisions and whatever happens, never turn to an illegal loan shark no matter how desperate you are. https://www.lendico.co.za/blog/loan-sharks-153.html
