Sen. Judith Zaffirini Receives Distinguished Advocacy San Isidro ISD Board of Trustees Award for Championing Lifesaving Cancer Public Policy names lone finalist for Superintendent

Award is One of the Highest Honors Presented by the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network for Legislative Leadership on Lifesaving Bill Sen. Judith Zaffirini (SD-21) received the Advocacy in Action award recently, one of the most prestigious awards presented by

the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), in recognition of her significant contributions to the fight against cancer in Texas, including her leadership this past session in authoring legislation that makes it more affordable for Texans to receive their lifesaving colorectal cancer screenings. ACS CAN, the advocacy affiliate of the American Cancer Society, presents the annual award to select lawmakers who demonstrate outstanding leadership in cancer-

related public policy. “Sen. Zaffirini has established herself as a true advocate for cancer patients and their families by championing legislation that is expected to save thousands of lives across the state for one of the most preventable cancers,” said James Gray, Texas Government Relations Director at ACS CAN. “On behalf of all Texas families touched by cancer, we’re so grateful for her steadfast leadership that resulted in a historic measure that eliminated a major barrier that has impeded access to preventive screenings and looks forward to the impact of such a lifesaving law.” Colorectal cancer screening rates have been dangerously low across the state even prior to the pandemic and incidence rates have SEN. The San Isidro Independent School District Board of Trustees, at its April 18, 2022 special meeting, unanimously named Sara A. Alvarado as lone finalist for superintendent. By state law, the Board must wait 21 days before voting to hire Alvarado as the new superintendent for San Isidro ISD. Alvarado is slated to replace retiring Superintendent Mario

Alvarado. Board President Velinda Reyes stated, “We are excited to announce Sara Alvarado as San Isidro’s lone finalist and we are confident that her 28 years of experience and her passion for education will elevate the academic rigor and expand programs in our district with student success in mind. She connects with our unique community and student culture and thinks locally and globally in terms of educating our kids.” The Board followed a lengthy process in determining the lone finalist. In November, the Board retained the services of the Texas Association of School Boards Executive Search Services to assist in the search. The Board surveyed and held forums with staff, student, and community groups in March to

discuss desired leadership qualities of the new Superintendent. The profile developed from these meetings was the measure used in evaluating the applicants for the position. The Board is scheduled to vote to hire Alvarado on May 10th. When hired, she will be the first female superintendent in the district’s history. Alvarado currently serves as Assistant Superintendent of Academic Services for San Benito CISD. “It is with much excitement that I return to San Isidro ISD as the Superintendent of Schools,” Alvarado stated. “I will work tirelessly to maintain the successes and traditions of San Isidro ISD and ensure that the priority and focus will be exceptional educational SAN ISIDRO ISD, page 8

RIO GRANDE CITY GRULLA ISD to Honor their own School Lunch Heroes

Between preparing healthy meals, adhering to strict and often complex nutrition standards, meeting age/grade group meal patterns, navigating students’ medically prescribed diets, and balancing so much more, the school nutrition staff at RGCGISD offers service with a smile. To celebrate their hard work and commitment, schools will celebrate School Lunch Hero Day on Friday, May 6. This day, celebrated annually since 2013, was designated by The School Nutrition Association and Jarrett Krosoczka, author of the “Lunch Lady” graphic novel series. School Lunch Hero Day provides an opportunity for parents, students, school staff, and communities to thank those who provide healthy meals to nearly 30 million of America’s students each school day. “School nutrition employees must balance many roles and follow numerous federal, state, and local regulations to ensure safe and healthy meals are available in schools. School Lunch Hero Day provides the opportunity for the community

to thank these hardworking heroes” said Patsy Ramirez, RDN, LD, Program Director. Today’s federal nutrition standards ensure that school meal programs always offer low-fat or fat-free milk, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein. School meals must also meet limits on calories, sodium, and unhealthy fats. The importance and nutritional value of school meals are well documented. For many children, school lunch is the most important and nutrient-rich meal of their day. RGCGISD proudly operates several meal programs and serves breakfast, lunch, and supper meals at each campus. The program serves more than 7,000 meals each day. Recently, the District was selected as one of five districts in the state of Texas to receive a grant for recipe development. To learn more about school nutrition programs, please visit riograndecnp.org, squaremeals.org or www.schoolnutrition.org/SchoolMeals.

Driscoll Health Plan Makes $1,000 Contribution to Help Fund Roma ISD Easter Hunt Ringgold

Roma ISD would like to sincerely thank Driscoll Health Plan for their very generous $1,000.00 donation to help fund candy for the Roma ISD Superintendent’s Easter Egg Hunt, which is an annual event for district Pre-K, Kinder and Life Skills students. The event provided some holiday joy for children who may not otherwise be able to enjoy Easter fun at home. This year, the event served approximately 700

students. “Driscoll Health Plan continues to work closely with Roma ISD and collaborate in wonderful activities that impact positive family-schoolcommunity values. At Driscoll we understand that events, such as the Annual Easter Egg Hunt, are important for the development of the students in the environments where they live, learn and play,” said Rose Santos, Driscoll Health

Plan Outreach Manager. “Having a solid foundation affects a wide range of positive outcomes with social skills and social systems. We are excited to see the children celebrate this important time of the year.” Driscoll Health Plan is a nonprofit, community-based health insurance plan offering healthcare coverage to over 230,000 children, pregnant women, and other adults in its service area that includes 24 South Texas counties and 25,000 square miles. Its vast network of pediatric, adolescent and adult providers ensures every individual receives the right care for his or her needs. Driscoll Health Plan is part of the Driscoll Health System, which includes Driscoll Children’s Hospital that has served the children of South Texas for more than 65 years.
