Gladwin County Manufacturing
BE INNOVATIVE.
MANUFACTURING
A short drive through the Industrial Parks in the cities of Beaverton and Gladwin will surely bring light to the magnitude of manufacturing within our community. Parking lots full of employee vehicles, construction taking place in many of the larger companies, help-wanted signs on site, increased supplier activity, and delivery trucks coming and going on a regular schedule, are all evidence that the industry is thriving here in Gladwin County, the “Thermoforming (Manufacturing) Capital of the World”. Not only has there been an enormous investment in local manufacturing facilities in an effort to increase production and meet growing customer demands, but there has been a concerted effort to invest in our “Human Capital”. Highlevel trainings are taking place, in part due to the financial commitment of our State to provide support to our skilled trades industries, giving employees improved talents and abilities to produce world-class products that are being sold around the globe. The investment in our workforce has created higher-wage positions and has given talented and ambitious employees a great opportunity for career advancement within these companies. Further investment in talent comes by way of the strong relationship the industry has with local K-12 education, the
Clare / Gladwin R.E.S.D. – CTE Program, and Mid Michigan College. Industry awareness and engagement by students are steadily improving as companies: consider co-ops and internships, offer tours of their business to highlight local career opportunities, increasingly support community programs and events. Partnerships between the manufacturing industry and organizations such as the Central Michigan Manufacturers Association, the Gladwin County Economic Development Corporation, Michigan Works!, the Michigan Economic Development Corp., Mid Michigan College, the Small Business Development Center and others, has helped to foster the rich manufacturing history that is so evident throughout our community. In addition, our businessfriendly city government is committed to offering fast-track services to those interested in bringing their company to the area. Whether you hope to build or grow your business, or would like to explore the many fulfilling careers found within manufacturing in Gladwin County, we invite you to come and experience the best of what northern Michigan has to offer.

BEAVERTON Rising Tide Building a Foundation Every great institution is built on a solid foundation. Without that foundation buildings shift underfoot, and cracks start to appear in the plaster. It is also important to maintain that infrastructure over time. This maintenance is exactly what the cities of Beaverton and Gladwin are doing through Project Rising Tide. To assist with supporting and maintaining the cities foundation, both communities are working on several projects to set the ground work for the future. Currently, both communities will be working on their master plans, community branding, improving community outreach, reviewing their zoning ordinances, as well as conducting a housing study. These projects are important as they will set the foundation for community and economic growth. Working on these projects will allow both communities to set the stage to tackle larger community concerns and issues. By creating that foundation, the cities of Beaverton and Gladwin will be able to show a clear and transparent vision for the future. It will assist residents, developers, and community leaders by showing the communities priorities. This work can also open the community to possible outside funding to assist in community projects and addressing public concerns. Project Rising Tide is truly a grassroots program and is not a “cookie cutter” project. Its focus is to assist the communities of Beaverton and Gladwin by increasing capacity, implementing best practices, and creating a more barrier free environment for the public. It will also assist the surrounding communities by creating a unified direction and identity. Both cities are looking forward to accomplishing these tasks to create an excellent community to visit, work, and live in.

Life on the Trail: Traska’s Iditarod By Kaitlin Thorne Courtesy of The Gladwin County Record & Beaverton Clarion
After taking care of the dogs, finding Subway was the first order of business. “It was early morning when I finished and when we went in they were just making cookies. It was perfect timing. After days of not eating or sleeping much, food and sleep were my best friend for quite a while,” Traska said. At that exhaustive moment, the journey’s end for Traska must have seemed a lifetime from thestart. On Sunday, March 4, the race began. Once on the trail, she was on her own, other than help from fellow mushers and race officials, which Traska said is rare. “When I pull into a checkpoint, it’s all on me to care for the team and myself,” Traska said. Caring for the team at each checkpoint is an exhaustive process. Once Traska disconnects the dogs from the sled and spreads out straw beds for each dog, she puts jackets on the dogs to keep their muscles warm. Then she gets started on melting snow into hot water, which is then added to the dogs food to give them a warm meal. While all of this is going on, Traska checks her team for injuries and gives out medications or supplements as needed. After all of this she checks the supplies and then finally the dogs rest while Traska goes inside to eat and sleep. Checkpoints along the race are typically schools or community buildings. “Sleeping was usually on a floor in a noisy building surrounded by many snoring mushers,” Traska said. The most challenging aspect of 2018’s race for many mushers may have been the harsh weather. “There was a stretch between Ophir and Iditarod where it was snowing and blowing and there was literally no trail for us to follow,” Traska said. Traska’s team had to ‘break trail’ multiple times during the race. To break trail means to continue on the trail when the snow has covered it completely and appears as if there is no trail there. “Sometimes the dogs were up to their chest in snow. It is amazing to me how well the dogs did,” Traska said. That deep snow lead to problems for Traska’s team. Throughout the race, she had to drop nine dogs, mostly due to shoulder injuries – one of the most common sled dog injuries. This made finishing the race difficult for Traska, as she was down to seven dogs for the final 120 miles. “I was willing to risk not finishing to not push the dogs. All of the dropped dogs are totally fine and back to normal now. Rest is all they needed,” Traska said. Traska and her team mustered reserved determination and completed the final 120 miles to conquer what is called “The Last Great Race on Earth”. In her rookie year, Traska placed 48th out of 67 starting teams. “It’s still really hard to wrap my mind around the race and accomplishing a life-long dream,” Traska said. The Gladwin native had been dreaming of
the race since she was a child, and at times during the race she seemed to have a hard time believing it was actually happening. “To have these nine-year-old’s visions in my head of running this race and then to be out actually doing it is pretty surreal,” Traska said.
BE CELEBRATED.
ALASKA – Both exhausted and elated, Gladwin native, Shaynee Traska (Seipke), crossed the finish line of the 2018 Iditarod in Nome, Alaska. Twelve days and nearly 1,000 miles, a dream almost 20 years in the making was realized. Her reward? Oven-fresh Subway chocolate chip cookies.
Much of the race is surreal for those who run it, but for those who complete it, they quickly begin thinking about running again, and Traska was no different. She will be running the race again in March of 2019. No matter how Traska’s second race goes, she will always have the memories of her rookie year – both good and bad. “There were definitely times when I almost quit out there,” Traska said. During one section of the race, Traska nearly turned back to “scratch”, or drop from the race. “I prayed so hard during this time. I knew the Lord was with us and I just begged for a clear answer on what to do,” Traska said. With discouragement at an all time high, it took a phone call from Traska’s husband and parents to lift her spirits. She continued on, but still faced difficult moments. “Every time I would think about scratching, I thought of all the people in Gladwin and literally around the world that were rooting us on and praying,” Traska said. Once again, the prayers are what Traska said kept her going. “I totally believe that the prayers and God are what brought us through. Never was it my own or the dog’s strength out there, everything was coming from God. I felt His presence so deeply out there, it was all Him,” Traska said. That feeling of faith carried Traska through some of the most dangerous terrain she had ever faced. Not far from the finish line is the ‘blow hole’, a section of trail on the sea ice where a wind tunnel forms. Two teams had to be rescued from the section right before Traska reached the area. She arrived at the ‘blow hole’ in the middle of the night. “I had drifted off to sleep and was rocked awake by wind like I had never seen before,” Traska said, stating that the wind blew the team out towards the sea. “It turned into a life and death situation very quickly. I knew we had to get out of there before the dogs decided they’d had enough and didn’t want to go any further,” Traska said. Paxson, the single team leader, led the team out of the area. Despite the dangers that Traska faced, she found peace along the trail. In Traska’s sled, taking the journey with her was the cremation ash of her grandmother. Traska intended to bring her grandmother to Nome, but in a moment of serenity she altered her plan. Along a remote section she was moved by Alaska’s beauty. “I was very emotional during this stretch, taking in all of the beauty and what we were actually doing, living our dream. I loved this part of the trail so much that I decided to sprinkle some of her ashes in this area. The rest made it to Nome,” Traska said. Her supporters in Gladwin stayed with Traska every step of the way thanks to the online check in system that updates fans of the race where the mushers are. In September Traska was able to return to Gladwin to thank her supporters and give a presentation of her experiences along the trail.
While in Gladwin Representative Jason Wentworth presented Traska with a tribute from the State of Michigan on Friday, Sept. 14, in honor of her completion of the 2018 Iditarod. Wentworth spoke highly of Traska during the presentation. “This is an incredible feat, not just for you, but for this community to have somebody do something so amazing, and to be the first woman in Michigan, that’s incredible,” Wentworth said. Traska was presented with an American Flag that flew over the State Capital building on February 27. Traska will take the flag back to her home in Two Rivers, Alaska and fly it over Howling Ridge Kennel, the kennel run by she and her husband Jeremy. Wentworth also presented Traska with a special State of Michigan Tribute signed by himself and Senator Jim Stamas. Governor Rick Snyder, Attorney General Bill Schuette, and Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley will also be signing the tribute.
The Tribute document in part stated, “This document is signed and dedicated as a token of respect and admiration for Shaynee Traska as she made history as the first woman from Michigan to finish the Iditarod and also for her relentless hard work and dedication to perfect her racing craft”. Traska humbly thanked Wentworth for the honor, as well as the family, friends, and Gladwin County representatives in attendance. “I wouldn’t have been able to do it without all of you,” Traska said. Traska’s journey towards her Iditarod dream may have been long, but working towards her life-long goal has taught her the value of patience and the importance of the journey itself. “Enjoy the journey to your dream, looking back on it, it will go very quickly. And when it does happen, soak in every moment of it and stay humble as it comes true,” Traska said.

CGRESD-Led Coalition Secures $1.25 million CTE Grant Nearly 6,000 students in the region, including those in the Clare-Gladwin Career & Technical Education program, will be among the first beneficiaries of the state’s Marshall Plan for Talent Innovation Grants. The Clare-Gladwin Regional Education Service District, which administers the CTE program serving high school students in Gladwin, Farwell, Harrison, Beaverton and Clare, led a local consortium that applied for the $1.254 million grant. On Monday, the state announced it as one of nine awarded consortia in the state.
colleges and universities, our state legislators, non-profits and many other entities. And it was worth every ounce of effort to be able to better prepare our local kids for careers they will love.”
Jim McBryde, President and CEO of the Middle Michigan Development Corporation, convened the group known technically as the Middle Michigan Professional Trades Talent Consortium. MMPTTC will use the grant to accomplish several objectives in CTE Automotive & Diesel Technology labs in Clare and Gladwin, assisting with the purchase of modern equipment and technology, as well as hiring Career Navigators to assist students and establishing an educator externship program. Through a partnership with Mid Michigan College, students in the Automotive program will have the opportunity to earn more industryrecognized certifications while still in high school.
“This is a great win for our community, and especially for our kids,” McBryde said. “Every step we take is in the pursuit of developing our local talent to contribute to our local workforce, and this grant represents a significant leap in that direction.”
“The work put into earning this grant was unlike anything any of us had seen,” said CGRESD Superintendent Sheryl Presler. “For four months, we’ve collaborated with nearly 30 local organizations – schools, businesses,
The MMPTTC was one of just nine consortia awarded grants in the final phase after nearly 90 applied back in August. That number was pared down to 22 for the third and final round of applications in November before the final awardees were announced Monday at a ceremony in Lansing.
CTE Director Sandy Russell said the grant will benefit all local CTE students in some form or fashion. “While it’s true that the grant money will help us equip our new Automotive and Diesel lab at the Magnus Center in Clare County, as well as provide for some much-needed upgrades in the lab at Gladwin High School, this is going to help us better serve every CTE student,” Russell said. “With the ability to hire Career Navigators to work with students at each school, we’ll be able to close the gap between kids, their potential careers and the local employers who need their talents.”
State Rep. Jason Wentworth praised the RESD for pulling together the right team to earn the grant. “This is where the Clare-Gladwin RESD excels in a way that nobody else can – convening the right players for the job, carrying out the execution and leading the charge on impactful projects,” he said. “This was a massive undertaking, and the payoff for our students and communities is huge.” Presler was quick to credit the hard work of her CTE team and all the collaborative partners involved. “One of the prime directives from the state for this grant was to pool resources, time and talent with as many partners as we could, for all the obvious reasons,” she said. “The good news is that we’re already well-versed in doing that, and so are our collaborators. Our gratitude extends to all who pitched in; their impact will be felt through our CTE programs for years to come.” MARSHALL PLAN PARTNERS Convener Middle Michigan Development Corp.

BE REMEMBERED.
HISTORY
Beaverton Gem Theatre By Bob Frei The Gem Theatre must certainly be considered a cultural icon of Beaverton. Now it has again reclaimed its position as an economic asset to the city. Though it was the subject of an extended shutdown for remodeling and refurbishment, it has always and only been a movie theatre. Today it is more than just a theatre, it is a jewel - a point of pride for the city and the county. Jim Methner was a long-time Beaverton businessman whose grocery store was located where part of the Beaverton Tavern now resides. He also operated a fuel oil delivery route and raised cattle. But it was clear that his heart was in the theatre he had opened on Ross Street (M-18) in Beaverton in October of 1940. Previously motion pictures had been shown at the Star Theatre in Gladwin and occasionally in the Beaverton Community Center that stood immediately to the south of the Gem. Following the success of his Gem Theatre, Jim built another theatre in Coleman which he named The Sandra after his niece. For a time, both were profitable. By the late 1950s, however, television had replaced the movies as the primary entertainment in most homes. As a result, theatres everywhere struggled to fill their seats. He closed the Coleman theatre in 1958. Gladwin’s Star closed the following year. For more than 25 years, people stayed home to watch TV rather than go to a movie. Through it all, Jim continued to operate the Gem, and continued to offer first run movies at lower prices than the big city theatres. Through those lean years Jim did not make enough money from the theatre to afford many updates, but he continued to operate on a regular schedule, sometimes employing others to assist as he aged. Many still remember Jim in the ticket booth well into his late 80s and in failing health. According to Jim’s sometimes employee and Gladwin County Record scribe, Pat Weaver, “Jim loved it. He raised cattle for years. He had a fuel oil route, he had the grocery store. All these he let go when he got too old to take care of them, but the theatre he held on to, right to the end.” Jim died in December 1989. His sister, Virginia Hooper, took over for a short time before selling the theatre to Henry Huckins early in 1990. Like many others, Mr. Huckins could not bear the thought of Beaverton’s beloved theatre closing down. During January 1993, Henry put in larger seats and reduced the capacity to 338 to allow more leg room. In addition, he remodeled the lobby and concession area, replaced carpeting and installed new fabric curtains on the theatre walls. At the same time, he installed the Gem’s first “surround sound” system. Like his predecessor, Mr. Huckins worked hard to keep prices low, but there were many times when revenues could not cover expenses. Henry List acquired the theatre in May of 2001 again because he did not want to see it closed, and because his son had worked there as a projectionist beginning with Jim Methner. He upgraded the electrical service and the heating system. He also replaced the projectors with a single projector using a continuous feed system that did not require switching projectors as each reel ended. Henry was generous in offering the Gem for use by community groups on Mondays when the theatre was normally dark. We can never know how much money was
raised by church, community, educational and other groups during his tenure. By 2014, however, the movie industry had continued to modernize. Movies were no longer rendered to film - they became all digital. This made old fashioned movie projectors obsolete. It also presented a problem for Henry, whose equipment was designed only for film. In order for the Gem to survive, he needed a very significant investment in digital projection equipment, but ticket sales and concession sales were not enough to justify the expenditure, and the revenue stream from the theatre was not enough to qualify for a bank loan. A community bake sale was organized that raise $875 toward the effort, and a kickstarter campaign was begun which raised significant pledges, but not enough to get the job done. For the love of the theatre and of the town, he made the investment allowing the Gem to make the jump into the 21st century in 2015. On October 1, 2015, Henry celebrated by showing War Room in full digital for an admission of only 75 cents. But Henry’s health took a turn for the worse. He passed away on February 27, 2016. Just the day before his death he had closed on the sale of the Gem Theatre to Jim Wyrembelski and his family. Jim Wyrembelski Jr. had dreamed of owning the Gem since his high school days. His enthusiasm for the idea infected his entire family. Jim Sr. was already involved in the real estate development industry, so when the opportunity presented itself, they jumped at the chance. Over the next 2½ years the Gem Theatre experienced a metamorphosis. The original plan was to modernize and refurbish the whole building – new restrooms, lobby, concession area, new seats with even more leg room, and a crisp new look that borrowed the best elements of successful small-town theatres, and gave it a new style all its own. Instead of just remodeling the utilitarian structure, they made it into a classic beauty befitting its name. They made it a masterpiece – a real Gem! With great anticipation it reopened on Friday, October 19th showing “Halloween” starring Jamie Lee Curtis. Its fully restored popcorn machine is featured prominently in the concession area. Seating capacity has been reduced to 188 with the new seating configuration and larger seats. Toward the back are rows of large lounge seats that provide even greater comfort. Outside a new, classic marquee boasts the theatres name, and electronic signage proclaims the features and the show times. Best of all, the new rest rooms are spacious, accessible, and beautiful. As is the tradition of the Gem, pricing of both tickets and refreshments remains very affordable. Just another reason Beaverton loves its Gem. Welcoming every guest with an ear to ear smile is manager Jim Wyrembelski Jr. His youthful dream has become a reality, and that reality is a new future for a Beaverton institution. As it approaches its 80th year in 2020, it is clear that Beaverton’s Gem is here to stay, all because of the historical tenacity of older men and thanks to a young man’s dream.
