This years’ cover features an amazing photograph by Bend resident, Benjamin Edwards. Along with his wife Lauren, together their images have graced covers, print ads, and publications around the world. The essence of their philosophy can best be summed up in Benjamin’s own words regarding his prime directive.... “I believe beauty can be found in the young and old of africa and the forgotten elderly of our united states, the eyes of the homeless and hurting, and in those who may be too large to fit in the box people like to title “beautiful.” We are extremely blessed and proud to feature his outrageous talent on our anniversary cover. Celebrating our 10th Anniversary! F

We are once again thrilled to have the opportunity to present you the latest and greatest trends, ideas and the means to access the best local professionals in the business of staging outrageous weddings and events. 2011 in Central Oregon was a year of modest economic growth. With over two thousand weddings in Central Oregon each year, the need for a sound resource for clients to connect with industry professionals becomes increasingly necessary. We at Celebrations Wedding & Event Resource Guide are proud to continually provide this marketing tool for all our local professionals. Again this year, we are featuring three amazing weddings from 2011. Each spread illustrates the extreme high calibre of professional skill and artistry that is available here on the High Desert. We hope these images stimulate ideas and tap emotions that will become the foundation for your celebration. With Five Pine Lodge as the stage, the natural setting came to life with the soothing sounds of Bill Keale. On a beautiful sunny August day, Black Butte Ranch was host to a lively and colorful celebration. The infusion of fuchsia and black throughout the wedding created a powerful visual statement. As a destination wedding, they chose the Central Oregon area for its beauty and abundance of sunshine. With the Cascade Mountain Range as their backdrop, the lake side wedding was nestled under the natural birch trees that provided an abundance of necessary shade during the ceremony. The resort provided an elaborate buffet dinner, complete with the groom’s favorite entrÊe, Prime Rib. Foregoing the traditional cake, the bride and groom opted for a festive display of various candies and sugared delights. The lively crowd danced the night away to the live sounds of Swing Line Cubs. Truly an inspirational wedding filled with an abundance of love and laughter.

It’s no surprise that the first thing a newly engaged bride thinks of looking for is the perfect wedding dress. It’s a unique female “right of passage.” I believe the thoughts start gelling immediately after her first exposure to the “Cinderella Story.” From that moment on, the dreams of a horse drawn carriage, long flowing, shimmering, white dress and fairy tale prince charming begin. Don’t lie! You’ve had those dreams! As we grow older, the dreams persist. However, the details of the entire event become more mature and realistic. They reach their pinnacle right at the moment that perfect guy “pops the question.” OH BOY! Now the fun begins! Now it’s time to get your posse together and start the quest to create the look and find the dress to match the dream. Where do you begin? The first thing to do is to define your personal wedding palette! Colors. Textures. Styles. Personal Quirks! One of the best places to begin this search is with available media. Magazines, movies, web searches as well as real life fairy tales can help you to better define what your looking for. Like many of us, public weddings like last year’s royal wedding can stoke the personal juices and help get you inspired.

Does an “All White Wedding” sound right? How about incorporating a “wild color” or antique heirloom into the mix? No matter what the choices, they should reflect every aspect of your personality. Whether princess or diva, it’s the details that make the difference. Choosing unique accessories that complement your core attire is what makes the entire ensemble “yours.” Don’t be afraid to push the envelope. Make it memorable! The obvious easiest way to jump start an ensemble is with color. If your personality says, “bold and brash,” look for HOT colors like fuchsia, turquoise or lime green. If your style is more subtle and serene, consider SOFT pastels like sage, lilac or peach. Color accents can be incorporated into your dress as well as the entire wedding party ensemble. This splash of color can be a vest, tie or boutonniere for the men or the overall dress color for the bridesmaids. In the past few years, shoes in bold colors for both the men and women have become quite popular. If you really want to make a statement, put your groomsmen in “orange tennis shoes”! However, don’t forget the “sunglasses” for the rest of your guests. Brides can be daring as well. Recent fashion trends are incorporating colored accents into many wedding gowns. Colored or intricate embroidered trim details and waist bands can be a powerful embellishment that unifies the entire wedding party look. Don’t be shy! Have some Fun! As for accessories... Nostalgia is in! Consider an heirloom piece of jewelry, a vintage broach, pair of cuff links or special photos and family mementos incorporated into your bouquet. So much of who you are is associated with those memories. Make them a recognized part of your celebration. Don’t forget the endless accent possibilities with the bouq u e t s and boutonnieres. Flowers can be the main attraction or the ribbon that ties the entire look together. It’s a magical game of juxtaposition to fit all the pieces together. The joy is in a finished product that defines both you and your groom. NO matter how you get there... make it FUN!

Beauty is in the eye of the Beholder? If you asked a hundred different people what their definition of “beauty” was, you would probably get a hundred different answers. From simplistic and innocent to sensual and exotic, the adjectives to define the perfect characteristics of beauty would be broad and diverse. There are many kinds of beauty. In every case, “genuine beauty” emanates from inside the individual and manifests itself through a combination of physical attributes, personal confidence and internal spirit. However, beauty is not only in the eye of the beholder. It is also in the heart of the individual. Confidence is a major factor. Many women often do not feel exceptionally attractive. Trust me, from a man’s point of view, women are “rarely” unattractive. Nevertheless, it’s important that we acknowledge this factor, because it contributes profoundly to a women’s desire to accentuate her physical appearance. This simple factor created a worldwide industry that has been alive and well on this planet for millennia. The Health and Beauty Services Industry. From top to bottom, hair to toes, professional salons offer a multitude of services that can sooth, relax, cover or accentuate just about every part of a person’s body. I say “person’s”, because many of the services provided are for both men and women. That’s right boys, you haven’t lived until you’ve had a professional “massage”! But I digress..... When we consider a wedding, there is probably no time in a women’s life when she wants to feel more “beautiful.” It’s every young girls dream. It’s the closest she will ever get to becoming the fairy tale princess she envisioned in her childhood. Consequently, her look has to be genuine and it has to be “perfect.” With time at a premium during the final hours before a wedding, handling all the details from head to toe can be daunting. This is the perfect time to be “pampered.” A professional beauty consultant can not only make the process less stressful, but can also make if fun! If time is of the essence or your wedding location is remote, many local professionals will come to your wedding site and perform their magic while you sit back with a tall crystal of champagne and enjoy the “princess treatment.” Now this is the way to start a lifetime of bliss! You might consider making it an event and include the entire wedding party. Keep in mind, that’s going to require more champagne! Much Much More CHAMPAGNE!

Coordinators Details! Details! Details! When you consider the amount of time necessary to address all the details required to plan the perfect wedding, the thought can be a bit overwhelming. Does copious hours of phone calls and personal interviews with event professionals sound like FUN to you? If not, then maybe it’s time to consider hiring a professional. The decision to hire a wedding coordinator can be extremely simple once you consider the benefits. Do you have a full time job? How much time a week in the next six months do you have to dedicate to all the DETAILS? Where do you begin? How do you find the professionals you need? All these questions are not only relevant, but also genuine! If you found that the answer to any of the above questions tapped your schedule or stress level to the MAX, it might be time to consider searching for a professional Coordinator. As the “bride to be” your time is best utilized dealing with your gown, your color selections, your wedding party and your guest list. With the assistance of a coordinator, your next responsibility is “showing up”! Wedding coordinators function as your guide, your sounding board and your resource for the necessary professionals required to get the job done. Moreover, they act as your “stress cushion”! Any problems are addressed and resolved through them. You remain aloof! Talk about a STRESS RELIEVER!!! Nevertheless, they can be “life-savers.” Based on your individual needs, there are several ways you can work with a coordinator. Obviously, the full service coordinator after initial consultation handles all the details from conception to completion. She is responsible for every time line, every purveyor, every rental item and the virtually every detail of your wedding WOW! Go on vacation until wedding day!!! The second way to incorporate a coordinator is to have her function as the “Day Of Director”. In this case, you take care of all the individual details of the wedding and she steps in on the “wedding day” to ensure that everything comes off without a hitch. Lastly, the most recent trend in the Wedding Industry is the “Wedding Salon”. In essence, these are clearing houses. A virtual amalgamation of Wedding Industry professionals homogenized in one location. One stop shopping of sort, where you can sit in one room and have access to a full spectrum of professionals that can globally assist you with all the details of your project. In short, you have the opportunity to meet directly with each purveyor in one location, work out your specific details, utilize all their resources and move forward. No matter which path you choose, the incorporation of a professional coordinator will make your entire wedding planning experience simpler and more stress free.

No need to excuse or explain non-traditional wedding plans. They have never been more in style. Moreover, guests are loving it! The rise in vintage or rustic inspired weddings mirrors a growing interest for all things nostalgic. This trend is all about embracing simplicity and bringing new life into old things. From vintage furniture and décor to the wedding attire for the bride and groom there are endless options to acquire that vintage look. Reusing old items are great for the environment and are a chance to use special items from loved ones. Grandma’s prized collection of perfume bottles, salt and pepper shakers, gilded bottles, cameras, books, mason jars, candlesticks, and vintage wedding pictures can add a beautiful and unique design to your centerpieces…..a sentimental touch that only the bride and groom can own. Using rustic benches and antique chairs for the seating of the guests makes for a very comfortable and homey feel. Chandeliers of scrolled iron or rustic plank with mason jars can add that “wow” factor to the overall look in the room and create romantic lighting. Photographers love to capture these details for a keepsake that the bride and groom will enjoy for years to come. Local event rental companies can be a source for unique vintage furniture and accessories. This option

can take the time and footwork out of finding those perfect vintage pieces for your wedding. Choosing a rental company that offers vintage items as well as all of your other equipment needs will make your planning process much easier. Transforming a stoic white tent into a palatial boudoir of white chiffon is a small challenge for a good rental company. Anything is possible. If you can dream it, an experienced rental company can make it happen. But atmosphere is only as strong as the details that support the basic concept. How do you tie in your linens, china, chairs, colors and floral arrangements. The rental company is your “genie in the bottle” for all aspects of your design concept. China, glassware, linens, crystal stemware, flatware, vases, chairs, tables, chandeliers and props of all kind are readily available from most professional rental companies. Don’t be afraid to ask for something outrageous! If they don’t have it on site, there is a very good chance they know exactly where to get it. The bottom line is.... don’t stifle your idea by not being able to personally find the exact components you’re looking for. That’s where the professional decorator can make the biggest difference. Reach out to them with your inspiration and challenge them to make it happen. If you make the leap of faith, I am certain you will turn the “demure” into the “dynamic.”

Sweets to Complement any Entre or Craving

As the centerpiece of your reception goodies, your cake is a statue of edible art that you will remember forever. Besides it’s obvious beauty and delectability, it often is an adjunct of your overall wedding theme. It can accentuate the colors, textures or time of year in a way few edible items on the menu can. Many couples opt to have their cake emulate specific aspects of their personalities or favorite past experiences. How about one that looks like that favorite tall glass of dark beer you both love.... or what about that mountain lodge fireplace where he first proposed? Nothing is too outrageous. What happens if someone has a “twinkie attack” before the cutting of the cake? No problem! Consider a special display of cupcakes and candies. These spreads are all the rage! Crowd pleasing options such as the trendy cupcake tree filled with a variety of flavors can take the edge off a sugar TENTH ANNIVERSARY ISSUE - 2002 - 2012 TENTH ANNIVERSARY ISSUE - 2002 - 2012 TENTH ANNIVERSARY ISSUE - 2002 - 2012 TENTH ANNIVERSARY ISSUE - 2002 - 2012

starved adult for a few minutes. Or for those “chocoholics”, what about crystal goblets filled with monogrammed M&M’s or truffles. OK, now I’m getting a craving! For the young at heart, bowls of colored taffies, hard candies, tootsie pops or sugar coated jellied delights. To add a special temptation, consider adding paper bags and scoopers for your guests to “fill at will”. This should drive the kids CRAZY! Not to mention every dentist in the room. What about highlighting a favorite family desert tradition such as tiramisu, or cheesecakes with an array of toppings. For the health nuts in the crowd, how about tempting them with white and dark chocolate covered strawberries. No matter what direction you take, the area is sure to be the focal point of the reception food court. Have some fun with it and it can become a reception detail that is nothing short of MAGICAL!

GOURMET HOMESTYLE COUNTRY THEMED

wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww There is little doubt that FOOD is a definitive aspect of any celebration. Type, Preparation, and Presentation, all factor into the process of selection. It can be the crowning moment in an evenings festivities, or if prepared poorly... the crushing blow that will linger in the minds of all the guests. Success or failure is not only dependent on the menu preparation and presentation, but also on the experience and professional skill of the master chef at the helm. Like many of you, I consider myself a better than average chef. However, when it comes to 100+ guests and having each course served on time at the peak of perfection, it is often a good idea to secure the talents of a professional caterer. We in Central Oregon are blessed to have a bounty of excellent professionals to meet your needs. Set up personal interviews with possible candidates to compare menu options. Always request a TASTING! Further factors to consider after taste should be availability, staffing, set-up and clean up, attitude, willingness to please, personal reccommendations, personality, and of course price! Before you make a decision, get the details and time line in writing along with a signed contract. Bon Appetit!

SPIRITS

WHO HAS THE LICENSE? WHO CAN SERVE THE DRINKS?

Heirloom Images Photography Heather Jordan Photography

No matter what the event, the inclusion of alcoholic beverages always adds a new dimension of excitement to the festivities. While no one knows exactly when alcohol was first used, it was presumably the result of a fortuitous accident that occurred at least tens of thousands of years ago. The discovery of late Stone Age beer jugs established the fact that fermented beverages existed at least as early as the 10,000 B.C. Presently, spirits have become a mainstay in the social culture of entertainment. From the traditional champagne toast to exotic concoctions designed to support a chosen theme, alcoholic beverages can be a positive contribution to any social gathering. However, before you purchase a case of Jose Quervo and break out the old college blender to showcase your personal talents of “mixology”, you might want to consult a local professional regarding state liquor laws and proper distribution requirements. The Oregon Liquor Control Commission requires that you have a license to serve any alcoholic beverages to the public. If you decide to do the work yourself, you can purchase a day license for your event from the OLCC. However, anyone who serves alcoholic beverages at your event, whether beer, wine or champagne, must have in their possession an OLCC server permit. Server permits are issued after completing a short course on Oregon state liquor laws and serving requirements. The permit can then be issued after passing a written test. NO ONE is legally allowed to serve alcoholic beverages without the permit. One way to usurp the entire issue is to have your venue, caterer or an outside beverage service provide and serve your liquor. These professionals carry the state license required, as well as the professional servers necessary to meet all the state requirements. They can save you tons of headaches as well as possible fines. No matter which way you choose to go, always remember to “Drink and Serve Responsibly”!

TRANSPORTATION A statement of style and practicality

So why do we need to spend the money on transportation when we both own cars? That question might be answered right after you hop in your vehicle and try to find a place to park for the fourth time the morning of your wedding. There is no doubt that hiring transportation is a luxury. Private transportation can not only save you headaches, it can also be extremely comforting and quite romantic. No matter what mobile devise you might select, it becomes your private chariot as well as your personal statement of style. From the simplistic elegance of a horse drawn carriage to the sophistication of a stretch limo, each has it’s own individual sense of “savior faire” that lifts any celebration to a new plateau. Keep in mind.... mobility is the key. Be creative! Be different! Nothing is too outrageous if it feels good to you. So, where is that red “BIG WHEEL” trike I used to have?

VIDEOGRAPHY

The Perfect Tool to Fully Document Your Special Day!

Years after the flowers have all faded and the wedding dress has been stored, you can relive the joy of the entire experience with friends and familiy by simply viewing your wedding day video. Nothing documents the diverse emotions and spontaneous jubilance of the entire day quite like video! Video simultaneously captures all the sounds and sentiments attached to the visual images and weaves them together with a harmonious ribbon of love. Many brides and grooms consider it their greatest gift because it documents happenings and emotions that they were not privy to on the actual wedding day. In a recent survey taken with brides after their weddings, 79% of the brides placed videography among their Top 10 priorities. If you are looking for a powerful and poingnant memory to share with your friends, family and children for decades to come, then a wedding video is just what you are looking for.

Disc Jockey’s Re-defining the job description of DJ!

Original Photo: Byron Roe Photography

captivatemotivatemanipulateentertain Written by: Dave Wilkins, Endorsed Entertainment Director– Star Productions DJ’s

What elements are most important to you when considering the selection of a DJ for your wedding reception? Granted, most are quite adept at selecting and playing music. However, there are many more ways he or she can contribute to the overall success of your event. Do you envision an evening of high energy and dancing? Wild line dancing and laughter? Do you have anyone who is responsible for keeping things moving and making sure all the aspects of your day come off on schedule? Who is responsible for music content and song selection? Who will announce and organize the cake cutting, garter toss and first dance? If any of these requirements strikes a nerve, then you might be looking for more than just an average DJ. You might consider a professional who is adept at music, motivation, creating energy, diplomacy, stress management, scheduling, organizing, entertaining, dancing and even a little manipulation. All these characteristics form the foundation for today’s new Professional Music DJ and Wedding Event Director. A professional DJ/MC and Event director has the qualifications and experience to make your celebration serene and elegant, or as rockin’ as you desire. His first responsibility is to define all the necessary requirements for your wedding day. Far in advance or your wedding day an experienced DJ/Director should meet with you to plan your entire reception timetable and song list based on your personal preferences. Knowing what music NOT to play is equally as important as knowing what to play. Especially, if guests

make requests that do not comply with your specifications. A prime responsibility of the DJ is to select music that reflects your personal tastes while still unifying the entire group. Not as easy as it sounds! Certainly not something cousin Phil can do with his IPOD, a microphone and a martini. While your guests will come from a multitude of backgrounds and musical tastes, a professionally trained DJ knows how to incorporate the right music from the ideal genre, at the exact “right time” to energize the entire room. In short, he is a “Master of Positive Manipulation!” He is part music aficionado.... part psychologist! Along with the music responsibilities, the Wedding Event Director should work closely with your caterer, photographer and other on site professionals to make sure your itinerary is followed and that your guests know exactly what is happening at all times. In a nutshell, an experienced, professional DJ/Wedding Event Director can not only improve the success of your wedding reception, but he or she can also reduce the amount of “wedding day”stress for you, your family and your guests. Consequently, this is not the place to try to save on your budget. 80% of brides surveyed after their event wished they would have spent more on their DJ/MC. As they say, “You get what you pay for”! Don’t settle for something that could potentially jeopardise the success of your reception! Do your homework diligently! Interview any potential candidates thoroughly to ensure you have the right fit. Get recommendations and check backgrounds. Make certain they are insured and have back-up gear in case of any electronic problems. Lastly, make sure the individual “FEELS GOOD” to you. Remember, talent, experience, professionalism and personality are the key ingredients. Lastly, it’s time to put on your dancin’ shoes and get ready for a reception that you, your friends and family will “NEVER FORGET”!

TENTH ANNIVERSARY ISSUE - 2002 - 2012

BOLD AND VIBRANT? SOFT AND SENSUAL? Written by: Michael John, National Entertainer, Central Oregon Director, Sterling Talent Inc.

No matter what type of event you are planning, from the simplest cocktail party to the rowdiest wedding reception, live entertainment always adds excitement and pizzazz to the mix. It’s hard to quantify the value of live versus electronic, but somehow the sound presence of actual instruments along with the skill of qualified musicians or entertainers, just adds to the overall energy and ambiance of festivities. Moreover, live musicians have the ability to be spontaneous with their music in a way that often encourages audience participation and frivolity. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of incredibly talented interactive DJ’s to be had out there. But the dynamic sound and vibration created by a live drum kit or upright bass combined with the interwoven rhythms of electric guitar, acoustic piano or brass instruments just gets my blood going and my feet wanting to dance. For more intimate romantic environments, there is nothing more seductive than exquisite classical music or sensual new age jazz. In each case, the tone, timbre and emotion created is totally a matter of your personal artistic selection. Finding that perfect act for your wedding reception or rehearsal party is not always as easy as it sounds. Though many entertainers and groups have jumped into the 21st century and established a web presence, they are still not often difficult to locate. Consulting a local agency can make the job much easier and efficient. Not only can you save time, but they may also be able to provide you with options that may better fit your situation and budget. Agents have access to thousands of entertainment acts in a broad spectrum of genres. No matter how you locate your talent, remember to check references, ask for valid up to date promotional material and always document all your specifications in a formal mutually signed contract.
