Brief 13

Cath Kidston Challenge Design a new conversational print taking into account the Cath Kidston brand values and print style.

The print should be designed to be used across three of Cath Kidston product categories; Women’s Fashion, Women’s Accessories and Home.

Solution A printed illustration/pattern based around the traditional British seaside. The print aims to create nostalgia of childhood memories from visiting the seaside when you are young. This has also been combined with their unique style.

Researching into a brief is one of the main things done before the brief is started; this has allowed me to outline the key things that need to be influenced. This together with the colour schemes and styles that needs to be used to create an effective final piece. While the research has given me inspiration I must make sure they do not conflict with Cath Kidston, but match and improves the look and feel of the brand and style.

My approach to this brief has been through concept development; this was undertaken after my research.

This has allowed me to outline the main keywords and icons scenes within Britain. While these brainstorms are not exhaustive they hope to give you a sample of my design approach and how my concepts and ideas have been developed.

Development of my concept and design ideas was key as it has helped influence the design style and methods of printing that shall be used to produce the final outcome of this project.

The methods of development took were done via a hand drawn approach this has allowed me to improve the design as best as possible before it has been imported into the computer for finalisation and tweaking.

This brief used a range of printing methods such as screen-printing, fabric printing and digital printing.

These methods of printing have allowed me to explore new printing methods that I have not used before; this has also helped influence the final outcome of the project. The use of these professional printing methods has helped display the final products in the best way.

I have produced three versions of this pattern, three different colour ways has been requested by Cath Kidston within the brief set for this design. While these colours have been chosen to best highlight the British seaside they still have a Cath Kidston twist making it appeal towards female Cath Kidston consumers.

These are my final printed material for the Cath Kidston brief; these have been produced to help showcase my final pieces and how they would look on real promotional products. The products were printed upon them, using a range of different methods.
