Brief 16
Research Publication Challenge Undertake a period of focused, in-depth and sustained research into an area of graphic design appropriate to your design strategy. You should apply a range of research methods in the investigation of issues, practices, practitioners and companies relating to your own particular area of study. This should culminate in the design and production of a Case Study in the form of a publication. Solution Within my personal practice it has become clear that my area of interest lies within brand and packaging, a lot of my final projects take on some form of 3-dimentional structure. This research Publication reflects my own creative, professional and practical concerns within the field of contemporary design practice. The concept for this publication is all about packaging been a treat and a delight for me throughout the year.

While I believe this is one of the most important parts of this brief as produce a publication with a correct concept and direction shall help make the research publication more interesting and allow more people to interact with it easier The use of these diagrams and images has helped shape my initial ideas into a viable concept.

Creating a design that is effective at grabbing the audience attention is important. I have developed this idea to be linked with the type of packaging I shall produce to help house my publication. While the idea and research publication is based around the research I have been undertaking throughout the year, the use of this design shall help to make the subject interesting to anybody who may not be interesting in packaging design.

Producing mock-ups and nets for the outer cover allowed me to create an accurate design and test the format before printing and producing the final design. The final design was printed using digital print and then laminated to create a sturdy package and protect the outer cover. To create more precise and professional outcomes, I created score marks down the fold lines to allow the paper to fold better. The publication itself was digitally printed and then glue bound with fabric binding strip to make the binding edge look a lot more tidy and professional.

The idea behind the outer packaging for the publication was to communicate the concept of packaging been delightful and intriguing. I created the packaging to look like a sweet wrapper to reflect the idea that the publication is a packaging treat, which is something I believe in within my own practice I love shifting through packaging blogs and looking at innovative packaging on the shelves, this is something special and creative to express the effect that packaging has on people. The outer packaging had been printed on thick matt stock and laminated for more strength and a quality finish. The design on the cover reflects the traditional design style of sweet wrappers. The slogan communicates the common slogans and copy found on packaging to create enthusiasm about the product contained.

The publication has been made to fit within the outer packaging. The publication contains research and information about packaging and all things personal to my own practice. Case studies and inspiration has also been added within the publication to showcase the studios I have been looking at and desire to work for one day. The publication has been printed on ivory and green card to allow the content to stand out. Introduction and conclusion within the publication explains my personal reasons for undertaking this in-depth research. The publication and the outer packaging look visually attractive, with a strong concept behind them. This is the type of designs I like to create and will continue to produce.
