WELL DONE BOYS! It’s been 58 years in the making, but the celebrations around the Counties-Manukau area this week after the Steelers won a thriller against Hawkes Bay on Saturday have been worth waiting for. The epic, down to the wire, victory for the coveted Ranfurly Shield has suddenly made this Sunday’s 2.35pm match against Taranaki a

must-see event for any local rugby fan. It will be the first time ever that Counties have played a shield defence, and expectations are of one of the biggest crowds ever seen at what is now EcoLight Stadium in Pukekohe. Meanwhile, the Ranfurly Shield will be taken on a triumphant tour of the district, with parades in Ma-

nukau, Papakura and Pukekohe yesterday, while this afternoon (Tuesday) it will be toured around Manurewa Schools. On Wednesday between 9am and 11am Papakura Schools will get the chance to see the ‘Log of Wood’, while it will be at Massey park, Papakura through lunchtime before heading for more local schools. In

the evening it will be displayed at the Ardmore-Marist Rugby Club. Thursday between 9am and 3pm sees the Shield visiting schools in the wider Franklin area, before appearing in the Waiuku Town Square between 3.30pm and 5pm and then heading to the Waiuku Rugby Club between 6pm and 7.30pm.

On Friday it will be displayed at Eco Light Stadium between 1pm and 5pm, and, hopefully, that’s where it will remain after the final whistle against Taranaki on Sunday! Inside this week: 202-match veteran of Counties Rugby, Alan Dawson gives his view, page 5. Match report v Hawkes Bay, page 23.

Award for First Steps centre Artist says she doesn’t condone tagging First Steps Waiuku were the only childcare centre in the South Region to receive a Trustmark Award across all three available categories at the Kidicorp Annual Conference in Auckland recently. The three categories were Leadership and Management, Working

with Others and Quality Teaching. The recognition saw them the only centre of 31 in the region to collect the award across all three sectors. The team received $3000 to spend on resources for the centre and say they have already purchased two

small whares for the children to enjoy in both the Infants and Preschool. “It was great to be recognised nationally for all the hard work and dedication that the staff at First Steps put into the daily learning and care of the children,” a spokesperson said.

Carmel Stewart, who featured in a Post article last week regarding her development of a Soul of Art project in Tuakau, says that she does not condone tagging at all, however recognises the talent of young people and graffiti as an artform when practised in a controlled area with an aim in mind. With this in mind Soul Of Art Community wishes to encourage the talent of the young people of Tuakau by providing paints, boards and a demonstration by a well known graffiti artist at the Tuakau Community Day on October 19.

The works produced on the day along with a series of portraits will become the focus of an exhibition following the Community day’. “I believe that by giving the young people a voice through a medium which they enjoy there will be no reason to use tagging around the town at all as a form of expression,” she says. Mudlarks ready for return to work Members of the Waiuku Mudlarks group look set to be back at work clearing mangroves earlier than they expected, after what they described a ‘positive’ discussions with Auckland Council representatives last week. The group’s chairman, Ian Scobie, said there are still some compliance issues to be resolved, (including the band of retired farmers completing a course on how to safely operate a chainsaw!), but they will be allowed to

recommence work on two of the sites they have been clearing in the past few months. After this comes the process to obtain a new resource consent for further areas to be cleared, to allow the project to continue clearance towards the Sandspit Road section, and Ian said he is hopeful that early estimates of in excess of 18 months for this consent may yet prove to be longer than may be needed. Asked whether the group

was enjoying a bit of a break, Ian laughed and said no way, the team are ‘keen as mustard’ to get back into the job and carry on enhancing the look of the Waiuku Estuary and environs. The group are hoping to host a seedling clearing day in the near future, involving the local community as a way to allow the many people who have offered their support to have the chance assist with mangrove clearance.

Work continues to improve loo state I would like to reply to the letter regarding the state of the toilets by the old New World carpark. This is an issue that not only myself, the Information Centre staff and both our two local board representatives have had enough of. We have sent countless ‘service requests’ to Auckland Council and talked with Council staff complaining about the state of these toilets. We are constantly told and assured that cleaners are cleaning these amenities daily and the fouling is done after the cleaner has left. However, I do think it is terrible that some members of the public find it acceptable and funny to treat public property in such a disgusting manner blocking the toilets, leaving their rubbish and defecating on the floor. The WB&DA work very hard organising events to promote Waiuku, bring people into the town and bring financial benefits to the community and unfortunately too often many of our visitors are greeted with the dirty toilet. This is not the image we want to portrait of our town or a memory we want them to leave with. Please know that we are working with Police on the matter and currently sifting through CCTV footage to try and identify the culprits responsible. We will also keep working with Council to get this annoying issue resolved. Sharlene Druyven Waiuku Town Manager

As chairman of the newly-formed Waiuku Estuary Restoration Society, I strongly urge the people of Waiuku and surrounding area to vote wisely in the coming local body elections. At the moment, the ‘Mudlarks’ have been hindered from progressing our projects to remove mangroves, improve coastal fringes and help to connect and complete the walkway system that will benefit not only the townspeople themselves, but will bring in more tourists which will create more revenue for the town’s businesses. The Mudlarks’ desire to clear the estuaries of the invasive mangrove has, we believe, the support of the majority of the residents, with the improved outlook from their properties, better access for boating and giving more scope for fish and wading birds to return to the cleared waterways. We have offered to help mitigate the issues we apparently inadvertently caused, which resulted in our programmes being curtailed at the moment. These include planting the native rushes to create a continuous band of erosion protection around the shoreline, these being far more effective than the mangroves are. Some of the candidates putting their name forward have, I believe, the potential to improve the situation and drive our projects to a better conclusion than is being done at the moment. My suggestion is to give a lot of thought as to which candidates have the greatest desire to push for an improved relationship with the council and its officers. Ian Scobie, Waiuku.

The Government should reassess its commitment to spend millions of dollars of taxpayer money on GE when the rewards are few but the risks are substantial. New Zealand’s long term economic future lies in producing and exporting food that is clean, green, and safe. The McGuinness report highlights that, since 1988, there have been 52 reported incidents involving GMOs. It finds that New Zealand is ‘less equipped to make a strategic decision to release GMO’s in the outdoors in 2013 than it was a decade ago’. Public money should be invested into smarter ways to farm organically, ensure the safety and traceability of our food production, raise animals in more humane ways, and lower the

carbon footprint of farming. Organic exports from New Zealand are growing in value: • Organic product exports were between NZ$215 and NZ$225m in value in 2012 – approximately a 25 percent increase since 2009. • Fresh fruit and vegetables are still the most important product category by value, accounting for more than NZ$ 96m (45 percent) of total exports. • Dairy products continue to be the second largest export category. The value of organic dairy exports has grown 33 percent since 2009. • Processed foods and ingredients have grown 45 percent since 2009. The processed food and ingredients category now includes the largest number of export market participants of any category of this study.

Phone: 09 235 7835

• Organic beverages, wine and beer have grown 70 percent in value since 2009. • Meat and wool have grown in export value by 11 percent since 2009, with a number of new participants entering this field. • Organic honey exports have experienced a slight reduction in value since 2009. • The value of exports in the ‘other’ category has grown by 144 percent by value since 2009 New Zealand’s big point of difference in the world can be a commitment to producing GE-free organic food and fibre. This is more valuable to us than the false promise of GE. Link to the McGuinness report on GE: http://www.mcguinnessinstitute.org/ includes/download.aspx?ID=130217

Emotions run high as history made in Shield match “It just doesn’t get better than this.” That’s how Counties rugby double-centurion Alan Dawson summed up his emotions on Sunday morning as he prepared his Finn for his day’s sailing at the Waiuku Yacht Club. Sailing might be a passion, but after 202 games for Counties, and seven Ranfurly Shield challenges without success, rugby was ruling the roost around yacht club conversation after Counties trumped Hawkes Bay on Saturday night. “I was listening to the game on the radio in the shed with a couple of mates,” Alan said on Sunday, “but then the radio broke, so I went up to the pub to watch the match.” As the final whistle blew, and the realisation that, at last, Counties had the revered shield, emotions ran high at the Kentish Hotel. “People were hugging, people were crying, we were singing United We Stand (the traditional Counties team song), guys were just about kissing each other!” he laughed. ‘Dawsy’ played in the golden era of Counties rug-

by, winning the NPC in 1979, the same year a disallowed try saw them miss out on the Shield against Auckland. Then there was the agonising draw with Canterbury, a match in which a win would have seen Counties take not only the Shield, but a second NPC title. Instead, it was a draw, Canterbury kept the Shield, and Auckland slipped past both Unions to claim the NPC. But Saturday night put the world to rights. Alan had praise for the team, but also to the coaching instincts of coach Tana Umaga. “He did two things right the first was taking the boys down, (to Napier), on the bus, we always used to do that, and it brings you together as a team. Then he switched to a running firstfive when we needed to run the ball.” Alan says the choice of Baden Kerr at pivot to open the game was exactly right, keeping Counties in touch, and giving them the opportunity to chance their arm late in the game.

Alan Dawson couldn’t stop grinning on Sunday after Saturday’s win “If we had played like that from the start, we would have lost,” Alan says, adding that this season Counties have a team with great options to choose from, and adjust their style of play according to the state of the match. As for the historic first Shield defence on Sunday at Eco-Light Stadium, Alan reckons the crowd would rival that of the Lions match against Counties in his day that drew something like 28,000 to the Pukekohe stadium. “It’s all about that first de-

fence, and building from there. The Shield will bring the spirit to the team, we just need to defend it.” Come Sunday afternoon, there’ll no doubt be around 20,000-odd other Counties supporters calling for exactly that from the embankments and grandstands in Pukekohe.

Master craftsman scoops top prize Aka Aka craftsman Russell Snook scooped the Supreme Award at the gala opening night of the Franklin Arts Festival on Friday evening. Held jointly at Franklin: The Centre and the NZ Steel Gallery, the opening of the exhibition drew a large crowd to see the hundreds of artworks across a range of media, and to see the winners announced. It was an excellent night for Russell, who continued his success from the awards last year by collecting a number of other titles before being announced as the overall winner. His creation, titled Seed Pod, is crafted from kauri, forming a delicate pod, which comes apart to reveal a highly-detailed ‘seed’ inside, made from swamp totara. The piece was then mounted on a base made from driftwood from the Awhitu coastline.

Margaret Fisher is congratulated by Franklin Local Board chair Andy Baker on her win in the miniatures section. Pukekohe’s Rosemary Hood and Sandra Richardson were part of the team who produced the event. Pukekawa’s Robyn Wilkinson won a photographic award for an evocative image near the Tuakau Bridge.

CLOSING DOWN!

ALL STOCK MUST GO

BY MIDDAY SEPT 14! COME AND HAVE A LOOK, AND MAKE AN OFFER!

Town prepares for two massive events It is great to be back in the driver’s seat and a huge thank you to Vanessa (my assistant) for holding the fort and doing a fantastic job in my absence. The next three months are chaotic and lots happening in Waiuku so I thought you might like an update. The Local Board elections are upon us and I really want to stress the importance to do your homework on the candidates running and make your vote count. Look at what they stand for and what they are prepared to do to represent our area. Now we are under the Auckland Council umbrella we need to show unity, show council a strong voice and show that we care who is elected in our ward and how our town is run. Last year we had around 35% voter turnout and we need to be mindful that is what Council sees when your representatives speak and advocate on your behalf. I really believe we can reach around the 80% if we really try and get the word out. We have achieved so much in the last couple of years and we really need to show Auckland Council we want an area plan within the next three years and we don’t want to be bottom of the rung. We also only have two voices in nine at Local Board level and one voice of 21 at the top decision making table so they need to know we are a community that gives a dam. I urge you to go to the ‘Meet the candidates’ on September 22 at the Waiuku Town Hall and hear how they plan to represent our town, then VOTE. We are in full swing now preparing for the “The Blast to the Past” on the November 1. Last year was a huge amazing event and I want this years to be even bigger and better. A huge thank you once again to Lex and Karen Mills from Waiuku New World for their amazing donation of sponsorship for this

Plaudits flow as community celebrates investiture for Dame Nganeko Over 600 people gathered at the Tahuna Marae last Thursday to celebrate the formal investiture of Dame Kahurangi Nganeko Minhinnick into the Order of New Zealand. Earlier in the day, Dame Nganeko had been presented with the award by the Governor-General, Lt Gen Rt Hon Sir Jerry Mateparae, at a ceremony at Government House. Tariana Turia, Maori Party Co-Leader said “Dame Nganeko has a long track record of fighting for the rights of her whanau, hapu, iwi and tangata whenua. Her first encounter with the Crown and its process was at 11 years old when she was asked to go to the Maori Land Court by her kaumatua to become informed about land grievances of Ngati Te Ata. “From that point onward, she was encouraged to translate Te reo Maori into English for her mother and kaumatua as they navigated the system.” “She is skilled in tikanga and whakapapa, handed down by her kaumatua, and embodies these values in everything she does. Her relationship to the land and environment was something that came naturally to her as an obligation to protect for future generations.” “She descends from a line of Kaihau leaders who fought for land, environment and Maori rights. In1862, her great grandfather Ahipene Kaihau chaired the Ngati Te Ata Runanga and its purpose was to settle land matters. In 1898, Henare Kaihau (MP Western Maori 1896-1911) fought in Parliament to address raupatu and the return of confiscated lands.” Te Ururoa Flavell, Maori Party CoLeader who has family connections to her, is proud of her achievements because “in 1982 the Dame lead the Manukau Claim to the Waitangi Tribunal which triggered a landslide of environmental policy discussions on the Auckland Councils’ poor water quality manPhone: 09 235 7835

agement and the deterioration of the Manukau Harbour as an ecosystem. The undesirable response from the Auckland Council and the New Zealand Government compelled her to seek an international and indigenous understanding within the United Nations.” “From 1987-1996 she travelled to the United Nations to ensure at an international level indigenous peoples were heard by decision makers. “She is well known by many of the world’s leaders for standing up for our people in Aotearoa and for being part of the founding voices of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. “Indigenous representation at higher levels of the UN was and continues to be of great importance to her.” Dr Pita Sharples, Maori Party MP who attended the investiture ceremony, and accompanied the Dame to receive her award said “currently, there are eleven Ngati Te Ata claims at the Waitangi Tribunal waiting redress. Dame Nganeko has been a staunch activist for Maori rights for over six decades and is respected within Maori, political and international settings for her commitment to her ancestors and to future generations of Ngati Te Ata as well as future generations for indigenous peoples internationally.” “We started working together way back in the 60’s, where our shared passion for MAori rights brought us together. In 1970 she was the first recipient of the New Zealand Maori Council’s Young Maori Woman of the Year, which was recognition of her commitment to her people even back then.” “Humble, courageous, articulate and respected. Nganeko Minhinnick has a legacy to be celebrated alongside the commitment and passion of her whanau.”

Camping…

with a touch of

…Glamour The Tasman Sea ripples its way into the limitless horizon as I watch a hawk lazily riding the updrafts from the Karioitahi Cliffs. Several hundred feet below me, the last of the evening walkers are tiny dots on the mirrored black sand of the beach. In the distance, a glider drifts silently past, drawing the eye to a lone hangglider pilot hovering above the clay outcrops. To my left, a ganrled stand of pine trees invite a walk into their shadowed glades, while an inquisitive sheep, with two lambs in tow, watches with bland eyes as I pour a couple of glasses of Lake Chalice sauvignon blanc. The grill is on, awaiting a chicken breast in bacon and a prime sirloin steak, while, inside, a mushrom sauce, Lyonnaise potatoes and a fresh Meditteranean salad are already prepared. The entree of Tomato and coriander soup with garlic bread was superb, and for dessert we have Creme Brulee with creme fraiche and a berry compote. It’s recommended we eat the dessert in the outdoor bath nestled under the trees and overlooking the spectacular sunset. This is camping, but not as you know it. This is a decadent luxury that sweeps you into its arms and leaves you entranced, bewitched, and wondering whether anyone would notice if you never went back to the office again. This is the latest addition to the range of boutique leisure, adventure and pampering experiences offered by Karioitahi’s Castaways Resort complex. We are met by Castaways’ developer Gavin Shine who presents us with a buggy to drive to the secluded hilltop campsite, and a sketched map along with the usual instructions about not driving the buggy over one of the towering cliffs that perch above the beachfront. Gavin has been planning ‘Glam Camping’ for years, and constructing the sites since around Christmas. He tells us they

By Nigel Ward have been trial-running the concept for several months, fine-tuning and enhancing the experience to produce something truly special. He has succeeded. From the instant we engage drive in the buggy and head up the sheep-dotted hills of the 200-acre paddock, the cares of the world roll away with each turn of the rugged tyres. Half the fun is finding the site. We get lost once, backtrack, and have a laugh looking for the tiny arrow signs which point the way. We pause, often, for photographs of the stunning views as we climb higher, but shortly we ease our way into a glade where a rustic-looking building is nestled. First impressions were wonderful. Opening the double doors, the cosy interior is revealed. Plush carpet, a massive super-king bed and goosedown covers, coffee machine, Ipod music hub, soft spot-lighting and even a chandalier. A sheet of instructions advises us to go to the stereo, push the left button, and pour a wine. As the music wafts out, we admire the view again, check out the sunken bath with solar lights, and check on the menu for dinner. As the instructions point out, a chef is not going to appear from the trees. Accordingly, every part of dinner, dessert and breakfast has been pre-prepared and is waiting, labelled, in the fridge. Even my gastronomic abilities stretched to putting it together, and, with no preparation, a gourmet dinner was plated in no time. It’s hard to explain the feeling of total peace and relaxation brought on by this little slice of paradise on the West Coast. Whether it’s because there’s no cellphone coverage, (although if there is an emergency we can drive to the top of the hill and get reception), or whether its the

sea air, the view, the solitude, or simply the fact that the Castaways crew have thought of every little item you could possibly want, the end result is simply amazing. Gavin, who with his wife Raewyn, purchased what was a restaurant on the cliffs in 2002 and turned it into Castaways, says choosing the right spot for the camp site was one of the hardest parts of the project. It has to be secluded, yet accessible, offer views, yet not be exposed too much to the breezes from the sea. Not that high winds are a problem, the insulated, solar-powered ‘tent’ has been tested in 160km/h gales and came through with flying colours. The wind got up through the night while we were there, but the only difference we noticed was we could hear the surf crashing slightly more loudly as we enjoyed our hot drinks and chocolates. Glam Camping at Castaways, on the block of farm land behind the accomodation areas and Agave Restaurant, follows other recent activity launches including Castaways Adventures, which features archery, self drive 4x4, clay bird shooting and blocarting. Recently, the Bersantai Day Spa was born and constructed high on the hills overlooking Castaways and the Tasman Sea. Heavily influenced by a trip to Bali the Spa has extensive stone work both inside and out. Last year an out door bath and massage area was added to the day spa complimenting the extensively landscaped gardens and adding to the range of day spa treatments available. Now, Glam Camping is here, and it is a worthy addition to a facility which offers international-quality activities, weddings and functions, accomodation and fine dining. • Castaways Glam Camping is available from $430 per couple, all inclusive. For more details, or to book, see the website, www.castaways.co.nz.

Cooking up a storm at Glenbrook Happy faces, full stomachs and a sense of achievement marked Glenbrook School last week as it kicked off its campaign to win a nationwide cooking competition. The school has entered in the ‘Lets cook with Parmco competition’, which offers over $165,000 in prizes including full school kitchen equipment. Open to all schools in New Zealand, the competition attracts on-line voting for the participating schools. Glenbrook teacher Sarah Timms and a group of parents are cooking with classes each week, adults there for support only, as the youngsters do all the cooking themselves. The students cook a meal with a recipe provided by Parmco each week for three weeks. On Thursday the meal was chicken, tomato and oregano, cooked by Year 6 and 7 students, with fantastic results, and they even made a cheesecake for dessert. The entire class then sat down to a shared lunch to celebrate their cooking success. School principal Simon Akroyd says they would like people to vote for Glenbrook School, (in the 200-299 category). by going to the Parmco website and following the links or by sharing Glenbrookm School on facebook. Should they win, Simon says it would be a great boost for the school “We would use the kitchen package to install at our school to allow more children access to cooking as part of their learning. We also have our school garden where the children can grow vegetables that we can use in our cooking. “It is a great opportunity for the children to learn new skills and to participate in a great competition promoting healthy eating and team work,” he says.

$700k for Tuakau, Onewhero Waikato District Council will invest more than $700,000 in roads and street lighting for the Onewhero and Tuakau communities this financial year. The funding will cover over $450,000 worth of resealing to be completed along 14 kilometres of urban roads in Tuakau, Port Waikato and Pokeno; while $143,000 will be spent on upgrading street lighting. Port Waikato is allocated $100,000 for kerb and channelling upgrade along Mission Road and around the resealing areas. Waikato District Council General Manager Service Delivery Tim Harty says Council is placing an emphasis on improving the overall community environment to enhance the customer’s experience. “Our focus is to help create a safer environment for communities in the Waikato district and one of the ways we can do that is by improving and maintaining roads, footpaths and street lighting.” The street works programme will get underway in Council’s summer construction period between November to March 2014. Drought sees lamb numbers expected to drop by 2 million Last season’s North Island drought has dented New Zealand’s sheep and cattle numbers and this spring’s lamb crop is expected to be 2 million lambs less – down 7.7 per cent to 24.43 million head. The Beef + Lamb New Zealand Economic Service annual stock number survey confirms what many predicted, following the recent prolonged and extensive drought. The survey provides the country’s sheep and beef sector with a prediction of the productive base of livestock for the 2013-14 season. While both sheep and cattle numbers fell – 1 per cent and 1.3 per cent respectively – it is the lamb crop that reflects the drought’s impact most significantly. The export lamb slaughter

for 2013-14 is expected to be 18.6 million head, a decrease of 8.5 per cent and the export cattle slaughter is forecast to decrease 2.7 per cent to 2.2 million head in 2013-14. B+LNZ Economic Service Chief Economist, Andrew Burtt says the drought conditions affected ewe condition at mating and, consequently, scanning results were variable across the

North Island. “We’re expecting lambing percentages to be down by up to 20 percentage points in the regions worst hit by drought in the north. The South Island fared better and scanning results were down only a few percentage points – and that’s against last season, which was favourable in the south.” Overall, sheep numbers

were down 1 per cent to 30.94 million head at 30 June 2013, compared to 31.26 million a year earlier. Mr Burtt says breeding ewe numbers were also down 1 per cent overall, but the numbers in each island moved in opposite directions. “Ewe numbers in the North Island decreased by

2.7 per cent to 9.52 million, while South Island ewe numbers were almost static (+0.5%) at 10.69 million. “Hogget numbers reflected a similar pattern – back 1.3 per cent overall, but down 3.5 per cent in the north and up 1 per cent in the south.” Meanwhile, cattle num-

bers fell 1.3 per cent to 3.69 million head at 30 June 2013, from 3.73 million in 2012. “Again, the North Island figures tell the drought story, with numbers back 2.5 per cent – with particularly large decreases in East Coast and Taranaki-Manawatu – while the South Island’s cattle numbers rose 1.8 per cent.”

National Centre plan for Manukau Culture and Heritage Minister Christopher Finlayson and Auckland Mayor Len Brown on Saturday announced an agreement to investigate in association with Te Papa the development of a national centre for cultural collections, exhibitions, education and touring to be situated in Manukau, Auckland. The Minister and the Mayor say the collaboration between the government and Te Papa along with Auckland Council, Auckland War Memorial Museum, Regional Facilities Auckland and Auckland Art Gallery would create an innovative cultural hub at the heart of New Zealand’s most culturally diverse and fastest growing region. “The centre would improve the accessibility of our national treasures and exhibitions to the community, researchers and other institutions,” says Chris Finlayson. “There are enormous educational opportunities to connect our nation’s treasures and stories with pre-school to tertiary students, and the learning audience beyond.” Te Papa Chief Executive Michael Houlihan says the museum has been exploring ways to share the nation’s collections with communities locally and nationally. “The Centre would create a hub for Te

Papa working alongside the wider museum, arts and research sector. It would present an opportunity for local, regional and national communities to bring together the very best that Auckland and the nation has to offer in terms of art, science, heritage and culture. By working with others, Te Papa will be able to make the experience and collections available to more communities,” said Mr Houlihan. The proposed facility would provide a space for exhibitions, an education centre and collections. The purpose-built facility would also house parts of the national collections which are being moved out of storage in Wellington to mitigate the risk of natural hazards like earthquakes. Its activities would span events, community outreach, research and scholarship, exhibitions, and provide a hub so national and regional collections could be toured around New Zealand. A working group of partners will commence development of the concept for this state-of-the-art collection and interactive learning space, and will engage with communities and stakeholders during this process.

Call for government-led home-building plan The rapid rise in house prices in Auckland in the past year, even as the median family income in the region fell, shows that the current Government’s housing policies are failing New Zealanders, Green Party Co-leader Metiria Turei has said. Figures released by Quotable Value show that Auckland house prices are up 13.1% in the past year and 34.6% since the last market trough in March 2009. That compares with a 1% decrease in the median family income in Auckland in the past year and an 8% increase since 2009. House prices in Auckland continued to accelerate in the last month despite the Reserve Bank’s announcement of the introduction of Loan-to-Value Ratios. “The Auckland property

bubble is a threat to the economy and a barrier to families buying their own home. We need policies that will stabilise the housing market and ensure more affordable homes are built for young families,” she said. “More sprawl won’t fix that problem; a government-led building programme is the solution. “Everyone benefits from a stable housing market. It gives families buying their home greater certainty over what their home will be worth in the future. That’s preferable to the current boom-bust cycle where home-buying can be a gamble and homeowners face losing equity through no fault of their own if they buy a house at the wrong time. “A more stable market will also be less attractive to

speculative investors, freeing up capital for the productive economy. “The Greens believe that the government has a central role to play in fixing the housing market. We need a government-led affordable home-building programme, coupled with our Progressive Ownership plan that gives young families a pathway to home ownership. We need a capital gains tax (excluding the family home) and restrictions on overseas investment in residential properties so that families have a fair shot at buying a home without being out-bid by speculators. “These policies will protect Kiwi families from the boom-bust housing cycle and allow more young families to get on the housing ladder,” said Mrs Turei.

Kane Needham and Colin Saunderson share a laugh as they check out a group of fine local calves at a Waiuku property.

He might have been the face of local livestock representation for over half a century, but Waiuku’s Colin Saunderson is showing no signs of slowing down. In fact, he’s not only providing personal service and advice to the region’s farming community, but also finding the time to pass on his experience to another local, Trainee Livestock Representative Kane Needham. Colin is the Waiuku region’s Livestock Representative for PGG Wrightson, a leading provider to the agricultural sector in New Zealand and internationally, a company which traces its roots back to the mid-1800s. While having no intentions of hanging up his cattle stick just yet, Colin is working with trainee Kane and introducing him to the local farming community. Kane, who grew up in Pukekohe and played for the Pukekohe Rugby Club until a serious neck injury in 2008, says he is enjoying the Colin was made the sub-branch manager of what was Dalchallenges of the livestock industry, and working with the gety Loan, in Waiuku. yards in Waiuku and had to be hunted, and eventually shot, by the local police! Dalgety became Dalgety Crown, then Wrightson Dalgety, and then, eight years ago, became PGG Wrightson, and Colin continued managing stock sales and purchases for the district’s farming community. Some of those sales today are for the children, and even grandchildren of some of the old farming families of the Waiuku region. Colin starts to run through some of the names, then laughs that he’d better not name anyone because he’s bound to leave someone out and then he’d never hear the end of it! Asked what the biggest changes have been over the years, Colin says it’s the paperwork, the compliance requirements and the OSH regulations, which have added hour upon hour to the farmers’ work days. “Stock numbers have dropped overall in the saleyards, as farms have changed usage, and more housing has taken up farmland, plus we’ve had a change in the type of sales as well, with a lot more small sales from people with lifestyle blocks.” The lifestyle block sector has also introduced another style of purchaser - the lady with a couple of acres who wants a ‘pretty’ cow for the farm. Kane and Colin agree that it’s been surprising how often a good looking animal has gone for well over the average sale price, as purchasers look to buy for aesthetic, rather than commercial reasons. “Apart from that though, farming has stayed farming,” Colin says. “The business is still what it always has been; looking after the farmers, understanding their business and maintaining that personal contact.” After 55 years with livestock, Colin Saunderson pretty much seen it all, but he’s got no intentions of slowing down just yet. • Contact Colin on 0274 936 524 or 09 235 8545 • Contact Kane on 027 839 3612 or 09 237 2011

The exciting new one-make Toyota TR 86 Championship series has released its inaugural calendar, and the category’s first season will include one round with the New Zealand Racing Drivers’ League at its Hampton Downs event on May 3 and 4, 2014. League events are open to any class which would like an extra date in their championship calendar, or need dates at a choice of circuits to form a basis for their own series. “It’s really great news for the League in its first year to be able to host the Toyota TR86s and there’s no question they will be a big draw card for the event next season,” said League co-organiser Chris Watson. “They have a varied and interesting calendar that will give variety to the drivers and the teams and that’s great news for motorsport. That Hampton Downs meeting is shaping up to be quite an event, with Toyotas, NZ Sports Cars, Motul Honda Cup, the RRE rotary class, Superkarts, 2K Cup and Formula Ford already on the starting line-up and plenty of interest from other categories. Our motto for the League is a simple one – It’s Just Racing – and these great little cars will be a big hit in that environment.” The TR 86 race car build programme is well advanced with all 20 cars being assembled at Toyota Racing’s Mount Wellington facilities. The cars will be delivered to their new owners in a handover at the Manfeild circuit near Feilding on the October 10 at the first official test day. The televised seven-round series will start at the Highlands Motorsport

Park circuit at Cromwell in November before making its way north. Granted official championship status in its inaugural year, the series has recently confirmed a $20,000 cash prize for its inaugural season. The League kicks off with the first of its four events over the next season with a massive fixture at Hampton Downs on September 28 and 29 that will see the BNT V8 SuperTourers lend its considerable weight to the launch event with the first round of its endurance series. Manfeild (March 1 and 2 2013), Taupo (April 5 and 6) and the finale at Hampton Downs on May 3 and 4 complete the schedule.

Bike prize for ponies Superb drive for Manuell Hot on the heels of an announcement that Equidays at Mystery Creek will be running their first horse Derby at the October event, organisers have announced a Pony Derby sponsored by Honda Motorcycles. On Sunday 20 October, the concluding day of Equidays, the Honda Pony Derby will feature 50 of New Zealand’s top riders, aged 16 years and under, with their ponies competing against each other over a one kilometre course. Derby events are rare on the New Zealand equine calendar so organisers have had a great response from riders and are expecting huge excitement amongst spectators too. A spokesperson for Blue Wing Honda said Honda Motorcycles is proud to be the principal sponsor of the inaugural Pony Derby. “The Pony Derby is a great addition to Equidays events. This event will be fun for both competitors and spectators, and those competing will have the opportunity to win a fantastic Honda CRF farm bike.” First place will win a CRF230F valued at $7399, (pictured inset), second place wins a CRF150F valued at $5999, and third place will win a CRF100F valued at $4499. The derby is a mix between show jumps and natural styled fences and is set to test the riders in both skill and agility.

M3 team member and ORIX Team Racing driver Paul Manuell, a stalwart of New Zealand V8 Touring car racing used all his experience and a cool head by finishing in fourth position after starting 15th in Sundays 28 lap feature race at round four of the V8 Supertourer Championship in Taupo. Taupo bought on its fair share of challenges for Paul and the ORIX Racing Team. Practice and qualifying deemed tough for Paul as he sat in 13th position for race one and 12th for race two. Race one and two netted results of 13th and 12th where identifying the ultimate set up proved to be a challenge. The M3 Racing team were victorious with Greg Murphy being crowned the V8 Supertourer Sprint Series title. Moving into the Enduro phase of the championship, Paul now sits in 8th position overall, Richard Moore in 6th and Greg Murphy still in 1st going into the next round at Hampton Downs 28th/29th of September.

Warning over rail crossings as electric goes live A safety campaign has been launched this week warning Aucklanders they won’t get a second chance if they get too close to the overhead wires which will power the city’s new electric trains. The first of Auckland’s new electric trains has now arrived in Auckland. Over the coming months these will be tested around the network in preparation for train services in 2014. The overhead wires are now live 24/7 and potentially deadly to anyone who may get too close or come into contact with them, says KiwiRail Project Management Office General Manager Murray Hood. “As with ordinary power lines, the overhead power system on the rail network is built so that people doing ordinary things near them are perfectly safe,” said Mr Hood. “Only reckless or mischievous behaviour poses a dan-

“Invariably, these have all involved young men trespassing on the rail corridor and getting too close to the overhead wires. At best those that survived received serious burns.” ger. “Sadly, experience both here in New Zealand and overseas shows that some people ignore all safety advice and take risks with serious and usually fatal results.” The overhead wires that will power the trains carry 25,000 volts, which is 100 times more powerful than that used in homes. “You do not even need to touch these wires to be electrocuted - electricity this powerful can arc or jump across gaps so it is important to keep away and make sure anything you are carrying is also well clear,” said Mr Hood. “So it is critical that the public must treat these lines as live and extremely dan-

gerous at all times.” An awareness campaign to get this message out has been developed by KiwiRail, Auckland Transport and Transdev – the three organisations which deliver commuter rail services in Auckland. Launched this week the campaign includes billboard, radio and newspaper advertising as well as a video available on YouTube and Facebook. A link to the video can be found on the KiwiRail website – www.kiwirail.co.nz. “Transdev is tremendously excited about this new era for Auckland rail but it’s vitally important that everyone who travels on or near the train tracks heeds these

important warnings about electrified overhead wires,” said Transdev’s Electrification Programme Lead Mike Yeoman. “You can help us share the safety message. “We encourage parents to talk to their children about staying well clear of the overhead wires and taking care around trains and stations, the rail network is no place to play.” There have been several incidents on the electrified section of the North Island Main Trunk railway line that runs between Hamilton and Palmerston North in recent years. “Invariably, these have all involved young men trespassing on the rail corridor and getting too close to the overhead wires. “At best those that survived received serious burns,” said Mr Hood. In 2003 a young male trespasser died after climbing

Take a passenger or risk a fine on bypass lane The NZ Transport Agency is reminding drivers to take care at the Papakura interchange on Auckland’s Southern Motorway (State Highway 1), and the re-opening of the T2 bypass lane has come with a warning about the conditions of use. Two new sets of traffic signals located at the on and off-ramps on the interchange have been switched on and the Transport Agency’s Highways Manager Tommy Parker says they make it safer

to get on and off the motorway. “This is a significant change for drivers using the interchange who previously relied on the give way rule. The signals will take some time to get used to and drivers need to take extra care.” The T2 bypass lane, which had been closed over the past two weeks for traffic monitoring purposes, has been reopened. We’ll be analysing the data collected during the closure to see how the recent changes at Papakura have

affected the motorway. “Drivers can only use the T2 lane if they have one or more passengers in the car – it’s a priority lane for their benefit and people who do not comply run the risk of a fine,” Mr Parker says. The $35M upgrade of the interchange is part of a wider Transport Agency programme of works it is accelerating to improve journey times along the Southern Motorway between Papakura and Manukau.

Gains in vehicle sales continue in August The new and used import sectors of the vehicle sales industry continued their strong parallel run of success into August, with appreciable gains recorded across the board. Successive months of improving sales in all sectors continue to support claims that vehicle sales are helping lead the economic recovery. Sales of 8,648 used import cars were up 2,027 units (31 percent) compared to August 2012. For the year to date, used imported car sales are sharply up – 12,997 units (26 percent). The top brand for used import cars was Toyota with 2,105 units (24 percent market share), followed by Nissan with 1,595 units (18 percent share) and Mazda with 1,514 units (17 percent share). In terms of individual used import car models, Mazda Demio proved most popular with 401 units sold, followed by Nissan Tiida with 396 units sold and Mazda Axela with sales of 383 units. Used import commercial vehicles enjoyed their second strongest month of the year so far. Sales of 546 units Phone: 09 235 7835

“For the year to date, used imported car sales are sharply up – 12,997 units (26 percent). ” were 207 units (61 percent) ahead of August 2012. Year to date, used import commercials are up an impressive 1,533 units (68 percent). MTA spokesman Ian Stronach said “There’s a feeling in the trade that this recovery can be sustained. “After what has been a lengthy period of success by automotive trade standards, no one’s quite game to say if they can see any end to this growth in sight. “With around 33 percent of the national light fleet aged between 14 and 19 years, there is still a considerable amount of replacement activity waiting ahead for the industry.” New car sales of 6,828 units were up 869 units (14 percent) compared to August 2012. For the year to date, new car sales are up 3,066 units (6 percent). The top selling new car model for the month was again the Toyota Corolla with 328 sales, followed by

Holden Cruze with 271 sales. Benefitting from the recent launch of its new model, Holden Commodore came in third with sales of 247 units. The new commercial vehicle market remained strong as well. 2,602 units sold was 386 units (17 percent) up over August 2012. For the year to date, new commercial vehicle sales are up 3,915 units (24 percent). The top selling new commercial model and New Zealand’s most popular model overall was the Ford Ranger with 392 sales, followed by Toyota Hilux with 376 sales and Nissan Navara on 290 sales. Stronach said “Commercial vehicles continue to lead the way, showing that the economic recovery is continuing. “Business vehicles are never purchased on a whim, they’re a sizeable investment, so there is obviously ongoing confidence that things will only get stronger in the coming months.”

On road motorcycles continued their recent resurgence, with 503 sales, 102 units (25 percent) ahead of August 2012. For the year to date, sales are now ahead of last year by 808 units (23 percent). Suzuki took top spot with 84 sales (17 percent market share), followed by Honda with 64 units (13 percent) and Harley Davidson on 36 units (7 percent).

on top of a stationary train in a freight yard in Hamilton. And in 2007 another trespasser received serious burns, again after trespassing in the same area. The wires have meant the introduction of height restrictions at the 31 level crossings on Auckland roads within the electrified area. ] However, most road users will not be affected by these height restrictions, as most vehicles and loads would

not exceed them. Most level crossings will have a height restriction of five metres, however 11 crossings will be lower at 4.25 metres. Roadside signs will warn of the presence of wires and display the height restriction at each level crossing. Motorists with loads exceeding the height restrictions will need to apply to KiwiRail for written permission to use a level crossing.

baking, paintball target course, silent auctions, key in the padlock with a Pandora bracelet as a prize, raffles including an iPad, face painting and pony rides happening on the day. Another new activity this year is cheekily being named the ‘Dad’ Challenge, however this will be open to anybody aged over sixteen, and will involve dexterity, concentration, skill, confidence and a determination to try to win The Golden Hammer trophy and prize packs from Mitre 10 and Carters. Ramarama School Calf Club is on Saturday 21st September 2013, with the animal judging starting at 8.30am and stalls will be open from 9.30am to 1pm.

Team readies for historic first Shield defence this Sunday and were rewarded down the other end when halfback August Pulu latched onto a kick and linked up with Sherwin Stowers. The classy fullback showed his pace and skill to get around the attempted tackle of Ihaia West to dive over in the corner to silence the home crowd. It didn’t take long for the hosts to hit back as the Hawke’s Bay fullback Gillies Kaka scampered down the touch line from a turnover from the breakdown before offloading to wing Telusa Veainu. In the end Veainu provided the final pass to Kaka to go in for the try and was later confirmed by the TMO as Hawke’s Bay narrowed Counties early margin. However, both goal kickers would continue to trade

penalties as the Magpies went into halftime with a slim 16-14 lead. The livewire Stowers was continuing to cause the Magpies defence trouble weaving in and out on attack and eventually won a penalty for Kerr to slot and retake the lead in the second half. Hawkes Bat were not to be outdone, and stormed back with a try to take a four point lead, with the conversion missed. Counties had a penalty opporunity to close the gap to a point, but opted for a scrum and a crucial dropped pass saw Hawkes Bay break away. Another penalty to Hawkes Bay and suddenly the lead was out to seven points with just 12 minutes to go, meaning the Steeler had to score twice. But the Steelers were by no means finished, scor-

ing a try just two minutes later to close the gap to two points, and although the conversion was missed, the side knew a draw would never be enough anyway. Then, the defining moment, as another Steelers attack saw Reidy over for the five points out wide - the conversion was missed and the red, white and blacks just had to hold on for four desperate minutes. Those watching the game on television were stunned when Counties kicked the ball out with time still left on the clock, but the referee blew for full time, and, for the first time in the union’s history, the Shield belonged to Counties. The team will be all out to defend it at Pukekohe’s Eco-Light Stadium against Taranaki this Sunday.

Solid draw concludes season for Waiuku Premiers Waiuku AFC’s premiers finished the 2013 season with a nil all draw away against Division Two champions Western Springs, concluding a season in which they outperformed many sides in the second round. Springs, coached by NZ U23 and All White Assistant Coach Neil Emblem have seen a dramatic turnaround in the last year. Seddon Park has recently been redeveloped with artificial turf and lights and along with Emblem the arrival of quality players from the Auckland area have progressed the club to the

first division. Playing against the likes of ASB Premiership striker Chris Bale (Auckland City), midfielder James Debenham (Waitakere United) and a host of other players traditionally from the Lotto Premiership Division Waiuku did well to prevent Western Springs from scoring with good speed and physicality shown by centre backs Elliot Crean and Mitch Thomasen. Waiuku were without a number of regular first team players through injury and suspension and played Jerry Hubbard as a lone striker. Hubbard reg-

Red-letter day for Counties Rugby In a historic moment in Counties Manukau rugby, the Steelers have become Ranfurly Shield holders for the very first time in their proud history. The Steelers left it late but two late tries allowed the visitors to lift the famous log of wood over the Hawke’s Bay Magpies 27-24 in front of a packed McLean Park crowd in Napier. A full strength Counties side brushed aside the narrow loss to Auckland mid week as they displayed a courageous effort and create history. After a long opening sequence both teams showed glimpses of brilliance in attack as the visiting Steelers earned the game’s first points through first five Baden Kerr. Merchant Navy Day marked in Waiuku, Auckland, and around the world Commemorative events were held on the 3rd September in Britain and the Commonwealth countries to mark Merchant Navy Day 2013 The day was chosen as being the first day of World War two and the sinking of the first ship, officially recognised in New Zealand for the first time in 2010. That first ship struck was the Athenia which had just left Liverpool in the evening of the 3rd September 1939 carrying 1,103 civilians and which was sighted and sunk with two torpedoes fired from the German U boat U30. Thus began a war at sea which claimed 3,500 ships, of which 2916 were sunk by submarine, and the loss of almost 60,000 merchant navy seaman of whom over 120 were New Zealanders - two as young as 14 years of age. 175 Royal Navy ships and 30,000 German naval seamen also perished along with 783 of their submarines. The reason for this seaborne conflict which lasted 2074 days was the need to supply 1,000,000 tonnes of food supplies per month supplied form the USA required to feed British residents. These Merchant Navy seafarers were civilians who generally did not wear a uniform and whose ships were either unarmed or had maybe one gun mounted generally on the after deck. King George V decreed that they would all be issued with a MN lapel badge to signify that they were serving in the Merchant Navy as they were considered by some as cowards and treated as such. In London next to the Tower there is a very large garden based memorial to those who died and whose names are listed under the ship’s name on whom they were serving when they died. So what about New Zealand? this year’s services were held in Wellington, Auckland and Nelson with smaller centres like Waiuku marking it in a suitable way with the flying

of the New Zealand Red Ensign (Merchant Navy)alongside the New Zealand flag at the cenotaph. The Wellington service was held at the Great Hall of Massey University ion Buckle street and which was attended by Ambassadors from Great Britain,Canada, Russia, South Africa, Germany and India. New Zealand Government and opposition ministers also attended together with representatives from the Merchant Navy, Maritime Union, Returned Servicemans Association, shipping fraternities and armed forces. Sea Cadets representing the youth of New Zealand also attended Wreaths were placed at the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior by eleven representatives of the various groups, diplomatic and political parties present. In Auckland the Voyager Maritime Museum hosted 73 members of various Maritime groups, armed services and seafarers both past and present in the function centre which was decorated with ships and shipping company flags at the centre of which was a very large New Zealand Red Ensign. Those present were welcomed by the Museum and then the service was conducted by Chaplain David Millar, of the Auckland International Seafarers Centre aided by Sister Joan Hardman of the Apostleship of the Sea,Capt Ted Ewbank, Tony Payne who led the reciting of Ode, and a suitably attired Scottish piper and seafarer John Downie who played appropriate music. The service concluded with the laying of four wreaths by the Maritime Museum staff, Royal New Zealand Navy staff, Auckland

Master Mariners and the London and New Zealand Merchant Navy Associations. At noon the following day, September 4th, a Navy RIB arrived at the Museum pontoon to pick up the wreaths, Chaplain David Millar, Carol Forsyth, vessel Manager from the Museum and former Merchant Navy Officer Ron Bird. The RIB proceeded to a position half way between Rangoitoto Island and Takapuna beach where a brief committal service was held before the wreaths were placed into the sea. After photographs were taken and a suitable time had elapsed, the wreaths were then stripped of the flowers which were scattered on the waves and the plastic placed on board the RIB for disposal ashore. In Waiuku the New Zealand Flag was hoisted on one flag pole whilst the New Zealand Red Ensign was hoisted on the adjacent one at the Cenotaph and were left to fly until 1745hrs which was sunset and in keeping with flag protocol. They were lowered by Andrew Russ of the Waiuku Returned Servicemans Association and Ron Bird, (pictured above, inset). a former Merchant Navy Officer whose older brother was also at sea as an Officer in the English Merchant Navy during World war Two. Ron’s vessel, the SSD Paparoa was build in 1943 and was originally fitted with a gun on the poop deckhouse which had been removed when he served on her in the 1960s. Her large ships bell is now held by the Bucklands Beach Sea Scouts in Auckland having being presented to them in 1972 and her flag is in the Voyager Maritime Museum.

A major new, multi-party project aimed at better protecting the health and productivity of the Hauraki Gulf (Tikapa Moana/Te Moananui a Toi) has been officially launched tonight in Auckland. The two-year project known as Sea Change - involving the development of a Hauraki Gulf Marine Spatial Plan – is a partnership involving mana whenua and statutory agencies Auckland Council, Waikato Regional Council, the Hauraki Gulf Forum, the Department of Conservation, and the Ministry for Primary Industries. It will involve collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders and input from the public. The Sea Change plan – to be delivered in 2015 – will confirm the various problems in the 1.2 million hectare Hauraki Gulf Marine Park area and solutions to them. Plan recommendations are due be integrated into the policies and processes of various councils and agencies with a view to safeguarding the Gulf’s core cultural, environmental, social and economic values. The Sea Change project steering group co-chairs, mana whenua representative Paul Majurey and Auckland councillor Penny Webster, said the partners are committed to working together effectively to better safeguard the Gulf’s health and manage it

Post

sustainably. “The Hauraki Gulf is an extremely precious taonga, highly valued by all people for a wide range of cultural, environmental, social and economic reasons. “For example, it is heavily used for recreation and generates more than $2.7 billion in economic activity each year,” Cr Webster and Mr Majurey said. “But the Gulf’s health is deteriorating in a variety of ways due to various pressures on its use and land use in areas near the coast. Sea Change – the first project of its kind in New Zealand – will identify what we need to do to better safeguard its future.” Waikato Regional Council chairman Peter Buckley said his council felt it was essential to be working in collaboration with Auckland, local Waikato councils, agencies and mana whenua on Sea Change. “The problems we face in the Gulf are too big for us to be working in isolation. Taking a joined up approach to solutions is clearly the best way to go. The parts of the Gulf in our region are obviously a very major asset for us in many respects.” Hauraki Gulf Forum chair John Tregidga welcomed the Sea Change initiative: “The Hauraki Gulf Forum’s triennial state of the environment reports and recent stock take

PAGE 26 TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2013

of economic activity show there are issues and opportunities not being addressed through traditional policy and planning approaches. Inviting the Gulf’s communities and users to prepare the plan will help generate new approaches and solutions, in accordance with the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park Act.” The project steering group (PSG), made up of partner representatives, has already held its first meeting. This group will oversee the Sea Change plan, which will be developed through a process involving project staff, a Stakeholder Working Group and the PSG itself. The PSG will ultimately recommend the plan to relevant councils and agencies for implementation through their activities. Sea Change partners are also finalising processes to ensure the public has a say over the plan’s development. It is expected public input will be sought from the middle of next year. Current external costs are budgeted at around $1.8 million, split roughly 50/50 between the Auckland and Waikato Regional councils. Other central Government funding is also expected. Final details of the approximately $2 million costs are still being finalised. Phone: 09 235 7835
