A forthcoming movie about the impact on New Zealand families from the Gallipoli landings has a wealth of Waiuku connections. The old steam tug River Queen, pictured above, has been refitted by local individuals and businesses to look like a steam picket of the kind used to ferry soldiers to the Gallipoli beaches. The tug, with a new superstructure, is being filmed in the movie north of Auckland, with a number of young locals playing the part of soldiers in the film.
105th birthday celebration for Beryl Baguley

Film-makers sent the Waiuku Museum Maritime Section a photograph of one of the original steam pickets, (pictured right), and one of the locals who has been instrumental in developing the replica craft is Arthur Buckland, pictured above at the helm of the craft, with Kennedy Anderson as bowman. In an eerie coincidence, Arthur’s Great Uncle is pictured in the original 1915 Imperial War Museum image of survivors from a sunken ship at Gallipoli, and is circled in the image.
The Waiuku Cosmopolitan Club hosted a very special birthday party yesterday, as member of the local senior citizens club celebrated the 105th birthday for member Beryl Baguley. Beryl, looking as sprightly as ever, cut her birthday cake and made a brisk speech about the importance of supporting clubs and being a part of an organisation before those attending sang ‘For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow’ to warm applause. Although Beryl’s birthday was momentous in itself, she was made famous some years ago, when she was filmed for television with her late twin sister, Matilda, the pair at the time known as among the oldest living twins in the world. The twins were born in Auckland in 1909, and Beryl didn’t end up in the Waiuku region until shortly before the Second World War, when she moved to Aka Aka with her husband Johnny. The outbreak of war saw Johnny drafted into the army, and then seconded back to Franklin, where he worked in the Otaua Cheese Factory.
Beryl recalls one of her most vivid memories of those days as living in huts behind the factory which were three simple rooms, with a kitchen in the middle, and she says they were incredibly hot. The buildings were roofed with black polythene, not tin, and absorbed the full heat of the day. When the war ended the couple went milking for two years on one of the Muir family farms, then had a 10-year spell milking on Albert Holmes’ property on Misa Road, starting out sharemilking and later going halves with their own herd. Beryl has long had an interest in local bowls, of which she is a life member, and Aka Aka, then the Otaua Country Women’s Institute. She was a member of one or other of the local institutes up until the last few years, when the Waiuku Institute went into recess. The family remained farming until 1976 when they purchased a Sandspit Road property where Beryl lives today, following Johnny’s passing in 1991.

VIEWS & OPINIONS 18 Bowen Street, Waiuku Ph: 09 235 7835 | Fax: 09 235 7834 Email: info@thepostnewspaper.co.nz Auckland Council’s announcement this week that it will be contacting iwi on behalf of residents with resource consent applications, (see story page 3), is another indication of the ill-conceived and slapshod way in which the clauses were inserted into the Unitary Plan in the first place. Council’s offhand suggestion that the requirements have been in place for many years and have only become an issue because of the Council’s ‘increased protection’ for cultural sites is a smokescreen for the fact that just a matter of a couple of weeks before those parts of the plan became law, around 3000 new ‘significant sites’ were added to the plan. And while consultation over those areas became law immediately, requiring additional expense for landowners which was not previously required, council is only now trying to work out how to actually manage it. Enquiries with council representatives suggest there is no appeal process as to the validity of some of these sites of significance. Council is admitting it doesn’t know which iwi are required to be consulted over some areas. Council has no formal cost structures in place for people caught up in this process, and, almost six months after the Cultural Impact Assessments were imposed on thousands of Auckland residents, Council is admitting there is no actual plan in place for how iwi deal with applications. Considering councillors themselves were unaware of the scale of these changes, one can only assume staff acted unilaterally to add these sites in. So now we have council scrambling to make it look like they know what they are doing. Clearly they don’t. As ratepayers, we deserve better.

that broader economy-wide effects ‘arise principally from the stimulatory effect of the construction activity’. The Ministry for Primary Industry outlook may forecast a global demand for primary sector exports worth $36.4 billion, but it will be ordinary New Zealanders paying the price for a damaged environment. Recently Otago Regional Council (ORC) water quality sampling found high levels of E. coli (an indicator of faecal contamination) at more than five times the safe level for human health in Otago’s Upper Taieri River. More intensive farming and weak rules increases the risk of more faecal contamination of our rivers, making them unsafe for swimming as is currently happening. This means the river beside our best known cycle trail, the Central Otago Rail Trail, is too polluted to swim in, damaging our clean green image and tourism, our second largest export industry. Tourism is one of New Zealand’s biggest export industries, earning $9.8 billion or 16.1% of New Zealand’s foreign exchange earnings (year ended March 2013). The Greens support a Government that is smart with the way it manages the environment as the environment underpins a healthy economy and a healthy society. In response to Dr Hutchison’s advertorial last week on ‘Primary Sector Exports Booming’, the Greens do not oppose policies that support a healthy Primary Sector. What we support and propose are policies that do not compromise the environment which our primary sector and second largest export sector - tourism - rely on. Treasury states that “The primary sector’s relationship with the environment will become increasingly important.” Under a National led government this relationship has deteriorated and is set to become worse with a weakened RMA. The latest Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP) leak proves the National Government is not committed to protecting our environment. Secret details of the TPP have been leaked showing that New Zealand’s position is weak on environmental issues. Yet, National want to progress with this free trade deal. There is a double standard with weak enforcement measures for breaching environmental rules, but strong enforcement measures in areas like mining and copyright. According to Treasury the rates of return for Primary Growth Partnership initiatives like the large-scale irrigation projects are low to average at best. Treasury says that the ‘farm gate analysis indicates that irrigating the proposed areas would (in aggregate) constitute a loss-making investment’ and

Quote of the week! Leadership is solving problems. The day soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you have stopped leading them. They have either lost confidence that you can help or concluded you do not care. Either case is a failure of leadership. - Colin Powell

His Word - The Fruit of the Spirit - Joy
Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

These will be heard by the Auckland Unitary Plan Independent Hearings Panel. “The next step in the process is to listen to what Aucklanders have to say through the submissions and hearings process.” If applicants have any questions they are advised to call the resource consents team on 09 301 0101.

Other steps being taken to streamline the process include: • Working with iwi to refine maps covering areas of interest, so it is clearer which iwi have a specific interest in individual applications • Establishing clearer guidelines for when a CIA is required • Working with iwi on ways to streamline the process • Iwi are also discussing themselves how they can provide greater certainty for applicants Submissions on the proposed plan closed

ues – and for the rules to be workable. “We’re working closely with iwi to find ways to get the right balance: providing protection, while easing the impact on landowners. “Providing a facilitator to contact iwi on applicants’ behalf is just one of the steps we can take to help make the process more straightforward.” Dr Blakeley says the outcome of a CIA is not an approval of an application, it is simply advice that needs to be taken into account by the council, who makes the decision on a consent application. The Proposed Auckland Unitary Plan requires applicants to ask iwi whether a CIA is needed if their consent has an environmental impact (such as discharges to air or water) that may have an adverse impact on Mana Whenua values, or if it is in an area that has a site of significance or value to Mana Whenua, based on archaeological records.

Auckland Council will contact iwi on behalf of applicants whose resource consents may need a Cultural Impact Assessment (CIA), which will, it says, remove one of the key areas of concern for people impacted by new provisions in the Proposed Auckland Unitary Plan. This step is one of a number of moves the council is making to help applicants, following discussions over recent months with iwi. While the requirement for CIAs has been around for many years, the council’s Chief Planning Officer Roger Blakeley says increased protection for Auckland’s cultural heritage and values means more people are now likely to need them. This protection was called for during feedback on the draft Auckland Unitary Plan and the rules came into effect when the plan was notified on 30 September 2013. Dr Blakeley says: “It is important for Auckland to protect its cultural heritage and val-

ing on-farm productivity. Clover root weevil is being reported across the country as nodules on clover roots fix nitrogen from the atmosphere and provide a ‘free’ form of nitrogen fertiliser. Weevils feeding on them disturb the nitrogen fixing with subsequent damage to foliage and pasture quality. “Many farmers may be putting slower pasture or animal growth rates down to lack of sunshine and overcast weather given the mixed summer we have had. “However clover root weevil may also be an issue on their properties and is often a hidden cause of poor pasture productivity,” says Ballance Agri-Nutrients Research and Development Manager Warwick Catto. A U-shaped notching in clover leaves signals infestation and spells trouble. This is especially so with the loss of clover significantly reducing potential lamb growth rates. Applying nitrogen fertiliser can compensate for weevil damage, though Mr Catto says the amount needed will vary with soil type, fertility and climate.

OBITUARY - SAM SHACKLETON • JANUARY 27, 1940 - SEPTEMBER 10, 2013
Sporting leader will be missed A private family ashes committal service to be held in the next couple of weeks marks a final farewell for one of Waiuku’s most wellknown sportsmen and local identities. Sam Shackleton passed away in September last year, after a brave battle with cancer, and it is perhaps appropriate that his committal service occurs as the Waiuku Yacht Club commemorated its 60th anniversary this year. Sam started his sailing life with close friends as a youngster, and after years of mucking around in dinghies, he was part of the group that opened the first season of the Waiuku club in 1953. As the club grew, so did Sam’s interest in sailing, and he was to campaign successfully in Q-class yachts, the Flying Dutchman Olympic class, Zephyrs and Lasers. He went on to win an Auckland Championship in the Zephyr, but it is perhaps as a office-bearer with the club that he made his greatest mark, matching his consummate sailing ability with a dedication and desire to support his club as an administrator. He joined a group of parents building a fleet of Optimists for the younger sailors, something which has been built on over the years as the Waiuku club boasts a hugely successful Learn to Sail programme. His efforts for yachting were recognised by his receipt of an Honour Award for Outstanding Services to Yachting in 1988.
And yet while yachting played a huge part in his life, it was only a fraction of the support he provided to the local sporting community, serving as president and late a Life Member of the Waiuku Junior Boys club. Serving on the Counties Junior Management Board for a number of years, he also had a great involvement with the senior club, coaching the Under-21s for two years, and later the premier side. He played his senior rugby for Waiuku and also for the Eden Club in Auckland, where he was working at the time. In later life his sporting interests turned to motoring, as he joined the Auckland Mustang Owners Club, and later serving as president of that organisation. Sam and his wife Judi were well-known in the club and the wider motoring fraternity, participating in rallies with their trophy-winning 1973 Q Code Mach 1. Sam was also a regular judge of Auckland and National convention competitions. While he will always be treasured and remembered by his family and his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, there are also many local and regional sporting organisations that are the poorer for his loss. An avid athlete, a superb sailor, and a true committee man with a passion for his clubs and his township, Sam Shackleton passed away on September 10, 2013, aged 73.

Bombay students having a wheely good time AWARD A reader writes:
Very often the most deserving people are taken for granted because we never stop to reflect on just much they do. I would like to nominate Claire Doig from the Flight Centre as the recipient of this week’s WOW award. Claire is never too busy to greet all and sundry who cross the threshold of the Flight Centre, with a warm and genuine smile. Her enthusiasm when dealing with clients is extremely contagious, and without fail she will always go the extra mile to ensure the best deal for people wishing to travel. Going the extra mile is great but calling in at the client’s home to finalise the ticket before the deadline is exceptional. Keep up the good work Claire – you are a star and a great asset to both Waiuku and the Flight Centre. Well done!

Bombay School has started the 2014 school year with a splash. Firstly, the school welcomed new principal Paul Petersen who has moved from Carlton School in Wanganui. For five weeks he has managed to keep his head above water unlike the children who have been under the water a lot. They have been swimming daily to practise their water skills and train for the annual swimming sports events. The Junior School had their swimming sports last Thursday with some excellent results. The trophy for the fastest boy (freestyle)was awarded to Brock Murphy and the fastest girl trophy to Sasha Nichol. The school is looking forward to the Middle and Senior school students competing at their swimming sports which will be held at the Tuakau pools. The four school houses - Kea, Kiwi, Tui, and Kaka are working hard on their chants, and competition between the houses is fierce. Rob Young, the school caretaker, has initiated an exciting activity for the students. Rob purchased unicycles for his family for Christmas and thought the Bombay School children might enjoy the many benefits of learning to ride them
as well. Rob was prepared to teach them to ride. It was decided the best place to learn to ride the unicycles was the school’s top court because it had a fence that the children could hold onto with one hand while getting used to sitting and balancing on a one wheel cycle. As soon as the children felt brave enough, they let go of the fence! The average estimated time to learn to ride a unicycle is fifteen hours, but surprisingly one child has mastered it in just three -an incredible achievement. Of course it hasn’t been all plain sailing for everyone. There have been some thrills and spills and it takes great courage to hop straight back on again after falling. So what are the benefits of learning to ride a unicycle? Fitness and co-ordination are the main benefits of the activity, but it has also built the children’s self-confidence and creates a challenge for them. One boy said he felt proud of his achievement and will be spending all his lunch breaks riding around the school. His parents and teacher were amazed at how quickly he had developed the motor skills to meet the challenge. Some children are so keen
they want to take the unicycles home to practice. It looks like the school sports shed will need an extension to cater for this lat-

is the fifth generation on his family’s sheep and beef farm which he manages. This will be his first Regional Final and Mr Cashmore says he is motivated by the challenge the competition offers and is keen to see how he ranks against his peers. His biggest rival just might be his other half. Mrs Cashmore, 30, of the Auckland City Club has competed at the district level five times and made it through to the 2013 Northern Regional Final. She holds a Bachelor of Science and works as a Vet F.A.P Brand Manager with Bayer NZ in the Animal Health Division. She believes agriculture is the heart of New Zealand and financially, is what drives the economy. Another local, and first time Regional Finalist is Angus Thomas, 28, of the Franklin Club. Mr Thomas holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology and works as a field consultant for a fertilizer manufacturer in Waiuku. Also in the midst of the action are the future Young Farmers – the AgriKidsNZ and TeenAg competitions will be running alongside the ANZ Young Farmer Contest.

Risky exploratory deep sea drilling should be a prohibited activity in our Exclusive Economic Zone, but if the Government is going to recklessly allow it to happen, the public should have a say on each and every proposal.
the offshore oil exploration industry, nor will it ensure that corporations prepare effectively to respond to a major spill. The potential, near-term, financial benefit for the oil company prevails over the low probability risk that a major spill will occur.
Last week the Government announced new regulations which mean that New Zealanders are shut out of having a say on exploratory deep sea oil drilling.
The Government shouldn’t allow companies to risk our environment and economy with exploratory deep sea drilling in New Zealand’s waters but National are intent on eliminating New Zealanders even having a say.
The Government legislated to stop people voicing their opposition at sea by changing the Crown Minerals Act, and now they are locking New Zealanders out on land. Exploratory drilling is the riskiest phase of drilling, and can lead to horrendous accidents. Government regulation of deepwater offshore explorations has found it either difficult to evaluate the environmental impact, or too costly to perform the required review. Corporate self-regulation without effective government oversight will not adequately reduce the risk of accidents within
New Zealanders should get a say on proposals for risky deep sea drilling because the consequences of a spill will affect everyone. Under these regulations New Zealanders will not have been able to have a say on exploratory wells like the Deepwater Horizon well that caused a massive spill in the Gulf of Mexico. We can create a smart, green economy by moving towards renewable energy and clean-tech jobs and away from risky extractive activities like deep sea oil drilling.

Stunning experiences as students take on World Challenge trip Earlier this year a group of 18 students, divided into two groups and headed by Miss Keys and Miss Wilson, embarked on a world challenge trip to Vietnam and Cambodia, learning about themselves and about other cultures, and coping with a few dramas on the way. One group started in Cambodia, the other in Vietnam, and both groups participated in local projects to assist village communities, as well as undertaking arduous jungle treks and experiencing some of the local night life and New Year celebrations. The groups painted classrooms, assisted with street paving, and taught English to some of the schoolchildren, while embracing the south-east Asian lifestyle. Although they were supported by the World Challenge team, and had local guides to assist, the students had to cope with whatever the trip threw at them. For one group it was discovering that a giant tarantula had been perched on the bamboo framing their (outdoor) sleeping area during one trek, for the other group it meant suddenly having to rearrange their itinerary after one of the group lost their passport and could cross the border without new documentation. Highlights of the trip included a visit to the famous Temple of Angkor Wat,
a World Heritage site, and visiting the genocide and war museums, a sombre experience which highlighted a terrible time in the region’s history. One group was fortunate to speak with one of the survivors of the Pol Pot regime, and said the group
was humbled by the spirit and strength shown by the man. All participants described it as a once in a lifetime opportunity, and a project well worth tackling for any other students given the opportunity.

Summer 2014 is firmly etched into the minds of 23 Waikato children living with diabetes, even as the season draws to a close. And this year the holiday memories are not of insulin injecting and blood glucose monitoring. They are merry ones of swimming, kayaking, arts and crafts, baking, team challenges and sports, all thanks to the annual Waikato Diabetes Kids Camp. The camp is organised by the Waikids paediatric diabetes team at Waikato DHB and funded by Diabetes Waikato. Key organiser Waikato DHB clinical psychologist Joanna McClintock said invitations are sent to all Waikato DHB patients aged between 7 and 12 years old with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. “These children, in their day to day lives, often have minimal contact with others who face the same challenges that they face with diabetes,” she said. Diabetes means their bodies either can’t make insulin or the insulin doesn’t work in their bodies like it should. The glucose can’t get into the
cells normally, so the blood glucose level gets too high. Lots of glucose in the blood makes them sick if they don’t have insulin injections and get treatment. Staff from Waikato DHB, Raukura Hauora o Tainui and representatives from the two Pharmac funded pump companies supervise and oversee the activities and diabetes management by helping kids check their blood glucose levels and give them insulin during the day.
This year marked the camp’s tenth anniversary, to which four camp staff have attended all ten of the camps held since 1994. And although organising for the next year’s camp begins as soon as the previous camp finished, Dr McClintock says the countless hours of work are all worth it. “It’s a huge effort, but it’s of huge value. The pleasure kids and their families receive makes it all worthwhile,” she said.

Waiuku Scouts experience Jamboree Earlier this year 19 Waiuku Scouts and four Leaders boarded the Jamboree train headed for Feilding in the Manawatu. A truck and advance party of support staff with all the gear had already departed. The train was the largest passenger train seen on the main trunk line for many years, with 500 people and 14 carriages. The journey was long, but the excitement was truly evident as these young people with the exception of three had never been to a Jamboree and had no idea what was in store for them over the coming 10 days. The New Zealand Jambo-
ree only comes around every three years so most scouts only get one chance to go as a scout. Many however, return years later as a leader or staff member. On arrival there was a big parade into the centre of town. Fielding is not dissimilar to Waiuku in its country hospitality and the scouts marched into town lead by the local pipe band with onlookers lining the streets as they went. Several hours later they were pitching tents and setting up home for the next 10 days along with 4,000 other people. The days ahead brought rain, sun, wind, mud, tears, exhaustion and
lots and lots of fun. Some of the many activities ranged from sewing through to white water rafting and everything in between. Families met the scouts at the train station on their return to be greeted by those who had overcome personal challenges and grown as individuals while they were away. Scouts wore their voices out as they shared their experience over the next few days with anyone who would listen. The Waiuku Scouts would like to thank their local supporters, Lions, Rotary and Relief Transport who played a significant part in reducing the cost of this adventure.

The New Year is well and truly off with a hiss and a roar. The hiss is from the sweat from the runners on the Round the Bays, the only moisture we have seen this month! The roar is from the crowds at the great events we have held. Pacifica this past weekend, 80,000, Bruce Springsteen, 80,000, the Nines, 46,000. All indicators are up. Visitor nights 120,000 YTD. These events have brought $23.6 million into the Auckland economy with over half of that from outside the region. We have the Rolling Stones and of course our very own ITM 500 V8’s. Now that is a real roar. We might not all get direct benefit from these big events but in Franklin we can share the excitement and be a part of the roar should we want to. We all benefit indirectly as the economy expands creating opportunities just as an increased dairy pay-out improves our terms of trade and overall performance. Building consents are at a five year high in Auckland. A real sign that the build is at long last moving forward as will the employment opportunities that this industry generates. The Special Housing Areas are being progressed as effectively as possible. Franklin will see real movement in this space as we have several SHA. This process is proving that Council can move with real pace in the planning and consenting processes. A recipe for the future? There has been progress with Auckland Transport over repairs for rural roads. The too frequent gold design standard was meaning that rural roads would fall beneath the cost benefit ratio and consequently works were being put off for yet another year. AT has now a specialist rural team that will have the ability to apply some common engineering sense and cost effective solutions. Not
“Some issues are still being continually bought before Auckland Transport. “Our dangerous narrow bridges. Public transport that works in Franklin. Bus timetables and hours that reflect the need and usability of the service.” - Bill Cashmore everything will be done to everyone’s satisfaction but we are now in a better space to achieve some meaningful results. We are also going to have to take a good hard look at Rodney which has around 800km of unsealed roads. There are many who can remember when Franklin had a similar number. We solved our through some special policies and maybe some of the lessons learnt in Franklin will be applicable for Rodney. Some issues are still being continually bought before Auckland Transport. Our dangerous narrow bridges. Public transport that works in Franklin. Bus timetables and hours that reflect the need and usability of the service. Discussions at the top level have brought these issues front and centre. Improvements have been promised. In the immediate future the challenges are getting the 2014/15 Annual Plan finalised and progressing the Long Term Plan review. Both of these documents have the ‘R’ word front and centre - Rates. Our need to fund our infrastructure growth, public transport subsidies, social services, environmental monitoring and all the rest is a real challenge. The focus must be on core services and ensuring that there is real cost effec-
tiveness. There will have to be a good look at the rating differentials to ensure that they are effective and fair. We held the first representatives group meeting in Waiuku three weeks back. These groups can be really effective in achieving things for communities. The combined knowledge and experience alone can often be a real enabler in finding solutions. Personally I really appreciate being able to hear what is going on and work with the Local Board. We all want the same outcomes. The Wairoa reps group continues as it did last term. There have been some great celebrations these past few months. Te Hihi School, 100 years, Pollock, 150 years, the opening of the Omana walkway, the inaugural trolley derby in Maraetai, the opening of the Waitawa park to name a few. Well done to all. There is something very special about our part of this world. We live and work in a variety of communities. All have some wonderful attributes and wonderful people who give generously to their fellows. No wonder Franklin is the fourth fastest growing area in Auckland. There is still a long list of ‘to do’s’, there probably will always be a list. There’s always something to aim for.

First rise in two months Fuel prices rose two cents per litre in late February, the first price change in six weeks. The price of 91 octane petrol rose to $2.18 per litre at most brands, with diesel rising to $1.52 per litre. “It’s the first price increase in two months, and reflects increases in commodity prices since retail prices last changed in mid-January,” says AA PetrolWatch spokesperson Mark Stockdale. “Since then, the exchange rate has remained the same but the imported cost of fuel has risen $3-4 a barrel due in part to political unrest in Libya and Venezuela.” “This time last year, mo-
torists were paying $2.21 per litre for 91 octane petrol, and $1.55 per litre for diesel, with the exchange rate about the same.” Mr Stockdale says that at current commodity prices, the imported cost of petrol makes up less than half of the retail price at 96 cents per litre. Taxes make up another 93 cents – two-thirds of which funds transport projects and ACC. By comparison, the imported cost of diesel is 99 cents per litre, so if excise tax was included in the price of diesel like it is with petrol (instead of Road User Charges), the retail price of diesel would be about $2.21/litre including GST.

The Karaka Vintage Day is taking place again this summer on Sunday, March 23 and this time it is going to be bigger than ever as it showcases machinery used to shape New Zealand during the last century. Vintage engines, antique machinery and historic aircraft will be brought to life in an interactive experience for the Karaka Vintage Day which takes place at the newly expanded Karaka Sports Park in association with the Karaka Historical Society and Vintage Engine Restorers Auckland (VERA). As well as engines and equipment, historical buffs will have the opportunity to view classic cars, military vehicles, aircraft and more at the biennial event. Visitors can also visit Karaka Museum which houses artefacts previously on display at the Karaka War Memorial Hall. The event started in 2000 and Rob Higham from Karaka Historical Society says: “we try and ensure there is something for the whole family. “The vintage displays are a real draw card along with the parade of vehicles, machinery and tractors. Children can enjoy lots of activities while their parents can spend time perusing the vendor stalls for books, jewellery, clothes, art and collectibles.”
Road Lighting 2014 conference organiser, and managing director of management consultancy Strategic Lighting Partners Ltd, Godfrey Bridger, says the main message of the conference is that New Zealand councils and road controlling authorities should be planning for a switch to LED road lighting to save energy, to save money, to save lives and to reduce street crime. “These messages may seem almost too good to be true,” says Godfrey Bridger, “but a top line-up of international speakers from six nations - US, UK, Canada, France, Norway and Australia - is reinforcing them with first-hand experience of city-wide LED lighting retrofits and the benefits enjoyed by residents and ratepayers as a result.” He says conference speakers include experts who have led the world’s largest
urban LED road lighting retrofits, saving the City of Los Angeles USD $10 million a year and Seattle nearly USD $2.5 million per year so far in electricity and maintenance costs. They also include international researchers who are identifying clear links between road lighting levels and accident rates. Godfrey Bridger says SLP identified two years ago that councils in New Zealand could save 40-70% of their road lighting and maintenance costs each year with LED, and that road lighting represented up to half of a council’s overall electricity costs. A second major report prepared by SLP directors Godfrey Bridger and Bryan King suggested better New Zealand road lighting would also help reduce the $1.2 billion annual cost to the country of night-time road deaths and injuries.

Your fortnightly motoring guide.. Stage two of major roadworks set to begin
Transfield Services have advised that the second stage of the major roundabout development in Waiuku will commence this week. The Queen Street closure will be lifted and Constable Road will be closed. Transfield says traffic management will remain similar to Stage One, with access diverted through King Street and detour signs will guide traffic through “We are obviously behind in terms of time for various reasons but hoping to reduce this delay as we progress with the job,” a spokesperson said. “This second Stage is expected to be finished by the end of the first week in April. Sections of footpath will have to be closed for few days while new footpaths are being constructed. The crew in charge of traffic management will be implementing controls to ensure pedestrians’ safety.”
Toyota and Subaru collect top safety marks Top safety marks have been achieved for the Toyota Corolla sedan and Subaru WRX. Both vehicles have received a 5-star safety rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Programme. AA Motoring Services General Manager Stella Stocks says both brands are
achieving the safety standards consumers expect of them. The Subaru has also achieved the top pedestrian protection rating of ‘good’, a step above the minimum 5-star requirement of ‘acceptable’ with 28.31 out of 36 points. The Toyota achieved 22.89 points. Transport Agency spokes-
man Andy Knackstedt says the presence of two more five star cars in the New Zealand market is good news for Kiwi drivers. “Five star vehicles earn that rating because they give drivers and passengers the best chance of walking away from a crash, or of avoiding the crash altogether with ac-
Pukekohe round sorts out leaders
The end is in sight for Mount Maunganui’s Cody Cooper, Mangakino’s Kayne Lamont and Hamilton’s Josiah Natzke in the 2014 New Zealand Motocross Championships. These three riders are each just three races away from clinching, respectively, the MX1, MX2 and 125cc national titles in this season’s Backflips Clothingsponsored championships. After the third round of four in the series near Pukekohe on Sunday, Honda rider Cooper left the track at Tuakau with a massive 37-point lead over visiting Scottish former Grand Prix star Billy MacKenzie (Yamaha), Husqvarna rider Lamont packed up his helmets and boots and drove away with a 38-point advantage over Dargaville’s Hamish Dobbyn (KTM) and fellow KTM rider Natzke shot off back to his Waikato base with a 35-point buffer over another KTM rider, Atiamuri’s Hadleigh Knight. With 25 points on offer for each race win and only three races remaining for each class
- at the final round in Taupo in two weeks’ time - the class leaders therefore each have a race up their sleeves. Barring a miracle or disaster, depending upon your point-of-view, it seems a mere formality that Cooper, Lamont and Nazke will be the 2014 champions at the end of the day at Taupo. For Cooper it will represent a successful defence of the MX1 crown he also won last season, while for Lamont and Natzke it will be their first senior national titles. Both Lamont and Natzke are no strangers to winning, however, because both these individuals are former New Zealand junior champions and have both already tasted outstanding successes overseas too. The 2014 senior nationals wind up with the fourth and final round set for Taupo on March 22. Inset: Cody Cooper in action on Sunday.
tive safety features like ESC and ABS. “We’re making good progress in reducing deaths and serious injuries on New Zealand roads, but we need to keep improving the safety of all parts of our transport system to save more lives and prevent more serious injuries. That means creating safer roads and roadsides, encouraging safer road use and safer travel speeds, and getting more people into safer vehicles.” The full list of ANCAP’s vehicle safety ratings, other vehicle safety information and the specifications of the rated vehicles are available online at aa.co.nz or rightcar. govt.nz.

Illegal chicken processor convicted The conviction and sentencing of a garage-based chicken processing operation reinforces the food safety risks around the illegal slaughter and sale of animals, says the Ministry for Primary Industries. Rong Yu Zhen, 36, a self employed chicken processor from Manukau, earlier pleaded guilty to multiple charges involving the illegal slaughter and sale of poultry, under the Animal Products Act 1999.
At the Manukau District Court on Wednesday, Zhen was convicted and sentenced to 175 hours Community Work as he was unable to pay a fine, and his business Rong Yu Enterprise was convicted and discharged. Four large incubators, a de-feathering machine, scales, $13,475 in cash and other business items were ordered forfeit to the Crown. Documents seized from

Zhen’s home showed the offending involved 110 transactions where at least 2620 chickens were sold to retail outlets and individuals for $52,000. Zhen had supplied local retail outlets with illegally slaughtered poultry from his own property, says David Blake, MPI Investigations Manager, North. Those restaurants have been separately dealt with by MPI, and reminded of their obligations.

Whether it is introducing yourself over the fence, having a cup of tea or arranging a play date for your kids at the local park – Neighbours Day is the perfect opportunity to get to know your neighbours better. Happening 29-30 March, Neighbours Day is a national campaign that aims to turn strangers into neighbours and streets into neighbourhoods throughout Aotearoa. Councillor Cathy Casey, Community Development and Safety Committee Chair, says getting to know your neighbours is often something people think about but never quite get round to doing. “I encourage everyone to use Neighbours Day as a great excuse to get to know those who live near you a bit better. Even introducing yourself and knowing your neighbour’s
name is a great place to start. “Neighbours Day is not only about being friendly and having some fun, it is about creating safer communities. If you know the people on your street, and keep an eye out for each other, everyone will be better off,” says Cr Casey. Auckland Council Local Boards are supporting Neighbours Day events in their local communities. Activities planned around Auckland this Neighbours Day include street BBQs, treasure hunts and community garden open days. This year’s Waiuku Lions Club 38th running of the Sand to Mud Run on April 6th has more to offer than just the race itself – there’s a Family Fun Day at Massey Park from 10am till 3pm, with children’s games, tuga-war competition, stalls, refreshments & music along with Lions BBQ to satisfy your dietary needs. Organisers are expecting yet another great turnout for the annual fundraising event. Registration will commence at the Lions Station in Belgium Street from 7.30am and closing at 9.30am to allow the last bus to get participants out to Karioitahi Beach in time for the start at 10am. Organisers encourage participants to register early and catch the earlier busses to miss the last minute rush. Free off road parking is provided in the paddocks across Domain Street from the Lions Station. With Massey Park as the finishing point again this year, runners will travel down Martyn Street into Kent Street and then Domain Street before entering Massey Park for the final
sprint across the Park to the finish line. To cater for the families of participants and spectators, from 10am there will be children’s art area, face painting, bouncy castle, etc along with commercial and community stalls operating. Youngsters in teams of two will be able to tackle the 4 event Fun Day Challenge for free – the Spud & Spoon race, the Three Legged race, the Ball Race and the “Move the Mud” Race with a chance of winning a Lions BBQ sausage. Youngsters entering the Fun Day Challenge do not have to have been participants in the Fun Run itself. Bring along your picnic basket, your umbrella and picnic blanket, settle down and enjoy the runners completing the event followed with music supplied by Waiuku Country & Western Club, you can also have a cool drink in the Waiuku Cosmopolitan Club Refreshment tent operational from 10.30am. Following the Prize giving at 12.30pm, last year’s successful inaugural Tug a war competition will commence but in an expanded format.
Enter your six-person teams on the day before the 12.30pm start, free entry. Entrants in the Tug a War competition do not have to have been participants in the Fun Run itself. The Primary School competition will have $500 prize money for School IT purchases. The Adults competition will have a $500 prize to be donated to the school, club or charity of your choice and finally the “celebrity” Tug of War will end the competition for the afternoon. It’s still not too late to make the decision to entry the Sand to Mud either as runner or walker as an individual or as a team. All income from the event will be used by Waiuku Lions to support youth and other community projects. Any school child can enter the Lucky Draw to receive one of 8 Hunua YMCA school holiday camps after they have completed registration for the Fun Run. This should well be one of the biggest Sand to Mud events ever and organisers have their fingers crossed that the endless summer will last just long enough for the run.

Mayor’s comments ‘news to the others’ says councillor
Franklin Ward Councillor Bill Cashmore says Mayor Len Brown’s announcement last week concerning different sources of funding for Council was news to the others around the table. “The Act of Parliament that set up this Council did give the mayor presidential like powers and a real leadership role,” he says. There have been suggestions in recent months that the Mayor is paying little heed to his rebuke by councillors over his behaviour, and it was understood that there would be more discussion from the Mayor with councillors before policy announcements were made. Almost immediately, media reports referred to the suggestions to look at ways to allocate funding over rates issues as a ‘Poll Tax’, something which Bill Cashmore says was unfortunate and not the intent of what has been announced. “Having said though there certainly needs to be a meaningful discussion
around our funding system for local government,” he says. “The capital program for roading, public transport, and the operational expenses that go with that is a massive ask from the ratepayers of Auckland and tax payers of New Zealand. “We have elderly people being forced to sell their life time homes because they are on a fixed income or an income that has dropped because of the record low interest rates we have been experiencing over the past half-decade. Their rates as levied have escalated to an extent that they have to relocate to an area that has lower property values. “What are the options?” he asks. “A transaction tax, sales tax, additional income tax? Do we restrict the services that Council currently supplies to our communities.? Events, art galleries, subsidised public transport?” Councillor Cashmore says this is very real problem: “In the first instance we must ensure that we focus on core activities. We need to ensure that we max-
imise the value received for each dollar spent. “We back up Auckland Council management on effective and efficient practises. We need to investigate Public Private Partnerships as a potential means of alternative funding. We must consider what is subsidised and what is user pays or a mixture of both.” He says these are real questions to a real problem, but adds that the answers will no doubt be a matrix of all the above and some other solutions as well. Reading between the lines, it certainly appears that Mayor Len Brown’s comments about ‘other’ ways of finding funding are likely to result in actual policy in the near future; the question will be whether that funding is as a redistribution, or whether it will mean areas like Franklin, which already have far fewer accessible services than central Auckland, will be asked to dip into their pockets to support ratepayers in more affluent areas.
Letter: Have we become complacent over council services? Doesn’t anyone-else notice these things, or am I just getting old? Have we become so complacent, now that Big Brother Len holds the ‘strings’? Some thanks must go to our retiring MP, who voted in favour of the Auckland City amalgamation (against the wishes of the people he represents) when the greater part of Waiuku, became a very minor part of the largest city in New Zealand.. Don’t get me wrong....things ARE improving....work has begun on our two new roundabouts.....after a series of delays....and a number of years. Let us hope nothing new is unearthed during
the construction to further delay this development. And there’s the work on the improvement in the ‘power service’.....all the road cones lining certain streets around town and the ‘gathering’ of the ‘service vehicles’ for these jobs, at the Netball/Golf and Squash/Tennis Club carpark, around 7:20 weekday mornings. But we still have: • A main street with a surface that undulates like a roller coaster course. ( This we can’t fully experience at the moment , while having to endure a detour, which includes traffic queues, a roundabout, pedestrian crossings and
more roadworks!) • the ongoing saga and costs of the very expensive, town footpaths, complete with a foot-bath (after a shower of rain) at the Disability Parking Stop, outside the ASB Bank. • a new, ‘yet-to-be-opened’ toilet block, which reminds me of a 1960’s Waiheke Island, longdrop! • a group of bureaucrats, doing their best to discourage our hardworking volunteers of ‘Mudlarks’, from removing the unsightly mangroves from our waterways,(which never were there and shouldn’t be there now.) Who will be King? IS WEEKEND PREMIER RUGBY KICKS OFF TH
New competition could spring some surprises New teams in 12-team premiership; Puni to be Te Kauwhata’s reserves There’s a whole new look to the Counties-Manukau Club Rugby competition this year, as the union looks to extend the premier competition and bring in some of the clubs from lower divisions. Among the biggest changes has been the introduction of Puni as the reserve team for Te Kauwhata, something which appears to be a first for rugby in the wider Auckland and Waikato region at least. Kili Tabakau, Rugby Officer for the Auckland Union, says the Auckland format is different, in that all clubs must have a Premier and Reserve side and Under 21 to be in the Premier competition. In the Waikato, CEO Graham Bowen says it is not something that has been done in that region, although they have amalgamated clubs in the past to try to strengthen the game. Graham did say they considered putting a Thames Valley club with Frankton last year in the Division One competition, but found logistically it was too difficult. The change in Counties-Manukau has provided a boost of excitement for the Puni club, and there’s also enthusiasm for the move within Te Kauwhata, but the changes, (voted for overwhelmingly by delegates), will likely throw up a few potential issues as the season progresses. The union says the reason for the change is “To provide a competition that involves as many of the established clubs within CMRFU in a meaningful competition and in particular to allow those clubs currently within Second Division or still with at least one team participating in a competition (Drury, Weymouth, Te Kauwhata and Puni) to work towards strengthening their clubs and having more players competing at Premier level in CMRFU.” One of the concerns is potential mismatches, as some of the newer teams come up against the warhorses of Premier Rugby in the region. Papakura last year conceded over 1000 points during the season, and hasn’t won a premier match in two years. The change appears unlikely to help them out against the likes of Karaka, Waiuku, Pukekohe, Patumahoe or Ardmore-Marist, but at least pits them
against Te Kauwhata, Drury and Weymouth in some matches which will likely go close. It’s also questionable whether there are sufficient premier grade players in the region to maintain the overall standard, and players switching clubs for a chance to play premier instead of reserve grade may weaken the depth in the clubs they leave. The premier competition is now in two rounds; first round being an 11game round robin grading round beginning this weekend. The top placed team at end of the first round is recognised by winning same cup as last season. In the second round, the top eight clubs play off for the McNamara Cup Premiership - playing a 7 match round robin, culminating in straight semi finals (1 v 4, 2 v 3) on 19 July and the final 26 July. The bottom four clubs will play for the Sid Marshall Shield Championship in a round robin, with straight semis and finals on the same dates as the premiers. Where it gets a bit tricky though, is with the premier reserves. To keep the premier and reserve sides travelling together, the fortunes of the two teams are based on the performance of the premier side. For example, if a club wins the first round of the premier reserves, but its premier side finishes ninth or worse, the reserve team follows it to the bottom four competition. On the flip side of this, a reserve side which doesn’t win a match could still find itself in the top-eight finals series if its premier side makes the cut. It’s probably the only way, logistically, to make it happen, but there may well be a few disgruntled premier reserve players who won’t get a chance to play for the top reserve trophy, despite having the points on board to make the top-eight finals. However, the new format is now set in place for the next three years, and will certainly add a new dimension to the competition, while giving a boost to the clubs which have been introduced to the top level.

Local like you!
It’s a long way from the stadiums of New Zealand, Europe and Japan to a couch in Waiuku, but that’s where we found All Black World Cup icon Stephen Donald last week as he recovers from surgery ahead of the new Japanese season. In typically laconic Donald style, he describes the operation as ‘having his hips cleaned up’. The actual operation was to remove bone spurs and repair a labral tear, and will require around six to seven weeks on crutches. Stephen says he expects to be back playing for Mitsubishi in the Japanese competition by the start of the season in late August, where he has a year left to run on his contract. He’s hoping the combination of the operation and the less-physical nature of the Japanese game will mean he can extend his professional career for another few years, but has already an eye on the future, having completed a Bachelor of Business degree recently. It’s an indication of the globe-trotting lifestyle of today’s professional footballers that he started his degree at Waikato University while with the Chiefs, then crosscredited his papers to Newcastle University while he was playing for English club Bath, and then completed the degree by correspondence while in Japan. He’s also picked up a bit of the Japanese language, although laughs that after being back in New Zealand for a while he’s probably forgotten it and will be back to square one. “I tried it out at a sushi restaurant last week, and it didn’t work,” he says with a grin. He’s notorious for being an intensely private person, and is reluctant to do interviews,
let along photographs, but I’ve got to ask him about the forthcoming movie ‘The Kick’ which details the moments leading up to that fateful goal which won the World Cup. As one report said: “The Kick looks at events through the eyes of Stephen Donald, who missed out on selection for the Rugby World Cup squad and went white baiting with his best mate instead, only to get a call at the eleventh hour.” Asked about the portrayal of himself in the movie, Stephen says it’s a movie - not a documentary, and whatever comes out is whatever direction the film-makers choose to take. He didn’t spend a heap of time detailing his kicking style to actor David de Lautour, (who plays him in the film), saying that he’s basically had one beer with him and that’s it. As to the experience of having part of his life portrayed in a film, Stephen says it’s “pretty outrageous from my point of view.” Of course, the fact that someone is making a movie based around one kick brings up the fact that mention of Stephen Donald

always brings mention of THAT game. I ask whether, given his many achievements in rugby, whether being defined by one moment among many is annoying. “I wouldn’t say annoying,” he says, mulling it over, “I mean, if you’re going to be defined by one game, then a World Cup final’s probably the right one to pick. It’s not something I personally think about, but people that don’t know you, that’s what they invariably talk about.” So what other moments rank up there? “Well, obviously that (the World Cup) was the big glory moment, but there’s been lots of other moments that have been pretty cool. I’m proud of it, but personally, probably no more prouder than I was when we won a club championship with Waiuku, or winning the NPC with Waikato, or the first Counties-Manukau title with the Waiuku College First XV for the first time, especially because I did those things with my best mates.” Those World Cup moments opened doors though. “It was life changing in a lot of ways, around how I
was viewed (in professional rugby),” he says. It led him to Europe, and then to Japan, where he’s playing “some of the quickest rugby I’ve ever played,” although the hits are not as hard as in New Zealand. “I can wake up in the morning and feel like playing another game of rugby, instead of feeling like I’ve been in a car accident. It’s still fast and furious, but it’s a lot easier on the shoulders and back.”] Having friends around adds to the experience of playing in Japan, with great mate Richard Kahui just 20 metres down the road, and Waikato team-mates David Hill and Steven Bates also playing in the Japanese league. There’s a chance to catch up and go fishing every now and then, plus play a bit of golf around the match schedule, which is around three games every four weeks. It’s a very different playing environment as well, with huge stadiums but crowds of only a few hundred people as the Japanese corporate sides battle it out with their teams for bragging rights. From a one-off spray job for a home handyman to a full 100-door service, we do it all! It’s 40 years since Waiuku Rugby first sent a team on an overseas tour, and that occasion will be celebrated this weekend with a reunion lunch prior to the Waiuku Premiers first home game against Ardmore-Marist at Rugby Park. On March 2, 1974, 23 members (19 players and four wives), of the club, flew Australia, having raised funds through cleaning a chook shed, grubbing thistles and painting houses and the Borough Council offices. Games were arranges with three teams in Brisbane, but torrential rain meant the group was stranded for four days in Grafton on the way to Brisbane. The flooding was the worst ever experienced in the area, and one match was cancelled. The team were
beaten by Canberra Royals, but defeated Southern Districts after a Merv Price try and a Ken Hancock conversion and penalty. Rob Shackleton was captain and Ross Brighouse the coach, and the team included many players who went on to be stalwarts of the club, including four (Roy Craig, Richard Sheehan, Brent Dawson and Maurice Brighouse) who later became life members. Other players and members of the tour party included Peter Summerville, Murray Fowlie, Alan Neary, Alan Baker, Greg Andrews, Steven Andrews, John Hamilton, Geoff Johnson, Phillip Twidle, Derek Harries, Alister Cunningham, Janice Price, Pam Brighouse, Lorraine Craig and Raewyn Brighouse.
Donald enjoying a break at home Continued from p.20 Still, it’s a good job for a professional rugby player, and one which Stephen hopes to continue, although he laughs that if he doesn’t pick up another Japanese contract he’ll see if he can get a spot in the Waiuku Premiers and find a job at the Kentish Hotel. “I’ll get by,” he grins. On the subject of local premier rugby, Stephen says one of the things he has noticed has been the age of
the teams, with the players getting a lot younger - “although Mark Muir (Waiuku’s ageless prop), brings the average age up!”. He reckons the pressures of mortgages, workloads and families are taking players away from the game earlier, and believes that a lot of the experience he picked up as a young player from some of the older heads is not around these days. But, he says, that’s just a sign of the times and teams
have to work around it. When the pro career is all done, he is ‘definitely’ going to settle down in New Zealand, and has toyed with the idea of coaching although to what level he has no real plans. At the moment, he’s enjoying the break, catching up with mates, and hoping to catch a bit of the local rugby before it’s back onto the treadmill that is the life of a rugby professional of the modern era.

Waiuku fielding a new-look team for 2014 Waiuku Rugby has had a mixed start to the preseason of 2014, with a heavy loss against Hamilton Old Boys followed by good wins for both its Premier side and a combination Reserves and Under-21s side at Rugby Park on the weekend. The new coaching team of Paul Graham and Dave Stewart are looking at a relatively youthful side, but have had to cope with a rash of injuries and defections from some key players as the season drew closer. Earlier this year Dave said the backline has lost outstanding half Lucky Palamo with an ankle injury received playing sevens in Sydney, while Tom Hulse is also unavailable, Shane Hemi is overseas, Counties and Waiuku prop Simon Lemalu has an overseas contract, and Maka Tatafu is still playing his rugby in Spain and won’t be back until May. Blues lock Ronald Raaymakers is also out for the first part of the competition as he recovers from shoulder surgery. Paul Graham, who makes the step into coaching the Premiers this season after successful stints with local first XV rugby, says it’s just a case of getting on with the job. “We’ll have a very young backline, and it’s a talented side, with players getting the chance to step up from our age-group sides.”
Tony Misa will be back in action for 2014, and although Raaymakers will be out for perhaps five rounds, Dave says Waiuku may actually get more play from him this year as he doesn’t have Super Rugby commitments with the Blues. Joining the squad is Dan Fitzharris, a rangy lock who has played for Coastal in Taranaki and was rated as one of the top locks in club competition, as well as a former NZ Universities player. Work has brought him to the area with a local veterinarian business, and, now living in Karaka, he adds some height to the Waiuku pack. Both say one of the features of the team is the number of players who have grown up in the area and come through the ranks. Among those is one of last year’s age-group standout players, Nathan Millar. The outside back has made the most of his opportunities, and is an example of the progression structure open for young players who can see a pathway to the top side. In the Under-21s former College player Jack Hardie is already making an impression, and with the strength in the coaching crew working with him and the rest of the side at Waiuku, he has a real opportunity to develop his game and reach the potential he is already hinting at.

There was a special moment during the pre-season matches at Waiuku’s Rugby Park on Saturday, when the visiting team were reminded about a little of their history from Waiuku’s Denise Hughes. Denise, married to local racing trainer Kevin, grew up north
of Auckland, and watched some of the match between Waiuku and visitors East Coast Bays. Denise’s father Andrew Smith, and her uncle Joe Smith, were both founding members of East Coast Bays in 1946, Joe becoming the side’s first club captain.
The pre-season game gave Denise a chance to meet with (from left above); premier coach John Scott, Committee Member Bruce Mitchinson and Vice President Paul Schon, and reminisce a little over some of the people they knew.
School. In the boys division, Wesley College beat Manurewa High School 31-0 and James Cook High School edged out Te Kauwhata 26-15 to secure the third spot. The top try scorer was Niko Moala from Manurewa High School. The Most Improved Player of the Tournament was Abigail Penn from Rosehill College. Tournament sponsor BRANDSpanking supplied the prize packs and all the players a drink of Gatorade. It was a fantastic day with excellent talent on display and bodes well for the future of sevens in the region.

Onewhero v Te Kauwhata Onewhero get to host Te Kauwhata in their opening match of the 2014 premier rugby season and will be looking to make the next step up after looking like being strong semi-final contenders in 2013. Onewhero caused a few upsets last year, led by the rugged Grant Henson, and this year have an early chance to get their season on track against one of the newly-promoted sides in Te Kauwhata. With nine wins in the regular season and a healthy points difference, Onewhero looked the goods, only missing out on a semi finals spot by a few points. For Te Kauwhata, the match is all about establishing respectability early in the season. Te Kauwhata Rugby and Sports Club was one of three clubs promoted (along with Drury and Weymouth) after the disbandment of the Division 2 competition. Due to the late notice of the restructuring decision, and TKRSC being relatively rural location, the southern most club in the Counties Manakau region, its been a huge challenge for the Club to get ready for 2014. The club says its been critical for the Club to work on its financial structure and attempt to build a playing roster that is competitive in the Premier Division. The Club has recruited a new Head Coach in Pat Flavell who has extensive previous experience in the Counties Manakau competition mainly with the Karaka Club from 2003 - 2008. Pat has also had significant success as a Counties Manakau age group representative coach culminating in a very successful run as Head Coach for the Under 20’s and Academy sides. The support coaching and management team includes Te Kauwhata locals Blair Cooper, Wayne Gordon and Frank Greene. A key signing in 2014 is Caleb Brown a very capable utility back who has
been plying his trade with Hauraki North and Thames Valley Representative side Te Kauwhata Rugby says it is one of the few remaining rural rugby clubs that survives on hard work, and the passion of its local players and supporters. The premier playing squad spend the summer and early autumn weeks contracting themselves, bringing in hay, providing labour for the local croppers and fruit growers, chopping wood, collecting scrap metal, any work that allows the club to survive and to allow the players the facilities and equipment that most club players take for granted. In late 2012 the Club set itself the lofty goal of touring Argentina in the spring of 2014, the aim being to consolidate playing resource and to visit a unique part of the world that most of us will not have a chance to visit. With the teams elevation to premier status and the increased financial demands for 2014, the Club has postponed the Argentina Tour and the focus is on having the team aquit itself well on the football field. In terms of the team aspiration, the coaching staff are taking one game at a time. Te Kauwhata have had some useful preseason hit outs against Huntly and Ponsonby from Auckland. Bombay v Karaka Up on the hill there will be another great challenge on Saturday as a resurgent Bombay side look to take on a Karaka side which missed out by one competition point from making the top four last year. Karaka were probably a better side than their finishing position showed, but Bombay showed last year that they are never a team that can be taken for granted. Bombay scored six wins in the championship for 2013, and similar play would keep them securely in the top eight for the competi-
tion this year, but they are likely to be true top-four contenders, especially if they can open with a win against Karaka on Saturday. Karaka have Craig Hill, with 277 games for club, back coaching the side again in his fifth year, and assisted by Waka Setitaia who has 65 games for club including last year. The club has recruited well, with player gains including Elisi Pulu (Pakuranga), Tau Mata’afa (Australia), Harry Luteru (Waiuku), Seluini Molia (21’s), Desma Liaina (Papatoetoe), and Kieron Rollinson (Cronulla Sharks) That is balanced out somewhat by the player losses; Seremaia Tagicakibau (Otago), Danny Tusitala (Ponsonby), Sila Puafisi (Gloucester), Taione Vea (Wasps), Reuben Lava (Retired), John Taufa (Police College), Bruce Kaino (France), Tevita Vaipulu (France) With strong sponsor support fromVernon & Vazey, Navigation Homes, Gellert Nurseries, Papakura Lawnmowers, Pegasus Sports Foundation, Dee Contracting, Karaka is a new look side with a lot of youth which will be looking to develop during the year. Andrew West is this year playing his 50th and blazer game for the club after starting Senior Rugby in 2007. Drury v Papakura This match up is new territory for both sides, with premiership points up for grabs in the opening round, and if either side has aspirations of a topeight finish after the round robin they will be needing to win this. Papakura have the top-flight experience, but have also struggled badly against some of the top teams in the past two years, so the question is whether the experience will be enough to head off a Drury side who will be keen to make their mark earlier against a side they would have targeted as an opportunity early in the season.

A/H 09 232 1581 with the Counties Manukau Union with numerous titles as the champion club, Manurewa have not made the final step up the ladder in the past few years and will be thinking 2014 could be theirs. In contrast, Weymouth RFC was founded in the early 1970’s, so in comparison to other more established clubs in the proud Counties Manukau union it is relatively young. The club was established as a “breakaway”, club from the more established rugby club in the region Manurewa RFC. However they can boast a few notable representative and first class players over the years, most notably Jonah Lomu who played his first senior club rugby game for Weymouth, and Joe Rockococo who played age grade rugby at Weymouth before heading to the bright lights of Auckland.

Counties-Manukau Referee Education Officer John Dustow said “The information evening was well received and attended, so I hope it will be the first of many to ensure that the Counties Manukau rugby fraternity are up to speed to enhance their team’s knowledge of the legal side of the rules of rugby.” The presentation is on the Counties Manukau website www.steelers.co.nz in the ‘Community rugby section’ under ‘Referee’s’ and ‘laws in brief’.

years have been wiling to chance their arm from wide out, while Pukekohe’s success has historically been founded on strength and a very organised game plan. Their defensive capabilities put sides under pressure, something which was shown very clearly last year as they snatched an intercept pass in the last minutes of their semi final against Waiuku to snatch an unlikely victory and make their way to the final. Manurewa v Weymouth It’s tough coming into a new competition and being matched against one of the likely front-runners in the opening game, but that’s the task that’s ahead of Weymouth this weekend. Manurewa were knocked out in the semi finals last year, and are generally knocking on the door of a top-four spot, while Weymouth have in the past struggled to maintain a side through the season and have a major task on Saturday. The most successful club

Pukekohe v Patumahoe The Counties Power Game of the week pits two teams against each other who should either be capable of taking the McNamara Cup. Played at Pukekohe’s Colin Lawrie Fields, one would favour the home side, particularly after their run last year when they made it all the way to the final only to be toppled by a very good Ardmore-Marist side. Pukekohe don’t field weak teams, and will this year be looking to go one better than 2013, although Patumahoe have plenty of ground to make up. Patumahoe, champions in 2012, suffered through player losses in 2013 and managed to win only three games, finishing with a minus points differential. That fall from grace is one they won’t want to repeat and against near rivals Pukekohe will be determined to put on a good showing for sponsors and fans alike. Patumahoe always have an exciting backline and in recent

Waiuku v Ardmore Marist Julian Stone has returned for his third year as Ardmore Marist’s premier coach, following his teams McNamara Cup win last year, and if anything, the team is looking even stronger this season. They certainly won’t want for experience and will provide a very stern test for a young and revamped Waiuku side which is in a rebuilding phase. 2014 will see three of Ardmore’s premier players taking the field for the 100th time, which is most unusual in the modern era. These players will be Cody Martin, Whaiora Rangiwai and Suilasi Taufalele. New players to the union this season are winger Jessie Toto, returning from injury having played for the Otago Union and young hooker Feta Luamanu who comes to the team from the Wellington academy and Rongotai College. Ardmore Marist is once again proudly supported by major sponsor and Counties stalwarts, South Auckland Motors Ford and Mazda. The club will also be hosting the Fijian under 20 team while they are competing in the Junior World Cup in June this year. Ardmore Marist will be featuring in Grass Roots rugby on the 24th May when they play Weymouth at home. and they are hosting the final of the Women’s Pasifika Aotearoa Cup on 19th April. “Back to back wins in the Premier McNamara Cup and U21 Massey Cup is obviously our target, but our five competition teams will be aiming for finals berths. Last season our Premier Reserve and Under 85 teams were knocked out in their respective semi finals,” a club spokesman said. For Waiuku, this match is likely to have far more riding on it than just the opening game’s points. The side has a very tough opening draw, with three games against top-eight clubs in the first three weeks, and with some of its key players still likely to be unavailable early in the season. However, injury worries for some of their new players appear to have subsided, and they showed on Saturday they have attacking talent and strength in the forwards. On a hard and fast surface, it is expected to be an entertaining game, and one which will likely draw a big crowd.

She said: “We’ve been hugely impressed with this city and the stadium, following out inspection tour today,. The level of support for this tournament is so evident everywhere you go and on that basis we feel very confident that Hamilton will deliver a great tournament for FIFA in 2015.”
Stifling, hot conditions, a hard and bouncy surface and a new combination for the team made Saturday’s pre-season match for Waiuku AFC against Waitamata a tough proposition. In the end, the side went down 2-1, with a Callum Benson header the only goal for Waiuku. Above: co-coach Derek Sinclair lines up a shot on goal in the desert-dry conditions.
History could be made after Pukekohe New Zealand motocross history could be re-written before the end of this month. Not since the year 2000 has a teenager, fresh out of the junior ranks, gone on to dominate the senior ranks in just his debut year, but it looks like happening again this season with CMR Red Bull KTM Team rider Josiah Natzke. Masterton’s Luke Burkhart was just 16 years old when he beat a fellow fresh graduate from the junior ranks, Taupo’s Ben Townley, to the national 125cc title in the year 2000. Hamilton rider Josiah Natzke is still just 15 years old and on the verge of clinching the 2014 125cc senior New Zealand title, a mission he is expected to complete at the fourth and final round of this season’s New Zealand Motocross Championships at Taupo in less than two weeks’ time. Natzke raced to a hat-trick of wins in the 125cc class at Pukekohe’s round three of the series on Sunday, extending to 35 points his buffer over his nearest challenger, fellow CMR Red Bull KTM rider Hadleigh Knight, of Atiamuri. With 25 points on offer for each race win and only three races remaining for each

Hamilton gets nod for World Cup Some of the most senior officials from football’s world governing body, FIFA, have given Hamilton the stamp of approval as it prepares to host FIFA’s second largest global tournament – the U-20 World Cup in 2015. FIFA Inspectors were in Hamilton last week to inspect the City’s host stadium and various training venues for this landmark event and agreed that the venue was in great shape to showcase the world’s biggest game. During the inspection tour, the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2015, also announced that the all new FIFA U-20 World Cup trophy would be taken on a nationwide tour of New Zealand, starting in Northland on 5 May 2014. The trophy, which will be presented to the winners of the FIFA U-20 World Cup New Zealand 2015, has never been used before so New Zealanders will be the first the lay eyes on it. The trophy will travel through Northland and Auckland before arriving in the Waikato on 10 May. It will spend a couple of days in Hamilton while also visiting Ngaruawahia, Cambridge,

class – at the final round in Taupo on March 22 – it means Natzke has an entire race up his sleeve. “I was able to sprint away at the start of all three races and that was it really. I had been working on my starts all week leading up to the Pukekohe event and that obviously paid off,” he said. “I knew that if I could get the holeshot I would be away and I could hold off the challengers. “I still had to respect the track, though, and I had to be patient and not push too
hard in some places.” At age 15, Natzke is still entitled to race in the junior ranks in New Zealand but he declared that he was fully a senior competitor now and wouldn’t be going back. Sensational senior debut performances like Natzke’s are a rare thing -Hamilton rider Darryll King leapt out of the junior ranks to win the 125cc title in his debut senior campaign in 1986, and his younger brother Shayne King repeated the feat, in 1987 to keep the title in the family.
