New look to local politics

The couple were both individually honoured for dedicating 40 years to the organisation, as dignitaries and emergency services representatives attended and marked the occasion at the Waiuku Cosmopolitan Club. The Mayors of Auckland and Waikato have been returned after provisional results for the local government elections on the weekend, but there have been some new faces in the local community boards and for local councillor positions. The Franklin results have seen an overwhelming result for the Team Franklin group, with the party securing all four spots in Pukekohe, both Waiuku spots, and two of the three Wairoa positions. Rowan Muir in Wairoa was the only Team Franklin rep at that level not to get elected, being beaten for the third spot by around 350 votes by Dr Lyn Murphy. The Counties Manukau District Health Board saw further success for the Team Franklin brand, with the experienced Franklin resident Dianne Glenn getting the nod to join the other successful candidates. Progress results for the Auckland Council elections showed incumbent Mayor Len Brown has been re-elected for a second term and was substantially ahead of his nearest rival John Palino. The voter turnout, traditionally low for local government elections, was even worse this year, with only around 34.3% of eligible voters having cast their votes, meaning one in three eligible voters bothered to vote. Preliminary election results for Waikato District Council showed Allan Sanson has been reelected as Mayor.

However, while the top jobs in the region stayed the same, there are a swathe of new faces on the local community boards and the Auckland Council itself. Former member of the Franklin Local Board in Wairoa, Bill Cashmore has been elected to the sole councillor role for Franklin, taking over from Des Morrison who retired at these elections. He had alarge majority over fellow Wairoa candidate Dr Lyn Murphy, and over the youngest of the three candidates, journalist Niko Kloeten of Pukekohe. An inaugural member and past chairman of the former Clevedon Community Board in 1989, Bill went on to serve as a co-opted member of the former Auckland Regional Council’s Re-

Bill Cashmore, with wife Lynnette. Bill is the new councillor for Franklin.

Fun and funds Friday morning was a special time at the Pukekohe Mitre 10 Mega Cafe as a Pink Breakfast was held to raise funds for Breast Cancer Awareness. PAGE Amid the humour and dress-ups was a serious message.

Well, the local elections are over for another three years, and it is a critical time for the community to make the local representatives aware of the issues that count in Franklin, and find some way of ensuring our thoughts are heard. We are a long way from the heart of Auckland, and perhaps easily forgotten in terms of our needs and wants as an area. The relatively small infrastructure needs required for our area pale into insignificance beside the billions of dollars that are set to be ploughed into the main part of Auckland in terms of public transport. Yet transportation is, and has been for many years, one of the key issues for rural areas. A review of our transport services is underway, and candidates for the Waiuku Local Board notedx during the election period that a trial bus service either to Pukekohe or Papakura is on the cards in the near future. It has been suggested that, if it is not patronised enough, that this could be the last time for many years we see a similar trial. While that is reasonable, we should also be asking for parity with subsidies applied to transport in Auckland. Suggestions that a Waiuku bus service has to break even should only be listened to if the same logic is applied to the rest of Auckland. Figures suggest public transport in Auckland is costing ratepayers almost 30c per passenger kilometre in subsidies. While this needs to improve, we also need representatives willing to argue that we should be entitled to a fair share of the subsidies that our rates go towards.

Local hospital needs more development I am well aware of the sterling work done at Franklin Memorial hospital. However It is really a geriatric facility with some hospice beds. It was and remains an asset – an out of date asset worthy of Florence Nightingale or perhaps Jane Austin but it needs money spend on developing it. There will be many – especially the plutocrats in the private sector who would rather the money was spent on them – where they can control and benefit from it. The hospital needs to be bought up to date as an out patient facility with endoscopy, X Ray etc and Day Stay surgery. Waiuku is badly served in this capacity.

Geoff Smith, you hide behind the excuses of clinical support and safety. The real explanation is convenience for private practice. The fact that Waiuku is a growing town (look around you) and no long term public hospital development is taking place is no credit to Counties Manukau Health. Forty Five Kilometers is quite a long way. I find the comments by Geoff Smith on transport patronizing, unimaginative and out of touch with reality. Yes I have had occasion to use it gladly and gratefully but the year now is 2013. Bruce Brownlee. Waiuku.

Mayor to meet locals in Pukekohe Len Brown is heading to Pukekohe for his first Mayor in the Chair event in his second term as Mayor of Auckland, on Thursday 24 October. Mayor in the Chair sessions are regular, one-hour lunchtime events held in different areas around Auckland, when locals can pull up a chair and have a brief one-to-one chat with the Mayor about any topic they wish. “I always enjoy coming out to Pukekohe – it was great to be there for the A&P show in February, the V8s in April, to switching on the new water supply and congratulating the mighty Steelers just recently.” “At my last Mayor in the Chair in Pukekohe, I discussed everything from noise limits, to CCTV cameras, business and local herit-

age buildings – and got a great grilling from the year 13 social sciences class at Pukekohe High. I am looking forward to setting up my chairs again and hearing locals’ concerns and aspirations for their community and wider Auckland.” “I always value the chance to chat to people about their experience of Auckland, be they residents or visitors. “Whether someone pulls up a chair at these events or just stops me on the street, it’s always a welcome chance to share my passion for Auckland and how we can make it better for everyone who lives, works, studies and plays here.” The Mayor will set up his chairs at Pukekohe Library from midday until 1pm on Thursday 24 October.

New faces on local boards after Saturday’s elections Continued from page 1: The Pukekohe subdivision of the local board saw current Chair Andy Baker elected as the highest polling candidate, but Sarah Higgins, new to the candidacy, was perhaps the surprise package, polling the second highest. The two were joined by Alan Cole and Murray Kay. The Wairoa subdivision was won by Angela Fulljames, with Malcolm Bell and Lyn Murphy gaining the other two available spots. In Waiuku the big surprise was the ousting of long-time local candidate Daniel Lynch, who, after 30 years in local politics, found himself beaten at the post by incumbent Jill Naysmith and Brendon Crompton, who is making a return to local politics after sitting out the last elections. Daniel said it was disappointing, and surprising to see the result, adding that he believes the elections showed the intrusion of

party politics into local government, something which he says has not been evident in the Franklin region before. He said yesterday his perception was that Team Franklin was essentially a team for the National Party, and also pointed to the efforts of the Conservative Party in the area, represented by Rick Drayson, which Daniel says is a sign of the political parties using local government elections to raise their profile. Daniel says, while he has ruled out making a return to the candidacy in the future, he still feels as though there are things he has left unfulfilled at a local board level, but says he will now be able to devote more time to his wife Marie and to his golf. He is still involved in a number of local community groups and projects and says after Christmas he will have a look at some other local initiatives that he may be able to help out with.

ƒÂ? Â?  Â?Â? Above: John Danes and Joey Griffiths from the Waiuku Volunteer Fire Brigade, along with young Bailey Given and Phil Faidley, Fire Risk Management Officer for the Counties Manukau Fire Area. There was a special moment in Waiuku last week as members of the local volunteer fire brigade joined Fire Risk Management Officer Phil Faidley to install a special smoke alarm system for primary school student Bailey Given and her family. Bailey is hearing-impaired, and had her first hearing aid at the age of four, later having a cochlear implant, but if she is asleep and not wearing her hearing aids she can’t hear the traditional smoke alarm. While the family have smoke alarms fitted, the question of how to ensure Bailey could be included in everyone in the family being aware when an alarm went off was raised. This led to enquiries with the fire service, and the result was that a funding agency was able to help with the costs of a specialised unit, as a special case, and last week the erquipment was installed. While funding is available through organsiations for smoke alarms and systems for the hearing-impaired, generally the criteria is that they are living independently and are over the age of 16. The decision by an agency to assist for Bailey was good news not only for the Given family, but also for local fire education officers John Danes and Joey Griffiths. As John says, he has been visiting local primary schools and kindergartens speaking about fire safety for around 10 years, and fre-

quently gets asked what happens if people can’t hear the alarm. Up until now, he has always explained that the fire service has other options available, but had never actually physically handled the equipment himself. The system is a wireless transmitter connected to a smoke alarm, and looks very similar to a standard home alarm. When the system ‘smells’ the smoke, it sends a message to a unit similar to a small clock-radio, which in turn connects to a vibrating pad which is kept under the pillow. The clock radio unit flashes a strobe light, and the vibration is enough to wake the sleeper. One of the best things about the unit, as Phil Faidley explained last week, is that it is totally transportable. The components can be easily collected and taken to a friend or family members house if Bailey is staying the night somewhere else. Phil has developed a special interest in working with the deaf community through Deaf Aotearoa New Zealand and RNZFB with their deaf/blind service, and finding ways to reduce the barriers for service for these groups. The end result of a joint effort has been another barrier broken down, a very happy young Bailey, and a further sense of security for a Waiuku family.

Hi, I hope everyone has had a good last couple of weeks and the weather hasn’t been to variable for you. Last time I mentioned Karioitahi Beach. I will repeat my message: It is a road, and if you have any vehicle on it, it needs to be warranted and registered. Complaints are being received, therefore NO off-road motorbikes will be tolerated, nothing in the main swimming area, and certainly none of those four-wheelers. Yes I appreciate that kids use these, and they are also used by responsible people but there is too much noise, injury and crash potential. It is going to be patrolled, and we will be ticketing, impounding and stopping people riding or driving on the beach. Due to a few idiots we are going to have to take this firm line. It is disappointing if you are a law abiding citizen, just wanting to have ride along the beach, but it’s about stopping

anything before it gets out of hand. Whether it is an injury, accident, near miss or people taking the law into their own hands. A few drivers have been stopped over the past few weeks not wearing a seat belt. This is a safety issue, and is one of the causes of deaths in car accidents. It is not difficult to make it click. Remember if you are a parent then it is your responsibility to ensure your kids are properly buckled up, in other words the ticket is yours, not the child’s. Another contributing factor to road deaths is drink driving. A 28 year old female was stopped the other day. The legal limit is 400. She had a level of 1087. This is a horrendously high level and is not the first time she has been caught drink driving. Due to her level she had her licence instantly suspended for 28 days. This is a timely reminder that it is everyone’s responsibility to stop people

Even though they did not have any sinister intent, they all received formal cautions for being unlawfully on property. Police went to speak with a 51 year old intoxicated female on Queen Street. A year of highlights for Strathallan 150 years at Alexandra Redoubt To conclude a year of successes, Strathallan’s 1st XI Boys Hockey team will play a team of past students to celebrate the opening of the school’s new international standard hockey turf this Wednesday at 4pm. The occasion will be a fitting end to a well-played season of hockey for Strathallan teams. For the first time in the history of the school, the 1st XI Boys team was the winner of the Counties Manukau Secondary School Hockey Boys A-Grade Championship. The team also placed third in the North Harbour – Counties Manukau Invitational Intercity competition, finishing as the highest placed Counties Manukau team. Following these successes, the team represented Counties Manukau in the Midlands Intercity Division One competition, which included the top schools from Counties Manukau, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Tauranga and Thames Valley. Strathallan achieved a fourth placing in this competition, again the topplaced Counties Manukau school. During the 2013 Secondary School Tournament Week, the team took part in the Mayhill Cup, a third-tier tournament to which the team was promoted to last year.

After a single loss to the competition runners up, and a draw to the tournament winners, Strathallan finished third overall, an improvement from last year. A highlight for the team was beating local rivals, Pukekohe High School, on the final day in the play-off for third/fourth place. The Boys 2nd XI also had a good year, ending third Counties Manukau Second-Round A-Grade Competition, where they competed against several 1st XI teams from other schools. The Boys 3rd XI made history by winning the second round of the Counties Manukau Second-Round B-Grade Competition – an impressive feat for a team with several new hockey players. Strathallan 1st XI Girls were runners-up in the Counties Manukau First-Round Competition, and placed third in the Counties Manukau Second-Round A-Grade Competition. With a Year 7/8 team also competing in the Counties Manukau club competition, it is encouraging to see the growth of the sport at Strathallan College. Now with a turf already trialled by the New Zealand Junior Black Sticks, and open to the hockey community, this growth is set to continue.

Tuakau turned out for the 150th Anniversary of the founding of Alexandra Redoubt, which today is a major historic place for the district. Pictured above, the 65th Regiment re-enacting their role in the

Youth wanted for advisory board The Franklin Youth Advisory Board is looking for six passionate, community-minded young people to become new members. “The Youth Advisory Board would really suit young people who are interested in youth affairs, social issues, events and leadership,” says chairperson Sarah Summerscales. The Board seeks to replace six members whose terms have ended. The Youth Advisory Board is involved in community events and youth affairs in Franklin, and advises the Franklin Local Board on issues of youth significance. The Board works with a range of people from all across the community, and is able to truly have input into what the Council offers

locally for young people. This year, board members have spoken at Anzac Day events, planned public transport improvements, began work on a Pukekohe skate park and organised successful events including the annual Pukekohe Children’s Day celebration. Applicants must be aged between 14 and 18, live or go to school in Franklin, and be able to attend weekly meetings in Pukekohe during the school term. The Board would particularly like to hear from Year Tens and Elevens, and young people living in Clevedon, Wairoa and east Franklin. Applications close on Monday, October 28 at 5:00pm. For further details go to the Franklin Youth Advisory Board’s facebook page.

New World ‘owners’ meet

New World supermarkets throughout New Zealand have been running a successful promotion to collect miniature products detailing some of the range available, with youngsters swapping pieces to try to get the whole set. Waiuku’s Jaidah Puru has managed to collect all the pieces and her great-grandfather John van der Star built a mini New World to hold the collection. Last week, Waiuku New World owner Lex Mills caught up with Jaidah to offer his congratulations and the pair had a chance to discuss their respective operations. Lex says there will be a ‘swap day’ announced shortly at the store where people can trade their items to complete their collections.

Tuakau distance runner plans 500km charity run Tuakau ultra-distance runner, Kim Allan, will attempt a women’s World Record-breaking run this December. The 47 year-old will run a circuit in the Auckland Domain without sleep, aiming to cover 500 kilometres. The “Sleepless In Auckland” run is expected to take somewhere between 80 and 85 hours and will take place between December 19 and 23 this year. Kim is a single mother of four and left school at age 15 to become an apprentice jockey. During her career she experienced a few injuries, including a fractured skull and more recently a broken leg which left her with a slight limp. She took medical advice to walk extensively to overcome the limp and in February 2010 entered the local Pukekohe half marathon. From there she graduated to walking a section of The Great Lake 100km Circumnavigation. This is held around Lake Taupo and attracts walkers from

around the world. The following year she walked it solo in 13 hours. Her first 24 hour races was also in 2011, running the Sri Chimnoy circuit in the Auckland Domain, part of which will form the circuit for this year’s World Record attempt. She ran the same 24 hour event in 2012, covering over 187 kms in the time. This year she completed the Steenbergen World Championship 24 hour run, covering 204 kms and finishing 133th overall and the 39th female. Kim’s run will also raise funds for the New Zealand Spinal Trust, a registered charity which supports Kiwis with spinal cord impairments (from accident or illness) to get back on track and living life to the full. CEO of the New Zealand Spinal Trust, Ben Lucas, said Kim’s offer to raise funds came after she learned that Claire Donachie, who was a fellow jockey, sustained a spinal injury after

falling from a horse. They have since become friends. “Kim made her first attempt at the women’s record last year and got to over 370 kilometres before she had to withdraw because her body could not go any further without sleep. She was also running with severe blisters,” said Mr Lucas. “This year we have made contact with the London Office of the Guinness Book of World Records to register Kim’s run as an official world record attempt. We’re expecting advice on the terms and conditions required to achieve this status in the next few weeks.” The women’s record is presently held by U.S. runner Pam Reed, who ran 486 km in 2005 in just over 80 hours. Ben Lucas said runners will be invited to provide support for Kim during her 80-plus hours, and at the same time they’ll raise additional funds for the NZ Spinal Trust.

Waiuku to have a blast with 15,000 visitors expected Waiuku’s popular “Blast to the Past” family fireworks evening is happening again on Friday November 1 from 6pm. Waiuku Town Centre manager says this year’s event is set to outdo even last year’s mammoth extravaganza. “Put it on your calendar and don’t miss it! This promises to be a fantastic town party with something for everyone. “Last year the event attracted fifteen thousand people into Waiuku and was an amazing spectacle.” The main street will play host to a variety of market stalls offering everything from local art and crafts to clothing and food stalls. “There will be live music, exciting family entertainment and you can even take in the street atmosphere while dining out-doors ‘plaza’ style at one of the cafés,” Sharlene says. The entertainment kicks off at 6pm in the town cen-

tre with an exciting line-up of acts featuring ‘Mr Bean’, various entertainers and local band Rhythm Express. The huge 25 minute fireworks display will start at approximately 9.15pm on the Tamakae reserve. “We are hoping festival goers will kindly contribute a gold coin donation each to support the Waiuku Information Centre which is currently run by a few dedicated volunteers,” Sharlene says. “Without these wonderful volunteers and the Waiuku Business and Development Association, (which is notfor-profit), this crucial service could not be provided to promoting our town to visitors and giving us a community centre. “The funds collected will also be used to purchase Emergency Response signs for our community in case of a disaster. “The Guides will be collecting your donations during the evening so please

support this cause,” Sharlene adds. The major sponsor for the fireworks display is Lex and Karen Mills of Waiuku New World who are contributing $20,000 for the pyrotechnics display. The Waiuku Business & Development Association and Top Hat Magic have also donated sponsorship for the event. “After a lot of thought Lex and Karen have decided to retire and sell the New World business, but will remain living in the area. “I’m sure everyone in Waiuku would agree that Lex and Karen have done so much for our community and their support for this event will be sorely missed. “We want to make this wonderful family event better a great send off for them and hope the community gets in behind it, as this may be the last unless we can secure a new sponsor for next year,” says Sharlene.

“With the nature of this event, public safety is very important to us. The business association and council, with the advice from Dept of Labour (OSH), have implemented a safety plan to try to ensure everyone’s safety at the event. “On Tamakae reserve and around the fireworks firing zone there will be areas cordoned off, safety signage and security guards in place. There will also be a strong police presence at the event.

We ask that the public please respect and abide by the safety advice in place.” Bowen Street will be closed off from 4.30pm and Queen Street, from the ASB corner down to the Kentish Hotel, will be closed from 5pm. People need to move their vehicles from those areas before then to make way for festival activities, otherwise they will be locked in for the evening or their vehicle may need to be removed.

The King St By-pass will be closed off at 8.45pm until the event is over to ensure event goers safety and enable easy pedestrian access to the reserve before and during the fireworks display. Parking will be available in the Waiuku Business Park and in the old New World carpark on Kitchener Road. Sharlene says this event is going to be something massive for the community. “Bring the whole family for a fantastic fun night out!”

Below: Town Centre Manager Sharlene Druyven with assistant Vanessa, Pyrotechnics expert BJ of Top Hat Magic, and Lex Mills of Waiuku New World.

ou’ve made the big decision, you said “yes”. Planning a wedding several months in advance will ensure you will both have “the most beautiful day of your lives”. First of all, you should work out a budget. This should include everything which must be bought or rented. Then you should fix the date to start enquiring about venues. The reception is certainly a crucial element - Choosing the right place to gather with your loved ones is no small task. On the day of the reception, you will want everything, from the service to the general ambiance and the decorations adorning the tables, to meet the highest standards. To have the perfect location and the best caterer, you might have to make your reservations a year or more in advance. Depending on the season, many of the choicest venues are reserved a long time in in advance, usually several months or even years ahead of time. This means it’s important to decide on the kind of place you’d like as soon as possible and to start

looking without delay. In order to avoid disappointment, start phoning suitable venues as soon as you become engaged. Be sure to make an appointment to visit any places you think would be suitable. Bear in mind that it is wise to choose a place that is not too far from where family and friends live. Another factor to weigh is its proximity to your church. If you prefer an outdoor wedding, the biggest challenge in organizing an outdoor wedding is the unpredictability of the elements. This is why it is so important to have a Plan B in case of bad weather. Because of this, you will not only have to choose the right location, you will also have to coordinate all the necessary logistics in order for your reception to be a success. No matter your budget, the Franklin area offers plenty of alternatives for a wonderful wedding party.

He has finally proposed - Then your top priority is to do a bit of bragging and tell everyone the good news!

1

Establish your budget per guest. In fact, this is the perfect time to draw up your guest list.

2

Order your invitations, being careful to include your names, the date, time, and place of the wedding and reception, as well as the date by which you need to receive replies. Be sure to include stamped, addressed envelopes if you can.

3

The reception hall is often one of the biggest expenses, so be sure to reserve one as quickly as possible.

4

Creating a good atmosphere is just as important as choosing a caterer, although you don’t want to skimp on food either. To cut costs, consider serving fewer courses, with a focus on excellent quality instead of quantity.

5

Make up or order wedding favours for your guests. These are put with their place setting or offered at the end of the reception. Let your imagination run wild: you could offer small homemade soaps, candles, local produce in mini format, bath pearls, or small boxes of candies.

6

Give yourself enough time to find a wedding gown that really suits your personality. It is also possible to rent a dress for the occasion, much as your beloved can buy or rent his suit.

7

Book your hair, make-up and manicure appointments several weeks before the wedding. If possible, plan a test run.

8

Put all your heart into writing down the vows that you would like to make during the marriage ceremony. If you plan to make a speech at the reception, be sure to get that down in writing as well.

9

Plan the reception down to the last detail: create the atmosphere you like with suitable music, entertainment, and a décor that matches your personality. (Don’t forget to decorate the bathrooms, a place everyone will see at some point!)

Finding a caterer

Giving wedding candy and choosing the right wines is a thoughtful gesture that your guests are sure to appreciate.

C

andy has been a part of weddings for centuries. The traditional treat offered to guests is the sugared almond, a symbol of pleasure, happiness, and prosperity. Still a favourite at weddings today, sugared almonds are a wink to the past and are, at the same time, a sign of refinement and elegance.

An all important decision

Quick Tips..

• Establish a budget before meeting with a caterer and stick to it. • Make a list of questions to ask • Request a sampling of menu item choices

A delicious meal will be remembered by your guests, so do your homework before making your choice

Sugared nuts are known in French as dragées, the name North American bakers now give to the tiny, round silver candies used to decorate wedding cakes. If you’re a stickler for the real thing, though, handfuls of almonds delicately coated with smooth, glossy sugar are beautiful when scattered on tables or served in decorative bowls with cocktails. Plan for a kilogram of sugared almonds for every 20 to 30 people. If you order your dragées from a candy maker, be sure to order them at least two or three months in advance of the wedding; the real thing takes about ten days to make!

Finding a caterer for your wedding is just one of the tasks that need to be arranged, but it is a fundamental one. Ideally, you want the best, but the “best” is what is considered best for you and your personal needs. So decide beforehand what your expectations are in a caterer as there are several things to consider that will help you make your choice. Begin by inviting estimates for various menus. Don’t hesitate to question the caterer on different points: is he or she experienced in wedding banquets? How many other weddings will they be catering that weekend? Are they classic or creative? It is wise to make an appointment with your caterers to taste both the wine and the dishes they are proposing. If you still can’t make up your mind, base your decision on the style of your wedding, the time of year, or the place you have chosen for the reception.

Although tradition calls for wedding candy to be given as gifts to all the guests, there are plenty of other options available. Aside from the clas-

A Marriage of Food and Wine For starters, consider what flavors, styles and varieties of foods you will be serving at the reception, then you can pair specific wines with the selected foods to bring the unique flavors out the best. bride’s hairstyle is essential to the look she wishes to create for her wedding.

Giving

Some of your guests will give you wedding gifts that are not on your wedding registry. However, the majority prefer using your registry because they know this list of articles corresponds to your specific needs and personal taste. Make your list a bit longer than the number of invited guests, as this will allow a certain leeway in the selection of items your guests will wish to offer you as gifts. Choose small and practical gifts. Offer articles that range in prices that will be suitable for any kind of budget, even the smallest. Do a tour of the boutiques and shops in your area, and pick the one which has items that most closely match your list. Complete your wedding registry at least one month before your first bridal shower. Inform your parents and close friends so that they can advise your other guests where you are registered and how to access your wedding registry. Consider: Vanilla

Choosing among this year’s trends is one way to find the perfect style. The classic bun is a popular choice, especially because it fits with the retro chic trend. Brides with fine hair can opt for a cut and style, with a square cut or a plunging bob. If they want to keep their hair long, extensions are ideal for filling out some volume. Tiaras or headbands are lovely; some wrap partially or completely around the head and come decorated with flower and leaf patterns, curves, arabesques, pearls, or Swarovski crystals. Such jewels are as perfect in loose hair as they are with loose braids or buns. With the help of your hairdresser, you can create the hairstyle you’ve always dreamed of. Be sure to make an appointment well ahead of your wedding day for a consultation about options and styles. Consider: Redz. Treating yourself to a professional makeup session will ensure that you shine just the way you want to on this beautiful day. On your wedding day, you want your makeup to accent your natural beauty. Concentrating on your natural colour, your eyes and your mouth, your beautician

will be able to help you create a small masterpiece. Make an appointment with a professional cosmetician as early as possible and be sure to plan a trial session to avoid any disappointment the morning of your wedding. Before then, keep in mind the basic beauty secret for good skin: drink lots of water, gently exfoliate to get rid of dead skin, and moisturize the skin morning and night. Consider: Belle of the Ball.

Picture Perfect Dress for Success Stylish Shoes... For an event as important as a wedding, it is

absolutely essential to dress in an appropriate manner and appear well groomed. FOR HER: For the bride or even the mother-in-law for that matter, choosing a dress to suit your body type is imperitave. Thousands of different styles and models of wedding gowns are available on the market, one more beautiful than the next, however knowing your body type will help in finding the style of dress that will best suit you. No matter what your body type, let your instincts guide you towards the dress of your dreams. Don’t hesitate to ask for a few extra adjustments from the shop’s seamstress so that you will feel completely comfortable. Consider: Magazine Designer Clothing. FOR HIM: On the wedding day, it may be true that all eyes are on the bride, but a welldressed groom will still be appreciated. A classy and unique suit is on the agenda; one that he feels comfortable in, one that corresponds to his personal style and that is tailored to his body shape. For an impeccably fitted suit, the groom should have a last fitting at the tailor’s, two or three weeks before the wedding. He is one of the main stars of this celebration, after all! If the groom sets the tone for the evening in his choice of wardrobe, it is with the small touches that he distinguishes himself. An assortment

of accessories in different colours and styles is always a wise choice. A tailored shirt is a distinguished touch; and a coloured shirt can be quite striking, if it’s in keeping with the colour scheme of the wedding. Keep in mind that a shirt made of natural fibres will not only look better; it will be more comfortable. Cufflinks can complete the overall look with a touch of class. Regardless, the groom must absolutely avoid wearing an outdated. His suit must fit perfectly. By choosing a supple fabric that adapts to the body, the suit will fit better. Consider: Lewis for Menswear.

In all your pre-planning, don’t forget to shop for your honeymoon. Consider: David Mills for luggage & Cavalli Interios for leisure wear.

For Him: It is said that every ceremony requires polished shoes, especially, when the ceremony is a wedding! That is why patent leather shoes are the most popular choice and, while they generally complement any suit the groom wears, they are an absolute requisite for a white tie event.

Bridal shoes can make or break a wedding for a bride. Not only does the right shoe have to match the bride, the day, and the dress, but it must be comfortable enough to wear throughout the ceremony, photo session, and reception formalities. Consider: Halliwells

Quick Tips..

• Do you have an hourglass shape (shoulders & hips of equal width, with smaller waist)? You could treat yourself to a “mermaid” gown that accentuates your curves. • For apple or V-shaped figures (shoulders broader than the hips), look for an empire waist or A-line dress which will balance your proportions. • If your hips are wider than your shoulders, you have a pear or A-shaped figure. Look for an A-line style and avoid a straight or mermaid dress that draws eyes where you don’t want them to be. • When your shoulders, hips, and waist are all of a similar width, you have a straight or I-shape. Avoid a straight dress, opting for an A-line or princess style or one with a bodice, which will create a more curved effect. • If you’re petite, look for a simple dress without too many frills. Belts should be avoided, as they will cut your silhouette in two where a lengthening effect would be

Are you thinking of saving money by asking your brother-in-law to take your wedding pictures? Ask people who didn’t use a professional photographer if they have any regrets, and you’ll soon understand that photography is one area where it doesn’t pay to skimp. Your wedding marks an important transition in your life. Don’t let the magic fade away; make sure that your memories remain unforgettable. Choosing a professional photographer means ensuring that your photos will be of exceptional quality, and that they will be taken with discretion during the ceremony. An experienced photographer will pay attention to all the details, taking photos at the appropriate time and place. Check the photographer’s portfolio to ensure that the pictures are of excellent quality, with superior colour reproduction and angles that are to your liking. If you also decide to immortalize your wedding on video, be sure to obtain top quality images and sound. You should select a company that provides qualified, experienced personnel and high-quality equipment. Consider: Wendy & Chris, Bride & Zoom, Casey Van Liefe & Execam. Finally Framing Shed for framed prints.

Flowers: a key element of any wedding

In many people’s minds, a successful wedding event often rests on the choice of flowers. The most beautiful of Mother Nature’s offerings, they are essential for setting the tone of the day. The trend is towards smaller bouquets and less imposing floral centerpieces on the tables. Vases are appearing in all shapes, sizes, and materials: ceramic, zinc, glass, and stoneware, for example. Regardless of the colors, tradition still rules the size of a bouquet. Choose a simple bouquet if your outfit is fairly ornate. If your gown is simple, exoticism and creativity can run wild. Round bouquets go well with tapered dresses, and cascading bouquets are perfect for gowns with trains.

Future brides and grooms don’t always realize just how much time they will have to devote to organizing their wedding. From the moment your engagement is announced, many hours will be spent making innumerable decisions and countless appointments. But don’t worry: you can save an amazing amount of time by dealing with local businesses. The first notes of Mendelssohn’s Wedding March fill the church and everyone turns to watch as the bride, more beautiful than ever, appears on her father’s arm. Yes, even today, most people expect this type of traditional beginning to a wedding ceremony. But if you find it all pretty boring and would like to be a bit more innovative. Do you have scottish in your blood? Perhaps a piper to escort you down the isle? On the other hand if you find that radition isn’t sacred for you, why not go down the aisle on roller blades? Consider: Pukekoke RSA Pipe Band. Part of planning for your wedding is arranging transportation. If you’re planning a simple wedding, a stylish car for the bride and groom should suffice. If the wedding is to be more elaborate, you might wants a limousine, vehicles for the parents of the bride and groom, as well as the other members of the wedding procession. Don’t forget a comfortable vehicle for your honeymoon rendevouz.

Consider: Ebbett’s, Waiuku Rental Cars Once all the pomp and ceremony are over, your evening of wedding festivities should be joyful and reflect your personal style. Whether you want the dance floor to be hopping with old fashioned swing, swaying with easy-to-dance-to classics, or swirling with Klezmer music, choosing the right DJ or band will make all the difference. Most likely, you will want a good mix of musical styles. If this is the case, a professional disk jockey might be your best bet. Consider: Franklin Party Hire. Everyone would agree that organizing a wedding isn’t an easy thing to do, and so it can be very reassuring to be able to count on people in your area to make a success of this important event. If you decide that a reception venue is not for you and you would rather do it yourself then consider Manukau Party Hire. Last by not least, since the beginning of time, diamonds have been seen as the symbol of love. Whatever type of wedding you’re planning, wedding rings are an essential part of the celebration. They are the ultimate symbol of the union between the bride and groom. Consider: Brighouse Goldsmiths. Have your rings engraved using specialist engraving equipment. Consider Top Notch in Pukekoke with their new Jewel M10. engraver.

There’s no limit except your imagination. Let yourself be influenced by the date & location of your wedding and then be inspired by your passions & your dreams to conceive a ceremony that matches your personalities. A “wow” effect will be guaranteed!

• Reception hall- Lots of options are open to you, such as a hotel reception room, restaurant, boat, vi neyard, golf club, or mar quee tent. De pending on your budget, think about the style of wedding you’d like and choose a suitable venue. Pg 2 • Caterer - When booking a caterer, don’t forget to talk about all the details of the meal. Will the kit c hen be on site? Will taxes be char ged? Can they make the cake as well? Pg 3 • Celebrant - Meet with the celebrant (priest, registrar, or other official) to en sure that he or she will be available on the date set for your wedding and to see which documents you will need to supply. Consider: Bill Deed

About six months before the wedding

• Music and MC - Now you will have to book a master of ceremonies (MC) as well as a DJ or orchestra. This is an important step, as the MC will create the mood of the evening. Choose someone who will respect your tastes and requirements. • Clothing and accessories - Now’s the time to think about purchasing and fitting the wedding dress, the groom’s tuxedo, and accessories, such as shoes. Make sure you order your wedding bands at this time. Pg 5 • Photographer - Book the services of a professional photo grapher in order to have a lasting record of your wedding day memories. Unfor tuna tely, a friend or family member, however well-intentioned, is rarely able to produce qua lity photos. Pg 7

8 & 10 seater van hire & cars from $35/day long or short term hire

• Decorations and flowers - Decorations, flowers, and the bridal bouquet should be ordered now. Ensure that the style and colours of these elements complement each other. Pg 7 • Car - Reserve the services of a chauffeur with a luxury car. Arriving in a limousine, a conver tible, or an antique car is a great way to start your big day. • Honeymoon - Lastly, spoil yourselves with a romantic in terlude to start your married life. Treat yourselves to a trip you’ll never forget. Just make sure your passports haven’t expired!

“MAYFAIR” Pukekohe man named MTA only $1999 QUEEN MATTRESS Apprentice of the Year

Following a ‘tool-off’ on Saturday October 5, Julius Bloem of Pukekohe has been named the MTA Apprentice of the Year for 2013. Julius, of E & H Motors Ltd, competed against three other apprentices to take out the title, at the competition held in Wellington. The runner-up in the competition was Jordan Andrews (Invercargill) with finalists Devon Hammond (Mount Maunganui) and Jared Wiel (Dunedin) competing for the national title. “I found the interview quite intense. I was prepared for all of the practical stuff as they’re the sort of tasks I do on a day-to-day basis, but I had never done an interview before,” Julius says of the competition. Studying towards a National Light Vehicle Qualification, Julius finds it easy to be enthused and dedicated to his career. “Even before entering the competition, I had set myself high goals,” Julius says. Earlier this year, he had noted on his pin board at home that he wanted to make the final four in the Apprentice of the Year competition – a goal that he can now tick off the list. The annual MTA Apprentice of the Year award recognises the skills and potential of talented apprentices who are taking their future into their own hands and employers who are investing in the future of the automotive industry. Hans Ruiterman, Julius’ employer, nominated him for the competition and is ecstatic that he has won. “ It has been a good morale and confidence boost for Julius, to actually enter and do well. Julius works really hard – especially with his theory work – and he takes his job really seriously. It’s nice that he can be rewarded for that,” says Hans. “He is always asking questions like ‘why did you diagnose that fault?’ or ‘what is the process here?’. He is constantly absorbing information every day.” E & H Motors Ltd has been a great place for Julius to learn a wide range of automotive skills. “We’re a shop that does things that a lot of other places don’t really touch. We do a lot of specialised diagnostic stuff as well as rebuilding engines and servicing. We are extremely diverse, and Julius has taken full advantage of that.”

Celebrations for 40 years of Waiuku SAR A large crowd gathered at the Waiuku Cosmopolitan Club on Saturday night to mark 40 years since Search and Rescue was established in Waiuku. Compered by Ted Doell, himself a foundation member of the group, the event brought together emergency services and sporting representatives from the region, as well as Coastguard New Zealand Board Members who travelled from throughout New Zealand to attend. Dean Lawrence, a Waiuku man who is now president of Coastguard NZ, spoke of the growth of the organisation and the development of the Coastguard Service, while CEO of Coastguard Northern Region, Dave Thomas, detailed the now-23 units who work within the region saving lives. Dave Thomas then made two special presentations, firstly to Jeff Millen, current president of Waiuku SAR, noting the 40-years of the group, and

then to Richard and his wife Heather, for their 40 years of service to the Waiuku SAR. Wal Cutten and Carol Hamilton were presented with Special Merit Awards for 30 years of service. Richard Udy, current secretary of Waiuku Search and Rescue, and one of the founder members at the original informal meetings in 1972 as well as holding a number of positions within the Waiuku SAR since that time, gave a speech detailing the history of the organisation. Since its establishment in 1973, following the tragic drownings of three people in the Waikato River, Waiuku SAR has to date been called out 960 times, saved more than 1600 lives, attended 96 drownings in the region, and has spent a cumulative total of 8500 man-hours on callouts. Almost 10,000 hours have been spent in training, and 7,800 hours spent educating the community, with

over 5000 students alone having been taught water and boat safety. Richard Udy was also among the first group to form the organisation that was to become Coastguard New Zealand, and noted that Waiuku, in fact, had a search and rescue organisation before CNZ was established. A speech from guest speaker Jim Coe, detailing his rugby experiences and his time in surf lifesaving was well received by the crowd, and representatives from other organisations paid tribute before the evening concluded. Below, left to right, speakers included Colin Riddle, CFO of the Waiuku Fire Brigade, Dean Lawrence, MC Ted Doell, guest speaker Jim Coe, and Karl Sutton of the Counties Sport Fishing Club. Below right: Wal Cutten and Carol Hamilton with their Speicla Merit Award. Right: Jeff Millen receives the plaque marking 40 years of Waiuku SAR from Coastguard Northern Region CEO Dave Thomas.

Bacon, eggs, and boobs! - a fun fund raiser with a serious message A 7am start on a chilly Friday morning didn’t deter high spirits, hilarity, and a brilliant fund raising effort as a Pink Breakfast was held at Mega Mitre 10’s cafe. Featuring nationally-known lifestyle gardener Linda Hallinan as guest speaker, and with a hilarious compere effort from Elton Dobson-Raitt, the breakfast drew 92 guests who donned pink, had to choose numbered bras for the raffles, and, together, raised $2200 for the Breast Cancer Foundation. Gail Littin, one of the team of organisers, said they could easily have sold twice that number of tickets, such was the interest in the event, and said she was very grateful for the outstanding support of Mitre 10 Mega, but also for the many, many local businesses who donated items for the raffles and supported the event in many ways.

“We might be part of Auckland Council now, but we are still Franklin, and we are still a community,” she said, adding that she hoped local people would make the decision to continue to shop locally, supporting those businesses and organisations who support their community. The funds raised will go towards raising awareness of breast cancer, and encouraging women of all ages to have a mammogram and ensure they get regular checks. While there has been a perception that breast cancer tends to strike at those aged 45 and over, Gail says it is a sad fact that she is aware of a number of people under the age of 40 who have been affected by the cancer. She hopes events such as Pink Breakfasts will continue to raise awareness and ensure women have their checks done.

Clockwise from above: Entrants in the ‘best dressed’ parade their styles. ‘Breast Mates’ Angela Stapp and Belinda Brown show off the front and backs of their outfits. Janet McFadden, Raewyn Fricker and Gail Littin take a short break during organising the event on Friday morning. Lynn Palmer, Lynne Alexander and Alyson Grice were in the colour scheme and theme of the breakfast. Guest speaker Linda Hallinan was appreciated by the large crowd. Compere Elton Dobson-Raitt had the ladies in stitches as he told a story of the first time he encountered a bra ‘in the flesh’ as it were!

From Awhitu Primary to the stars Former Awhitu Primary School student Ailsa Carroll received a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity earlier this year to become one of only two New Zealand teenagers to be accepted into the 2013 Space Camp at the US Space and Rocket Centre. In this article, she details her experiences in her own words, as she learned to work on satellites, trained on spacecraft simulators, and was dropped into a massive water tank as part of training for a mock helicopter crash.

I am a 17-year-old Year 12 Student at Columba College in Dunedin as a boarder, where I compete in Robotics, Program, and am part of an Aeronautics club. I am also a proud graduate of Awhitu Primary School and I spend all my holidays and I also have family in the area, (ex-councillor Jock Patterson is my grandfather). I have had a life-long passion about space and science in general and currently take all three sciences alongside Digital Tech to broaden the applications of my knowledge. I applied for the International Space Camp through the Royal Society of New Zealand and was successful for one of two places to represent NZ. There was a scholarship that covered roughly 85 % of the cost, I fundraised by selling chocolates and then Otago University Computer Science Department and Information Technology Department offered a scholarship to cover the rest of my costs. I have been affiliated with them through robotics and programming and am part of the University Arduino Club (Robotics essentially). I would really encourage anyone in years 11 to 13 to apply for this opportunity next year (the application process comes up on their site when it opens, there are also many other science based opportunities available). On July 26, Don Thomas replaced my nametag and congratulated me; I was an official graduate of the Advanced Space Academy. Glancing over to the rest of my teammates I cannot help but feel anything but pride. Over the week we’ve become more than just a team, a family, and as a representative of New Zealand and a Flight Engineer for our mission I have been a key player in getting here; space camp graduation, with all 16 team members all in one piece (for the most part, at least). I must admit at the time of my application, some months before, I doubted the possibility of receiving one of two places at the camp. However on May 1, I found I had been accepted alongside Tomas Marsh (Burnside year 13 pupil from Christchurch) as a NZ candidate. On July 18, we travelled to Huntsville, Alabama. We arrived early and this provided us with the opportunity to get to know the Space Camp Campus and routine. On the first day we attended a graduation ceremony of the previous week’s space cadets and then got to look around the Davidson Center for Space Exploration. For me this was a dream come true; DCSE is home to a Saturn V rocket, the Apollo 16 capsule and other paraphernalia from the Space Race. Throughout the day other International Space Camp attendees arrived and by dinner our table held the participants from Austria, Greece, Belgium and of course, NZ. The majority of us were from overseas, however there were 2 girls from

the US, they soon decided that it was their purpose in life to introduce to all things American; Candy and sweets included! The evening of the first “official” day there was an opening ceremony; the representatives of each country spoke briefly about their nation and selected aspect of its culture. Tom, the other NZ ,representative, did a haka and I spoke briefly about the Farming history of New Zealand, or more specifically, sheep. Throughout the week we had a very busy schedule and were primarily based in teams (all who were named after influential astrophysicists or engineers). Oberth was my team and consisted of 16 like-minded individuals, representing eight countries. Due to this we were the most culturally and linguistically diverse team. The Space Race and History of The Marshal Space flight Centre activity was by far a favorite of mine as we were able to look around the DCSE again as well as try our hand on some of the museum’s simulations. These included the lunar lander and the insides of various capsules. One of the highlights was, of course, the simulations that we experienced throughout the week. Space Shot and the Centrifugeboth exhibited the physical effects of take off. Luckily (as it wasInternational Space Camp) the Aviation Challenge site allowed us to under go a series of water activities; the greatest of these was the “AC Helicopter Crash” where you had to sit in assigned seats and be dropped into the water. Once the helicopter (really a large tin with windows and doors) hit the water you had to exit it efficiently and in the correct order, meaning that the pilot left last once seeing the rest of the crew safely out. The MAT (Multi-axis Tumbler) was also awesome: though being strapped to a chair and spun in every which way direction isn’t every body’s cup of tea. A slightly more mentally challenging simulator was the EMU (Extravehicular Mobility Unit) which is what astronauts use to navigate during space walks, the, one we used didn’t have the ‘vertical’ control but we were still able to get ourselves into trouble when the task was a simple as lining up with the stairs! As the Apollo moon landings are highly ranked in the history of Space travel there was also a 1/6 Gravity Chair. Once we’d bounced round a bit a challenge was proposed; who could get the fastest time for five laps of the small moon terrain whilst exhibiting all trialed forms of “moon movement” in four laps and then one lap of your favorite (or sometimes invented) gait. Fastest time within my team was 26 seconds, sadly this wasn’t me, however I can now advise that, when on the moon, do not moon walk! We attended a series of lectures

Phone: 09 235 7835   Email: info@thepostnewspaper.co.nz   Web: www.thepostnewspaper.co.nz

covering items as diverse as Shuttle hardware, flight systems, rocket fuels and launch procedures, mission operations and checklists, error systems and life support systems. The main focus of the lectures were to prepare us for Shuttle Mission simulations that we would complete as a team. Dr. Don Thomas was the Astronaut in residence for our week and he was an amazing speaker, we also discussed the Mars Missions as well as the challenges he faced becoming an Astronaut. What I took away from his talk was to persevere; he had to apply multiple times over many years to get into the Astronaut program, every time he was turned down he would look at how he could become the ‘perfect’ candidate, including completing his doctorate, becoming a lecturer and learning how to sky dive. During the week we had four, one hour, training missions, each accompanied by a specialist training session, and an Extended Duration Mission (EDM) that took three hours. My mission positions included Flight Engineer I (in the ISS), and Mission Specialist I (on Atlantis). During the EDM I was assigned the Flight Engineer I position and completed a partial crew exchange with Endeavor when they ‘docked’ with us. These were by far the most challenging and rewarding part of camp. Each person had a strict role and if you were to fail at completing certain tasks within the time frame allowed the entire mission could blow up in our faces. Whilst a Mission Specialist I completed two ‘space walks’, the first to build a structure for a satellite dish (doing so with gloves is no easy feat) and the second to harness and repair a satellite, which was very cool, especially seeing as I was attached to a Canadarm (Canada’s very patriotic contribution to the ISS) that allowed me to maneuver around the satellite to access the control panels. If you’ve seen the movie Gravity it is the same thing as Sandra Bullock was strapped into! Graduation was a slightly emotional time; we received our wings and were finally able to wear our nametags on our blue flight suits. Team Oberth (my team) was named the most outstanding team and received a special patch to recognize this. So where to from here? To be honest I haven’t really worked out the finer points yet however I’m looking at a degree in Biotechnology,Computer Science or Engineering (Megatronics or Software) or a, combination of them all. I do know however that I want to chase my dream of being an astronaut; it isn’t as impossible as many seem to believe. Of course that is coming from me, a 17-year-old Space Camp Graduate!

Shield secure, now for the Cup! A storming first half was enough for the Counties Manukau Steelers to overcome the Southland Stags 25-7 at ECOLight Stadium, and now the Steelers will be focussing on a ITM semi-final against Wellington. Two strong performances, and the Steelers could finish the year with the Ranfurly Shield and the top provincial championship trophy in their Pukekohe cupboards. While Friday nights match was the Steelers last Shield defence of the 2013 season it also served as their final home game of the ITM Cup campaign. An untidy start by the Steelers allowed the visitors to have the first opportunity to launch their attack. After seeing off a penalty by Scott Eade attempt at three points a blunder at the back gave Counties an opportunity to pounce where Rey Lee Lo went within inches of scoring. From the ensuing phase lock Ronald Raaymakers powered over for the try much to the delight of the brave ECOLight Stadium crowd. It didn’t take long for Counties to strike again the back of a blockbusting break by the in-form Maama Vaipulu who then linked up with his captain Fritz Lee to race in and extend their lead. The Stags were looking threatening with ball in hand as they tried some pressure of their own on the home side as Keanu Kahukura went close on one occasion but the Steelers defence were proving up to the task. There was a real lengthy period where both sides were unable to post points

until Kerr stepped up to nail a penalty. Moments later the hosts capitalised in vintage Counties fashion as Lee Lo took advantage running down the touchline after their defence won a turnover and then the classy centre gave the final pass to fullback Ahsee Tuala to dot down minutes before the break. Southland had another chance after the siren had sounded but again Vaipulu, who was having a brilliant first half, was there once more creating the turnover as the Steelers went into the sheds up 22-0 The Steelers defence were tested for close to half of the second spell as the home side stood up defending staunchly. Eventually with all the possession and territory the Stags found their breakthrough when Robbie Robinson ploughed over before the referee Mike Fraser awarded the try. Although they Counties were still willing to run at every chance with halfback Kane Hancy highlighting at times with his dangerous snipes around the ruck. With the penalty mounting against the home team, Southland simply couldn’t unlock the Steelers defence which was exemplified when it appear as though Southland first five Marty McKenzie was going to cross in the corner but was bundled into touch. In the end the Steelers proved too strong for their southern rivals coming away the victors as they look ahead to the semifinal showdown against the Wellington Lions next week.

Left: Captain Fritz Lee had another top match as the Steelers locked away the Ranfurly Shield.

Waiuku Maori Sports Club retain Shield Waiuku Maori Sports Club, in atrocious weather, have managed to retain the Te Hiku O Te Ika a Maui Shield in Ngaruawahia at the annual Koroneihana (Coronation) Games. Playing at Patterson Park, the club put the shield on the line against challengers Ngaati Mahanga. In a tough match, the Waiuku combination outscored Ngaati Mahanga 44-21, with two tires each to father and son dup Kowhai and Michael Nepia, plus tries for Jack Hardie, Waka Clencie, Joe Kata and Axel Cooper. Bayden Morey scored two conversions in the match. Michael Nepia aand Jack Hardie have now added a shield challenge with the Maori Sports Club to their alreadstrong resumes as players with the Waiuku College First XV. The introduction of new blood to the team is something of

great pleasure to new coach and captain Kowhai Nepia, and he says the club is now thriving. “Having the young ones coming through now will only strengthen the team in the future. If we don’t give them the chance to step up now we may lose them and the team will die away.” The club is a family affair with Michael Nepia in the club alongside his Dad, Uncle Anthony Nepia, and koro ‘Robman’ Nepia, a former player who now is sitting as club chairman. This is the third year in a row that the club has held onto the shield, but is actually the fourth win in shield matches, as they had to win a challenger match in 2010 that gave them the right to challenge for the shield in 2011 against longtime rivals and holders of the shield since 2000, Toko Mauri. The club is already looking forward to next year, and eagerly awaiting the next challengers. Left: The growth of the netball section has been a big boost to the Waiuku Maori Sports Club. Below left: Victory in the Coronation Shield is a sweet moment. Below: Michael Nepia continues the Nepia family connection with the club.

As in many other parts of the world obesity is now recognised as being an increasing problem amongst domesticated cats and pet dogs in New Zealand. In general this problem is the result of our pets being over fed and under exercised. Over feeding includesnot only feeding your pets too much but also the feeding of inappropriate types of food such as table scraps and left overs. Other contributing factorsto obesity

in our pets include the animal’s age, breed, sex and in some cases underlying medical problems. Obesity has a negative impact on a pets life by not only reducing the animal’s life expectancy but also by predisposing the animal to health problems such as osteoarthritis, heart and respiratory problems and diabetes. Specifically designed pet weight management programmes are now available at many veterinary clinics. Such programmes incorporate regu-

lar weighing, exercise, advice and dietary changes including the feeding of modern pet foods that have been specifically formulated to help manage obesity in pets. If you require further advice upon your pet’s weight or if you wish to enrol your over weight pet in our ‘Podgy Pet’s Club’ please do not hesitate to contact us at Pukekohe/Waiuku Veterinary Centre. - By Dr John Swney Pukekohe/Waiuku Veterinary Centre

Animals, children, gather at Pukekohe church Animals, including two ducklings, gathered around Jan Wallace, the Anglican vicar of Pukekohe, last Sunday hoping to get their share of the blessing she was dishing out as the congregation remembered the life of St Francis, the patron saint of all animals. Traditionally on this day, around October 4, animals get to go to church and get a sort of red carpet treatment, as for once church is all about them. Every year it is a bit of a wait and see who’s going to turn up on the day. At St Andrew’s there were heaps of dogs this year, one cat, a teddy bear, two tiny ducklings, and two special guests a guide dog in training, and a horse. Yes, a horse. And not just any horse. PC is a retired racehorse who now lives the

quiet life in a paddock on a farm. While all other animals and humans got to be inside for the service of blessings, while PC waited outside, this meant the animals also had to share the blessing. PC on the other hand got one just for himself, while admiring beasts and humans of all ages watched on. The friendly horse also got many pats and heard friendly words spoken about how handsome he was and patient and kind to all the kids who wanted to touch him. Another animal that drew in the admirers was Charlie, the guide dog in training. He got to sit up front for a while facing the people and animals, while his trainers answered questions from the kids about the life and work of a guide dog.

Call for jumps ban ‘Charlie’ promotes blessing Two horses died at the National Jumps Day in the Waikato last month, in the last races of the jumps season, leading to calls to ban the sport. The deaths brought the total to nine horse deaths in 2013, and animal advocacy group SAFE says it is a cruel entertainment. Two horses both suffered fractures in separate races and were put down. SAFE says there is nothing to celebrate on Jumps Day. “This year’s toll averages almost two deaths a month and is a side of jumps racing that punters do not see when

Relax and chill out while your humans are on holiday. Bring a friend or two…

placing a bet,” says campaign director Eliot Pryor. “The industry does not want to talk about the casualties that occur in jumps races every year. These deaths are an inevitable part of this socalled sport. It is not a question of ‘if’, but a question of ‘how many’. This is the cruelty of jumps racing.” Horse injuries leading to euthanasia vary from burst arteries to fractured legs and spines. SAFE has monitored the casualty rate of the 2013 season and notified sponsors when horses have died in the race they sponsored. “We are confident most businesses would not wish to associate their brand with an event that kills horses,” Eliot Pryor said, adding that the organiation is calling for a ban on the sport from 2014.

‘Charlie White’, the iconic horse that has become a part of Waiuku culture in recent months, was out promoting the Blessing of the Animals at the Holy Trinity Angican Church last week.

Contractor or Employee - You decide...or do you?
