Mayor grilled from all quarters on Monday Just a couple of hours after embattled Auckland Mayor Len Brown met with councillors over issues arising from a report as to whether he had misused council resources, he was facing another grilling - this time from Waiuku College students. In his first engagement since issuing an apology to councillors over his actions, the Mayor yesterday met with the Waiuku Business Student Advisory Board to discuss transport options for the region. The students didn’t cut him much slack either, following up on questions and trying to pin him down to commitments on waterborne transport, a fairer allocation of rates funding to Waiuku, development of the Onehunga Port, processes for community consultation and the Glenbrook Vintage Railway. Student Brooke Druyven illustrated the strength of the students’ views when she pointed out that the GVR project was one of Mayor Brown’s initial ‘100 projects’, before adding that since then, nothing has happened. Mayor Brown took the questions in good spirit, encouraging the students to take on more of an advocacy role for their community, and highlighting that funding issues had to be resolved before more transport options could be developed. He indicated either a congestion charge for central Auckland, or a fee for

driving on main arterial routes looked likely, as a means of meeting the shortfall in transport funds. “There’s not enough rates, and not enough taxes,” he said - a statement which appears unlikely to win many friends. He did say he supported development of the Port of Onehunga, and admitted Waiuku’s public transport options were ‘not perfect at the moment.’ “The service levels aren’t there,” he said. Earlier in the day, the Mayor had released a statement regarding the chief executive’s report into the activities of the mayoral office. “We had a full, frank and robust discussion and I have offered a full and unconditional apology to Councillors,” he said. “I understand the frustration and disappointment that Councillors feel. I realise that I have a good deal of work to regain their trust and rebuild our working relationships in the interests of Auckland. This is my focus, starting today.” He started that focus with a productive and informative meeting with the students yesterday, but the issues still swirling around the council were evident as he left the College building to face questions from waiting television media over the report and whether he was confident in retaining his job.

In response to your correspondent Paul White, (Mr Know-it-all by all accounts!) who states “We (the Royal we I take it?) understand that it causes distress to animal owners who don’t keep their animals sheltered but these people need to understand ....” These people need to understand ...? Whatever Mr White! Yes, it does cause me great distress to see my ageing dog sheltering under the bed, salivating, shaking, unable to eat/drink anything and be utterly inconsolable as soon as the first firework goes off. But I know it causes him even more distress, even after having been administered 35mg of Valium to get him through each night of hell. (Nor-

mal human dose 5mg). My dog could under no circumstances be considered “not sheltered” - he lives inside the house with us. We are subjected to this for not just one night. Then we’ve got Christmas and yippee, New Year’s Eve to look forward to - I can hardly wait! Allowing all and sundry to handle incendiary devices (whatever the size or magnitude) is madness Mr White - as you yourself should acknowledge as a professional pyrotechnician? Your condescending attitude does you no favours. Oh and by the way, for your information, I don’t do Facebook! Lesley Barrett Pukekohe

As a concerned person re fireworks I would like to reply to the letter Mr Paul White wrote. He says, and I quote ,“I get annoyed at the facts thrown around willy nilly each year so lets get some facts right” unquote. They are his facts, agreed, but my facts are that when people have fireworks it is for the enjoyment of the family, but what about the fact that animals are injured as well as people. Sadly some people choose to do some terrible things to animals and each other more so stupidly than with wise intent. What about the poor puppy who had fireworks put in his mouth so that the twits who did it could see what would happen? Enjoyment? No I don’t think so. What about my twenty or so animals that ripped out most of their ear tags because of fireworks, enjoyment? Yeah right.

Most of us don’t want to rain on others parades, we want suitable venues to go and enjoy some time watching the professionals put on a display. He goes on to say that quote “we understand it causes distress to animal owners who don’t keep their animals sheltered”, Er, how do I and others shelter stock and horses? Any reasonable ideas would be welcome, and as for ruining the happiness of others that is not what people are ‘moaning’ about. Mr White, animals have a right too, personally and I say personally I couldn’t care a jot about fireworks money spent that most can ill afford. Ban them, as others say, and yes, facebook is one way to get that message out there. Go for it people, get them banned. Michele Capper Waiuku

I was working in my garden when I heard a noise, I looked up – three horses, two riders in the leased onion paddock, I was shocked. I asked who gave them permission to be in my paddock? Was told the growers didn’t mind them riding in their paddocks. The grower who leased the 15 acres from me for onions, said NO WAY!! Diseases are spread from one place to another. My cattle where not happy either. Asked two other growers who said they are not happy to have horses in their paddocks. I asked if I had done to them what they were doing to me how would they feel. Alarmed over articles What’s happening to the Post? I’m a little alarmed at the tone of articles and editorial that seems to be creeping into the Post. Can we please have some balanced and informed coverage on the issue of deep sea oil drilling, the removal of mangroves and last week’s scare mongering coverage on assessing cultural impact. It’s really easy to do, when you cover a community story, make sure you also get comment from those in the community who don’t support the removal of mangroves, deep sea oil drilling and ask for comment from local Iwi Ngati Te Ata for their perspective on section 6(e) of the RMA PART 4-DEFINTIONS-C. Community seeks fix for ‘scary’ rural road Residents of a rural road in West Franklin are appealing for Auckland Council to take action before someone is seriously injured. Lesley Cotter is spearheading a campaign by residents of Taurangaruru Road to have one part of the road repaired over concerns that the combination of a narrow road, a blind corner and a tricky camber are going to lead to a serious collision. The issue has festered for around 15 years, with requests made initially to Franklin District Council, and latterly to Auckland Council, following amalgamation. Residents in the area say there are a number of concerns, particularly with school buses, milk tankers, stock vehicles and horse floats, along with cars, meeting on the narrow portion of the road. The issue has been

raised with Fonterra as a safety concern for its drivers, and reports are understood to be being prepared by police and local bus and transport companies. Accidents on the road have been reported, including one involving a school bus, but Lesley says work on the road has continually been put off because there have been no serious injuries or fatalities. She says the whole point is to have something done before some family has to go through the trauma and anguish of losing a loved one. Along with many residents, Lesley says she is continually being forced onto the gravel edge of the road to avoid oncoming vehicles, and says a council patch-up has only made the situation worse, with a slightly wider piece of tarmac suddenly ending as the corner approaches. Yesterday Lesley and other

residents were meeting at the site with Franklin Ward Councillor Bill Cashmore, and Community Board member Jill Naysmith, in the hope that some traction can be gained leading into the new year and when the school buses again start using the route.

Lost/Found Waiuku Police are holding the following items which have been recovered at the station: From October is a child’s yellow bike, found at the old New World site, and a yellow plastic mailbox, found on Maioro Road. In November, a child’s spiderman bike was found in Matai Street, and a horsehead tiepin found in Sandspit Road. December saw an I-Pad found in Bowen Street.

Annette Grey - thank you for the music

If music be the food of love ... then we have been abundantly blessed. There is little doubt that one of the most significant impacts my mother has had on myself and my siblings is sharing with us her love of music. We all still regularly pick up guitars, sing, play the piano, or in my brother Steven’s case the drums. And when we do, it brings us joy. But my mother didn’t just share her love of music – the way it brings people together, heals souls, brings joy and even tears at times – with us. Annette shared it with hundreds, probably thousands, of children and adults during more than three decades of music teaching in Waiuku, Pukekohe, Tuakau and further afield. Annette this year will hang up the trusty music portfolio and retire from her career as a music teacher in order to enjoy a well-earned retirement with husband of 49 years, John. My sister and I, and I know many others, think that over three decades music teaching is definitely something worth acknowledging and celebrating. On reflecting on my mother’s career as a music teacher I can’t help but hum a tune of significance to her ... and hearing her voice singing the Dolly Parton classic ‘Coat of Many Colours’: “Back through the years I go wondering once again Back to the seasons of my youth...” So what do I find from the seasons of my youth? As kids we grew up with the regular stream of children coming to our house on Otaua Road for music lessons – be it on guitar, piano, keyboard, organ, and on one occasion the piano accordion. Ringing through the house we would hear the strain of what became very familiar tunes – such as ‘Jamaica Farewell’ and ‘Michael Row the Boat Ashore’ (the one chord song every guitarist learns). Added to the tunes we would hear pupils providing excuses as to why they hadn’t practiced, often because their music books were lost all week under their bed, or trying hard to pretend they’d learnt everything but not convincing their wise music teacher. At times you’d hear a pupil exclaim ‘do I have to play that again, I played it last week’ or praise from Annette when a pupil played for her a new song they had learnt all on their own. Annette’s dedication to her pupils and teaching is evident in the longevity of her career. Believe me as a former guitar teacher who lasted only three years I

If music be the food of love... then we have been abundantly blessed, writes Sandra Grey in this tribute to her mother, Annette Grey, (pictured right), who has retired from music teaching after more than three decades teaching students from the Franklin area. know how tough it can be. My Mum is extraordinary. She is giving of her time and talent, she persists in teaching (even when pupils like her grandson Peter Grey try her patience because they refuse to practice), and she always strives to get the best out of every pupil. Some of those hundreds of pupils are now life-long friends such as Sue Wilson (nee Smith) who used to ride to our house on her horse with her guitar slung over her back. Sue’s granddaughter has recently been learning ukulele with Annette and got to go to Auckland to be part of the mass ukulele orchestra along with a handful of classmates and her very proud teacher – so it’s not just one generation of pupils that has benefited from Annette’s passion for music teaching, but now three. Annette’s time as a music teacher has involved being a strong member of the Modern School of Music and I know her teaching colleagues will miss her input at meetings and competitions. In the last decade Annette trained as an examiner for the Modern School of Music and has travelled the country and lent her expertise to even more music pupils and communities. And of course it is not just in teaching that my Mum’s love of music has manifested itself. Annette’s love of music has included decades supporting others as a musician at the Waiuku Country Music Club; winning country music awards; playing at dances with Rod McGregor and Noel Bulte; and, playing in a family band with me and brother Steven. There were performances of all types – from being a member of the Waiuku Accordion Orchestra to playing for the Waiuku Theatre Group pantomimes and

cabarets. And in her ‘spare time’ (it’s a wonder she had any given all the teaching and performances she took on) Annette would organise Friday night music evenings at the family home where we got to try out our skills with other music fanatics; and she would make sure every family occasion is filled with song – such as the family Christmas’s where she played ‘Sleigh Bells’ with my sister Linda and my recently departed Aunty Isabel. All of these things have made people smile, dance, sing-along, clap, and enjoy life a little more. But I still think the fact that she shared her ability to play music with hundreds of people is a legacy that must be acknowledged on her retirement. The greatest tribute I, my siblings, and all Annette’s pupils can pay to her is to continue to enjoy what she has taught us, continue to share her love of music and ours, and to make sure that song fills the air wherever we go. So, roll on the parties where we recall those songs taught 30 years ago. Roll on the times when I get to come back to Waiuku and sing with my Mum those old, familiar country tunes. There is no way ‘we can sing up every song that Annette knows’. And I’m sure all of you who have learnt from Mrs Grey will help to celebrate a wonderful career and join me singing one of ABBA’s hits: ‘Thank you for the music, the songs I’m singing Thanks for all the joy they’re bringing Who can live without it, I ask in all honesty What would life be? Without a song or a dance what are we? So I say thank you for the music For giving it to me.’

‘Scare-mongering’ over Unitary Plan article - letter We are dismayed by the negative coverage given in The Post of Tuesday 3 December to the Auckland Council’s Unitary Plan requirements for Maori cultural impact assessments. Such scare-mongering is unhelpful. We are very fortunate in the district served by The Post that the local iwi, Ngaati Te AtaWaiohua, have for some years had an effective consultation system for landowners to become informed about any special features on their properties, and ways of protecting them compatible with proposed land uses. In addition, kaumatua have managed Nga Tohu Kaitiaki, a project to document and place markers on some sites of special significance in cooperation with landowners, and to record digitally the known areas of environmental, historic and spiritual significance in the tribal area. The detail in the Unitary Plan is a back-up to this collaborative approach. The Historic Places Act and the Resource Management Act have for many years required local authorities to protect significant Maori archaeological sites and land forms, as well as special trees, and buildings of more recent, mainly European, significance. Admittedly some local authorities have been poor at listening to iwi who desire to protect their heritage. We can remember, less than twenty years ago, being called to help stop a Franklin Dis-

trict Council authorised bulldozer destroying one of the most significant, clearly visible historic pa sites on the Awhitu Peninsula. Times – and councils – have changed since then, and many Pakeha now see Maori cultural heritage as a treasure which enriches us all as a nation. The former Franklin District Council did a lot of work in recent years on cultural heritage protection, including the establishment of consultation procedures with all the iwi in its area. Rather than “New rules surprising homeowners”, the front page in last week’s Post should have read “Unitary Plan continues protection for Franklin’s heritage”. Tanya Cumberland and Charmaine Pountney, Awhitu -The headline was accurate - the new changes, and the scale of them, brought in largely after the first submission document was produced, were a surprise not only to landowners, but to a number of our elected representatives. It would not have been a surprise had Auckland Council seen fit to publicise these changes as they did with other aspects of the plan which became law under heritage provisions. I don’t accept that reporting the facts of the plan, as it stands, to the local community is ’scare-mongering.’ - Editor.

Uncertainty over door-to-door photo sales A Waiuku family is asking other locals to be aware that two men with English accents appear to be travelling door-to-door selling aerial photographs of local properties which the home-owners had not previously ordered. The men approached an elderly man last week, showing him the photograph and asking for $150 for the framed picture of the property. The man declined, so they reduced the price, and when he declined again they

72 Queen St, Waiuku Ph: 09 235 0645 barbsbar2013@gmail.com

dropped the price to $80 but said it would be without the frame. The family who contacted us also spoke with local police who advised them to let the Post know. While there may be a perfectly innocent explanation to the incident, the family felt it was a bit odd, especially having not requested the photo, or had even heard of the two men before, and thought they should make the community aware.

Major Pukekohe sports facility gets council approval

tful h g i l e D cials Spe m Fro

The Franklin Local Board has announced its approval for a new multisport facility at Bledisloe Park, Pukekohe. The new building is regarded as a significant part of the development and improvement of Bledisloe Park and will be beneficial for football, cricket and other groups that may use the facility. The Bledisloe Park Society, formed to co-ordinate the construction and operation of the new building, and has

secured $2,207,284 from a combination of the Franklin Local Board and a number of funding agencies. Local board chair Andy Baker said the collaboration between the Bledisloe Park Society and the local board will ensure that the construction of the new multi-sport facility is a success. “It will benefit local community networks through partnerships between the new facility and local schools, community groups and clubs,” says Mr

Baker. The development of the multi-sports building is in line with the board’s key priority to promote individual community wellbeing through participation and excellence in recreation and sport. The multi-sport double storied clubrooms will include new storage space, changing rooms, toilet facilities, tuck shop, bar, lounge, kitchen and first aid room. It will be located on the John Street side of the park.

Richard Welch, 38, was living in injury-enforced shearing retirement in Central Hawke’s Bay, when his brother talked him into having a go. He started preparing last summer, and reckons he’s ready to a fulltime shearer again. The record had not previously been claimed, but it was the biggest shearing record in New Zealand for almost nine years, since a sixstand record in Southland in 2004. It also had the unusual feature of being on both ewe

and wether lambs, the dwindling sheep flock forcing organisers to cut the cloth to suit for what is thought to have been the first mixedsex lambs record in New Zealand for more than 30 years. The record is recognised by the World Sheep Shearing Records Society which had eight judges present, including two from Australia. Among others present were two of three Australian shearers planning a merino record near Dubbo, NSW, for next April.

$2000 fine if under-18s drink without parental consent Families looking to serve alcohol to teens at home Christmas functions could face fines of up to $2000 as major changes to New Zealand’s drinking laws come into force from tomorrow (Wednesday). As of 18 December, it will be illegal to supply alcohol to anyone under the age of 18 unless you are their parent or guardian or have express consent from them. ‘Express consent’ may include a personal conversation, an email or a text message that you have good reason to believe is genuine. Passed by Parliament in 2012, aspects of the new law have been phased in throughout the year with the final changes taking effect this week. For the alcohol industry this means stricter controls on alcohol advertising and promotion, including making it an offence to promote alcohol in a way that appeals to minors, a clearer definition of ‘intoxication,’ and new alcohol licensing criteria. Supermarkets and grocery stores are now

required to display alcohol in a single area, and harsher penalties and fines are in place for serving minors or illegal promotion of alcohol. The new maximum trading hours for on-licences are 8am to 4am for bars, clubs or restaurants, and offlicences are from 7am to 11pm. However, all licensed premises with shorter hours remain bound by their current licence and cannot extend to these maximum hours. Auckland Council, Hospitality NZ, Auckland Transport and Police have worked closely together in preparing for the changes that will occur this week including a campaign on the new restriction requiring onlicences to close at 4am, which will affect up to 300 operators in central Auckland. In future, maximum trading hours for Auckland will be determined by the region’s local alcohol policy (LAP). Auckland Council is currently developing its policy with a draft being released for full public consultation in early 2014.

DECEMBER

2013

Easing the pressures of the festive season The Mental Health Foundation (MHF) is sharing ways Kiwis can ease some of the pressures of the Christmas season, and look after themselves in the process. “Christmas is a frantic time of year for many of us,” says MHF Chief Executive Judi Clements, “and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.” The MHF has rejigged their Five Ways to Wellbeing for the festive season to give Kiwis some tips on how to look after their mental health throughout the festive season and beyond. “The Five Ways to Wellbeing are deceptively simple,” says Ms Clements. “But practicing each of them gives an real boost to mental health and wellbeing.” The Five Ways are Be Active, Keep Learning, Connect, Take Notice, and Give. On the MHF Facebook page, we’ll be putting a Christmas spin on the each way to encourage everyone to make them a part of their daily routine. “Taking a walk, for instance, to admire local Christmas lights, learning about what holidays are celebrated in other cultures, connecting with those in your community who

may be feeling lonely, taking notice of little things such as Pohutukawa trees in bloom – these are all small things that anyone can do to give themselves a wellbeing-boost,” says Ms Clements. Giving is a particularly loaded term in December, and the MHF is running the Forget the Bling , Do the Whanau Thing Facebook page to remind us all that at this time of year it is our presence, not our presents, that is most important. The aim of the Forget the Bling campaign is to relieve Christmas of its overwhelming commercialism, and remind families that there are lots of low-cost or even free ways to spend time together, celebrate the season, and truly enjoy the holiday without risking getting into debt. The Forget the Bling Facebook page is updated daily with DIY gift ideas, free events around the country, and festive meal ideas for families on a budget. Vouchers are available to be downloaded from the Mental Health Foundation website, and given to family and friends on Christmas morning, to be filled in with whatever gift a person wishes to give.

Right: Charlotte Cooper and Danika Slack had a great time on the Aka Aka School float.

In spite of all drawbacks, the settlers of Waiuku, in the heart of New Zealand fern and bush, spent a happy and eventful Christmas. Both at the Episcopal Church and at the Wesleyan Chapel service was held, conducted at the former place by Mr. P. King, and at the latter by Mr. Rishworth. About 2pm there arrived at the head of the river two boatloads of men, whose weather-beaten and half-clad appearance at once proclaimed them the survivors of some sad disaster at sea. On their landing we recognised the leaders as Captain Breton and Messrs. Lodder and Dashwood, of the Waikato Heads, who, with their party, had been at sea since Monday morning, endeavouring (although unsuccessfully) to recover the Government steamer ‘Pioneer,’ which had broken from her moorings in the Waikato river. I believe they did all that men could do, even to the hazard of their lives, in their attempt to bring the vessel again into port, and it was not till she was half-full of water, her wheel gone, and she had became totally unmanageable, that they gave her up as lost. When they last saw her she was hard upon the middle bank of the Manukau bar, with every probability that she would soon become a total wreck. Captain Breton and his party received every attention at Constable’s hotel, where they did ample justice to the Christmas cheer placed before them.

Local constables on ho rseback were a favourite with th e large crowd in Waiuku.

to all our loyal shoppers for your support this year Enjoy the festive season with your loved ones

Grease sides of large heavy saucepan. Add sugar; stir in eggnog and corn syrup. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until boiling. Cook, stirring only if necessary to prevent sticking, until candy thermometer reaches soft-ball stage of 115°C, and when 1/2 tsp (2ml) syrup dropped into very cold water forms a soft ball that flattens on removal from water. Immediately remove from heat; let cool to lukewarm, without stirring. Using wooden spoon, beat in butter and vanilla, beating until very thick and no longer shiny. Quickly stir in nuts. Spread in greased 8-inch (2 l) square cake pan. Tip: If fudge sets too quickly before spreading in pan, reheat gently over low heat just until soft enough to spread. Glaze: Melt together chocolate chips and butter. Drizzle over fudge. Score into 1-inch (2.5 cm) squares while warm; let cool completely and cut into squares.

Traditional Roast Turkey

HOLIDAY HOURS: 8.30am to 7pm Monday to Friday

A 13-15 lb. (6-7 kg) turkey serves 6

• 1 turkey, with giblets • 1 onion, coarsely chopped • A sprig of thyme • 1 bay leaf • 4 oz. (113 g) salted butter • Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Lemon and Herb stuffing • 2 eggs • 4 oz. plus 1 tablespoon (130 g) butter, melted • A handful of fresh parsley leaves • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) chopped fresh lemon thyme • Freshly grated zest and juice of 1 unwaxed lemon • 4 1/2 cups (1.08 litres) fresh white bread crumbs • Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Chestnut stuffing • 14 oz. (392 g) fresh chestnuts • 1 cup (240 ml) milk • 4 oz. (112 g) sausages or sausage meat • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) olive oil • 6 oz. (168 g) turkey liver, chopped • 1 onion, chopped • 2 oz. (56 g) fatty bacon, finely chopped • 1 tablespoon (30 ml) chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley or marjoram • Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Lemon and herb stuffing: Put the eggs, butter, parsley, lemon thyme, and lemon zest and juice in a food processor and blend to a smooth purée. Put the bread crumbs in a bowl, pour over the egg mixture, and mix well. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Chestnut stuffing: Cook fresh chestnuts in a saucepan of boiling water for about 3 minutes to soften the shells. Peel them while still hot, wearing rubber gloves. Put the peeled fresh chestnuts in a saucepan, cover them with the milk, and simmer gently until softened, about 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on how fresh they are. Strain them if necessary, then weigh out 7 oz. (196 g) and put in a bowl. Crumble the cooked chestnuts with your fingers and use the sausage meat to bind them. Heat the oil in a skillet, add onion, liver, and bacon and fry gently until the liver is firm. Stir in the parsley and cook until the mixture begins to brown. Add to the chestnuts with some salt and pepper. Turkey: To make a stock, the day before put the giblets, minus the liver but with the neck chopped in half, in saucepan. Add the onion, thyme, and bay leaf, cover with water and bring to a boil, removing any foam. Reduce the heat and simmer for 2 hours, then strain. Taste and, if necessary, simmer for a little longer to reduce and strengthen the flavour. The next day, wipe out the neck area and cavity of the turkey with a damp

cloth and lightly season the inside with salt and pepper. Spoon the lemon and herb stuffing into the body cavity and the chestnut stuffing into the neck cavity, allowing plenty of room for them to expand. This is particularly important for the neck stuffing. Put half the butter in a saucepan and melt gently. Spread the remaining butter all over the skin of the turkey. Soak the cheesecloth in the melted butter and drape over the bird, with a double layer covering the drumsticks. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Put the bird in a large roasting pan in the middle of the oven. Roast for the calculated time according to size, except that the oven temperature must be raised to 400°F (200°C) and the cheesecloth covering removed for the last 30 minutes in order to crisp the skin. Remove the turkey from the oven, cover with a tent of aluminum foil, and leave in a warm place to rest while you prepare your side dishes. Using oven mitts, tip out any free juices from the cavity, then lift the turkey onto a serving platter. Pour off the turkey juices from the pan, preferably into a gravy separator or jug to be able to lift off the fat, then reheat with the seasoned stock. Serve as is or for a traditional gravy, pour juices into a pan, thicken with a small amount of flour and cook well, stirring to prevent burning. Serve with roasted potatoes, roasted parsnips, kumara, bacon rolls, cranberry relish, and Brussels sprouts.

Fruited Brazil Nut Loaves • 1 1/2 cups (375 ml) dried figs • 1 1/2 cups (375 ml) dried apricots • 1 cup (250 ml) candied pineapple • 1/2 cup (125 ml) candied cherries • 1/2 cup (125 ml) chopped preserved ginger • 1 cup (250 ml) all-purpose flour • 1 cup (250 ml) packed brown sugar • 1 tsp (5 ml) baking powder • 3 cups (750 ml) whole shelled Brazil nuts • 4 eggs • 1 tsp (5 ml) vanilla

PREPARATION: Line two 8- x 4-inch (1.5l) loaf pans with foil; grease well and set aside. Pour boiling water over figs and apricots; let stand for five minutes. Drain and chop into large pieces. Cut pineapple into chunks. Halve cherries. In a large bowl, mix together the figs, apricots, pineapple, cherries, ginger, and Brazil nuts. Stir together the flour, sugar, and baking powder; then add to the fruit

mixture and toss to mix. In separate bowl, beat eggs well; stir in vanilla. Add to fruit mixture and mix well; spoon into prepared pans. Bake in 350°F (180°C) oven for 1 hour or until cake tester inserted into centre comes out clean. Let cool in pans on racks for 10 minutes; remove from pans and let cool completely on racks. Loaves can be wrapped well and refrigerated for up to two weeks.

Last minute gifts? How about a $25,000 set of harmonicas? Restoration project

If you simply can’t think what to buy for someone this year, Amazon may have the answer - providing you have some deep pockets. Listed last week were a set of seven Hohner harmonicas, in ‘an attractive presentation case’, for $US25,000. They would be a special treat for a Dylan fan, as these have apparantly been played, and hand-signed, by the great Bob himself. Which, come to think of it, means it’s $25 grand for a second-hand set of harmonicas!

Of course, you might want something else for the kids, so there’s a five-slide playground system which includes an arch bridge, a corkscrew climber, a four-foot rock wall and a bunch of other stuff. It’s a snip at $US 31,156. Shipping costs might a bit on the steep side, we couldn’t find out what it would cost to bring it to New Zealand, but to get it shipped urgently on FedEx to Canada would set you back a further $23,000. Still, it’s not about the money, it’s the thought that counts, right?

ASK THE VET Christmas can present extra dangers for pets Send your question to: ‘Vet’s Voice’

Christmas should be a special, enjoyable time of the year for all members of the family, including our pets. At this time of the year houses are typically full of food, drink and decorations, which although they are essential items of the festive season, some such items can be harmful to pets that play with or eat them. Foods that can be harmful to cats and dogs include, chocolate, raisins, grapes, onions, garlic, avocados, macadamia

nuts and fatty foods. Also beware if your pet chews and swallows a piece of an object such as a toy, plastic wrapper, clothing, corn cob as such objects can block the animal’s digestive system, which if left untreated can be fatal for the animal. The signs that your pet may show if poisoned or has swallowed something inappropriate will vary depending upon the substance involved but include, abdominal pain, muscle tremors, weakness, loss of ap-

Masters student Mya Gaby, Pancho Villa, modelling one of the small cat cameras and Dr Heidy Kikillus.

Tiny cameras for undercover cats Whether domestic cats are preying on native birds, lizards and insects will be clearer as a result of a study being carried out by Victoria University researchers this summer. How much hunting pet cats are doing is one aspect of the project, which is funded by Victoria and the Wellington City Council and is believed to be the first study of its kind in New Zealand. The research project is a partnership with the community with cats taking part having been volunteered by their owners. They will wear a small video camera clipped to their collar for several hours twice a week to record what the animals get up to when no one is looking. The researchers—postdoctoral research fellow Dr Heidy Kikillus and Masters student Mya Gaby— will analyse footage captured by the cameras to find out more about the animals’ behaviour and activities. “The results from similar research

overseas have sometimes amazed pet owners who’ve discovered that their cats are running under cars, getting down sewers, fighting and travelling quite long distances,” Dr Kikillus says. Only cats that are used to wearing collars are being used in the study. “The cameras are tiny, weighing just 32 grams. “Providing the cat normally wears a collar, carrying a camera around too doesn’t seem to bother them.” She says confidentiality is guaranteed to pet owners taking part. “They get to keep a copy of the footage but for the purposes of the study, individual cats won’t be identified and there is no punishment if they do happen to catch native wildlife.” At the end of the summer, the results will be collated and, says Dr Kikillus, could be used to design a larger and more comprehensive study of cat behaviour in the wider Wellington region.

While hot humid weather across the country has provided the perfect conditions for lush pasture cover this spring, farmers need to stay alert for an increased risk of facial eczema through summer. Dairy and beef cattle, sheep, deer and goats are all susceptible to facial eczema which can damage the liver and cause inflammation of the bile ducts and an accumulation of certain compounds resulting in sensitivity to sunlight. Ballance Agri-Nutrients Animal Nutrition Product Manager, Jackie Aveling, says even before physical signs appear exposure to facial eczema can have a significant impact on animals particularly cows where it can result in an immediate drop in milk production. “Prevention is the best form of defence. For dairy farmers facial eczema can put a real brake on production when they are aiming to make the most of reasonable growing conditions when peak production is tapering off,” says Mrs Aveling. “It’s possible that farmers will not be aware of the full extent of a facial eczema problem until it’s too late. “If as little as three per cent of the herd show clinical signs of facial eczema, then subclinical cases can affect up to 70 per cent of the herd. “This can eat into dairy profits with a drop in production in affected animals by up to 50 per cent, and with a record payout following last season’s drought farmers want to ensure every cent hits the bank.” Sub-clinical facial eczema is the result of exposure to the toxin sporidesmin, which grows in pasture. Spore counts increase where grass temperatures are above 12 degrees for three consecutive nights and can vary from farm to farm and even between paddocks.

Having a ball! The theme was glamour, and it certainly lived up to its name as 160 Year 8 students from Waipipi, Pukeoware, View Road, Waiuku, Otaua, Glenbrook, Aka Aka and Awhitu schools turned out in full regalia. Co-organised by Michelle Brown (Waipipi) and Eamonn Kelly (Pukeoware), the ball featured a mix of traditional and modern music and featured the annual highlight of students (and parents!) trying to outdo each other in the modes of transport the youngsters arrived in. Michelle Brown said special thanks were due to Waiuku College students Finn Stainton, Olaf Wrieden, Josh Banning-Taylor, as well as music teacher Adam Warner for helping set set up lights and sound in their holiday break, as well as to Constable Andy Napier for his traffic control expertise.

Liam Cassidy, Seth Anderson and James Nicol made the most of arriving in a convertible Mustang

Ashlee Coulam arrived in style in a monster tractor

Traffic duty for Constable Napier

Sharing a laugh were Sian-May Evans and Natasha Salter

Ronin Carswell and Niko Manning with their ’Dad’s sister’s friend’s’ 351GT Hemi Brooke Hodgkinson and Tayla Robinson of Waiuku Primary School

Otaua School sent a fine contingent of youngsters to the ball Holly Newson, Phoebe Simpson and Danika Ryland-Higgins smile for the official photographer Chief Fire Officer Colin Riddle and grand-daughter Taylah Millen Kane Kitcher, Lawrence Miles and Christina Middleton arrived in a classic. Te Aroha Kaihau, Amy Crawford and Sasha Kyd arrived by limousine.

Relaxed with their ride were Devin Gregory and Jayden Watts,

James Hedley, Britney Cunningham-Lee and Jack Palmer, all from Waiuku Primary.

COUNTIES MANUKAU

Life Education has thrived and grown in New Zealand for the last twenty five years and we will continue with our mission for the next twenty five years and beyond. Life Education is recognised for its abilities and achievements in many areas. Our mascot Harold is one of the most recognised ‘faces’ in New Zealand. We are immensely proud of our achievements and strive for continual improvement. We believe in the power of knowledge to enable our children to make better, more informed decisions. We are in the uniquely well placed position of delivering our messages to New Zealand youth in our multi-sensory mobile classrooms within the school environment Our purpose is to help give the young people of New Zealand, through positive health based education, the knowledge and skills to raise their awareness and to live a fulfilling and healthy life.
