Lock gates planned for the Needles

Weekly crossword with the compliments of

Some things never change.... Exactly 100 years ago this week, nine members of the Harbour Board spent two days in Waiuku, examining the estuary and meeting with local residents to discuss harbour facilities. A century later, and there is still talk of dredging, and lock gates at the Needles. It would have been interesting to see how the town would have developed, if the proposals put forward in 1913 had come to fruition. As the article stated; Mr Gunson (Harbour Board chairman), said he fully realised the responsibility of taking over control of the harbour, and the interests of Waiuku claimed first consideration, but the Board was not prepared to move in the matter unless the people interested were also prepared to help themselves. If anything was done to improve the water approach, it should be done properly. A survey showed that

For the bride and groom, it’s meant to be the happiest day of their life – but for lots of Kiwis, a wedding ends up being a place where they get injured. With the arrival of spring, the wedding ‘season’ is now cranking into gear. And going on past years’ ACC claims, this means there’ll be plenty of people marching off to A and E after witnessing the wedding march in the months ahead! There were at least 600 claims for injuries between 2010 and 2012 that were clearly wedding-related. One cause of injury stands out among all others – the dance floor! Whether it’s teetering over in high heels, pulling muscles while busting out a fancy move, slipping on a wet floor or having your dainty toes stood on by

Several injuries were sustained while jumping to catch the bouquet – so while being the successful fielder may indicate you’re next to get hooked, that insight may come at a price! Lots of injuries happened setting up the wedding – there were back strains from moving

Weddings are meant to be festive occasions, but don’t hug people too tight – doing so led to a handful of injuries. Food plays a big part in any wedding, but preparing it led to cut fingers, and people also chipped teeth on foreign objects in the cake or other wedding fare. And finally, rings generally play a starring role at weddings, so guard against swallowing them or other jewellery – yes, this can happen!

to secure a channel in the creek with 10ft of water, 50ft wide at low tide, it would mean dredging from the wharf to the Needles at a cost of 57,000 pounds. This would give 800 acres of water and 13 miles of foreshore. This project had been abandoned, however, as neither good nor cheap. The second proposal was a lock at the Needles. Plans were submitted, and a lock 150ft by 24ft would give 10ft of water at Waiuku at low tide. This would cost 50,000 pounds. The Harbour Board was prepared to finance the scheme if the people would find money for the interest. Other members of the Board also addressed the meeting, pointing out the advantages of the scheme and urging the residents to seriously consider the proposal. Dr Howden said the scheme was a very good one for the district, and there should be no question about its being carried out.

Motor Caravanners launch their Spring Clean Members of the Counties Motor Caravan Association rolled up their sleeves to clean up the Kaiaua area on September 1 as part of a nationwide spring clean. The group are all members of the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association (NZMCA) and joined a large number of fellow motorhomers from around the country in simi-

lar community-based projects. The Spring Clean is a practical way for members to not only give back to our community but also to reinforce their commitment to the environment. “As an organisation we are proud of our beautiful country and we recognise our responsibility to play a part in keeping it that

way,” a spokesperson said. “The local Area members chose the Kaiaua area for the Spring Clean because they felt they were giving back to this particular community. “We filled a truck with full black bags plus a utility as well. Some of the unique things found were car keys, a damaged air bag with all its attachments, tyres, lots of steel etc.” The Kaiaua Spring Clean is also a way for local NZMCA members to celebrate the organisation’s 50,000th membership. “We are a city on wheels so we are keen to harness the power of NZMCA members in all 25 areas across New Zealand to make a difference to our country. “Looking to the future, while the Spring Clean project is timed for just one month, the big picture is for NZMCA members to take this project to their hearts. “Counties NZMCA has a large boundary and we are hoping to repeat this in other part of our area. “We can see the day when members whip on their NZMCA Spring Clean reflective vests and do a tidy-up wherever they see it’s needed – i.e. as some members do this already, picking up rubbish they might see in a rest area where they have stopped for a cuppa.”

Local war years told on DVD While many Franklin residents were serving overseas during WWII, there was plenty of activity on the home front, with black outs, wardens, coastal protection and the American marines. Waiuku Museum will be showing the DVD ‘Eternal Vigilance’, by Jay Pressnell and Martin Bennett, on Sunday September 22, beginning at 1.30pm. The 35-minute DVD, which illustrates the stories, places and people of Franklin and how the war years affected them, will run continuously through the afternoon. A number of local people share their memories, and scenes include places of significance during those years. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be served and there will be the opportunity to view items in the new military display case, including the uniform of Major Daniel Lusk who formed the Forest Rifle rangers in 1863. Entry is by donation.

50 artists combine for Strathallan art auction Funds raised will go towards outdoor pursuits centre

There is quite a buzz around this year’s bi-annual ACG Strathallan Art Auction. Not only are there a number of artists and their pieces lined up, but this year’s money raised is going towards a community outdoor pursuits centre, based at ACG Strathallan. Feature artist is Chloe King, who is an illustrative painter from Hawke’s Bay and is also the grandmother of two ACG Strathallan students. Chloe says, “I am thrilled to have been chosen as the Feature Artist this year at the Strathallan Art Exhibition, and hope you enjoy viewing my work as much as I do creating it.” After many years as a studio potter, Chloe turned to painting only four years ago. In that time she has raked up awards and accolades. Her work is accessible, celebrating life through everyday activities. She says, “I hope to bring a smile to the lips of everyone that spends time in front of one of my pictures.” There will be over 50 artists represented, with a range of work from painting, to installations through to leather, steel and aluminum work. Artists are featured from all over the country as far as Queenstown, Tauranga and Warkworth. There are many locals represented as well. Several of the senior ACG Strathallan fine arts and design students will also have their work for sale. Organiser Alison Baxter says, “These are very much our up and coming artists of this generation. ACG Strathallan students are known for topping Cambridge International Examinations on a local and international level in the various streams of art.” Robin Kirkham, Principal, ACG Strathallan says, “This is a wonderful event for the community to get behind and this time we

The estuary on our school grounds will become the home of the centre and we will offer courses for our students and those in the surrounding areas.” Being billed as one of the calendar events of the month, the Art Auction will be held at ACG Strathallan on Saturday, September 21, from 7:30pm.

Pollok artists make splash at Franklin festival

The Pollok Arts and Crafts Co-operative, based on the Awhitu peninsula, has had an impressive input into the recently opened Franklin Arts Festival. Two of their members have been involved with the organization of the event this year. Committee members Deborah Illingworth and Lois Templeton have been helping out with the painting and ceramics/textiles respectively, along with long time friend of the Co-op, Stephenie Collin. Other Co-op members pitched in on the Wednesday before opening night, helping to mount the almost 700 artworks, both in the Town Hall and the NZ Steel gallery. This was a marathon effort and credit must go to both Deborah and Lois for the imaginative and appealing way the works were displayed. Both members were responsible also for helping

with the labour intensive job of acquiring sponsorship for the prizes. The Co-op itself contributed by sponsoring a prize in the pottery section. Co-op members were also well represented in the exhibition itself. Lois had three entries in the pottery and textiles sections, Kerry Collins two entries in the textile section, Phil Jordan two entries in the mixed media section. Irmi Hastings, another Co-op member, won a third prize for her tea cosies in the textile section, and Deborah Illingworth, who entered a total of four works, won the Oil and Acrylics section with her painting, ‘Blind Faith’. She was in the amusing position of having to present herself the award on opening night. Co-op member, Phil Jordan commented that it was a great opportunity for them to mix with artists from other centres, and to appreciate

Despite freezing conditions, blue lips and numb fingers, the Waiuku College clay target shooting squads fine tuned their preparation for the North Island Championships and the Nationals with top results in Tauranga last week. The girls team of Nicole Saunderson and Zoe Groot maintained their superb recent form, winning their section some 14 points ahead of nearest rivals Hauraki Plains College. For the squad it was the first time at the new grounds, and malfunctioning traps along with the inclement weather played havoc for some of the shooters, but Waiuku still showed out with fine results. First-year shooter Ellen Ballintine, who will be joining Nicole and Zoe in a threeperson squad for the Nationals, showed she is well in the mix, shooting 55 from 60 in the points score section, and proving that her dedication to additional trainings and competing in Sunday shoots is paying off. The boys team of Campbell Jolly, Matty Collins, Nelson Akast, Soren Enoka and Dean Sands battled in the conditions, finishing fourth and just missing out on the prizes. Kloeten ready for council challenge He may be only 26, butFranklin Ward candidate Niko Kloeten is confident he’s ready to step up to the challenge of being an Auckland Councillor. Age has never been a barrier for the Pukekohe native, who was once the second-youngest journalist ever hired by the prestigious National Business Review. “I’ve been interviewing CEOs and Cabinet Ministers since I was 21 years old, so the thought of sitting at the council table

doesn’t faze me in the slightest. Just the other week I interviewed the Lord Mayor of Brisbane, Graham Quirk. “I never expected to end up at the NBR, just like I never thought I’d be running for councillor, but in each case I saw an opportunity and grabbed it with both hands.” Kloeten has caught the attention of Franklin voters by waving his sign at motorists in the freezing rain, showing up at the Pukekohe train station at 5.30am to hand out flyers and even putting up advertising on the famous

VOTE

Waiuku horse Charlie White. But while doing the more traditional routine of pounding the pavement, he has been pleasantly surprised at the mood for change and the desire for young blood on the council. “I’ve had literally hundreds of people tell me the same thing: ‘It’s great to see a young guy standing for councillor.’ The feedback has been positive from people of all ages.” Kloeten decided to stand for councillor after moving back to Pukekohe earlier this year with his wife Veronica and daughter Alexis. The catalyst was his concern at the rising cost of housing in Franklin, which is causing hardship for young people and forcing many older parents to give their children costly financial help. “Having researched the housing issue extensively over the past few years, I am ready to be an advocate for affordability not just in Franklin but in all of Auckland. Unaffordable housing is a sign the Auckland Council isn’t doing its job properly.” Kloeten represents Affordable Auckland, which has a platform of lower rates, balanced budgets, spending on the basics, property rights and affordable housing. “Getting the council’s spending under control is crucial. It’s borrowing $1.2 billion this year and is already paying $1 million a day in interest. “This, combined with our severely unaffordable housing, makes it especially important that young people get out and vote for me at the local election.”

Grants funding sees annual Ageing Expo return to Pukekohe Next Friday, September 27, the Franklin Integration Project will again host the Franklin Positive Ageing Expo in the Pukekohe Indian Association Hall. Following the withdrawal of support by the Counties Manukau District Health Board, which had been appreciated for each of the past seven years, there was a real doubt that the 2013 Expo would go ahead. However a generous grant from the Franklin Local Board, plus funding from the Lion Foundation, has seen the popular Franklin event return. Chris Stabler, who has been involved with the Expo since inception, says Expo 2013 will be the eighth to have been staged by the Franklin Integration Project and the question has been posed “why is it so popular and working well”. “I am sure there are many reasons for this but for myself I think first and foremost it is because it is specifically for older people. Society today appears to be obsessed with youth and we live in an era where chronological age seems to dominate so much of daily life. So much is focussed on looking younger, cosmetic surgery, botox, liposuction, and 20 different brands of snake-oil designed to lubricate the joints “To have an event dedicated and the parts other to older people, celebrating snake-oils cannot reach. older age, acknowledging To have an event that older people have full, dedicated to older active, productive and people, and celfulfilling lives is refreshing ebrating older age, acknowledging that and attractive.” older people have full, active, productive and fulfilling lives is refreshing and attractive. On a more mundane level, in a world of “user pays” an event which is totally free is also quite refreshing and attractive!” Chris says the show offers NZ’s largest collection of services, groups, clubs, and organisations, dedicated to older people and brought together under one roof, with no charge for admission. The Expo can provide information and advice on a host of services and therapies. People with time to take on new hobbies, pastimes, or games will find a wide range to choose from and enthusiasts waiting to sign them up. It is also a very entertaining day, with a stage show demonstrating a variety of dance and exercise, designed to promote good balance and muscle strength and to provide healthy social encounters. “As well as free entry, there will be free refreshments available throughout the day courtesy of those wonderful RSA ladies. There will even be free draws for prizes and surprise gifts. We will make available free transport for those unable to get to the Expo by other means and this will be provided by Driving Miss Daisy. If you live in Franklin and have no other means of transport, call them on 2391377 to discuss how they may be able to help you,” Chris says. “So, if you are an older person, know an older person, think that you might one day be an older person, or just wonder what older persons get up to, then put Friday, September 27 aside. The Expo is at the Pukekohe Indian Association Community Hall, and doors open at 9.30am.

Shield draws crowds What is likely to have become the most-photographed trophy in the history of the district attracted more throngs of local families and youngsters on Thursday. The Ranfurly Shield arrived in Waiuku in the afternoon, and rugby fans of all ages took the chance to take a snap with the ‘Log of Wood’ as it is known, before it was taken to the Waiuku Rugby Club and then back to Eco-Light Stadium where Counties were preparing for their Shield defence for Sunday.

Playing with Colours The Counties Country Quilters Biennial Exhibition For those that got a taste of the excellence in textiles on show in the New Zealand Steel Gallery during the 2013 Franklin Arts Festival, you are in for another treat this time from the Counties Country Quilters. The Counties Country Quilters are a friendly group of 60 ladies who range from novices to experts. The club offers various activities throughout the year for members, including mini workshops, annual retreats, and the biennial exhibition. One of their notable activities is making quilts for premature babies at Kidz First Hospital. The quilters have the privilege of hosting visiting international tutors, who provide workshops while in the country. Meeting twice a month, the quilters welcome new members to join the group. Meetings are a great opportunity for those new to the craft, as well as

those who have been quilting for a while to practice new techniques and expand their creative repertoire. Raffle quilts are made annually to benefit both charity and the club’s education fund. The exhibition this year includes a guest exhibition of Dorothy Collard’s “Word Art” as well as a raffle with a bed quilt as prize. Playing with Colours: The Counties Country Quilters Biennial Exhibition 2013 will be hosted at The New Zealand Steel Gallery, Franklin Arts Centre, 12 Massey Ave, Pukekohe, from September 20-28, 2013. Franklin Arts Centre is free admission and open 10am–4pm Mon–Sat. (Please note the arts centre will be closed on Sunday 22 September).

Unsure about your yachting? Ask an expert It’s not easy being an acknowledged expert on everything sporting, especially when it involves a sport I have tried for years to know almost nothing about. While the rest of New Zealand (and the world if you believe the press releases), are avidly following the legal dramas that are the America’s Cup, occasionally racing breaks out and one is forced to watch. Unfortunately, yachting, for me, falls into the class of activities that involve water, which means I am hopeless at it. My Dad taught me to swim when I was five years old, by the simple expedient of throwing me into a river. It was incredibly difficult and traumatic, but once I got out of the sack it was a bit easier. Swimming sports at school were a nightmare as I perched, shivering on the edge of the pool, watching nervously for passing hawks eyeing up my pasty-white and skelton-like frame. Diving was even more of a terror, combining both my dislike of swimming and my fear of heights into one fusion of paranoia. The problem I have encountered throughout my life is that we are an island nation. You can’t go anywhere in a single direction without quickly ending up in a harbour of some description. I tried fishing for a while, but could never see the point in attaching a fish I would be happy catching to a hook, then hurling it into the sea, never to be seen again. Sometimes you would see where the fish went because a seagull would catch it in mid-air, sometimes it would drop off the hook and land behind me, and often it would strike me behind my right ear 1.5 seconds after I had executed what I thought was a per-

Words’n stuff By Post Editor Nigel Ward fect casting manoeuvre. Long-line fishing was abandoned after I became gradually more entangled in the thousands of hooks which were whistling past me from the sand, eventually having the option of either cutting the entire rig away, or becoming a form of bait for the (no doubt) gigantic sharks that awaited me. My cousin still talks to this day of the night I went spear-fishing with him for flounder, and I still bear the scar of what I thought was a tasty dinner, and which turned out, through the murky water, to be my left foot. So naturally, when my family decided we should take up yachting some years ago, I searched desperately for almost any other activity. Instead, I ended up on a boat the size of a bathtub, with a sail that looked like it was manufactured from one of the curves of the Sydney Opera House, and approximately 25km of ropes that connected the two things together. Turns out nothing is simple on a boat. For a start, the craft was known as an Optimist, which would have to be the most ironic name ever for a piece of plywood on which you are expected to be blown by the wind over a deep, dark and highly dangerous sea. I looked in vain for any boats named Pessimist, Futility or even Imminent Demise, but nope, they have lovely, inspiring titles to sucker you in. After being told that the ropes were,

in fact, not called ropes at all, but sheets, I was then informed that the left side of the boat is called port. This is also the name of the thing you sail from, and also what you need to drink beforehand, so clearly yachties don’t have much of an imagination when it comes to naming things. I would have called the other side anti-port, but nope, that’s starboard. The pointy bit at the front has about fifteen names, as does the square bit at the back, and there are more than a million different kinds of sails. The only word on the boat that made sense was the boom, because that’s the noise you hear in your head when it swings around and clouts you. But, seeing as how we are all suffering from Cup Fever, I thought I would help you to sound intelligent when conversing over tea and crumpets with the nautical brigade. Here are some terms and their explanation: Luffing: The noise you make when the other boat sinks; “He sank, and I couldn’t stop luffing.” Foiling: What an Irish woman does with her nails; “Oy was foiling moy nayls just the other evening.” Foil: What she uses for foiling. Gybe: What they put on their walls in Herne Bay; “Oh dahling, one simply can’t wait for the gybestopper to finish the gybe you know.” Capsize: What they ask when you go to buy your captain’s hat. Genoa: Term used when asking about female sailors; “Crikey, she’s pretty, genoa?” Armed with this knowledge, you will now be fully prepared for tomorrow, when our heroes bring home the Cup.

Karaka-Weymouth bridge plan scrapped Local mouth-painting artist on show Manurewa Civic Leaders are delighted that Auckland Council has decided to scrap proposed plans to build a $200 million dollar bridge between Weymouth and Karaka as part of the Unitary Plan. Manurewa-Papakura Councillors Sir John Walker and Calum Penrose are pleased that council colleagues voted for the Southern Rural-Urban Boundary to extend to the South. “This bridge would only have been needed if the Rural-Urban Boundary had been allowed to extend westwards towards Karaka.” Says Councillor Calum Penrose. “Councillors instead voted to extend the RUB eastwards and southwards along major transport corridors averting the need for the proposed bridge and saving the

residents of Weymouth and Karaka the heartbreak of having their pristine locations destroyed by a major highway being built through the heart of their communities.” Says Calum Penrose Manurewa Local Board Chair Angela Dalton says the bridge has only been stopped because of the advocacy from Councillors Penrose and Walker, reflecting the position of the Manurewa Local Board as well as Weymouth and Karaka residents. “The residents of Weymouth and Karaka should never have been put through the uncertainty that this draft Unitary Plan put them through.” Says Ms Dalton. “Right from the start it was clear the bridge should never have even been proposed.

It isn’t affordable and it required extensive expansion of the RUB westwards away from major transport routes such as the railway and motorway. “This isn’t the vision of the Unitary Plan.” Says Ms Dalton. Manurewa Local Board Member and Transport Lead George Hawkins says that this is an important victory for the Manurewa-Papakura ward councillors, which will benefits the residents of Weymouth who have also fought hard to stop this bridge. “The Manurewa Action Team is committed to doing all we can to support the residents of Manurewa. We have supported Weymouth throughout this process and we are pleased with this result,” says Mr Hawkins.

Franklin mouth painting artist Grant Sharman has been chosen to show his artwork at the upcoming Mouth and Foot Painting Artists (MFPA) exhibition in Fremantle, Australia, where over 140 artworks from 28 countries will be on display. Grant will be exhibiting three of his artworks (“Piha”, “Miniature Roses”, and “Colours of my Home”) at the Fremantle Town Hall and says it’s an honour to be representing the New Zealand MFPA talent at an international event. Grant began painting after an injury in a school rugby match at 15 left him a tetraplegic in 1977, becoming a

full member of the MFPA in 1988. He especially loves painting flowers and the scenery from his home district. Visitors to the exhibition will be able to try mouth painting for themselves, and Grant thinks they’ll be surprised at how difficult it is. “I’ve been mouth painting for a while now but am still learning new techniques. I think guests will be impressed with the high standards of art at the exhibition. You’d never know by looking at the works that the artists have little or no movement in their hands,” said Grant. The MFPA was established in Australia in 1971 and

currently has 16 members around the country. To become a student member an artist must qualify by painting using a brush held in either their mouth or foot, having lost the use of their hands through an illness or accident. Student members receive scholarships for art supplies and tuition. Once an artist becomes a full member or associate they are guaranteed a salary for life, even if they are unable to continue painting. For further information on the Mouth and Foot Painting Artists contact MFPA on (09) 827 6746 or visit www.mfpa. co.nz

Franklin’s running out of time for digital Time is fast running out for people in the Franklin district who are still to go digital. “I’m recommending people take action now to go digital and to check in with family members that they have gone digital. When the South Island went digital in April there were people who waited until the last minute

Half million dollars for zero waste Groups seeking aid for projects that help reduce waste to landfill can apply to Auckland Council’s ‘Zero Waste’ fund, opening on October 1. The Waste Minimisation and Innovation Fund (WMIF) offers assistance for new projects requiring seed funding, and support for existing waste minimisation projects. It can help fund project development via feasibility studies, surveys and pilot programmes, or help with a range of costs including workshops, equipment and plant. Councillor Noelene Raffills, who led the hearings on the Waste Management and Minimisation Plan that established WMIF, says the first funding round in April brought forth an exciting range of new possibilities for reducing Auckland’s waste. “This fund provides an opportunity to have an impact on waste in the Auckland region, to help us reach our aspiration of ‘Zero

Waste’,” Councillor Raffills said. The key areas of focus for the fund include resource recovery, commercial waste, organic waste and behaviour change. Businesses, community-based groups, iwi/Maori groups and educational organisations are eligible for assistance from the Waste Minimisation and Innovation Fund. Funding rounds in October and April disburse the annual fund of $500,000. This round is for three categories of grants – small ($250 to $5,000), medium ($5,001 to $25,000) and large (grants over $25,000). Recipients need to meet at least half the cost of project funding. For further information visit www.auckland.council.govt.nz/funding and search ‘Environmental and Heritage, call 09 3010101 or email aucklandwastefund@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz The October funding round closes at 4pm on October 31.

Top award for Cossie netballers The Waiuku Cosmopolitan Club Netball Team, for the second time, has won the Sportsmanship Award at the annual Kurangaituku Netball Tournament in Rotorua. The club last won the award in 2010, and this year scooped the pool again from over 200 teams at the popular tournament held at the turn of the month. The team, delighted as they were by their win, laughed that they didn’t want to give away their actual game results, but said they had a great time.

Solving bloat in hand-reared lambs Each year we are presented with cases of hand reared lambs suffering from acute and often fatal bloat. Because such lambs are very often a child’s pet being raised for school pet day the death of such lambs is often a very devastating event for all concerned. Bloat, in lambs occur when an excessive amount of gas is produced by certain bacteria within lambs digestive system. These bacteria can be normal inhabitants of a lambs

digestive system when the lamb is fed certain foods such as cow’s milk or milk replace these bacteria can rapidly multiply in number and produce a lot of gas causing the lamb to become bloated and , in severe cases, die. Such Bloat in hand reared lambs can be prevented by adding acidophilus yoghurt to the lamb’s milk as acidophilus yoghurt contains ‘good’ bacteria that prevent the ‘bacteria gas producing bacteria multiplying rapidly within the lamb’s

digestive system. To be successful in preventing bloat the yogurt must be added to the lamb’s milk well in advance (12- 14 hours) of the lamb being fed. The yogurt / milk mix must also be warmed to allow the mix to ferment correctly and set. The recipe and instructions upon how to feed this yogurt / milk mix to hand reared lambs is available free of charge from Pukekohe / Waiuku Veterinary Centre. -By John Swney

Council takes over Pukekohe pound Waikato District Council has taken on the management of Pukekohe Dog Pound after the former contractor of the Auckland Council-owned facility ended its contract earlier this year. The facility, which reopened last week, is located at 15 Austen Place, Pukekohe and is open for business Monday to Friday from 1pm – 4pm and from 9am - 11am on Saturday and Sunday. In addition to operating the pound, the Council has extended its Animal Control presence in the north of the district with two new Animal

Control Officers now based at the Council’s Tuakau office. The pound is home to dogs that are picked up wandering or are seized from properties for aggressive behaviour or attacking. If the dog is not collected by its owner within seven days it will be assessed for its suitability to be re-homed. For more information or to contact the Pukekohe Dog Pound, call 09 238 4934. The Council also owns and operates a pound in Brownlee Avenue, Ngaruawahia, which is open Monday to Friday, 2.30pm – 3.30pm.

Auckland Council candidate Rob Thomas says he welcomes the discussion to allow for dog friendly public transport on Auckland’s train and bus services. Mr Thomas says, “Many international cities have small dog-friendly transport policies. If it’s small enough to fit on your lap it’s small enough to go on public transport.” The current Auckland Transport rules allow only guide dogs and guide dogs in training on buses if under supervision of their caregiver. Other pets are not allowed.

Waiheke Island ferries and buses are the only exception to Auckland Transport’s “no pets” policy. At last count Au c k l a n d Council said there are 85,818 dogs registered and known dogs of 102,832 across the city. “There are thousands of dog owners across Auckland that are limited by their transport options and are forced into

For years Aucklanders have taken dogs on Waiheke Island passenger transport and now is the time to look at extending the dog-friendly network across Auckland.” Mr Thomas says that he has been door knocking residents across the inner-city that are frustrated with the lack of options which is costing them

hundreds of dollars a year in parking and fuel while empty trains rattle past their homes. “To make this work, there will need to be rules in place to ensure dogs are wellbehaved, leashed and that people clean up any mess. Whether or not a dog can ride on a bus or train should ultimately be up to the discretion of the driver,” Mr Thomas said.

Steelers crush Taranaki in first defence In their first ever Ranfurly Shield defence, a large crowd of over 12,000 packed out ECOLight Stadium to witness the Counties Manukau Steelers dominate over challengers Taranaki. The encounter between the two premiership teams saw the Steelers claim an entertaining 44-7 victory in Pukekohe to retain the shield and notch up a bonus point win. The holders had an ideal start after an error by Taranaki gave the Steelers field position and ended with hooker Hika Elliot busting over for the opening try. It wasn’t long before Counties were in again after a brilliant interchange of passing

between centre Rey Lee Lo and Ma’ama Vaipulu who gave the final pass to promising lock Jimmy Tupou to dive in for the Steelers second try in the opening 10 minutes. The visitors simply couldn’t get into the match as the Steelers continued to disrupt the Taranaki attack and win turnovers at the breakdown. First five Baden Kerr continued to extend the Steelers advantage with a penalty but again on the back of a solid run by Elliot, the electric Vaipulu powered forward and then some quick thinking by wing Frank Halai picked up and lunge in at the corner. The visitors enjoyed a period of attack refusing to take the

shots at goal when they were on offer as the Steelers defence showed they were up to the task. Kerr’s second penalty gave the home side a commanding 25-0 lead but were fortunate not to concede a try right on halftime when it looked as though Taranaki number 8 Blade Thomson had crossed. The Steelers started the second half in similar fashion to the first winning a turnover immediately from the kickoff and within minutes Halai powered over for his second try. Taranaki battled hard to get into the contest and replied with a try to prop Carl Carmichael but that would be all they could muster.

Both teams looked to lose their rhythm and continuity during the middle stages of the half while the Steelers were still threatening at the breakdown. Counties replacement halfback Kane Hancy managed to duck in for a try in the final stages but from the ensuing kickoff a vintage Steelers counter attack saw Lee Lo start and finish the movement with a superb try to seal a spectacular performance. The victory sees the Steelers move up the standings as they now prepare for another Ranfurly Shield challenge at home by neighbours Waikato next Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 2.35pm at ECOLight Stadium.

Can they keep it going? Steelers at home v Waikato this Saturday. Kickoff 2.35pm at ECOLight Stadium.

Umaga gets suspended ban Counties Manukau Steelers Head Coach Tana Umaga was issued with a suspended two-match ban following his misconduct hearing last week. The misconduct related to insulting comments directed at match officials following the Steelers match against Auckland on 4 September 2013. Umaga said at the time: “I value my role as a coach and a leader and have learned from this situation. It is important that I learn quickly from my mistakes to improve and develop as a coach.” “I am pleased the hearing is over so I can to turn my attentions to keeping the Ranfurly Shield on Sunday.” And turn his attention to it he did, coaching his side to a stunning 44-7 victory over Taranaki to keep the Log of Wood in town for at least another week.

You can’t take it with you... We all know “you can’t take it with you” but what do you do with all those assets you’ve accumulated throughout your life: the house, the car, the business, the savings? And how do you protect those you love? Wills Month is aimed at reminding us all of the importance of making sure we have up to date Wills so that our nearest and dearest aren’t faced with the need to make decisions about your assets once you’ve gone, or decisions about how our children and dependents are to be looked after. At the worst, dying without a Will leaves your family facing lengthy court action to deal with your assets. The Law will decide for you if you don’t, and how many of us want that? Avoiding that situation is so easy: take the time this month to visit us and make an up to date Will. Decide before you go what you want to have happen with your assets, and who you want to appoint as your executor to protect your interests and your loved ones. You can specify in your Will exactly where you want your assets, including future assets, to go. You can even provide for children you don’t yet have. We can help you with the wording that will ensure your future dependents and assets are protected. If you do have a Will this month is a good time to look at it and ensure it still covers your wishes. You may have married since you last made a Will. If that’s the case, your old Will is invalid, since marriage invalidates existing Wills, unless that Will was explicitly made in contemplation of your marriage. Your Will doesn’t just divide your assets and specify who is to have them. It can also set our how your assets are to be used in your family’s interest after you are gone. It’s important to choose as executors people who know and will respect your values and interests. For that reason, it is best to discuss your wishes with your executors and make sure they are willing to serve. It can be a time consuming job to be an executor. Some of the tasks executors are asked to undertake include ensuring your children get the education you want for them, or investing funds for their later inheritance. You should consider appointing a testamentary guardian for minor children in case something happens to your spouse. Your children are the most important and precious things you leave behind. Your Will can also set out your wishes for your funeral. Updating Wills is important. If your circumstances and relationships change you should review your Will and ensure it does still provide for those important to you in the manner you want. Every adult should have an up-to-date Will. Your Will is one of the most valuable legal documents you’ll create. It is a powerful tool for protecting your loved ones and giving you and them peace of mind. There are certain legal requirements which your Will must meet. For that reason, we urge that you have a lawyer draw up your Will. Self-written Wills can create more problems than they solve, since you may not have foreseen a change in circumstances or may not express your wishes in a way that the Courts will uphold. One of the most common reasons people don’t get a Will is that they are busy with day to day life and don’t make it a priority to plan for the future. Make Wills Month the month you secure the future for your nearest and dearest. This article is general information only, for information specific to your requirements contact Arnet Law for an appointment on 09 23 88 136, email info@arnetlaw.co.nz or visit www.arnetlaw.co.nz.
