Fuchsia Show a blooming success

The Franklin Fuchsia Club hosted its annual show and sale at the Waiuku Civic Centre on Friday and Saturday of last week, with a bumper turnout of visitors and exhibitors. The first morning of the show saw around 200 visitors arrive to examine the prize-winning plants, and to purchase some of the hundreds of fuchsias on offer. A mini-bus from Tauranga and visitors from as far afield as Whangarei, Helensville, and Hamilton (as well as one couple who were visiting from France and brought an international flavour!), ensured the centre was busy throughout the two days. Along with the stalls and displays of fuchsia memorabilia, there was also a hotly-contested competition, and the main prize of ‘Best in Show’ was awarded to Gloria Underwood of Dargaville, who travels every month to join the members of the Franklin club. Vehicle access changes for forest users A meeting held at the Waiuku Yacht Club prior to Christmas has announced new proposals for vehicle access to the Waiuku Forestry to work around proposed harvest areas which will become operational areas for mining by New Zealand Steel. The map below details the shows the proposed access roads, while the areas in green are proposed harvest areas. The roads marked in red indicate the two points at which the public will be able to access the forest with vehicles. Crown Forestry says the existing entrance will remain open utilising the parking area around the old fire store; this will give recreation access to the northern part of the forest. A new public entrance will be opened adjacent to the mine site entrance; this will give access to the river car park, the beach car park and the lookout. The intention is that there will be walking/riding access between the northern and southern ends of the forest. A resource consent has been granted for the small harvest

area and harvesting will commence early in the new year it is anticipated that this operation will only take three to four weeks. During this operation logging traffic and trucks will be using the existing access roads, so forest users are asked to drive on the correct side of the road and be prepared to stop. The forestry will be undertaken by Crown Forestry. Upgrading of the new public access around the southern end of the forest will also take place in the new year. Until this road has been upgraded all access will be through the existing entrance off Wilsons Road. Crown Forestry says a resource consent has been lodged with Environment Waikato for the larger area marked in green on the map. Once this has been obtained, Crown Forestry will close public access via Perham Road but parking will still be available around the old fire store building, giving recreation access to the northern part of the forest. Warwick Foran, General Manager, Crown Forestry says Waiuku falls within one of the Wai-

kato Regional Plan’s High Risk Erosion Areas which (historically) has required Crown Forestry to obtain a resource consent where soil disturbance thresholds are exceeded. “However, in a very recent (just prior to Christmas) decision from the High Court, we have been advised that clearing vegetation ahead of mining does not require

a resource consent (for Waiuku),” he said last week. 13km south of Waiuku, at the mouth of the Waikato River, the forest is owned by Crown Forestry and managed by New Zealand Forest Managers. The forest covers 1508 ha and is planted in Pinus Radiata. Also at the forest is the New Zealand Steel Iron Sand Mining operation.

One of the most-heard comments from young people in our region is that there is nothing to do in the local area. That comment struck me this week, as our sales staff were putting together our biannual ‘Join a Club’ feature which will be in next week’s issue. I am always amazed at just how much this district has to offer in terms of clubs, groups, social and cultural organisations, and a plethora of sporting clubs for just about every age and ability. As a region, we must surely have one of the highest rates of participation in community events and ventures, and our ability to fund raise for worthy causes is something which is often mentioned by local politicians and community leaders. At the Post, we do our best to provide as much coverage as possible to local groups, and, naturally, we are continually asked to sponsor events and organisations. Over the Christmas period, we put a great deal of thought into how best we could manage these requests, and also support our local groups. To this end, we have announced an annual sponsorship pool of $25,000 of a combination of sponsored and subsidised advertising for locally-based not-for-profit groups. We are asking for groups to contact us and tell us about their organisation, their projects, and their events through 2014 and the start of 2015. We have already received a number of expressions of interest, and we will be sending out information packs to those who have contacted us in early February. For further information, se page 13 this week, and we look forward to continuing to support our community through the year, in a more formal and structured way.

Questions over how people with disabilities were expected to use the new Waiuku toilets with their steep ramp and opening-outwards doors have been resolved - they are in fact not open. The somewhat ambiguous sign which was affixed to the doors suggested that the concrete ramp which has been constructed in front of the toilets was to provide temporary access. However, the doors remained locked. Auckland Council said last week the toilets will, in fact, open in April, after further work on the intersection and the footpath. We are still at a loss to understand the temporary access, unless it is to enable people to get close enough to read the signs to tell them not to use the toilets…

After 21 years, Sylvia looking forward to new challenges After 21 years working with parents and children at the Waiuku Childcare Centre, Sylvia Galbraith is to retire at the end of February from her position as centre manager. Initially, she began at the organisation as a reliever, and after a year or two, she decided to embark on the

four-year course to become a qualified teacher. Over time, she worked her way up through the organisation, becoming head teacher, and then about five years ago, becoming the centre manager. The centre has been through a number of chang-

es over the past two decades, much of it surrounding the new compliance requirements, and through a far closer working relationship with the Ministry of Education. The centre is different to many child care centres as it is totally community run, with all ‘profits’ being returned to the centre to further develop the facility. Currently, the centre is almost at peak capacity, with around 33 children, and with all permanent staff now fully qualified. “It’s a special centre,” Sylvia says, noting that in her time with the organisation, she has seen youngsters who were pupils grow up to become mothers themselves. She laughs that when she joined the local Waiuku Theatre Group she met one teenager who recalled having her as her teacher years before at the centre - “I couldn’t have changed much, I guess!.” Besides the changes in structure with governmental agencies, the centre has seen a number of physical changes as well, with the building extended to incorporate what was previously a verandah area, and a revamped outdoor play area installed. Relicencing of the centre has recently been completed, and the centre is more and more developing its

role as a pre-school, rather than as a ‘babysitting service’. Among the changes has been the new requirement from the Ministry to ensure every child now has a personal tracking number to enable the Ministry to follow the child through his or her future education programs, and also a growing need for computer equipment, even for the youngsters.

The internet has been a great tool to assist inquiring minds to find further information about the topics that interest them, and also, of course, for record keeping, something which Sylvia smiles was always done in a ledger when she first started. As to why she has chosen now to retire, Sylvia says simply that she felt it was time for a change, and she is probably going to end up

involved in some other form of community service, as she has a strong belief in being part of her township. The centre is currently advertising for a new centre manager, someone who Sylvia says will need to have a true community focus. “It’s not a 9 to 5 job, really,” she says, “it’s probably more of a lifestyle than a job,” but it’s one she has relished over the past 21 years.

Call for artists to apply Barnstorming display

Auckland Council is seeking a new artist in residence for 2014. Applications are now open for a residency which enables an artist to live and work on a regional park for two months. The artist selected will live in a beach side bach either at Ta w h a r a n u i Regional Park or at Scandrett Regional Park and will create a new body of work related to the park or to the residency experience. Residency coordinator Michelle Edge says living on a park 24/7 exposes artists to places that change; dramatically or subtly, from day to day depending on the time, tide and weather. “This opportunity is open to makers and creators,

whatever their art form. Previous residents have included a poet, composer, painter, sculptor, installation artist, photographer and film-maker,” she says. An artist’s fee, to assist the d e ve l o p m e n t of new work, is offered as well as free accommodation. In return for their park sojourn and ‘outdoor studio’ the artist shares their work with the public or park visitors during or after the residency. Glass sculptor announces local workshops

…with award-winning artist Susan K Louie

An internationally-known sculptor who has made Waiuku her home is launching a series of workshops in the techniques of glass casting from an idyllic spot near Karioitahi. Susan Louie has exhibited in New Zealand and Australia with private collections held in NZ, Australia and USA. A member of the NZ Society of Artists in Glass,and a former president of the society, she held her first solo exhibition at The Studio Gallery in Kingsland in 2005, an installation telling stories of her childhood memories of growing up as a young Chinese girl working in a market garden. Her work plays a significant role in New Zealand history. She shared studio space at Mad Dog Studio in Onehunga, Auckland from 2004-2009 with other glass artists, Dr Max Stewart, Diane Greenwood, Cathy Carter and later Bernard Lee, until she moved to Pukekohe and worked in her own studio; she is now living in Waiuku with a purpose-built studio. She has also exhibited widely in New Zealand, including selection for Sculpture on Shore for her domestic piece ‘Gathering Papayas in Auckland’, and Waitakaruru Glass Exhibition with her

installations of Summer Rain, and lotus flowers and lotus pods on stainless steel rods. In 2006, Susan was invited by Tairawhiti Museum (Gisborne), to hold a solo exhibition in 2008, which took her two years to execute all the works and working full time as an administration professional. At her 2008 solo, titled “Harvesting the Happy Heart”, Professor Jack Richards purchased her large “Bowl of Wealth” as a Taonga for Tairawhiti Museum. She was instrumental in bringing glass to the Franklin region during the Franklin Arts Festival in 2010 and has exhibited at the NZ Steel Gallery at Franklin: The Centre with other Asian Artist to celebrate the Chinese New Year in 2011. The same year, she exhibited in an exhibition titled “Pretty” where her works were inspired by her studio in Pukekohe (Paerata Landscapes). Susan has undertaken workshops with internationally renowned artists such as David Reekie (UK), Richard Whiteley (Australia), and Claudia Borella (Whanganui) as well as workshops at Art Station with Jo Nuttall, Margi Nut-

tall and with Dermot Kelly (fusing) work. In 2011, she moved to the Waiuku region and set up a studio in an old farm garage, which lends itself space in which to create. Susan is keen on teaching students who may like to foray into glass; a medium she is passionate about and asks students to bring their sense of adventure, good sense of humour and a willingness to learn. The workshops will be hands-on and run on a weekend from 10am till 4pm each day. The first cast glass workshop will be held on February 1 and 2, and the following one will be held on 23, 24 February, with separate one-day workshops on the basics of coldworking (grinding, polishing, achieving certain finishes), at a later date. Susan says students will learn the art of lost wax casting, mould-making process, kiln loading and firing and simple finishing techniques to lead crystal glass. The course is suitable for beginners with no glass experience. Classes are limited to three people, and the course fee of $280 includes materials. Free family events at Waiuku estuary

Tamakae Reserve, at Waiuku, hosts two free events in coming weeks, with a live concert on Saturday night followed by an outdoor screening of the movie Grease in February. Town Centre manager Sharlene Druyven says both events provide something for the whole family, with the concert starting from 3pm, and then a couple of weeks later the movie, which will feature live entertainment and an ‘Americana’ theme. Saturday afternoon sees the bands Sisters of Swing and Fever Swing, part of Auckland Council’s summer festival Music in Parks, which organisers say will have patrons tapping their toes and swinging to the beat. Trio Sisters of Swing, whose style pays tribute to the iconic Andrews Sisters, are supported by gypsy swing band, Fever Swing.

Auckland councillor Alf Filipaina says this is a great opportunity to enjoy a variety of music in some of Auckland’s fantastic parks. “Grab your picnic blanket, sunscreen, friends and family and check out the awesome local talent playing, for free, in your local park this summer. There is something for everyone to enjoy.” Sisters of Swing combine a blended vocal trio with a hot band and are decked out in uniforms ready for action! It features the songs of early jazz swing and boogie with vocals from the talented Trudy Lile, Marcia Middlemess and Kathryn Hopkins. Sisters of Swing are backed by some of NZ’s top musicians, with Pete McGregor on bass, Bruce King on drums and Eli Moore on keyboard. Fever Swing features Mike and Etienne, from Latvia and Belgium respectively, young men with huge mu-

sical talent. If you’ve ever heard of Django Reinhart and Stephane Grappelli or the Hot Club de France, you will understand the toe tapping, gypsy swing music they play. If not, enjoy great playing of 30s and 40s music with some modern tunes in the mix too. Movies in the Park in Waiuku features the movie Grease on Friday February 7, in a show which runs from 6.30pm-10.00pm. A live group of muscisians and entertainers will be performing all the favourite songs from Grease the movie, and some of the favourite popular songs from the 60s including hits from Ray Charles, Little Peggy March, The Beatles, Roy Orbison and more. There will be big hair, bright lipstick, costumes and dance moves to accompany the songs. The groups will perform two half-hour brackets separated by a 20 minute rock and roll dance show.

The rock and roll dancers are from the Auckland Rock n Roll club and will have a dance group showing off their moves and will include a little audience participation. Organisers invite everyone to dress up in their Grease memorabilia and really get into the swing and says it should be a great night. The movie is expected to start screening about 8.30pm, light dependant. There will be a Lions barbecue for sausage sizzles, coffee, drinks, ice-cream and popcorn available to purchase. The event is free but if anyone would like to donate a gold coin all proceeds will go to the town flags to beautify the town. Sunday February 23 has been set for Waiuku Rotary’s annual Sunset Coast Walk, with organisers offering a walk suitable for everyone with spectacular West Coast scenery. The Awhitu Peninsular, stretching from Waiuku to the Manukau Heads, is an area of outstanding scenic beauty with extensive views along the West Coast, Tasman Sea and back over the Manukau Harbour. This year there are four walks - 5km, 7km, 8km, or 11km. The walk takes visitors through rolling farmland to the more rugged contour along the West Coast. Ranging from pushchairpossible to more challenging hillsides, with sea and harbour views on all walks, and clifftop views on the three longer walks. Anyone keen to attend is asked follow

the road signs from Waiuku to the registration base at 207 Kohekohe-Kariaotahi Road. There will be a complementary cold drink and hot sausage waiting for walkers when they return. Organisers point out this is not a competitive walk but a chance for families to walk at their own pace and enjoy the surroundings. Walkers can bring a picnic lunch or purchase an extra sausage or two on the day. Walkers are asked to note that dogs are not permitted. Registration is available on the day - and last year over 600 walkers enjoyed the event so with some small changes to the route the Waiuku Rotary Club is optimistic of another top day. Waikato-Tainui Games start this week Waikato-Tainui is all set for its largest tribal sports event, being held over three weekends in January and early February. Held every two years, the 2014 WaikatoTainui Games is expected to attract more than 20,000 tribal members keen to participate in the social head-to-head competition. Rahui Papa, Chairman of Waikato-Tainui’s tribal executive Te Arataura, says the Waikato-Tainui Games will see tribal members represent one of 68 Waikato Raupatu marae in a range of sporting events and activities. “The Waikato-Tainui Games is one of our most popular events and sees tribal members of all ages taking part and showing support for their marae,” says Mr Papa. “Although marae will compete head-tohead, the Games event is also about our whanau getting together to celebrate tribal unity, tribal pride and tribal identity.” This year’s Games will feature a kapahaka component which aims to enhance the dissemination of tribal knowledge through Waikato waiata (songs) and haka. “Upholding our tribal history, knowledge, reo and tikanga is a key area of focus for the tribe so we’re excited to include kapahaka as part of the activities.

“We also want to encourage our whaanau to live healthier lifestyles so we will be offering a range of health and wellbeing services throughout the event including face-to-face health checks for our kaumatua. The Games will also maintain its stance on being a smoke free, drug free and alcohol free event.” Events and activities for the Waikato-Tainui Games kicked off on Saturday January 18 with surfing at Manu Bay in Raglan. On January 25, indoor bowls, Ki-o-Rahi, tennis and wakaama will be held at Turangawaewae Marae and Paterson Park, Ngaruawahia. The main Games event will follow on February 1-2 at the Hopuhopu Sports and Tribal Complex in Hopuhopu. Activities include power pulling, touch rugby, netball, basketball, table tennis, volleyball, chess and a hiikoi (walk). To wrap up activities a finale concert is planned featuring performances by New Zealand music artists 1814, Sons of Zion, Magic Paora, Sammy J and Bella Kalolo. Bacteria crucial for our beaches

Next time you head down to the beach for a swim scientist Els Maas would be delighted if you spare a thought for the invisible workhorses of the ocean. The NIWA microbiologist is the only person in New Zealand studying the processes of billions and billions of tiny invisible bacteria in the oceans that play a crucial role in how the planet works. “Bacteria are major players in the ocean but when we think about what’s important in the sea, we tend to think of something like fish or whales. While they are important, it’s really the bacteria that keep everything going. They’re just there all

the time, breaking down anything that’s already dead and recycling the nutrients for all the other organisms to use again.” To get an idea of the sheer volume of marine bacteria, imagine a single drop of sea water. It contains about one million bacteria, each no more than one millionth of a metre long. And a litre can contain more than 20,000 different types of bacteria. Dr Maas is particularly interested in the processes bacteria use to do their job and what controls these processes. Take iron, for instance. For humans consuming the right amount of iron is important

It’s the same for bacteria but there is a limited amount of iron in the ocean and bacteria have to compete with other organisms to get enough. “Luckily they’re very adaptable.” Different bacteria do different things but the same bacteria can also behave differently in different environments. For instance, in the upper ocean bacteria exist that can use light and in polar regions they must be able to withstand the cold. In hydrothermal vents – where they provide all the energy for big organisms - they need to stay alive at 350°C. Studies have found that following the oil spill into the Gulf of Mexico in 2010, bacteria on the gulf beaches were able to feed – and thrive – on a diet of oil. The oil, although low in the nitrogen bacteria need to function, did provide them with a rich food source resulting in a population explosion. One scientist commented that it was surprising how fast they consumed the oil. “In some locations it took only one day for them to reduce a gallon of oil to a half gallon.” The bacteria compensated for the lack of nitrogen by getting it from the air. Dam levels down 5% on last year

The dams which supply the bulk of Auckland’s water supply are at 80% full, on average, at this stage of the year, down five percentage points on the same time last year. Rain levels for the month are also down on average. The dams, situated in the Hunuas and the Waitakeres, have a combined reservoir of over 100 billion litres. Swim Magic Duck Boat Derby returns offering free lessons Local swimming tutors Swim Magic are offering free lessons for nominated children as part of a drive to highlight water safety. Summertime in Franklin is a great time, and the sun provides ample opportunity for water activities and swimming. Whether it be in a pool or at a beach or river, kiwi kids are raised in and around water. As a consequence of this, drowning is a very real danger to a significant proportion of adults and children - drowning does not discriminate by age, ethnicity or gender. Swim Magic would like to remind people that they should always be prepared, watch out for yourself and others and be aware of the dangers and to know your limits. While over the last 29 years there has been a 60% reduction in drowning, it still remains consistently the third highest cause of unintentional death in New Zealand, and in 2010 a report was released that showed 80% of all ten year olds could not swim to save themselves. In order to address this issue SwimMagic is offering one term of free swimming lessons to four children. In order to gift these lessons to children who would benefit the most they are asking the community to nominate a deserving child and tell them their story. The madcap hilarity and community fun that is the Waiuku Duck Boat Derby makes a return to local waterways Sunday March 16. The Duck Boat Derby has been run in Waiuku since the 1980s, and the current organisers, Franklin Young Mariners, say they are working on bringing Waiuku a larger, more colourful, and vibrant event this year. “We hope to create a ‘sevens’ type atmosphere for the event” says David Seel, the unit’s deputy chairperson and professional events manager. “As the popularity of the event has increased, we recognised the need to put additional organisation and planning in place and provide further opportunities for both businesses and community groups to get more involved.” Prizes have been introduced for best dressed crews and supporters.

Changes to the course will ensure enjoyment and safety for both competitors and spectators. The event will be run from the Tamakae reserve, which will be both the start and finish line for the race, unlike previous events which have commenced from Sandspit. As in previous years there will be both junior and senior races followed by a brief prize giving at the reserve. Food, refreshments and music will set the scene for a great family day out. Police looking for jewellery leads

Counties Manukau Police investigating an aggravated burglary in Papatoetoe where an elderly woman was tied up in her own home in early January are asking for

information about some distinctive jewellery. Among the items that were taken was some gold jewellery including bangles and a necklace.

Police are asking whether anyone has seen any jewellery like this or has had someone try to sell it to local people. The jewellery is pictured below. At about 1pm on Wednesday 8 January, a man wearing a balaclava and holding a knife entered the house as the woman opened the back door to collect laundry. The woman was home alone at the time. The house was ransacked for jewellery and cash while the woman was tied up with a scarf and bedsheet. “We are appalled at the violent nature of this crime during broad daylight,” says Detective Sergeant Simon Beal of Counties Manukau CIB. “Any information from members of the public regarding this incident will be vital to the investigation.” At this stage the only description on the offender is a man wearing a balaclava but residents or motorists who were in the area at the time and saw anything out of the ordinary should contact Police. If the jewellery looks familiar or if you have any information on the whereabouts of this jewellery or about the attack that took place, call Counties Manukau CIB immediately on 09 261 1321. Ryegrass Staggers in horses by Emma Hill Ryegrass Staggers is caused by a tiny fungus (‘endophyte’) that live within the cells of ryegrass plants. The fungi produce toxins which can affect muscle coordination and cause behavioural problems such as increased ‘spookiness’. The effects of the toxin are cumulative, so the more the horse eats, the worse the clinical signs become. Horses vary widely in their susceptibility to ryegrass staggers, so while some horses may be severely affected, others grazing the same pasture may show no obvious signs. A severely affected horse may sustain severe or even life threatening injuries as a result of it’s incoordination. Treatment involves removing the horse from affected pasture and

providing replacement forage. It may take up to several weeks for the clinical signs to resolve fully following removal from toxic pasture. Note that hay or baleage made from ryegrass at times when toxin levels are high may also contain the toxins. Toxin levels tend to be highest during drought, or sudden flushes of growth following hot, dry weather. Hence Summer and Autumn are the highest risk periods. Long term management may involve sowing paddocks with low endophyte pastures. Anecdotally, toxin binders fed daily may lessen clinical signs. Speak with your vet about the best way to manage ryegrass staggers on your property. trusts and asset protection At the start of a new year you will have your year’s planning well under way. Have you remembered one of the most important, but often overlooked, aspects: protecting your assets? How do you ensure you have protected all you assets when you can’t foresee every eventuality: the unexpected can’t be planned for! The creation of a Family Trust is one proven method of protecting your personal assets and income from life’s challenges. When you establish a Family Trust you create a separate legal entity to which you legally transfer your assets. That act extinguishes or minimises many of the threats that your business may face. Your aim in setting up a Family Trust may be to benefit your family in the future, or to protect your personal assets and ring-fence them in case of business failure. A Trust can benefit you in the following ways: •

Your business or personal liabilities will not be attached to your Family Trust so long as the Trust is not involved in your business or personal risks.

•

For the future, if you are assessed for social welfare benefits, your income and means may be assessed only on a personal level, without taking the Trust’s assets into account.

•

You are able to direct how your assets will be distributed after your death, including in the event that your surviving partner or your children enter new relationships after your death.

You and your spouse, civil union or de facto partner and perhaps other family members can create a Trust transferring your assets for the benefit of others. In creating a Trust, as property owner you are called the Settlor. After appointing personally nominated trustees, you legally transfer ownership of your property to those trustees. They legally own the assets and look after them, but do not personally benefit from them, unless you also name them as beneficiaries of the Trust. Most Family Trusts name the settlor and their family as the beneficiaries of the Trust. You can also provide separate written instructions to your trustees to record your future wishes. Your Trust Deed can be a very effective estate and risk planning tool. Have you ever pondered the following? •
