$114,000 fine for Waiuku farmers

The Waikato region has seen its largest ever fine imposed for deliberately discharging dairy effluent to a stream. The stream involved flows directly to the Waikato River. A decision was released lastweek from Auckland District Court Judge Melanie Harland, who convicted Fenwick Farms Limited and fined the company

$114,000. The case concerned events between July and September 2012 at the company’s Waiuku farm. The farm was inspected by Waikato Regional Council staff following a complaint from a member of the public. The council inspectors were staggered to discover an effluent system that had been set up with

Mayor now not coming? Auckland’s embattled Mayor Len Brown has apparently decided not to attend the previously-announced ‘Mayor in the Chair’ session in Pukekohe on Thursday. It is believed the decision is part of a number of events he has cancelled in the past week after a scandal broke out over his two-year affair with a member of a Council advisory committee who he had provided a job reference for. On Monday he decided at the last moment he would not at-

tend an event at an Auckland Primary School as he felt it inappropriate to visit the school with the expected large media contingent that would turn up. The list of Mayoral activities supplied each week to the Post shows this week only four engagements, two of which are telephone calls. Post enquiries to Auckland Council as to why, and whether, the Mayor had ditched his Pukekohe trip for the second time in a few weeks were not answered by deadline.

a pump to deliberately discharge dairy effluent to a stream that flows approximately 3.6 kilometres to the Waikato River, near Port Waikato. The subsequent investigation found that large volumes of effluent had been pumped to the stream on a number of occasions. Other examples of unlawful discharges into the environment were also identified on the property. The company pleaded guilty to seven Resource Management Act charges filed by the council. The council’s investigations manager Patrick Lynch said: “Many effluent prosecutions arise from a degree of negligence, or a want of care. It is unbelievable, in this day and age, that a farmer has been found deliberately discharging raw effluent directly to an open water course. The very high fine imposed clearly reflects the seriousness of this case. “I am sure this is very disappointing for all of those in the farming industry who are striving to achieve positive environmental outcomes.”

For me, the most disappointing feature of the fallout from Mayor Len Brown’s two-year affair has been the way the mainstream media has reacted to the breaking story. Originally broken by blogger Cam Slater on his Whale Oil website, the story was front page news on all the main news organisations. Within days though, the focus of the story had shifted to whether there was a plot, whether the woman involved had been pressured, whether mayoral candidate John Palino was aware of the affair, and suddenly, the story was about those releasing the information, not about the story itself. Getting information quickly from the Auckland Council is a nightmare at the best of times. We’ve waited several days for responses to very simple questions. And now, that massive and very expensive media team are being further distracted by the fallout from Len Brown’s affair. There is an investigation as to whether he used council funds on behalf of his mistress. Of course he did, if you count the fact that he was getting paid by us while having his affair. It’s costing us while Council staff conduct an investigation. It’s costing us every time they issue a press release. And it’s costing us every time he opts not to attend a function because he wants to spend time with his family. He’s not doing the job of the Mayor at the moment. I don’t actually care what he does in his private life. I just object to us having to pay for him while he rides out a storm that he created himself.

Concerns after ‘carjacking’ attempt A retired Waiuku woman is worried other local drivers might be at risk after what appeared to be a deliberate and planned attempt to carjack her recently. On Saturday October 5 at around 3pm, the woman, who does not wish to be named, was driving along Colombo Road toward the Waiuku-Otaua Road when she says she noticed a distinctive royal blue Subaru with no licence plates and what she described as a ‘homemade’ stainless steel grill. Two men were with the car, and as she turned into the Otaua Road she was stopped by a man in an orange flourescent vest with SMS printed on it, and road cones had been placed across the road.

She stopped her car and the man, described as a male Maori in his mid-20s, approached the car and tried to open the door. Her car had automatic locking so he could not open the car, and he shouted and swore at her as he tried to get in, before she was able to drive away. When she got home a neighbour drove back to the scene, but the Subaru, the men, and the road cones were gone. She contacted Waiuku Police, who say they are keen to hear from anyone who may recognise the vehicle at the scene, or who have expereinced anything similar in the region. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Waiuku Police on 09 236 5020.

Mangatangi coal mine gets consent Commissioners note climate change arguments to be disregarded A joint Waikato District Council and Waikato Regional Council hearings committee has approved the issuing of consents to a Fonterra subsidiary for an open cast coal mine at Mangatangi, 2.5 kilometres east of Mangatawhiri. The consents have been granted to Glencoal Energy Limited subject to conditions designed to address a range of environmental and health concerns. The committee heard from a number of submitters concerned about the potential impacts of the proposed Mangatangi Opencast Mine on the local community and the environment. However, the commissioners said in their decision that the adverse effects of the mine on the environment would be minor given the conditions imposed. The commissioners also said the application was consistent with relevant planning documents and it would promote the sustainable management purpose of the Resource Management Act. The committee was made up of chair David Hill (appointed by both councils), Dr Jim Cooke (appointed by the regional council) and Maxine Moana-Tuwhangai (appointed by the Waikato River Authority). Glencoal’s planned mine operation would be over a total of 76 hectares and involve eight years of coal extraction, the commissioners’ decision said. Issues raised by submitters on the proposal included: potential for respiratory problems in local people due to dust; risks related to noise and traffic; and adverse effects on

waterways downstream of the mine. The commissioners found that while health risks raised were a genuine concern, they were over-stated, and conditions can be put in place to mitigate dust effects. Furthermore, reasonable noise limits would not be exceeded and it was unnecessary to restrict the direction of coal haulage traffic, the commissioners said. They were also satisfied the mine would not have significant adverse effects on the Waikato River. After the mining is finished, most of the land used for the mine will be returned to pastoral farming, while a 13 hectare lake will also be formed, the decision said. The land use consent granted by Waikato District Council relates to “mineral extraction and processing, associated with the development, operation and closure of an opencast coal mine, and associated ancillary activities”. The regional council consents relate to a wide range of activities including earthworks, vegetation clearance, establishment of bores, water discharges, and surface and groundwater use. The commissioners noted in their decision that they were not able to have regard to any arguments about the effects on climate change of using coal. This position was confirmed by the Supreme Court last month when it found that “it is not open to territorial authorities and regional councils to regulate activities by reference to the effect on climate change of discharges of greenhouse gases which result indirectly from such activities”.

Ratepayers keep paying for Mayor’s affair

Post PUZZLES

Auckland ratepayers look set to be footing the bill yet again as a result of Mayor Len Brown’s two-year affair with former council advisor Bevan Chuang, as the Council announced yesterday that Ernst and Young will be conducting an independent review into the Mayor’s actions during the affair. The announcement came as Affordable Auckland leader, and failed mayoral candidate, Stephen Berry suggested that anyone else having sex at work would likely be fired. Stephen Berry also wonders how above-board Brown’s spending on his mistress could be. “Ms. Chuang accompanied Mr. Brown on multiple engagements. It seems to me that she would have been the beneficiary of some of Brown’s ratepayer funded perks in that process. I think this would be worth investigation by the Council. Ratepayer money needs to be treated with the greatest of respect and that is not something this Mayor has a history of doing,” he said. The likely costs of the investigation were not revealed by the Council yesterday, but are likely to be significant, given that the process is likely to take four weeks. The investigation cost just adds to the council time spent on the issue since Mayor Brown confirmed his affair, just days after appearing in joyous photographs with his wife on the evening of the closing date for the council elections. Auckland Council Chief Executive Doug McKay says Ernst and Young will conduct an independent review of the

Scooter theft prompts lad’s letter to police A local Primary School student has written an impassioned letter to the Waiuku Police, detailing how his distinctive scooter looks, after someone stole it from Waiuku Primary School last week. Taken on Monday, October 14, the scooter is described by the student as a Green Milazo Edge Trickster (similar to the yellow one pictured here), with one of the caps missing on the handle bar. The front wheel has green inside and on one side of the tyre it has MGP written on it. The youngster is very keen to get his ride back, and anyone with any knowledge as to the whereabouts of the scooter is asked to contact Waiuku Primary School or the Police.

use of council resources in the mayoral office. The review will examine the following matters: • any use of council resources within the Office of the Mayor, in respect of the Mayor’s relationship with Ms Chuang, that contravenes council policies (eg payments and procurement); • any improper preferential treatment in relation to Ms Chuang’s engagement as an employee, contractor or an advisor within the Auckland Council Group; and • any other issues that the reviewers or chief executive considers relate to, or arise out of, the above matters. The review will be reported back to the chief executive as quickly as possible, in no more than four calendar weeks, Council says. The review has the support of the mayoral office which will cooperate fully with it. Mr McKay said it is important that the public has full confidence in the council’s processes and that all expenditure and activity is open to public scrutiny. Mr McKay confirmed last week he was not aware of any specific information or anything contrary to the Mayor’s assurances in public and to him in person. The review is not specific to the elected members’ code of conduct but will cover council policies and procedures. The review will provide background information should any code of conduct review be initiated. Auckland Council and Ernst and Young will not make any public comment on the substance or progress of the review until its findings are released.

Exhibition at Pollok Community Day in Tuakau With Labour Weekend looming, the Pollok Arts and Crafts Co-operative on the Awhitu peninsula are in the last stages of preparing for their major annual art competition and exhibition. Their Labour Weekend event has been running continuously since 2008, when they held their first themed art competition, ‘Light on the Manukau’. Coming as it has, hard on the heels of the successful Franklin Arts Festival, one might have been forgiven for thinking that local artists might be a little jaded, but recent entries have already scotched that notion. Even with a week to go, the theme, ‘Abstraction’, has brought out pleasing num-

Boost for local arts groups

Countdown to theatre group’s new show It’s less than three weeks until the opening of Waiuku Theatre Group’s final production for 2013. It is a romantic comedy titled ‘Nobody’s Perfect,’ by Simon Williams. The season runs from November 2nd to 23rd, and opening night is sold out already. Show nights are Thursday, Friday and Saturdays, shows start at 8pm and doors open at 7:30pm with tickets priced at $16. The group says the production is a madcap comedy, with deception, ambition, mischief and even a love interest to delight the audience. Cast member Shane Hartley says: “This club has made me feel very welcome and I am really enjoying working with such a dedicated and friendly bunch. Glenda and the crew are great fun to work with and the fact

that I get to do this with my daughter makes it even more special. The energy at rehearsals is building, the set is taking shape and everything is building to a hilarious climax. I am looking forward to bringing Gus to life and making Leonard’s life a nightmare.” After the Group’s first hugely successful foray into a variety show, performed in the Memorial Hall for cancer charities earlier this month, some of the talents demonstrated there make a welcome return to the stage. “The small ensemble group for “Nobody’s Perfect” will not disappoint or fail to amuse in this year’s last presentation. So just come and be entertained yet again by the Waiuku Theatre Group’s clever cast,” a spokesperson said. “As a postscript to the Variety show, we are very proud to announce that our

Tuakau annual community day, held last Saturday, began with a hiss and a roar: a parade through the main street. Activities were held on St Stephen’s Avenue, in and around St Paul’s Church and about 300 people put in an appearance. They took the time to be informed about clubs and organisations who displayed their wares in the church and enjoyed eating sausages which the local Rotary club cooked up for them on the spot. Onewhero Tuakau community board had organised drinks for everyone. Highlight was a display by the Mini owners’ club which included the oldest Mini still running around in NZ. This display included four racing minis, who will put in an appearance at Taupo next weekend. There was also a special Mustang to drool over. Across road Soul of art was open and the graffiti art workshop, held by Bobby Hung, produced some great works done by the kids of Tuakau attended. Local school had chosen thirty students to participate, but many more turned up and rather a lot of them stayed around all day to observe Bobby spray paint on three huge boards, creating a fantasy landscape, which will find a home somewhere in the town one day. More than $18,000 worth of funding has been granted to support the creativity in Waikato district communities. Waikato District Council’s Creative Communities Scheme Assessment Committee met recently and approved 14 requests for funding for a range of activities around the district. Among the grants provided, Onewhero Society of Performing Arts was granted $1,000 for a musical production and a further $676.71 for a short film competition while Port Waikato’s Art at the Port received $1,500 for community workshops and Tuakau’s Soul of Art Community received $1,430.50 for a live painting workshop.

Opening night is Friday, October 25, from 6pm, and the Co-op are keen to emphasise that all members of the public, not just the invited artists, are welcome. As member Phil Jordan pointed out, ‘It’s not just the $500.00 first prize that attracts the punters, but the laid back atmosphere and the good company. This may be partly due to the free wine and food of course’. The exhibition will run for three weeks, and the gallery will be open seven days a week from 10.00am to 5.00pm.

Playcentre theft saddens parents Members of the Otaua-Aka Aka Playcentre are angry and saddened after the playcentre had another lawnmower stolen from its community complex on the night of Sunday October 13. It is the second time the playcentre has had a lawnmower stolen, and one of the members said last week that parents had been at the centre for a working bee and had

noticed that the implement shed in which it was housed had been opened. They moved the lawnmower to a more secure building, but on Monday morning discovered the locks on the other building had been broken, and the lawnmower stolen. The group had not long before fund-raised to purchase the mower, and now say they are looking at other options

to protect their equipment. While the playcentre is on a relatively isolated stretch of road, there is reasonable traffic flow past it, and playcentre members ask that anyone noting anything suspicious around the centre notify police. Local police have fingerprinted the implement shed and other areas and are making further enquiries.

Combined calf club a great success On Thursday the Waiuku town schools joined together for their combined Calf Club event. In recent years it has only been Sandspit Road School who have held an annual Calf Club event among the town schools, but in 2012 View Road School and Waiuku Primary school students were invited to join with Sandspit Road to create the Combined Town School Calf Club event. Graeme Newall, principal of Sandspit Road School, wanted to give more children the opportunity to take part in this iconic New Zealand event. Graeme said: “Raising a lamb, calf or kid and presenting it for judging at Calf Club is an important part of our rural communities and every child should have that opportunity. “Many of our school parents have fond memories of their own entries in Calf Clubs and want their children to enjoy the same experience”. “By offering the opportunity to the other

town schools we can ensure that every child in Waiuku who wants to be involved, can be.” Over recent years the numbers of children participating in the combined town school calf club have increased and Graeme hopes that numbers will continue to increase as more and more families get involved. There is always a supportive group of experienced hands willing and able to help newcomers to raise, prepare and show their animals. In addition to the show animals, the children of Sandspit Road School also take part with traditional indoor floral and artistic displays and there is always a special animal feature to see and experience. This year the children were introduced to Alpacas from Brookside Alpacas, (Room 9 students pictured at left). For many of the children it was the first time they had been able to get up close to these great animals.

Plumbing, drain-unblocking, suctioning and more When you need a plumber, you need one quickly, and you need the job done right. Now based in Franklin, Dynamic Plumbing Works, (DPW), is the professional, efficient and speedy solution to all your plumbing issues. Headed and founded by the experienced Cam Lowe, Dynamic Plumbing Works offers a full plumbing, maintenance and repair service, including hot water systems, backflow protection and gas fitting. DPW has the skills and knowledge to tackle any job. With a special focus on drainage solutions which include drain unblocking, fault location, hydrojetting, CCTV surveying, drain cleaning and repairs as well as tree-root cutting, DPW has the skills and the experience their customers need. A recent addition to the fleet has been a vacuum loading vehicle, or ‘suction truck’, which provides a complete service for suctioning cesspits, grease-traps, septic tanks and for hydro-excavation. Cam says his clients value the high level of communication they receive from DPW. “We always communicate with our customers as much as possible and keep them in the loop with the status of the job. We also make it a point to ensure there are no hidden costs with each task. Every cost is broken down so it it’s fully accounted for and out in the open.”

The Post - Helping you to

Similarly, this approach contributes to the quality of DPW’s workmanship. “We pride ourselves on doing a thorough job,” Cam says. “We believe that quality plumbing shouldn’t go unnoticed, and we are especially careful to ensure our work stands the test of time. “At DPW we offer expert knowledge and project management advice to achieve ‘invisible plumbing’ so homeowners don’t have to worry about a thing whether for renovation work or fixing a plumbing issue.” Well-accustomed to working with other trade teams, Cam, a certified craftsman plumber, says time management and organisation make DPW a preferred partner in most projects. Speaking from close on a decade of experience, Cam says it is important for things to be done right at the start, and that prevention is better than cure. “Things can be messy if there is a fault - that is why we offer drain checks to enable any faults to be caught early, minimising cost and systemic damage. We recommend a thorough drain check by a qualified drainage specialist every 18 months.” To keep your plumbing in the very best of health, give the DPW team a call on 0800 FAUCET, 021 764 905, or check out their website at www.dynamicplumbing.co.nz.

Franklin resident and mouth painting artist extraordinaire Grant Sharman, (pictured right), will have friends and family thinking about him when they open Christmas presents this year, as his artwork has been reproduced as a new range of festive wrapping paper and gift tags. Grant’s original work has been chosen by global organisation the Mouth and Foot Painting Artists (MFPA) to feature on this year’s wrapping paper. The stunning work features vivid colours depicting festive candles, Christmas baubles and gifts. Grant began painting after an injury in a school rugby match at 15 left him a tetraplegic in 1977, becoming a full member of the MFPA in 1988. “In 1980 well-known mouth painter, Bruce Hopkins, suggested that I try painting using a brush in my mouth and my father encouraged me to

give it a go. Despite Bruce’s severe disability (he could only move his head), Bruce had an incredible presence and proceeded to show me how to paint with the brush in my mouth,” said Grant. In 1988 Grant was made a full member of the Association and this has given him financial independence and a greater quality of life. As a member of the MFPA Grant has travelled to many parts of the world and met some wonderful people and formed life long friendships. The wrapping paper and gift tags featuring Grant’s art, along with a wide range of Christmas merchandise are available to purchase online from MFPA – www.mfpa. co.nz. For further information on the Mouth and Foot Painting Artists or to place an order, contact MFPA on (09) 827 6746.

Tall Ships in Auckland this weekend The Franklin area and in particular Waiuku has a maritime background stretching back many years and this is continuing with a visit of a number of Tall Ships to Auckland over Labour Weekend with the region having many contacts or links with the visiting vessels. The Oosterschelde is a Dutch three masted vessel which was rebuilt in a shipyard owned by the family of a now Waiuku resident. The Picton Castle was built in a Yorkshire Yard in 1928, a stones throw of where another Waiuku resident was married and carried a crew member from Rarotonga to Sydney and whose parents now live in Awhitu. One youngster who lives at Puni and who appeared on TV1 is a part of the Spirit of New Zealand crew from Sydney to Auckland. The CEO of the Spirit of Adventure Trust is a resident in the Franklin area and another local is assisting with

the Auckland visit by ensuring that the ships have the services required, both these people travelled to Sydney to check that all will well when the ships arrive in Auckland. Seven of the ships raced from Sydney to Opua taking about ten days for the passage across after which they will sail in company to Auckland where they will make a ceremonial entry into Auckland Harbour led by HMNZS Wellington and waka at 2pm this Friday. On Saturday the crews will parade from the Viaduct along Quay Street to The Cloud for a formal welcome and the race prize giving. The ships themselves will be open to the public from 10am to 4pm on Saturday and

Sunday at no charge, with many activities being happening in The Cloud and Shed 10. Organisers say it is a great opportunity to be an era which has so many links to the region of today.

The Tim Armstrong Band entertained guests with a Beatles Show at The Waiuku Cosmopolitan Club on Friday 18th Oct. With hits like Love, love me do, Penny Lane, Twist and Shout and much more, the evening was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Pukekohe Kathmandu targeted as thieves steal popular jackets A high number of brazen thefts from South Auckland Kathmandu stores over the past two months, including one in which the thief dropped a wallet as they ran to a waiting car, has prompted a warning from Counties Manukau Police to the public about buying Kathmandu jackets at a cheap price. “We advise everyone to remember that if you’re approached with a deal that sounds too good to be true, it probably is,” says Senior Sergeant Karley Hunt of Counties Manukau Police. “To knowingly receive stolen goods is a crime and we urge people with information to come forward.” The increased spate of thefts of Kathmandu jackets began in June with four robberies of the Ronwood Ave store. Since then, the two other stores in the District (Botany and Pukekohe) have been targeted, and robberies at the Ronwood Ave store have totalled at 15 during the months of June-September. Most recently, the Ronwood Ave store was robbed of thousands of dollars worth of jackets on Saturday 12 October. Stores across the Auckland metro region have also been targeted. The Kathmandu jackets have become a target to thieves, with their high retail and resale value and popularity amongst young people. Some offenders have been apprehended in these cases, but Police don’t consider them all to be linked. “The majority of these crimes are conducted with one or more thieves grabbing the jackets and running to a car waiting outside the store. The car may be stolen or have stolen registration plates. Thousands of dollars worth of merchandise is stolen at any one time,” says Counties Manukau Senior Sergeant Karley Hunt. In relation to the most recent case Police are following lines of enquiry to establish the identity of the offender, who entered the store wearing pyjamas or a onesie, and dropped a wallet in the rush to leave the store with an armful of jackets. The car in which he fled had stolen registration plates. Police advises anyone with information on the stolen jackets to come forward. Call Counties Manukau Police on 09 261 1300 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Fascinating fascinators, gifts, clothing and even more!

............................................ Nestled in the heart of Patumahoe, New To You Boutique has launched a bright and fun new gift range to complement its new and pre-loved designer labels and shabby chic giftwear. Owner Megan Wilkinson-Michie says the new range has something stunning for every taste, and says a great favourite of her customers has been a wide selection of gorgeous hats and fascinators, just in time for the Melbourne Cup festivities in the first week of November. While the headwear is available for purchase, Megan is also offering a rental service for special occasions, and adds she is excited about the new stock arriving for the Christmas market. “We have some exquisite new stock arriving all the time, and even with our larger premises we need to make more room for it, so we are having a 50%-off sale on selected items all the way through November,” she says. Among the new products in store are a selection of vintage-

look clocks, kitchenware and French Provencal trays, plus beautiful French-inspired glassware. Retro storage tins and antique-style picture frames combine beautifully with the new filigree mirrors, while vintage wall hooks and a new range of lamps will tempt local gift buyers as summer approaches. With something for every budget, New To You is also showcasing a variety of scented candles and a very wide choice in a new summer jewellery range. There is 50% off summer shoes and footwear, and, of course, the store still carries the full range of designer wear that it has become known for throughout the district and further afield. New To You is situated just a few steps away from the Village Bar and Grill, and the Butcher Shop Cafe, and Megan says the revamped range at the store makes a wonderful opportunity for a morning out in rural Patumahoe and a chance to select some special gifts for friends and family.

Celebrity picks winners Pukekohe beauty spa business Pure Indulgence ran a Fathers Day competition recently, with the winners selected by celebrity chef Pete Evans from the show My Kitchen Rules. The winners, from Pukekohe, were sixyear-old Oscar Vink, and eight year old Elliot Lim. Pictured with their prizes, two of Pete Evans’ latest books, are, left to right, Oscar, Elliott, and Elliot’s brother, threeyear-old Mitchell. At left, Pete Evans with Oscar’s winning letter.

Funding for local young axeman Waiuku-based philanthropic organisation RAYD (Rugby and Youth Development) recently provided funding for local timbersports athlete William McDonald to travel to the Adelaide Show. William was due to compete against Australia in wood chopping, and was the single sawyer selected in the relay team which was to compete in the main arena of the show. William has been part of the New Zealand Under 21 team since he was 15 years old. For two years he was competing in the double saw and last year he competed in the standing block event. The sport requires a huge amount of training, and commitment, due to the amount of travel involved and the number of blocks required to train on. The Waiuku area annually holds three carnivals which require over 200 blocks for each show, each having to be peeled of their bark and sliced to the correct size. As this is generally done in the off-season, the sport requires a year round commitment. Competing throughout the North Island this year, William says his highlight was to be asked to compete in the Stihl Timber Races at the Waikato Show and Central Field Days, where he was up against competitors far more seasoned than himself. He also competed in the North Island championships, gaining 1st in the Under-21 single saw, standing block, and double saw, and fourth in the Underhand event. At the Waiuku Carnival he was first-equal in the Under-21 championship series and gained most overall points. William is now competing against some of the best axemen in the world, and was thankful for the support provided by RAYD, who donated $1368 towards his Australian travel costs. The Waiuku Timbersports carnival is coming up at the Waiuku Cosmopolitan Club’s Axemens arena next month, and is a two-day event which is expected to draw many of the best axemen from throughout the North Island and from further afield.

Franklin area growing at great rate Auckland’s population grew by over 110,000 people since the 2006 Census, while Selwyn, Queenstown-Lakes, and Waimakariri were the fastest-growing districts in the country, Statistics New Zealand said last week. The 2013 Census figures, show the Auckland region had a census usually resident population count of 1.42 million, up about 8 percent since 2006. Just over half of New Zealand’s population growth since the last census

occurred in Auckland. “All 21 local board areas in Auckland increased in population between 2006 and 2013. Waitemata, Upper Harbour, Rodney, Howick, and Franklin grew particularly fast,” Government Statistician Liz MacPherson said. “The census counts show that population change has not been uniform across New Zealand. This largely reflects the movement of people within New Zealand as well as the influence of in-

ternational migration.” New Zealand gained 7,000 people a year from migration between 2006 and 2013 – less than a third of the 23,000 gained per year between 2001 and 2006. “After Auckland, Nelson was the next-fastest-growing region, followed by Waikato. Southland turned around a declining population, growing by over 2,000 people in the seven years since the last census,” Ms MacPherson said.

New tool for individual pasture forecasts Farmax is now offering the newly launched Pasture Growth Forecaster database at a more detailed level. Farmax has launched a service called My Forecast where farmers provide the address of their property to get customised short-, medium- and long-term pasture growth forecasts specific to their own farming operation. Farmax General Manager, Gavin McEwen said “To maximise pasture usage, farmers not only require accurate measures of current pasture cover, they also need accurate forecasts. Farmax’s My Forecast service is a powerful tool for assisting with feed planning and budgeting decisions.” He said data from My Forecast can be accessed on any device with a web browser with growth forecasts pinpointed down to a 5km by 5km location anywhere across the country. Once farmers sign up for Farmax’s My Forecast service, they can view short-term, current season and long-term reports to help them make enhanced decisions around stock feeding for today and also take into account what is likely to happen in the near future. “For example, if growth is reasonably good now and dry matter plentiful, farmers can ask themselves how the forecasted pasture

growth rate affects decisions about paddock selection or rotation speed,” explained Mr McEwen. Mr McEwen added that the My Forecast service was designed for the benefit and use of all pastoral farmers – sheep, beef and dairy – regardless of whether or not they already use Farmax decision support software. Unveiled last week by joint funders Beef + Lamb New Zealand and DairyNZ and an outcome of the Dairy Primary Growth Partnership project, the new Pasture Growth Forecaster is a tool to help farmers increase their profitability through better feed budgeting. Both Beef + Lamb New Zealand and DairyNZ provide regional pasture growth forecast data and information on select project farms on their respective websites. The Pasture Growth Forecast service is driven by complex algorithms utilising data from NIWA’s Virtual Climate Station Network and 40 years of climate data to help refine expected grass growth rates. “The technology driving Farmax’s My Forecast service is not only a New Zealandfirst tool, it is a world-first. Its use by New Zealand farmers will give our industry another advantage over competing pastoral industries around the globe,” he said. To sign up for Farmax’s My Forecast service visit www.farmax.co.nz/myforecast.

Next week is the AA’s annual public awareness week. One Waiuku woman shares her story, and her personal journey to a better life. Sober now for three years and nine months, she says it’s a miracle available to others in need as well.

‘To drink is to die’ - one woman’s story My name is Jo and I am an alcoholic. My sobriety date is the 30/01/2010 As a child I never seemed to fit in. Whether this was my thinking or I actually didn’t I will never know, I always tried to act or look a different way to try and be accepted as the part of society that I thought or seemed to me to be the “normal people”. This was true right until I walked into the doors of alcoholics anonymous. At 23 I was alone and had no selfrespect, self-worth or any good outlook on life it was just my child the bottle and I! On the 29th January 2010 I was pulled over and arrested for drunken driving, something that I should have been caught for many moons ago. Exactly a week later I walked into my first meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous. In this meeting I was greeted like a long lost friend, something that hadn’t happened in a very long time. I sat and read the steps and traditions on the wall and stood when I was supposed to and then I started to listen. In this meeting I heard people like me sharing about how they drank like me and acted like me they told me about how they never felt apart of life and the “normal world” how when

they drank they became a different person - they could dance, they could sing, they could pick people up and have no second thoughts about the outcome; they told me how miserable they felt when drinking alone how they had lost families friends and jobs, they were “speaking my language!” I found hope in that first meeting so I went to another. A Sunday night meeting in the Catholic Church, Waiuku, where I had spent many of my younger years growing up.(Lightning didn’t strike!) In this meeting I again heard the things that I had done but this time I also heard the hope of recovery that the fellowship of alcoholics anonymous provides with only one catch…. I had to do what they were doing! Getting to 30 days was tough but I made it, I would sometimes be rocking on the floor screaming the prayer we say before we open our meeting the “serenity prayer”, my neighbours probably thought me mad! I then made to 60 days and then ninety days and eventually to six months. The time flew by but dragged in a way life had never before. I was feeling feelings I had not felt in years - these feelings I had blocked and numbed with alcohol for so many years so these feelings were raw and fresh and they hurt! But this was good as this meant I was in recovery! My journey of recovery has not been perfect; I have fought the ways and tried to do things my own way. I fought God and refused to believe. God whom I had grown up with had wronged me or so I thought, So I had to come up with my own concept of ‘God’ this is what we call step two, “came to believe a power greater than ourselves could

restore us to sanity.” Yes, I was insane and yes I felt like drinking but no I didn’t want to go back to the life I had had whilst drinking, so there was two options, Drink or take step three which is “made a decision to turn my will and my life over to the care of God as we understood him” yes me and my understanding of God. I found my own conception of God and came to believe and trust in him. This has made my life so much more manageable. I now have the life that I deserve; a life I never thought I was worthy of but now live. I only do sobriety one day at a time, so 24 hours to 24 hours as there is no need to look any further. If I think about being sober for the rest of my life I balk! That’s too long, but if I just do it for today that is fine. I now am a proud and sober member of a home group and attended at least three meetings a week in Waiuku, Tuakau and Pukekohe and I contact other alcoholics regularly. I have many friends, many of whom have many years of sobriety, Most of all I now have self-respect,selfworth, and am happy in my own skin. These things will only stay true as long as I do the things suggested, everything in AA is suggested but I have to do them because if I don’t I will drink. I have a disease that manifests in me while I am not drinking so as soon as I take that first drink I create the phenomenon of craving and that then sets off the reaction of more in my brain and then I have to drink until the alcohol is all gone or I pass out. So for me to drink is to die! I am now 27 and have three years and nine months sobriety. This is a miracle and you can become one too if you want to.

If you want to drink, that’s your business. If you want to stop, we can help.

Online fuel saving tool Z Energy has launched an online interactive driving tool, in what it says is an effort to help its customers cut their fuel bills. The new tool is said to offer drivers the chance to save the equivilent of up to 40 cents per litre of fuel. The Z Energy Eco Driving Tool was launched at Auckland’s Sustainable City Showcase and is designed to help New Zealand drivers understand the potential benefits of eco-driving. Gerri Ward, Retail Sustainability Manager at Z Energy, said “It may seem counterintuitive for a fuel retailer to

help its customers use less fuel, but we reckon it shows how genuinely committed we are to the long-term future of New Zealand’s sustainability and to delivering value for our customers. “By taking simple steps and making changes, drivers can save up to 40 cents per litre of fuel and reduce their carbon emissions.” Z’s Eco Driving Tool uses six video-based driving trials to test driving habits and suggest more efficient behaviours. AA Motoring Services General Manager Stella Stocks says SUV sales account for about 30% of the new vehicle market in New Zealand and three are represented in the top 10 with the Ford Kuga, Hyundai Santa Fe and Subaru Forester. “SUVs are a rapidly growing segment in our new car market so it’s positive to see they are well represented in the top 10 line up,” Ms Stocks says. At the opposite end of the scale is the Holden Volt. “This is the first time an electric vehicle has been considered as the top car in any competition in New Zealand. “While the Volt isn’t a cheap option, it provides another factor for Kiwi motorists to consider when they’re looking at a new car which is important.”

Free W.O.F Inspection Time to prepare your car for Labour Weekend Labour weekend is once again upon us and Yes, this means perhaps having to prepare your car if you are planning to travel. Today’s new cars are so well-built, they hardly need any care at all. Actually, new car buyers rely mostly on their dealers to care for their vehicle. That’s probably suitable for general maintenance and to meet the manufacturer’s requirements, but the rest of the time the vehicle still requires regular maintenance. That is where your local mechanic will be able to help you out by verifying all the fluids in the vehicle, checking some of the mechanical and electrical points that need to be serviced, and installing tyres. Obviously, today’s main concern is for fuel economy. No matter how much care engineers put into developing today’s cars, they will not deliver the

promised fuel economy if they are not properly maintained. As simple as it may seem, car care starts with simple regular operations, beginning with the tyres. Anyone in the business will tell you that before getting into any vehicle, the driver should have a quick look at the tyres. Low pressure can cause a loss of control and increase fuel consumption. Car care also involves keeping the vehicle clean, including the windows, and let’s not forget to properly maintain the wipers as well as good lighting for better visibility. Car care involves a better running engine for less air pollution and better fuel economy and remember to maintain proper fluid levels to ensure a safe drive: washer fluid, brake and power steering fluids. If you own or drive a vehicle, don’t take it for granted. Even new cars require proper care.

Wellington ends watershed season for Steelers the opening try. Despite the setback Counties continued to press on in attack but were meet with some fierce defence by the Lions. Wellington went within metres of adding to their score midway through the half as a bone crunching collision between Motu Matuu and Counties Rey Lee Lo saw the latter leave the contest from the heavy knock. As a result Lima Sopoaga kicked the penalty to extend the home sides lead. Counties were struggling to com-

bat the Wellington scrum with referee Nick Briant penalising the visitors. The Lions were simply in rampaging form and clinical with their play which resulted in winger Alapati Leiua dotting down before halftime after some good initial defence by the Steelers leading up to the try. A rejuvenated Steelers outfit came out in the second half and showed great continuity from ruck and maul as they strung together 22 phases before fullback Ahsee Tuala put his captain Fritz Lee over

for their first points. However the Lions struck back as Counties attempted to work their way out of their territory only for second five Shaun Treeby stripping lock Jimmy Tupou of the ball as he raced in to extend their earlier advantage. The Steelers could feel a little hard done by when it looked as though prop Jarrod Firth dived in to close the gap Briant ruled the final pass was forward. First five Baden Kerr was close to scoring himself after charging down a Sopoaga kick but was un-

able to regather as Wellington went back the other way as replacement Faafili Levave scored after a scorching run by captain Victor Vito. Ambrose Curtis and Leiua scored further tries to blowout the score but the Steelers fought right to the final whistle as Tony Pulu touched down to have the final way in the match. The result wraps up a brilliant season for Counties going on to lift the Ranfurly Shield and locking it away for the summer, surely it bodes well for coach Tana Umaga’s troops heading into next season.

Week 4: Work on Speed Time: Walk 50 minutes a day 4 - 5 days a week- one of these days should include strength training e.g. hill, stair, exercycle or treadmill. • Add three sets of 15 squats and 10 lunges daily. • Mileage-Building Day: Walk 90 minutes at an easy pace. • Building speed: During each of your shorter walks, concentrate on improving your walking form to add speed. If you have not been using arm motion, this can be the key to increasing speed.

Week 4

A magical season for the Counties Manukau Steelers was brought to an end by a clinical Wellington Lions side in a 41-10 victory at Westpac Stadium on the weekend. Their ITM Cup semifinal encounter was nothing like their earlier meeting in the season as the Steelers courageously fought hard to topple the competition’s pace setters. The Steelers were forced to play from behind after untidy work at the breakdown allowed the Lions to latch on and counter as Wellington halfback Frae Wilson crossed for

Pukekohe-Metro, Papakura and Waiuku all recorded wins at Bruce Pulman Park on what was effectively opening day after the roof leaked the previous weekend and all games were washed out. Waiuku caused a boil-over beating the star-studded Manukau team by five wickets. Papakura trounced Karaka. Reigning champions, Pukekohe-Metro, had to pull out all the stops to get home over Weymouth. With the first representative game less than a month away the selectors would have wanted to see more from the batsmen. With all games played on artificial wickets it won’t please the scrutineers that only two players got past the 50 mark. The bowlers dominated the batsmen but they delivered too many wides. Jayden Morris, Papakura’s new ball bowler finished the day with the figures of 3/16, an average of just over five runs per wicket. However, he bowled 10 wides. Without the indiscretions his bowling average on opening day would have been no higher than two. The same could be said of the fielding. Despite some “you-had- to–bethere” moments the ground fielding and catching was barely average. Ant Niterl’s (Manukau) one-handed effort at gully was a diamond in the rough. All toss winning captain’s voted to bat first. In hindsight they were 100% incorrect as chasing proved to be the successful game plan on the day. Manukau v Waiuku Batting first, Manukau scored 144 in 35.3 overs. Cameron Fletcher faced the new ball and looked good scoring 28. The middle order of Jono Hickey, JJ Mills, Ant Niterl and Ash Herwels were all caught leaving Brendon Read (25), batting at nine, to try and save the day. The Waiuku bowlers deconstructed

one of the best batting line-ups in the league. Waiuku College students Ben Naylor (17 years) and debutant Declan McLeish (14 years) had figures of 3/38 and 2/17 respectively. Along with Ryan Ruddell (3/27) they put a big smile on Captain Simon Gardiner’s dial. Ruddell (56 no) had a good day with bat and ball. Waiuku reached match point in the 34th over. Fittingly, it was Ruddell who struck the winning runs. Manukau skipper, Brendon Read, a public-practice accountant by trade, won’t be relishing the thought of another not-for-profit year with his charges. They will press the reset button this week ahead of their Labour Weekend clash with Weymouth. Pukekohe-Metro v Weymouth The undisputed champions had some anxious moments before they put Weymouth away in the best game of the round. Weymouth, with memories of last year’s encounter still in their minds, chose to bat first. In last season’s corresponding fixture Pukekohe thumped Weymouth by 279 runs. Sean Simpson and Harry Lyford put on 53 for the first wicket. Simpson (23) was the first to go but Lyford (24) didn’t handle his separation anxiety well and he was on his way soon after. Nick Kelly (30) and Liam Hunia (21) chimed in further down the order. Sam Whimp, batting at number nine, finished 22 not out from 26 balls. Ash Vodnala (3/43), bowling off-spin, and Pankaj Kumar (3/40) grabbed six wickets between them and Richard Crosby (2/ 23), who was in wides trouble early on, cleaned up the tail. Weymouth’s innings ended three balls short of their full quota with 188 runs - enough to forge a win if their bowlers could perform. A back story to the innings was the appearance of ICC elite umpire Tony

Hill. Hill, unaccustomed to playing second fiddle, who stood at square leg for 40 minutes under the eye of local white-coat John Dempsey. Simon Lal guided Pukekohe to their first win of the season. Lal scored 67 (73 balls) and was well supported by Riley Hohepa - the pair putting on 73 for the fourth wicket. There was a mini- batting collapse toward the end after Sean Simpson bowled a double wicket maiden over. A trolley-dash five ball innings of 14 from Kumar, batting at number nine, got Pukekohe over the line. Karaka v Papakura Hayden Wark won the toss for Karaka and padded up. Wark himself opened the batting, an experiment that lasted three balls. The Karaka batsmen were knocked over at regular intervals, their turn coming to an end in the 30th over. Henry Gibson had the best yield out of the bowlers. He was 3/5 from his three overs. Jayden Morris (3/16) and Harley Jenkins (3/ 38) also got three wicket hauls. Terence Otterson, who was on debut, got the best individual score for Karaka. He hit 14 runs. The 23 extras conceded by Papakura were an enormous help to Karaka’s all-out total of 99. After setting Papakura a two-an–over target Karaka had no option but to attack. They took wickets in the second over (Henry Gibson) and the third over (Danny Shine) and had Papakura in 2/2 after three overs. Papakura relied on Devon Jones (42) and a sugar rush innings from Ryan Phizakerley (30 no) to record what in the end was a very comfortable win. Karaka, who must have felt like they turned up to the aftermath of an earthquake with a brush and pan, will regroup this week before taking on Pukekohe-Metro in the next round.

All Black squad for Steeler The newly-named All Black squad features four new faces, all of whom have spent some time in the All Blacks environment this year, and including Steelers player Frank Halai. The others are the Canterbury and Crusaders trio of prop Joe Moody, 22-year-old lock Dominic Bird and 22-year-old loose forward Luke Whitelock, Counties Manukau and Blues winger Frank Halai, who was part of the All Blacks wider training group this year, is also picked in

an official squad for the first time. The All Blacks squad will be led by 120-Test All Blacks Captain Richie McCaw, who will be making his tenth tour to Europe, and Daniel Carter and Kieran Read are ViceCaptains. All Blacks Head Coach Steve Hansen said: “The selectors would like to congratulate those players picked in the All Blacks for the first time. It is always a special moment for any rugby player in New Zealand and we know

they have all worked hard to get here so it’s a proud moment for them and their families.” Already a proven force in Sevens and a World Series winner with the All Blacks Sevens team, Frank Halai has been seriously impressive in the 15 a side game. He topped the Investec Super Rugby try scorers list in 2013 with 10 tries and was part of Counties Manukau’s Ranfurly Shield-winning side in the ITM Cup. Comparisons have already been drawn between Halai and fellow Wesley College Old Boy Jonah Lomu, another formidable and hard-to-stop All Blacks wing. The first part of the Tour will see 27 players head to Tokyo on Monday October 28 to prepare for the first Test against Japan on November 2, while nine players will head to Paris later in the week.

Hole-in-one at Pro-Am The Waiuku New World Pro-Am at the Waiuku Golf Club recently was a huge success with 38 professionals filling a field of over 120 players. To cap off the day, Australian LPGA member and local businesswoman Kaye Maxwell, (pictured right), who played with the main sponsor Lex Mills, played the perfect shot on the 12th and collected a hole in one! To add even further interest, there was a six hole playoff required to find the winner in the professional field. Kaye is well known within New Zealand golfing circles, holding representative honours for Auckland and New Zealand and three NZ titles. She also holds the record for the most successful interprovincial player in New Zealand. Kaye has been coaching since turning professional and enjoyed a 25 year competitive career, playing for Auckland for 15 years. Kaye still holds the honour of being Auckland’s most successful Representative player to date, and is well known now as the face behind Maxwell’s Golf Retreat. The Professional section of the tournament saw Joonsang Chung claim the title with a four-under 68, edging Dean Sipson in the playoff. Jared Pender (70) was third, ahead of a group of golfers on one-under,

tied for fourth equal. They were Benjamin Taylor, Hogan Cho and Craig Hamilton. Douglas Holloway, Leighton James , Richard Lee, Leonard Morgan, and Clarke Osborne were tied for seventh-equal with even=par 72s. The Pro-Am format meant local and nonprofessional golfers had the chance to tee it up with some of the stars of the game, and the competition brought out the best in the local golfers, with some great scores recorded. In Division One, the best gross was shot by Shayne Watts, the 1st nett was Caine Robbie, 1st Stableford Noel Robbie. 2nd gross was J Morley, 2nd net P Loosemore, 2nd Stableford D Yandall. In the Division Two section, the best gross came from T Sullivan, best nett was J Hamilton, First Stableford was Margaret James. The second gross was recorded by M Price, 2nd nett L Wilcox, and the second Stableford Jocelyn Paterson. The course played its part as well, the club having provided an excellent test of golf on a course which is growing in stature throughout the region. To continue the momentum provided by the Pro-Am, the club is currently offering special membership deals.
