11 14 15 Victory on a blue wave New Hunua MP Andrew Bayly is part of a third-term National-led government after sweeping to victory with almost 16,000 votes more than his nearest rival. His victory was celebrated at a private function at Hunua’s John Hill Estate Vineyard, an occasion which epitomised the polarising effects of the election campaign at a national level. It was a surreal sight to see a roomful of ardent National Party campaign staff and supporters saving their loudest cheers for the news that a Labour Party candidate was leading in the Maori Electorate of Te Tai Tokerau. During his speech at the end of the evening, Andrew laughed that he couldn’t recall the last time he had heard a National group cheering for Labour, but the moment was indicative of the theatre of this election build-up. Labour’s win in Te Tai Tokerau prevented Mana Party’s Hone Harawira winning a seat, which in turn meant the Internet-Mana alliance was shut out. As well as that moment, the Hunua electorate also echoed two other nation-wide trends; the collapse of the Labour party vote and the rise of New Zealand First.

Former Franklin MP Sir William, (Bill) Birch, who served as an MP for 27 years and was Minister of Finance, congratulates new Hunua MP Andrew Bayly on Saturday night.

ELECTION2014

Andrew’s nearest rival, Labour’s Arena Williams, polled similar ratios to Labour’s electorate result in 2011, but the party vote was halved. New Zealand First’s Jon Reeves also polled well, almost doubling the electorate vote from 2011. The growth of NZF and the decline of Labour was very evident in Hunua as Reeves came within 900 votes of beating Labour for second spot in the party vote. The Green Party didn’t stand a candidate in Hunua this year, but in 2011 Charmaine Watts pulled 2,576 electorate votes and was actually the third-highest polling candidate. The lack of a local candidate appeared to impact on the local Green party vote, which this year was similar to the Conservatives, yet was double that at the last election. Andrew Bayly takes over from former MP Dr Paul Hutchison, who retired at this election, and who was unable to attend the celebration due to overseas commitments. I was sorry to read of Wayne and Jill’s ‘No WINZ situation’ in last week’s Post. I would urge them and any others like them to get free advice offered by Franklin Family Support Services and other Budget Advisory organisations in Franklin. Whilst it is a good idea to have a financial plan, it is really important if life is going to change. Life changes include you thinking of taking a less responsible job (we are not always going to be at the top of some career ladder), or your physical ability is not what it was, or your income ability is going to change, or you are going to have another child or as is often the case these days, you as a grandparent end up parenting a grandchild.

Gaye Dickey, of the Waiuku Community Patrol, (commonly known as the Night Owls), says the group is making a plea for more volunteers to assist the small group who currently patrol the township in the evenings. Gaye, pictured right, has been with the Waiuku group over the past 19 years and was recently awarded by the national body for her outstanding contribution to the service over these years. Currently there are 28 local members, who patrol on average one or two nights a month, and full training is provided. The team covers a wide area, travelling around 70km per night, and providing ‘eyes and ears’ for local police. And their efforts have

The surge to victory at the polls by the National Party will no doubt focus again questions from the opposition about our intelligence services. Claims will be made that ‘Big Brother’ is prying into our private lives and snooping on our emails. But that’s surely what we expect them to do? Fifty years ago, our supposed enemy was Communism, and the creeping Russian Bloc. We expected our spies to be spying on the Russians. At various other stages in our history we expected our spies to be spying on the Chinese, the Iraqis, Iranians, Afghans and, in hindsight, we probably should have spent more time spying on the French. We expect out intelligence services to spy for us, to protect our safety and security. But all those threats came from outside our borders. Today, as has been seen with terror raids in Australia and horrific events in Syria and the United Kingdom, the threat can come from those within our borders. The rise of radical Islam, with an agenda of terror and hate, is probably a greater threat to our security as a nation and as individuals than is attack from a belligerent neighbour. Already we have seen New Zealanders and Australians involved in fighting for terrorist organisations; citizens of our countries with passports to return home. At the same time there are accusations that some mosques in New Zealand are encouraging radical teachings and ‘freedom fighters’. It is to be hoped that this is not the case, and that the horrors of Europe are not to come to our towns and cities. But if we are to safeguard against terror from within, our spies need to spy within our borders. Are we willing to accept that need?

Information sought after armed police in Waiuku Papakura Police are appealing for information after an incident in Waiuku’s Martyn Street on Sunday afternoon which saw armed police guarding the property. Details were still sketchy yesterday morning, but police were still on the scene, after what was described as a ‘confrontation’ between occupants of the property and others who were believed to be gang members from Pukekohe. Papakura Police

said there were no injuries in the incident and although armed officers were called to the scene, they were not Armed Offenders Squad members. Police are continuing with their enquiries and ask that anyone who noticed anything suspicious last on Sunday afternoon contact Papakura Police on 09 295 0200 or they can call anonymously through the Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111.

relaxing event for all concerned”. The new event, 100% Awhitu Sunset Cost Multisport Festival, will be based from the Brook Campground at the park, and will feature long and short multisport courses as well as bike and run or just running options. “Not only is it a beautiful location but being based in the park means no support crews are needed, and gives us courses that while still challenging, don’t have the dreaded sand and hills of the old course”, says Clive. There is however the option of an early start to the camping season so the support crews can relax as their competitors lap the course.

The SteelMan IronMaiden event over 72km is race three of the Auckland Multisport Champs and so attracting some top competitors from ‘the city.’ The 42km Awhitu Multisport Challenge is completely do-able for anyone that can ride, run and kayak, and can be done solo, or in teams of up to four, including traverse teams. The A1 Junior Duathlon course is still a work in progress. “We’ve noticed that recent kids events seem to feature one thing in particular – mud – so we are currently in discussions on with potential contestants on their preferred routes” say race director Justin Hurst. Next month, the Wallace Corporation University of Waikato Blues Awards celebrate more than 60 highachieving students who excel in sports and the creative and performing arts. The Blue is a prestigious award for excellence in sport or creative and performing arts, and recognise regional and national excellence, through to world champions. The awards are one of the University of Waikato’s strongest traditions, dating back to 1971. Thirty-four University of Waikato students will be recognised for their sporting achievements this year. Among the awards to be given out will be the Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year, Maori Person of the Year and Creative and Performing Arts Person of the Year.

Pukekohe students building and learning Students from Pukekohe Intermediate will be building homes with a mammoth amount of Lego tomorrow (Wednesday) as Habitat for Humanity kicks off its third annual national children’s event, the Build Challenge. Launched in 2011, the purpose of the event is to educate children from a young age about what it means to have a decent home to live in. Participation in the Build Challenge is free, and children can enter the competition and participate in events in their local communities by building homes with Lego. Housing issues in New Zealand affect the wealth, health and quality of life of many New Zealand children and families. New Zealand currently has some of

the least affordable housing in the developed world, with a house costing between six and eight times an average household income. Children are asked to include each of the three main characteristics that define a decent home: Affordability, habitability, and suitability. Affordability looks at the cost of the house, with the goal of still having money left over to pay for other things such as food, clothing, and transport. Habitability means a house protects its family from the outside elements. And suitability means the house is suitable for the family’s needs and in close proximity to allow for easy community interaction with amenities such as schools and shops nearby.

National award for Waiuku Coastguard Coastguard Waiuku was honoured with the Coastguard Community Relations Activity of the Year Award at the National Coastguard Awards of Excellence Gala Evening, held in Auckland on Saturday. The award is for excellence in the areas of public relations, fundraising or community engagement activity by an individual or unit. Coastguard Waiuku won the award for nine activities, both on the water and land based visits, which lifted the unit’s profile while sharing and educating the community about boat safety, the role of Coastguard and safety on the water. A visit to Puni School and Waipipi School provided a fantastic opportunity for Coastguard Waiuku volunteers to reach future generations and raise funds for the unit through mufti days. The school initiative was deemed so successful with positive staff and parent feedback that Coastguard Waiuku has been invited back next year. Coastguard New Zealand CEO, Patrick Holmes, says the annual awards honour the brave individuals and Units who provide a crucial life-saving service to Kiwis using New Zealand waterways. “These awards celebrate excellence in achievement by Coastguard volunteers across the many roles they undertake in serving both

In addition the awards allow us to recognize their dedication and provide an opportunity for acknowledgement at a regional and national level as well as amongst their peers. “Many people don’t realise Coastguard is a charity organisation that relies on the generosity of others to upkeep and maintain each unit and vessel. The Coastguard Waiuku crew has shown their passion and dedication to their community through such engagement and by sharing education to the

next generation of boat and water lovers and potential Coastguard volunteers.” Jeff Millen, President of Coastguard Waiuku says, “Connecting with the community through education, boating support and our volunteers is what drives our community relations activity. No activity is ever seen in isolation but rather a stepping stone to the next opportunity to educate, grow our unit, sign up new members and to raise funds. “For Waiuku Coastguard, it’s all about connecting with our community, sharing our time and expertise, put-

ting what we have learn into practice and when it counts most, delivering life saving support to all who need us.” Coastguard keeps people safe on the sea, coastal waters and lakes of New Zealand. The organisation is made up of over 2,300 highly-trained volunteers who put themselves in harm’s way on a regular basis to ensure the safety of New Zealanders nationwide. This year Coastguard’s volunteers brought over 7,300 people safely back home and devoted over 315,000 hours to saving New Zealander’s lives on the water.

The Unconquerable Life “In Him was life and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in the darkness and the darkness apprehended it not.” John 1:4, 5 R.V. The marginal rendering, “overcame,” gives us the exact meaning of the text and conveys a message of great comfort to the believer. Let us see what it is.

having loosed the pains of death; because it was not possible that He should be holden of it.” Acts 2:24. Thus was demonstrated the right of the Lord Jesus Christ to be made a high priest “after the power of an endless life.” Heb. 7:16. This endless, spotless life Christ gives to all who believe on Him. “As Thou hast given Him power

Christ is the light of the world. See John 8:12.

over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as Thou hast given Him. And this is life eternal, that they might know thee, the only true God and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent.” John 17:2, 3. Christ dwells in the hearts of all those who believe on Him. “I am crucified with Christ; nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God who loved me, and gave himself for me.” Gal. 2:20. See also Eph. 3:16, 17.

But His light is His life, as the text quoted states. He says, “I am the light of the world; he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness but shall have the light of life.” The whole world was in the darkness of sin. This darkness was due to lack of knowledge of God as the apostle Paul says that the Gentiles are “darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them because of the hardening of their heart.” Eph. 4:18, R.V.

hrist, the Light of the world, dwelling in the Satan, the ruler of the darkness of this world, C hearts of His followers, constitutes them the had done his utmost to deceive men as to the true character of God. He had made the world believe that God was like men--cruel, vindictive and passionate. Even the Jews, the people whom God had chosen to be the bearers of His light to the world, had departed from God and while professedly separate from the heathen, were enveloped in heathen darkness. Then Christ came, and “The people which sat in darkness saw a great light, and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death, to them did light spring up.” Matt. 4:16, R.V. His name was Emanuel, God with us. “God was in Christ.” God refuted the falsehoods of Satan, not by loud arguments, but simply by living His life among men so that all might see it. He demonstrated the power of the life of God and the possibility of its being manifested in men.

The life which Christ lived was untainted by sin.

Satan exerted all his powerful arts, yet he could not affect that spotless life. Its light always shone with unwavering brilliancy. Because Satan could not produce the least shadow of sin in the life, he could not bring it within his power, that of the grave. No one could take Christ’s life from Him; He voluntarily laid it down. And for the same reason, when He had laid it down, Satan could not prevent Him from taking it up again. Said He, “I lay down my life that I might take it again.

light of the world. Their light comes not from themselves but from Christ, who dwells in them. Their life is not from themselves, but it is the life of Christ manifest in their mortal flesh. See 2 Cor. 4:11. This is what it is to live “a Christian life.” The living light comes from God in a neverfailing stream. The psalmist exclaims: “For with thee is the foundation of life; in thy light shall we see light.” Ps. 36:9. “And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.” Rev. 22:1. “And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that is athirst, come. And whosoever will, let him take of the water of life freely.” Rev. 22:17.

“Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.” John 6:53, 54. This life of Christ we eat and drink by feasting upon his word, for He added, “It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing; the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” Verse 63. Christ dwells in His inspired word, and through it we get His life. This life is given freely to all who will receive it, as we read above; and again we read that Jesus stood and cried, saying, “If any man thirst, let him come unto me and drink.” John 7:37.

This life is the Christian’s light, and it is that

No man taketh it from Me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.” John 10:17, 18. To the same intent are the words of the apostle Peter concerning CHRIST: “Whom God hath raised up

which makes him a light to others. It is his life; and the blessed comfort to him is that no matter how great the darkness through which he has to pass, no darkness has power to put out that light. That light of life is his as long as he exercises faith, and the darkness cannot affect it. Let all, therefore, who profess the name of the Lord have the confidence that can say, “Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy; when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the Lord shall be a light unto me.” Micah 7:8. In the pink in Pukekohe next week To raise much-needed funds for breast cancer research a fun Pink Breakfast will be held at Mega Mitre 10 Café in Pukekohe on Oct 3rd, (next Friday) at 7.00am. New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation aims to inform the public of the importance of screening for early detection of breast cancer, the earlier the detection the greater the chance of saving lives. The Pukekohe breakfast is being hosted by Business and Professional Women (BPW) Franklin. The Breakfast will give those attending an opportunity to contribute to defeating a disease which has claimed the lives of many local people including some past BPW members. Men are welcome to attend as they can be affected by family members developing cancer. It is the second time BPW Franklin have hosted this event. Last year there was much hilarity from the judges, Delwyn from Mega Mitre 10 and Elton from Café Kaos, as they pronounced judgment on the best dressed participant and it will be just as hilarious this year. “Come decked out in pink, real men wear pink – see the referees in the rugby matches, so it will be good to see many attending the breakfast,” organisers say. “Part of the fun will be an opportunity to choose a bra which will correspond with a prize and all the prizes are of high

Thanks to the enthusiasm of Waiuku paramedic Tony Ballard and his wife Karen, a district nurse in Pukekohe, St John’s youth, called penguins and cadets, can now have a home in Tuakau. Tony and Karen are in charge of the Tuakau group that gathers each Tuesday night (6.30pm) at Madill House (the old bowling club) in Madill Rd in Tuakau. The group started a few weeks ago and already has grown to 32 kids aged from 6 - 18 years of age, divided into a number of age groups (8-10, 11-12 and 13-18). The penguins and cadets work through a set programme while gaining a badge each term. If they stay until age 18 they get the chance to earn a royal award: the Grand Prior Award. Until recently Tuakau kids have had to travel to either Onewhero or Pukekohe to join St John’s and they have done so over the years. That’s why St John’s identified Tuakau as a potential location for a new youth division some years ago. The arrival of a first response vehicle in the town has generated more interest and when Madill House became available recently as a community facility the scene was set for the division to start. Only three weeks into the new division and the number have already grown dramatically. “Thirty two is quite large for a youth division,” says Christine Manga, St John’s Area Youth Manager for Franklin. She is delighted with the interest and the group has youth from the entire age range it caters for. Healthy living, caring for others, including the elderly and pets, first aid of course, the history of St John’s, safety and communications are some of the topics the St John youth. There is plenty of ceremo-

ny in the lives of these young people, from the parade at the start of each session to ceremonies for handing out badges. And there are quite a few to get. While there is a lot to learn, St John’s aims to make it fun for the kids. “It is definitely not like school,” Christine and Karen say. They also want to make the programme available to all, so participation only costs $1 per session. The low cost does not mean that it is not serious. To get the most out of the programme a serious com-

mitment is needed. The weekly session, during term time, is not the only thing they get to do. There are also weekend courses and camps. Any Tuakau youngsters from 6-18 interested in joining the penguins/cadets can bowl up to the old bowling club, now Madill House, on Tuesday at 6.30 pm, ask for Karen and you’re in. Parents can get more information from Karen by ringing 021 176 4642 or emailing karen.ballard8@ gmail.com. Below: Christine Manga and Karen Ballard.

New exhibitions The Franklin Arts Centre has a host of exhibitions underway and coming up in the next few months. Currently the exhibition Constant Practice is on display, featuring the work of artists Ruth Cleland, Elizabeth Crosby, Phil Dadson, Erin Forsyth, Esther Hansen, Jade Moulden, Diane Scott, Daphne Simons, Jon Tootill and Denys Watkins. Constant Practice presents a selection of ten contemporary visual artists, chosen from around the Franklin area and wider Auckland. An artist’s eye view behind a diverse selection of finished works, including drawing, painting, mixed media and digital

video, in this exhibition and publication, the artists talk about how a consistently applied activity such as drawing informs their practice. Commencing this week in the Community Gallery is ‘Pushing the Pencil HARDER!’ which celebrates the art of drawing in a rich diversity of interest and style. Phoenix Brent showcases the work and talent of twenty regular students from his weekly drawing class, and the exhibition opens on Wednesday evening. There will be Life Drawing with Phoenix McGuire on Thursday 16 October (6pm – 8pm, $10). It is a life drawing session in the gallery with model, and tutor Phoenix McGuire. This will be a pilot class with the future possibility of regular life drawing classes. Contact Franklin Arts Centre on 09 238 8899 or email nansi.thompson@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz for bookings. Opening in the Community Gallery from October 9 until November 23, is the Young @Art Annual Exhibition. The show is an annual exhibition of children’s artwork produced in the afterschool classes and holiday programmes run by Young at Art Tutor Anna Molineux. It features multi-media, paintings and small sculpture. The opening is on Thursday October 9, 5pm - 6.30 pm.

MATTERS

Capital Gains Tax concern for farms The introduction of a Capital Gains Tax (CGT) could have a negative impact on farm values, especially in the dairy sector, says Tony Marshall, Tax Principal with Crowe Horwath. “Farming is very capital intensive and as a result, capital growth has been the source of the majority of the value, from the dairy sector in particular,” he said. That capital growth had encouraged investment, particularly in equity syndicates for dairy conversion, said Mr Marshall. Introducing a CGT and thereby reducing net returns could cause investors to reconsider farm syndication in favour of investments that are less influenced by capital return. Mr Marshall said that what had often been overlooked in the recent debate on whether or not to introduce a CGT, was that New Zealand already had a number of different capital gains taxes, which taxed both realised

and, in some cases, unrealised capital gains. The existing CGT regimes taxed property speculation, overseas shares and some other forms of investment. “And the effectiveness of these existing CGTs is often undermined by the complexity of the legislation surrounding them,” he said. “Whether you are a supporter or not of CGT, the key to any tax regime operating effectively is simplicity.” Mr Marshall instanced the example of the Goods and Service Tax (GST). “GST is a very effective tax because it is very broad in its application and has very few exemptions.” Mr Marshall said he believed a CGT would eventually be enacted, but said it would work best if it was both broad in its application, with very few exemptions, and was created as part of the existing income tax structure, not as a separate tax.

An unprecedented increase in support for the third-term National Party, the best electoral performance since 1899, has delivered a clear mandate for reform of the Resource Management Act says Federated Farmers. “Vital reforms to the RMA have been stalled for want of support from National’s partners in the last Parliament,” says Dr William Rolleston, Federated Farmers President. “National put its plans to reform the RMA to the electorate and the electorate have comprehensively responded, yes. There is no ambiguity or room for conjecture on this. “With major water reforms underway, via the National Policy Statement on Freshwater, we have three-years for these reforms to bear fruit. We also have three years to improve the information the public have to become informed by fact instead of fear. “Some of the electoral majorities are staggering,” he said. “More pointedly, the electorate have again rejected Water Taxes and a Capital Gains Tax. “The electorate have also sent a message

to political parties that New Zealand’s best response to global climate change is to lead the world on carbon efficiency, instead of just blindly slashing production. “Agriculture and environment were political footballs this election and it is clear the electorate did not buy the line that farmers are shirking their environmental responsibilities. Political parties must reassess policies that clearly do not chime with the electorate. “We see the 2014 General Election is a vote for New Zealand to become a primary superpower, not only doubling our primary exports by 2025, but by building resilience in our economy through spring-boarding new technologies and services based on our biological strengths, and by adding value to our primary products. “This is why we need to invest in, and enable, science and innovation - one thing Federated Farmers will work with the Nationalled Government on. Not to mention a land register to end the political circus around foreign ownership.”

Future bathroom?

Osborne’s

Australia’s SJB Architects, invited to design the Bathroom of the Future for Kohler’s Flagship store in Shanghai, China, envisaged a luxurious cocoon. Four architectural firms from around the world were invited by Kohler to design a bathroom showcasing one of five themes. The project was developed to commemorate Kohler’s 140th anniversary in bathroom design and technology. Tristan Wong, the SJB architect who spearheaded the design, felt the bathroom of the future could be a global traveller’s retreat and as such located in the hull of a ship or fuselage of a jet. Wong’s vision is of ‘a seamless, folding cocoon of new-age materials – inspired by the highly sculpted, dynamic forms emerging in car and boat design – melding highly evolved technology with a tactile experience that imparts a feeling of invigoration and vitality to anyone entering the space.’

Kiwi invention stops bathroom steaming Steamed mirrors, wet walls and ceilings, slippery floors and worn out paint are common bathroom woes caused by shower steam. What if you could banish shower steam forever? Well you can, according to the team behind Showerdome. Showerdome is a clear acrylic dome that attaches to your shower cubicle to prevent steam forming in the bathroom. Showerdome is a New Zealand invention, proudly New Zealand owned and operated, and all products are manufactured locally in Tauranga. Where does all the steam go? Well, says Showerdome, that’s an easy question. There isn’t any. Steam is only created when you mix warm moist air, with cold air. Showerdome is the barrier between those two air masses, which means no steam forms in your shower

- or your bathroom. Research conducted by the University of Waikato proves that a Showerdome, when used correctly, can pay for itself within two years. Independent tests conducted over eight months to take into account both summer and winter temperatures, proved Showerdome to be successful at lowering humidity and sustaining air temperature in the bathroom. This greatly reduced dampness, as no steam was created outside the shower cubicle. University of Waikato Professor, Dr James Carson, says the results highlighted the short and long term monetary benefits of owning a Showerdome. “Depending on the consumer’s use of electric heaters to preheat or dry out a bathroom, plus their use of heated towel rails, the Shower-

dome could save a consumer hundreds of dollars per year,” says Carson. As well as monetary benefits, Showerdome also offers significant health benefits. The primary health benefit is steam created from the shower is not able to flow into adjoining rooms, reducing condensation, mould, mildew and mites; creating warmer, drier, healthier Kiwi homes. According to estimates compiled by the Waikato University research paper, heating a bathroom for half an hour per day with a 2.4kw electric heater would cost around $100 per annum, while using a 0.15kw heated towel rail for 12 hours per day would cost around $156 p.a. Showerdome also renders mirror demisters and ceiling fans redundant. Combining all of these energy saving opportunities, installing a Showerdome may save home owners around $250 per year in energy costs alone. A Showerdome costs $285 plus installation of around $135 - $150 depending on the region you live. For more information or local dealers visit www.showerdome.co.nz

Win a Showerdome for your home this week! Forget about extractor fans! You could win a Showerdome for a drier, warmer and healthier home. A Showerdome consists of a clear acrylic dome that prevents steam from forming when fitted on top of an existing shower box. We have a DIY self-install Showerdome kit to give away valued

at $285 (installation by a trained local Showerdome installer is available at standard pricing). For more information, visit www.showerdome.co.nz. To enter just email us at info@thepostnewspaper.co.nz before the end of September, and tell us how much research has shown a Showerdome

could save home owners in energy costs annually. We will draw one correct answer from eligible entries (one entry per email address please), and announce the winner in our October 7 edition. Remember to include a contact name and telephone number with your entry. Good luck!

Police seek owners Dressed-up animals get the vote on Election day of stolen items Following burglaries from Pokeno to Auckland, Police have logged 360 stolen items which were recovered in three search warrants in August but are still looking for the owners of nearly 100 of those exhibits. A 32 year old Mt Wellington man has been arrested and charged with six burglaries of construction sites around Auckland, particularly between Pokeno and Mt Roskill. Stolen property from at least 33 burglaries has been identified and further charges are likely. Recovered items include whiteware, appliances, general construction supplies and tools. Detective Sergeant Warrick Adkin says the Operation Supernova team has worked hard to identify most of the items but there are many still yet to be identified. “We currently have 95 exhibits that we would like to return to the rightful owners if possible.” Photos of all the outstanding items are featured on the Counties Manukau Police Facebook page (www. facebook.com/Counties.Manukau.Police in an album titled “Operation Supernova”. Police ask that anyone who has had items stolen from a construction site or from an almost-complete home in the area check the photographs for anything they recognise. “A positive identification will need to be made which includes providing proof of purchase or ownership, as well as identifying any distinctive markings,” says Detective Sergeant Adkin. Police are aware that in some cases the burglary may not have been reported. If an item is identified, a burglary report will then need to be made retrospectively. Items featured on the Facebook page include lawnmowers, doors, windows, power tools and kitchen appliances. Anyone who recognises one of the exhibits is asked to contact Detective Sergeant Warrick Adkin by emailing; warrick.adkin@police.govt.nz to arrange a viewing. Police encourage builders to mark or etch a name into tools and supplies and record serial numbers on items of value.

Gardenza’s Spring Festival & Clivia Pageant: October 4-12

This year’s Spring Festival extra special!

Open from dawn to dusk, whatever the weather

End of an era as botanic maestro readies for new Rarotongan opportunity David Brundell’s 30-year passion to develop a Glenbrook Beach property into a stunning ‘garden with attitude’ comes to an end this year as he prepares for a new challenge in Rarotonga. The botanic maestro created three hectares of sublime subtropical gardens amongst stunning lakes and magical hills, and is hosting his final Spring Festival and plant sale before taking up his role as curator of the new botanic garden in the Cook Islands. It means he leaves behind the internationally-known nurseries and flowering plants in Glenbrook, but for garden-lovers throughout the region, the change means

there will be some incredible bargains over the nine days of the festival as David readies for his new challenge. Internationally-known for his clivia varieties, David says the majority of the plant varieties are sub-tropical, many from South Africa and South America, areas which produce hardy bulbs which are ideally suited to the soils and climate of Franklin. The specialist dedicated nursery features amaryllids such as clivia and the Fireball lily as well as exotics such as Butterfly Amaryllis and other species of Hippeastrum. Gardenza also produce many unusual aroids, from low-growers to giants, along with an

array of heliconia, canna and more. Gardenza also hosts the truly clonal ‘Vico Yellow’ clivia. The late Sir Peter Smithers gave David an offset of this famous variety over 25 years ago. Gardenza’s unique combination of stunning flowers and plants, plus the entrancing and extraordinary landscape, make Gardenza’s Festival a must-see for floral enthusiasts or simply anyone looking for a spectacular and unforgettable day trip. It’s not to be missed, and it’s a final chance to enjoy David’s enthusiasm for his plants, and to add, (or begin) your own personal ‘Garden with Attitude’.

New events calendar released for the coming year - book your diaries!

The Auckland On Water Boat Show starts this Thursday and runs to Sunday at the Viaduct Harbour, offering the latest developments in trailer boats, electronic navigation, fishing gear and engines. A couple of the features of the show include Addicted to Fishing’s Nicky Sinden who will be on-site with her new Stabicraft vessel, while technology buffs can see the new Raymarine sonar system which gives fishers crystal clear, 180-degree photo-like pictures of what’s under and around their vessel. There’s a host of fishing boats, accessories and new products to see and try for yourself at the Auckland On Water Boat Show, and plenty of experts on hand to help you with your next fishing foray.

Smudge says..... Those lucky enough to align their free time with good weather have been catching a few snapper over the coast once they have found them. Sharks can be a problem but those heading out to 55 to 60m deep are usually coming home with a good catch of snapper. While I haven’t heard of anything big yet, fish up to 2kg or so are the norm. It’s all hearsay of course as I haven’t been out recently but then fishermen always tell the truth right? Those fishing the harbour are having mixed results, scallops are well worth the effort but many fishermen are being plagued by small undersized snapper. Gurnard can still be caught in reasonable numbers if you can find them. My choice would be to fish shallow water around low tide. Trevally are usually around this time of year too and once again, fishing a straylined bait into very shallow water as it floods onto the banks gives you a good chance at a trevally or two, especially if you are fishing over shell fish beds. There have been some reports of great catches of whitebait from the river so lets hope it continues. We now have spring and summer ahead of us and that usually brings with it some exciting fishing opportunities but don’t be tempted to go out if condi-

tions are marginal just because the fish are biting. Spring weather especially can be very unpredictable. Skippers contemplating crossing the harbour or river bars for the first time need to make sure their boat is up to the task, that they have the right safety gear on board and that they understand what’s required for a safe bar crossing. If you don’t know, don’t go! Joining a fishing club such as Counties Sport Fishing Club is a great way to learn the ropes. I often get asked for advice on fishing gear and understandably most people want a general purpose rod and reel for their first set. Of course there is no one type that fits all the requirements. Most tackle shops have combination sets that are more than up to the task but ask for something suited to the type of fishing you intend to do. Soft bait sets are great fun to use but are probably more suited to those who have learned the basics first. While there is no need to spend a fortune no one ever regretted buying quality and most of the big name tackle manufacturers offer good basic sets for an affordable price. Buying on line is not a great option unless you know what you want and are prepared to take a risk. Shop local is my advice! Hopefully you can get out fishing when the weather decides to behave but please be prepared, take care and make the most of what our part of the country has to offer.

Disappointment over sentence Last Thursday’s decision to give a man 100 hours of community service for selling sports fish to the public has disappointed Fish & Game, which believes the sentence handed down was ‘too lenient and will not go far enough to act as sufficient deterrent for others who may contemplate such actions,’ that according to Jay Graybill, Chief Executive Central South Island Fish & Game. In a case, which was the first of its kind, Hayden Don plead guilty to numerous charges of selling sports fish over a four month period in 2013. The fish, mostly salmon, were caught in the hydro canal system in the McKenzie High Country, and were offered by texting cell phone numbers or cold calling at local businesses. The fish were smoked and vacuum packed at a Temuka butchery. The sports fish regulations clearly state that ‘every person commits an offence who buys, sells, or has in his or her possession for the purpose of sale any freshwater fish taken in New Zealand.’ Mr Graybill also says the New Zealand sports fishery is there for the enjoyment of all New Zealanders.

having a current WOF, whether six or 12-monthly, is not proof that your vehicle is safe. Motorists are required to maintain roadworthy vehicles at all times so having your vehicle serviced on a regular basis, i.e. every 10,000 kms or every 6 months, is highly recommended.

transmissions have evolved a lot over the last few years? Some automatic transmissions have become extremely complex, as they are now an integral part of the power train and are managed by a computer chip.

Some high performance engines need high octane fuel. Filling up with low octane fuel can cause detonation which can be fatal to your engine!

Holden swaps horsepower for pedal power challenge

Ready for the world Above: Dargaville’s Hamish Dobbyn (KTM), is on the biggest motocross mission of his life when he represents New Zealand in Latvia this weekend. New Zealand will again have a solid presence at the big annual Motocross of Nations, with the strong three-rider squad lining up for the 68th edition of the event, set at Kegums, in Latvia, this coming Saturday and Sunday. Queenstown’s Scott Columb, Dargaville’s Hamish Dobbyn and Takaka’s Hamish Harwood will fly the Kiwi flag in Latvia this weekend in what could be the biggest motocross experience of their lives. Often referred to as the “Olympic Games of motocross”, the Kiwi trio know it won’t be easy facing the world’s elite on such a massive stage, but each of them is determined to put on a good showing. New Zealand finished 15th when the race was staged in Belgium in 2012 and wound up 20th in Germany last season.

Holden New Zealand is swapping the technology and comfort of their cars to support the largest cycle event in the country. The popular iconic car brand has teamed up with the Contact Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge and More FM and will participate in the Holden Corporate Challenge on November 29. Holden has also challenged all Holden dealerships around the country along with other Corporate entities to join the cycle challenge and ride their bikes for health and fitness, corporate pride and at the same time raise money for the event charity, Heart Kids. Every participant will be able to join the battle to help raise much needed funds for kids who were born with a congenital heart defect or children who have suffered a heart defect caused by illnesses such as Rheumatic Fever. Some of these babies face life-saving open heart surgery within the first few days of life and for many, the battle is never over. Holden sponsorship manager, Julie Southall, says getting involved in the corporate challenge has many positives including support for kids in need. “Money raised will go to children who are challenged by difficulties beyond their control so we are challenging Holden dealerships and Corporates nationwide to get their teams together to join the cycle challenge and raise money for Heart Kids,” Ms Southall said.

“The Holden Corporate Challenge could be the tonic to get a team motivated and engaged and pedalling towards some great results in the 38th Challenge.” “There are loads of prizes to be won along with a chance to go into the draw to win regular office coffee shouts plus hospitality in Holden’s corporate facility on event day.” Event Director, Kay Brake, is encouraged by the great support the event receives from corporate businesses. “It’s an experience that brings out a healthy competitiveness whether you’re a regular cyclist or not. Eight months on from last year’s event, teams are still buzzing about their experience.” Find out how your team can enter at www.cyclechallenge.com/corporate-challenge.

Becoming a member of a social or sports club in and around the Franklin area holds numerous benefits. The most obvious of these is that it is an arena in which to make new friends. Some people find that meeting new people can be difficult when they tend to frequent the same pubs and clubs and interact with the same group of people. Social clubs can help with this problem as they provide a relaxed environment full of others who are equally as eager to form new acquaintances. This can also be a great way to make new friends if you have recently relocated to the area. Sports clubs cater for practically every sport imaginable in Franklin, whether it be traditional winter sports, or indoor sports and fitness groups which provide an outlet for health without having to battle the inclement weather of the midyear period. Most social clubs have a focus on event nights and group activities, meaning they are also a great way to learn a new hobby. Traditional social club nights include sporting activities, fashion nights, trivia, getaways, comedy, live music and dinners. There is something for almost everybody and events are arranged for you, meaning that you can avoid any organisational stress – all you have to do is show up. For those of you with a flair for organisation, or a desire to help out in the community, many local service clubs offer a chance to not only meet new people, but also benefit your local area. Belonging to a social club normally comes with membership benefits such a discounts at local bars and restaurants. You will also be introduced to new things and it can be a great way to leave your comfort zone. If you have a busy lifestyle, a social club can be a great way to let off some steam!

Counties B chasing another title Watch the Pros in action at Waiuku Golf!

5 October 2014

This Saturday is the most important day of the season for the Counties Manukau B representative rugby team, which will play Waikato at Bruce Pulman Park in Papakura. A good crowd is hoped to attend the match, which starts at 2pm, as it could see the team collect another title. The team, coached superbly by John Bell and Rhys Cullinane, leads the Northern Region Championship on 21 points, two points ahead of North Harbour and Auckland and everything hinges on Saturday’s game against Waikato, the last of the season. “Everything hinges on it, and playing the match locally, we believe, should produce the typical heartland atmosphere we need to spur the boys on,” says John Bell. John Bell says the team is keen to finish the

season on a high note, as their performances have been of an excellent standard. They lost their first game narrowly to North Harbour but have since been unbeaten. They put away Bay of Plenty last Friday night at EcoLight Stadium by 53 points to 21, scoring eight tries in all and, according to coach Bell, they also “blew another five”. “The team played extremely well, and we could have won by 70 or 80 points had passes not gone to ground or been thrown forward,” he says. Tries were scored by Andy Muirhead (2), Karl Ropati, Mark Talaese, Mark Price, Luke Graham, and Sione Fifita. Sione Fifita kicked five conversions and a penalty goal giving him a personal tally of 18 points and 111 for the season.

Flag-raising at Buckland Bowling Club

The Buckland Bowling Club had its official opening on Saturday 20th September. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate so no bowls were played however, the members got together for the usual Opening Events. The club’s lady patron, Jean Bell rolled up the jack and male patron Errol Short followed up with a well placed bowl. Two long time members, Norm Ruth and George Harris then raised the club flag, (pictured at left), and the New Zealand flag to complete the outside ceremony. The committee was then introduced to members, followed by Mike Stone, the President officially opening the season. A great afternoon tea with plenty of warm fellowship then followed. A busy season is underway with an Any Combination Triples tournament scheduled for October 1 and the Club Fours Championship to take place on 4th and 5th October.

The Waiuku Club is looking to attract new members this year and encourages anyone who would like to give the sport a go to pop into their greens on a Saturday beside Waiuku’s Massey Park to meet the members.

Black tie sports evening to raise funds As a partially sighted or blind young person, it’s an incredible feeling to be able to take on a sighted opponent in sport and win. That’s the feeling Cassie, 21, had after well and truly defeating both Harcourts CEO Hayden Duncan and Harcourts Manurewa business owner Graham Viall in a game of swish ball. Swish ball is similar to table tennis, but with modifications to make it suitable for people with impaired vision. The ball moves so fast that sound becomes more important than sight. Mr Duncan and Mr Viall visited as representatives of the Harcourts Foundation, the charity arm of the real estate group. The Harcourts Foundation is a partner of the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation, and through fundraising they helped pay for the modification of the swish ball table,

as well as two tandem tricycles, to support young people. A portion of the money the Harcourts Foundation raises each year goes directly to Halberg. To raise more money, the Harcourts Foundation is holding a black tie evening on the 9th of October at Skycity. The “Halberg Sport for Life Dinner” will feature a panel of New Zealand sporting greats including Olympic rowing champion Rob Waddell, Paralympic gold medal winning cyclist Phillipa Gray, Former All Blacks coach Sir Graham Henry and All Blacks mental skills coach Gilbert Enoka, as well as auction items, a three course dinner and beverages. All funds raised will go directly to Halberg. Tickets cost $210 + GST or $2000 + GST for a table of 10. For further information contact Annah Laird annah.laird@harcourts.net.

The Waiuku College 1st XI Hockey Boys’ season began back in April, and finished on the 5th of September, in Taupo at the National Secondary Schools Tournament week. The management of the team is very proud of their performances, which saw some very good results against top opposition. “We have played 21 games, which included twoseparate rounds, the first being the Counties Manukau Secondary School competition, and the second round being a combined Midlands round which included teams from, Counties, Waikato, Thames, Rotorua, and Tauranga,” team manager ‘Sid’ Kennedy said. “An awesome first round from the whole team saw us play Rosehill College in the final, winning 4 nil, to secure the trophy as 2014 Counties Manukau Secondary Schools Champs. “We then played an inter school game against Thames High School in which the boys were dominant all over the turf, winning 11 nil. “As Counties champs we went into the top pool of the Midlands round. This round saw us playing some very classy hockey teams in St Pauls College and Hamilton Boys, along with other regional teams. After 7 games in this round, we finished a very creditable 4th overall out of 16 teams.” But there was still more to come for the side. “On Sunday, 31st August a fine team of men, and their support crew headed to Taupo to compete in the Founders Cup, played over five days. Over the five days the team played six games, winning three, drawing two, and losing one. Both our drawn games, were nil all games, the loss being 1 - 3, with the wins being 4 nil, 7 nil and 4 nil. “Not the gold result we were hoping for, but still a great team effort, playing six games, and only losing
