The future revealed at Drury Technology of the future was on display at Transpower’s Drury substation last Wednesday. Regional and national media were on hand to record the first public showing of remotely-operated equipment being used (and being proposed) to help run and maintain the New Zealand transmission network. The major drawcard was a 150kg, 3.5 metre Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (mini helicopter) that may be used in the future as a more efficient and safer way of assessing the condition of transmission lines. The craft is quieter than a conventional helicopter, carries infra-red and high-resolution digital cameras, and can be operated with a range of 200km from its base site. Also demonstrated was a new substation robot built in conjunction with Massey University, that will enable remote inspection of switchgear, plant and equipment, and therefore faster restoration times. Another exhibit was a transmission line robot that runs the length of transmission lines, even when they are live, to test conductor condition.

Who came across well as a number of candidates for local body elections spoke to a Waiuku public meeting on Sunday PAGE afternoon?

That's the promise we make in 2013 at FRANKLIN DENTAL - here to serve you!

Doug McNally and Dennis George are former servicemen who together, are part of a local project to recognise recent servicemen and women. The culmination of their work will be a parade of servicemen, their families, local people, and military vehicles, in Pukekohe on Saturday, October 19 from 1pm. Developed under the auspices of the Pukekohe RSA, the parade will conclude with a service at the Pukekohe Town Hall, where wreaths will be laid by local families who have lost serving soldiers in recent conflicts. Doug is president of both the Waiuku and Pukekohe RSAs, and says the project has gathered plenty of support. The idea behind the parade is twofold - to provide a meeting place for recent servicemen, and to encourage those servicemen to join their local RSA. While the Anzac Day ceremonies are wellsupported by local communities throughout New Zealand, the soldiers involved are generally older, and historically, Anzac Day has strong connections with the two World Wars. However, in recent decades, there have been many areas where New Zealand servicemen and women have been deployed. From Malaya to Borneo, Vietnam, south-east Asia, to the middle East, Iraq and Afghanistan, plus many other hotspots in the world, there are many locals who have been part of the military in recent years, and it is hoped the parade will encourage them to meet with others, share experiences, and enjoy camaraderie. Doug served in the NZ Infantry in Vietnam in 1969/70, part of the Anzac Battalion, and spent 17 years in the forces. Dennis was in the RNZAF, operating in south-east Asia and from New Zealand bases, and is part of the 3 Squadron Association. Both Doug and Dennis say it is vital to encourage the next generation of servicemen and women to become part of their local RSAs, not only to provide a place for companionship and discussion, but also to ensure the RSA as an organisation can survive into the future. Much of the work of the RSA over recent years has been devoted to welfare, assisting service people and their families, but as the average age of the members increases, membership numbers are dwindling. The parade is part of a process to rekindle the RSAs, and Dennis and Doug say the support has been outstanding. Part of the event will be a ride by members of the Patriots motorcycle club, one of whose members has covered the cost of a fly-past (weatherpermitting), of a historic military aircraft.

We get all sorts of enquiries at the Post regarding potential stories, often from people het up over one issue or another. Sometimes we can solve them, sometimes we can’t. And just occasionally, we find a story which reminds us that it pays to have a sense of humour around our office. This happened last week. To protect the innocent, we won’t name the local gentleman involved, but he rang us, then visited us, in a fine lather about a warning ticket his wife had received from a parking warden in Pukekohe. The ticket suggested his licence was not affixed in the ‘prescribed’ manner. Most offended, he checked the positioning of the registration label, compared it to other vehicles, and could see nothing very different about where his one was. Still annoyed, he went to the local police station, and demanded that they tell him what was wrong with it. They duly inspected it, decided it was in much the same position as everyone else’s and suggested he contact the council and complain. He then arrived at our office, where we studied the ticket, looked at the positioning, then took a photo of the chap, the ticket, and the supposedly-offending registration. I checked the photo, had another look at the ticket, and then gently pointed out that the registration had actually recently expired. Hence the warning ticket. While the chap is getting a bit of good-natured ribbing, he does point out that it wasn’t just him, but the boys in blue who thought there was nothing wrong with it either!

Waiuku parking system needs changing In the last two weeks I have witnessed two ‘near accidents’ outside your offices. (Bowen Street, Waiuku). Drivers reversing out from the angle parking spaces cannot see the approaching traffic, (the ‘one way’ system now) depending on the type of vehicle and its ‘blind spot’! On the other side of the coin, drivers are

unfamiliar with parallel parking on opposite side of the road, as this is not a normal manoeuvre. In my opinion council has got it wrong! This should be logical and transposed for safety reasons. Jim Carnell Waiuku

Candidates meeting answers some questions Many thanks to the Waiuku Rotary Club for organising a ‘Meet the Candidates’ session on Sunday. This is the first time I have attended an event like this and I feel so much better informed to make a decision in the local elections than I have previously. It was excellently chaired by Des Morrison, which kept it interesting. When I heard the candidates deliver a prepared speech as well as answer quesVoting documents for the 2013 local body elections should be with all local residents by Wednesday. That allows two weeks for forms to be filled in and returned before the recommended last day to post of Wednesday October 9. This will ensure documents arrive before voting closes at midday on Election Day, Saturday October 12. Electoral Officer Bruce Thomas urges residents not to leave their vote until the last minute and to make full use of the Council’s website www.voteauckland.

Candidates front up in Waiuku Local candidates for the Auckland elections took the stage on Sunday at the Waiuku War Memorial Town Hall, making their cases in front of a solid crowd of potential voters. Organised by Waiuku Rotary, and chaired by outgoing Franklin Ward councillor Des Morrison, the meeting was a chance for the public to meet the candidates and put faces to the names on the ballot papers. While it was hard to pick winners from the twohour-plus meeting, Dr Lyn Murphy put up the leastconvincing performance. Dr Murphy is standing not only for council, but also for the Counties Manukau District Health Board, which may have explained why the bulk of her speech was centred around hospitals, saving bed days, and working with nurses. On the basis of Sunday, the election seems likely to come down to a choice between Niko Kloeten, at 26 years old, and Bill Cashmore, already a member of the Wairoa local board. Both spoke very well, outlining their respective positions quickly and with humour. Kloeten’s pitch was centred around affordable housing, property rights, and being a watchdog for the public, sorting out council extravagances and unearthing the things he says council doesn’t want you to know. He says his experience as a National Business Review journalist is an ideal fit for an advocacy role for the region. Cashmore spoke of economic growth, particularly in rural areas and the importance of proper planning for anticipated massive influx of residents to the region over the next few decades. A supporter of the condensed housing model, he says he does not want to see a steady stream of housing spread throughout Franklin, but wants managed growth and retention of agricultural land. Kloeten’s problem for this election was evident in the

styles, but all showed their in-depth knowledge of local issues, and board processes. Lynch spoke well on the proposed Sports Park development, emphasised the value of the community speaking up by referring to the foiled proposals to close the Town Hall, and emphasised his community involvement in local organisations. Naysmith scored points with her deft handling of questions over transport issues for Waiuku, and had support from the crowd when she discussed the way in which she has challenged council officers over her term with the local board. She also spoke of some of the successes achieved by the Board in recent years. Crompton was the more animated speaker, winning support with his reference to the mangroves as ‘noxious pests’, and highlighting his work with the police and at-risk youth as assets for his campaign. Overall, most candidates made their cases well, and the 60-odd people who gathered to hear them were appreciative of the opportunity to see them in the flesh.

By Nigel Ward audience - the average age would have been over 60, with virtually no-one near his own age. He’s hoping to appeal to young voters, but the question is whether enough of them will vote to get him close. Audience feedback afterwards suggest both performed well, with one comment that it was a shame the region couldn’t have two councillors. In the local board contest the issues of mangroves, the Waiuku Sports Park development and public transport were key topics. Local politics newcomer Rick Drayson used the issue of Waiuku’s water quality to make his pitch that councils and their organisations need to be more accountable to their residents. He used the platform to push the Conservative party and its free market policies, but will likely have a tough battle to defeat the other three. The incumbents are Daniel Lynch and Jill Naysmith, while Brendon Crompton is making a return to local politics. The three have their own

QUICK PUZZLE NO. 7317 It was a special moment at Waiuku College last Tuesday, as Mayor Len Brown officially opened the new social sciences block, a wing named for longserving teacher Brett Donald. Brett, head of social sciences at the school, has been a teacher at Waiuku College for 38 years, and principal Tom Vanderlaan paid tribute to his time and effort during that period.

The Brett Donald Wing, as it is known, completes a $1.4 million upgrade for the school adding not only the new social science wing, but also two new classrooms for a breakout area to be shared between home economics and sciences. The school has had to increase both classroom areas and teachers over recent years, as the growth of the local area has

Mayor Len Brown said he was delighted to be in Waiuku, as he not only has strong links with the local area, but also has a personal connection with principal Tom Vanderlaan, the two going to the same school at one stage. ACC levies please farmers ACC’s proposed levies for 2014/15 has received the thumbs-up from Federated Farmers. Yet with ACC levies still needing political sign-off, Federated Farmers is asking if the time has come to remove politicians from levy decisionmaking. “The proposed levies for 2014/15 is potentially good news for farmers and should save them hundreds of dollars each year, especially if they are employers as well,” says Katie Milne, Federated Farmers ACC spokesperson. “From our perspective, the performance of ACC has jumped up a few notches over recent years. From the performance of its investments to getting people fit for work, it seems to be getting the mix right. “While we farmers may work in one of the highest risk groups, at last, we are seeing an improved safety record over the past five years for dairy, beef and sheep farmers translate into lower proposed levies. “One thing we will be watching closely is to ensure any cut to levies doesn’t shift the goal posts of entitlement when farmers need to claim. This must be from a more efficient ACC rather than chalking up accidental injuries as just the ‘wear and tear’ of being alive. “That will lock in good behaviour because if our safety record does go south, then higher levies will be the result. It is in our hands as an industry to guard against this.”

A seat on the Counties Manukau District Health Board would provide Dianne with the ability to implement the NZ Public Health and Disability Act 2000 as DHBs are required to promote effective care for those in need of personal health services, including disability support and are required to help people with disabilities to be independent and to promote their inclusion and participation in society. She meets with the Franklin Health Forum. Dianne has extensive links with communities within the Counties Manukau Health District through representation on the ARC, and through the many non-governmental organisations with whom she meets, and the service agencies with whom she consults. She understands their health and disability needs. Health concerns will increase with the escalating growth of the South – a strong southern voice is required. Supported by Team Franklin.

New venture to make medical care more local

At a public meeting at Matakawau on Wednesday about the new joint venture were Waiana Collier (Community Health Coordinator, Procare), Carol Slade (Locality Service Manager), with Paul Dixon and Sue Johns, local residents.

You may remember reading the very amusing articles in the Post Newspaper written by editor, Nigel Ward, about trying to give up smoking. I thought they were a great example of how the health system should work - very local and very personal. This is what we hope to achieve with the new localities model which will make health services better, sooner and more convenient, with more services based at your medical home (the local General Practice). General Practitioners (GPs) are generalists. Rather than thinking about their patients as a specific diagnosis such as a knee replacement or broken arm, they see them in the context of their family, community and environment. They are the ones who, from a medical point of view, know the most about us and are most accessible. Nigel’s experience is a good illustration. He was advised by

Park-like living with peace of mind to match. Easy retirement living on 11 acres of peaceful, private grounds. That is the wonderful lifestyle you can enjoy at Takanini’s Longford Park Village. Living options? You can choose from a variety of quality independent units or serviced apartments, specially designed for those who require extra assistance on hand. Need your daily essentials? That is easy. There is a supermarket and other shops straight across the road, so everything you need is just a short walk away. On top of all that you will be part of a good old-fashioned Kiwi community that is safe, active and full of fun.

To see this lifestyle for yourself, simply come along to our open day.

The Franklin Locality Clinical Partnership is a joint venture led by Counties Manukau Health and Primary Health Organisations encompassing a network of General Practices, health services providers and the Franklin Community. Geoff Smith, General Manager of the partnership, explains what the joint venture is setting out to do. his GP to quit smoking. This was excellent advice given that smoking is the leading cause of preventable deaths in New Zealand. His local GP, did a great deal to encourage and support Nigel, with the journey being imaginatively and humorously documented for all of us to enjoy. These stories also no doubt helped many others realise they were not alone and could draw encouragement from Nigel’s efforts to kick the habit. Another example of the importance of the medical home and a close care relationship with the patient was given to us at a recent meeting in one of our remote communities, the northern Awhitu Peninsula. Paul, a cancer patient, told his story of frustration and anxiety. He was both enthusiastic and hopeful the initiatives we were proposing would provide a much better experience of the Health system. He also told us how important and helpful the relationship was with his GP. Paul and Nigel’s GPs are at the Waiuku Health Centre. The practice is quite large by New Zealand standards, with 11 GPs and nine nurses. It is a good example of a medical home. They don’t just see the patients that present in their waiting room each and every day. Apart from their normal opening hours from 8.30am to 7pm, they provide after hours on call until 10pm during the week. After 10pm, any call to the practice is answered and dealt with by experienced nurse in an Auckland call centre. The practice has grown over the years, originating from three separate practices. Gradually they came together with a number of those original GPs still working for the practice today. Their expertise brings with it considerable experience and understanding of the community, the people, and their health issues. For many in Waiuku, the Waiuku Health Centre is their medical home. The Waiuku Health Centre takes its responsibility to develop a healthy community seriously. They are driving the campaign to get Waiuku smokefree. You will see their posters in shop windows featuring Waiuku’s ‘Beaver’, saviour of the World Rugby Cup for New Zealand. There will be information packs for people to help them achieve this important goal, and in the process prevent avoidable deaths. The practice will also be developing relationships with local employers and setting up stalls for screening to get as many people as possible to have simple tests that will identify health risks. Once identified, the practice staff will work with the person to make a care plan if required. The practice is also very committed to ensuring a high quality of palliative care when end of life conversations are necessary. It also offers health clinics at the college and marae as other ways of reaching out into its community. Equally importantly, the practice is also a teaching practice, significantly contributing to the education and development of new health professionals. A trainee intern, student nurse, registrar and a house officer are all continuing their study and gaining important practical experience there. GPs from the practice provide medical support for the Franklin Memorial Hospital and will be influential in our plans for the future services to be delivered there. The hospital has a long and proud history which began at a meeting of the Waiuku Chamber of Commerce in January 1918 where it was suggested that the town needed a hospital because of the flu epidemic. That epidemic went on to kill over 8500 New Zealanders, so don’t forget to get your flu jab every year! The hospital was built as a Memorial Hospital by George Sutherland, at a cost of £11,198 and the opening was reported in the Waiuku News on April 28, 1923. Over the years the hospital has provided a wide range of services, including maternity, and indeed many of Waiuku’s older inhabitants drew their first breath within its walls. In more recent times the hospital has focused on care for older people and palliative care, and the staff there have considerable expertise in this field. There is no doubt the hospital will continue to serve the community for many years to come but as its role has changed in the past, so it will continue to change in the future. Waiuku and the surrounding area are well served by the hospital and the medical home, Waiuku Health Centre. Staff at the practice are actively engaged in the wider Franklin Locality to improve services, bring more services into the locality, actively prevent avoidable deaths, support our important local hospital and help to educate future health professionals. Grant helps bring science to life at Waiuku Primary Travel prize for Paul Waiuku Primary School received a boost for its environmental projects last week, when glass recycler O-I NZ granted $1500 towards a bee-keeping concept developed by teacher Trevor Bennett. The cheque was handed over by Hunua MP Dr Paul

Hutchison last Friday, with plenty of students on hand to celebrate the donation. Dr Paul emphasised the importance of environmental studies, and told the audience about a visit he had made to an American river, which was so polluted with oils and other industrial

waste that it would actually catch fire regularly. O-I NZ is the sponsor of the NZ Glass Environmental Fund, which makes $25,000 available to schools annually. The fund was established in 1983 to give students an opportunity to undertake environmental studies. Teacher Trevor Bennett says the idea to develop an ‘environmental compound’ at Waiuku Primary has grown, and he hopes to

establish an area within the school grounds where students can interact with science projects and environmental ideas in a hands-on way. Trevor adds that part of the bee-keeping initiative will be to show students the benefits of bees in the environment, and take away their fear of swarms. Below: Teacher Trevor Bennett accepts the $1500 cheque from Dr Paul Hutchison on Friday.

Pukekohe Travel held a very well-supported Cruise Expo at the Franklin Club in Pukekohe last Tuesday evening. A host of cruise providers did presentations and discussed a number of travel options with the large crowd. One lucky person was in line to win a free three-night cruise and after a quick quiz question, it was Paul Bunker who claimed the prize. Paul is pictured above with Damian O’Connor, Tours Manager from Pukekohe Travel.

Glenbrook lifestyle block owner Frank Lovatt had a surprise when he collected his eggs last week, finding this 125 gram monster. He believes it has been laid by one of his Brown Shavers, which has already produced eggs weighing 94g and 112g until this monster. Frank says his son in law and daughter, Carl and Angela de Klerk are the main carers for the 14 or 15 hens on his property. An average egg weighs about 57g, with anything over 73g considered extra large. Apparently, the largest hen egg was a five-yolked egg measuring 300mm around the long axis, 225mm

inches around the short and weighing nearly 340g! It was laid by a Black Minorca at Mr. Stafford’s Damsteads Farm, in England, in 1896.

Waiuku College Canteen Fundraiser 2013 Waiuku College turned on a day to remember with their Canteen fundraiser this year. $3200 has been raised to date, with some more money still to come in. There were fundraising events of every description, from leg waxing, chest waxing, stalls selling items, and even drama students dressed up as part of their achievement standards. Performing street theatre, they had to devise a character, design a costume and make up, and wander through the crowds and remain in character. In a carnival atmosphere, the First XV members performed a haka, led by

Naylor Brown for Drew Mariss, who had his 30cm-long hair cut off for the cause, while a number of other students also had their hair cut for charity. Some first XV members even had their legs waxed on the day, while Callum McSorley had his chest hair waxed –and auctioned it off for $25. Canteen bandanas were also sold through the school, while in the morning all the form classes were challenged to put all their old Canteen bandanas into a ‘Rope of Hope’, with a prize for the longest rope. Class 13NO won the senior competition, while 10KI were the junior winners.

Welcome to Issue 36 of the Awhitu Peninsula Landcare newsletter. Thanks to everyone who attended the opening of our native plant nursery on the Council Domain at Matakawau, next to Awhitu School. This has now been in operation for three months, and all is going well. With volunteer help, we aim to keep our

doors open every weekday morning. We welcome visitors, do come and have a look around. From our base there, our work with pest control continues and has moved up a notch in recent times. Every year in this country a whopping 26 million native forest birds perish to mammalian predators. Scary, but true.

Awhitu Peninsula Landcare Inc

Awhitu Landcare Plant Nursery benefits all

Why eco-source? The Landcare nursery will propagate eco-sourced plants grown from seed collected from established, healthy, naturally occurring local plant stocks. Why? Because those old, healthy Peninsula plants have developed over many generations to have the plant characteristics most likely to flourish in our unique Awhitu environment. Eco-sourcing is not about re-creating a frozen portion of time like a snapshot of natural history. It’s an attempt to protect biodiversity and kick start natural processes such as natural selection, seed dispersal, succession.

It’s about moving forward, using the past as a reference point to get started.

Above: Eco-sourcing requires careful selection of seed.

Why should we care about biodiversity? Biological diversity, or ‘biodiversity’ for short, describes the variety of all biological life - species of plants, animals, fungi and micro-organisms - the genes they contain and the ecosystems on land or in water where they live. It is the diversity of life on earth. Our very existence depends upon it. We should care.

Tax reform encourages conservation planting Riparian plantings by farmers can now be deducted as an operational expense rather than classified as capital expenditure after recent amendments to the Income Tax Act. Conservation Minister Dr Nick Smith says: “The key change is that it now explicitly allows deductions for plantings to prevent or mitigate discharges into water courses or water bodies. It also extends the provision from just trees to shrubs and other plantings. Farmers are practical stewards of their land who know the benefits of riparian planting for reducing nutrient and sediment run-off. My challenge to the farming sector is to use this tax change to pick up the pace of riparian planting.” Below: There are many benefits to planting waterways.

Accept a gift and protect our birds!

We have the opportunity to give away some quality cat collars to Waiuku RD3 and RD4 residents, in a bid to protect Awhitu’s native birds. Studies have found bell collars can cut bird kills by 50%. The one-size-fits-all, vet-approved collars have two bells and a safety release in case of snagging. They are reflective, which is even more of a ‘danger signal’ to birds. Two bells are necessary as some cats learn how to silence one! A Landcare spokesperson says: “We put a great deal of effort into pest trapping but the cat collars could be even more beneficial for wildlife. It’s a really simple thing people can do to protect a lot of birds and help solve the problems we’re facing. We don’t want to get rid of cats. We realise cats are part of people’s lives. We advocate responsible ownership.” Unfortunately the statistics are shocking. New Zealand’s 1.4 million domestic cats are estimated to kill about five million native birds a year. Contact Landcare for your free cat collar while stocks last - and help save our birds.

We have committed to the major undertaking of our own native plant nursery with the simple objective of making revegetation on Awhitu Peninsula land, especially water catchment areas, as easy and affordable as possible. Our volunteers hope to produce up to 20,000 eco-sourced native plants a year once we are in full production. We aim to work with landowners to provide an ‘in ground’ cost for plants - ie Landcare supply both the plants and the labour at an affordable cost. The objective being to assist busy landowners carry out revegetation projects, to recover any costs incurred in raising the plants and perhaps provide some local employment. So the cycle becomes self-

funding and hopefully everybody benefits - but most especially the land and waters surrounding our Peninsula, and the wildlife therein. We will not be making door sales from the nursery, rather we will work with landowners and grow plants for identified projects, with each site being individually assessed. It is certainly not our intention to compete with any Peninsula nurseries. Volunteer planting projects on public reserve land, for the benefit of the community, will continue as before. Monthly potting sessions are proving very popular (we have fun while we work) - contact us for details. Above: Volunteers worked hard to establish the plant nursery.

Manukau Lighthouse now surrounded by native plants The planting session at Manukau Heads Lighthouse saw Waiuku College pupils under the direction of teacher Jane Patterson in action. Essential guidance was given by Anna McNaughton and other Landcare volunteers. In Anna’s words: ”Successfully dodged some VERY heavy weather to complete flax, pohutukawa planting, flax trimming, wattle clearance, garden tidying, prism cleaning etc. Have begun harvesting baby flax plants from car park water table. Great plants. There will be gaps to fill next year or two. “But, basically the whole lighthouse surround is planted now”. Everything achieved on the day was gratefully re-

ceived by Lighthouse Trustees, who will always have room for volunteers keen to keep this magnificent site looking its best for its many

visitors. Above; Waiuku College planters tackle one of the steeper ridges below the lighthouse.

Community plantings successful again Another season of Landcare community plantings has come to an end. Loyal volunteers have turned up in all weathers, working to improve the biodiversity and natural environment on public reserves on the Peninsula. Thanks to them, thousands more native plants are in the ground after this winter. Five community areas; Hamilton’s Phone: 09 235 7835

Gap/ Waimatuku, Awhitu Central Reserve wetland, Awhitu Central Social Club, Manukau Heads Lighthouse, and Pollok Wharf Reserve have been tended to by volunteers, who were delighted to see last year’s plantings thriving, as a testament to their prior labour. Something they can show with pride to their children and grandchildren alike.

Labour Weekend walk over historic Puketapu Another popular Awhitu Landcare field walk will take place at Labour weekend - Sunday 27th October starting 1pm. This will be over one of the most historic (for both Maori and European) farms on the Peninsula - ‘Puketapu’. Conservation-focused farming by Landcare stalwart David Craig and his wife Antonia culminated in this property winning NZ’s top environmental award - a Green Ribbon from the Ministry of the Environment - in 1999. Their Puketapu homestead was built in the 1860’s

and the farm has some of the largest native trees on the Peninsula. We will have a rare opportunity to walk to a waterfall (QEII cove-

nanted), and view extensive wetland plantings, one of which has just been completed this winter. Puketapu is now a beef farm, fin-

ishing steers for the export market. The walk will take at least two hours, over hilly to steep terrain. Walkers therefore need to be reasonably fit (access for ‘rescue’ vehicles is not possible), wear sturdy footwear and bring their own water. No dogs please. Parking available on the farm, which is accessed at the end of Hamilton Road, Awhitu Central. A gold coin donation towards Landcare projects is appreciated. Left: Some Puketapu bush has been shut up for 20 years.

Possum progress stepped up Spring is a good time to fill your bait stations, with birds at the peak of nesting activity - so if you have been too busy over winter, now is a perfect time to get on to it. Bait supplies are available from Landcare for residents of RD3 and RD4 Waiuku - contact Landcare, or Ian McNaughton 235 0851. The broadifacoum bait is also very effective at reducing rat numbers. With reports of big rat populations through autumn/ winter, it is valuable to keep on top of these pests which are also very destructive of eggs and baby birds. Bait stations are also available - if yours are succumbing to old age, or you need a few more for your property - get in touch. If you are not comfortable with using bait and prefer to trap

- we also have a good supply of Timms traps to buy or hire. Landcare have stepped up the Awhitu possum control programme, recruiting local Peter Shepherd to focus on problem areas in the top end of the Peninsula where there is a lot of difficult-to-access, hilly, bush country - perfect for possums. We have also been able to add feratox poisoning to our arsenal; this has to be much more carefully monitored than broadifacoum, but it is very useful for bait-shy possums, or “hotspots” where dense populations have established. Residents in areas where we plan to run a feratox line are given plenty of notice, so everyone is aware when and where the programme is running.

Residual trap catch (RTC) tests, which are done regularly to measure the effectiveness of our programme, recently came in at 4% - lowest for two years. Hotspots found are being targeted now. Professional operators will be running catch traplines soon - property owners will be contacted by contractors before lines are set. A good eradication programme through Spring should enable us to get down below the magic 4% barrier. Research through the Ark in the Park project in the Waitakere Ranges has found that tui and kereru are particularly susceptible to higher possum numbers; getting below 4% leads to a huge benefit, with far greater numbers hatching and surviving.

The Australasian Bittern - a rare and elusive local The Australasian bittern, or Matuku, endemic to New Zealand, Australia and New Caledonia, has suffered almost catastrophic losses - it is now on the endangered list. Here, the destruction of wetland habitat, predators, road kill, power line entanglements, accidental shooting, and a fad for utilising their feathers for fly-fishing, have all contributed to a high attrition rate. A member of the Heron family, the bittern is partly nocturnal, feeding on fish, eels, frogs, freshwater crayfish and insects. They are completely dependent on quality wetland habitat, favouring raupo-fringed areas which enable these shy birds to remain undetected. Their camouflaging plumage, and ability to stand completely still with head and beak vertical, makes spotting the birds extremely difficult; if startled they may take off, which gives a great view of a large and impressive bird. The preferred nesting site is within the raupo margin, with four eggs usually laid, incubated by the female only the male often has multiple partners. It is particularly difficult to monitor bittern populations. The current most effective method is the recording of the Phone: 09 235 7835

Email: info@thepostnewspaper.co.nz

“booming” calls of the male bittern, which can be heard through the breeding season - September through December, with dawn and dusk the best times for hearing these calls. DOC is funding a major bittern population assessment project, with Emma Williams, project leader, recently speaking to the South Auckland Ornithological Society on her work involving the Whangamarino wetland - currently home to a network of regularly monitored recorders. One hopeful sign in our district is an increase of sightings in and around protected wetlands. Bittern sightings often occur quickly once a wetland is under restoration, so it is clear that every wetland project has great potential to assist the recovery of these birds. Pest control is an essential adjunct as the lowlying nests are vulnerable to possums, rats, cats, and mustelids. Emma would love to hear of bittern sightings, or the finding of a dead bird - her email is bittern.wills@yahoo.com. Sightings can also be recorded on the website http://bittern-tracker.blogspot.co.nz/. Above: Australasian bittern in nest with chicks, 1959. Photo M.F.Soper, DOC.

Web: www.thepostnewspaper.co.nz

With the possum control programme moved up a notch, Landcare are now able to increase the focus on mustelids - in our district, ferrets and stoats are the mustelid family members most often sighted. Ferrets were farmed for fur in RD3; escapees have established populations throughout the peninsula. Occasional road kills suggest considerable populations; reports of dead chickens - often killed and not eaten, but with tell-tale injuries around the head and neck - point to ferrets. Stoats are sometimes seen sinuously crossing country roads; smaller and more secretive than ferrets they are rarely seen in the open. Both species are very efficient killers of birds, baby birds and relish eating eggs, so it is important to target them, along with possums and rats, to assist the survival of our bird populations. Landcare have purchased extra traps, and our mustelid programme will have two prongs. Firstly, the establishment of a mustelid trapline using DOC 200 traps, in an area of Waipipi where ferrets have been since the fur farming days. The other important part of the programme will be the self-help aspect, with more traps available to loan out to locals who have sighted either ferrets or stoats, or think they may have them on their properties. Local expert trapper, Martin Robertson, will be assisting us with the programme, and will be starting off with a demonstration of trap baiting and setting, utilising several different types of traps. This will take place at the Landcare nursery, Matakawau Domain, Saturday 19th October, 10am-midday. All welcome to attend and learn the tricks of catching these wily, destructive little creatures…one of the very few animals who kill for sheer pleasure. Above: Expert Martin Robertson will demonstrate effective trapping at the workshop.

Waiuku Policing report by Sergeant Simon Palmer

Street robberies lead to safety reminders Hi, I hope the last couple of weeks have been good. In the past couple of weeks we have had a male take some money directly out of a shop till and do a runner, and also another, (or the same individual?) rob some youths of money and a phone. Police are continuing with their enquiries in relation to both of these incidents. It could be a timely reminder to point out a few ways to keep you safe. Luckily Waiuku does not have a lot of street issues but people still need to be on their guard. A burglary is generally when someone enters your home, or shop after hours, and steals items. A robbery is when there is some level of violence associated to the theft, for example pushing you over, punching you, or threatening you in some manner. Here are some general pointers to keep you safe: • If confronted then give them what they want. Don’t panic. • Remain calm and do not try to be a hero, that’s Batman’s job. • Try and get a good description of the offender, their direction of travel and any vehicles they took off in. Note clothing, facial features, skin colour, age, smells, tattoos, hair length and colour. As much about them as you can.

• Don’t walk down dark alleyways, especially if there is a group of people hanging around there. • Needless to say walking around town by yourself, drunk, is just an incident waiting to happen. With most bars having a courtesy van this can be safer than walking home. • Consider your own homes security systems, lighting, latches, deadbolts and how you keep your valuable items or garden equipment locked away. • Remember that dirty surfaces are hard to get fingerprints off, a good excuse to keep things clean and tidy! • Remember not to touch anything, and preserve the area the offender went or what they touched. • Make sure you have gone through different scenarios or training with your family members or staff so they know what to do in times of trouble. • Anytime an offender is present, or just left is a 111 call. Ringing the Police 1 hour later can be frustrating. • One final point is that criminals like easy opportunities, so by being proactive, alert, and being a difficult target you are most likely to avoid being a victim of crime. Waiuku Police conducted a drugs search warrant at an address on Kirk Street. A

19 year old male has already pleaded guilty to selling cannabis. Nine tinnies, money and other drug paraphernalia was located at the address. Police will be keeping a close eye on this address in the future, and of course may well pay a visit if things do not change. A 19 year old male was arrested for doing skids at an intersection. He lost control, hit the bank and wrote his car off. He will also have to appear in court for his actions. Police went to speak to a person at an address on Kitchener Road. Cannabis could be smelt so a search of the address and vehicles was conducted. At eight in the morning most people have breakfast, some light up and have a smoke! A 50 year old female was arrested for being in possession of three tinnies. As usual

a CYFS referral has been sent through. It’s amazing how some people can justify being a good parent when they are using various drugs at all times of the day in front of their child. Remember that there is a total liquor ban in the Waiuku business area, all parks, the beach, Massey Park, and most recreational areas around Waiuku including Waitangi Falls and the grassed area down by the Fire Station. No alcohol at all, it is an arrestable offence, so do not have alcohol on you. Karioitahi is a 24 hour, 7 day a week liquor ban area. It is also timely to remind people about their driving on the Beach. It is classified as a road, so any idiotic behaviour such as donuts, skids or racing is likely to get your car impounded. Especially in the area where families park their vehicles, play and swim should be a no go area. Remember the 20km speed and keep off the sand dunes. Please remember that skateboarders and scooters are not allowed in town. Do not ride them, or use them in town. There are signs, no excuses. The Crimestoppers number is 0800 555 111 or www. crimestoppers-nz.org. Use this if you want your information to be anonymous.

Garden with Attitude hosts Spring Festival Nestled on an 8-hectare property on Glenbrook Beach Road, the Franklin gem that is Gardenza, ‘the garden with attitude’, hosts its annual Spring Festival and Clivia Pageant from this Saturday. Botanic maestro David Brundell, (pictured left), has been developing the former dry-stock farm for over 30 years, and has created three hectares of sublime subtropical gardens amongst stunning lakes and magical hills with breathtaking vistas. Just days away from the Festival, David’s infectious enthusiasm and world-leading knowledge is evident as he points out some of the plants just coming into bloom. Internationally-known for his clivia varieties, some of which have been developed over almost three decades, David says the majority of the plant varieties are sub-tropical, many from South Africa and South America, areas which produce

hardy bulbs which are ideally suited to the soils and climate of Franklin. The specialist dedicated nursery features amaryllids such as clivia and the Fireball lily as well as exotics such as Butterfly Amaryllis and other species of Hippeastrum. Gardenza also produce many unusual aroids, from low-growers to giants, along with an array of zingebers, such as heliconia, canna and the outrageous Lotus banana. Gardenza also hosts the truly clonal ‘Vico Yellow’ clivia. The late Sir Peter Smithers gave David an offset of this famous variety over 25 years ago. Gardenza’s unique combination of stunning flowers and plants, plus the entrancing and extraordinary landscape, make Gardenza’s Festival this week a must-see for floral enthusiasts or simply anyone looking for a spectacular and unforgettable day trip.

Wine and Dine Flyer a steaming success Last weekend, for only the second time in almost 50 years, a passenger train departed from Waiuku. The occasion was the Wine and Dine Flyer organised by the Glenbrook Vintage Railway and Railway Enthusiasts Society. Headed by the GVR’s flagship locomotive Ja 1250 “Diana”, the excursion departed Waiuku early on Sunday morning bound for Waimauku and Hellensville via the West Auckland suburban rail system. With the majority of the sold-out excursion’s 300 passengers boarding at either Waiuku’s Victoria Avenue station or at Glenbrook station, the trip was a workout handled beautifully by the 64 year old locomotive and the GVR’s fleet of heritage carriages, many of which are more than 100 years old. About half of the passengers alighted the train at Waimauku for lunch and an afternoon’s entertainment at the Settlers Country Manor.

PropertyPages Your Guide to finding the perfect home 

While the train picked up more passengers for the further half hour run through to Hellensville, one group of which included a 70th birthday party complete with musicians. Excursion organiser Ben Jeffcoat said “Ja 1250 “Diana” handled the 200 ton train very well, keeping on time throughout the day. The locomotive did the GVR team proud on Sunday and it was really great to get the locomotive back out on the mainline running public excursion trains, she attracted a lot of attention throughout the day as she steamed her way north.” “It was a wonderful day and possibly the best excursion we have run since getting back in to mainline running. All the passengers I have spoken to thoroughly enjoyed the day, we even had a couple get engaged while on the train which is a first for us. We have another excursion in the pipeline for later in the year so keep an eye out for that.” The Glenbrook Vintage Railway reopens for its regular operating season again at Labour weekend and runs every Sunday thereafter until Queens Birthday.

Pass rates for theory tests at 70% Drop in teen crashes The NZ Transport Agency is congratulating young drivers and their parents for working hard to learn the road code as pass rates for New Zealand’s computerised learner driver licence theory test have hit 70% for the first time, while serious crashes

involving teenage drivers drop to record lows. Nationwide the pass rate for the Class 1 (car) theory test reached 70% in July this year, and while a slight drop to 67% was recorded in August, the national pass rate is up significantly from 60% at

the same time last year and less than 50% in 2009. The Transport Agency introduced computerised theory testing for learner driver licence tests in November 2009. The test asks 25 general and 10 class-specific questions randomly selected from a databank of over 200 questions, but unlike the old paper ‘scratchie’ tests which the computerised test replaced, it presents them as a random string of 35 questions. Applicants must answer 32 out of 35 questions correctly to pass. Transport Agency Road Safety Director Ernst Zollner said when the computerised test was introduced in 2009 it quickly became apparent that the old paper scratch test was well past its use by date. “The old test was more than 10 years old and all of the questions, the answers and their exact sequences were well known. It was apparent that many learner licence applicants were memorising the tests and learning by rote rather than actually studying the full road code

and learning the road rules. “For that reason we expected to see a drop in the pass rate in the early days of computerised testing, and we did. “The overall pass rate dropped from 77% in the last six months of the old paper testing regime to less than 50% when the computerised test was first rolled out in November 2009. “Since that time we’ve seen the pass rate for computerised theory testing steadily increase as young drivers have gotten the message that they really need to learn the road code before sitting the test. “That’s great news for everyone who uses the road, because we need our newest drivers to be safe drivers who understand the road rules.” The Transport Agency also encourages young drivers who have passed the theory test and gained a learner licence to put in plenty of supervised practice and use the free resources at www. practice.co.nz to prepare for the more challenging restricted licence practical test which was introduced in February last year.

ACC welcomes a fall in fatalities and serious injuries among young drivers, and is pleased at the role that the injury prevention initiative ‘Practice’ is playing in this trend. Figures released by NZTA last week revealed that fatalities among teenage drivers fell from 64 in 2008, to 24 in 2012. Serious injuries in the same group have reduced from 411 in 2008, to 233 in 2012. ACC’s General Manager of Insurance and Prevention Services, John Beaglehole, says “Practice is a free, practical driving programme, which helps new drivers prepare for the restricted tests.” Mr Beaglehole says “ACC developed Practice in collaboration with NZTA, after overseas experience showed that increasing the amount of supervised driving in the early phases of the licensing system is a key way to reduce novice driver crashes. “Practice is all about getting out there and driving, because the more time a learner driver spends in the driver’s seat, the safer they’ll be on the road.” “The programme involves the learner driver nominating a dedicated driving guide, and aiming to clock up 120 hours of supervised driving, before the learner gets their restricted licence and drives solo.” Practice provides: • free online help to learn a range of driving skills, from basic to advanced • free online videos showing how to learn key skills • a free driving manual to help the driving guide teach, and the learner driver achieve. Mr Beaglehole says :“It’s very satisfying to see Practice contributing to making the roads safer for younger drivers, among the other measures highlighted by NZTA, such as tougher driving tests and a zero alcohol policy for young drivers.”

Pukekohe, Waiuku, help the Bash 100 more Pukekohe and Waiuku residents put their hands in their pockets on the weekend to help disadvantaged kids as the Variety Bash hit town. The convoy of classic cars and fire engines stopped through both towns, shaking buckets, tooting horns

and flashing lights, the crews in fancy dress setting up impromptu roadblocks to shake loose the area’s small change. And the two rural towns came up trumps, weighting down the Variety collection buckets for a total of $3001. The Bash crews had al-

racers on track

The New Zealand Racing Drivers League – which kicks off its four event programme for 2013-2014 at Hampton Downs on September 28 and 29 with the BNT V8 SuperTourers - has so far created more than 100 new motorsport license holders, helping to buck a trend for falling grid numbers in categories and series in New Zealand in recent seasons. The new 2K Cup category has been the primary contributor to that, with the Historic Racing Club - the organisation behind the series – holding special ‘meet and greet’ and licensing evenings to cater for demand. The League’s new rotary class, the RRE, has also created new license holders and the Honda Cup has also seen its ranks swell with around ten new racers. A full 46 car 2K Cup grid is guaranteed at Hampton Downs, with the Honda Cup expecting to field 25 cars and the RRE around 16. In addition to the new license holders, the League estimates that around 15 new race cars are being or have been created for classes outside of 2K Cup that will run predominantly in the League. THE ROAD AHEAD Post Motoring

Local racer pursuing his professional dream From Pukeoware School to international motorsport is the pathway local lad Nick Farrier has laid out, after making his debut this year as a rookie driver in the V8 challenge cup, a support class for the New Zealand Supertourers. After recently competing at Taupo Motorsport Park Nick is currently third in the championship with three more rounds of the seven-round series remaining. Nick’s Ford Falcon was originally raced in the NZV8 series by Dean Perkins. The V8 Challenge Cup was created as a platform for these older-generation cars to be raced by young and rookie drivers to gain some experience before going out in the main game. Nick says that there is

nothing better than the adrenaline rush you get as you wait for the start flag to drop, rubbing mirrors with the car next to you. The remaining rounds in the series will be held at Hampton Downs this weekend, October 19/20, and at Pukekohe Park at the end of November. Nick started racing with Waiuku Dirt Track as a 13-year-old, and continued until 2010. An avid follower of V8 Supercars, he was watching one of the events at the track with his father, and the conversation turned to Nick wanting to move from dirt track to tarmac. That move, naturally, focussed on V8s, so when the chance came to purchase the Falcon, they jumped at it - buying the car before Nick had even started as a tarmac racer! Nick says he has to give a huge vote of thanks to his current sponsors and his race crew, and adds with a laugh that he’s still looking for more sponsors if anyone’s keen.

V12 Ferrari to echo across Hampton Downs The 2014 New Zealand Festival of Motor Racing celebrating Ferrari has secured a third Formula One racer from the marque for the event which runs over two weekends next January at Hampton Downs. The car – a 1994 ex-Gerhard Berger and Jean Alesi 412T1 - has a 3.5 litre V12 normally aspirated engine, and is regarded as one of the best sounding Formula One cars of all time, though perhaps not one of the most outright successful from the Italian manufacturer.

The car will be running fast demonstration laps over both January 17-20 and January 24-26 weekends at the Ferrari Festival. It was the secondto-last of six 412T1 chassis and was used from the Canadian Grand Prix onwards. It was driven by Jean Alesi to third place at the Canadian Grand Prix, and to second place at the British Grand Prix. Team mate Gerhard Berger used it to finish second at the season-closing Australian Grand Prix on the Adelaide circuit. There’s no questioning the car’s his-

torical significance. It was the Ferrari F1 team’s second-most used chassis during the turbulent and tragic 1994 F1 season. Michael Schumacher won his first F1 title in a Benetton-Ford F1 but the entire season was overshadowed by a string of serious accidents and the deaths of Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger at the San Marino Grand Prix in May at Imola. “This will be the first public running in New Zealand of an iconic V12 Ferrari Formula One car,” explained Festival Chairman Jim Barclay.

Some great local snapper caught over recent weeks The biggest challenge to fishing is usually the wind and there’s been plenty of that but there have been enough good days for people to get out for a fish and reports coming in from the Manukau show there are still a lot of kahawai in the harbour, with enough gurnard

biting to put a little variety into the catch. There have also been some great snapper caught over the last month, I’ve heard of several catches around the 40 to 50cm range, not bad fish at all but they are few and far between. Expect hordes of small

snapper to invade the harbour anytime now. The best snapper I’ve heard of from the harbour recently was caught in late August by angler Shaun Bartlett, who was staying at Hudsons Beach. His fish weighed a little over 17lb and was caught off Kauri Point. What a great fish! Scallop season is now open at the shellfish are in reasonable condition although finding them remains challenging on this side of the harbour, the influx of red weed and mud moving over the traditional scallop beds remain a problem. Whitebaiter’s are having some success at times but I’ve yet to hear of any major catches. The coast should be really starting to pick up now, my advice is pick the right weather, head out to 60m and work your way in. From now til Christmas really is the best time of the year for snapper fishing out there. I am holding a free Catch More Fish! Seminar on

Finals Day at the Waiuku Netball Centre is always something special, but this year had something extra, as the club thanked their Draw Steward Marion O’Neil for her dedication to her sport and the club. President Tracey Phillips read an ‘Ode to Marion’, detailing her time in the sport with the Waiuku Cosmopolitan Club team, as a goal shoot, and her coaching and umpiring of the youngest teams (now called Future Ferns) over many years. Marion retired from umpiring this year, and at the end of this season will retire as Draw Steward for the centre, a position she has filled for some 19 years. As Tracey said, Marion is known for her emphasis on fairness, and her unfailingly sunny disposition. Marion has previously been the recipient of a NZ Netball service award for her efforts for the club. On behalf of the players, and the club itself, Tracey Phillips presented a gift to Marion, to warm applause and a standing ovation from the Centre committee. Then it was on to the trophy presentations, as teams and individual players were honoured after a successful season, one on which the centre fielded 72 teams, 36 junior and 36 senior. In the following pages we detail some of the action and success from the weekend.

National League event at Papakura The New Zealand Rugby League National Competition 15s tournament kicks off at Bruce Pulman Park, Papakura next Monday. Previously the National Competition 15s teams have toured with the 17s and Premier grades, but this year all seven teams are being brought together for a tournament week, which will follow a similar format to the one used so successfully at the NZRL’s National Secondary Schools tournament. GM Football and Community Dain Guttenbeil explains ”The youth grade teams in our National Competition are the first step on our elite player pathway and we want to offer them the best possible development opportunities in line with our ‘more than just a game’ philosophy. “Earlier in the year we went to the Zones and held pre-National Competition performance camps. The 15s and 17s players heard from a number of speakers and started their off-field development as well as trialling for their National Competition teams. “We’re keen to give the players every chance to play quality opposition, which is

why they used to travel, but we thought making use of the school holidays to bring them together in a tournament format would be less disruptive to their school work and more beneficial to their development at the same time. “This way they can get to meet players who they may one day play with in NZ Residents age-group teams, and they can build on the development work we started at the Zone camps.” At the tournament there will be an age appropriate ‘It’s Not OK!’ workshop, a player pathway session with the NRL / NZRL Wellbeing and Education manager Joe Harawira, as well as position specific coaching sessions. Guttenbeil says a tournament format will also help the players, along with their coaches, managers and selectors see where they sit. “Having all the players together in one place means we can more readily assess their on-field performances, and it allows the boys to not only test themselves against the best from other Zones and Districts but also to get a realistic picture of where they fit as far as their position goes.

Ebbetts get a thank you A reader wrote to compliment Ross and Kevin of Ebbetts Pukekohe. On a recent dull late winters day, the reader and her husband purchased a new Holden from Ebbetts Pukekohe and were impressed by the cars latest safety features. Unfortunately she suffers from highly sensitive eyes, and two days later as the weather improved to a full sunny afternoon, she experienced problems with light reflections from the new upmarket dashboard trims. “Ross and Kevin from Ebbetts Pukekohe went out of their way over a two week period to rectify the situation so now I can safely drive at ease,” she says.

“We know from the success of the National Performance Camp, which feeds our NZ Residents 16s and 18s programme, that once the boys see the competition for their position from around the country, the best of them will go away and work even harder to ensure they are the fullback, half back or winger chosen for representative honours.” The tournament starts on Monday September 30 and runs through until Friday October 4.

Strong finish for College hockey team The Waiuku College hockey 1st XI boys team have had a very busy competition season of 18 games, which included two separate intercity rounds, and two invitation games. The first round was played between teams from Counties and North Harbour, and the second round between teams from Counties and Midlands, Waikato. Travel to North Harbour, Hamilton and Ngatea made for some long days. The Waiuku team was a new and fairly young side consisting of players from years 9, 10, 11 and 12. The first round saw a team building start with not too many wins, but a lot of spirit and team bonding. Mid-season saw the boys play Thames Valley College in the annual, inter school clash. Waiuku was very dominate winning nine to nil. This set the team up for a good second round, and at completion Waiuku finished third overall. On Sunday, September 1, the team headed to Whanganui to part take in the National Secondary Schools Tournament week. The Waiuku team were entered into the Olympic Stick Tournament, which was made up of 12 teams from throughout New Zealand. Finishing with a silver medal at the tournament last year, the pressure was on the new side. The team stayed at the Whanganui Top 10 complex, and on arrival were very happy to discover that two College girls soccer teams were also staying in camp. Morale was up, as was the dress code and hair gel! The team started the tournament strongly on Monday morning, with a game against Glendowie College. An excellent team game saw Waiuku win 6-1. Goals were scored by, Lee Rattrie, Adam Kennedy, Blair Lovett, Sam Woods, Tim Lever and Harry Harwood. The second game on Monday at 2:20 pm, pitted them against Kelston Boys High. This game was a real test match, but an excellent team effort right to the finish, saw the win to Waiuku, 2-1. Goals were scored by Trent Thornton and Blair Lovett. One game on Tuesday against Botany Downs Secondary School, again showed a great team effort, and the win secured at 2-0. Goals were scored by Harry Harwood, and Lee Rattrie. Wednesday proved to be battle day on the turf with two very hard games. The first against Horowhenua College saw some very good hockey from both sides, with Waiuku finishing down 1-2 at full time. The afternoon game against Mahurangi was again a battle, with Waiuku unable to find the back of the goal. A very tense game ended in a nil all draw. At the end of pool play Waiuku finished Phone: 09 235 7835

second behind Horowhenua. Thursday, and semi final day saw the team pitted against the winners of the other pool, Avondale College. As with the previous day, the game was very even with both sides having their chances. Unfortunately, they could not hit the target, and went down 0-1. Friday, and the final game was played against Whakatane High School for third and fourth places. The boys lifted following the previous days disappointment, and played an excellent team game dominating in all positions. Fast running, passing, and team work gave a 2-0 win. Goals were scored by Finn Milne and Tim Lever. The final was played between Horowhenua and Avondale, with Horowhenua taking the Gold medal, 2-1. “Finishing with the bronze, in third place was an excellent result for such a young side, and on our day, we were very capable of winning the tournament,” team management said. The whole team had a fantastic tournament, and can be very proud of themselves. Selected as Most Valuable Tournament Player for Waiuku was Declan McLeish, who was a force in every game. “A huge effort both off and on the turf by all 14 players, resulted in a fantastic tournament, and one the Waiuku College, families, and the boys, can be very proud of. In the last two years, this team of fine young Waiuku men have finished Tournament week with a Silver, and a Bronze. Next year I am sure we will bring home the gold,” the manager said. “On behalf of the whole team, a very big thanks to the following people and businesses who supported us in our quest to tournament glory. “The team would like to thank their coaches Chad Whitehead and Dipesh Parag for an awesome year, and the giving of his time and talent. Also a big congratulations to Chad from the team, on his selection into the Junior Black Sticks Squad. “Big thanks also to tournament camp helpers, Shirley Kennedy, Des Woods, Colin Thornton, and Joey Griffith. Thanks to all team families, and to everyone who supported our raffles and fundraisers. To the team manager, not a bad effort either, and another year over.” The tournament team: Adam Kennedy, Trent Thornton, Sam Woods, Lee Rattrie, Tyler Forrest, Tim Lever, Declan McLeish, Carl Cresswell, Aiden Mawer, Shane Burns, Finn Milne, Harry Harwood, Blair Lovett, Stanley Simpson. Squad members who were unable to travel to tournament were A.J Type and Adam Good. Also thanks to Josh Beech who was a team member for part of the year.

Herculean effort holds Shield for another week in Counties Counties Manukau Steelers produced a herculean defensive display in the second half to repulse the challenge from neighbours Waikato 37-25 at Eco Light Stadium in Pukekohe. It was a rare victory for the Steelers over their Chiefs partners, and fitting in front of the 1993 Counties Manukau side who held a reunion over the weekend. Taking a 20-11 halftime lead into the strong wind in the second half, it was going to demand a massive defensive display from the home side. Better still when Captain Fantastic Fritz Lee charged over after a brilliant Augustine Pulu break eight minutes in, converted by Baden Kerr. Rory Grice broke back for Waikato with an excellent try and after a Kerr penalty, the visitors scored again to reduce the margin to five points with 24 minutes remaining.

Four minutes later after another splendid Steelers break, the outstanding Sherwin Stowers through a great long pass as wing Toni Pulu leapt acrobatically to nail the try with Kerr converting into the wind from the sideline. Stern defence from the home side enabled them to hold on to the 12 point buffer to give them an important victory - their second shield defence and it cemented their fourth spot in the premiership with a bonus point win. The first half was a battle between the power of the Waikato forward pack and the danger of the Steelers backs. While the opening stanza was dominated by the Waikato forwards, resulting in a try wide out to their fullback Trent Renata. The Steelers broke back after a great break on the left, with Sherwin Stowers scoring under the posts for Baden Kerr to convert.

It ignited a serious of attacks by the Steelers. After both teams shared penalties, Augustine Pulu sliced over after setting up the break with a deft pass to Simon Lemalu. The teams swapped further penalties to leave the score at 20-11 after the first 40 minutes into the strong wind for the home team. Lee and Adam Cathcart were outstanding for the home side, while the forward pack were excellent at set phase against the bigger, moreexperienced Waikato pack. In the backs August Pulu was brilliant in his final game before much needed surgery on his leg, Kerr’s kicking was the difference and Stowers was superb from fullback. Counties Manukau Steelers 37 (Sherwin Stowers, Augustine Pulu, Fritz Lee, Toni Pulu tries, Baden Kerr 4 cons, 3 pens) Waikato 25 (Trent Renata, Rory Grice, Sam Christie tries; Renata 2 cons, 2pens)
