Town Manager Report r! a e y a t a h Oh, w

Well, the silly season is definitely here and Vanessa and I are busy organising the “Music in the Park” on the 25th January from 3.00-5.00pm and “Movies in the Park” on the 7th February at 6.30pm, both events at Tamakae Reserve before we close for years end. We have had a really busy year creating the www. waiukutown.co.nz website, designing the Waiuku brochure and advertising, submissions to council, “Blast to the Past”, “Christmas Parade” and “Waiuku Steel n Wheel” events and town promotions to name a few. I hope you all managed to get down town on Saturday and enjoy the NZ Steel Ltd Christmas Parade. The weather gods were definitely smiling and Waiuku was a hype of activity. It is always great to have such a wonderful variety of creative and colourful floats and we should be proud as a community to boast we have one of the best parades in South Auckland. I can finally report that the first clean and seal of the CBD foot path works are all but completed. Once Chorus has completed their works next year they will have another clean and seal. We have been advised that the paving will get a steam clean this week to tidy them up after the huge crowds and mess created after the parade to bring them back lovely for Christmas. I am sure you will agree this has been a long time coming and they look amazing. I would like to thank the College students, Information Centre volunteers and all those people for supporting us in our petition to get this issue resolved and the Local Board and Auckland Council for allocating the money for the clean and seal. I would like to give you a heads up on what the Waiuku Business Student Advisory Board (WBSAB) have achieved this year. For many of you that are unaware, this board was

created when the WB&DA wanted to give our young students a voice on community and business issues and give them a sense of pride in their town. The group consists of 8 students’ rangeing from year 9 up to year 13. On Monday 16th December they had a meeting up at the College with Mayor Len Brown to discuss the public transport issues in the town. The meeting went really well and they put a variety of questions to the Mayor on the lack of public transport and GVR issues as well as the Manukau harbour transport possibilities involving the reopening of the Onehunga Port. They did an amazing job advocating on Waiuku’s behalf and I think the community is very lucky to have a proactive group of young people prepared to speak out and make a difference for our town. I would also like to send a huge thank you to Waiuku College for supporting this group. The Information Centre is now in the busy season offering information to visiting tourists. We are always looking for people to help out on the roster so please let me know if you would like to become part of this fantastic team of volunteers and give a couple of hours occasionally. The WB&DA would like to remind the community to think before purchasing those all-important Christmas gifts and remember to “Shop local” where at all possible. We need our businesses to survive and it is only through our support and sales that they can stay healthy. I would like to remind you all that the roundabouts are now in the final planning stages and works should be beginning early January. Due to the scale of the works this will be an approximate 16 week project. Auckland transport

with Sharlene Druyven will endeavour to make as little inconvenience as possible but please exercise patience. A copy of the plans for the works are in the information centre so please feel free to pop in and view them. I am still waiting to hear when the toilets in the Kentish carpark will be completed and open to the public. The fencing has been removed but they are yet to be opened. Please know we are working with Ngati ti Ata, Auckland Council parks and property to find a suitable design for the outer walls. We don’t feel the mint green toilets as they stand look aesthetically pleasing nor do they fit into the heritage theme of the town. On behalf of the Waiuku Business & Development Association, Vanessa and myself we would like to thank the Waiuku community for their continued support of the local businesses and the events we run throughout the year. Merry Christmas to you all and a safe and happy New Year.

Thank you to all our customers for 2013,

have a safe and happy 2014.

I have witnessed Christmas parades in four small towns about the size of Waiuku over the years and have never seen one better than that on Saturday. The organisers and the participants can be justly proud of the parts they played and I’m sure the children in particular must have been thrilled. Bravo Waiuku! Jack McIndoe Waiuku

A Waiuku man dropped into our offices on Monday after the Waiuku Christmas parade to suggest we give our Wow Award this week to someone he know’s only as Jan. He was taking photos and video of the parade when he left a bag containing his wallet and various other things on the ground outside the Supervalue Store., thinking some friends were looking after it. Later in the day he realised his friends didn’t have it, and returned to find it missing. Thinking it had been stolen, he got home later to find the bag on his doorstep with a note asking whether it was his, and if not, to drop it into the police station. Jan had got his details from his wallet, and dropped it off. We think that’s a wow too.

Water safety is an lives important part of ken and needs to be ta seriously

Summer is here and that means sun, sand and of course safe swimming. Being near the water is such a huge part of a Kiwi summer and we here at SwimMagic want to ensure that everyone is safe whether they’re at the beach, the river, in the pool or in the boat. Our main message for the summer is to actively supervise children near water. This means being within arms reach at all times. Water safety and swimming abilities really come to the fore in the hotter months therefore we are working harder than ever to spread the water safety message to as many children and their families. By organizing visits with our water safety representative Kori the little blue penguin we are hoping to get the word out to always wear a lifejacket, swim between the flags and always swim where an adult can see. SwimMagic is New Zealand’s leading swimming education provider delivering lessons and water safety programs for all ages and abilities throughout the country. From everyone at SwimMagic Franklin we wish you a happy and safe holiday season.

Being SunSmart in New Zealand is crucial. The unique environment makes the population particularly vulnerable to damaging ultraviolet rays. There are clear skies and the closeness to the sun. Add to these the outdoor lifestyle of Kiwis and some very fair skins, and you have the following facts: • • • •

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in this country. New Zealand has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. There are nearly 50,000 new skin cancers a year, including 1800 new cases of melanoma. There are over 300 deaths from skin cancer annually.

Look after your skin this summer and remember:

Pukekohe Market Franklin Market in Pukekohe has been running for 12 years. It is located in the public carpark on Massey Avenue. Open every Saturday morning come sun, hail or shine! 8am til noon. It is a general market selling fresh fruit and veg (mostly locally-grown), fresh fish, bacon, fresh beef, cheeses, milk, yoghurt and cream, eggs, honey, jams, CDs, toys, jewellery, clothing, books, tools, carboot and much, much more.

Next year’s Auckland Lantern Festival is set to be the biggest and brightest yet, with entertainment and celebrations spread across two sites and four nights. As well as the spectacular illuminations, on-stage performances, traditional festivities and feasting at Albert Park, a full programme will now also take place on Queens Wharf on the evenings of Friday 14 to Sunday 16 February. Outdoor movies, a contemporary sand painting artist and kids craft activities will create a laid-back encounter with Chinese culture on Auckland’s waterfront. Other highlights include a ‘lantern-only’ night at Albert Park on Thursday 13 February, where the magical hand-made creations can be enjoyed in a more relaxed environment, and the spectacular fireworks finale on Sunday night.

West

The west coast is still fishing well and snapper are starting to move to shallower water, this makes them harder to find so it’s a matter of working your way out til you find them. Thirty to forty five metres is the depth I would expect them to be. Be prepared to move around though as kahawai and sharks can be a problem. Albacore and skipjack tuna have turned up and can be found from 60m deep and further out, most successful anglers are likely to be towing lures around the current lines. The water is warming up and is over 20 degrees so the striped marlin won’t be far away, at the time of writing none have been caught but I wouldn’t be surprised if the first one hasn’t showed up by the time you’re reading this! The harbour is fishing well with some good snapper in amongst the little ones. It can be very hard to get away from the small fish but it isn’t impossible, just be prepared to move. Gurnard and kahawai are still around in numbers. Kingfish are also making a strong showing and I recently saw a pic of a 33lb kingfish that was caught by a couple dragging a net for flounder. There have been plenty of other good kings seen or caught also. Scallops are still in good condition but typically they start to lose that condition as the summer kicks in. The red weed that can plague the harbor is making a comeback too which won’t help matters. Coastguard are running a bar crossing day on January 19, this will be based at Te Toro and I recommend that anyone wishing to cross either the harbor or river bars attend this course. Details are available from Waiuku Search and Rescue. Take care over the holiday time and I hope to see you out there, Smudge.

The West Coast has been fishing extremely well for snapper, fish are plentiful in depths between 50 and 60m. It doesn’t seem to matter too much where you stop, the fishing has been spectacular. Sharks haven’t been too much of a problem but you can usually count on the odd one to try and spoil your day. While mullet has always been the bait of choice for most west coast fishermen, snapper are taking almost anything you drop in front of them. Although there have been a few very big snapper caught, most fish tend to be in the two to four kg range, perfect eaters! Limit catches are generally easy and many anglers are choosing a self imposed limit of 40cm or so. Enviro News

Welcome to Issue 37 of Enviro News, our Awhitu Peninsula Landcare newsletter. As we enjoy the outdoors this summer, please be kind to the precious environment that surrounds us and gives us life. Our country is blessed with incredible natural values, but much is under

threat - especially our waterways and every action we take, however small, is important. Many hands really do make a difference. Warm wishes for your holiday season from Awhitu Landcare, and grateful thanks to all who have fostered environmental care this year.

Awhitu Peninsula Landcare Inc

Possum Control project extends

Gentle giant needs our protection Our native wood pigeon or Kereru is one of our most loved birds, appearing so gentle and trusting. The Kereru has an important job helping the spread of native trees. Since the moa became extinct the native pigeon is the only seed disperser with a beak big enough to swallow large fruit, such as those of karaka, tawa and taraire. Long-lived birds, Kereru breed slowly. Key breeding signals are spectacular flight displays performed mainly by territorial males in early summer. Nest-making is not one of this bird’s greatest skills! They throw together a flimsy nest of twigs and lay a single egg, which takes 28 days to hatch. Both parents take turns to sit on the egg. The chick grows rapidly, leaving the nest when about 40 days old. It is fed a protein-rich milky secretion from the walls of

the parents’ crops, mixed with fruit pulp. When much fruit is available, some pairs of Kereru will have a large chick in one nest and be incubating an egg in another nearby. Fledglings spend at least two weeks with their parents before becoming independent. Unfortunately, due to slow breeding, predators and accidents, Kereru numbers are not increasing as much as we would like. Possums and rats love eggs and chicks, and many Kereru are injured or killed each year by flying into windows. You can help these lovely birds by vigilant pest control, using cat collars, and by putting reflective decals on your windows (available from: http://www.projectkereru. org.nz). Below: Kereru feeding its chick a ‘fruit smoothie.’ Courtesy Nga Manu Images.

It has been a full-on year for the Awhitu Peninsula possum control team as they work to keep pest numbers low. Our possum control project started in 2007, with contractors setting up bait stations over much of the peninsula, working to clear out possum populations from top to bottom. This concentrated effort resulted in an ideal - below 3% - population count (down from 20%!). Inevitably, over the years, numbers have crept up, particularly in rugged, difficult-to-access areas. Research proves that possum numbers need to be at or below 3%, with accompanying rodent control, to allow successful breeding for our native birds such as tui and kereru. (The brodifacoum bait used to fill stations has the useful side effect of keeping rat numbers down.) Our aim is to clear out possum population ‘hotspots’, keeping our peninsula full of tui song and swooping kereru. It takes concentrated, and ongoing, effort. We have been able to enlist local contractors for both ends of the peninsula, with Neil Bray of Summit Pest Control taking over the southern

Sand Dunes are life savers Sand dunes protect coastal communities from coastal erosion and flooding, and nurture both plant and animal life. Dunes are formed when dry sand is blown up the beach and trapped by native sand binding plants. The plants then grow through the trapped sand, increasing the height of the dune and becoming a natural barrier between land and sea. The greater the width of the dunes, the greater the reservoir of sand available to provide protection from storm waves. Any activity that damages these important sand binding plants can stop dunes from rebuilding and can lead to increased erosion. Unfortunately, vehicles are causing increasing damage to coastal dunes, endangering nesting shore birds, and creating safety concerns for other beach users.

This vehicular destruction can happen in just a few hours compared to the many years dunes take to build up naturally. Vehicles also compact the sand, changing the conditions needed for sand binding grasses to grow. The loss of plant cover, as well as the physical changes to the sands, makes dunes more

vulnerable to wind erosion and ‘blow-outs’ - where the dune gives way and sand is blown inland. We urge visitors over summer to respect the beach, the fragile dune environment, the animals living there, and other beachgoers. Below: Protective dunes are easily destroyed by vehicles

barrier baitline, after Peter Nichol’s retirement. In rugged country at the top end of the Peninsula, where ‘hotspots’ have been identified, Peter Shepherd has been busy improving baitlines, filling bait stations and running the feratox (cyanide) drops which pick up any bait-shy pest stragglers. The feratox operations are run with great precision and care - all residents in treatment zones are contacted and the considerable accompanying paperwork completed and approved by necessary authorities prior to commencement. An independent contractor runs regular tests to establish the success of the programme. As always, the many locals who set Timms traps, fill bait stations, and notify us of pest sightings are vital to ongoing success. If there is an area where possums are allowed to flourish, they soon spread out, infecting ‘clean’ areas. We endeavour to keep good supplies of free bait, bait stations, and traps available – contact us if you need any or all of these. Pictured above: a possum devours a kereru egg. Unitary Plan to Stop Tree Harvesting? Approximately one third of the Awhitu Peninsula has been designated an area of Outstanding Natural Landscape (ONL) - and we can all agree it is a pretty special place with ruggedly scenic hills and amazing views to the wild coastlines. As an area of ONL however, landowners are subject to many restrictions on their permitted activities that could have serious implications for farming their land. One restriction is on the amount of forestry planting for harvesting that is allowed - limited to only 2 hectares per property before a resource consent is required. This provision limits even the planting of ‘timber’ trees - without defining the species involved - does it include Kauri? Rimu? Totara? The steep hills of the peninsula may be scenic but they are also erosion prone and many would consider them to be prime can-

didates for retirement from grazing. Some forestry may be the best solution for this land and this could then provide an income that enables farmers to carry out more environmental work. It is also provides for massive amounts of carbon sequestration - something essential for future climate change mitigation. Whilst no-one wants to see our neighbourhood become another Woodhill forest, maybe the Council should consider this repressive restriction more closely? If you have an opinion on these matters make your voice heard - it will be many years before change is possible once proposals become final. The Auckland Council Unitary Plan is open for submissions to 28 February so if you want to have a say on the rules we will soon have to abide by - get your skates on! Labours of love

Our Labour Weekend walks are always popular occasions, and this year was no exception. David Craig and daughter Charlotte led a group of more than 50 walkers across their Puketapu property. Compared to last year, when a howling gale and driving rain assailed us, this time it was warm and summery with coats being shed and sunglasses donned. This allowed us to enjoy stunning views, admire ancient native trees and linger beside a

Council keen to assist environmental initiatives Last month the Awhitu Peninsula was host to two teams from Auckland Council, who came to learn more about the area, and ask the community how Council could assist local environmental initiatives. Teams from Biodiversity (fostering the variety of life) and Biosecurity (protection against pests) met with representatives from local community groups and individuals concerned with environmental issues. Council were keen to em-

phasise to workshop attendees that they are there to help; that they have a great deal of expertise available, and they would like to assist in ways which the community wants. Not dictating, but supporting. It was a very positive day. For many this was their first experience of the Peninsula but all agreed it wouldn’t be their last. Below: Workshop attendees visited the Awhitu Landcare native plant nursery.

tranquil waterfall in the cool shade of regenerating bush blocks that have been behind protective fences for many years now. Puketapu Estate is one of the most historic on the peninsula and David gave us an insight into the lives of his early settler ancestors. The sites of the old estate homestead were observed and we wandered down part of the original old road that was used to transport goods to the harbour.

The hard work that David and his family have put in over the years is certainly coming to fruition but they are not content to rest on their laurels. This year alone, thousands more plants have gone into a new wetland area and we look forward to a return visit in years to come to see its progress. When it comes to surveys that rank the ‘Best Cities in the World’, Auckland seems to be a regular feature in the top five. Sadly we also punch above our weight in another category - Weediest Cities of the world - top of the list. Whilst many of weeds go unnoticed, there are some that can’t be ignored. Woolly nightshade is now so prevalent in our region that it could displace pohutukawa as the Auckland Council logo. Hailing from South America, this easily identifiable, invasive plant is covered with downy hair that can irritate the skin, eyes and nose and lead to allergic reactions. Although its yellow berries are poisonous to humans and stock, they are highly attractive to birds who then spread the seed far and wide. This seed can last in the soil for up to 30 years before germinating and forming dense stands that shade out native seedlings. As well as being fast growing (2m in a year), they also secrete a substance that actually stops other plants from growing around them - these unwanted aliens are truly nasty.

Control Options: • Small plants and seedlings pull out easily - destroy, they easily regrow • Cut and paste - larger plants can be cut and the stems immediately painted with herbicide such as picloram gel (Vigilant) or metsulfuron (Escort) • For larger stands you may have to resort to overall spraying with herbicide such as metsulfuron with penetrant (Pulse) or Tordon Brushkiller • Follow manufacturers’ recommendations - check yearly to catch newly germinated seedlings. Woolly nightshade is identified by Auckland Council as a containment pest plant which means that landowners / occupiers are required to control the weed at least 20m from their boundaries. If you have a serious flannelweed problem in your area, contact Auckland Council Biosecurity officers for assistance. Inset: Council weed management policy states landowners must control woolly nightshade at least 20m within their boundaries.

A Christmas light for Tane Mahuta? The Awhitu Peninsula is rightly recognised as being an enormously valuable area of Auckland when it comes to the natural environment - we share our space with over 40 rare or endangered species. Sadly, we are one of the few areas that has been affected by the dreaded Kauri Dieback disease. Once infected by this pathogen, Phytophthora taxon Agathis (PTA), our mighty lords of the forest quickly succumb and there is only one outcome death.

Or rather, that used to be the case - now, a treatment for individual trees is giving promising results in initial trials. This bright light comes in the form of injections of phosphite into trunks of infected trees. These have been trialled by Plant and Food Research at sites in Waitakere and Northland and have been found to halt the disease. It is not yet known how effective the treatment will be in the long term or how frequently it will have to be applied but it brings hope where once

there was only a death sentence. It maybe some time before the treatment can be rolled out, so right now the only effective response we have to this killer disease is prevention. Many may be planning activities over the holiday period in areas containing Kauri which could be infected or susceptible to infection. The Coromandel, Hunua and many other areas are still free of this disease so let’s keep it that way. • Keep to defined tracks - away from the

roots of kauri trees • Clean and disinfect footwear thoroughly - both before and after leaving any area containing Kauri - 0.5g of soil is enough to spread the pathogen • Steam clean your mountain bike / trail bike • Keep dogs on a leash - they also spread PTA spores on their feet • If there is a Kauri Dieback Cleaning Station then USE IT - up to 80% of visitors to Waitakeres walk past them.
