Waiuku’s world-famous proposal People driving along Waiuku’s Queen Street on Wednesday afternoon may have wondered what a trio of Fijian musicians, a media contingent and a group of waiters with champagne were doing hiding behind some bushes in a suburban driveway. The answer was they were about to announce that locals Aveael Webb and Murray Armstrong were about to find out they had won an international competition for the wedding of their dreams at romantic Turtle Island Resort Fiji on Valentine’s Day. Despite facing tough competition from seven American couples and two Australian couples, the Waiuku pair emphatically won the coveted prize worth $26,000. Their last minute entry to the competition received massive support from New Zealanders, with Aveael and Murray beating their nearest rival by more than 3000 votes during the 60 hour voting period. The couple entered the video re-enactment of their engagement only days before the competition closed on January 7 and received huge support from the nation. Competition organisers say they were stunned to find that the winning couple hailed from New Zealand. “When you compare the population base of New Zealand to that of the USA or even Australia, we never dreamed a Kiwi couple would win.

“Aveael and Murray weren’t the only couple to get media support and promotion either, but clearly New Zealand got behind them 100 percent... it was amazing to see,” said Matt Buchan, Director of Marketing and Sales for Turtle Island Resort Fiji. “It was a great surprise for us and we wanted it to be a great surprise for them too, which is why we flew to New Zealand to let them know today, together with a taste of the friendly Fijian hospitality they can expect in Fiji on their special day.” More than 60 couples entered the competition and thousands of people around the world voted for their favourite video. Engaged in July last year, Aveael and Murray have won airfares for two to Fiji, seaplane transfers to Turtle Island Resort, seven nights’ accommodation in one of the island’s 14 grand beachfront bures, all activities, meals and beverages and, of course, their wedding ceremony, photographer, wedding feast and celebration. The prize is particularly exciting for Aveael who has dreamed of going to Turtle Island for as long as she can remember. The couple’s entry said: “We don’t have a sympathy story or anything like that, we are just a genuine hardworking Kiwi couple and we would always help anyone who needed help without a second thought, and it would just be nice if something like that happened

to people like us.” Turtle Island Resort Fiji is the ultimate in private luxury wedding destinations. The island only ever hosts 14 couples to ensure that each couple has to themselves one of the 14 private beaches that border the famous Blue Lagoon. Island staff members will take care of the whole event for Aveael and Murray - from traditional Fijian wedding attire, the celebration feast and wedding cake - all the couple will need to do is relax and enjoy the romance of Turtle Island Resort Fiji. More pics, page 9.

…and it gets better! Just as the Post was finishing this issue, Aveael popped in to let us know the Turtle Island team had just come up with a package to allow them to take two groomsmen, two bridesmaids, and Murray’s parents to the island for the wedding, putting together a special airfares package to allow some friends and family to attend the dream wedding. A reception will be held on their return, and Aveael says her and Murray wish to thank, once again, all those who voted for, and supported them, as they beat out the world for their stunning prize.

Saturday afternoon saw brilliant sunshine, a great crowd, and some excellent music, as the local community got together for Music in the Park, an event hosted at Waiuku’s Tamakae Reserve, and put on by Auckland Council as part of a region-wide programme. Discussions with council representatives over recent years have indicated the frequency and scale of events in the region can depend on the amount of people that turn up to them. Friday, February 7, from 6.30pm, sees the first time the Council’s Movies in the Park programme is being brought to Waiuku. The Waiuku Business and Development Association have got involved with the day as well, and plans are being developed to make the evening into an ‘Americana’ themed event with, all going well, hot dogs and coffees, live music, costumed actors, and a host of fun for the family leading up to the 8.30 (approx) commencement of the movie ‘Grease’. Besides being a fun evening, it’s a chance for the township to stake its claim as being worthy of similar events in the future. Seeya there! • Still on the council theme, Mayor Len Brown has scheduled a ‘Mayor in the Chair’ session at the Pukekohe Library from 1pm on Friday. This event has been postponed twice amid some of the political dramas of the last few months, and is a chance for locals to ask some questions of the mayor as submissions close on the Unitary Plan and the 2014 annual plan. The mayor has been under fire from some quarters for avoiding the public earlier in the New Year, so Friday’s chair session appears likely to attract wider media interest, and marks the first time he has resumed the ‘Mayor in the Chair’ for some months.

Correction to letter last week - there’s still time! Last week’s Post carried a letter from Ted Kitching, asking local residents to get involved and make a submission to be able to express their views over the Auckland Unitary Plan. Unfortunately, a typing error in our office meant we listed the closing date for submis-

sions as February 2, when in fact it is February 28. Ted points out that there are still a few weeks for people to obtain the submission forms from the council offices and give their views on the plan and what they would like to see in their region. -Editor

Toilet block a ‘sore thumb’ Re: The new toilet block: Was this the best design from the Bureaucrats in our Auckland City Design Office? We may be a small country town, but surely we deserve better than this! (The old toilet block was aesthetically better than this and not like a “sore thumb.”)The new building does not ‘blend in with the environment..... by design, colour or materials. (I realise this is a case of, “after the horse has bolted” kind of situation....but why didn’t Waiuku have a competition for the design, seeing it had to be built in such a prominent location? I think our ‘budding designers’ in Waiuku College’s Art class would have better ideas.) I did not notice local contractors at the

worksite during construction....and have you noticed how long it has taken these “builders” to construct this toilet block? And it is still not open! Given the type of building and design, this should have been a pretty rapid development. Once the foundations were ready, then the tilt/slab construction of the sides, it only needed the terrible roof to go on. I hope we are not also paying for the ‘time’ it has taken. In my opinion, this is an absolute eyesore....a disgrace for our town....and we are supposed to be making progress....not regressing! Tom Bright Waiuku

By Sergeant Simon Palmer This month we have already had over 120 incidents. Of course some of these are because of people drinking too much and behaving like baboons on heat, and some are purely as a result of the security message not getting through. Remember the following: • Look at your locks, window fasteners and deadbolts. • Improve the security around your sheds and garages. • Install a couple of sensor lights. • Consider an audio burglar alarm. • Get to know your neighbours and consider a support group. These include cell phones and eating food when driving. Children are another distraction, especially when the one in the middle is hitting the other two with a shoe. Although children are harder to get rid of, I know I have tried! They keep coming back, just like that stray cat that you keep feeding. However there are always ways of minimising any distractions to make it safer for everyone. The worst one I have had is when people know that you are driving, but still ring you. Firstly don’t ring it, secondly, don’t answer it. I was down at the beach the other day with Constable Borrell. We counted 12 burnouts taking place by one vehicle.

It was impounded, and the 21 year old driver arrested. Not the first time either. He was over the drink drive limit, 1153 he blew. The legal limit is 400. On active charges for doing burnouts, doing burnouts again, and on top of that, nearly three times over the drink drive limit. His fourth time as well. I think in future I will leave the impounded vehicles at the beach, and then the owner can see what damage the salt water can do to a car! Waiuku Police arrested two people at an address on Factory Road last week. The female has already pleaded guilty to cultivating cannabis. As I said last time if there is an offender present, or has just left, then this is the time to ring 111. It could be a prowler, someone breaking signs, into cars, houses, assaulting someone or having an argument with someone. Police could be just around the corner, and is the quickest way to get Police attendance. Ringing the Waiuku station, although we have an answer machine, does not guarantee us here at the station of being informed about an incident in an expedient manner. If in doubt ring 111, it can always be scaled down. Police may not immediately turn up, or may receive the call and make further enquiries. However it is still important to phone the Police. Receiving 6 calls about the same incident, may well emphasis the issue, rather than one solitary call. Everything is taken seriously and I do not want people to think that they can’t ring the Police as they have a perception that we don’t come. Everything is recorded and forms part of future Police resource deployment into certain areas. So keep the calls coming. Remember that the phone number for Crimestoppers is 0800 555 111 or www. crimestoppers-nz.org. Use this if you want your information to be anonymous. That’s all for this week, once again from the team here in Waiuku: Lorraine, Aaron, Greg, Toby and Rod, thanks for all your help, we rely on your information to make our job easier, and Waiuku a safer place to live, play and work in.

No light side to town centre vandalism Waiuku Town Centre Manager Sharlene Druyven says local businesses and the Waiuku Business and Development Association have had a gutsful of vandals damaging property in the town centre. Last week, the Christmas lights which have been erected around the township were removed after continual damage in recent weeks, damage which will cost well over $1000 to repair after sections of

the lights were torn down from awnings. Some have been deliberately cut in half. The attacks are just part of a series of incidents which seem to centre on a group of youths who have congregated in the town centre over the holiday break. Sharlene says some of the youths have been seen damaging local shops, tipping over rubbish bins, climbing onto local premises, and abusing business owners and managers. CCTV cameras placed to capture some of the offenders in the River Lane area have been stolen or damaged. Despite signs saying skateboards and scooters are banned from

the town centre, some of the youngsters are speeding around the plaza area, intimidating shoppers, and there are concerns that someone will be seriously hurt in a collision with some of them. Sharlene says she, and others, have been verbally abused when the youths are spoken to, and says parents of local youngsters need to understand that the skateboards and scooters can be confiscated by local police. “It’s getting beyond a joke,” Sharlene says. “If anyone sees this kind of behaviour, and if it is safe to do so, we encourage people to take photographs and pass them onto local police.”

Brown & Brown fixing Town...

16 weeks, two roundabouts Work has commenced on a major roading project in Waiuku which, in a few months, will see two new roundabouts controlling access from Queen Street and Constable Road to the King Street bypass area. Last week Transfield Services started milling the road surface and closed lower Queen Street, catching some business owners and local residents by surprise as there was little official warning of the road closures. Initial plans to close the street at the clock tower were changed to allow delivery trucks access to businesses lower down the street. The overall project will include two roundabouts, a raingarden, new pedestrian facilities, and is expected to link with the recently-

build toilet block to provide access. The work will be done during daylight hours, Monday to Saturday, and is being done in three stages. First, Queen Street will be closed, and half the roundabout completed, then Constable will be closed, and finally the estuary side of King Street will be closed while the project is completed. It is expected that two-way traffic will continue on King Street for the duration of the project. Local residents are asked to be aware of the changes, and a Transfield spokesperson said they trust the benefits of the improved road conditions will outweigh the inconvenience during the project. Finding alternative routes at peak times would be useful.

Museum readies for more visitors

Waiuku Museum has made a good start to the New Year with an increased number of visitors over the holiday period. Museum secretary Helen Reardon says the committee is planning to promote the museum and other Waiuku attractions to clubs, organisations and retirement homes in the Auckland and Waikato regions. “We intend to send information to a wide variety of organisations in an attempt to get more visitors to Waiuku,” she says. “We will invite them to visit the museum but also suggest other places to visit.” The museum is open on Saturdays and Sundays as well as Wednesday mornings but will open at any other time when requested. Several Auckland groups have already booked dates for early this year.

A typical visit was made by the Auckland Daimler Owners Society when 24 members visited Waiuku on Sunday January 19. They had made an early start from Auckland and drove to the Manukau Heads lighthouse before having a picnic lunch at Awhitu. After visiting Hudson’s Beach and the Waipipi Bird Park they stopped in at the

museum late in the afternoon. President of the Daimler club, Bryan Davis, said they had a very interesting day. “There is plenty to see and do in your area. We will definitely be back.” Below: Auckland Daimler enthusiasts Bryan Davis and Martin Walker were among the party of 24 which visited Waiuku recently.

Council warns over DIY efforts Local residents planning to engage in DIY work this summer are being reminded to check the rules in advance to make sure their project doesn’t cause them any problems down the track. Auckland Council Building Control Manager Tim Weight says well before people get their tools out they should check if the planned DIY work needs either building or resource consent and what the relevant legislation is. “In the summer months, we know many Aucklanders like to DIY around their homes it’s part of Kiwi culture. We’re just reminding people to make sure their project is compli-

ant,” says Mr Weight. Aucklanders can check their local requirements by calling the council and asking to speak to a duty planner or by visiting one of the council offices. Building a fence or retaining wall may still need a resource consent approval even is a building consent may not be required. “A lot of work does require consent under legislation, district or regional plans so it’s really important to check with us first, and remember even if consent is not required DIY work must still comply with the Building Act, the building code and other relevant legislation,” says Mr Weight.

The event, in conjunction with the Glenbrook Vintage Railway’s steam trips to the township’s Victoria Avenue station, was a huge success.

She was distributing fliers asking people to note suspicious behaviour and call 111 for emergencies, or the Crime Reporting Line 0800 69 77 76 for non-urgent information.

Pharmacy change, but business as usual The location of 40 Queen Street, Waiuku, the site of Amcal Waiuku Pharmacy has been a pharmacy for a long time with various owners. In 1982 Graham and Patricia Smith purchased the pharmacy and operated it until 2006 when it became Amcal Waiuku Pharmacy. But well before that, in November 1968 a new young pharmacist, Don Barker, opened a pharmacy around the corner at 10 Kitchener Road, opposite the old New World site. Don ran a successful business and was one of the first pharmacists in New Zealand to adopt

the then-new Amcal Franchise. Don, through his involvement in the community, raised the Amcal profile in Waiuku and surrounding districts for many years and retired in 2005. Kevin Daly, a pharmacist working for Don Barker, and his wife Raewyn, a local kindergarten teacher, took on the Amcal partnership. Soon after, they purchased the other pharmacy in town, of Graham and Patricia Smith, and what was then Amcal Waiuku Pharmacy moved around the corner to its present site of 40 Queen Street. Amcal Waiuku pharmacy has

operated for the past eight years at that site, serving the community of Waiuku with medical advice, products and toiletries. Kevin and his staff enjoy working with the people of Waiuku and will continue to do so into the future. But the Amcal name is to be retired nationwide and so Amcal Waiuku Pharmacy is to change to Unichem Waiuku pharmacy at the end of next week. As Kevin says, this is a name change only. Kevin and his staff remain at 40 Queen Street and, as he says, “it’s business as usual!”

It made its first appearance outside the Waiuku Information Centre at Christmas last year, and a 9-metre high Santa is set to be a regular feature of the town’s festive season after being donated to the town. Joanne Padlie donated the giant inflatable in her late husband Ivan’s name, because, as she says, he “had such a big heart and liked to make people happy and this way it will stay in the town he had adopted.” The story behind the monster Santa is that Joanne started putting up a few Christmas lights in 2003, and met Ivan in 2004, while he was living in Tauranga. He got a job in Manukau, and joined Joanne in Waiuku a year later, and soon the couple were adding more and more lights to their Christmas display. “Soon our house was ablaze with lights in all shapes and sizes, and we’d delight in watching people come up the street to look at our house,” Joanne says. Joanne and Ivan married in September 2007. By the middle of November each year Ivan would get out the Christmas lights and go through them meticulously, checking and fixing each bulb if it was out. He was scared of heights, but climbed the roof anyway to put lights up! He bought the big Santa from a roadside stall in Manukau in 2009. Joanne says he was so excited when he

came home with it. “People came from streets away to see what it was, because they could see it from their house. Ivan loved talking to people that came to look at our lights and loved the whole Christmas spirit. Sadly, the Santa was only

on display once, because he passed away in August 2010. Now, however, the Santa can delight new generations of locals, and is expected to become a feature attraction of Waiuku’s festive season. Below: Ivan Padlie with the giant Santa in 2009.

A great crowd gathered at Waiuku’s Tamakae Reserve on Saturday afternoon for Music in the Park, and next Friday evening (February 7), an even bigger crowd is expected to join the live entertainment and an outdoor showing of the movie Grease at the same venue. This free event is part of Auckland Council’s Movies in Parks summer festival which shows 18 movies across Auckland until 22 March. The event begins at 6.30pm and runs to around 10pm (movie starts at 8.30 pm ap-

proximately), and along with the movie itself is expected to be live entertainment, food and drink stalls, and actors in costumes of the era. Pictured above and inset is some of the early crowd that gathered in the sunshine on Saturday afternoon to dance to the tunes of Fever Swing and the Sisters of Swing (a group featuring the music and styling of the Andrews Sisters). Participants at the Friday movie event are encouraged to dress in the style of the movie and make a true family event of the evening.

High tide warning this week Exceptionally high king tides are forecast for the Manukau and Waitemata harbours later this week, and the NZ Transport Agency advises drivers that there is a risk some low lying sections of the city’s motorway network may flood. In the Waitemata harbour, high tides of up to 3.7m - about 0.6m higher than normal – are expected for five days from this Friday until the following Tuesday (31 January – 4 February). King tides usually occur over a period of two days and peak at 3.6m. Areas most at risk from flooding include a section of highway and adjoining cycleway on the Northwestern Motorway (State Highway 16) causeway between Great North and Rosebank Roads, and the Northern Motor-

way (SH1) near the Onewa Road interchange. In the city, some parts of Tamaki Drive could also flood. The king tides will be at their highest on Saturday and Sunday mornings says the Transport Agency’s National Journey Manager, Kathryn Musgrave. “Our advice to all road users, including cyclists and walkers, is to take extra care – especially during that hour-and-a-half either side of high tide. If necessary, we will divert drivers on to other roads to allow them to continue their journeys safely” says Mrs Musgrave. The king, or perigean, tides occur when the moon is either new or full and closest to the earth. The weather an also influence the height of the tide.

“New Zealand saved my life”

Above: Tony Nelson is ready for the Sand to Mud fun run in April after a dedicated training programme which he says has saved his life. Inset: Tony in 2011. When the runners line up for the Sand to Mud Fun Run from Karioitahi Beach in April, one of those on the start line will be achieving more than just surviving the trek from the sand to the Waiuku township. For schoolteacher Tony Nelson, the start gun will mark one of the final stages in a quest which has seen him lose almost 100kg in the past few years, regain his health, avoid knee surgery and, he believes, has saved his life. The former US Navy IT technician says he used to enjoy running, but his weight ballooned in desk-bound jobs, and he lost the motivation to get fitter. Steadily, his health declined, and when he travelled from the States in 2006 he was close to 200kg. Training as a teacher, then working at Sandspit Road School, Tony says he tried a number of times to lose weight, but it was only in the past year, working with a personal trainer at Waiuku’s The Jym, that he ‘hardened up’ and got into it. He says he had a ‘pretty frank’ discussion with his doctor, who told him he was facing knee surgery and treatment for diabetes is he didn’t do something fairly drastic. He set the goal of running the Sand to Mud in 2014, and with the support of the staff and patrons of The Jym, he says he has been motivated to make the changes. He reckons if he had stayed in the United States, he doubts he would have been able to

change his lifestyle to the extent that he has. “Coming to New Zealand saved my life,” he says simply. Talking with Tony outside The Jym in the New Zealand sun, it’s hard to believe that just a few years ago he needed a cane to get around school camps, and was struggling for his balance. Now, with the help of personal trainer Jamie Baker and the Jym crew, Tony is running three days a week, and doing Jym training on three other days. He’s aiming to crack the one-hour mark for the Sand to Mud, and has his sights set on a Masters body-building competition later in the year. “The support, encouragement and love from the community has been simply outstanding,” he says. “My students, (he now works at James Cook High), have also been a great support, noticing the difference even if it’s just from a couple of weeks.” He’s working through a combination of endurance training, interval and speed sessions, and muscle strengthening and flexibility exercises. He says he has managed to put off knee surgery now for probably another 10 years, and is off the diabetic watch list, with his readings in normal range. “I have to thank the local community so much for their support. New Zealand, and Waiuku, have been wonderful.”

The Franklin Arts Centre hosts a retrospective display of now-locally-based New Zealand artist Jon Tootlill, which commences from 11am on February 1. Born in the Waikato,Jon Tootill (Kai Tahu) now resides in Karaka. Tootill studied in Auckland and began his art career in the 1970s, later working in advertising, and now painting full time This exhibition showcases five key series of works made over the last decade. The paintings feature traditional Maori tattoos (ta moko), modernist inspired geometry and mid-century suburban homes. Together these works create a highly personal

Papakura hosts special show The first exhibition for 2014 will soon be on display at the Papakura Art Gallery. Liyen Chong’s first ever survey exhibition “Dreams, Circles, Moons, Fictions (and fragments found on the forest floor of disquietude)” will show from Saturday 1 February until Saturday 15 March at the council-run facility.

This survey exhibition is a retrospective that samples different bodies of work from different periods of Chong’s practice since she graduated from Elam in 2001. The concept brings together a mixture of cultural experiences and explores the idea of displacement amongst migrants.

Fun, friendship or fitness - get involved! Becoming a member of a social or sports club in and around the Franklin area holds numerous benefits. The most obvious of these is that it is an arena in which to make new friends. Some people find that meeting new people can be difficult when they tend to frequent the same pubs and clubs and interact with the same group of people. Social clubs can help with this problem as they provide a relaxed environment full of others who are equally as eager to form new acquaintances. This can also be a great way to make new friends if you have recently relocated to the area. Sports clubs cater for practically every sport imaginable in Franklin, whether it be traditional winter sports, or indoor sports and fitness groups which provide an outlet for health without having to battle the inclement weather of the mid-year period.

Most social clubs have a focus on event nights and group activities, meaning they are also a great way to learn a new hobby. Traditional social club nights include sporting activities, fashion nights, trivia, getaways, comedy, live music and dinners. There is something for almost everybody and events are arranged for you, meaning that you can avoid any organisational stress – all you have to do is show up. For those of you with a flair for organisation, or a desire to help out in the community, many local service clubs offer a chance to not only meet new people, but also benefit your local area. Belonging to a social club normally comes with membership benefits such a discounts at local bars and restaurants. You will also be introduced to new things and it can be a great way to leave your comfort zone. If you have a busy lifestyle, a social club can be a great way to let off some steam during the stressful working week.

Local dairy farmer Jason Dickey put on a stunning display of dirt bike riding when he won the popular big annual Raglan Rocx crosscountry endurance race near Raglan earlier this month. It was particularly satisfying for the Kawasaki ace because this is one of those ‘must-do’, high-profile events on the New Zealand off-road motorcycling calendar, and a massive achievement to win against such top-class opposition. Instead of forming a two-rider team as he did last season, national cross-country No.2 Dickey raced as an ironman contestant this time around and it seemed to pay off as he roared to a convincing eightminute win over his nearest rival, the man who is again expected to be Dickey’s nemesis for the nationals, New Zealand cross-country champion Adrian Smith. Mokau’s Smith, again riding solo, won this event last year, but he had to bow to Dickey. Third overall was the two-man team of Rotorua’s Scott Birch and Hamilton’s Andrew Charleston, while another two-man combina-

New website for learners Watch out, kids about!

In an effort to reduce the number of automobile accidents involving teen drivers, Theory Test.co.nz, a free website for New Zealand teens to prepare for the written portion of their theory test, recently announced the launch of its website. Injuries related to automobile accidents are the leading cause of death in children, age 10-19. In fact, more than 260,000 teen deaths each year are caused by auto accidents, according to the World Health Organization. Of those crashes, 32 percent involve a driver between the ages of 15 to 24. Most vehicle crashes are caused by inexperience: the driver loses control because he or she does not know the appropriate ways to avoid potentially hazardous conditions. “In many cases, crashes involving teen drivers could have been avoided if only the driver had been more informed about driving regulations and best practices,” said Andrei Zakhareuski, founder and CEO of Elegant E-Learning, Inc. “The purpose of the written theory test is to ensure teen drivers know driving regulations and how to implement them. “Unfortunately, as many as two out of four learning drivers fail their written knowledge test the first time,” Zakhareuski continued. “Based on information from teens preparing to take their theory test, the learning manuals are often seen as dry and boring – teens don’t feel prepared when they take the written test.” The online platform allows teens to interact with the technologies they’ve grown up using – their mobile phones or computers – to study and prepare for their theory test.

tion, Tuakau pair Boyd Carlson and Michael Williamson brought their Kawasaki KX450F home in fourth position. Smith holeshot the race while Dickey found himself stuck in traffic soon after the start. “It took me two kicks to get the bike started and that cost me a bit. I was down in about 20th place at the start,” said the 19-year-old Dickey. “I knew I had to go hard to not let Adrian get away. I slowly picked off rider after rider and, by about seven kilometres into the opening lap, I was up on Adrian. Then I passed him and started to open out a bit of a gap. “It was a trouble-free race ... no crashes for me and it has me feeling confident with the next round of the Bel Ray Cross-country series coming up in a week or so (on February 9) and then the start of the (four-round) nationals.” It was a Kawasaki 1-1 at the event with Te Kuiti Kawasaki rider Sean Kelly winning the 90-minute junior race staged earlier in the day. Plunket is urging people to keep an eye out for children as they head back to school, noting many children will be venturing off to school for the first time. Sue Campbell, Plunket’s National Child Safety Advisor, say’s for parents and caregivers the start of the school year can be an emotional and busy time. “Every driver on the road needs to be that bit more aware that more children are about, as well as people with prams and strollers, slow down and drive more cautiously. Remember that every time a child travels in a car they need to be in a car seat or booster seat, no matter how short the journey”. Plunket recommend that parents and caregivers seek expert assistance from a child restraint technician to ensure that your child’s car seat fits your vehicle and is installed correctly. Child restraint technicians are available through Plunket’s car seat service, and at a number of other hire outlets or retailers.

Steelers sign Super Rugby players On the back of winning the Ranfurly Shield and making the ITM Cup Premiership semi-finals last year, Counties Manukau has secured the services of two more Super Rugby players. Chiefs Investec Super Rugby championship winning prop Pauliasi Manu and No 8/Loose forward Jordan Taufua from the Crusaders have both signed with the Steelers for the 2014 and 2015 seasons. Steelers head coach Tana Umaga said “It is vital for us to be competitive in the front row and we believe that Pauliasi will bring the confrontational play that we need in that area and with Fritz Lee moving to France we needed to find a replacement with his abrasive and uncompromising style, which Jordan will offer.” “I have been watching Counties over the last few years and I like want is happening there and am keen to make the region home,” said Pauliasi

Manu Former New Zealand Under 20 representative Jordan Taufua said “I am originally from South Auckland so it is nice to be able to return home and have the opportunity to get some regular game time and play some consistent footy.“ Coaches Tana Umaga and Grant Henson have already secured all of their current Super Rugby players which include Tim Nanai-Williams, Bundee Aki, August Pulu, Baden Kerr, Frank Halai, Ray Lee-Lo and Jimmy Tupou for the 2014 season. “Obviously for us the Counties Power Club rugby competition will be very important again this year. We have positions we need to fill and we need to constantly identify and grow our talent so as always we will be watching the competition very closely again to see who stands out and who we believe has potential,” said Umaga. It will be another big year for the

A long weekend for Coastguard A mix of weather conditions and consistent winds together with the volume of water users saw Coastguard volunteers kept busy right around the Northern Region attending to 65 incidents over the long weekend. The traditional mechanical and electrical incidents were mixed with a number of distress calls starting with a distress call from a private fishing charter vessel on the Kaipara Harbour where a passenger had collapsed and was in a serious condition. Coastguard Kaipara volunteers arrived on scene along with the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, sadly the passenger was pronounced deceased by paramedics and Coastguard volunteers then escorted the vessel back to shore. Four adults were counting their luck Saturday after discovering that the bung wasn’t in correctly and water was starting to come into the boat. This, mixed with a wake from a passing car ferry, saw the vessel quickly swamped with little time for

action. A member of the public uplifted the four from the water shortly before Coastguard’s ASB Rescue arrived on scene, before pumping out the vessel and towing it back to Omana near Maraetai. Later Saturday afternoon a distress was issued from a vessel taking on water near Little Barrier Island, Coastguard’s Hibiscus Rescue One was dispatched with volunteers battling high winds and 1.5 metre seas before discovering the eight divers. The vessel had broken down due to mechanical failure and with large seas was taking on water. A private vessel responded to the call with Hibiscus Rescue One arriving on scene within 40 minutes, they removed six of the passengers with the remaining two staying on the boat while it was taken under tow back to Omaha. On Sunday at 1137 Coastguard’s Operations Centre was alerted by member of the public who could see a launch on fire in the Motuihe Channel area. Three rescue vessels

were tasked to the scene with North Shore Rescue arriving in time to uplift the four adults from the 42-foot launch ‘The Mindy’. All persons on board were taken safely back to Auckland however slightly shaken by the incident and one person treated by Coastguard volunteers for minor burns to the arm. As the long weekend came to a close the work wasn’t over for Coastguard Volunteers with a medical distress received by Coastguard’s Operations Centre of a 78 year old male who had fallen overboard. His companion jumped in the water to save him and upon reaching him he was unconscious however had a pulse. Coastguard Maraetai volunteers arrived within 25 minutes and were able to guide the Westpac Rescue Helicopter to the scene where a paramedic was winched onto the vessel. Maraetai Rescue One then transferred the patient and paramedic to shore where the helicopter could land and the patient was taken off to hospital.
