The news that Hunua MP Dr Paul Hutchison is to stand down at the next election is perhaps unsurprising, given that he has already stood successfully in the electorate since 1999, and the drums have been beating for several months that he was looking to head to different pastures. Despite him not having the national profile of many of his fellow MPs, Dr Paul has been one of the most diligent MPs in terms of attending events within his constituency, and for being available to his electorate. During the extended interview we had on Saturday at his Karaka home (see page 12), I said to him with a smile that I’ve always thought he would attend the opening of a door, but the joke had plenty of truth in it. There is hardly an organisation or event in Franklin that Dr Paul hasn’t managed to get to over the past 14 years or so, and he’s always been available for comment or information when needed. The question now, is who will be our next MP? And basically, that means, who will get the nod from the local National Party? With a majority of around 16,000, Dr Paul has ensured Hunua is solidly blue. While local Board chair Andy Baker looks likely to be the local choice if he elects to stand, the near-certainty of election means Hunua is an ideal spot to bring in a high-flyer from outside politics and get them into Parliament. A couple of names have already been bandied around, but with the election likely less than 12 months away, a decision will need to be made soon. It will be new era for local politics, and it could be interesting.

Hunua’s kauri safe - for now Ladies... here’s your chance to try our new range*

An estimated 13,500 hectares of kauri forest in the Auckland region is affected by kauri dieback disease but its spread is slowing down, with research showing the Hunua Ranges are, at this stage, free of the disease. The kauri dieback management programme has just completed a second round of monitoring to determine the extent of kauri dieback disease in the North Island’s treasured kauri forests. Although kauri dieback is killing trees in many areas of Auckland and Northland, tests have confirmed that some of New Zealand’s kauri forests are still healthy and remain disease free for now. Auckland Council Manager of Biosecurity, Jack Craw, says knowing which forests are still healthy, and which are contaminated is critical to ground management of the disease. “We are pleased to see that kauri in the Hunua Ranges, the Coromandel Peninsula and in the Kaimai Mamaku Forest Park, between Waikato and Bay of Plenty, appear to remain unaffected by this deadly disease,” says Mr Craw. “In the Auckland region it’s estimated 11,500 hectares of kauri on private land and more than 2,000 on public parkland are infected and thousands have already died. The latest round of results provides valuable information that will help our efforts to contain kauri dieback, and keep it out of areas

which are currently free of the disease,” he says. Kauri dieback is widespread throughout the Waitakere Ranges, and estimates suggest it is present in around 11% of the dense areas of kauri forest. Its distribution is slightly higher in areas frequented by walkers, such as Piha and Cascades, supporting the theory that humans are a significant factor in the spread of the disease. The organism that causes kauri dieback is a microscopic funguslike disease that attacks and kills kauri trees of all ages and sizes. It is spread by spores in soil and was identified as a major threat to kauri in 2008. The lack of treatment tools for this disease means containment is essential to preserve our kauri forests. On-going research and community efforts continue to raise awareness of the problem, but everyone has a part to play to help prevent the spread of the disease. Erik Van Eyndhoven, Chair of the Kauri Dieback Management Programme, says the agencies that have joined with Tangata Whenua to combat the serious threat to one of New Zealand’s iconic taonga will continue working hard to keep healthy kauri forests for future generations to enjoy. Anyone visiting forests should take precautionary measures, including cleaning shoes, tyres, equipment and machinery.

Ladies nights fun for Waiuku Thursday night was Ladies Night in Waiuku last week, as Bakers Shoes celebrated 21 years in business, Vanilla Homewares held a pre-Christmas preview day, and Mitre 10 held a Ladies Night with representatives from a number of companies demonstrating tips and techniques in DIY - traditionally a bloke’s domain. There were good numbers at each event, and the Mitre 10 function also provided funds for the Waiuku Volunteer Fire Brigade with donations being taken at the door. Left: Lynda Grimmond-Reichel toasts to the success of Fiona Baker at Baker’s Shoes and More. Below left: Raewyn Johnson gets to grips with one of the new products at Mitre 10. Bottom left: Staff and clients at Vanilla Homewares share a preChristmas glass of bubbles at the preview night. Below: Waiuku’s Wendy Dunn finds out about Glenn Torpey’s Mitre 10-sponsored racecar at the store’s Ladies Night.

A reader writes asking to nominate Carol Derecourt for the Wow award this week. Carol works at Waiuku Vet Clinic and contacted the reader regarding the advert for their lost dog in the Post last week. “Carol was up at the Vets on Saturday when ‘Sprintz’ was dropped in by a local farmer. She chatted and looked after Sprintz until the authorities came after closing of the vets. Then, the next day, she saw the advert in The Post and rang me. “Carol described him to me and passed on where he may currently be, and we were able to contact the relevant authorities this morning and he should be on his way home as I write this! “We are grateful to Carol for her observation of the advert in the paper and contacting us.”

With summer fast approaching it’s important to make sure that our children are safe around water. The children from Waiuku Childcare Centre enjoyed a visit last week from Kori the water safety penguin and the team from Swim Magic. They talked to the children about being safe around water and through games, songs and ‘Kori’s story’ they were taught Kori’s rule to ‘Never be in water without an adult watching’. Congratulations to student Shaye who won a pair of Kori’s swimming goggles.

Police and Auckland Council are looking to address the problem of window washers as soon as possible. “From a Police perspective it would be helpful if motorists did not pay the window washers,” says Counties Manukau Police Prevention Manager Inspector Richard Middleton. “The window washers are a hazard at intersections and the activity should not be encouraged with payment.” Police expect that without payment, the window washers will be deterred and will stop bothering motorists and putting themselves in the line of danger by standing in traffic at intersections. Advice to motorists to deter window washers: • Keep your windows up and doors locked • Make it clear that you do not wish to have your window washed • If your window is washed without your consent, do not pay the washer Motorists should call Police if any window washer acts aggressively or is behaving in a dangerous manner amongst traffic.

60 years of worship marked Beauty title for former The Church by the Seashore at Clarks Beach was dressed and ready on Labour Weekend as the congregation started to arrive at 10am for a special celebration service. Rev Bertie Meyer led the almost 100-strong congregation in celebration of 60 years of worship in the church building, and 74 years of Methodist fellowship in Clarks Beach. In 1939 the Rev Orr began Sunday services at his bach by the shore and on Sunday members of his family presented a photo of that bach and one of the original gathering at that first service. The Vice President of the Northern synod, Jan Tasker led the sermon, which focussed on the fellowship and ministry the Church by the Seashore had given to their community over those years. Rev Bertie Meyer presented certificates to Liz Harrop and Ruth Manning in appreciation of the hard work and dedication they have given and con-

tinue to give the church family. After the church service most of those attending moved to the Waiau Pa Hall for a luncheon and to share more memories. There was an amazing array of photos, news clippings, and memorabilia displayed around the walls of the hall. These helped to stimulate even more discussion as people recognised themselves and friends at past functions. This all contributed to a very pleasant and enjoyable time. Inset: Vice President Northern Synod Jan Tasker delivers the sermon to the congregation. Centre below: Rev Bertie Meyer presents Ruth Manning with a certificate of appreciation for her long dedication to the Church by the Seashore. Fireworks fiesta on Friday! Escape for a true ...

D AY S PA E X P E R I E N C E Get a group of friends, family members or workmates together one morning or afternoon for a fun fulled, chilled out pamper in our tropical paradise..... Our ‘Hidden Garden Teahouse’ reopens on Saturday November 2nd If you haven’t visited our Tranquil Tropical Garden yet, we suggest you schedule a date

Above: A Polynesian Dance Group will be joined by a live band, a fire dancer, Mr Bean impersonator, Pukekohe’s own New Zealand’s Got Talent semi-finalist Mayo, and of course, a massive fireworks spectacular in Waiuku this Friday evening as ‘Blast from the Past’ returns for 2013. Waiuku’s ‘Blast to the Past’ family fireworks evening is happening this Friday evening from 6pm. Organisers say this promises to be a fantastic town party with something for everyone. Last year the event attracted fifteen thousand people into Waiuku. The main street will play host to a variety of market stalls offering everything from local art and crafts to clothing and food stalls. There will be live music, exciting family entertainment and visitors and local alike can take in the street atmosphere while dining out-doors ‘plaza’ style at one of the cafés. The entertainment kicks off at 6pm in the town centre with a line-up of acts featuring, Ariki Vaine Polynesian dance group, ‘Fire it Up’ samoan fire dancer, ‘Mr Bean’, Groovit Dance Crew, local celebrity dancer ‘Mayo’ and local band Rhythm Express. The huge 25 minute fireworks display will start at approximately 9.15pm on the Tamakae reserve. Organisers are hoping festival-goers will contribute a gold coin donation to support the Waiuku Information Centre which is run by dedicated volunteers. “Without our wonderful volunteers, the Waiuku Business & Development Association, which is not-for-profit, could not provide this crucial service to our town and it’s visitors. The Guides will be collecting donations in the town centre during the evening,” a spokesperson said. The spectacular fireworks display is again sponsored by Lex and Karen Mills of Waiuku New World who are contributing $20,000 for the pyrotechnics. After a lot of thought Lex

and Karen have decided to retire and sell the business, but will remain living in the area. “I’m sure everyone in Waiuku would agree that the Mills’ have done so much for our community and their support for this event will be sorely missed. We want to make this wonderful family event better than ever this yearand we really hope the community gets behind it, as this may be the last unless we can secure a new sponsor for next year. “With the nature of this event, public safety is very important to us. The business association and council have a safety plan in place to ensure everyone’s safety at this event. On Tamakae reserve and around the fireworks firing zone there will be areas cordoned off with signage and security guards to remind people of the areas to stay away from. There will also be a strong police presence at the event. We ask that the public please adhere to these regulations, behave safely and respect the safety of others,” organisers say. Bowen Street will be closed off from 4.30pm and Queen St from the ASB corner down to the Kentish will be closed from 5pm. People need to move their vehicles from those areas before then to make way for festival activities, otherwise you will be locked in for the evening and your vehicle may need to be removed. The King St by-pass will be closed off at 8.45pm to enable easy pedestrian access to the reserve before the fireworks display. Parking will be available in the Waiuku Business Park and in the old New World carpark on Kitchener Road.

Warning over Great crowd for Titi battle commemorations fire risks

Recent drying winds and little rainfall have led to an increased fire risks, so extra care should be taken when using any form of fire. Auckland Council Principal Rural Fire Officer Bryan Cartelle says that conditions are very dry for this time of year. “Last week there were a number of fire incidents around the region due to controlled burns getting out of control. Aucklanders should consider the safety points around having a safe, controlled burn,” he says. Complying fires must; • be used in a safe and considerate manner • burn during daylight hours only • be supervised at all times • not be a land clearing fire (permit required) • not include green vegetation • not include rubber or plastic items or toxic materials • not include treated timber or building waste In rural areas residents should ensure a fire truck can access property at all times in case of emergency. Mr Cartelle encourages people to be aware of risks and review the safety zones around their homes. “By taking simple measures like removing fuels from near your house, and ensuring that there is enough water on the property, you can give fire fighters a chance to save your home from advancing fire.” With Guy Fawkes on 5 November it is a timely reminder to take care when using fireworks or having bonfires. Also, as we approach summer take caution when using charcoal or wood fire barbecues and hangis.

Over 100 people at the Titi Battle Commemoration last Sunday were treated to a magnificent day for the 6km walk. The large crowd included Margaret Crispe who was one of the people who unveiled the monument that was installed 50 years ago to commemorate the centennial of the battle site. From the top of Titi Hill, (an old scoria volcano), Stu Muir set the scene with a stirring account of what life was like 150 years ago for both Maori and settlers. Close to the battle scene, near the main road, landowner Brian Day shared what he had been told from the previous owner. John Mackle explained how the huge oak trees came to be. They were from acorns gathered by Bishop Selwyn at Windsor Castle that he saved in his pockets for his journey to New Zealand. Children taking part in the walk found the oaks great for testing out their climbing skills. From this site the group travelled up to the top of Whakaupoko, (Bald Hill), along the old bridle path and up to a Pa site that was once the main Pa site of the area. George Flavell (Ngati Te Ata) took the group back over 170 years and explained the Pa design and how life would have been, with a well-fortified site being important for survival. The outlook over Titi Hill and the Whakaupoko Tuff (volcanic basin) were stunning and everyone could appreciate why the Tuff is one of only three listed Outstanding Natural Features in the whole Franklin District. For many it was a moving experience as few Pakeha, let alone Maori, have stood on this site over the last 150 years. Dennis Kirkwood from Ngati Tamaoho expressed his appreciation shared by all, for the opportunity to access the site. With the rest of the journey people were able to enjoy the company of kereru who were most curious. People passed by a place where native bats live. Also, the group was able to see first hand the start of the Waitangi Stream, a tributary of the Mauku Stream and the boundary with the Waikato river catchment. Back at St Bride’s Anglican Church there was

MP looks to new chapter after 2014 elections Dr Paul Hutchison has just announced he is not to seek another term as the parliamentary representative for Hunua, and I’m sitting in the kitchen of his graceful Karaka home while the health-minded MP rummages through his cupboards for sugar. He’s on a health jag at the moment, part of a Parliamentary challenge, so sugar is off limits and he has no idea where it might be. Antonia, his ballet-teacher wife, returns home from a trip to Wellington after his daughters have been competing in ballet competitions, and with her help he manages to put together a coffee which includes a combination of brown sugar and castor sugar. More rummaging reveals a couple of ‘health beers’ which he decides to chill as we wander into his immaculate lawn for a chat about his life in politics. It all started in the 1980s, when he was working at St Thomas Hospital in London, and a voice enquired “would you like a G and T, old boy?” That voice belonged to Sir Andrew Bowden, MP for Brighton, and part of the Thatcher government of the day. Dr Paul, as an obstetric surgeon, had recently operated on the MP’s wife, and they became firm friends over time, enjoying trout fishing on a private lake, and visiting the Houses of Parliament to see politics up close and personal during a seminal time for the United Kingdom. The processes and policy development intrigued the young Paul Hutchison, although, growing up in Wellington he had come from a family which enjoyed vocal debate around the dining table. But politics wasn’t his first choice - he went to Victoria and Otago Universities to further his education and became a specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. His post graduate work was at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, USA, as well as National Women’s Hospital, New Zealand. He became a lecturer for the University of London working at St Thomas Hospital and Addenbrooke, Cambridge, in the UK. It was during his Otago days that he and a mate read a book about a crocodile hunter in Papua New Guinea, and being young and reckless in the late 1960s, he arrived off the Papua New Guinea coast ready to hunt crocodiles with a cut-down .303. Instead, the local government heard of his medical training and threw him into inoculating the local tribespeople. “I actually had never given an injection before, so that was a learning curve!” As Paul says, that experience was a real eye-opener, trekking for hours from one valley to the next, working with a people only a few years removed from the stone age. “Those were the days of the cargo cults, and the villagers would place food under the aeroplanes that brought provisions, thinking that if they fed them, the planes would return.” Paul recalls one particularly memorable Christmas, when an old Polish priest had taught some of the tribespeople to sing carols, and had brought in 50 red cassocks for some of them. That Christmas, Paul says, was amazing, as night fell, and literally thousands of villagers teemed in from the jungle to participate in the Christmas blessings. Having obtained his degrees, and with an interest sparked by his time in London (where, at the same time, his wife-to-be was training with the Royal Ballet, although they were not to meet for several more years), he returned to New Zealand and worked in both the public and private health systems, and was a partner in the creation of the first private day-stay surgery in the North Shore. He attended some National Party events and at one of them met MP (now Sir William) Bill Birch, who suggested that Paul might like to stand for the Port Waikato seat he was retiring from. “I came over (to Franklin) and at the time I had always lived in cities, I hardly even knew what a heifer was!” he laughs.

There were a dozen or more candidates looking for the National party nomination, and the night the decision was announced Paul was called urgently to do a caesarian operation on the Shore. The end result was the birth of a happy and healthy baby, and the announcement that he had won the candidacy - all within a few minutes of each other. It was a tough time for farming in the late 1990s, with subsidies having been slashed, and farmers feeling battleworn over the changes in the political landscape. Paul won the seat for National, and then in 2002 came the disaster for the party, as leadership changes and infighting saw a disjointed party thrashed by Labour. In opposition, he had the chance to develop policy, particularly around health and science, two areas in which he is particularly interested, and in which he feels he has played a significant part in some of the policies currently in place. With a large majority, he retained the seat again in 2005, although again in opposition, but the gap between Labour and National was closing, and John Key’s elevation to leader saw the party and its partners win the 2008 election. In 2011 he increased his majority again - the largest of any politician in the country, but was again to miss out on a Ministerial portfolio. He says he’s disappointed over that, but one senses that disappointment runs pretty deep. Asked whether he would be staying if he was a Minister, he pauses, then laughs and says he had already pretty much decided he wanted to look for a change of direction after 14 years as an MP. I suggest he’s done pretty well to have lasted a decade and a half with his worst PR disaster being caught reading while driving one day. He laughs again, saying it was a Labour supporter who dobbed him in, and “anyway, I wasn’t reading the paper, I was reading some speech notes for a meeting I was going to!” He doesn’t appear to have any regrets from his time in Parliament, with perhaps one exception. As the Auckland Supercity debate was raging, he formed a working party with local Mayor Mark Ball and others to try to keep Franklin separate. He says he worked night and day to try to achieve that, lobbying the local government Minister and others to try to achieve the goal. He thought he was close, and the night before the vote he met with the Minister and with Prime Minister John Key, only to be told there would be no change. “I told the Prime Minister I felt I should cross the floor and vote against it,” he says. “The Prime Minister asked me not to, saying we needed to present a united front.” He believes very much in being part of a team, and although he wrestled with it, in the end he voted on party lines. His vote, either way, would have made no difference to the end result, and by voting for the bill he found himself facing some anger among parts of his constituency. He still thinks teamwork is important, but so is making a stand. “In hindsight, if I could do it again, I think I would cross the floor,” he says. He’s proud of a number of achievements in his time in office. “I’m proud to see policies I have worked on and initiated come to reality. These include the Prime Minister’s Science Prizes, more support for scientists, science innovation and its commercialisation, a research centre to reduce on-farm greenhouse emissions, and the appointment of a Chief Scientist. If New Zealand is to move forward sustainably, we must keep lifting our game in science. “I started select committee inquiries on disability services, immunisation, prostate cancer, clinical trials, and innovation. These have seen positive policy changes. I hope to continue as chair of the Health Select Committee for the rest of this term. I’m pleased we have cross-party support to see our inquiry into improving children’s health

outcomes and preventing child abuse (with a focus from preconception to three years) impacting on future policy.” He’s also very proud of pushing for a Rural Advisory Group as part of the Auckland Council setup, to ensure there is a rural voice in the Supercity. He has the highest regard for Prime Minister John Key, saying he is an outstanding leader, and adding that he sees him as the most financially and economically experienced and competent leader that perhaps New Zealand has ever had. He discussed leaving with the Prime Minister a year ago, and was asked to change his mind, but says five terms has been enough. “It’s right for my family, and for me, to get out and do some other things while I still have the health and the fitness to do it.” He loves his Karaka home and the district, and says his small herd of cattle are his ‘pride

and joy.’ He pauses for a moment, to dash away and bring the beers, (which have now frozen!), so we have a chance to chat about the future MP for the region while we wait for them to thaw. Paul says he doesn’t know who the successor will be. I float a couple of names past him, but he’s not giving too much away. “It’s up to the local National party to decide who they want. It needs to be someone of high integrity who has accomplished things already, someone who has an affinity with the electorate.” He says he treasures his time serving the people of the district. “I’ve absolutely loved it. I’ve met so many absolutely wonderful people in this area, and it’s an incredible area for people providing service to others. Franklin people are incredibly generous, and it’s been an honour to have been their MP.”

Hunua MP Dr Paul Hutchison at his Karaka home on Saturday. Dr Paul says he will not be seeking re-election next year, meaning a new MP for the region he has served since 1999. Post Editor Nigel Ward caught up with him for a chat about his career.

“I told the Prime Minister I felt I should cross the floor and vote against it,” he says. “The Prime Minister asked me not to, saying we needed to present a united front.”

25 years of Waiuku Pukekohe overcomes Tuakau in debate Family Support On November 11 Waiuku Family Support is 25 years old. Started in 1988 as a telephone support line, it has grown to the position where it offers a range of professional services provided by committed and experienced individuals. There are two Community Social Workers available to support local residents in difficulty. They work for individuals, not the Government, and even support local people who are involved with CYF’s, Work & Income, Housing NZ or the Justice Department. In addition, there are two counsellors available to help individuals change to make life better and a group of budget advisors who help people get out of financial difficulty. Most importantly they work as an integrated team. WFS provides access to the food bank which helps people who have got into a crisis situation and if the problem isn’t one covered above, the volunteers on the front desk know where to get all manner of help and support. To celebrate the birthday, Family Support is having an open house at their centre at 56 Queen Street, from 11am to 2pm on Monday November 11. There will be a sausage sizzle outside, nibbles and tea or coffee inside, a brief history of how the group started, and the professional staff will be available to explain what services they offer. All are welcome.

Your Outdoor Room

J

oin the Post Newspaper as we take a journey through the largest area of your home - your outdoor room. It’s your refuge, your sanctuary, your entertainment area for friends and family around the barbecue, and a play area for your children. If you have a well stocked vegetable garden it’s your larder, a pool or spa can let you soak away your cares, and your flow-

ers, shrubs and trees can let you get back to nature and revel in the simple joys of gardening while you relax to the sounds of birdsong and the hum of bees and butterflies.

I

t’s your special place, it’s your biggest room, and over the coming pages we will show you just how great it can be!

Entrances, decks and outdoor furniture A well-designed deck should combine comfort, intimacy, and functionality while looking as inviting as possible. If it’s well organized, it will be an indispensable place for relaxing and entertaining friends. If you’re feeling creative and are good with your hands, you can create your own deck. Be organized: establish a budget and make a list of the different steps involved in the project, including the purchase of building materials, plants and flowers. You might consider hiring a landscape architect or a landscape gardener to do the design or planting work for you. These specialists will know how to design and bring to life your dream deck! Think about how you want to use the space. For relaxation, choose a banquette with big cushions, attractive chairs, a hammock, or a hanging seat. A small table will add functionality to this space. If you’re

more interested in creating a dining area, choose a versatile table and opt for long benches rather than chairs. You’ll maximize the available space and be able to entertain more people. For a deck with a country look, choose traditional materials, such as wrought iron, wood, or bamboo, combined with accessories in soft, natural colours. For a more contemporary decor, choose furnishings in teak or composite and be daring with colours, opting for dark tones such as black or brown accompanied by brightly coloured accessories. For the finishing touch, place hanging plants, potted plants, or even climbing plants in strategic positions. You could even grow fresh herbs as well as flowers in colours that harmonize with your decor. The design of any deck should combine comfort, intimacy, and functionality.

Pathways, retaining walls & landscaping

Stone and concrete substitutes have become essential design elements over the years. They’re durable, stable, require no maintenance and are easy to install. They are also a great way of really anchoring a landscape and highlighting certain elements. Stone is often used to build retaining walls, landings and terraced lawns, and to support elevated walkways, entries and patios. Blocks of genuine stone or its concrete imitation are perfect for building walls of different heights, or for demarcating flower beds and other landscape features. Paving stones come in various designs, which makes them perfect for creating sidewalks, patios, terraces and pool decks. They’re also ideal for luxurious entryways. Concrete slabs are being used more and

Pools and spas

Your Outdoor Room

Whether it’s above ground or in-ground, a swimming pool is a must for the summer. Having fun, relaxing, and sinking into some cool, refreshing water on a hot summer day — sheer paradise! There’s a good chance that on your way home from work all you were thinking about was jumping into the pool. If you don’t have a pool, you were probably dreaming of getting one! After spending a tiring day managing files, slaving away in a manufacturing plant, or looking after difficult clients, a swimming pool is the perfect place for a refreshing dip to unwind and eliminate all that accumulated stress. A swimming pool is the icing on the cake for any

homeowner. Think of all the advantages it can bring to you and your family. Not only is a pool a source of relaxation, it’s also a great excuse to organise gatherings with friends and extended family. Nothing is quite so convivial as a pool when you want to organize a party with those you love. Chlorine or salt? The use of salt instead of chlorine is becoming more and more popular, making the bathing experience even more enjoyable. Not only does salt have the advantage of being odourless, it also does not irritate the skin or causes eyes to sting. Swimming pool specialists will be able to tell you which option is best for you.

Inflatable pools need a consent too! It comes as a surprise to many Franklin residents, but as the Christmas season approaches and families prepare to buy an inflatable pool for summer, it’s worth noting that there’s every chance it needs a consent. The Auckland Council says ANY pool and its associated fencing, which holds more than 400mm depth of water requires a building consent; this includes kitset and inflatable pools, which are erected for a short period of time each season, and spa pools. Pool fencing requirements: The following checklist is a broad guide for meeting general pool fencing requirements. It does not, however, cover every situation and further advice should be sought for your specific needs. • The minimum height for a pool fence is 1.2 metres above ground level. • No space under the bottom of

the gate or fence can be greater than 100mm from the ground at any point. • Fences can be constructed from any type of material provided it is durable and complies with the building code. Living vegetation or hedges alone are not acceptable as pool fencing. • Gates and existing doors must open away from the pool and automatically close and latch when released from a distance of 150mm from the open position. • Any windows in walls forming part of the pool fence that are less than 1200mm from the floor

must not open more than 100mm. • The immediate (fenced) pool area can not contain vehicle or pedestrian access ways, a vegetable garden, clothesline, child’s sandpit, slide, swing or objects not normally regarded as being carried on in conjunction with the pool. • Horizontal support rails must be at least 900mm apart. • There can be no holes or gaps in the fence that may provide a child access to the pool area. • There should be no objects close to the pool fence or otherwise accessible that could assist young children climbing the fence. • When installing a pool fence, use a reputable fencing contractor who knows the New Zealand pool fencing requirements. • If you are unsure whether your pool fence complies, or are thinking about installing a swimming pool or spa, it pays to check with the Auckland Council for advice.

In the shade..... To make the most of the great outdoors, protected from the suffocating rays of the sun, sheltered from the occasional shower and all without going to a lot of expense, an awning is the ideal solution. Over a balcony, a gallery or a deck, an awning is just the thing for a relaxing day. What’s more, it can help reduce the cost of electricity related to air-conditioning. There are many styles of awnings and control mechanisms. A permanently fixed awning allows relaxation in an outdoor living area, rain or shine. You could also opt for a retractable awning, which offers greater flexibility. It could be operated with a manual control mechanism or be motorised, with an electric control mechanism that can

be operated by remote control. As well as protecting the furniture, floors and carpets from the sun’s rays, an awning also adds value and style to a house. Models of different dimensions, patterns and colours allow harmonisation with the style and colours of the house. It is also possible to have awnings made to measure. Always check to ensure that the structure is solid and resistant. It is also important that the canvas is water and mildew proof and that it blocks UVA and UVB rays. For good durability, the mechanical tension of the canvas on the structure should be uniform. You should choose a model that is easy to install and requires little maintenance.

Before buying a barbecue, take the time to think about what you really need. Take into account the available space, the number of people to be fed, how often it will be used, your eating habits and your budget. This exercise will allow you to target your real needs and avoid the purchase of unnecessary accessories. The area that you have chosen for the barbecue will give you a good indication of the size and model you should purchase. For instance, if you can use the barbecue on your deck or in the garden, the

sort of equipment available to you will be different to what you would use on a balcony or in an area where space is limited. Moreover, your needs will not be the same depending on the number of guests for whom you are cooking. Every type of barbecue has a range of dimensions and shapes, which allow you to choose the one that will make everyone happy. You won’t need a luxurious and costly model for an occasional use. However, if you’re a barbecue enthusiast, you’ll appreciate a model that is easy, quick and always ready to use as well as having an efficient heat regulator. Naturally, your budget will influence the type of barbecue you choose along with its size and sophistication. When it comes to evening lighting for your deck and barbecue area, the

choice is almost endless! It doesn’t seem that long ago since the only light around a house was a big spotlight to illuminate the front entrance. Happily, things have changed and, these days, everyone agrees that exterior lighting improves with refinement. Exterior lighting can be divided into three categories: • Functional, to light the front door, steps, garage, shed, etc.; • Security, to discourage unwelcome visitors; • Decorative, to highlight a sculpture or shrub. The two most popular lamps available on the market today are the little solar lamps and low voltage lighting that is connected to the home’s electrical system. Be careful about the intensity of any lights destined for decorative purposes. The idea is to create a soft, nocturnal atmosphere, not to recreate daylight. When highlighting plants and objects, it’s preferable if the source of light is invisible.

Exhaustion-free gardening; it’s possible!

Mowing, weeding, digging, planting, hoeing, pushing a wheelbarrow, and lifting bags of soil are all great ways to stay in shape. In fact, gardening on a regular basis builds cardiovascular strength and endurance, improves flexibility, and helps reduce stress. However, because you use lots of different muscles when gardening, it is a good idea to prepare for every session in order to prevent pain and avoid

Make a plan for your garden! One of the biggest regrets of homeowners is undertaking a landscaping project without a plan. It can also be one of their costliest. Sometimes the error lies in unpleasantly positioned plant arrangements or the cluttering effect of too many gazebos, arches, and paved walkways.

Or the mistake might be in leaving the yard barren of interesting features. Amateur landscapers and avid gardeners can boost their chances of backyard beauty by consulting with a landscape architect or contractor and then realising their projects based on professionally designed plans.

A landscape designer will know how to incorporate your needs, budget, and the special features of your land into a final plan that will enhance your property and increase its market value. One of the advantages of entrusting the design of your project to a specialist is having access to all the latest trends. If you love summer suppers on the deck, a landscape designer might suggest creating an outdoor kitchen with dining, storage, and work areas. If you have young children, your plan could include a play area that makes clever use of limited space. A professional landscape design will allow you to imagine your garden when all the plants have reached maturity. If you have the budget you can always hire a landscaping contractor recommended by your designer to bring your dream garden into reality!

injury. First of all, warm up. The following are all good exercises, if you do them slowly and maintain the position for ten to thirty seconds: squats; forward bends (at an angle of 25o to 40o); and shoulder, neck, and back stretches. For optimal effect, repeat each stretch three times. Before heading out to the garden, think about the jobs you have to do and divide them up so as not to do all the most deman ding tasks on the same day. You could decide to dig over a flower bed for a few minutes to strengthen your muscles and follow it up with a job that increases your cardiovascular and pulmonary endurance, such as pushing a full wheelbarrow. Finish up with a bit of weeding. Remember that every movement is an exercise in itself and that you should always work at your own pace. Take into account what you know you’re capable of and take care not to injure yourself. Take frequent breaks and drink lots of water. Make the most of these

rest periods to do more stretching, and think about repeating them once your gardening session is over.

This routine is particularly important in the spring, when most people are coming out of a long period of winter inactivity.

Tragedies can occur without warning when boaties ignore the key safety messages – wear your lifejacket, take two forms of waterproof communications equipment, check the marine forecast and avoid alcohol. Here are some true accounts of some of the real-life incidents Maritime New Zealand has recently investigated. Thrown into the water Two men who died after their jet boat collided with a personal water craft (PWC) at speed may well have survived – had they been wearing lifejackets. The vessels collided head on at a blind bend on a river, with the 100 km/h impact tossing the three men on the jet boat forward and high into the air. One landed back on the jet boat, but the other two were flung into the water. Their bodies were recovered the next day in five metres of water. None of the men on board the jet boat were wearing lifejackets. Lifejackets were carried on board the vessel, but were not worn. Maritime New Zealand’s maritime officers who investigated the accident concluded that, had they been wearing lifejackets, it is likely they would all have been rescued and may well have survived. Saved from potential disaster Three men balancing on the hull of an upturned boat were rescued after they set off their distress beacon. Hav-

ing the beacon meant rescue authorities were alerted to their whereabouts and plucked from the water, but the story could have been different for the person not wearing a lifejacket if their rescue had been delayed. The men were fishing from a trailerboat about 12 nautical miles from the harbour entrance, but when they tried to raise their anchor it was snagged on the sea floor. In their attempts to free it, the boat was swamped and capsized within seconds. The men managed to climb on top of the hull. Two were wearing lifejackets, and the skipper dived into the cabin to try to retrieve a lifejacket for himself, without success. A helicopter sent to the scene with night vision and a winch was unable to uplift the men because of the rough sea conditions, but they were all able to hang on until a Coastguard vessel arrived. Maritime New Zealand says this incident illustrates how quickly things can go wrong, and there is often not enough time to retrieve and put on a lifejacket. Had the men ended up spending a night in the water, especially without lifejackets, the outcome could have been tragic. Fatal safety lapses A teenager was killed when he fell off a jetski and was hit by a vessel travelling close behind. Had he been

wearing a lifejacket, he would have floated to the surface and immediately been given first aid, which may have saved his life. The teenager was among a group joyriding with three jetskis on a lake after drinking alcohol. The group were taking turns to ride the jetskis and carry pillion passengers, and only some were wearing lifejackets. The jetskis were travelling together at speeds sometimes in excess of 80 kilometres an hour and the riders were making sharp turns close to each other to spray water over the other vessels, a practice known as ‘whipping’. The teenager disappeared under water and, despite extensive searches on the surface of the lake and then by police divers, his body was not recovered until four days later. Investigating officers said the dangers of mixing alcohol and speed are just as real in boating as on the road. The jetski driver had no safety margin and no chance of missing his friend when he fell off immediately ahead of him. Without the buoyancy that a lifejacket would have provided, the teenager sank and wasn’t able to receive medical assistance that might otherwise have saved him. Up to 20 local boaties assisted in the search for the teenager immediately after the incident. He was found by Police divers four days later.

An investigator examines a jetboat after a tragedy which could have been different had the boaties been wearing lifejackets.

Waiuku Cricket crash back to earth After last week’s win in CountiesManukau Premier Cricket, Waiuku suffered a crushing defeat against Papakura over Labour Weekend. Pukekohe-Metro and Papakura retained their unbeaten records whilst Manukau and Karaka have yet to register a win after three rounds of Duthie Cup cricket. With seven games left, all on grass, Manukau’s Duthie Cup season is by no means down the plughole, but they will have to pull something out of the bag soon if they want a ticket to the final. They were beaten by Weymouth on Saturday. Pukekohe-Metro got up over a much improved Karaka, and Papakura were head and shoulders better than Waiuku on the day. Nick Kelly (Weymouth) chalked up the first and only century for the season so far, and Tim Greig (Papakura) registered the first honours board bowling figures of the season. Waiuku v Papakura Papakura made a solid start reaching drinks with 97 runs at a placid 3.88 runs per over. Devon Jones (44) and Henry Gibson (21) set the platform scoring 62 for the second wicket. Gibson’s 21 runs came from 58 balls. Kura flicked the switch after drinks and finished 271/8 at a rate of 5.5 an over.

The in-form Ryan Phizakerley put on 62 before he was bowled by Waiuku’s form bowler, Ben Naylor. Papakura rode their luck as Waiuku put at least eight catches to ground and donated 33 extras, 16 of them wides. Ben Naylor (3/41) continues to impress as a young bowler with huge potential. Waiuku’s reply was less than an over better than a T20 innings. Papakura new-ball bowlers Tim Greig and Jayden Morris bowled unchanged for 20 overs. At the completion of their overs Waiuku was 61/9, and could muster only 66 in total. Manukau v Weymouth Weymouth won the toss and batted without Simon Andrews, Sean Simpson, Tamati Clarke, Cameron Gibbons and Haamiora Clarke in their team. Harry Lyford (46) and Brook Simpson (46) put on 84 for the first wicket. Nick Kelly, batting at number four, scored 107 (76 balls) and Sam Henwood, at number six, was 67 (42 balls) not out. Weymouth finished at 324/5. Already at least one bowler short, Weymouth then lost Brook Simpson for the second half of the match. That brought dual rugby and league international, Kurt Sherlock, into the game as a fielder. On the same day 24 years ago, Sherlock was playing for the

This is one of the best events in NZ that caters for Multisporters, Runners, and Walkers of all abilities. This event is all about getting people out to enjoy the beautiful scenery around the Waiuku district that the average person does not get a chance to see. What people do not realise is that 2 of the event categories are the 9km walk or run and the 21km walk or run, which is suitable for those people who have done no exercise but are looking for a new challenge. We also have an amazing kids event which sees them complete

Kiwis in the Rugby League World Cup. Matt Hunia, given the new ball, struck twice in his first two overs claiming the wickets of Jono Hickey and JJ Mills. Manukau’s middle order did the bulk of the scoring. Ashwyn Herwels (45), Sandeep Patel (41) and Tom Urry (68) batting at five, six and seven respectively made good scores but none went onto three figures as Kelly had done earlier on. Liam Hunia (3/43) and Sam Whimp (3/62) took six wickets between them. Manukau’s innings was terminated in the 46th over still 65 runs shy of their target. Karaka v Pukekohe-Metro Brad O’Callaghan (73) and David Pearce (57) put on 111 for the fourth wicket for Karaka, who gave themselves a chance with their score locked in at 209/9. For Pukekohe, Patrick Hartland (88), batting at five, showed that he’s the gift that keeps on giving with a good allround display of cricketing skills in the match. Pukekohe reached 205/5 with plenty of overs left, but with the end in sight managed to lose three quick wickets. They were near enough, however, and wrapped it up five runs later to claim the win.

Calendar selection for Clarks Beach artist

Trevor Wells has swapped wintery snow covered river walks for sunny water views at Clarks Beach near Auckland, but he’ll be reminded of his UK homeland when he turns the page to October on the new 2014 Mouth and Foot Painting Wall Calendar. Trevor’s painting entitled “Winter River Walk” has been chosen by global organisation the Mouth and Foot Painting Artists (MFPA) to feature on their annual art calendar, which is now available to purchase for Christmas. The painting features a stunning landscape depicting an icy scene beside a river. A second painting entitled “Winters Day” appears as the month of July on a smaller desk calendar. Trevor is a mouth painter and board member of the Mouth and Foot Painting Artists (MFPA), and has recently moved to New Zealand from the UK. In 1978 Trevor was playing for Uxbridge Rugby Club in the UK when a collapsed scrum changed his life forever. Left permanently paralysed, it was impossible for Trevor to return to carpentry, his career before his injury. Following long months in hospital he was persuaded to try painting by holding a brush in his mouth. Despite having no previous interest in art, Trevor devoted the same attention to detail in his painting as he had with carpentry, developing a distinctive style which has made him one of the MFPA’s most recognised and popular artists. Trevor’s favourite subjects are landscapes, which he paints in acrylics most of the time. Often painting from photographs, Trevor’s precise observation of nature makes his paintings particularly attractive. Although Trevor’s winter landscapes are among his most popular subjects and are
