Department of Corrections staff have been looking for a rental property in the Waiuku area to house a convicted sex offender who is rated as among the highest risk in the country. The Post Newspaper understands the man is due for release shortly, and is one of the small percentage of sex offenders who are to be tracked utilising new GPS technology. Department of Corrections staff yesterday confirmed that there were currently no other people being tracked using this form of technology in the Franklin area. Local police had last week not been contacted by Corrections in regard to the offender, but Sergeant Simon Palmer said this was not unusual, and that once any decision was made he would anticipate corrections would advise police at that time. The Post asked what other safeguards or conditions on release would be in place to protect the community, whether local schools or the community at large would be informed, and

whether the Department felt it appropriate to house a high-risk offender in an area which is some distance from the main monitoring and assessment services. Department of Corrections Acting Northern Regional Commissioner Alastair Riach said “No final decision has been made in this case. “When releasing offenders into the community there is a process the Department follows which may include community notification. “Once an address has been established we work closely with local Police to manage high risk offenders.” The Post’s questions as to why Waiuku was chosen as an area to consider housing the man were not answered by the Department. Late last year, Corrections Minister Anne Tolley said 146 offenders nationwide, many on parole or extended supervision orders for child sex offences or violent offending, have been subject to GPS monitoring since it was implemented in August 2012. The decision to impose the

tracking is made by the Parole Board. At that time, 15 high-risk offenders had been identified in exclusion zones, seven of whom were then back in prison, with the rest facing further sanctions or due to appear in court. The Department’s information regarding release of offenders states that under the Privacy and Official Information Acts communities generally cannot be notified about a person’s re-

lease from prison. However, it states, in some cases, sharing information is in everyone’s best interests, including the person released from prison and their family. ‘For example, if the person has a significant history of violent or sexual offending, the Police and Corrections may notify immediate neighbours or agencies (such as schools) that the person is being released, and provide information and guidance.’

Members of the Horseless Carriage Club of New Zealand will be visiting Waiuku this Sunday (February 9), and bringing along some of the oldest working vehicles seen on New Zealand’s roads. The group will be assembling at the carpark near the towns information centre at 9am for a 10am start, and will later attend a lunch at the Waiuku Golf Club where the cars will again be on display. Although the clubrooms will be closed for the private function, members of the community are welcome to view the vehicles in the Golf Club carpark, or near the information centre before the vehicles leave for their run at 10am. Wetlands - preserving our natural heritage Pukeoware farmer Lance Morley has created a wetland oasis in rural Smith Road, Waiuku - a wetland which is officially recognised by the QEII Trust and is now a haven for native flora and fauna. Formally titled ‘The Wetland of Lance and Pam Morley’, the 10-acre area is unrecognisable from the tangle of exotic pest plants, blackberries and gorse which once strangled the gully. “An opportunity came up in 2003 to purchase 31 acres at a pretty good price,” Lance says. “There were a couple of reasons for buying it - one was as a runoff for stock, and the other was as a retirement fund. “I said to Pam (Lance’s wife), we could get the land and hang onto it for eight or ten years and then sell it and retire.” Lance laughs that he doesn’t actually think he will truly retire anytime soon. Now 75, he says he still looks after the stock and reckons farming “keeps me skinny and fit.” The Smith Road property needed some tidying up, and Lance got in touch with local earthmoving contractor Graham Pearce, and between the two of them they drew up some rough plans to create a wetland area with some islands running through a 10-acre length along the boundary of the 31-acre block. Environment Waikato staff assisted with ideas for the design, and Graham’s son Zane took the wheel of the bulldozer to shape the wetlands and clear the tangled weeds. “Young Zane did a terrific job,” Lance recalls, as he looks down over the now-vibrant plantings.

Much of the roughing-out work was completed in late 2003, before a break over the summer period to allow the excavations to dry out, and then Zane returned with the bulldozer to trim the final shapes. Then it was onto the plants - thousands and thousands of them. Over two planting periods, a few months apart, Lance and a pineplanting crew he hired from Pukekohe planted 55,000 plants, grasses, flaxes, and native trees. Many of them are rare species, which his wetland is providing with a chance to regenerate. Funding of about a third of the many, many thousands of dollars worth of work was provided through specific wetland grants, and over the next eight years, the area has grown to a lush, heavily planted area. “It’s tightly planted, because that’s the best way to keep the exotics and the weeds out of it,” Lance says. “You still get some creeping in from the edges, but we come along once a year and clean it out.” As the wetland has developed, that maintenance role is something which has taken less and less time each year - it’s now down to just a few hours a year, rather than the solid week it used to take a few years ago. “Sometimes people put the wetlands in, but then the property is sold, and the new owners don’t realise that they need to look after the wetland. “It’s not a lot of work, but it’s something that should be done.” One of the unusual features of the block is that it has now been split into three titles, two of which are being offered for sale, and all three have

Looking over the property, appropriately enough on Sunday, which was World Wetlands Day, Lance says the development has meant far more than just tidying the gully and providing a haven

for native plants. It’s meant birdlife has returned, and the towering seedpods of the native flaxes are attracting a procession of tuis. Lance says he hopes other landowners take their chance to preserve a part of New Zealand, and join with the government and other agencies who provide funding and incentives to create wetland areas. As of June last year, landowners throughout New Zealand are voluntarily protecting around 125,000 hectares of their land with QEII covenants. The Trust’s core activity is to

secure long-term protection of natural and cultural features on private land, usually by the legal mechanism of an open space covenant. The Trust works in partnership with landowners to protect significant natural and cultural features on their land with open space covenants. Most art followers will know that the Pollok Arts and Crafts Co-op normally holds a major exhibition and competition around Easter each year. This year however, they have decided to break with that tradition and instead bring an event forward in order to coincide with the Pollok 150 year anniversary celebrations. The idea was that this way, not only would the Co-op be getting local artists’ creative juices flowing, but it would also contribute to the interest in the history of the area, and provide another venue and event for visitors to the celebrations. During discussions on the origins of the Pollok community Co-op members came up with the idea of giving the competition the theme of ‘Beginnings’. And so it is; just as the beginnings of the Pollok story are fascinating in themselves, members are hoping that ‘Beginnings’ will offer a wide enough palette of ideas for all those hoping to enter the competition.

Some, of course, may decide to concentrate on an artistic interpretation of Pollok’s history, but that is by no means the overall aim of choosing this theme. Once again, the competition is open to everyone, and all media are welcome. The opening date for the exhibition will be Friday, March 14, and will run for three weeks. A first prize of $500 will again be offered, and participants are urged to have their entries in ready for hanging by Tuesday, March 11. Entry forms will be available either online; pollokarts@ps.gen.nz , or at the gallery. The entry fee will be $10. Fish and Game keen to work with farmers Fish & Game NZ has marked World Wetlands Day (Sunday) by reminding to the rural sector that it’s keen to partner with more farmers to help in the preservation and creation of wetlands. Fish & Game communications advisor Grant Dyson says that Kiwis around the country will be well aware that the organisation has gone in to bat hard at times on environmental issues – especially where clean water and game bird habitat has been put under threat. “The reality behind some of those headlines is that we are working well and very happily with many farmers and other landowners right around the country especially to help enhance or improve good habitats.” Mr Dyson says that Fish & Game offers considerable expertise via its 12 regional offices – a range of free freshwater advisory services. “There is much we can do to help people either enhance existing wetlands and watercourses on their properties – or develop new ones.” This advice, which can include on-site visits and assistance with potential funding, extends beyond help with wetlands, to assisting with moves to improve stream bank management and water quality, and maintain or improve fish passage through culverts or fords. “Landowners should never assume their project is too small for this help, as the right planting and design can do a lot for even small ponds to create a better habitat for birds.” Mr Dyson says there is a growing awareness of the importance of such small ponds in providing good habitat, amid the ongoing loss of wetland areas to urban and farming development, and our new research programme reflects this, he says. Research project starts for local children

Little drama as Mayor takes chair Auckland Mayor Len Brown, along with an entourage of staff and some security, arrived at the Pukekohe Library on Friday for his twice-postponed ‘Mayor in the Chair’ session, Following accusations that the Mayor has been ducking public engagements in recent weeks as he waits for the dust to settle on the fallout from revelations of his affair, and a subsequent council inquiry, there was more than the usual media attention for what should have been a relatively low key event. Two policemen even turned up among a crowd of around 30 library users and bystanders, although there was little controversy. A couple of female protestors chanted ‘Shame, Shame’ as the Mayor entered the library, before he sat and chatted with locals, among them Ganges Singh (pictured left), about Franklin issues. A major research project evaluating the effectiveness of school clinics to help prevent acute rheumatic fever in children is underway in Counties Manukau and in two other area health boards. The research, led by University of Auckland child health and infectious diseases researcher, Professor Diana Lennon, may determine future protocols for school-based sore throat clinics around the country. The three health boards involved in the evaluation are Counties Manukau, Auckland and Bay of Plenty and the study will involve 700-1000 school-aged children in each area. The three-year project is one of three research projects focussed on controlling rheumatic fever in children, underway this year for a total of $2.4 million funded by the Health Research Council NZ. Group A streptococcal sore (GAS) throat is an infectious disease that can lead to acute rheumatic fever and associated heart disease, causing reduced life span in some. Although acute rheumatic fever has largely been eliminated in the developed world, the rates in New Zealand’s Maori and Pacific communities are 30 to 60 times higher than in European and Asian people. “To get the best outcome for these children, we will examine the success of various school clinic GAS control programmes in schools in these three district health board areas,” she says. “The outcome of our research will we hope, help to fine tune the control of rheumatic fever in New Zealand.”

Looking good in 2014 The year is well underway and many of us are now back at work. I’m looking forward to another busy year as the National-led Government focuses on the issues that matter to our community, and to all Kiwis – a stronger economy and more jobs, better frontline health and education services, a safer New Zealand, and rebuilding Christchurch. We’ve all faced a few challenging years dealing with catastrophic events outside anyone’s control – from a global financial crisis to devastating earthquakes in Canterbury. Although the global environment remains uncertain, National has a steady hand on the wheel, providing strong and stable government, and sound economic management. It’s paying dividends and we’ve headed into the new year with strong economic growth of 3.5 per cent. Business confidence is up – the highest since February 1999 with manufacturing confidence hitting a 15-year high. When businesses are confident they make

decisions to invest another dollar and employ another person which means better prospects for New Zealand families. Government is working hard to get the flow of skills, particularly of our young people, into the workforce so they are ready and able to take up the many opportunities the future offers. Consumer confidence is up. People are not getting carried away but they are spending a bit more because they feel more secure about their jobs and incomes. The Government’s books continue to improve with the latest economic update confirming a small surplus in the next year which we’ll build in the coming years so we can repay debt and buffer New Zealand from any future shocks. National’s wide-ranging plan to build a more competitive and productive economy has New Zealand wellplaced to take advantage of the many opportunities available over the next few years. Our exports are growing as are

our construction and service industries as they catch up on house building in Auckland and Christchurch, and that’s spreading around the country. However, it is important to avoid Labour’s mistakes in the mid-2000s, when large increases in government spending and a booming housing market drove up interest rates and the exchange rate, and eroded productivity. So we need to be persistent about a recipe that’s working – sensible, moderate change, making our economy more competitive, keeping the Government’s books under control, and gradually and sensibly building sustainable opportunities for New Zealand families to get ahead. Pukekohe exhibition charts a 13-year art journey

Jon Tootill: Survey 20012014 charts the progression of painter, Jon Tootill (Ngai Tahu), over the past 14 years. The formal opening on Saturday saw a karakia from Kaumatua Whare Hiku, and a waiata performed by Whariko O Te Ao, before introductions of members of the Auckland arts community at Pukekohe’s Franklin: The Centre. Showcasing an important cross section of Tootill’s practice, the exhibition encompasses work from six series, including his Dream-

ers of Fantastic Dreams (2001-2) series, Suburb (2002-3) a surreal, sometimes psychedelic depiction of New Zealand mid-century homes. Also featured are his Pepeha for Lily (2006-7) series, Moko Kauae (2008-9) and the Modernist-inspired geometric painting series’, Rau (2008-9) and Kahui (2009-13), which all include traditional Maori patterning. Jon Tootill is presently in his fifth decade as an artist since he decided as a young

Beware the dangers of the collapsing deckchair Safety display on Saturday Rusty nails piercing flip-flops, allergic reactions to sunscreen, sand in the eyes, slips on spilled ice creams, collapsing deck chairs, burns from the barbie, and pulled muscles from playing backyard cricket. These are just some of the ‘seasonal’ mishaps that led to ACC injury claims last summer. A total of 439,878 claims were received between 1 December 2012 and 28 February 2013. That put summer slightly ahead of winter (435,125 claims) and spring (420,690 claims) but trailing autumn (468,648 claims) as the most ‘injurious’ season last year. ACC Injury Prevention Programme Manager, Megan Nagel, says there are always small numbers of claims each year that have a distinctively seasonal flavour. “Beach-related injuries tend to be more frequent in summer, as you’d expect, while injuries caused by heaters are more common in winter.” However, other types of injuries occur constantly throughout the year. “Falls in the home are the number one cause of injuries in New Zealand, regardless of what time of year it is.” Ms Nagel’s advice to Kiwis wanting to see out the rest of this summer safely therefore includes a mix of seasonal and ‘year round’ injury prevention tips. “Summer can be a popular time for socialising and outside DIY, so we remind people to be responsible hosts if serving alcohol, and pay attention to safety when using things like power tools and ladders.” “During summer, people also often throw themselves back into physical activity after a less than active winter. Building up your activity gradually and remembering to warm up before exer-

Auckland ‘leaning on’ Waikato for water

Federated Farmers is concerned that the Auckland Watercare firm’s application to take water from the Waikato will see lost opportunities for economic growth in the Waikato. “This part of the Waikato River is already nearly full allocated with water takes, at 10 percent of its one-in-fiveyear low flow, so if this application is approved, Waikato ratepayers lose out,” says James Houghton, Federated Farmers provincial president for Waikato. “Watercare are asking for a further 200,000 cubic meters a day on top of the 150,000 they already take, to supply a city that doesn’t pay rates in the Waikato. “Our council needs to be thinking

about the long game here and what benefits there are in giving away Waikato’s resources, which are needed to maintain and build Waikato’s economy. If this consent proceeds under the current rules it is going to strangulate Waikato’s ability to grow. “Right now, under the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management, we are meant to be sitting down with our regional councils and collaborating on setting values and objectives for our local waterways. “Yet before we have had the chance, a significant percentage of our resource could be supplied to another region entirely. “To properly understand the im-

Taniwha reading to mark Waitangi Day A special reading of ‘Guardian of the Bridge’, a story about the taniwha which became the guardian of Auckland’s Harbour Bridge, will be read to captive audiences at libraries across Auckland next week. The free storytime session will be held at 11.30am on Wednesday 5 February at most of Auckland’s local libraries to mark Waitangi Day (the next day). Harbour dolphin warning Boaties need to take greater care in sharing the water, Massey researchers say, as they uncover the impact of collisions between vessels and marine mammals in the area. In a new paper published this month in the New Zealand Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research, the impact of a boat propeller injury on a bottlenose dolphin was reported, with dismaying results. Coastal-Marine Research Group PhD student Sarah Dwyer was lead researcher for the recently published paper describing severe propeller strike injuries sustained by an immature bottlenose dolphin. “In this instance, the bottlenose dolphin sustained injuries that penetrated to the bone. Considering the severity of the wounds, it was surprising that these injuries weren’t immediately fatal,” says Ms Dwyer. The young bottlenose dolphin was observed with a very large open wound behind its dorsal fin and two more evenly spaced parallel wounds on the tail that were consistent with propeller strike injuries. The last reported sighting, in the shallow bays of Great Barrier Island, was on October 21, 2012. Marine mammals in New Zealand are legally protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (1978) —anyone who accidentally kills or injures a marine mammal is required to report the incident to a fishery officer or the Department of Conservation within 48 hours.

Almost $20 million at Select Sale, 1372 yearlings sold overall New Zealand Bloodstock’s 88th National Yearling Sales Series drew to a close on Sunday with increases posted across all key statistics as the hammer fell on the final of 1372 yearlings catalogued over six days of selling. At the completion of Karaka 2014, the combined statistics across the Premier, Select and Festival Sales show consistent strength throughout the week to record an increased average, clearance and median, with 64 fewer horses sold compared to 2013.

A super day’s trade rounded off New Zealand Bloodstock’s 2014 Select Sale on Saturday at Karaka, with the turnover, average, and clearance all ahead of last year’s figures. The Sale that provided eight of the 13 Group 1 winners from NZB’s National Yearling Sales Series last year saw a total of 416 horses sold over the previous three days, with total takings of $19,224,000 (up 11%), at an average of $46,212 (up 7%), and a clearance rate of 75%, up from 71% at the sale’s conclusion last year. This year’s Sale has seen 10 Lots sold for over $150,000 compared with only five last year, and 42 horses sold for over $100,000, 13 more than last year. This year’s median price matched last year’s at $35,000. Saturday’s top price was recorded early in the day when Lot 930 was purchased by Queensland agent John Foote for $160,000. The colt offered by Brighthill Farm was the last Zabeel to go through the Karaka 2014 Sale, and potentially the last yearling by the great sire to be sold at Karaka. Out of Al Maher mare Al Shamekha, the colt is from the international family of Group 1 winners Saddex (Sadler’s Wells) and Spinning World (Nureyev). John Foote purchased the horse on behalf of his Queensland client Ian McCauley who was delighted with the purchase. “Ian is a very good client and a great supporter of the Karaka Sales and he loves a good Zabeel,” commented Foote. “I’ve bought a number of horses over the years with Ian including another Zabeel called Turner Bayou that won the Queensland Cup last year. Lot 926 was purchased for Mr S To by Willie Leung for $150,000. “This colt is a good horse, he’s a strong Zabeel, well developed with a deep girth and Ian was determined to buy him.” Four Lots earlier, Lot 926 was the second top price of the day, purchased by Willie Leung for Simon To for $150,000. The colt by second season sire Thewayyouare, out of the stakes placed mare Alleyrun and a half-brother to the highly regarded Allez Eagle,

“We are very happy with the Sale and thrilled to bits with the horses that we’ve got,” commented Bryce Tankard. “The quality of the Select Sale is right up there, with a very good, even line up of horses, the standard was very high. “We’ve missed out on quite a few this week and come up a bit short so we’ll be back for the Festival Sale on Sunday for sure. “I think there are some very good drafts from first season sires and it is great to see these young sires leaving such outstanding types, it’s very promising for the future.” A total of 11 individual countries were represented on the buyers list, compared with only five at the 2013 Select Sale. International buyers Aquanita, Michael Freedman, Willie Leung, Ger Beemsterboer, B2B Bloodstock and Colin Little were amongst those who stayed on from the Premier Sale and made their presence felt over the three-day Select Sale.

21s - the stepping stone to Premiers Above: Under-21s Head Coach Peter Summerville says ‘this is where it all begins.’ Some of the best-known players of the past are part of a very strong coaching team which are guiding the Waiuku Under-21s side for 2014. Peter Summerville is returning to coach the team for the third year, and says he’s been pleased with the numbers at training even early in the season for both Under-19s and Under-21s. “This is where it all starts,” he says, “nowadays, this is the grade from where players will make their step into the Premiers.” Working with Peter is manager Peter Hamilton and a technical and coaching team that includes Mark Olsen, Phil Faulkner, Wax Saunderson, Darrell Robson and former Premiers coach John Bell. Peter places a heavy emphasis on ball skills for his players, and says getting those basics instilled into the team is the key to allowing them to reach their potential as players. In terms of squads for the season, he says it’s too early to tell, with some months before the first match. “At this stage it’s just about getting everyone involved, making sure those that want to have a go at it can come down and get involved. We want to give guys the opportunity.”

The new coaching team of Paul Graham and Dave Stewart, who will take the reins of Waiuku’s Premier side this season, say there’s a new and exciting look to the team for 2014. While part of that new look is the natural progression of bringing younger players through the ranks, the coaches have also had to produce a squad amid a series of injuries and defections from last year’s semi-finalists. The backline has lost outstanding half Lucky Palamo with an ankle injury received playing sevens in Sydney, while Tom Hulse is also unavailable, Shane Hemi is overseas, Counties and Waiuku prop Simon Lemalu has an overseas contract, and Maka Tatafu is still playing his rugby in Spain and won’t be back until May. Blues lock Ronald Raaymakers is also out for the first part of the competition as he recovers from shoulder surgery. Coach Paul Graham, who makes the step into coaching the Premiers this season after successful stints with local first XV rugby, says it’s just a case of getting on with the job. “We’ll have a very young backline, and it’s a talented side, with players getting the chance to step up from our Under-21 and Under-19s sides. “We’ve got a number of goalkicking options this season, and in terms of our goals for this year it’s simple - to win games,” Paul says, adding with a grin that he’d like the team to go two games further this season than the last, referring to the heartbreaking last minute intercept pass that resulted in a semi-final loss to Pukekohe.

Dave Stewart, who returns in a co-coaching capacity this year, will be looking after the forwards, and says they are still keeping an eye out for some players, but have attracted some new talent into the club, as well as having some of the older stalwarts returning. Tony Misa will be back in action for 2014, and although Raaymakers will be out for perhaps five rounds, Dave says Waiuku may actually get more play from him this year as he doesn’t have Super Rugby commitments with the Blues. Joining the squad is Dan Fitzharris, a rangy lock who has played for Coastal in Taranaki and was rated as one of the top locks in club competition, as well as a former NZ Universities player. Work has brought him to the area with a local veterinarian business, and, now living in Karaka, he adds some height to the Waiuku pack. “We’ll have a strong forward pack again this year,” Dave says, as Paul adds that there is plenty of competition for spots throughout the team. Both say one of the features of the team is the number of players who have grown up in the area and come through the ranks. Among those is one of last year’s age-group standout players, Nathan Millar. The outside back has made the most of his opportunities, and is an example of the progression structure open for young players who can see a pathway to the top side. The club opens its play for 2014 with a game against Waikato Univeristy later in February, before the first chance for locals to see them at home, against East Coast Bays on March 8.

New club captain treasures Waiuku’s rural rugby 2014 Waiuku Club Captain Richard Yuill grins that he may be the first-ever club captain for the red and greens not to have played for their Premiers, but he’s set his sights on maintaining Waiuku’s reputation as a leading rural club. Richard played much of his rugby for Pakuranga, along with a match for the Barbarians, and his son is part of the Waiuku senior squad this year. He has coached for several seasons, and collected a title with the Under-19s, and has been a fixture at the club for the past nine years. Known through the district as a leading horse trainer, Richard says he’s lucky enough to have the time

this year to get more involved with the club management. In terms of maintaining the Waiuku ‘feel’ to the club, Richard says March 8 will be a true family day, as a group of East Coast Bays sides play all senior grades at Waiuku, with a spit-roast barbecue at the grounds. Taking over the club captain role from Dale Loveridge, Richard says he sees his role as making sure everyone knows where the club is heading, and assist them to build a happy atmosphere within the club as a whole. He says there’s a new young committee team this year and he is looking forward to working with them to keep Waiuku rugby strong.

Bronze medal at IRB champs for Kariaotahi Surf Lifesaving Kariaotahi Lifeguards have been kept busy over the last month with a wide range of incidents on land and water keep the team on their toes. On the 2nd of January tragedy was averted after patrol had finished for the day and lifeguards were just closing up for the night when a father and son were spotted stuck in a strong rip and getting sucked out to sea. An IRB was quickly readied and launched, managing to pull the pair in with seconds to spare. Lifeguards skills and services don’t stop at just water rescues, they are also the first response to medical emergencies at the beach. Unfortunately the services of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter have been called upon twice with the first incident when a male came off this motorbike resulting in back injures and the second when a female was thrown from the back of a ute.

Along with this there have been more common injures which have included a dislocated shoulder and a large number of bluebottle stings. The clubs IRB Racing Team competed at the Northern Region IRB Champs recently with the senior men’s crew picking up a bronze medal in the tube rescue race, a good result leading into nationals in March. The clubs has nine new lifeguards who recently qualified and will be join the ranks on patrol for the remainder of the season. If you have any questions while at the beach please don’t hesitate to approach one of the guards on patrol they will be happy to assist. Lastly please remember to swim between the flags. TV time for Pukekohe netballers Pukekohe High School’s top netballers get a chance to play their matches in front of the Sky Sport camera this season afer Netball New Zealand yesterday confirmed the draw for the 2014 College Netball competition which will run parallel to the ANZ Championship from March 3rd. Twelve of the 18 College Netball matches will be televised on SKY Sport with those matches broadcast Monday night before the ANZ Championship game. The College Netball Grand Final will be at The Trusts Arena in Auckland prior to the ANZ Championship match between the Northern Mystics and West Coast Fever on Monday May 26.

One Base kicks off on Wednesday Starting this Wednesday, the Counties Sport Fishing club commences its major tournament of the year, the One Base event, with hundreds of anglers trying their luck over three days to catch not only the best fish, but a chance to win a magnificent boat and trailer prize. The Post wishes all anglers a safe and enjoyable tournament, and, although they might not catch too many hapuku, we thought we’d offer this white fish recipe, as groper is ‘Fish of the Month’ for February, according to the New Zealand Seafood Council. Hapuku and bass, collectively known as groper, are cosmopolitan fish, found in three of the world’s five oceans: the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. These deep-bodied species prefer temperate water. Some have a propensity to lurk in caverns, around shallow reefs and pinnacles, while others prefer to live at depths of up to 400 metres. They are social fish, rarely found swimming alone, often congregating in schools of 30 or more.

Available year-round, groper have firm, white flesh with few bones, ensuring broad appeal. Treat these fish with care to preserve their delicate flavour and succulence, and allow the fish to be the star of your dish. It can be baked, grilled, steamed, pan-fried, poached or barbequed. Groper smokes well too. The hard-won flesh in the cheeks is particularly delectable. Hapuku has strong potential for international aquaculture.
