‘Build it, and they will come’, is a saying which came to fruition in full in Waiuku on Friday evening, as the town hosted its Blast to the Past fireworks spectacular. While crowd numbers are not that easy to quantify, it is certain that there were thousands upon thousands of people who crammed into the streets and reserves to take part in the fiesta atmosphere and the fireworks. Any large event will have its occasional glitch, and the delay prior to the fireworks had a few people grumbling, but as a town-wide celebration it has few equals. I had the chance to chat to many of the stall holders and plenty of locals and visitors from out of town, and the overall theme was that this is an event which needs to be retained. It’s also an event which likely would not have happened without Waiuku being part of the Auckland Supercity, and thus receiving funding from the local business community, via a targeted rate, for the Waiuku Business and Development Association. The benefits of having a dedicated team working with Sharlene Druyven as town centre manager were clear to see. Although it was the final year of Lex and Karen Mills’ sponsorship of the fireworks themselves, it is to be hoped suitable funding can again be found to make the event even bigger and better in the future. Along with the Steel and Wheels event, and the forthcoming Christmas Parade, Waiuku has some flagship events which locals can be justifiably proud of.

Disappointment over donations at fireworks event While I must congratulate Sharlene Druyven and her team of volunteers for the great evening they put on with Blast to the Past, I am very disappointed at the reaction from many people when asked for a donation toward the information centre. As a volunteer with many local groups, and at many local events, I know how hard it is to run some of the organisations, especially when they don’t receive a lot of outside funding. The information centre is a great asset to our town, and is manned totally by local volunteers. It didn’t seem a lot to ask for a gold coin

Commemoration next Monday The Waiuku Returned Services Assocation are hoping for a good turnout of local people at the Waiuku Cenotaph on Monday, November 11, as they mark Remembrance Day. Remembrance Day (also known as Armistice Day) is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth countries since the end of World War I to remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty. This day, or alternative dates, are also recognised as special days for war remembrances in many non-Commonwealth countries. Remembrance Day is observed on 11 November to recall the end of hostilities

It was disappointing to see so many people push past the young people who were collecting for the information centre, and in some cases they were plain rude. Ladies Choir in Waiuku on Sunday A popular choir which was formed in 1954 will return to St Andrews Centre in Waiuku this Sunday. The Waitakere Ladies Choir performs all over Auckland, and most recently held its annual variety concert at the Blockhouse Bay Community Centre. Musical director Vanessa Felix has been with the choir for

three years, and is a specialist music teacher, playing the organ and violin as well as singing, teaching and conducting. The choir started as the Te Atatu CWI choir and changed its name to the Waitakere Ladies Choir in 2000. Since then, the group has performed at many major festivals, and has been

part of several massed choir events. They have also appeared several times on TV One’s ‘Praise Be’. Sunday’s concert will include a variety of easy listening, popular songs which should appeal to all music lovers. The hourlong performance begins at 2pm, followed by afternoon tea for a $5 entry fee.

We’ve had the global financial crisis and the devastating Christchurch Fill the grid so that earthquakes.Under our and stable leadership, every row strong and every New Zealand has dealt with these 3x3 square contains challenges and made good progress the digits 1 to 9facing economic in a world difficulties. The government’s latest annual accounts show we’re well on track to surplus in 2014/15, with the Solution No.1314 9 6 4 deficit 8 1 5 to a four year low. 7 2 3 falling 7 2 3 1 We’ve 8 5 6more 9 4 than halved the 3 second year in a 6 4 9 for 2 7the 8 5 1 deficit row and beaten our forecasts. Kiwi households, businesses, and the Government have adapted to the difficult new

conditions. Business confidence is at its highest in more than three years. Businesses are more optimistic, activity is rebounding, and this is gradually leading to more jobs and higher profits. In the next two years, New Zealand is forecast to be one of the strongest-growing advanced economies, according to the International Monetary Fund’s annual World Economic Outlook. Returning to surplus in 2014/15 is important. But it’s not an end in itself. What matters is how a growing economy will help Kiwi families. A stronger economy gives us choices about investing more in priority public services, starting to pay down debt, and restarting payments to the Super Fund from 2020/21. A stronger economy will provide more jobs, more opportunities, and lift incomes. By contrast, the

Opposition has a recipe of more spending and more debt. They want the government to take over housing, electricity, and the job market. They would not be able to deliver what families need, or what they are promising. Instead, their approach would undo all the hardearned progress that Kiwis have made. National will stick to our plan. It’s working. Our plan has seen a more efficient public sector while the most vulnerable are protected. Forecasts are for a stronger economy year after year. This is the only way to create more jobs, higher incomes, and the better public services that families need. Follow me on twitter at @PaulHutchisonMP or on Facebook at facebook.com/PaulHutchisonMP

Town manager thanks community for support Waiuku Town Centre Manager Sharlene Druyven says she is delighted with the turnout to Friday night’s Blast to the Past fireworks spectacular and market, and says it was a true community effort. “The Waiuku Business and Development Association would like to thank everyone who came and shared in the magical evening,” she said yesterday. “With thousands attending and the huge array of live music, markets and family entertainment, the event was a great success. Unfortunately, due to unpredictable weather during the day, this caused a few headaches in the setting up of the pyrotechnic display, leading to a delay from the planned 9.15pm start. Also due to low tidal flow there were issues with the barge being floated to its location before firing of the fireworks.” Sharlene says other than the delay, and a few problems with people consuming alcohol, quickly dealt with by the large police presence, the event went off without a hitch. She adds that there were a number of people who contributed to the success of the event. “A huge thank you to Cory and Tracy Smith and family for the hanging of the lights, helping with the signage and setup and managing the se-

curity on the night. “The Girl Guides did a fantastic job collecting the gold coin donations for the ERG signage and the Waiuku information Centre, and the Waiuku College 9CH students for their huge efforts in the set up and clean up of the streets after the event. “The Lions volunteers were a great help as usual, and we are very grateful to them for contributing all their profits from the BBQ and chip proceeds to the Waiuku Information Centre. “Hopefully many of you

managed to visit the information centre on the evening and meet some of our fantastic volunteers, without whom this centre would not be able to operate.” While volunteers ensured the event ran as smoothly as possible, the event simply could not have happened without the support of sponsors, and Sharlene said she was enormously grateful for their contribution. “Lex and Karen Mills from Waiuku New World, being the main sponsor, contributed $20,000 to the

pyrotechnic display, the WB&DA, Top Hat Magic and The Local Board also were very supportive. Thanks once again to the community for getting behind this wonderful event.” Sharlene doesn’t have much time to take a break after the rigours of the Blast to the Past - she is already hard at work on the third of the major annual events for the township: “I look forward to seeing you all at the Waiuku Christmas Parade on the Saturday of December 14,” she says.

Members of Waiuku College’s 9CH class did a great clean-up job after the event. More photos of Blast to the Past on page 15 this week.

Halloween not suitable Dairy Awards launch evening set for Pukekohe in New Zealand - letter

On Thursday evening last week (Halloween), a fairly small child knocked on my front door. I am aged mid70s, am very far from well and live alone, so I don’t open my doors unless I know who is likely to be there. On checking, I saw the small child with grotesque/ ugly mask on his/her head & wearing a Halloween-type gown. What concerned me greatly was that this child was unaccompanied by an adult. In my opinion, it was very unwise for the parent(s) of that child to allow it to go “tricking/treating” by itself. I am fairly sure that the child didn’t know me (as I didn’t know who the child was. I think it is simply not safe to let a young child walk the street(s) alone and knock on doors of houses - especially in the evening. I sent the child away “treat”-less because I find such Halloween behaviour abhorrent. I also ask parents: how do you think you are serving your children by allowing them to participate in “tricking/treating”? In my opinion you are encouraging your children to think that it is satisfactory behaviour to ask/demand that others give your children something for nothing. That is NOT an appropriate value for anyone - let

alone children - to live by. I know of a woman half my age, who felt intimidated by a group of ten children, and she didn’t have enough sweets to go around! Think about it: “trick or treat” - there is a threat inherent in the phrase. A s far as I’m concerned that’s not what Halloween is about; to “trick or treat” is nasty! Halloween as “celebrated” in NZ is a horrid American import that we in New Zealand can well do without. What has happened to the concept of children being of service to others? Time was when Girl Guides, Boy Scouts, Cubs, would at least once a year - if not more often - go out into the community and seek to be of service to others, especially the unwell and the elderly. Organisers of the 2014 Auckland Hauraki Dairy Industry Awards are holding two launch events to encourage potential entrants to become future winners, with one of them to be held at Pukekohe’s RD1 store next week. Regional convenors Jeff and Bronwyn Ward say the launch events in Ngatea and Pukekohe aim to provide those interested in entering either the Sharemilker/Equity Farmer of the Year, Farm Manager of the Year or Dairy Trainee of the Year contests with some information and insights from past winners. The Wards won the 2011 Auckland Hauraki Sharemilker/Equity Farmer of the Year title and are convening the awards for the first time. They say there are a number of reasons why people should consider entering. “We believe that people can’t afford not to enter because of the personal and business

For Kylie and Michael Cox, winning the 2013 Auckland Hauraki Farm Manager of the Year title has helped them to achieve some of the goals they have set for themselves – as well as giving them $10,500 in cash and prizes. “They are both highly motivated to achieve their goals

in an industry they are passionate about,” Bronwyn Ward says. The feedback from judges and other contestants was valuable for 2013 Auckland Hauraki Dairy Trainee of the Year, Mathew Whittaker. He won $5000 in prizes and said the awards had introduced him to great people that had become lifelong friends. The New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards are supported by national sponsors Westpac, DairyNZ, Ecolab, Federated Farmers, Fonterra, Blue Wing Honda, LIC, Meridian Energy, Ravensdown, Triplejump and RD1, along with industry partner

RAYD backing a ref

High tea and garden ramble

Promising young touch rugby referee, Nelson Akast is the latest recipient of funding from local group Rugby and Youth Development, (RAYD), to assist him in developing his career. The organisation provided Nelson with $800 towards his uniform and ancillary costs leading up to some forthcoming tournaments. Nelson started out in refereeing as a youngster at Aka Aka School, and showed early promise, rocketing his way through the grades to already being qualified to referee Open Mens national tournaments (similar to rugby’s ITM Cup), and is hoping to qualify as a Level Three in the national and secondary school tournaments this year. A Level Three qualification would make him eligible to referee at World Cup events, and is a stepping stone towards what he hopes will be eventual selection as a referee in the Rugby Sevens format. He has his eye on a spot at the Olympics in 2020 in that capacity, and says there is the possibility of a career in his sport, although he intends to complete his building apprenticeship first. The grant from RAYD is one of six grants made to local sportspeople this year. In addition to the $800 for Nelson, the group has supported Chad Whitehead (hockey, $1000), Savarna Asafo Tavita (netball, $1100), Waiuku College Clay Target Shooting ($1749), Under-21s and Reserve Rugby ($300), and William McDonald (U21 NZ Axeman, $1360). Pictured right with Nelson last week is Bruce Thomson, one of the members of the RAYD group.

The Karioitahi Konexions Relay for Life team are holding another fundraising event to try to attain their goal of $100,000 raised since they formed several years ago, and this time it is a garden ramble and high tea through a stunning Waiuku property. The event is held this Sunday, November 10, at ‘Jan and Arthurs’, 15 Cameron Road Waiuku, from 1pm to 3pm. The Konexions team is around $19,000 away from their target, and aim to complete it by the next Relay for Life event in 2015. The high tea will also see raffles available as well as a chance to wander through the beautiful two-acre property. Tickets are $15 per person, and gate sales will be available on the day.

Top scorers from ITM Cup comp Waiuku’s Wolf and Beaver bar celebrated the conclusion of its ITM Cup competition last week at the newly-renovated downstairs bar. Pictured from left are organisers Brian Palmer and Debbie Groot, plus two of the successful prizewinners, Wax Saunderson and Bob Groot.

Four decades of serving his community Elton Knight has been a part of the Waiuku business community for more than four decades, but last month retired from his role as a funeral director with Grahams Funeral Services to spend more time with his wife Billie, and his family. Elton’s working life began in Waiuku’s main street with well-known store Duthies, as a school-leaver, before being asked by owner Len Sullings to work in what was then Mr McDonald’s mens clothing store. Born and raised in Waiuku, Elton attended Waiuku College when it was on the site of the current View Road School, and his father was a funeral director with the company that was to become Grahams Funeral Services. It was to be 30 years later that Elton was to take on a similar role with the company, but he became an icon of the local business community through owning and operating Knight’s Menswear with Billie. For 27 years Elton and Billie owned Knight’s Menswear, an experience which Elton says he thoroughly enjoyed, having the opportunity to meet some wonderful people, and form close relationships with many, many people in the district. His ability to relate to people of all walks of life, and build a rapport with local families was one of his major assets when he was approached 13 years ago by Grahams Funeral Services to work as a funeral director. As Elton says, working with

Elton says, while it can be a difficult time, it has also been a tremendously rewarding experience, being able to assist families to ensure the passing of one of their own is handled with respect, dignity and care. Elton’s retirement has seen the return to the local area of Lynn Harding, who comes from a family background in the profession, his grandfather having started a funeral business in Taranaki which still operates today. Lynn started as a funeral director in Tauranga, and has been acting as a locum for other

funeral service companies when they have had staff away, however he has close links with Franklin, and particularly the Waiuku area. “I’ve known Elton for near-on 20 years when I first lived in Waiuku, (our sons grew up together), Lynn says. “It is perhaps fitting that someone he knows, succeeds him.” Elton’s declining health has necessitated his early retirement. The many people whose lives Elton has touched over the past four decades in business locally would no doubt be wishing him well.

THANK YOU ELTON Mark Graham and the team at Graham’s Funeral Services wish to publicly thank Elton Knight on behalf of the people of Waiuku and Districts for his loyal, dedicated and professional service to many, many families as a Funeral Director with Grahams over the past thirteen years. Sadly, declining health has resulted in Elton’s premature retirement. Our heartfelt best wishes to Elton and Billie. We also wish to announce that Lynn Harding, a former Waiuku resident and experienced funeral director has joined our team. He will continue to provide the high level of professional service for the people of the Waiuku and Districts community. Local support for Tall Ships

The Auckland Tall Ships Festival held over Labour Week-end attracted over 187,000 people over the three day festival and a large number of locals were also seen amongst the crowd. Among these were the Waiuku-based Franklin Young Mariner Unit; the only group to attend in their uniforms which allowed them entry to ships where the general pub-

lic were not able to see. One such vessel was the Oosterschelde which has links to Waiuku through a local Dutch family and was arranged through another local resident and founder of the Young Mariner organisation Ron Bird. Ron’s role was as Chairman of the Shore Support Committee which worked prior to, during and even after the

event as some ships stayed in New Zealand waters for sometime after the weekend long Auckland event. Another Waiuku connection was a local resident who is also a Customs Officer travelled to Opua in the Bay of Islands to clear the vessels into New Zealand. The Fleet departed Sydney and raced to Opua, before the vessels then made their way to their allocated positions ready for their ceremonial entry into Auckland harbour on Friday afternoon. This was led by HMNZS Wellington, two sailing wakas, two scows (including the Jane Gifford), with the overseas vessels taking on board a New Zealand based captain with experience in these types of vessels. Crowds packed vantage points as the vessels moved up the harbour and tied up at their allocated berths on Princes and Queens wharves. Behind the scenes in the Operations Centre established in the Maritime Museum‘s Endeavour room swung into action with radio links and other facilities to ensure that the event went well. This centre housed the Project Manager, Sail Training International representatives from UK and Australia, Shore Support Team, facility managers, security and in an adjacent room the volunteer staff who assisted with crowd control and the ambassadors

who acted as a liaison with each of the visiting vessels. A key person in the centre was another local, Sylvia Bird who at times singlehandedly managed a range of enquiries and situations whilst the various teams were out fulfilling their front line roles. On Saturday morning the Royal New Zealand Navy Band led a colourful parade of the vessels crews some in fancy dress from the Viaduct to the Cloud building on Queens Wharf for the official welcome and powhiri after which the ships were opened to the waiting public and activities form children and adults commenced in the Cloud which was also very popular.

Sunday was even more popular than Saturday and featured a range of entertainers including the Maritime Crew who specialise in sea songs and shanties and who drew large crowds at their various performance locations on the waterfront. Monday saw preparations for departure with food stores, fuel and other essentials being loaded before the vessels cast off their lines and hoisted sails as they moved out into a harbour crowded with small and large craft and again large crowds on the shore at the various vantage points. The vessels then sailed down the channel out of the harbour. The Lord Nelson, which

is owned and operated by the UK based Jubilee Sailing Trust, was specially constructed to carry approximately 50% handicapped people as crew with a voluntary ambassador who stayed in Waiuku with her husband whilst preparing fore the ship’s arrival from Australia. After the Auckland Festival the ship visited Napier and will call at Wellington and Nelson before returning to Auckland for a ten day trip around the Bay of Islands and finally leaving Auckland on the 15th of December for a voyage around Cape Horn and home to England. Another vessel, the Picton Castle, is also scheduled to return to Auckland before finally departing for overseas.

Abstract winner at Pollok New rubbish bylaw comes into effect

The Pollok Craft Co-op’s annual Labour Weekend exhibition is in full swing at the gallery, and the winner of the ‘Abstraction’ art competition is local artist Howard Hirst for his driftwood sculpture ‘Prey’ (pictured above). The Labour Weekend competition and exhibition has been running since 2008 and has attracted plenty of interest for the gallery, with many Peninsula visitors stopping in for a look over the local artists’ work and to enjoy a coffee in the recently-redesigned sculpture garden. Below: Some of the entries in the Co-Operative’s exhibition on Saturday.

Free service as new recycling operation launched in Waiuku This Saturday sees the official Open Day launch of a new recycling centre in Waiuku, one which owner Jurie Breytenbach says means local people can now dispose of their unwanted appliances without having to pay hefty dumping fees. In fact, the service is free, and in many cases Jurie is able to collect fridges, washing machines, televisions or similar appliances, ready for recycling at the Waiuku Business Park operation. Jurie, a member of the Franklin

BNI chapter, has developed the business after many years working with New Zealand Steel, where he built strong relationships with many of the key players in the New Zealand recycling industry. The end result has been the creation of RAYS (Recycle All Your Stuff ), and a modest workshop at the business park which provides base for the recycling business. Jurie restores some of the items, uses others for components, and separates some of the equipment to provide a total recycling operation - some of the items will be turned into art or signage through a plasma cutter which is being installed at the site. When he’s not helping people solve their waste disposal issues, Jurie enjoys spending time with his wife Ansa and their three sons, Jurgens, Jerry and Janus, who all attended local schools. The business has also provided opportunities for local employ-

ment, with Julie Hyland working as marketing consultant, and Luke Bignell employed as the site handyman. RAYS accepts most appliances and whiteware, in fact most things with metal componentry, but does not collect old furniture. The Open Day this Saturday between 10am and 11am will feature a free sausage sizzle and chocolate cake and a chance for people to drop off their items and also have a look around the premises. Visitors can also check out the range of trailers which RAYS has for hire at very reasonable rates, and which include a double horse float and several other trailers. “We look forward to meeting local people and showing them how we can save them money, while also making the most of recycled products,” Jurie says. All proceeds from the recycling on the Open Day will be donated to the Waiuku Estuary Walkway project.

8 Steps to good nutrition

By Yvonne Gloor, CCN, CMTA, PT 1. Keep it simple. This simply means choosing the least processed forms of foods (specifically carbohydrates) when building the majority of your meals. Typically, the less processed the foods and the closer the food that you are eating is to its natural state, the better it will be for your body. 2. Eat a rainbow often. The vitamins and minerals that our bodies need come naturally from the foods that we eat, and especially from fruits and vegetables. Eating a variety of fruit and veg in a multitude of colours will help to ensure that you are getting the variety of nutrients that you need.. 3. The fewer legs the better or none at all. Protein is a critical part of any diet, specifically the type and the amount. Fish, turkey, and chicken rank high. You need to be more selective with dairy, red meat and pork products. Lowfat dairy, lean cuts of pork and beef, and grass-fed four-legged animals are best! Vegan and vegetarians options are legumes, nuts

Introducing Andy Ma

& seeds or tempeh. 4. Eat fats that give something back. It is recommended that 20-30% of the total calories come from fat. The best types of fats to include are raw nuts, seeds, olive oil, nut butters, coconut oil and fatty fish. The forgotten fats are the essential fatty acids. These fats decrease inflammation but, due to their essential nature, must come from the diet. 5. Three for three. Eating consistently maintains energy levels (blood glucose), keeps the body in a fed state, and prevents mood swings and bingeing. Combining the three main nutrients (carbs, protein, fat) every three hours (hence the ‘three for three’) will prevent extreme hunger, which will make healthier food selection easier. 6. Eat breakfast every day. Eating breakfast every day is critical, yet it’s an absent habit for many. Breakfast doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. Eating breakfast gives the body the fuel it needs and sets your metabolism up to function correctly throughout the day. 7. Hydrate. Dehydration equals decreased performance and can lead to constipation. Depending on your activity level, fluid intake can vary from person to person. Fluids should consist primarily of water and other naturally low- or non-caloric beverages. 8. Get back in the kitchen. In a world of convenience, travel and life on the go, we often turn to restaurants, fast food, and ‘quick’ food for our nourishment. Restaurants, regardless of type, do not take into consideration your calorie needs or your health when deciding upon their menu. The more you can prepare your own food, the more control you will have in the nourishment of your body.

TENNIS or GOLFERS ELBOW? Do you experience arm/elbow pain?

From 2002 I started to be involved in traditional Chinese medicine and Tui Na/ChineseMassage. Tui Na/Chinese Massage is an Oriental Bodywork Therapy that has been used in China for 4000 years. Tui Na/Chinese massage is a powerful and effective tool to relax and reduce stress and pain in our daily lives and to restore a sense of wellbeing. Through Tui Na/Chinese massage we have the ability to harmonise and balance ourselves physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. I am aiming to give my clients a better experience and understanding of Tui Na/Chinese massage and traditional Chinese medicine. I consider human body and environmentas a whole system. There are no two person the same, so techniques will be adjusted to suit for the individual. You’ll get a better flow of QI after treatment to allow the body naturally healing itself. With the warmer weather and longer lighter evenings it’s time to dust off that tennis racquet and those golf clubs and get out into the fresh air. But does this mean an increased risk of Tennis or Golfers Elbow? ‘Tennis Elbow’ and ‘Golfers Elbow’ are not necessarily terms confined to those who play tennis or golf but are terms that are applied to an overuse/overstrain of the muscles in the forearm. The two conditions differ slightly and will very slightly in their treatment and management. Both conditions produce pain in the forearm but Tennis Elbow affects the muscles at the back of the forearm and on the outer aspect of the elbow and Golfers Elbow at the front of the forearm and on the inner aspect of the elbow (note: with the arm by your side and palm facing forward).

What is Ubiquinol?

Ubiquinol has a critical role in energy production, and is found in every cell in the body. Studies have shown clear benefits from Ubiquinol supplements for issues of heart disease, blood pressure, gum and oral health, and even nervous system challenges.

Benefits: • • •

Energy – Without the presence of Ubiquinol within the

body’s cells, cellular energy cannot be generated or sustained. Antioxidant – aciea’s Ubiquinol is one of the most powerful known lipid-soluble antioxidants available. If CoQ10 Is Cheaper, Why Do I Need to Take Ubiquinol?

There are a few forms of CoQ10 out there. Regular CoQ10, which is called “ubiquinone” and the form we have been referring to, which is called Ubiquinol, and is the non-oxidized, active form of CoQ10 in the body. As demonstrated in studies, Ubiquinol has an average of four time’s superior bioavailability to ordinary CoQ10, which means it gets absorbed into the body and blood stream

Twitching muscles? Muscles cramps? Unfortunately, in most of the developed world, magnesium deficiency is probably the most common nutritional deficiency. Because it has so many crucial functions, and because it appears to protect us from serious conditions that are most prevalent in the developed world, magnesium really is the “miracle mineral.”

The wrists and hands are powered by very strong, long muscles that extend from our wrists to our elbows. The site of attachment at the elbow is pain sensitive and when we overuse the muscles we place a strong mechanical burden on both the muscle and its site of attachment. The muscles get tight and the site of attachment gets inflamed. Osteopaths invariably see tennis players and golfers for these conditions but also labourers and others who repetitively overuse their wrists and elbows. Both conditions can be very painful and require treatment or management preferably as soon as symptoms are experienced. The warning signs are worth taking note of and include pain in the forearm and elbow with or without use of the arm i.e even at rest or in bed at night. Failure to address the symptoms in the early stages can lead to a worsening of the symptoms. Minor cases may heal quickly with the appropriate management but more severe cases will need treatment. At Osteopathy Pukekohe we will aim to treatment the condition but also to identify and treat other areas that might also be contributing to the symptoms e.g neck and shoulder dysfunction. If you would like to discuss your symptoms or would like an appointment then please call the Way of Life Health Shop. There is currently an osteopath practicing from the Way of Life Health Shop 6 days a week. All our osteopaths are ACC registered and registered with the Osteopathic Council of New Zealand (OCNZ).

Practice News

During November our Health Promotion Focus is Prostate Awareness. If you are over 50 years old or younger with a family member who has had Prostate cancer or you are having symptoms please make an appointment to discuss this with your doctor. In New Zealand, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, around 3,000 registrations each year and about 600 deaths from prostate cancer each year (based on the statistics from the Ministry of Health 2007 – 2009 which show an average of 3082 registrations and 602 deaths).

Men who develop prostate cancer are mostly over the age of 65. It rarely occurs in men younger than 55. About one in 13 men will develop prostate cancer before the age of 75. In very elderly men, prostate cancer often grows very slowly and may cause no symptoms. Some men are more at risk of getting prostate cancer than others, but the most important risk factor is ageing. Men with

a family history of prostate cancer have a higher risk; that is, if the father, an uncle or a brother has had prostate cancer. Doctors do not know what causes prostate cancer. They do know, however, that the growth of cancer cells in the prostate is stimulated by male hormones, especially testosterone. Most prostate cancer growth is influenced by testosterone. The speed at which prostate cancer grows varies from man to man. In some men the cancer grows very slowly; in other men, it grows more rapidly. A man with slow growing prostate cancer may live for many years and die of other causes, without ever having symptoms of prostate cancer. If the cancer grows too much, however, the prostate usually squeezes the urethra, which it surrounds. Symptoms may then start, such as difficulty in passing urine. As the same symptoms can be caused by other problems, difficulty in passing urine does not always mean that prostate cancer is present.

Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) compliance officers had a foul surprise when a routine inspection led to the discovery of more than 200 rotting snapper. On October 10, MPI compliance officers inspected a recreational fishing vessel in Kawakawa Bay. The fish presented were all of legal size, but upon further inspection, a compliance officer uncovered a fish wrapped up in a tarp and disguised under the floor boards of the boat. A closer inspection revealed a further 40 snapper – including three undersized – hidden under the floor of the boat.

Because of the quantity of fish and the obvious attempt to hide them, the boat was seized by the compliance officers, and taken back to MPI’s secure exhibits shed to be stored for the weekend. When compliance officers arrived at work the following Monday they smelt something fishy – literally. They located the seized boat as the source of the smell, and after using a drill to remove a panel at the front of the boat, 208 rotting snapper were discovered in a compartment under the seat. Local fishing report - with Smudge The fishing seminar I held last month was well attended, thanks to those who turned up, I hope you got something out of it. One lucky guy went home with a new softbait rod and reel as a door prize! Fishing, like the weather, is really starting to warm up. There have been reports of snapper in the 40 to 50cm range turning up from time to time in the harbour and there are plenty of gurnard around. Trevally are starting to feature also, although on my last trip out with club president Karl Sutton, we could only manage gurnard and of course there’s nothing wrong with that. We did get a couple of small snapper but at 28cm we sent them back to grow.

What was notable is that the huge numbers of kahawai appear to have moved on. With the warmer weather please take care of your catch, ice it down to keep your fish at its best. Karl and I were competing in an interclub challenge between Counties and Clevedon, tasked with catching gurnard and trevally. Luckily for us, fellow Counties member Mike Barnett and his crew caught a trevally and some nice snapper from over the coast. I’m pleased to say that Counties won the match 21 – 14. There have been a lot of boats out trying their luck for scallops and although they are thin on the ground they should be in excellent condition about now.

Left: Local boat Aquaholic with a good catch from the west coast in October. Right: Karl Sutton with a gurnard in the interclub challenge.

Reports from the west coast are all good. Snapper in the 5kg to 7kg range are turning up in the deep water (50m to 60m) and although there are plenty of sharks around to keep things a little challenging good catches of snapper are the norm. Be warned though, the Manukau and Waikato bars are no places for novices, contact Coastguard for advice before taking them on. I was concerned to hear that Coastguard were busy with breakdowns over the weekend we were out. They do a great job, please support them! I’ve heard of some great whitebait catches recently, so all round it’s a great time to be out on the water. Enjoy the spring fishing; Smudge.

‘Manic’ day as kids swap Minis

Doctor to run for Surf Lifesaving Waiuku Doctor Mark Eustace is preparing for a major trek at the end of this month as part of the fund raising efforts for a new surf lifesaving clubrooms planned for Karioitahi. The development at Karioitahi is a bold and exciting new concept and those behind it say it will continue the standards set for new innovative Surf life Saving premises in New Zealand, but it is much more. It will be the new home and training facility for many local sport and leisure and interest groups, a purpose design educational facility, a meeting point for local community and the foundation for a strong and prosperous volunteer lifeguard service ongoing.

Prize winners Recent competitions in the Post have seen the winner of the Rixt Botello Herb Book as Terri-Anne Matthews of Pukekohe. The winner of the Pure Indulgence Relaxation Escape Package was Clare S of Pukekohe. Congratulations to both winners.

Phone hunt

Waiuku New World was a scene of manic and frenetic activity last week as the store held its ‘Swap Day’ for the recent mini collectable promotion. Children and parents flocked to the store to try to complete their sets, while one lucky inner, 10-year-old Bianca Nelson (pictured above left), won a rare full boxed set of the collectables from the afternoon event. Bianca is pictured with Daniel (7), and both are students at Glenbrook School.

Waiuku business owner Suzanne Lombardi, of Cavalli Interiors, says she thought she was close to getting her stolen phone back last week when a woman took a phone into a local store for a new Sim Card. Suzanne understands the phone, thought to be an unwanted gift, actually had a number of photos on it, and she believes it may be the one that was brazenly stolen in front of her a couple of weeks ago. She says police are following leads as to the identity of the person who took the Samsung Galaxy phone, and she urges anyone who may think they have inadvertently purchased a stolen phone to get in touch with Waiuku Police, or to drop the phone in to the Post Newspaper. A reward is offered.

On November 23 Dr Mark Eustace is planning to run The Great Cranleigh Kauri Run Ultramarathon, a 70 km trail run from Fletchers Bay to Coromandal township. The run will be sponsored with all funds going towards the costs to build the new facility to help keep beachgoers safe on those hot summer days at the beach. Anyone who would like to sponsor Mark in his epic run can make donations either directly to the Surf Club: Club Bank Details: ASB - 12-30440320181-00 Reference - Ultra marathon or donations may be dropped at The Post Newspaper, Waiuku Health Centre or the Waiuku branch of ASB Bank.

Local young authors win The overall winning tale in a writing competition supported by Barfoot and Thompson, Room 23 and Mysterious Miss P, was written by 12-year-old Grace Michie from Pukekohe Intermediate School. It tells the story of a badly behaved class, a magical teacher, and her little brown pony. The delightful narrative poem features on the cover of the book, accompanied by five other tales: • Procrastination by Kate Fowler from Glen Eden Intermediate School • The Penguin Who Learnt to Fly by Chris Jackman from Northcross Intermediate • A Crab and a Turtle by Carter Tang from St Kentigern Boys’ School • The Dare by Elena Wood from Ramarama School • The Thirsty Sun by Sunny Promtrai from Redoubt North Primary School The six winning tales were chosen out of more than 900 entries from schools across Auckland and Northland.

THANKS - IT WAS A CRACKER! Staff and management of the Post Newspaper would like to formally acknowledge all of those involved in the production of the Blast to the Past event held in Waiuku on Friday night. While there are many, many people who did so much to make the event a success, we would like to pay special mention to Town Centre Manager Sharlene Druyven, and her assistant Vanessa, for the many months of work they spent leading up to the night itself. A huge thanks also has to go to Lex and Karen Mills of the Waiuku New World, whose generous sponsorship enabled a stunning fireworks display to be delivered.

There were volunteers from many organisations who made the day possible, and both the Waiuku Local Board and the Waiuku Business and Development Association are to be congratulated for their foresight in backing a true community event. As a local newspaper, we were not only proud to be involved, but as individuals, we had a great time taking the photos, sharing in the excitement, and creating the fun video for our facebook page. Sharlene and team; you were superb. We congratulate and thank you, and we look forward to the Christmas Parade as another example of a community in action!

Thanks to everyone who made it possible!

Manukau, Karaka, reboot cricket campaigns

44th Annual Golf Day

The move to grass pitches had a renaissance effect on the Duthie Cup. Two teams, Manukau and Karaka, rebooted their campaigns by putting their first wins of the season on the slate. This was at the expense of Pukekohe-Metro and Waiuku respectively. Weymouth won the argument in the third fixture. They defeated Papakura in a game that started controversially. Surely it’s not a new smartphone app? All three winning teams used the same template. Batting first all three based their innings on an opening batsman century, all three centurions carried their bats and they were all maiden CMCA premiership century makers. For those not used to the strange world of cricket parlance, the term “carrying your bat” means the batsman opened the innings and was unbeaten at the end of it. Karaka built their total on a Daniel Power (101*) ton. Manukau relied on Cameron Fletcher (117*) and Weymouth’s rock was Liam Hunia (103*). With the victories going to the three bottom-half teams in the championship and both Papakura

and Pukekohe losing their unbeaten records the point’s board has tightened up. The Duthie Cup will now take a short holiday. With Fergus Hickey Rose bowl starting next weekend the club the premiership will change format to T20 mode for one weekend. Waiuku v Karaka (Massey Park, Waiuku) A notable feature of this match was that one of the umpires was on debut. Local sporting administrator, Hugo Fourie, who last umpired premier cricket back in the South African Republic, has been fast tracked back into action and stood in the match, his first official appointment. Waiuku welcomed back fast bowler Adam Flegg for his first outing this season. Daniel Power (101*) has signposted a century for quite some time. His innings was the centrepiece of Karaka’s 226/6. Power reached three figures in 148 balls and with three balls left in the innings. Karaka built partnerships around Power, the best of them the unbeaten 60-run seventh wicket stand with Michael Schofield (35*). Bayden Morey (2/41) and Simon Gardiner (2/37) picked up two wickets each but it’s the schoolboy Ben Naylor (1/43) who continues to catch

the eye in the Waiuku bowling attack Naylor ended up with good numbers. However, the decision to switch ends for his last over was about as successful as trying to put the toothpaste back in the toothpaste tube. Seventeen of the runs conceded by Naylor’s came off his last over. Flegg opened the batting for Waiuku and helped them make a reasonable start going to drinks at 67/4. They struggled after drinks and were eventually stopped in the 42nd over on 136. Karaka’s slower bowlers showed to advantage. Clayton Franks (3/20), Hayden Wark (2/16) and Nav Sran (2/22) finished with the best figures. Manukau v Pukekohe-Metro (War Memorial Park, Manurewa) The top versus bottom clash played on a very good wicket at War Memorial Park turned out to be a run feast with exactly 510 runs scored on the day. Dylan Fearon made early inroads for Pukekohe-Metro when he had Shaleen Singh caught for four in Fearon’s second over. Knowing that Manukau was desperate for a win Pukekohe was almost sympathetic. They didn’t bowl well and their fielding hasn’t yet met their high standards.

That doesn’t detract from Manukau’s batting. Cameron Fletcher (117 *) is a professional cricketer and knows how to deal with most bowling be it good, bad or somewhere in between. The joint venture between Fletcher and Tom Urry (65 *) put on 166 runs for the fourth wicket and was unbeaten at the compulsory close of innings. It was a good batting effort by Manukau who stopped the counter at 267/3. Ash Vodnala was the first Pukekohe batsman to be outbound after what was a cut and paste of his removal a week earlier. Pukekohe, with an enormous alumni that it calls upon in times of need, tempted Matt Wilson back for a game. The South Auckland policeman, playing his first premier game for four years, reached 50 just before tea. Wilson’s successful return to cricket was over just after tea. Simon Lal has found his feet in the Puke-Metro middle order. He top scored with 76. Although they got close Pukekohe was bowled out as were all teams batting second on the day. Jarod Halliday, preparing for age group representative cricket next month, took four wickets.

Pick your best umpire and be in to win

Specsavers and New Zealand Cricket are launching a nationwide competition today in search of ‘Specsavers’ Favourite Kiwi Cricket Umpire’. Kiwis’ favourite summer sport officials can feel confident when making the tough calls on the pitch this season, as for the third year in a row, Specsavers has partnered with New Zealand’s domestic umpires. Auckland Aces Captain, Gareth Hopkins, says, “Cricket needs umpires and it’s important that players and fans acknowledge the contribution they make to our game. “This competition Specsavers is running is a great way to honour umpires’ commitment to cricket.” The competition calls for people to nominate their favourite local amateur cricket umpire and will run from today through to 13 January 2014. Six finalists will be selected from around the country and from this group the national winner will be announced. A range of exciting prizes are up for grabs including tickets to this summer’s International ANZ Series featuring the Blackcaps against India, $1,000

spending money and a oneon-one training with a top New Zealand umpire. Those who nominate someone will also be in the draw to win a voucher for two pairs of Specsavers glasses, including prescription sunglasses. New Zealand international cricket umpire and ICC Emirates Elite Panel Umpire, Tony Hill, says, “I know first-hand the time and energy that goes into being a local cricket umpire; it’s an amazing privilege to be involved with the young cricketers that are coming through the ranks. “This competition is all about recognising and rewarding those umpires who generously dedicate hours of their time, in their community; the mentors in the background inspiring and motivating our budding future cricket stars. “I am looking forward to receiving a mountain of entries from people around the country who want to nominate their most deserving cricket umpire.” Communities are encouraged to nominate their favourite local umpire by visiting www.specsavers.co.nz/favouriteumpire/. Entries close 13 January 2014.
