8 11 Eyes on the prize
Waiuku’s Kennedy Anderson, a Year 12 Waiuku student from ACG Strathallan, has received first place in the photography section of the Young Designers Awards in Christchurch. Kennedy, pictured right, won for this evocative image of his sister Brierley. “Kennedy is a highly creative photographer who isn’t afraid to think outside the box and therefore produces work of the highest quality. His understanding of light and composition is outstanding leading to some exceptional imagery,” says Jo Palmer, teacher of Photography at ACG Strathallan. Two other students from ACG Strathallan also received first places. Year 13 Logan Moffat received a first for his painting, while Year 11 student Eva Dooley was equal first in the 2D Drawing and Painting, Intermediate section.
Council halts water dumping over ‘public perception’ Auckland Council says it has halted local dumping of wastewater from catch pits in the Pukekohe area over perceptions from the public that contaminants were being dumped on local properties. That concern was heightened after laboratory testing of the Rowles Road area by Ian McDougall, chair of the Pukekohe Citizens and Ratepayers Association, showed high levels of heavy metals. Council however, said the contaminant level of the water dumped was very low, and in fact was less than that of runoff from nearby market gardens, a statement which angered local market gardeners.
ou y K THAN LEX
Despite assurances that the dumped water is safe, Council has now stopped dumping in Pukekohe, and says the water is now being disposed at the nearest approved location at East Tamaki. In order to ensure that efficiencies within existing budgets can continue to be achieved, Auckland Council is investigating alternate controlled decant sites closer to Rowles Rd. Council adds it is an on-going challenge to meet funding caps whilst looking after environmental and community aspirations. Auckland Council’s Stormwater unit took over the Southern catch pit cleaning two years ago. As part of a review of the pro-
gramme a significant opportunity was identified to increase the number of catch pits being cleaned on a daily basis and efficiency of contaminant removal (amount of material removed). By decanting the liquid component of the material removed from the catch pits the number of truck movements and distance travelled to disposal points was significantly reduced. This resulted in the average volume of contaminated sediment removed under the southern contract increasing from 50 tonnes per annum, to 165 tonnes – a 330 per cent increase.
“This means that through this initiative an additional 115 tonnes of sediment that would otherwise have entered our waterways is removed,” Council said. Auckland Council granted permission to the contractor doing the Southern catch pit cleaning programme, to allow the disposal of decant water from the catch pit cleaning to a road drain at Rowles Rd. Council adds that the Rowles Rd site, road drain, was chosen due its immediate upstream proximity to a Stormwater treatment device, resulting in high-levels of treatment that the decant water would receive before discharge to the natural receiving environment.

As I wandered around in the Waiuku rain on Sunday night taking photographs at the Blast to the Past, one of the things that struck me was the amount of people doing things to support their community. Lions Club members were sizzling sausages, students and parents were fund raising for camp trips and activities, volunteers of all ages were handling crowd control and helping with set-up and clean-up. We take for granted so many of the things we have available in our region, things that only happen because someone wants to ‘give something back’. I talked to a local contractor last week, once a top sportsman in his youth, who was helping with a fund-raising house renovation project. He said he enjoyed having sport available to him as a youngster and now it was time to give something back. I was at Bill Renall’s funeral yesterday, a funeral attended by hundreds who have done their bit to help their community. Six years ago I had a very enjoyable afternoon with Bill interviewing him for a feature on the local fire brigade. I asked him what made him want to make those sacrifices to be a volunteer in the brigade. It was in 1953, he said, and his mate was in the brigade and asked him to join. Bill asked him why, and his mate said “you live here, you built a house here, don’t you think you should give something back to the town?” Of course, as Bill laughed, his mate left the brigade a year later, and Bill was still there six decades on. But the question is still valid. If you live here, what can you do to ‘give something back’ and make Franklin the better for it?
Evolution should not be decried I am perturbed by your inaccurate Maranatha advertisement decrying evolution which begs the question, is this a Charter School re- writing the curriculum. The writer appears to be ignorant of fact, has not read Jerry Coyne Professor of Biology and author of Why Evolution is True, and never watches The Atheist Experience as well as not being conversant with the fossil record or science in general. All these (and more) are available in Waiuku library. How one can make these assertions on evolution and make no mention of DNA eludes me.

Firefighters and friends pay tribute to Bill Renall Firefighters and emergency services personnel joined family and friends of the late Bill Renall yesterday as his life was celebrated at St Andrew’s Centre in Waiuku. Bill served 61 years with the Waiuku Volunteer Fire Brigade, including as Chief Fire Officer and was awarded a double Gold Star, (50 years of service), and a Queens Service Medal for his contribution to the town. In a formal fire service tribute, Bill was brought to the fire station one last time, and transferred from a hearse to an old engine loaned by the Pukekohe Brigade. Perhaps in a signal from the gods to mark the fact that the brigade members travel in all weathers,
as Bill was taken from the station to his home, and then to the church, the rain pelted down. After a service in which there were many anecdotes about his time with the brigade, and a tribute from his family, the weather changed to brilliant sunshine as a guard of honour was formed and the street closed. As the 1936 Ford Fire Truck left the church, the Waiuku siren sounded Bill’s last call. In lieu of flowers, family members asked that donations be made toward the restoration of an old fire truck for Waiuku, one of Bill’s last projects. Donations can be made by contacting the Waiuku Volunteer Fire Brigade or Geoff McClay Panelbeaters.

Great Grocery Grabbers!
Dogs seized after teen attacked Two dogs seized by Waikato District Council following a serious attack at an Aka Aka property last Tuesday night were impounded while staff and family discuss the future of the five-year-old male mastiff involved. General Manager Customer Support, Sue Duignan says “Both dogs are registered to a Whangarei address but were being cared for at the Waiuku property when the attack occurred. Because of this there are a number of scenarios we need to work through with the victim’s family and the dogs’ owner. “Understandably this is a difficult time for everyone involved but we’re pleased to learn the victim of this attack has come through surgery well, her recovery looks positive.” The incident involved one of two dogs at the property, which was said to have attacked a 13 year old girl residing at the address at around midnight on Tuesday, As a result, the girl sustained serious facial and cranial puncture wounds and underwent surgery on the morning of the attack. Counties Manukau Police and Waikato District Council staff attended the incident.

Delighted winners Kim Voigt and Mona Francis with Lex Mills and their trolley load of goodies from Sunday’s grocery grab at Waiuku New World. Most people’s eyes would bulge after being told their grocery shop was almost $2500, but for one Waiuku customer on Sunday, the biggest problem was fitting the shopping into her car. Kim Voigt, together with her 77 year old mum, Mona Francis gathered up $2,423.32 worth of groceries at Waiuku New World. This was the prize Russell and Kim Voigt won when they attended a Sandspit Road School fund raising event earlier in the year. Lex Mills, the owner at New World, sponsored a three-minute Grocery Grab and the Voigt family won the auction. Kim had three minutes to race around the store grabbing anything she could. Grab she did: cooking oils, gourmet cheeses, cleaning products, batteries and much more. Lex kindly invited Kim’s mum, Mona (one of his favourite customers!) to assist with
the grocery grab. Mona, well turned out in her sneakers, steered the trolley with great aplomb and kept up with the hectic pace. Kim commented, “I decided to wear sensible shoes, tried to get a range of items and not buckle under the pressure of a ticking clock. Lex and his enthusiastic staff were extremely supportive and encouraging and we were delighted to have had the opportunity of doing the grocery grab on Lex’s last day as owner at Waiuku New World. Kim said she spent an average of $300 - $400 a week at New World, so yesterday’s haul was a welcome bonus. ‘ She is planning to share some of the bounty with family and friends. Kim added that both Lex and Karen Mills have made significant contribution to Waiuku and will be remembered for their generosity and warmhearted community spirit.

Creationist or Evolutionist, Part 2 Local group delighted with donation Upon this I will ask you a question: How long after he spoke, before things were? How much time passed after he spoke, before the thing was? No time. When God by speaking the word, for this one he said, “Let there be light.” Now how much time passed between the words, “Let there be light,” and the time when the light came? I want to understand this matter aright so that you can find out whether you are an evolutionist or a creationist. All right. Then the man who allows that any time at all passed between God’s speaking and the appearing of the thing, is an evolutionist. If he makes it countless ages upon countless ages, he is simply more of an evolutionist than the one who thinks it took a day; he is the same thing, but more of it. Next, God said, “Let there be light.” And it was so. “Let there be a firmament.” And it was so. “Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind,” it was so. When he spoke, it was always so. That is creation. You see, then, that it is perfectly logical and reasonable enough too, for the evolutionist to set aside the word of God and have no faith in it, for evolution itself is antagonistic to creation. So when Jesus was here, He said, “The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit and they are life.” The words that Jesus spoke are the words of God. They are imbued with the life of God. They are eternal life, they abide forever, and in them is the creative energy to produce the thing spoken. You remember that after the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus came down, and there met him a centurion, saying, “My servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented. Jesus said unto him, “I will come and heal him.” The centurion said, “I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof, but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.” Jesus turned to those standing about and said, “I have not found so great faith, no not in Israel.” There was the word of God, which said, “It shall be accomplished that which I please.” It was spoken thus of the creative power. And though they professed to recognize the creative energy of the word of God, yet in their own lives they left that all out. They were not made new creatures; no new life was formed within them; the thing was not accomplished by the power of God; it was all of themselves; and so far were they from believing in creation that they rejected the creator and crucified him out of the world. That is what evolution always does, for do not forget that “evolution is directly antagonistic to creation.” Very well, I will come and heal your servant. O no my Lord, you do not need to come. “Speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.” Jesus replied, “As thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant has healed.” When that word went forth, “so be it done unto thee,” how long before their man was healed? Twenty years? No. Didn’t he have to go through the ups and downs before he was certainly healed? Honest, now? No, No! When the word was spoken, the word did the thing that was spoken, and it did it at once. Another day Jesus was walking along and a leper some distance from him saw and recognized him. He said to Jesus, “If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.” Jesus stopped and said, “I will; be though clean. And as soon as he had spoken, immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed.” Mark 1:41-42. We are not allowed to put a moment of time between speaking of the word and the accomplished fact: “Immediately” the leper was cleansed. Jesus said to a certain person, “Thy sins are forgiven.” How long before it was so? There was no length of time whatever between the word “forgiven” and the thing. The same word, “Thy sins are forgiven,” is spoken to you today. Why do you let any time pass between this word, which is spoken to you and the accomplishment of the thing? Are you going to stop being an evolutionist and become creationists? From what I have read, you see that whoever lets any time pass between the word spoke and the thing done, is an evolutionist. The word of God to you is, Man, “thy sins are forgiven thee.” Woman “thy sins are forgiven thee.” “Thy sins are forgiven thee”-present tense, with an emphasis.
“Thy sins are forgiven.” I thank God this is so, because the creative energy is in that word “forgiven” to take away all sin and create the man a new creature. I believe in creation. Do you really believe in the creative energy that is in the word “forgiven” spoken to you? Many people have been longing and longing for a clean heart. But there stands the word, “Create in me a clean heart.” A clean heart comes from creation and by no other means; and that creation is wrought by the word of God. For he says, “A new heart also will I give you and a new spirit will I put within you.” It speaks to you a new heart. When you allow any time to pass between the word spoken and the fulfilment of that thing in your experience, then you are an evolutionist. The word says, “Be clean.” He said back yonder, “Let there be light, and there was light.” He said to the leper, “Be thou clean,” and “immediately” he was clean. He says now to you, “Be clean,” and you are instantly. Then for your soul’s sake put yourself upon that creative word. Recognize the creative energy in the word of God which comes to you in the Bible, for this word of God in the Bible is the same here to you today that it was when it spoke into space the worlds on high and brought light out of darkness and cleansing to the leper. That word spoken to you today, if received, creates you new in Christ Jesus. That word, spoken today to you afflicted with the leprosy of sin, if received, immediately cleanses you. Just let it. How shall I be clean? By the creative energy of that word, “Be ye clean.” Therefore it is written, “Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.” John 15:3. When you read the word, receive the word, and think upon the word, what is it to you all the time? The creative energy is in you producing the things which the word speaks, and you are living in the very presence of the power of creation. Creation is going on in your life. God is creating in you righteousness, holiness, truth, faithfulness-every good and gracious thing. In the second chapter of Ephesians, eighth to tenth verses, we read, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it is] the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” Do you want to walk in good works? It can be done only by being created in Jesus Christ unto good works. Stop trying. Look to the Creator and receive his creative word. “Let the word of God dwell in you richly,” then those good works will appear; you will be a Christian. Then, because you live with the Creator and are in the presence of the creative energy, you will have that pleasant, quiet peace and genuine strength and building up that which belongs to a Christian. When he tells you that “we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them,” then recognize the Creator, recognize only the good works that are created in you, paying no attention whatever to any work that is not created there, because there is nothing good but what is created by the Lord. Now you were created new in Christ Jesus. He says so. Thank him that it is so. What! Will you be an evolutionist on that verse? That is the present tense, “We are his workmanship.” We are, created in Christ Jesus unto good works. Are you? The word is spoken. It is the creative word. How much time are you going to allow between that word of God and your being created new? Of the creation in the beginning, you said that any man who allows even a minute to pass between the word and the thing is an evolutionist. What are you now as to this word of God, which creates men in Christ Jesus unto good works? Are you an evolutionist here? Come, let us all be creationists.

The New Zealand Walking Access Commission is now accepting applications for the third round of its 20142015 Enhanced Access Fund programme. The fund supports projects that provide free, certain, enduring and practical outdoor access for the public throughout the country. Commission Chief Executive Mark Neeson said a total of $76,000 was available across four funding rounds this financial year, with a maximum of $25,000 available to any one project.
“Our highest priority will be initiatives that obtain new access and projects such as the installation of signs that inform the public about access opportunities.” Projects that develop and improve walking access through the installation of gates, stiles and fences, creation of engineering reports, or support of community walking access initiatives are also eligible for funding, he said. Applications are assessed on the quality of the project plan, the ability of the pro-

A madcap afternoon of fun and entertainment at a Waiuku bar resulted in a huge boost to the Franklin Breast Cancer Support Group last week. Barb’s Bar held a Pink Ribbon fund raising event which featured a best-dressed bra, facepainting and raffles and the bar even raffled off its chef for an event. The upshot of the day saw over $1600 raised for the local support group, and last week the Support Group’s co-ordinator Donna Burcham received the cheque from owner Barb Wilkinson and manager Debbie Groot. ‘Use it or lose it’ call as rain hits Waiuku show
Storms and squalls played havoc with preparations for Waiuku’s Blast to the Past festival last weekend, but organisers pressed ahead anyway, knowing that there were no further options for postponements. In the end, an estimated 7,000 people thronged into the heart of Waiuku on Sunday evening, the event having been postponed since the day before when high winds and lashing rain would have prevented any fireworks at all. Waiuku Town Centre manager Sharlene Druyven says the stall holders were fantastic, coping with the 24-hour delay, and then setting up even as the weather deteriorated again on Sunday afternoon. Many stall holders still enjoyed a good day’s trading, despite smaller crowds, with one trader saying Waiuku people were incredible in that they supported local events regardless of the conditions. Entertainment including a Cher imper-
sonator, fire-eating, a local live band and dancers from Groove-it Dance crews entertained the crowd prior to the scheduled 9pm fireworks show. But just as the throngs were heading to the Waiuku estuary, the rain and wind struck again, and it became a case of ‘use it or lose it.’ The commencement of the show was hurriedly brought forward, as rain fell on the fireworks, and parts of the show were unable to be completed due to saturated pyrotechnics. As Sharlene said however, it was either go ahead with what was still dry, or cancel the event completely, and those who braved the weather were pleased with the decision. Sharlene says she is grateful for the support of a number of organisations who have made this event possible, particularly Top Hat Magic, Waiuku New World, the Franklin Local Board and the Waiuku Business and Development Association. • Photos from Blast to the Past next page.
‘Oarsome’ night for RAYD Waiuku charity group RAYD, (Rugby and Youth Development), had a special guest at their thank-you evening after completing their latest project. The group, which has completed renovating a View Road property as part of their fund raising efforts hosted trans-ocean rower Tara Remington, who spoke of her record-breaking achievements. Tara’s presentation highlighted some of the struggles she and race partner Angela Madsen experienced rowing across the Pacific - a feat which saw Tara hold a number of world records. Tara’s 4000 km odyssey from California to Hawaii was to raise money for New Zealand girl Charlotte Cleverley-Bisman. Charlotte lost her arms and legs to meningitis as a baby in 2004. Now a tenyear-old, she needs on-going assistance with prosthetic limbs as she grows. Tara first met Charlotte while she was preparing for
her first ocean row - across the Atlantic in 2007, and has dedicated her athletic achievements to the young girl since then. It was a special evening in many ways, as the chairman of RAYD, Brian Palmer, was the owner of Waiuku’s Wolf and Beaver Pub, (now Barb’s Bar), and Tara’s first major fund-raising event for that 2007 row was a quiz night at Brian’s pub. In honour of the row, Tara later presented an oar from the boat to the pub.
At the RAYD function the oar was presented to the Waiuku Yacht Club, current owner of Barb’s, Barbara Wilkinson being involved for the presentation. Tara, a professional teaching fellow at the University of Auckland’s Faculty of Education, had one further surprise coming - after her speech she was presented with a cheque for $500 from RAYD to go toward funding new prosthetic devices for Charlotte.

Volunteers rack up 2650 hours to support their community At Waiuku Search and Rescue’s annual general meeting last Tuesday evening, president Jeff Millen paid tribute to the 23 active members and those behind the scenes who keep the crews afloat. The group has had a very successful year, launching a recruitment drive and a new training scheme which has seen all new members now operational crew with many of them already involved in Coastguard callouts. Jeff said Waiuku’s callout ratio is relatively high in comparison to the numbers living in the area, and said the crews can be justifiably proud of the service they have put in throughout the past year. That service includes 28 call outs, assisting 56 people, and amassing 2650 hours of volunteer time to help the region. These hours have included around 1000 hours of training and 740 hours of
fund raising, public education and maintenance. The group was awarded Coastguard’s Community Relations Activity of the Year award from Coastguard Northern Region, and then was surprised and delighted to find they had won the overall title for the same
award at a national level. Among the highlights of the evening was the presentation to Peter Dodd a certificate in recognition for his long standing service to Coastguard and people of Franklin over 20 years. Pictured above is Peter receiving his award from Jeff.

Auckland buyers boosting Waiuku property values On the back of a property boom in Auckland and plans for massive growth in Franklin’s population, Waiuku’s house prices are rising faster than most people realise, according to Barfoot & Thompson Waiuku agent Alrich Steer. Alrich, better known locally as Al, says the same things that brought him and his family to Waiuku more than a decade ago are driving property values in the rural community. “I love the town for everything it offers; the community feel, the friendly people, and the rural charm of Franklin”, Al says. “With roading improvements and a better train service from Pukekohe making commuting more of an option, it’s no wonder we are seeing so much interest in the area from out of the region.” Al says the increasing “The demand is based on a combination of facmarket is tors - not only the moving so lifestyle, but also the current price fast that the difference between Franklin ‘traditional’ price and Auckland. for a family home “Pukekohe in the Waiuku area saw the first big price rises could be too low a few years ago, and that market by thousands has been steadily of dollars in building, but now that cycle is moving just a few further afield to the Waiuku region. While weeks!” we probably won’t see the same sudden and dramatic spike as we saw in Pukekohe, we are still seeing significant value increases. “It’s a trend that I can’t see changing in the future either - Auckland is continuing to spread and Waiuku is in their sights.” That price increase, which has seen many properties experience significant rises in value in the last few years, is one which is not only surprising local homeowners, but can also catch real estate agents unawares. “The market is moving so fast that the ‘traditional’ price for a family home in
Waiuku may be too low by several thousand dollars in just a few weeks!” There is particular interest in the fourbedroom family home in the $400,000 to $500,000 bracket, a sector which means Auckland residents can cash up, then secure a Franklin property in the expectation of not only a better lifestyle for their family, but also substantial capital gains over the next three to five years. “But there’s no such thing as the ‘average’ home in this area,” Al points out. “We have sold houses in the local area over the $700,000 and $800,000 brackets, and we have a number of enquiries for homes at the start-point of the market from potential first-home buyers.” In terms of current market value of your property, Al says it makes sense to get an appraisal from a few agents, but cautions against agents trying to ‘buy your listing’. “Just because someone gives you a higher appraisal doesn’t mean that your agent will sell the property for that price. “The advantage we have is that our office of 12 real estate professionals in Waiuku will discuss values and balance them against the properties we have sold recently,” Al notes. “We also have more than 1400 salespeople with Barfoot & Thompson which means when we list a property that every one of those agents can see it, so if we have someone from Onehunga looking for a local property, our Waiuku listings will be at their fingertips,” he adds. “There’s probably never been a better time to get an indication of your property’s value. If you are looking to take that next step up the property ladder within the Waiuku or Franklin region, now would be the time to do it. “Waiuku is a wonderful area to live, and Auckland has already found out about it! “Give me a call and I’m happy to chat with you about a no-obligation appraisal so you can plan your lifestyle, and your investment, with confidence.”

Million dollar sales lift average prices Signs that prices and sales activity in the Auckland residential housing market will lift following the Election are evident in September’s sales figures. “September’s average house sales price at $738,876 is the highest on record,” said Peter Thompson, Managing Director, Barfoot & Thompson. “It is $13,000 up on the previous highest average price established in March this year, and up 3.8 percent on the previous month’s average price. “However, the sales data shows the high average price was the result of a relatively modest number of homes being sold, of which a high number sold for in excess of $1 million. “Of the 959 homes sold, 164 or 17.1 per-

cent were for in excess of $1 million. “Properties in the higher price range are less affected by the uncertainties that exist during a run in to a General Election, and with such a high number of sales at the high end, the average price has lifted more than might be the case in a normal month’s trading. By contrast, September’s median price at $635,000, is up less than 1 percent on that for August, and is more in line with the median price over the past four months. “Without doubt, the election’s influence can be seen in September’s sales numbers. “However, what can also be seen in the month’s figures is that housing activity was starting to lift during September, and normal spring trading can be expected now the election is behind us.

Over 100 groups on show at Expo! The Franklin Integration Project Group has met on ten occasions to plan Franklin’s ninth annual Positive Ageing Expo which is to be held on this Friday between 9.30 and 3.00 in the Pukekohe Indian Association Hall on Ward Street, Pukekohe. The Project Group has secured the involvement of most of the groups, individuals, and service organisations that took part in the successful 2013 Expo, plus ten new ones to inform and entertain. In total there are over 100 of them waiting to greet and help visitors on the day. Arguably, this is one of the biggest events of its kind in New Zealand with features unique to Franklin. The Franklin Integration Project is very grateful to the Auckland Council and the Franklin Local Board for the grant of $7000 from the Local Board Event Fund. The Project Group is a small Chari-
table Trust, totally dependent upon grants and donations to stage the Expo and therefore support of this magnitude is hugely important and appreciated. As in previous years, admission is totally free and there will be free refreshments available throughout the day courtesy of those wonderful RSA ladies. There will even be free draws for prizes and surprise gifts. We will have available free transport for those unable to get to the Expo by other means and this will be provided by Driving Miss Daisy. If you live in Franklin and have no other means of transport, call them on 2391377 to discuss how they may be able to help you. So, if you are an older person, know an older person,

THE POST NEWSPAPER, OCTOBER 7, 2014
PROPERTY Showerdome winner The Post Newspaper had a massive response to our Win a Showerdome competition held recently. The benefits of the Showerdome for potential savings for homeowners were clearly illustrated with virtually every entrant pointing out how much money a household could save. Of the correct entries, the winner was drawn as Mat Konamalai of Pukekohe. Congratulations!
Consents up New building consent numbers are positive, but Certified Builders says the shortage of skilled trades people continues to be an issue in some areas. The trend for the number of new dwellings consented is at its highest level since August 2007. While the rate of growth is slowing somewhat, the trend for new dwellings has more than doubled since the series low in March 2011, meaning demand for builders is strong. They are concerned though, over unqualified builders filling the vacuum and potentially compromising the quality of new housing, which could reflect badly on the building industry as a whole.
MATTERS
Rent rises expected as landlords face costs Although the majority of Auckland landlords intend to increase rents in the coming 12 months, the increases will not be sufficient to compensate them for the higher outgoings they will be facing. “While two thirds of landlords are intending to increase their rents, by far the majority see that rent rise being 5 percent or less,” said Barfoot & Thompson Director, Kiri Barfoot. “With the current average rent for a 3-bedroom home being $472, that represents a maximum increase of $24 a week.” Barfoot & Thompson’s bi-annual landlord survey revealed that 82 percent of its landlords expect to pay even higher mortgage interest rates in the coming 12 months. “It means that the majority of landlords are prepared to accept lower returns. “Based on an average sales price for a 3-bedroom home of $677,000 and an average rent of $472, landlords are currently receiving a return of 3.63%. “If landlords follow through with their stated intentions, the rate of return in the coming 12 months will be even lower,” Kiri said.
“They are already facing higher outgoings in the form of increases from Council rates, mortgage borrowing costs and insurance, and anticipate even further increases in mortgage rates within the next 12 months. “Given the increased costs they have to meet, there is justification for rents to increase beyond 5 percent, but less than 20 percent of landlords intend doing this. “In many instances, the decision to hold or only marginally increase rents will be based on landlords acknowledging and rewarding good tenants. “Being a landlord is a medium to long term investment decision, and landlords put a great deal of value in the long-term retention of good tenants.” In the survey, two thirds of existing landlords indicated they were not intending to increase their portfolio’s size in the next 12 months, while an additional 6 percent had plans to decrease their holdings. “Among existing landlords, in a market where property prices are increasing, and costs are rising, there is not a great appetite to buy more property.” 85 percent of respondents expected the value of their portfolio to increase in the coming 12 months. Having fought with my weight since having children I can empathize with others who wage WAR!
• RADICAL FITNESS: POWER • RADICAL FITNESS: X-55 • GYMSTICKS: AQUA I joined FSSF to do classes (more motivation) when I was MADE to work. I was encouraged to attend workshops to become a class instructor with Radical Fitness attaining X-55 and Power Certification. Three years of teaching classes, and Loving It! l injured my knee, which prevented me ‘working out’. It was suggested I retrain in Aqua Aerobics.
“YEAH I FOUND MY NICHE!” I LOVE TAKING CLASS, THE PEOPLE AND THE CAMARADERIE, I AM IN AWE OF THE PEOPLE I GET TO WORK WITH!
We all age a little bit every day and like it or not, we can’t do anything about it. However, several lifestyle choices can help to slow down the effects of ageing. Here are ten examples: 1. Stop smoking: cigarettes reduce a smoker’s life expectancy by about four years, not to mention the ageing effects on skin, hair, and teeth. 2. Get sufficient sleep: aim to sleep eight hours a day. Not getting enough sleep is harmful to the skin and can cause unhealthy weight gain and a grim outlook. 3. Use your memory: don’t forget that the brain is a muscle. Give it some exercise with word games, puzzles, and stimulating discussion and readings. 4. Stay active: it’s proven that exercising for 30 minutes a day improves health. Do it every day, if possible. 5. Fill up on antioxidants: colourful fruits and vegetables are full of these compounds that protect the body’s cells and help boost the immune system. 6. Reduce your sugar intake: sugars promote weight gain and accelerate the ageing of the skin. There is also some evidence that they compromise the immune system. 7. Increase your calcium intake: calcium is essential for healthy skin and bones. 8. Manage your stress: stress makes you look older, so aim for a balanced lifestyle through yoga, meditation, exercise, and rest. 9. Protect yourself from the sun: sun is the most important factor in ageing skin and one of the main causes of skin cancer. 10. Drink a lot: good hydration is vital for the body’s organs and for healthy looking skin.

THE POST NEWSPAPER, OCTOBER 7, 2014
By Gina Scott Dip. Hom NZ Gina Scott has been practising homeopathy within the family health arena for many years and is especially passionate about children’s and women’s health issues. The local mother of two uses her expertise to concentrate on issues such as general childhood illnesses eg; ear infections, coughs, colds etc., behavioural and learning difficulties, allergies and intolerances, hormonal imbalances, pregnancy and childbirth, emotional trauma. “I aim to work closely with my patients and empower mothers and women to have confidence in treating themselves and their families for common conditions in conjunction with continuing treatment and support from myself throughout their journey to health.” Parents must learn to trust the wisdom of the body. For example, fevers are a response to disease, not diseases in themselves. It is not necessary or desirable to suppress most
fevers. Instead, it is a good idea to know what is causing the fever (have the disease diagnosed – ie; tonsillitis) but then to treat the patient homoeopathically. For the vast majority of childhood illnesses associated with fevers, the patient can be treated homoeopathically with confidence. Children with emotional and behaviour problems often respond dramatically to homoeopathic care. In fact, most of the time, the first change a homoeopathic practitioner looks for in children is a positive change in behaviour, even though their main complaint may be something completely different. Homoeopathy may be an effective treatment for many other childhood complaints such as sleep problems, bedwetting, digestive complaints, developmental delays, learning difficulties, allergies, hayfever, asthma, eczema to name a few. Homoeopathy is safe for all ages from newborn to old age. Children respond well to homoeopathy, and, like pregnant women, are in a dynamic, changing state, which is probably why they respond so well to homoeopathic remedies. “Homeopathy may treat any condition for which you would see your GP. It is a natural, safe and effective form of medicine for pregnancy, babies and children of all ages, and can safely be used in conjunction with conventional medicines and treatments,” she says. If you would like to know more, or to make an appointment, please contact Way of Life Health Shop to book an appointment on 2387806.

(Chinese MeteriaMedica), Cert (Chinese Massage Andy Ma, BSc(Chinese Meteria Medica), Cert (Chinese Massage). From 2002 I started to be involved in traditional Chinese medicine and Tui Na/Chinese Massage. Tui Na/Chinese Massage is an Oriental Bodywork Therapy that has been used in China for 4000 years. A typical session of Tui Na/ Chinese Massage may vary from thirty minutes to an hour. The session timings may vary depending on the patient’s needs and condition. The best part of the therapy is that it relaxes as well as energizes the person. Because Tui Na/ Chinese Massage does not simply work on the muscles, bones, and joints. It works with the energy of the body at a deeper level. As the
The main benefit of Tui Na/ Chinese Massage is that it focuses on the specific problem, whether it is an acute or a chronic pain associated with the muscles, joints or a skeletal system. This technique is very beneficial in reducing the pain of neck, shoulders, hips, back, arms, thighs, legs and ankle disorders. It is a very effective therapy for arthritis, pain, sciatica and muscle spasms. Other benefits of this therapy include alleviation of the stress related disorders like anxiety, depression, headaches (including migraines), insomnia, constipation and other disorders related to digestive, respiratory and reproductive systems. As with other styles of Oriental bodywork, Tui Na/Chinese Massage is designed to prevent problems, not just correct them. By keeping the body’s energy in balance, health is maintained. This is true not just for physical health, but for mental and emotional well-being as well. I am running a massage practice from the Way of Life Health shop on Mondays and Thursdays. I welcome you to just come into the shop or call for an appointment 09 2387806.

Often when we experience pain we’re looking for a quick fix, a solution in 20 - 30 mins (maximum!). A ‘click’ here and there, a stretch and all sorted. Is it really that simple? Quick fixes usually don’t really alleviate pain in the medium to long term. Short term relief can often be obtained from a manipulation (audible click), a muscle stretch, a soft tissue release etc. What needs to be asked though is why did the pain happen in the first place and what can be done to prevent a recurrence. Recurring pain often gets worse with each occurrence as well as putting excess strain on the body thereby weakening the body. This makes a recurrence of the symp-

toms all the more likely. Our ultimate goal at Osteopathy Pukekohe is to identify the source of the pain (joint, muscle, ligament etc) and the underlying cause (poor posture, repetitive strain, muscle imbalance, structural deformity, overstrain etc.). The source and the cause are then both addressed to achieve medium to long term pain relief. During a first visit/consultation to Osteopathy Pukekohe a comprehensive postural assessment is undertaken, work, home and play activities are discussed and a full medical history (past and present) is taken in great detail. From this information the osteopath has an idea about what might have caused the problem and the physical examination subsequently undertaken will identify the tissues (joints, muscles, ligaments) involved. If you experience pain, particularly pain that is recurring then don’t be too hasty to look for that ‘quick fix’. Take the time and justify the cost of finding out why the pain is happening, why is it not going away and what can be done about it. We’re here to help you. There is currently an osteopath practising at the Way of Life Health Shop 6 days a week (Monday - Saturday). All our osteopaths are ACC registered and registered with the Osteopathic Council of New Zealand (OCNZ).

Gilmour’s passion for community will be missed Comedian turned politician Ewen Gilmour, who was chair of the Onewhero-Tuakau Community Board, passed away of natural causes in the comfort of his own home on October 3, at the age of 51. Ewen Gilmour was an award-winning and ground breaking, pioneer of comedy in this country. Following his passing, his family issued the following statement. “Ewen was a much loved and cherished member of our family, he was a larger than life character and by his very nature was kind, generous and always giving of his time to those who asked for his help. “In addition to his comedy, he involved himself in a wide spectrum of events and activities, ranging from charitable initiatives through to involvement in local politics. “He brought smiles and laughter wherever he went and to everyone he met, and as his family we will remember those happy memories forever. “He was at such a great stage in his life – he had so much to live for and everything was going so well for him. “The one comforting thought is that he is now at rest with his beloved late wife, Cathy.” Prior to serving on the Onewhero board, Gilmour had been involved in local politics in West Auckland.

Auckland Acting Mayor Penny Hulse says she was deeply shocked and saddened at his sudden death.
Gilmour was a councillor on the former Waitakere City Council where Ms Hulse was Deputy Mayor. “Ewen was a great councillor and colleague and it’s just so hard to believe that someone who spent his life making people laugh is now silent, although his brilliance, charm and wit will live on in our memories,” Ms Hulse says. “Ewen was often entertaining in the council chamber but he was also incredibly committed to and caring of the communities he served which brought out his serious side. “He was funny and clever and will be sorely missed. The only consolation I can find is that he is reunited with his beloved wife Catherine who died in 2011.” The Waikato District Council’s Chief Executive Gavin Ion said the local board member would be missed. “There is a legislative process we need to follow in this situation, however we also need to take time to reflect on this sad news before working through the steps of replacing Ewen. “Ewen’s steady chairing of the Onewhero-Tuakau Community Board will be missed, as will his approachability and great sense of humour. Our thoughts are with his family, his colleagues and his community at this time.”

Man recovering after King Street crash
WE’RE NOW FUELING KIWIS IN TE HIHI
Traffic flows were affected for hours in Waiuku last Wednesday afternoon after a man in his late 50’s was struck by a vehicle near the Waiuku Library. The scene was taped off and the serious crash unit attended due to the nature of the man’s injuries, but last Friday he was able to tell friends he expected to be released from hospital on the weekend. The man was struck by a vehicle driven by a man on his way home from work, at an area with no marked pedestrian crossing.
Waitomo has been the same family owned business fueling other Kiwi businesses for over 65 years and now we’re expanding our network with a brand new Fuel Stop in Te Hihi.
Lower exchange rate, higher fuel costs Fuel prices rose 4 cents per litre during September, initially rising 2 cents at the beginning of the month and another 2 cents at the end. The cost of petrol at most service stations in the main centres ended the month on $2.22 per litre, with diesel at $1.52. “The increase in fuel prices is mostly due to falls in the exchange rate,” says AA PetrolWatch spokesperson Mark Stockdale. “The exchange rate has taken a big fall, dropping 6 cents during the month to its lowest level in thirteen months. Unfortunately, there’s no getting around the fact that a lower exchange rate equals higher prices at the pump. A simple rule of thumb is that a 1

cent drop in the New Zealand dollar equals a 1 cent increase in the price of fuel,” Mr Stockdale said. “Since the last price rise on 29 September, the cost of importing fuel has risen nearly 3 cents per litre,” Mr Stockdale said. “While there’s lots of expert opinion about the pros and cons of a high exchange rate, one thing is certain – all 3.2 million plus motorists in New Zealand will end up paying more for fuel if the exchange rate falls, and there could also be a flow-on effect to the prices of goods and services due to increased transport costs if the dollar drops substantially,” Mr Stockdale added.

New self defence course for women at CLM We are currently running a self defence course for women here at Franklin Sport Swim and Fitness to engage the community in becoming a safer place. Classes will run for 60 minutes and will combine both awareness and physical training. Trained instructors will be teaching women how to create distance between themselves and attackers but more importantly we will be trying to educate awareness of situations that could escalate into potential attacks and of course allow women the opportunity to remove themselves from this situation or alert surrounding people so as to discourage further risk. It is all too common that women are being harassed or sexually assaulted and therefore this course will hopefully empower women to act with confidence and encourage more women in our community to stand up for themselves and protect their own personal space. According to world renowned sociologist and women personal safety expert, Jocelyn Hollander, personal safety for women is about eliminating fear and becoming empowered, this course is designed with this in mind. The course is designed for all fitness levels and is certainly not geared towards
training women to become human weapons but rather weapons of awareness although that being said we do have classes that are available to take your self defence training further increasing both physical and mental development. It is based on modern self defence systems, not martial arts and has at its core, tried and proven experiential training methodology. In real terms this means that a great deal of emphasis is placed on prevention and enabling strategies. As such our collaborative self defence programme is characterised by an ethos of no fear, enjoy life. We encourage confidence to apply simple assertiveness based interventions at the earliest onset, knowing that the key in most instances is preventing escalation. Increased levels of intensity during training means participants can engage themselves when and where they feel comfortable but this is a no nonsense approach to self defence and comfort zones are compromised but certainly within safe limits and always with consent. Classes for both men and women are also available Monday nights. All enquiries contact Franklin Sport Swim and Fitness on 09 2385240 or text SAFE@ FRK to 884
Royal trip for Waiuku couple
During a recent visit to Europe for a conference and a series of project meetings, Waiuku’s Sylvia and Ron Bird received an invitation which would have been difficult to refuse - a trip on the Queen’s royal row barge Gloriana. This vessel, which is powered by eighteen rowers, was constructed along traditional period lines and presented to Her Majesty just prior to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Pageant on the Thames in June 2012. The invitation was made by Malcolm Knight of the Thames Alive Society and who is now charged with the responsibility of maintaining it and making it available for use on appropriate occasions. Malcolm was the flotilla manager for the 284 man powered boats that participated in the Pageant, while Ron also was also a member of a UK-based working group responsible for organising this huge event on the River Thames. Sylvia and Ron joined the row barge on the northern side of the Thames, almost oppo-
site Greenwich which was where the Royal Greenwich Tall Ships festival was centered with fifty four of these vessels taking part following a race from Falmouth in South East England. The rowers arrived along with six other invited guests and after a briefing the Gloriana departed the wharf followed by a small flotilla of 7 metre long cutters (large rowing boats) and three safety boats heading down the Thames, pausing only twice to raise their large (not to mention very expensive) decorated oars vertically in salute to Greenwich and the Dar Mlodziezy the largest of the Tall Ships moored on the Thames for the Festival. The cutters then turned to face west and a race ensued back to start point where Gloriana had taken up position on the finish line. Part of the reason Ron and Sylvia were in London was as a part of a project to celebrate a special event in New Zealand, at which Ron is tasked to invite selected tall ships to be in Gisborne in October 7th 2019.
Successful quilt show at Waiuku Organisers of the Waiuku Village Quilters’ biennial exhibition, held at the Waiuku War Memorial Hall, were pleased with the turn out of visitors to the event, despite inclement weather throughout the three days of the event. The show featured over 100 quilts and wallhangings as well as stunning embroidery, and there were stalls as well as a display by some of the top quilters from the region, and in fact from New Zealand. Different techniques were on display, including candlewick embroidery and long-arm quilting, as well as examples of round-robin quilts where members of the group takes turns to add levels to a quilt. Patrons had the chance to enter a raffle for one of three hand-made quilts, or to purchase the items on display, and were also able to vote for their favourites, and enjoy a cuppa and morning tea with members of the group. The club meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month, and members say anyone can join - regardless of their skill levels or previous quilting experience. To enquire about joining the group, phone Anne Johnston, 235 9165 or Joyce Quick, 235 9703. Right: Among the many who admired the quilt show last week were Peter and Wendy Wilson of Auckland.
Pink Ribbon appeal this Friday The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation is asking Kiwis everywhere to support its Pink Ribbon Street Appeal on Friday October 10 and Saturday October 11. More than 7500 volunteer collectors will be shaking their pink buckets on the streets and at shopping centres around the country, aiming to raise funds for research into new targeted treatments, life-saving awareness and education programmes, and support for women going through breast cancer. “It’s the generosity of Kiwis that makes our work possible,” says NZBCF chief executive
Van Henderson. “We’ve come so far in the fight against breast cancer in the past 20 years, with mortality dropping by a third, but we still lose more than 600 women a year – we need to keep researching for better treatments, and keep women aware and vigilant.” The increasing incidence of breast cancer now means that eight women a day are diagnosed – almost everyone knows someone affected. Research shows that the earlier breast cancer is detected, the better the outcome, so NZBCF is reminding women this month to know all the signs and symptoms.

I am often asked this question. As a Trichologist, I treat men, women & children who have problems of the hair & scalp. E.G: Excessive hair loss, alopecia, psoriasis, severe dandruff, acne, seborrheic dermatitis. There are many reasons why one may lose a lot of hair. Ill health, stress, after childbirth certain medications can cause abnormal hair loss. Men sometimes think they are losing their hair through male pattern baldness! On examining the scalp, it’s often to do with a specific problem. Once treated, the hair can grow back healthy & strong. If you have a problem, ACT NOW! Don’t keep putting it off. Dean shoots to New Zealand title at School Nationals
Two cousins, two codes, one goal Emily Kitson and Ethan Short are both stoked to be representing their Union of Counties Manukau - Emily playing rugby and Ethan playing hockey. Ethan plays for the Kohekohe hockey club and after a very successful season the team finished 1st equal. Ethan was selected to be a member of the Counties Manukau Under 13 Hatch Cup Boys hockey team with his rep season culminating in a National tournament to be held in Palmerston North during the school holidays.
Emily plays her rugby for the Rosehill College First XV and her consistent effort has paid off by being selected for the Counties Manukau Secondary Schools Girls team. This allows Emily to travel to Saturday fixtures to develop her skill set and be a member of a representative team environment. Their goal has been to enjoy the experiences and opportunities offered and to do well representing their Union proudly wearing the red, black and white stripe.
Good conditions for Buckland Bowls The first tournament of the year on October 1 at Buckland Bowling Club was blessed with far better weather than the opening just 11 days before. Sunshine and mild winds made for excellent conditions and the Deed and King greens played magnificently. The greenkeepers, led by new Life Member, Ivan Jensen, certainly know their
stuff. The tournament was sponsored by Crosbie Motors, Greg Bracewell Panelbeaters and SignMax. 26 teams of Triples contested over four games for a total of five prizes, the eventual winners being; 1st: Len Corney, Chris Walker and Barry Williams of Pukekohe. 2nd: Val Bowden, Bev Craig and April Downs of Pukekohe

Waiuku College’s Dean Sands has returned from a successful Waiuku College Shooting Team trip to Christchurch with a national title. Five of the Waiuku College Shooting Team competed in the South Island Champs and the New Zealand National Champs, two events that all Secondary School shooters aspire to be their best at. The weekend was attended by 293 shooters from around the country, a total of just over 58 squads, 45 schools from the top of the North to the bottom of the South were represented. Saturday’s weather for the South Island Champs was fine, light winds but cold especially in the afternoon for the shoot offs. First year shooter Niko Manning was the top shooter in the Teams Point Score event for the College, shooting 20/20 using only two second barrels for a score of 58/60, no mean feat for a new shooter. However several scores of 60/60 meant he failed to place in this event but should be proud of his accomplishments. The highlight of the day for Waiuku was the efforts of Dean Sands, Nelson Akast and Matty Collins all shooting 20/20 in Single Rise and making the shoot offs. It was after a long shoot off involving 72 shooters that saw Nelson place 10th overall after shooting over 50 targets straight before bowing out. It was Dean who finally had to settle for a Gold Medal, succumbing on his 121st target, one target behind Josh Nilsson of Dargaville who won High Overall with 122 targets without a miss. Coach Les Clarke and Manager Jo Sands were especially happy with the ef-

fort put in by the team. Waiuku College placed 9th in the team event. Day Two saw the New Zealand champs, the cold weather had set in and the scores on the day dropped with the temperature. Only Dean shot the possible 25/25 in the Single Rise however unlike the day before he did not feature in the medals in this event. It was the second event of the day, the Team and Individual Points Score event in which Dean shone, shooting a possible 25/25 and 75 points with only one other shooter for the day. After a brief shoot off Dean emerged the HOA New Zealand Champion for 2014, a very proud moment. Yet again Waiuku College excelled themselves and finished fourth equal overall on the day in the teams event from the 45 plus schools entered. So over the two days Waiuku College finished up third overall with both scores counted. Dean Sands was then picked to represent the North Island in the North v South Island Teams Competition shooting the lot and having the highest score for his team. Dean was also chosen for the N.Z. Fish and Game Regional Team (Auckland/Waikato Region) which was shot on the Monday morning.
This time the boys won the event shooting off against eight other regions securing the trophy and a Gold Medal. Dean once again was the top shooter of the team being only three points down and after shooting 10 Single Rise 10 Points Score and 10 Single Barrel off 18 metres. It was some great shooting by Dean and a nice way to finish his Secondary School Shooting. Accompanying the College team was ex-Waiuku College student and team member Zoe Groot who secured a Bronze medal in the South Island Single Rise Ladies section and represented the North Island in the North v South match and Auckland/Waikato in the Ladies Regional Team which finished with a Silver medal and Zoe shooting the highest score for the Team. Coach Les Clarke and Manager Jo Sands are especially proud of the team for the effort they put in and the help and support given by the parents, grandparents and friends They also wanted to thank both Bob Anderson and Bernie Dywer for their help and efforts assisting with the Team over the past year along with Reloaders Supplies for the continued support, encouragement and sponsorship.
