Synthetic drugs still on shelves in Franklin

Oh, what a night!

A 1940s-style radio variety show packed the Waiuku War Memorial Hall on Saturday night, and in the process raised almost $8000 to be divided between the Pink Ribbon and Blue Ribbon charities. The show, performed by members and friends of the Waiuku Theatre Group, featured a cast and crew of 31, and a number of local people who had not performed on stage before, and took the audience back to the era of London in the blitz, featuring 1940s songs, dress and even a ‘radio show’ complete with a live sound effects team. Audience members got into the spirit of the night, some even dressing up in 1940s costumes. Guest speaker for the evening

was Mac Macdonald from the Prostate Cancer Foundation, and Theatre Group president Glenda Hagenson said the night was an outstanding success, with all involved having a fantastic time, and raising just under $7800 after costs were deducted. The show was choreographed and produced by Jaime Hopkinson, and catered by the Waiuku Lions Club, and has seen calls for the group to host a similar event annually. The Theatre Group is back in rehearsals again for their next show ‘Nobody’s Perfect’ which opens on November 2 and runs for three weeks. Above: Wendy Dunn, Jaime Hopkinson and Glenda Hagenson in full voice on Saturday night.

On Saturday night I was lucky enough to be asked to play a small part in the Waiuku Theatre Club’s fund raising 1940s Variety Show. While there, I was amazed at the dedication, desire, and effort put in by the cast, the crew, and all involved in the production. Within our region, we are so lucky to have award-winning theatrical artists and producers of such quality. Whether it is the Waiuku Theatre Group, the Pukekohe Light Opera Club, or the Onewhero Society of Performing Arts, these groups all add their own valuable threads to the tapestry that is life in Franklin. I would encourage anyone to take the time to either become involved with these groups, support them via sponsorship if possible, or simply attend, and enjoy the many productions hosted in our region. While central and local government argues over how many millions to give to other orchestras or performance art, our own locals produce outstanding shows, virtually completely without outside funding, and through literally thousands of volunteer hours each year. On the subject of councils, there are only two more days to post your votes for the Auckland and Waikato local government elections and for the DHBs. Please, if you have not done so, find your voting papers and get them in the mail by Wednesday evening. Late voting papers can be dropped off at the Pukekohe Service Centre, but a high turnout from Franklin is important in how the council will view us for the next three years.

THE POST wants to hear from you! You can email your views to us at: info@thepostnewspaper.co.nz. or write to us at P.O Box 374, Waiuku.

Council issues symptomatic of system

Weekly crossword with the compliments of

I sympathise with Rex Wright in his anger at the bureaucrats but it is not them he should be blaming. The real problem is that our system is breaking. The global financial crisis has become an economic crisis as country after country finds itself in trouble, when the US has to borrow $2.5 Billion every single day of the week to prevent itself from falling into depression we need to pay attention. Meanwhile, energy supplies, especially oil, have stopped growing and are becoming increasingly expensive and difficult to produce, the climate has changed to one of alternating extremes and social unrest is

breaking out across the world. One of those forms of unrest is more people like Rex, taking more responsibility for their own wellbeing. We want better, cleaner, safer food and when the supermarket system fails to provide it, we grow our own. We cut back on power consumption and when the system just jacks up the price we turn to solar water heating and, increasingly, PV and wood fires. Capturing our own water, and processing our waste is the next phase and, thanks to higher environmental standards, Rex and the rest of us country dwellers are at the cutting edge of that process.

The system responds to all these threats by trying to force more of us back under its control. Rex’s water meter is exactly that, an attempt to find a way to defy reality and make us pay for things the system doesn’t, and can’t provide; its the perfect capitalist approach, provide nothing, and charge for it. The increasingly draconian rules on wood fires will force us to use the privatised electricity system, the proposed food “safety” regulations will force us back into the supermarkets and

when necessary to rescue the corrupt behaviours of the banks, as in Cyprus we will be “forced” to bail-in and lose our savings to keep them afloat. A fully functioning system would not need these heavyhanded methods to make us comply. But the system is no longer fully functional, it is failing and those who can’t read the signals will find themselves nastily exposed when it begins to break. Earl Mardle Bombay

Hospital a great local asset In answer to the letter in this week’s Post concerning the Franklin Memorial Hospital, it is my opinion that we are very fortunate to have this Elder Care and Hospice facility in our town, as over the years I have resided here, there have been several moves and intentions to close it by the DHB. The initial use as a Cottage Hospital built in 1923 was changed to a maternity hospital after a while. Many local residents were born there. A final change to geriatric, hospice use, has seen it serve the community well. I have heard many positive statements to this effect from the families of hos-

pice patients. Never, to my knowledge, was it intended as a general or surgical facility except maybe when it was a cottage hospital. We should therefore be thankful that our often terminal patients have a caring, tranquil facility so close to home. Other more specific care can be found at Manukau Super Clinic and those with transport worries can be accomodated with a Volunteer Driver Car Service. Let’s not make a fuss in case we lose what we do have, as so many other communities have done. Mrs Jeanie Jones, Waiuku

Organisers of the Pink Breakfast being held at Mega Mitre 10 on Friday have confirmed the guest speaker is to be the nationally-known lifestyle gardener Linda Hallinan. Linda is the editor-at-large for NZ Gardener magazine, and found fame some years ago when she decided to become self-sufficient, growing her own food in a section in Western Springs. Now she’s starting all over again with a 17-ha patch in Hunua, 45 minutes south of Auckland, where she lives with a household she describes as “two dogs, four cats, five ducks, 12 chooks, a fiesty rooster named Frederico (and his two randy offspring), 12 sheep (including a chubby genderconfused ewe called Harold), four horses, 19 cows and a marvellous man who probably has no idea what he has let himself in for.” Linda is expected to be a popular speaker for the breakfast on Friday, which runs from 7am to 9am at the cafe in Mitre 10. Pink Ribbon Breakfasts help fund vital research and organisers say it is through funding research that a cure for breast cancer can be found - and lives saved. To add to the fund raising efforts, there will be a bookstall of second hand books in the Mega Mitre 10 carpark on Saturday. Tickets for the breakfast are available from Gail at Pukekohe Travel or Karen at Caroline Eve, and if the tickets have all gone organisers ask that people consider making a donation to the cause. Above: The Pink Breakfast team are expecting a great day on Friday at the Mega Mitre 10 cafe.

Special birthday party

Cressie Garland of Waiuku celebrated her 96th birthday at Waiuku Estuary Village on Tuesday afternoon, family saying she has enjoyed a wonderful life of family happiness with three daughters, 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren! One of six daughters and a son born at Te Toro to Ann (nee Renall), and Charles McEwen, Cressie and her siblings were schooled at Te Toro, taken there by their Auntie Ema Renall in the family gig. In her teenage years she played table tennis and tennis and won the Te Toro ladies club champs, The McEwen family loved their music and the girls thought nothing of travelling on the back of a cream truck to dances in Orua Bay, Awhitu, Pollok, Waipipi and Waiuku. Cressie married Roy Garland in

1941, and raising three daughters on the family farm. Cressie was well known in the district for her knowledge of plants and flowers, something which has continued in the area since, in 1967, Cressie, Roy and daughter Gay started a flower and plant shop in Waiuku. In her later years, Cressie has enjoyed a life filled with family and her garden, bringing many people together with nursery visits, garden days and flower shows. She still enjoys the flowers in Gay’s Garlands Flower and Gift Shop, and treasures the staff at Waiuku Estuary Village, where she now resides. $15 million to mow The cost to roll out berm mowing to the whole region would be between $12-15 million per annum and represents an extra 1 per cent increase on rates, at a time when household budgets are tight, says the chair of Auckland Council’s Strategy & Finance Committee. A berm mowing service costing $3 million per year was only provided for by the old Auckland City Council area. None of the other six previous councils mowed berms, unless there was a hazard involved, and the councils worked with adjacent landowners to ensure local streets were maintained. “The rest of the region has always just got on with it and mowed their own berms because local people have taken pride in their local community. It’s disappointing that candidates and councillors from the old Auckland City Council area are complaining something the rest of the region has done without much fuss,” says Penny Webster. “It’s even worse when they argue that Auckland City areas should continue to have their berms mowed by being subsidised by the rest of us.”

Great fund raising effort Winter Warmer winner The Waiuku Winter Warmers prize winner was drawn on Friday, with Waiuku’s John Lusty getting the happy news that he had won $1000 worth of Waiuku Shopping vouchers from the Waiuku Business & Development Association. John entered the draw after purchasing a fridge at Gary Pyes 100% store. The promotion was a continuaton of the ‘Shop Local’ theme promoted by the Association which ran from August 1 to September 30. “The initiative was started to make the community aware and think about the huge benefits to the community when we all make an effort toshop local,” said Sharlene Druyven, Waiuku Town Manager. “The promotion was a great success with many people shopping local and taking advantage of the great offers available in the voucher book.”

Fiona Baker of the WB&DA with Sharleen and John Lusty, their daughter Monica, and Waiuku retailer Gary Pye after the announcement of the major prize winner.

National medals for College shooting members

Above, top: Some of the younger cast members from the Waiuku Theatre Group’s fundraising show on Saturday. Above: Mac Macdonald, with his wife Marian, was the guest speaker on behalf of the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

The Waiuku College shooting team headed to the North Island and national Secondary School championships in the last weekend of September. From a total field of 59 squads and 300 shooters, it was the girls team of Nicole Saunderson, Zoe Groot and Ellen Ballantine who collected a bronze in very tricky weather, with wind gusts of up to 40km/h on the first day of the North Island champs, Nicole also gaining a bronze for the Point Score event after a shootoff. The second day also provided entertaining shooting, with wind gusts causing unpredictable targets. The boys team of Dean Sands, Daniel Gleeson, Soren Enoka, Matty Collins and Campbell Jolly managed a fifth in the trying conditions, but the girls team again collected a bronze medal in the teams event. Nicole shone again, posting a ‘possible’ with 20/20 and entering a shootoff against five other girls and bringing home a silver medal for her efforts. Nicole was also selected for the Auckland/Waikato regional team,

which shot on the Monday, and she won another silver with some fine shooting. She scored the highest overall in that event, claiming a gold medal and bringing her overall medal haul to six for the weekend, an outstanding way to finish her secondary school shooting career. To cap the weekend off, four of the College team qualified for the NZ Youth Games to be held in Hamilton at the beginning of July, those selected being

Nicole Saunderson, Campbell Jolly,Zoe Groot and Dean Sands, a great achievement for them as the event is held only every four years. Manager Jo Sands, coach Les Clarke and the team thanked local funding group RAYD (Rugby and Youth Development) for their great support to enable the team to travel and compete in the Nationals. They also paid special tribute to Helen Agnew for all her hard work for the team.

Exhibition launch a grand success in Pukekohe A good crowd turned out to the New Zealand Steel Gallery at Franklin: The Centre on Saturday morning for the gala opening of Glenbrook artist Gae Webster’s exhibition. Featuring almost 80 pieces, as diverse as paintings, jewellery and mixed-media artworks, Gae’s exhibition, ‘Diverse Conversations’ is telling stories in many ways. Words, that have always been part of her work, are even more directly incorporated. There was great interest in the work from collectors and enthusiasts as well, with many of the featured creations al-

ready purchased before the gala opening. With over 20 years in mixed media arts, teaching workshops and classes and exhibiting solo shows biennially, including a solo show at the Auckland Botanical Gardens. Her works are collected privately and publicly with works in the Manukau Art Collection and in the international jewellery-making book ‘Fabulous Jewellery and Found Objects’. ‘Diverse Conversations’ shows her achievement and confidence in her eclectic nature and her expert manipulation of materials.

There is an ebb and flow between the large loose and free of her painting and the carefully working of metals with precision and engineering. The moon, childhood memories and stories weave through her work. An object work called The Croft series, quirky copper houses, make reference to the stories of her grandparents, born in little croft houses in the highlands of Scotland. The exhibition is open daily. Right: Gae Webster with Gallery Director Nansi Thompson at Franklin:The Centre on Saturday.

Meet the new Alice!

Why the

siren

sounded

Alice has never described herself as a small girl but after taking on a sedentary job a couple of years ago and with a habit of supersizing her combos she ended up unhappy at 102.4kgs. She decided to do something about it and managed to lose close to 20kg all by herself by making changes to her diet. After stalling for a while she decided to try exercise, she signed up for the 8 week Weight Loss Solution at Franklin Sport Swim and Fitness. Alice found the group sessions really fun as she got to exercise with great people who were facing the same sorts of challenges as her, after a time she came to realise that “exercise is the easy part, it’s the nutrition that’s hard” although the regular nutrition talks helped there. Alice lost a whopping 13.5kgs on the challenge taking her weight down to a comfortable 73.7kgs - that’s a massive 28.7kg weight loss in less than a year! Congratulations Alice!

Response to letter on Franklin Memorial Hospital

Your platform s... to share your news, views and idea

Bruce Brownlee (letter to Post Newspaper, October 1)has suggested there are no real plans and, from a health perspective we are third world. Colourful language aside, New Zealand is certainly not third world and most recently with the introduction of the Locality model is setting about to engage more people than ever in planning and developing services in Franklin. No one from Waiuku should miss an appointment for a clinic or a specialist in Manukau or Middlemore if they do not have transport. If you are unable to get there, a transport service is available through the volunteer driver scheme funded by Counties Manukau Health and managed by the Franklin Family Support Trust. There are varying levels of subsidy to help. You can pick up a pamphlet from their office in the Waiuku Civic Centre on the corner of Constable and King Street, or phone them on (09) 238 6233 for more information. Where volumes warrant, specialist clinics are being held in Franklin and we are considering what others might be appropriate. We

are also looking at ways to better help people manage their health at home, with help from their General Practice, without them having to go to hospital. We are doing our bit to unclog acute beds at Middlemore. Wherever possible we are bringing Franklin residents back either to Pukekohe Hospital for rehabilitation, or to their homes with appropriate support. The evidence shows people get better faster and are much happier being closer to their home and families. Major, specialised and sophisticated services are concentrated in centres for reasons of clinical safety and support, technical and ancillary services, and of course significant population to ensure maximum productive use. If Mr Brownlee has some specific issues about his involvement with Health Services, I am more than happy to meet with him and see what we can do to help. Geoff Smith General Manager Franklin Locality Clinical Partnership

Event a test for students

The Waiuku College World Challenge Group 2 participants wanted to do their own group fundraiser as a team building exercise before their big trip to Vietnam and Cambodia in January 2014. A lot of the skills they would need while on the World Challenge trip were put into practice to put an event together, which featured a night with the band ‘Bad Penny.’ The students designed fliers and tickets, a promotion pack was put together so they could seek sponsorship in the form of raffle and auction prizes, and a timeline and plan was put together by the group. Saturday September 28 saw a large group of people take to the Pukeoware Hall for a night of entertainment from the Auckland Classic

Rock Cover Band, and parents said basically they simply stood back on the night an let the youngsters get on with it. There were models showing everyone the auctions items for the night. The team was kept busy clearing tables, selling raffle tickets, talking to the patrons and handing out supper. Organisers says the parents of these young people are very proud of how their children just took control and made it their own. Even the clean up Saturday morning was done quickly! The team behind the project said a huge thank you has to go out to all the local businesses and individuals who helped and sponsored the event, which raised just over $5500 towards the World Challenge trip.

A commemoration to mark 150 years since the building of the Alexandra Redoubt in Tuakau, and to recognise the shared history of the area, will be held this Sunday, at the Redoubt site, from 2pm, with all local residents welcome. One of the best preserved earthworks of the New Zealand Wars, Alexandra Redoubt was one of a chain of fortifications built between Auckland and the Waikato. Constructed in July 1863 by 300 men of the 65th Regiment, the redoubt has commanding views of the Waikato and surrounding areas. The high earth walls and trenches – there is still a full two metres from the ditch floor to the top of the bank (escarpment) – protected a blockhouse and flagstaff. It is easier here than anywhere else to appreciate how redoubts were built. Alexandra Redoubt came under fire once, the garrison exchanging fire with a band of maori warriors, but no injuries were reported on either side. However, the redoubt is famous for being the staging point from where a Captain Swift left the site with 50 men after an attack by 200 Kingite warriors from the south Waikato on a supply depot at Camerontown, seven miles from Tuakau. Three

Europeans at the Camerontown depot were killed before the troops arrived, and what followed was a bloody battle, which led to a number of casualties on both sides, and was remarkable for the number of VCs and other awards made to the garrison’s soldiers. Janet Pates, organiser of the commemorations and part of the Friends of the Redoubt Group, says the commemorations will begin at 2pm with a Karakia from a local kaumatua, before the visitors advance to the site, where the national anthem will be played. After a welcome and an address by Hunua MP Dr Paul Hutchison, there will be a demonstration by members of the 65th re-enactment group. There will be a planting of a tree donated by Tui-Glen Nurseries in Pukekohe, performed by Bruce Graham of the Tuakau Museum, before a blessing by Mara Tupaea and a prayer by Allan Rowe. Following an ode of remembrance and the playing of the Last Post, the group will gather at the Sea Scouts hall below the redoubt for refreshments and viewing of a number of historical items. Janet says thanks are due to the OnewheroTuakau Community Board for providing funding to enable the commemorations to go ahead.

Tuakau artist gains a finalist spot Tuakau resident, Robin Ranga’s clay creations have earned her a finalist place in the country’s most prestigious ceramic competition - the 2013 Portage Ceramic Awards. She says of his finalist work “This “body” of work was inspired by principles of free will, respect, and expanding liberty through learning. Purposely, faces of these unclothed and unadorned humble clay figures are concealed, and the viewer can only rely on their stance to interpret intent.” Ms Ranga is one of three Waikato artists to be announced as a finalist for the 2013 Portage Ceramic Awards. Kate Burchett (Cambridge) and Yasmin Davis (Hamilton) will also compete for the coveted Premier Portage Ceramic Award which carries a prize of $15,000. This year’s judge, Amy Gogharty (Canada) is respected as an awards’ convenor around the world. She commented the finalist works were of a similar calibre to that selected for exhibition internationally. “In all of the work, I looked for ambition— something that went beyond ordinary studio/gallery work and that seemed to appreciate this is a premier award. “I’ve chosen a lot of work that is “quirky,”— strange forms, odd colour, playful rather than Phone: 09 235 7835

literally “meaningful. I also was attracted to functional work that appeared to comment in some way about its status as functional work—in how it was arranged or displayed. In the sculptural work, I looked for a level of sophistication in the perceived meaning and the realization as form.” There are 60 finalist works selected from more than 200 entries. From fingernail minute to multipiece, metre-high installations and ranging in colour from porcelain white to eye-popping psychedelic the works come from practicing ceramic artists all over New Zealand. The finalist works will be on exhibition at ‘The Silos’, Wynyard Quarter, Auckland Viaduct for one week only, 12 –20 October 2013. The winners will be announced at a ceremony at The Silos on Friday 11. In addition to the Premier Portage Award, two inaugural, international residencies will be announced. A one month residency at the International Ceramic Research Centre in Guldagergaard, Denmark and another to Medelta, Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada. Up to six merit awards and a People’s Choice Award will also be given this year. Entry forms for the public to vote for this Award are available at the exhibition.

Watch the Pros in action at Waiuku Golf! 13 October 2013

Preschool Pirates on Parade At First Steps Waiuku, the Preschool room have been focusing on Pirates and learning all about them. The children loved talking like pirates and participating in daily pirate activities. The preschool children even helped to make their own pirate ship! The group celebrated with a Pirate Party for the children to attend and join in fun! One of the activities was a treasure hunt where they went outside and had to find a gold doubloon! Once

they had found their gold, they got to choose their very own treasure to take home! There was also a special visitor, Charlie White the Waiuku horse, who came dressed as a pirate with his own parrot and treasure chest!Organisers say it was great to see the participation from the parents in getting their children dressed up as pirates and pirate princesses, and the excitement and fun that each and every child experienced.

A thousand years ago, the human race abandoned the planet Earth, as it had become too inhospitable to sustain them. Now, the military leader General Cypher Raige (Will Smith) and his son (Jaden Smith) have crash landed on the planet after an asteroid storm forces them off their course. With each other to rely on, the father and son team must find a way off the planet, if they can first survive a world filled with creatures who’ve all evolved to kill humans.

for your youngsters! • Make an appointment: visit a few places before coming to a final decision. This will help you imagine the environment in which your child will be spending several hours a day. From November 1, New Zealand’s child restraint laws will change requiring children to use an approved child restraint up to their seventh birthday. The move comes in an effort to improve the safety of children travelling in vehicles, following evidence demonstrating that many school age children are too small to safely use adult seatbelts. Safekids Aotearoa, the child injury prevention service of Starship Children’s Health, acknowledged the Government for updating New Zealand’s child restraint laws. Safekids Aotearoa also advises parents that, regardless of age, school-age children are safest in a booster seat until they are 148cm tall. With support from Caltex, The Baby Factory and the Starship Foundation, Safekids Aotearoa has developed a booster seat programme to help schools prepare for changes to New Zealand’s child restraint rule, as well as provide further information regarding the 148cm recommendation. “The efforts made by Caltex, The Starship Foundation and The Baby Factory have been essential to increasing awareness of our campaign and reducing the costs for Kiwi families to comply with the new law through the voucher scheme,” says Ann Weaver, Director of Safekids Aotearoa. To raise awareness and assist with compliance, Caltex are offering a voucher for 10% off any booster seat, including already discounted items, purchased at The Baby Factory before November 8. The vouchers are available from participating Caltex stations nationwide, as well as via the Safekids Aotearoa booster seat programme kits sent to primary schools throughout New Zealand.

Fuel prices should be lower, says AA Petrol and diesel prices fell 8 cents per litre during September, and the AA says fuel companies should be cutting prices further. The price of petrol fell to $2.17 per litre in the main centres, the lowest price since June, with diesel retailing for $1.52 per litre at most service stations by month end. “After commodity prices spiked in August on fears of a possible US strike against the Syrian government, they have since fallen about US$6 a barrel, while at the same time the New Zealand exchange rate has risen 5 cents against the US dollar during September,” says AA PetrolWatch spokesperson Mark Stockdale. “The AA’s analysis of imported petrol and diesel prices shows that by month end, imported costs had fallen about 12 cents per litre, so there is room for fuel companies to cut prices by at least another 4 cents per litre,” Mr Stockdale added. With high fuel prices, motorists are looking for ways to manage their fuel costs. One of the easiest ways is to top up the air in your tyres once a month. All tyres gradually lose air and AA tests have shown that under-inflated tyres can increase fuel consumption by 8%. That’s equivalent to wasting 17 cents per litre of petrol. The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) has recently launched an online tool to help motorists keep their tyres at the right pressure to save money as well as improve safety. By entering a car’s number plate, the online tyre pressure tool provides the correct tyre pressure for that car. Motorists can top at their tyres for free at any service station. The tyre pressure tool was developed by EECA in partnership with the NZ Transport Authority and Z Energy.

Lower alcohol limit wanted

It is time for New Zealand to lower the legal limit for drinking and driving, says the country’s largest driver representative group. There is expected to be more than 1000 injury or fatal crashes this year involving alcohol, and tackling drink driving remains a key priority of New Zealand’s Safer Journeys Road Safety Strategy. The AA, which represents nearly 1.4 million Members, is supporting a lower adult limit as well as pushing for several other changes to prevent more people being killed and hurt on our roads by drunk drivers. “Research in New Zealand and overseas shows that at a .08 BAC level drivers are far too impaired to safely drive. A lower limit will be safer for everyone on the roads. Research has also shown that at a BAC level of .05 or above people start to lose the ability to make a good judgement about how drunk they are and whether to drive,” says AA Motoring Affairs General Manager Mike Noon. “The AA has surveyed our members and two-thirds want to see the adult limit low-

ered from .08 to .05. Our members, both in cities and rural areas, are telling us that the current limit is too high and that it’s time to get tougher on drink driving.” The AA will be calling for drivers caught at a BAC level between .05 and .08 to be issued with fines and demerit points on the spot by Police rather than facing protracted court and criminal charges. “Just lowering the BAC limit will not fix everything however. Our research has also shown that 1 in 2 drink drivers are repeat offenders. We have caught them before, some of them many times,” says Mr Noon. The AA is also calling a package of measures including more focus on repeat drink drivers, alcohol rehabilitation programmes and much greater use of alcohol interlocks to stop these drivers re-offending. “Lowering the limit will reinforce the risks of drinking and driving to the public. The AA hopes it will have a similar effect to the zero BAC level for drivers under 20 which has seen the number of young drink drivers fall 22%.”

Clean cut for endurance round

Orix Team Racing driver Paul Manuell applied a slightly unorthodox but very streamlined approach to the endurance sector of the highly competitive Supertourer Series at the technical circuit Hampton Downs recently. Paul agreed to contribute his full crop of hair by having it shaved by M3 teammate and motorsport legend Greg Murphy as his contribution to Canteen New Zealand who do a fantastic job of supporting young people living with cancer. “It’s been a real eye opener and absolute honor to support this very important charity” said Paul who’s hair-shedding effort netted over $7,000 to the $40,000 raised. Paul’s new streamlined look also delivered a performance gain on the circuit as Paul qualified the Orix Commodore in a strong seventh spot amongst a classy field littered with some of the best touring car drivers in Australasia. Paul’s endurance co-driver John Penny, who endured a more difficult qualifying session, commenced race one from the back of the grid however experience counted as the

two drivers gained valuable positions both on the circuit and in the pits with a very slick driver change netting them a well deserved eighth spot by the end of the nearly one hour endurance race. Unfortunately race two was a significantly shorter affair as the Orix Commodore suffered a rare mechanical failure when the transmission failed on the warm up lap. The M3 crew worked their magic replacing the transmission in slick time and the Orix Commodore again starting near the rear of the field due to the race two DNF. The well-rehearsed driver changes combined with a superb handing Orix Commodore again paid off both Paul and John worked through the field to a credible 11th place by race end. “We still had a strong and consistent weekend considering the challenge faced proceeding race two however the car was handling very well netting us consistent and highly competitive lap times which bode well for the next endurance event scheduled at Hampton Downs in less than three weeks” says Paul.

Grand Theft Auto… Waiuku style! It’s not every day you ‘steal’ a car without meaning to, but that’s the embarrassing position Waiuku man ‘Ash’ found himself in last week! After backing up from a carpark in Waiuku’s Queen Street, he set off down the road and noticed his steering felt heavy and the car felt very sluggish. Checking that his handbrake wasn’t on, he looked in his rear view mirror and says he got the fright of his life when he saw a car following him incredibly closely - without a driver! Stopping outside the Kentish Hotel, he found a lady dashing towards him calling that he had driven away with her car. It seems, when he reversed, he had hooked his car’s towbar under the front bumper of the car behind, and then set off with the car in tow! It took only a few moments to disentangle the two vehicles, with no damage reported, but ‘Ash’ had to suffer a few comments from the lads on the deck of the Kentish as he drove away!

Steelers ready for last challenge Counties will aiming to bounce back from the weekend’s loss against Canterbury next Friday in front of a vocal home crowd at ECOLight Stadium where they hope to lock the Ranfurly Shield away for the summer as they prepare to play the Southland Stags.

Kickoff on Friday night is scheduled for 7.35pm in a match that is expected to see a bumper crowd, and will be not only a Shield Challenge, but the final hit-out for the squad as they prepare for their semi-final in the ITM Cup. The weekend’s result, in

which Canterbury stormed back from a deficit to claim a 38-23 win at AMI Stadium in Christchurch, sees the Steelers remain in fourth place on the standings and certain of playing in the premiership division semifinal in two weeks time against Wellington. With a whole host of players rested the Steelers stood up to the five-time defending champions leading for 60 minutes and were on course to create an upset A pair of penalties to first five Tyler Bleyendaal ensured the hosts were off to a solid start however Counties soon wiped out the early advantage when Ki Anufe struck twice to even the scores. Wing Lolohea Loco, who was on debut, was impressive early on and looked dangerous as he threatened to break open the Canterbury defence on one of his runs. On the back of some great pieces of skill by captain Mark Selwyn where he managed to chip ahead, he gave

his side the front foot ball needed as a number of players combined well together that resulted in second five Tyrone Lafau diving over to take the lead. Bleyendaal’s third penalty closed the gap as the home side trailed the Steelers 13-9 at the halftime break. Another Anufe penalty restored the earlier margin in the second half before a beautifully timed run by loose forward Sean Reidy saw him dive in at the corner to make it 23-9 Unfortunately for the visitors, Canterbury soon clicked into gear and wing Patrick Osborne was held up over the line. He made no mistake a second time around though, powering through from the first phase of the ensuing scrum to score. A try to Nasi Manu minutes later allowed Canterbury to draw within two as the Steelers were forced to defend their line. Then two tries to Luke Whitelock late in the match saw Canterbury claim the bonus point win.
