Trainer of the Year In March, Nigel Gervis, Technical Director was honoured to receive the “Trainer of the Year” award for Traditional Building Skills at an award ceremony at Kenwood House, London. Nigel was presented with the prestigious Marsh Award for Traditional Building Skills by Mr Brian Marsh OBE.

At the Tywi Centre, we provided lime plastering courses, demonstrations at a heritage open day and we spent an exhausting, but rewarding, day providing workshops for 70 school children who were doing construction GCSEs and were eager to get hands on!

The meeting started by Nigel Gervis giving a talk and a guided tour of Ty-Mawr, ˆ its history, the renovation project of all the buildings and how new buildings have been incorporated. The A.E.C.B. members were particularly impressed by Nigel’s thoughtfulness and innovation, combining lime with more modern sustainable materials like recycled foamed glass in the insulated limecrete floor in the Ty-Mawr ˆ farmhouse.

The next meeting of AECB Cymru will be on the 4th February - linked with the Stone Cold Houses Project conference organised by the Eco Centre Wales. See www.aecb.net Report by CHRIS LORD-SMITH.

‘Evolution’, ‘innovation’ and ‘eco’ were the buzz words heard in this year’s WAN Product of the Year Award jury session who were delighted with the global spread and number of high quality projects that were submitted. Regarded as one of the more challenging sessions, the jury came together to reduce a longlist of thirty-four fantastic products to a shortlist of just six! glaster® was shortlisted with entries from New Zealand, the Netherlands and Poland. As part of this prestigious award - glaster® will now be featured permanently on the WAN website.

The first meeting of the Welsh local group was held on 24th November at Ty-Mawr. ˆ

We also discussed the importance of using local materials, how those materials were traditionally recycled back in to the building, building design to suit the region and the materials available and last but not least the research, development and application of traditional and recycled materials to suit our present day needs. The meeting closed with everyone in a buoyant and supported frame of mind and a vote of thanks to Nigel and Joyce for their hospitality.

Nanotechnology World Architecture Award for glaster® plaster, commending the initiative shown We were thrilled to hear that glaster was arrives at Ty-Mawr! ˆ

This annual award is given to an individual trainer who has demonstrated outstanding work within the built heritage sector and is generously sponsored by the Marsh Trust, run in partnership with English Heritage and CITB Construction Skills.

Courses We had 945 delegates on courses this year excluding external courses such as those run for the Tywi Centre in Llandeilo. Courses ranged from lime introduction and plastering to energy efficiency, limecrete and thatching. We were pleased to hold our first colour day which looked at colour in the landscape to inform architecture. This day was warmly received by the local authorities and architects that attended. In November, we held a specialist technical day on Glapor, the recycled foamed glass granulate used in our floor systems, with architects, engineers and contactors from all over the UK interested in this innovative multifunctional insulating construction material suitable for a wide range of applications.

Product News

In September, Ty-Mawr ˆ joined the Carpenter’s Fellowship in St Fagan’s for a fascinating weekend. It was Ty-Mawr ˆ with the Wool Campaign at Ecobuild, 2012. very inspiring to be surrounded by building’s reconstructed using traditional materials, many, like the mortars and plasters used to reconstruct St Teilo’s 13th century church, made by Ty-Mawr. ˆ

Sharing Skills Ty-Mawr, ˆ jointly with Jones and Fraser, has taken on two Heritage Bursary Students, Paul Walters and Rhys Jenvey, to enable them to learn on the job as well as by getting exposure to a fantastic array of projects Already they have been involved in the conversion of a Grade II* listed stable block, repairs to a unique range of slaughter house buildings in Monmouth, the installation of limecrete floors and also rendering with glaster® on a town house in Bristol. In December, Ty-Mawr ˆ look forward to hosting all 16 Welsh Heritage Bursary Students.

by Ty-Mawr ˆ for developing and testing the product themselves.

“If we’re talking about innovation, especially in today’s market, people getting together and actually coming up with a product, and I think it is quite something that they have done something with that” SCOTT LAWRIE “I think it is more flexible and yet still stronger than conventional materials” TIM MORGAN “They’ve developed it themselves, they’ve tested it themselves, I think that is very commendable” ANDREW BEST We look forward to doing our first international project - any ideas, please email nigel.gervis@lime.org.uk

The judges commented on this highly environmentally-friendly version of lime We are pleased to be stocking a new range of clear vapour permeable coatings for the protection of walls, floors and woodwork. The SurfaPore products are based on Nanotechnology whereby the nano-particles deeply penetrate and shield the microscopic pores of the surface (render, stone or wood). This allows water and moisture to be actively repelled while materials retain their ability to ‘breathe’! It is therefore ideal for additional protection of lime renders, limecrete floors as well as work surfaces and wood work. A revolution in breathable floor solutions GLAPOR Foamed Glass is the most structurally and thermally superior product we have ever supplied for floor applications. By using GLAPOR Recycled Foamed glass within the insulation layer of your floor savings can be made on installation costs due to its ability to compact to a weight bearing surface. GLAPOR also offers the benefit of being more ‘sustainable’ as it is manufactured using 100% recycled glass.

Only available from T y-Mawr ˆ Lime Ltd! From the birth of our innovative Limecrete flooring system, launched in 1998 as a breathable, lightweight alternative to cementbased concrete, we at Ty-Mawr ˆ have been selecting and testing various materials and combinations of materials to both simplify the installation process and improve the ‘green’ credentials of our floor. Following developments in the manufacturing process of the GLAPOR Foamed Glass gravel and extensive testing of our recycled lime screed product we are proud to announce the launch of our first slab-less, breathable, sustainable floor system. As with our Limecrete system the Sublime® floors breathability makes it ideal for use within existing solid wall properties however, it’s excellent environmental credentials along with its simplicity and ease of installation makes Sublime® an equally appropriate choice for new builds and extensions! By eliminating the need for a slab layer within a floor system containing underfloor heating the Sublime® floor offers significant benefits

and savings: • reduced excavation depths • reduced wet trades and processes • reduced installation costs • reduced installation and curing times • improved efficiency and response times of under floor heating systems

Customer confidence in our systems is vital which is why at Ty-Mawr ˆ we invest heavily in product testing and certification. Our Sublime® floor system, like the Limecrete system before it, will carry it’s LABC Registered detail (expected early 2013). Our team are able to design your floor to meet the needs of your specific building, ensuring that you get the best performance for your building and as well as meeting building regulations if required. Climate Change – why low carbon building materials matter On 3rd December, the Guardian reported that carbon dioxide emissions from industry rose an estimated 2.6% this year, according to a study of global carbon emissions. The research by the Global Carbon Project, an annual report card on mankind’s CO2 pollution, also says emissions grew 3.1% in 2011. Total emissions for 2012 are estimated to be 35.6 billion tonnes, researchers said in the study, published in the journal Nature Climate Change. Current emissions growth is placing the world on a path to warm between 4°C and 6°C, says the study, with global emissions jumping 58% between 1990 and this year. The study focuses on emissions from burning fossil fuels and cement production. Emissions in 2011 from coal totaled 43%, oil 34%, with gas and cement production making up the rest.
