This we carry along with our BS8555 (Environmental Management) Award, demonstrating that we practise what we preach through the business in terms of reducing our own environmental impact and our Ethical Award which recognises the “pioneers of ethical business...and corporate social responsibility”.

Welcome! In 2013, we welcomed Martin Tavener as PA to the Directors and Training Course Co-ordinator. Martin is a former Detective Chief Inspector but has now retired from the Police Service. He brings a wide range of skills to support the needs of a growing business and is already taking the lead on certification for quality and environmental standards and co-ordinating events, shows and courses as well as designing the internal training programme.

Nationwide Access We have completed our first year as a nominated supplier to the independent builders’ merchants network (NBG). We have been pleased with the response which now provides nationwide access to our materials. The group comprises of 89 partner companies with 282 outlets. NBG has a members outlet in most areas of the UK offering the customer best service, best value and best quality both locally and nationally. See www.nationalbuyinggroup.com/members for your local branch.

Growth in Green Construction

With various reports of UK construction hitting a 6 and some even reporting a 10 year high this autumn, we are pleased to feel a small part of it within the green sector with a significant increase in sales for the second half of the year. It is heartening to see so much wonderful work going on after years of such work being ‘on hold’! We are encouraging clients to post photographs of their work on our facebook page, helping us to continue to spread the word and really build confidence in using natural and low impact products and systems as a real and practical alternative to conventional materials. The benefits for the building, the environment and the health of those working and living with the materials are beginning to be much more widely acknowledged and understood. To continue to be able to service our market efficiently, we are expanding into a further 10,000 square ft unit, doubling the size of our current technical sales and finance office, as well as increasing our warehouse space and production capacity. We will bring you more news during 2014 as plans unfold.

Welcome to the last newsletter of 2013. It has been our busiest year ever with events, awards, new product launches as well as the acquisition of additional premises to serve an expanding market. This newsletter contains just a handful of the highlights which we hope you enjoy! We would like to thank our clients, suppliers and friends for their support in 2013 and to wish everyone very best wishes for the coming year.

save money - naturally Governments are encouraging us to insulate our buildings to save energy and hence money, which is of course better for the environment, but for solutions to be sustainable in old buildings as well as environmentally friendly then a different approach is required to the off-the shelf, ‘modern’ solutions that potentially trap moisture in the building as well as eventually being destined for landfill!

®

Over the last year, Tˆy-Mawr has supplied in excess of 9,500 orders to some of the most prestigious projects in the UK, here are some highlights from this year...

MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS 012

What a Corker! Cork boards and insulating cork render have made a dramatic entrance into our product range in the UK. Clients are attracted by the outstanding performance, the flexibility to use them internally or externally as well as the sustainable nature of the products. Directors Nigel and Joyce Gervis, visited the vast cork forests in Portugal earlier this autumn as well as the processing plant and quarries to see how the Secil products are produced. Cork is obtained from the cork oak which is stripped of its bark every 9 to 10 years. It then regenerates. The cellular structure of the bark makes the cork light in weight, resistant to the penetration of moisture, strong, durable and resistant to the effects of friction. These properties, combined with its fire resistent nature, make it ideal as both an aggregate and as a board product for thermal and sound insulation. Nigel said “we are renowned for developing, or in this case, identifying, the best possible raw materials and products on the market to incorporate into our product range as well as our systems. We therefore visited the manufacturers of our cork products to satisfy ourselves of the environmental, ethical, performance and quality control aspects of these products. We were absolutely delighted with all that we saw and learned. We are therefore pleased that they are already such a popular addition for wall insulation”. For further information and data sheets on the cork products, please contact technical@lime.org.uk.

2013 proved to be another full year for courses and events. Our introduction to lime in building and lime plastering days continued to draw in delegates from around the UK. With the continued Government incentives for insulation and energy efficiency our annual energy day attracted a host of interested participants keen to learn about building physics and appropriate methods of insulation - many delegates then attended our limecrete day to gain a better understanding of where, why and how the flooring system is used. We finished our contract with the Tywi Centre, providing courses on many subjects throughout the year including an annual introduction for this years intake of Heritage Bursary Students. In addition to our set course programme, we provided a two day course at the Blaenavon World Heritage site conserving industrial archaeology and taught on a suite of courses for the Tredegar Townscape Heritage Initiative Scheme. Technical Director, Nigel Gervis continued to spread the word with numerous CPDs at architects practices and talks for the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings and Institute of Historic Building Conservation.

Premixed Lime Mortars

UK Finalist! We were delighted to be announced as winner of the LABC Cymru ‘All Wales’ award for ‘Best Technical Innovation’ for our sublime® flooring system and were extremely proud then to go forward to represent Wales in the UK’s National LABC Building Excellence finals. At a glamorous ceremony hosted by Giles Brandreth at the Barbican, we were presented with our finalist certificate in an impressive final that included the Shard and Liverpool Central Library (overall winner). The flooring system, specifically designed for use with underfloor heating, provides a clean, high quality alternative to concrete with excellent technical performance, good environmental credentials as well as a simple installation procedure. Already specified and installed in hundreds of buildings UK-wide - please see projects on page 4 for a few examples.

Our own traditional premixed mortars are still our best seller, available in 1 tonne or 25kg small bags/buckets. Used in the correct situation at the right time of year and with the right protection; they are easy to manage on-site (no gauging errors), are easier to mix/knock-up and reduce waste (the bag can be covered for use the next day). We are also able to design a mix to match your existing mortar, please send us a sample or call to discuss your project.

Fact Finding in Northern India Earlier this year, Coleg Powys, in association with T y-Mawr, ˆ led on a fact finding visit to explore the state of conservation heritage work in the construction industry in India. The visit was funded by the British Council via a successful bid submitted to UKIERI in 2012. The itinerary was ambitious and involved meetings with a range of not for profit organisations, conservation experts and architects, government agencies and the Construction Sector Skills Council of India who all generously gave us their time.

This increasingly popular through coloured render is available in a range of ready mixed colours for ease of application. It is highly suitable for lightweight cement insulation blocks as well as bricks and stone. It has excellent water proofing properties whilst being breathable. Please call us for a colour chart.

We have welcomed Huw Francis, a plasterer from the Heritage Bursary Scheme who is working alongside us and conservation builders Jones & Fraser gaining knowledge of lime plastering from production to application. Jamie Miles, a Fellow on this year’s SPAB William Morris Craft Fellowship also worked alongside our team for a few weeks rounding up his prestigious six-month programme of site, workshop and studio visits.

St Astier - Thermocromex

Launched in December and now in stock! A traditional, clear wax for the maintenance of all interior wood combining beeswax, carnuba, candilla and ceresin waxes.

Nigel and Joyce carried out a number of visits to heritage sites to examine the working methods and materials employed on live projects in Agra, Jaipur and New Dehli. Nigel, Technical Director, said; “The visit has been fascinating. What has been most revealing is the fact that the challenges faced by India in conserving its buildings are so similar to the ones faced by us in the UK. Like their UK counterparts, Indian conservation specialists struggle to ensure that an understanding of the construction materials and processes are shared by everyone involved in the project. This often results in inefficient repairs which prove more costly and time consuming in the long run.” The challenge India faces is huge; the government estimates that there is a requirement to train 30 million people in the construction industry alone, over a 10 year period. Joyce, Managing Director, added; “The visit has provided us with fantastic insights into the commercial, political and social context of the construction Industry in India. We have gained a greater understanding of heritage work in the country, and feel there is a great opportunity to apply some of our experience and knowledge with organisations involved in maintaining buildings out there. We hope that through co-operation, we could help to prevent a repeat of some of the mistakes made here in the UK by using inappropriate materials and techniques.”

St Astier - Lithomex This year we have introduced St Astier’s excellent specialist stone repair mortar. The mortar is available in four standard colours, otherwise, we can tailor-mix a colour to match your stone. Please send us a sample or call to discuss your requirements.
