Prince’s Foundation for the Built Environment Summer School

PRODUCT UPDATE

Dynamic Modelling

In July we were very honoured to host part of a three week long Summer School run by the Prince’s Foundation for the Built Environment. The Summer School takes place each year and aims to develop an in-depth knowledge both of traditional building and repair techniques and how these can be applied in the twenty-first century.

students from Simon Fraser University in Canada.

After an initial week based in London undertaking geometry and structure exercises and architectural drawing tours, the Summer School moved to Wales for the last week in ˆ July. The students spent a week at Ty-Mawr working with expert craft teams to learn craft The 27 participants were a mixture of Building and conservation skills. The first day was lead Craft Apprentices and Graduate Fellows. by Ty-Mawr ˆ ’s Most of the 12 craft Technical Director, apprentices came from the Nigel Gervis, and UK, including looked at the “Week two at Ty-Mawr ˆ was heaven. stonemasons, carpenters, importance of lime To be in that place, surrounded by roof slate and tilers and a passionate, knowledgeable people was in buildings blacksmith, but there was including a a carpenter from Jamaica truly a privilege.” JOSH BURRELL demonstration of (who not surprisingly found the Welsh summer rather decorative plasterwork by the highly regarded chilly!) and a stonemason from St Helena! lime plasterer Jeff Orton. On subsequent days The Graduate Fellows were drawn from the students spent a day on each of the crafts disciplines such as Architecture, Engineering of timber framing, thatching, dry stone walling and Town Planning. With just one graduate and plastering under the tuition and support from the UK they were a very cosmopolitan from John Munro, Alan Jones, Stuart Fry, group coming from Afghanistan, Gambia, Julie Haddow, Finn Fraser and Tom Jones. With the ever increasing pace we are being encouraged to insulate our old buildings, our concern for the impact insulation materials might have on the building structure occupies more and more of our time and energy!

Calsitherm Calcium Silicate Board (30mm=0.77 W/m2K)

T y-Mawr ˆ now has an extended range of our ever popular clay paints. These paints are an exciting alternative to emulsion, providing a distinctive, visually soft matt finish with great covering power and performance, free of VOCs and other harmful emissions, which can benefit allergy and asthma sufferers. Not only are we able to offer our customers a further 126 colours, we have also become a colour palette tinting centre for bespoke orders.

For the final week of the Summer School the students moved on to the National Botanic Gardens of Wales where they designed a new structure for the grounds drawing on the inspiration and skills that they had received.

We are concerned that many of the ‘mass’, highly processed materials being used will actually trap moisture in the walls leading to all the problems that we are already familiar with (since the introduction of impervious paints and plasters, cement mortars and renders as well as concrete floors). We are gradually un-doing the damage these materials have caused over the last few decades, so are we in danger of making the same mistakes again? Well, we believe we could be, which is why we have been working very closely with a number of individuals and organisations to look at the most appropriate ways of insulating solid walls in particular and the best way to model what can happen within the building structure postinsulation installation! We are now able to undertake dynamic modelling using WUFI and are working closely with the Welsh School of Architecture in developing a project that would concentrate on improving the evidence base to better understand the impact of the various solutions particularly in relations to the building structure types we have in Wales. See website for latest news…

We look forward to receiving the 2011 participants on the 25th July for another inspirational week!

Setting the standard for natural insulation

In the evenings the students were inspired by lectures given by craftsman and sculptor Rory Young on the buildings of the Welsh Marches and the conservator Ned Scharer, who described his recent work restoring the Cosmati Pavement in Westminster Abbey. They also explored the local area (and hostelries!) on walking tours exploring the history of Llangorse Lake and the buildings of Brecon. The highlight for many of the students was a visit by HRH The Prince of Wales who dropped in for a cup of tea to see what they were up to. He visited each workshop and even had a go at thatching where tutor Alan Jones said His Royal Highness ‘showed considerable promise’!

Following on from our successful Welsh wool insulation batts, we are now able to offer Thermafleece EcoRoll, a low density wool based insulation roll that is quick and easy to install. Designed to minimise the up-front cost, it makes wool based insulation a more affordable option to a wide range of users building upon the success of previous roll designs. The new TF35 roll is at the top end of our range. A high density wool insulation, the TF35 is designed to meet the most demanding energy efficiency requirements with a thermal conductivity of 0.035W/mK, no quilted wool based insulation meets its performance. To accompany our wool range we also offer Thermafleece Hemp insulation. This plant fibre insulation fits securely between rafters, joists and studs providing excellent thermal insulation performance. Each batt comprises 60% UK grown hemp, 30% recycled polyester and 10% polyester binder with a high recycled content. With a density of 25kgm-3 it provides great acoustic absorption.

Woodfibre Board (100mm=0.3 W/m2K)

Add colour to your walls and ceilings Tˆy-Mawr Thermafleece Wool or Hemp Insulation (100mm) & Wood Wool Board (15mm=0.30 W/m2K)

Edenbloc35 Composite Board (100mm=0.26 W/m2K)

Here at T y-Mawr ˆ we are also pleased to see the launch of EdenBloc35, being the first fully British manufactured rigid insulation, it is made from recycled carpet wool which makes it one of the most sustainable insulation products. EdenBloc35 is a natural, low density rigid insulation that can be used in many internal situations including wall lining, under rafters, between rafters and timber studs. Manufactured in the UK, it provides sizable energy efficiencies in service and locks up nearly twice its own weight in CO2 which all contributes to its excellent carbon footprint. The unique patented technology combines excellent thermal performance with the breathability of natural fibres, bridging the gap between synthetic foams and other natural fibre insulation materials. It has a thermal conductivity of 0.035 W/mK and the ability to eliminate thermal bridging factors which can improve insulation performance by as much as 30% compared to other natural insulation.

We are pleased to introduce a coloured range of the ever popular Celenit wood-wool boards. The panels, painted with potassium silicate biological colours, are certified by naturalplus® for false ceilings and partitions. Available in 11 colours to suit a range of interior design options. They create a comfortable working environment by regulating noise levels, preventing the transmission of sound and insulating from cold, heat and fire. It is easy to work with and install, allowing you to save time and money.

Always on the look-out for innovative new products - we now supply the Homatherm range of fibre insulation to give our customers a wider choice to suit different applications and budgets. As well as the wide range of boards on offer, the range also includes the flexCL®, a top performing cellulose insulation batt and holzflex® Mais, the world’s first completely natural woodfibre insulation bound with a maize based binder providing durable performance for the highest demands.

Foundation Degree in Sustainable Development in Construction T y-Mawr ˆ and Coleg Powys have joined forces after a successful bid into a collaborative project with the University of Wales to develop and deliver an exciting new degree programme bringing sustainability together with construction. The foundation degree in ‘Sustainable Development in Construction’ gives individuals the opportunity to understand the implications of sustainability, sustainable materials and technologies and explore solutions already achieved in the built environment through case studies. There are many sustainability degrees that focus on the engineering and theory behind the materials and technologies but few that attempt to help students develop solutions through the understanding, selection, implementation and management of them. With emphasis on the use of sustainable materials in the built environment this foundation degree develops skills and the appreciation of the changes required to achieve sustainability. The course aims to instil in students a sense of enthusiasm and passion for sustainability and sustainable development in construction.
