The FVC Residents’ Council operates with a number of Working Committees which meet regularly to facilitate resident involvement in various functional areas around the Village. This month we are pleased to feature the Audit and Finance Committee. The goal of this Committee is to review and help preserve the current and long term financial integrity of Friendship Village Chesterfield (FVC). The Committee meets regularly to discuss the Operating and Balance Sheet Reports issued each month by the Accounting Director. It also reviews other reports and items of interest that may materially impact net assets. The documents include, but are not limited to, any statements or studies issued by the Accounting Director, the Friendship Fund Director, the Executive Director, the Health Center Administrator and the Independent Auditor. It is an active participant in the preparation and review of the Annual FVC Budget. A representative from the Committee also is designated to serve as an advisor to the FVC Board of Director’s Finance Committee as well as the Friendship Fund Committee. The Committee acts as a financial and operating sounding board and makes reports and recommendations to the Residents’ Council, Staff and all residents as appropriate. Interested residents are welcome to visit the Committee meetings by contacting Leroy Amen, the Audit and Finance Committee Chairman.

Gift Giving The holiday season is busy. With shopping, family affairs, the change of seasons, it is easy for even the most seasoned Holiday reveler to become run down. So make sure this season you take good care of yourself by eating a balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables, drinking enough water, getting ample sleep, being active, enjoying the present moment, and resting. Taking care of ourselves gives us and our families a gift that keeps on giving.

Molten Chocolate Cups (serves 6) 2 oz chopped bittersweet chocolate 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 teaspoons espresso powder 1/2 cup of granulated sugar 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 5 eggs Instructions: 1. Melt all chopped bittersweet chocolate, unsalted butter, and espresso powder in a medium saucepan, stirring over medium heat. 2. Take pan off heat and whisk in sugar, vanilla, 3 large eggs, and 2 egg whites one at a time. 3. Sift ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder over top. Whisk to combine. 4. Divide among 6 (4oz) ramekins. 5. Bake in 350oF oven until puffed, top cracks, and edges are set but center is gooey (~15 mins). 6. Cool 1 to 2 minutes. Dust with confectioner’s sugar. Serve immediately, 04

Folks are wondering... If you are one of the people who has been wondering who drew the beautiful and festive drawings in the gallery across from the Creative Arts Studio, here’s the answer:
FVC Artist and Resident, Frank Stanton. After receiving his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Washington University in 1955, Frank's first art job was with New Center Studios in Detroit where a lot of advertising and illustration was done for the automobile industry.
When a slow period came, Frank returned to St. Louis, intending to go back to Detroit when business picked up, but took a job in St. Louis with the Illustrators Studio and worked there for 4 1/2 years, never going back to New Center Studio in Detroit. After establishing a number of clients at the Illustrators Studio, he went into business for himself. He had a studio in St. Louis and while working there he met his future wife, Betty, who was an artist working for another studio in that building. After marriage, they continued to have a free lance business in their home studio. In 1966, Frank was hired as Full Professor in the newly formed Art Department at Florissant Valley Community College, to teach a variety of Graphic Design courses. He continued to do this for 32 years, as well as continuing to do his freelance work in the evenings and on weekends. The family decided to use Frank’s artwork for their Christmas cards in 1971. With Frank grading final projects of the students and getting grades turned in for the semester, it was always a very busy time each year. While Frank was teaching at Florissant Valley CC, he enrolled in an independent study Masters Program at Syracuse University, attending for 3 summers and spring breaks and achieved his MFA. He worked under well-known active American illustrators and found the course extremely interesting and beneficial. Also included was a two week trip to London and Paris to view studios and talk with artists abroad. The Stantons displayed original artwork of Frank's, Betty's, and their two girls, who are also professional artists, in a Stanton Family Retrospective at Florissant Valley CC in 1997. Many friends and relatives have collected and enjoyed the cards throughout the years. The Stantons are happy to share them with everyone at Friendship Village Chesterfield. 07

Chesterfield Village Senior Food Drive Thanks to the Villagers’ generous support, the FVC Senior Food Drive has made a significant donation. Our gifts have made an impact in the lives of seniors throughout St. Louis. An excerpt from a letter from Judy Coyman, Food Drive Coordinator from Operation Food Search, says it all: Dear Helen, Thank you for Friendship Village Chesterfield’s donation of 456 pounds of food and personal care items and $276 in checks and cash. These donations are valued at $1,046.64 and will provide enough food for 281 people for a day. On the day it arrived the donations went immediately to a South St. Louis Senior Center and to say the least, they were thrilled with your efforts. Beyond the donation, they were especially touched by your concern and the community spirit shown by all of you at Friendship Village Chesterfield. The monetary donations have been earmarked for our acquisition of senior care items (liquid protein supplements and incontinence products which are in extremely high demand)...

by FVC Chaplain, Jake Bennett “Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises!” Psalm 98:4 It is hard to believe that we have already reached December! While our year has gone by quickly I hope that you have enjoyed this brief survey of the history of hymnody. Throughout the year we have seen how God has used great sorrow, suffering and even conflict to produce some amazing, hopeful hymns of praise. While there are many more hymn authors that we could spend great length studying there is one that we absolutely should not miss; English hymn writer Isaac Watts. During the course of his life Watts wrote over 750 hymns and is considered the “Father of English hymnody”. He was born in 1674 to a Nonconformist home in Southampton, England. A Nonconformist home was a family that refused to conform to the official state religion of the Church of England for theological reasons. Watts’ father was so passionate about his faith that he was imprisoned twice. This strong conviction undoubtedly affected Watts’ own faith in the Lord and was likely instrumental in his study of theology later in life. From a young age Watts displayed a keen wit and strong affinity for rhymes. As a child he apparently annoyed his parents with his constant rhyming and replied to one of his father’s threats with: “O father, father, pity take, And I will no more verses make.” It makes you wonder how his father responded to that!
As a young man Watts was theologically trained and was ordained as a pastor. His work eventually gave him the opportunity to train pastors for ministry. Around this time he fell in love with the Psalms. Watts believed that the Psalms were beautiful in the original Hebrew but felt that they should be sung in modern English translations. This is where much of the inspiration came for writing his hymns. Watts sought to reflect a clear picture of the theological truth behind the Psalms, updating them with theology from the New Testament and placing them within the forms and structure of English poetry. The amazing results were hymns of rich theological truth and beautiful, profound statements. While there are many good examples of this (“When I Survey the Wondrous Cross”, “Alas! And Did My Savior Bleed”, “From All That Dwell Below the Skies” “Jesus Shall Reign”, “Our God, Our Help in Ages Past”) there is one hymn that stands out in this particular season: “Joy to the World”. “Joy to the World” was based upon Psalm 98. In it we are encouraged to invite all creation to the worship and praise of the living God. While it is not contextually a Christmas hymn, we tend to assign it in the Advent season because the opening verse celebrates the arrival of Jesus, the Messianic King. Yet this hymn stretches beyond the themes of Christmas to encourage us to proclaim and rest in the Mission of God which is the primary reason why Jesus came into the world: to
save and forgive us from our sins and reversing the destruction of death. In “Joy to the World” Watts declares the biblical truth that Jesus comes to make His blessings flow – far as the curse is found. Where is the curse found, we may wonder? The curse is found in every single human heart and life. Jesus comes into the world to redeem us from our sins and save us from complete separation from God – the ultimate form of death. This is ultimately what we celebrate at Christmas; the fulfillment of God’s promise to bring us a Savior. His birth marks the beginning of the end as His atoning sacrifice and resurrection would be the means of saving us from our sins as He dies the death we deserved to die. That is the true Joy in the World. May God bless you and your families this Season with His love and true joy.

They have two daughters, Rebecca (Don) Klingler and Helen (Rich) Petrofsky and five grandchildren. All members of the Stuber family live in the St. Louis area with the exception of one grand-daughter in Dallas and another in Los Angeles. “We’re big tent campers,” they said. “We especially liked rafting the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon (280 miles) and camping in Rocky Mountain National Park.” They’ve made two trips to Alaska, where they went back-packing. Martha enjoys gardening. Once, Creve Coeur was searching for the “Best Garden.” Though she did not want to enter the competition, a friend entered Martha’s garden on her behalf.
