Why relax? Many of us have heard and read about relaxation, yet some of us are still confused as to what relaxation is, it’s benefits, and how to do it. Relaxation is not a cure-all, but it can be effective in improving your overall well- being. The goal of relaxation is to turn off the outside world so the mind and body are at rest. We use the mind to help the body achieve a relaxed state. With consistent practice you may experience less stress and anxiety, better sleep at night, more energy and improvement in any chronic health problems you may have. If you are interested in exploring the benefits of relaxation, try The Relaxation Class added to the schedule this fall.

Want to relax? Diaphragmatic breathing is a simple and easy method of breathing which can be practiced any time and almost anywhere. It can be done sitting, laying down, standing or even while walking:
*Relax your shoulders, arms, hands and chest. *Put one hand on your abdomen and the other on your chest. *Breathe in through your nose, filling the area around your waist with air. (Your chest hand should remain still and the hand on your abdomen should move) *Breathe out your mouth without force or effort.
To sign up please stop by the Health at Home office in Apt 357, Monday-Friday between the hours of 8 am - 4 pm.

The Village Senior Food Drive will begin around the first of October and will give residents an opportunity to help feed the hungry living in the St. Louis region. As it is not practical to establish a food pantry on campus we shall be working with a large local food collection and distribution organization, Operation Food Search. Operation Food Search distributes food to food pantries, provides special programs for children and babies, conducts cooking classes in low income areas of the city, and much more. The agency will provide collection boxes to collect food and requested toiletries right here at FVC (outside of the library) and will distribute to seniors in need and many other great causes. The need for food for seniors has sharply increased as our economy has worsened and there are some food pantries which serve seniors only. Lists of most wanted food and items for seniors are posted on bulletin boards around the Village.
If one prefers to contribute money instead, there are two options for giving. Please make checks payable to “Operation Food Search”. If you would like a receipt for tax purposes, please place your check in an envelope marked “OFS” and turn it in at the Front Desk. Vicki Cox, FVC Office Manager, will see that checks are secured until pick up. If you do not wish for a receipt, please give checks directly to Jake Bennett, FVC Chaplain. Do not put checks in food collection box. For more information, please contact Helen Nierman (Apt. 295), Jake Bennett (ext. 156) or go to the OFS website: www. Operationfoodsearch.org

Articles written by FVC resident, Esther Phillips Virginia “Ginny” Clark came to FVC on the 22nd of February at the suggestion of her daughter, Jane, and her son-inlaw, Bill. Ginny’s grandson, Jay, lives near Wentzville with his wife, Lisa. They have given Ginny seven grandchildren and one greatgrandson, whom Ginny enjoys so much.
Dave and Dee Felt joined us at FVC on March 15th of this year. They live in Apartment 227.
Dave was born in Kansas City and moved to St. Louis when he was six years old. He grew up in University City, went to Hawthorn Grade School, University City High School and got his Engineering degree at Washington University. “I was drafted,” Dave said Ginny was born in the country, near and worked in the U.S. Army Medical Research Laboratory. Julia Merrill joined FVC on February 13th, 2013 and makes her home in Apartment 465. A native St. Louisan, Julia lived in University City where they had a sleeping porch. She went to Mullanphy Grade School on Shaw Boulevard and as she states, “one of St. Louis’s best high schools:” University City High School. Julia was very involved in her school work and community. High school friends called her Winnie and she edited the school yearbook. She graduated at 16 and went on to earn a degree in mathematics from Washington University in St. Louis. Julia met her husband, Frank James, “Jim”, who was playing third trumpet with the Glen Miller band. He was working at the door for his concert band when the two met and she was invited to a rehearsal. His desire was “to be a great musician.” He went to Vanderbilt University and then to Yale. Jim passed in 1989. They have one daughter who makes her home in Nevada. The Stantons, who are also residents here, acquainted Julia with FVC. Now Julia’s brother and sister-in-law are moving into FVC’s new expansion! It is our pleasure to welcome Julia to FVC!
