What is Wellness? Wellness is generally used to mean a healthy balance of mind, body and spirit that results in an overall feeling of well-being. The National Wellness Institute describes wellness as an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a more successful existence. The Friendship Village Wellness Challenge seeks to promote wellness for residents and staff through fun and friendly competition. Residents and staff are teamed together to earn points in five wellness categories. The first category is “Physical Well-Being” defined as taking pro-active measures through regular healthcare screenings and safe lifestyle practices to maintain or improve health. “Exercise” is defined as any activity that works your muscles or heart. “Nutrition” is defined as taking steps to improve your nutritional intake. “Mind/Spirit” is defined as participating in activities that nourish the mind and spirit. “Volunteer/Kindness” is defined as making meaningful gestures to better the lives of others. The competition runs for 10 weeks and at the end, prizes are awarded. Prizes are great but the real reward is a greater feeling of well-being that we hope you achieve. At FVC we are committed to developing overall wellness as a community. The next Wellness Challenge begins on Monday, September 16th. Register by Wednesday, September 11th. Call me at extension 8756 to find out more details.

by FVC Chaplain, Jake Bennett Where do we go when we are in complete desperation? In Isaiah 9:2, the Lord says, “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.” Many of us have experienced deep darkness in our souls. The darkness that immobilizes us from moving but also creates in us real feelings of hopelessness. Desperation and hopelessness are devastating forces that leave us helpless and alone. Yet God brings light into the darkest of places. This is the case for William Cowper. William Cowper had a hard life. He was born in 1731 in Berkhamsted, England. His father was the rector of the Church of St. Peter, a very historic church, and chaplain to King George II. He was a busy man with little interest in his children. William’s mother died when he was six years old and her death would severely impact him for years to come. A few years later William would fall in love with a woman but was denied her hand in marriage because he was not wealthy enough for her. After these sad events Cowper finished law school and prepared to take the bar exam. Upon his final oral examination William had a complete mental breakdown. He became so severely depressed that he would attempt to take his own life three times. After his final, unsuccessful attempt, he was committed to an asylum. The hopelessness of Cowper’s condition could not get any worse. He lost his mother, was rejected from the love of his life
and failed at his occupation. Where does one go when they are in complete desperation? For eighteen months Cowper was completely isolated and alone, yet God was going to speak powerfully into his life. While reading the Scriptures in his room William came across Romans 3:23-25 which says, “23 For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.” For the first time in his life Cowper began to understand the love of God. When William was released from the asylum his life was completely changed. He met and became close friends with John Newton, author of A mazing Grace. Newton encouraged Cowper to understand God’s light in the midst of his darkness. Cowper’s life was transformed. He spent time visiting the sick and caring for the poor. One of Newton’s journal entries said, “He [Cowper] loved the poor. He often visited them… sympathized with them, counseled and comforted them in their distresses and those who were seriously disposed were often cheered and animated by his prayers!” There were times when Cowper felt his depression
returning. In these moments, he and Newton would write hymns of praise. One of these hymns was “There is a Fountain Filled With Blood”. Cowper wrote, “There is a fountain filled with blood drawn from Emmanuel’s veins; And sinners plunged beneath that flood lose all their guilty stains. Dear dying Lamb, Thy precious blood shall never lose its power; Till all the ransomed church of God be saved, to sin no more. E’er since, by faith, I saw the stream Thy flowing wounds supply, Redeeming love has been my theme, and shall be till I die.” The Lord turned William’s life around completely. Even though he never married and never returned to his previous profession he had a joyful hope for the rest of his life. The Light of the World illuminated the very darkest of places with His real, sustaining hope. Like Cowper, God radically transforms our lives as we trust in that hope and as we rest in His love.
