Employee Appreciation Resident Reminder Beginning Friday, November 1st, 2013, we will begin our Annual Employees’ Christmas Fund Drive! We hope everyone will participate since this is the only way we can thank and show our appreciation to our numerous employees for their many services to us throughout the year. Most of us can relate to our past Christmases and what it meant to provide that extra happiness to our loved ones. Look for an upcoming letter in your FVC mailbox for more information. Let’s give our employees a Bright and Merry Christmas! -Employee Christmas Fund Committee

An Attitude of Gratitude Thanksgiving is upon us. It is a time of turkey, pumpkin pie, cranberry sauce, and gratitude. Did you know gratitude is a big part of overall wellness? Gratefulness is not only good for the soul, but for the body as well. Endorphins, a neurotransmitter associated with happiness, are released into our brain when we experience feelings of gratefulness. Endorphins are also responsible for a better immune system, an increased tolerance to pain, relief of stress and tension, lowering blood pressure, depression relief and much more. Being grateful is a practice that is easy. Every day we can find things to be thankful for: abundance of food, shelter, clothing, internet access‌the list is endless. Just by focusing on the things we are grateful for and acknowledging what they are is all it takes. The little things can make big differences in our state of well-being.

by FVC Chaplain, Jake Bennett As we have surveyed many different hymns over the past year and you may have noticed that most of these songs came out of great hardships or tragedies. Whether it was blindness, grief or disability, each hymn writer learned to find great hope in the Lord to face their conditions. This month we are going to examine a background of a hymn which was not born out of disaster but instead conflict. Many of us today may see conflict in our lives – either between our friends, family members, roommates, or neighbors. We may wonder in the face of these tensions if there is any redeemable hope. To answer this question we turn to a very famous hymn, Rock of A ges. The words of this hymn have brought great comfort to many but few know how the hymn came about. Rock of Ages was written by a minister named Augustus Toplady. Augustus was born in 1740. He lost his father the following year and his only brother died a few months later. This left him all alone with his mother, Catherine, a very religious woman. Even though he grew up in a religious home, Augustus never truly understood the grace of God. His journals from this time period reflect a very fearful child who was nervous of God’s wrath towards his sins. His anxieties were heightened as a teenager when his mother’s health significantly declined. Her repeated
cycle of health and sickness left poor Augustus in constant fear of losing her. In 1755 Toplady enrolled in Trinity College. One day he was visiting a worship service in a barn led by Irish peasants. It was in this lowly place that Augustus realized the grace and peace of God. Despite his penitent attitude growing up, in this barn filled with immigrant peasants Augustus began to see that he could not save himself. Instead it was the love of God in Jesus that brought complete forgiveness. From this point forward his life was radically changed. He became so convicted of God’s sovereign grace that he was no longer afraid. At the age of 25 Toplady was ordained in the Church of England and began a career of writing. It was in the 1760’s that Augustus began interacting with another minister in the Church of England; John Wesley. Toplady and Wesley created quite a controversy between themselves, writing pamphlets debating issues including, predestination, free will and how much control God had in salvation. Their disagreements would lead Toplady to compose the hymn Rock of Ages. Two verses stood out; making his most stark critics agree to the beautiful hope and promises of God found within it. “Not the labor of my hands, Can fulfill Thy law’s demands; Could my zeal no
respite know, Could my tears forever flow, All for sin could not atone; Thou must save, and Thou alone. Nothing in my hand I bring, Simply to the cross I cling; Naked, come to Thee for dress; Helpless look to Thee for grace; Foul, I to the fountain fly; Wash me, Savior, or I die.” These words have brought great comfort to countless people. They demonstrate that God’s truth stands out even in the face of conflict and controversy. Wesley and Toplady may have never reconciled all their theological differences but today they both stand in the presence of the Rock of Ages. This beautiful hymn continues to live on because of a hope in the Lord. Even when we hurt other people we are reminded that there is truly nothing good that we bring to God with our hands. Yet in Jesus we are loved, forgiven and redeemed in our weaknesses because of His great character, presence and strength.

Born in Shanghai, China, Bob was a “navy brat.” His father served in the U.S. Navy. The Connor family made their home in San Diego, California where Bob started grade school and then moved to Pearl Harbor in Hawaii for three years. Retiring from the U.S.
Navy after 36 years and two World Wars, his father wanted to be as far away from the ocean as he could and moved the family to Rutledge, Missouri. Completing Grade School in Rutledge, Bob went to Memphis, Missouri for High School. Upon graduating from High School he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving in Okinawa, Puerto Rico, England and Spain. After discharge from the Air Force, Bob continued traveling overseas to Turkey, Kuwait, Darfur and Libya for an oil exploration company. Upon returning to the United States Bob enrolled in Northeast State Teachers College (now Truman State) in Kirksville, MO where he met and married Audrey Jean Heithaus from St. Louis. Moving to St. Louis, Bob was employed by McDonnell-Douglas while completing his college education at the University of Missouri in St. Louis with an Economics degree and a number of post graduate studies in Accounting. We are happy you are here, Bob!
Margaret “Peg” Burke moved into Apartment 240 on May 15th from her own home “near here.” Her California son did not want her living alone and she said she always knew
about Friendship Village Chesterfield.
Peg was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and attended grade school there. At the age of 15, she and her parents moved to Philadelphia. She again moved back to Ohio where she graduated from high school in Portsmouth. “I went back to Cincinnati for my first job where I worked in an office, then I moved back to Portsmouth,” she tells me. And that’s where she met Donald Burke. They were married on June 25, 1960 in Portsmouth and then moved to Akron, Ohio. Don was an electrical engineer for General Electric. The Burkes had a son, then a daughter and then two more sons. They made their home near Baxter and Wild Horse Creek roads. Don passed April 16, 2006. In their lifetime the Burkes did a good deal of traveling all over the United States and Europe. They went on a number of group tours. Hobbies? Peg enjoys stitching and bridge. May Peg spend many hours of fun (playing bridge included) with her friends here at FVC!
