Use It or Lose It

Carla DeGrande

You have probably heard of the phrase “use it or you lose it” regarding health and fitness. It basically states that if you don’t get enough physical activity, your heart, bones and muscles will get weaker. This principle also applies to balance. If you don’t regularly put your body in situations where it needs balance, your sense of balance will get worse. You are telling your brain and body that balance is not important. Your body will adapt to this change. The good news is that there are many ways you can “use it” and reverse the process of “losing” physical fitness, strength and balance. Try out one of our many wellness classes offered throughout the week!

Carla DeGrande

Folks are wondering... Many residents have noticed the new collection of paintings in the FVC Gallery (across from the Creative Arts Studio). These paintings are the work of local artist, Pattie Garrett. Her works are on display through the month of February. Her current exhibition is entitled: “Oil Paintings of the Rural Midwest. Pattie Garrett, a self-taught artist, developed her skills by studying the techniques of the Old Masters. Over the years, she has painted with water colors and acrylics before discovering the joy of oil painting. Pattie employs the wet-on-wet application of oils on canvas in her paintings, which lends itself to beautiful shadings and lighting techniques. For the past 3 years, she has studied with instructor Bill Bayer, well known for his seminars across the United States. Pattie grew up on a farm in Northwestern Missouri. There she developed a great love for the outdoors and nature. As a child, she marveled at the play of light through the trees, lying on the ground looking at the sky, the moonlight on the snow and water, the shadows on the hillsides....all things that influenced her paintings of today. She has been told that her paintings are reminiscent of those done by Thomas Kincaid. Pattie Garrett specializes in landscapes, portraits of both people and animals and commissioned art. After teaching pre-K in the Ladue area for 23 years, Pattie is now retired. She and her husband, Steve, live in Chesterfield. They are blessed to have 4 sons and their families, which include 9 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild, also living in the area. Pattie Garrett is a juried artist in residence at the MindWorks Gallery in Chesterfield. 10% of all proceeds are donated to Alzheimer's Foundation in honor of her parents. She has also participated in juried events at the Old Orchard Gallery in Webster Groves. Pattie’s artwork and prints are available for purchase in the Creative Arts Studio. Contact Beth Krusa, Creative Arts Coordinator, if interested. 07

by FVC Chaplain, Jake Bennett “What did the boy rabbit say to the girl rabbit on Valentine’s Day?” “Some bunny loves you!” This month of February we celebrate the star struck holiday of Valentine’s Day. Every year Americans spend over $13 billion dollars to remember this day with their loved ones. After Christmas, Valentine’s Day is the day when the most cards are sent (Hallmark recorded over 144 million cards were distributed in 2013). This very special holiday is often remembered for the candy hearts or the funny cards or the beautiful roses but that this is greatly different from the original purpose of the day. As we continue to study through famous church leaders I invite you to inspect in closer detail a wellknown celebration of the origin of Valentine’s Day. The origins of Valentine’s Day stretch back over 1500 years ago to the 3rd Century with a Roman priest named Valentinus. While there is little historical documentation about Valentinus until the 4th and 5th centuries we can determine that he was a Christian martyr who was condemned for his faith and executed on February 14th. Early church records tell the story of St. Valentinus who lived at a time of great persecution for Christians. Beginning in 64AD through 325AD Christians were frequently executed in brutal and humiliating ways by the Roman authorities. Valentinus was arrested and imprisoned during the reign of Emperor Claudius II. His crime was in marrying Christian couples. At the time this was extremely illegal and Christian

leaders were frequently persecuted for helping these young lovers. There is a story of St. Valentinus during his time in prison when a judge put the priest’s faith in Jesus to the test. This judge had a blind daughter and Valentinus was asked to prove the power of Jesus by restoring sight to the young girl. As the priest laid his hands on the girl’s eyes and prayed, her sight was restored. The judge responded to this miracle by asking Valentinus what he should do for his daughter’s savior. Giving credit to Jesus, Valentinus responded that the judge should break all the idols in his house, fast for three days and be baptized into Jesus’ name.

Towards the end of Valentinus’ life he was arrested again for his faith but was sent to be seen by the Roman Emperor. While Emperor Claudius enjoyed the company of Valentinus, he did not want to accept Jesus. Instead he urged Valentinus to renounce his faith. When Valentinus refused he was beaten and ultimately beheaded. Throughout that time the Church has recognized February 14th as a special day commemorating Valentinus’ faith and desire to bring couples together in marriage. In the late 18th Century British publishers began writing poems for young men to distribute to their love interests to help them find their spouses. They ran these cards commemorating St. Valentinus. Since that time we have developed the holiday as a day of love. What a worthy way to remember a man

who was committed to love – love for others through the love of God. As you celebrate Valentine’s Day this year, remember Valentinus and the value that he placed on the love of God. Emotive love may fade or burn away but God promises that His love will never leave or forsake us. Nothing can pry us away from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus. That love was the most powerful force in Saint Valentinus’ life. May it be the most powerful force in ours as well!

“38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” -- Romans 8:38-39.
