Boarding at St George’s

Boarding is a fundamental and special part of life at St George’s and has many benefits for your daughter. She will have more time to concentrate on her work without the added time and pressure of a daily commute; she will experience the full extent of the provision on offer in the school community; she will become more independent, resilient and self sufficient; and most importantly, she will learn to live with, get on with and respect other people and make great friends.

The boarding houses at St George’s are lively and welcoming. Each boarder is under the care of a Housemistress and a team of resident staff who live in the boarding house with the girls, take responsibility for their wellbeing and who create an environment that promotes a good work ethic and is caring, happy, fun and supportive.

Our location in Ascot means that our boarders are educated in a safe environment but are well connected and can easily go home or further afield for weekends and holidays.

Markham

Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 Boarders

Markham House houses our Year 7 to Year 10 boarders. The Year 7 and Year 8 boarders live on one floor of the original Victorian house with their own common room and kitchen. The Year 9 and 10 boarders live on a different floor of the same building with their own common room and kitchen.

The girls take part in many evening activities such as fitness in the gym and swimming, arts and crafts, cookery, games and movie nights. Weekends involve an array of exciting activities including educational visits, artistic workshops, theatre and cinema trips, shopping and sightseeing. For those not wishing to take part, there is always the opportunity to relax in their common room or their dormitory. We understand that the school week is incredibly busy and you will often find all of Markham relaxing in their common rooms in their pyjamas at the end of the day with hot chocolate and toast!

The emphasis in Markham is on integration and enjoyment. All our boarders are encouraged to be a part of the House community, coming together for weekly House Meetings and joining up for evening and weekend activities. Our girls all know each other and look out for one another just as if they were a family.

Knatchbull

Year 11 and Lower Sixth Boarders

Knatchbull is home to the Year 11 and Lower Sixth boarders. There is a strong emphasis on study in the house as our boarders work towards their GCSE and Lower Sixth school examinations at the end of the year. Knatchbull is near to the school Library, and most evenings groups of girls are to be found in the Library helping each other in their studies.

A good work/life balance is also encouraged, with plenty of fun to be had. With weekly outings to the cinema as well as shopping, theatre visits and physical and sporting activities, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

In the House, boarders are encouraged to be independent. Each common room has a kitchen where girls are allowed to cook. They are also able to wash their own laundry and are expected to keep the common rooms tidy on a rota system.

Knatchbull has a wonderful community atmosphere and with staff operating an open door policy, our boarders can rest assured there is always someone to talk to.

Loveday Upper Sixth Boarders

Loveday houses our Upper Sixth boarders. Living in a separate, year-specific house gives our Upper Sixth the space to prepare for independent living as they organise everyday chores such as cooking, doing their own laundry and booking travel arrangements as they wish.

The Housemistress of Loveday encourages this sense of independence by allowing the girls to organise their own outings at weekends should they wish to do so. She and the Head of Sixth Form are available to help support our Upper Sixth boarders as they prepare for their A Level examinations, as they undertake leadership roles within the School and as they take responsibility for organising House events.

Loveday provides a relaxing, home-from-home environment so our Upper Sixth boarders are able to enjoy their last year at St George’s to the very full.
